I was starting a new job and asked if developers had a choice between a PC, Linux or a Mac. I didn't get a response so I sent an e-mail saying I'd prefer a PC/Linux if that was allowed, or a PC/Windows. First day I get a Mac. Boss says something about how you have to have a Mac to develop on; the company doesn't have good Windows laptops with 16GB of ram.
I really do not like macOS. I wouldn't care if it wasn't for the fact that for the past three jobs, I have always been able to use a Linux machine at work (since 2012). So over the weekend I got it dual booting. It was not easy. Apple's hardware is fucking awful. The keyboard, mouse and bluetooth are all connected to the serial bus.
I got it all working though, at least well enough for my job. It feels so good to have a tiling window manager. (I know Mac does have some now, but I really love i3). I made a guide in case another developer finds themselves in my spot:

Got a question for the linuxers.
I'm a linuxer myself (no shit) but I don't really tweak a lot. Whenever I see those awesome arch setups with tiling wm's etc (https://devrant.com/rants/1902395/ for example), I would love to set that up myself but one thing:
Any idea on how I'd be able to run this well with 6 screens? I've got genuinely no clue.21 -
My fucking campus building.
Really. Built a new one in 2017, we started to study there since Oct 2017 til now and lemme tell something: it's shit. My classroom's paint cracked 2 months in. My classroom lacks a projector which is standard for every classroom to have one back in the old campus building. But nooope. No projector for 1.25 years, at least by now compensated by a 50" TV which whoever the fuck installed the thing took the *only* stock HDMI cable. Shitty floor tiling (think r/mildlyinfuriating but worse), shitty toilet that would break down every 2 weeks and "over the top" gymnasium with air ventilation so bad it feels like Hitler's fucking oven every time we got in.2 -
That feeling you get when you realize that switching to a pure tiling window manager is the best thing you've done in your life since switching to boxers.

It was so frustrating setting this one up. Lots of shouting in front of my monitors. But I think now I'm slowly getting somewhere with my first i3 setup.
Now to see if it will actually improve my workflow somehow.

Okay i3wm users, what do you like to use for the bar manager? I'm trying to decide if I just want to customize the default bar or change it to something like lemonbar to patch the powerline look in my terminal. I don't want something that would be too complex to configure but still be powerful to use. (I've had issues with polybar but it may have been a fuckup from the script I tried to run with it.
Screenshot of my setup WIP.

I started using i3 window manager and My productivity Increased to 70%. I'm sure it'll still go up as I get used to it. I feel like I own the device now!😂1
-
Finally decided to give Arch Linux a go on hardware.
I've never had so much fun installing a distro before.
I chose Deepin as the desktop environment, it's fucking beautiful.
(I somehow didn't really take to i3, I prefer a full blown environment like Deepin).
Since it's my first time using Arch and Deepin, do you guys have any advice? How you like to use and maintain Arch? Any tips? Productivity hacks? (Besides a tiling WM)2 -
Decided to use awesomeWM - I prefer it massively to i3, even though I don't use it's optional tiling layout.
Anyway, after a number of hours, I've got it how I like it!

TIL: new M2 MacBooks officially support only single external screen. Not even the Pro class supports dual. It supports single 6K monitor, but I've failed to find any userfriendly ways to get good tiling which would be equivalent to multi-monitor. The only native tilling is left/right split. TB3 can handle 3x2K or 2x4K, but Apple said "fuck you and your multi-monitor setup".
I ain't mad tho. The guy upgrading to M2 sold me his dual monitors for a really good price.9 -
Oh Lord, I forgot how bad windows and the proprietary applications made for it are... 10 years on Linux and it just keeps raising the bar, but I feel like Win is getting worse! Why do companies pay for this bs, if it has zero advantage over any os!? no reason devs need to have the same exact computers as everyone else in the company, it's just so... inefficient, maybe if we had something better, with yknow, less latency, less "not responding" when all I did was click minimize, Linux is free, I think one of the 200,000+ employees can figure it tf out, then maybe they wouldn't have to cut the per diem to $40 a day...
...This is my life without a tiling wm, just sucks 😭4 -
I'm considering switching to a tiling windows manager. The main thing drawing me back is that in my job we work a lot on each others computers (helping, debugging, pair programming...).
Will using a tiling WM make my workspace hard to use for somebody else ? It would be disqualifying7 -
I'm finally gonna try to organize my dotfiles and get my linux work environment somewhat organized
what tiling WM and terminal based editor will I meme myself into oh boy1 -
My board game based on mandavoshka is almost done and if you like to test it via Testflight, please do.
https://testflight.apple.com/join/...
I know, a board game isn’t exactly very exciting but I wanted to do this for ages.
It‘s meant to be played on a tablet with up to four players sitting around the device.
So the controls are rotated to the side of the current player.
You can also select the computer to play for a player, but it doesn’t play very well.
The app icon and the background images are generated by chatgpt because I‘m shit at designing.
It was a real pain in the butt to make chatgpt generate repeatable (tiling) textures.
The app will be free but I added in app purchase to unlock the color picker for each player. It will be the cheapest price of 0.29 €.
I‘m doing it to get experience with iap, not to make money.
You can test the iap for free during the Testflight phase.

