Note that the example tags for rants includes Xcode... There is a reason.
In 1984 Apple introduced Macintosh and we got a computer that could barely handle multiple windows on the screen. But by 1986 multiple windows all over the place.
In 1985 Microsoft introduced Window 1.0 Yes boys and girls, no "s" because it hand only one Window. 7 years later in 1992 Microsoft got their head out of their ass and produced "MDI" or Multiple Document Interface and woohoo, had multiple windows on the screen... big boy pants 8 years after Mac.
Today we have Xcode from Apple. The old Window 1.0 engineers are apparently alive and well as Xcode is a One Window Trick Pony and if you fight with it, it starts randomly jamming your separate Windows into tabs into one window, completely fucking up your spatial organization of your working source code.
It is like the bastards going into a blind man's house and re-arranging his furniture for fun.

All the time while I'm programming I hate Java.... Don't hate me now :D I'm learning Java in high school. I very love very fast programming languages such as C and C++, so this is why I don't like Java, but there are some reasons why I like Java. I just started learning how to create own window. What the hack is this? This is so simple. I tried to create window in C/C++ with OpenGL, just blank window with color. Complicated..... But with java it's fairy tale.
You can add me now to Java familly, but remember I also love C++.
So here your are, Hello World Java FX app :D
Final goal:
Create window application similar scratch.16 -

Agh, holy shit. devRant, I need some love.
I have successfully double-buffered the Windows console (cmd.exe) but all hell breaks loose when you resize the fucking window. The currently active buffer will receive the change in dimensions while the inactive buffer will not, resulting in the window quickly oscillating between the two sizes as the buffers change size.
That got me stuck for about a day. Today, I got it sort of working but it wasn't satisfying at all. I can get it to resize LARGER, but if you resize the window SMALLER, the actual buffer inside the window doesn't change size, so scrollbars appear and I have NO IDEA HOW TO FIX THAT. I somehow need to calculate, or use the API to find, the perfect dimensions (In rows and columns) for the console buffer INSIDE the window buffer for them to not have scrollbars.
And I just - -
I cannot gather the energy to do so right now.
I spent hours finding the solution to this bullshit and ONLY SOLVED HALF MY PROBLEM.
And stack overflow isn't exactly helpful. My problem is so specific that nobody even writes comments on the question.
I guess I need to calculate the amount of characters the screen can hold given the font size and the window size, but fuck, that's a lot of work to do just for something that probably won't even work anyways.
Well, off to the code editor again. Time to inevitably waste my time doing something that won't work.
Yay, programming.27 -

Proof that there is no drug testing at Apple:
- Xcode 10 moved code snippets in a transient spotlight-style window.
The only way you can show snippets is if you have your editor window in "browser mode" vs "document mode" and then the dumbass button with { } on it shows.
If you go into the help menu in the menubar where you can search the other menus, typing in "Snippet" shows only "Create Code Snippet" under "Editor" menu.
So to make it painfully clear, they hide the snippets under a button on a window in a particular window mode. Then, because they have now fucked up the use of Snippets, the "Create" capability becomes a "how do we do that?". This did not make them reconsider their approach... oh nooo... instead they sloppily stuff it in the regular menus all by itself... and do not put a Show Snippets near it. And conversely they don't put a "+" or "-" button in the snippets window.
So here is what happened... someone said "having the snippets in the code editor window is a pain" and someone half-listening heard "windowpane" and pulled out their stash of LSD... everyone took a hit ... and now we have a fucked up hidden button and an orphaned menu command.
I'm going to have to change my username to "XcodeDevTeamAreMorons"3 -

Story time.
I worked on a project recently where the HTML was written just _perfectly_. Div elements were exactly indented as the blocks on the browser window.
CSS classes were self explanatory and altering them didn't introduce any new kind of bug on the browser window.
Introducing a new div block with CSS classes fit perfectly in the window along with responsiveness on different screens.
JS was also written in a self explanatory way.
It was such an Italian Chef's kiss grade of work that I just sat back and admired the glorious work for 10 mins. Totally deserved it.8 -
Saw a fellow developer at my company was having a rough day last week. Hes only been a developer with the company for about 3 months and came in green as grass. I asked him what was wrong and he said he cant get access to the file he needs because his ssh program (winSCP) is "broken" I look over at his computer and see his window was stranded between the two external monitor screens where the only clickable area is one small pixel line against the window. He unplugged the monitors and the window was still off the screen. Apparently, he had done this, and stopped attempting to use winscp and tried another program he didnt know and was resigned to leaving the window floating in no man's land instead of googling how to get the window back into the screen.

I remember this happening quite often on Windows machines: occasionally some random popup window appears for a second or two, does whatever it does and disappears; usually it's either a cmd or a ps window.
Just a few moments ago a weird window popped up on my screen, its title bar was saying something about VisualStudio, and after ~2 seconds it disappeared.
The reasons I find this concerning:
- I don't have anything VS-related installed on my current environment
- I've been running Linux for years now

I've gone through so many tiling wm this semester and can't figure out what I like best...

It seems like very version of Ubuntu I use at work has jank. Ubuntu 18.04 would have file managers that just die. After locking/unlocking the screen it would move windows between monitors. One window would seemingly cause other windows to have discoloration and I would see phantom objects text overlaid with what looks like transparency. This was all Gnome. Lots of little quirks that I just got used to.
Now I am running 22.04 and while a lot of jank went away I am getting new jank. Every once in a while if I move a window or bring a window up after hiding the window. The window will oversize across the screen like I zoomed in. Noticing this with Firefox. It goes back to normal size real quick. But it is kind of wild. Jank that stayed is my external monitor I have attached through hdmi takes its sweet time to reactivate after being asleep. This might actually be a weird hardware issue. This is also Gnome.
I just find it wild that this jank is there and we are like: "Oh well. At least it ain't MS Windows jank..."6 -
We had an IT question:
What's a window?
I wonder.... -.-
I mean bruh if you want us to study you gotta make shit harder. -
AAAARGHH!!! It happens every now and then that when I open a window in a Windows application, the window opens outside the display area, on a non-existing display to the right of my primary screen. There is no other way to access the newly opened window than to go to "Screen resolution" and swap screens 1 and 2 such that the secondary screen thinks it is to the right of the primary screen (although physically it stays to the left of the primary screen). And then, once I've got hold of the window, I swap the screens back. It's just so incredibly annoying and a complete waste of time. This is staring to really get on my nerves! >:(8

So I got a new project idea , an app that takes your image and fits it in a mac window like a border .
Basically when I make a new website or app and I want to post screenshots of it , just the plain screenshot of the app looks bland but if I have a nice aesthetic ✨ mac OS window around it with rounder corners and stuff , it would look very cool . I bet everybody here has seen something like this once or twice. Is there an app that does this already ? takes an image from the user and puts a window around it , with the minimize ,maximize and close buttons and let's the user download the final image . Not necessarily a mac window with there could be option for different types of windows . Even VS code repo on Github has a mac window around it lol . So I would like to make an app that makes this whole process easier instead of requiring you to edit images of your app (in case u don't have windows or a mac for screenshot)
What tools (tech stack )would I require to make a web app for this purpose ?5 -

!rant vim
As i've seen a lot of rants about can't close vim type so I searched and found this in book does it work or not .
Try these: What to Type What it does
:q Quit the current window (or editor if you are out of windows) if there are no unsaved changes.
:q! Quit the current window even if there are unsaved changes.
:qa Quit all windows unless there are unsaved changes.
:qa! Quit all windows even if there are unsaved changes.
:wq Save changes and quit the current window.
ZZ Save changes and quit current window
If you can't get out of vim, you should check to be sure the caps lock is OFF, and press the escape button. If it feels good, press it a couple of times. If it beeps, you know that you've escaped enough. Then these exit commands should work. -

Our company going full magento, and i fucking hate that shit... My table is besides the window and I'm gonna use it3

My worst mistake (though it did help catch a bug which was cool) was not checking that my merge was done properly (we were using a terrible CM tool at the time and you had to merge manually). I had checked in some code that would, among other things, scale an image to a custom window space. I had missed one line of the code I had written to properly calculate the image bounds on window resize. As a result, whenever you would scale the window, the image dimensions would change erratically and screw up other behaviors based on image size. It shipped that way.