I've been trying Hyprland for the past couple of months. So far, it's the best tiling composer I've seen:
https://battlepenguin.com/tech/...3 -
I feel inseparable from the i3 tiling window manager.anyone else with the same situation.also does anybody here use i3-gaps too4
-
I've gone through so many tiling wm this semester and can't figure out what I like best...
i3, bspwm, xmonad, windowchef, herbstuffwm, awesomewm, fvwm, etc.
I love the cleanliness and productivity aspect of them compared to something like Windows and it's floating/snap feature. Awesomewm looks like a good choice but the config scripting is quite verbose.
So many choices! Probably doesn't help I want to keep it consistent across my laptop and 3 monitor setup (1 21:9, 2 16:9).4 -
In the past couple weeks I've switched from openbox to bspwm, and I am in love. The tiling is whatever, but I love the granular control bspwm offers for monitors, desktops, and nodes(windows). I love running extremely customizable apps like sxhkd, polybar, and picom to make it my own. Anybody else around here using bspwm?3

The white fungus… looks like snow, somehow distorts light waves above it, as if it was hot. Didn't dare to touch it. It grows in an abandoned railroad depot we have here. It loves ceramic tiling.3
-
I hope there's a pill that I could take to master vim and tiling desktop in an instant. I feel so envious just by looking at a co-worker who's good with that and rocking a cool tiny 60% keyboard. I'm TOO damn comfortable with the normies way of computing.2

Hey, internet! Does chrome/FF have any plugins enabling any tab to become a monitoring dashboard? I have too many monitoring tools to keep an eye on at the same time... Opening multiple chrome windows and tiling them on the screen is one way, but tile 6 windows and the desktop gets cluttered by taskbars/arrdessbars/other stuff. Doing it all in one tab would save space.
Soo.. anyone knows the right tool for the job? TIA1 -
Do you use i3 (dynamic tiling windows manager) on your *nix system?
What are your favourite tips/hacks for optimisation?7 -
Protip: If you're using a tiling window manager, you can detach the file browser on the left of any Jetbrians IDE.
This way you can switch to it using the shortcuts you're used to from the WM, as well as resize it very easily.
Also this way if you are not using the integrated terminal of the IDE, you can have the file browser span the full height of your screen, while the terminal and the IDE share the hight on the right.
Disclaimer: I don't know if this is common knowledge, I'm sorry if it is, but I was completely shocked that I missed this feature for years.3 -
Alright, I've got a confesstion. It's a confession and a question, combined, get it?
Anyway, I've been a happy Linux user for over 20 years now, and I've used all kinds of graphical envs, from tiling wms like dwm and xmonad (I didn't care for hyprland, sorry if that's weird) to full DEs like kde, cinnamon, gnome, etc.
The "question" here is why do people hate Gnome so much? It's the one environment that I keep coming back to, especially now that my main machine is a beast, and RAM usage is nary a concern. Even then, my system is sipping RAM compared to KDE (running two docker dev environments, three browser windows with several tabs - one of which is streaming music, slack, and steam is sitting on the fourth virtual desktop, chilling), and I'm still at just over 18 GB of ram.Being able to push one single key/key combo, and type anything at all that is vaguely relevant to what you want to accomplish, and having that thing be instantly available (including searching for individual files) is super nice. Easy virtual and multi monitor switching is intuitive; little to no effort needed.
Even when I want to do other stuff, like play a game, or edit a photo, video, or some of my shitty musical-aspirational material - GNU+Linux with Gnome has been and continues to be the easiest, most neato way to get shit done.
Why the hate, gnome haters? Maybe you’re using it wrong?8 -

I’m very disappointed in PowerToys.
Especially the “FancyZones”.
I was hype when they first starting to work on their window manager.
But then....after a lot of feedback from community (which want something like an i3wm, fully keyboard driven) They come up with this??
I feels waste more time to manage window with FancyZones than not using anything at all.
I’ll stick with my custom hack window manager for now....
(Despite the limitation of win32api, it got a fully keyboard driven + auto tiling)