Fire at work place.
Normal People: Immediately run from the gate.

Fuck you xcode, let me resize my goddamn window to whatever fucking size I want it to be. I'm writing code, I think I can decide for myself how big I want my window to be.1

I decided to rewrite the cross-window comms lib from the ground up. After all it isn't too big (some 500 lines for the first level, 300 for a little abstraction) and the original is more of an artwork than good code. It somehow works but there are as many explanations as to why as viewers and nobody is allowed to touch it because it would probably break.1

I hate it whenever I wanted to leave office and shut down my PC, it shows only 'update & shut down'. Everytime!6

I'm so mixed about i3... On the one hand, it makes me focus a lot better on my work, on the other hand it's extremely ugly, sometimes a bit inconvenient (taking screenshots), and I don't wanna spend the time to make it look nice. Any suggestions? What window managers are you using?9

If you have an old computer, here's what to do:
1. Find a tall building with a window, preferably on the top floor.
2. Throw your computer out of said window.
3. Enjoy your new computer!3 -
Tried figuring out why my console window did only put out text sometimes, tried to figure that out for about three hours. Turns out visual studio redirects console output to their own console window by default if you start it in debug mode.
Lesson learned: The second answer on SO which is not marked as correct might be correct for you. -
I finally reached a point in configuring my desktop where there is only one thing left to fix, the window control buttons.
Even though I don't think they look ugly, they make everything look a bit macOS-esque.
Can anyone recommend some or has an idea for a design?
Edit: more full scale versions of the images are in the comments.5 -
..that time when you close the wrong window, because the computer *still* hasnt learnt what window on what monitor you were looking at, when you hit that shortcut

first of all sorry for my english, its not my first language
hello, i am an aspiring programmer and im honestly just a really big newbie, im learning vb dot net and ran into an issue that i had. So basically i was using the WinActivate function from autoit with FindWindow(using the title of the window) to supply WinActivate the hwnd. Heres my issue: When the window is NOT minimized so selected or behind other windows the WinActivate function works completely fine, but when the window is minimized it doesnt work, i have read on the documentation that neither function cares wether the window is minimized or not so i came to the conclusion that it might have a different title when minimized? The window is the league of legends client by the way. What can i do to solve/debug this issue, perhaps spy++ could help me? how would i use this, i could upload the visual studio project if someone wants to help me out in that way. WinActivate((FindWindow(Nothing, "League of Legends"))) this is what it looks like.12 -
"The window screen is the Earth's boundary", said a flat earther using Google Maps.
By the way, they don't zoom it out that much.1 -
Hey look! I just finished configuring my window manager, better change it to a new one and start configuring it...1

Protip: If you're using a tiling window manager, you can detach the file browser on the left of any Jetbrians IDE.
This way you can switch to it using the shortcuts you're used to from the WM, as well as resize it very easily.
Also this way if you are not using the integrated terminal of the IDE, you can have the file browser span the full height of your screen, while the terminal and the IDE share the hight on the right.
Disclaimer: I don't know if this is common knowledge, I'm sorry if it is, but I was completely shocked that I missed this feature for years.4 -

Being a Mac user (desktop), when I have a browser window open I NEVER have it occupy full width, usually around 2/3rds width of monitor. Now a client sending me screen grabs from PC always have their browser window absolute max width. Is this a normal thing for PC users? just intrigued, am I the odd ball here?7

I’m very disappointed in PowerToys.
Especially the “FancyZones”.
I was hype when they first starting to work on their window manager.
But then....after a lot of feedback from community (which want something like an i3wm, fully keyboard driven) They come up with this??
I feels waste more time to manage window with FancyZones than not using anything at all.
I’ll stick with my custom hack window manager for now....
(Despite the limitation of win32api, it got a fully keyboard driven + auto tiling)

Useless macos and app window selection
cmd + ` changes window in webstorm (clever them)
go to other app like chrome, cmd + ` does sfa
go to mac app settings and make cmd + ` work for all apps,
now go to webstorm and cmd + ` takes you out of webstorm if other apps open
i hate it -
