Not sure what Linux Desktop to use? Use this handy guide:
- GNOME: when you want no tray icons, themes that break every minor GTK release, and extensions for basic features (that are buggy.)
- KDE: pretty go-Segmentation Fault
- DWM/Awesome/i3/etc.: when you feel like the time you spent learning Vim wasn't wasteful enough
- XFCE: when you want one update per decade and poor Systemd support.
- LXQt: the biggest positive is that it doesn't use GTK.
- Cinnamon: when you like GNOME 3 but you want a different menu
- Deepin: when you want a desktop with the build quality of an HP laptop.
Aren't sure whether to use Xorg or Wayland?
- Xorg: if you want to absurdly fuck up your touchscreen, pick this one.
- Wayland: if you want to screw up most of your apps, too bad; this won't work with your proprietary drivers. If only it did.
What distro to use?
- Ubuntu: if you want to break your system with PPAs, check out this one.
- Debian: when you want Ubuntu except with more out of date packages
- Redhat: when you want Debian except with more out of date packages
- ElementaryOS: wait, someone actually made a properly designed Linux UI?
- Arch Linux: the only thing that doesn't make me sick anymore.
- Slackware: "that exists still really?"
- Gentoo: when you hate systemd more than waiting 4 days to compile Firefox on every release.
... I love Linux. I do. But it is very taxing to get things comfortable for me anymore. I feel like the Linux Desktop is in a period of flux and it's painful to be a part of right now.25 -

So it turns out that my dad accidentally took my spare laptop on a work trip. He's about as non-tech as you can get, and that laptop runs...Arch Linux. Yeah.
(call from dad)
M: hi dad
D: what's your desktop password?
M: (confused) {Password}
D: okay.
(cuts the call)
M: *shrug*
(call from dad)
M: hi dad
D: so where is PowerPoint?! where's the Windows button?! I've been at this for half an hour now and I have to edit a presentation for tomorrow!!
M: (realizes what's happened) oh...uh...dad...that's.. Linux...
D: don't you people do anything the way it's supposed to be done?
M: uh...
D: ugh! So you can't edit PPTs on this?
M: (processing...LibreOffice isn't installed on the laptop, and he will have to use the command line to connect to the internet to use Office Online or Google Slides since the Deepin WiFi module keeps fucking up for some reason)
D: well?
M: (internal sigh) No, you can't edit PPTs on that.
D: wow.
(cuts the call)
He either thinks we're all useless or that we have godlike computer skills to be able to edit PPTs on Linux. Oh well.
(He managed to use the hotel's "workstation" to get it done, so all is well. I should tell him to change his password though, hotel computers have rubbish security.)14 -
Finally got around to installing Arch on an actual machine 😀
I went for deepin since i wanted to try something new. I didn't go for any WMs since the whole concept seems complicated to me but i wanna look into it someday.
Anyways, super happy so far. I boot in < 5s from hitting the power button which is super dope ♥️ ♥️. I did have some weirdness with nvidia drivers (as usual on linux lol) but reinstalling it fixed it.40 -
It was a boring day and I was about to ssh into my server and this guy comes up to me, stares at my screen and when I turned back
He asks me "Have you tried deep in ur ass?"
*People around started looking at us*
I was like wtf! Got out from my chair and looked in his face "wtf did you just ask me?"
"Deepin, Deeepin OS! "
"Say that again u dumb fukkk and I will fucking slam ur face into the wall!"
Fucking confuses every time!!7 -
Deepin Linux. I like you a lot. But the fact that I can't install any software right now means I'm going to leave you.

So just today I stumbled upon Deepin OS (Linux Distro based on Debian) and it looks amazing! Arguably even better than Elementary OS :D Has anyone else used this distro/what do you think?29
-
Finally, after 3 tries and lots of experimentation, I have set up the arch system. I am in "deep" love with deepin desktop environment.
P.S. - Still finding a good web browser though firefox sucks so bad right now plus the fonts are super bad.13 -
Just finished installing Deepin OS on my old laptop as an attempt to get familiar with linux (coming from win10). It looks gorgeous, I got at least four orgasms from the installation process alone. And it comes with lots of cool apps preinstalled (Chrome, Spotify, Steam, etc). So far I'm very happy with it.30

Deepin is sexy. Made me horney
Who want a Mac now
Though I did had trouble with my PppoE internet connection, which wasn't working in ubuntu and in Deepin majority of sites were not loading, but I had fixed it (MTU )15 -
Yes Forbes. I definitely believe that Deepin is one best glorious Linux. No way China has anything to do with it :3 👍10
-
Just installed Deepin ditching fedora and now there's no proper driver for my video card.
The UI is sick tho..(too broke to buy mac)17 -
Since apparently lots of you are into Linux, I would like some advice.
I'm wanting to install a distro to use as my main OS, but there is just too much choice.
I'm coming from Windows 10 so I read that KDE is a good choice for a desktop environment and the Plasma version looks pretty good.
Yesterday I've tried Deepin OS but I'm not a huge fan, looks good but not enough content / customization.
So right now I'm hesitating between Manjaro (with KDE) and Elementary OS.
Would you recommend any of these, and why ?
Btw, this is my first rant 😎18 -
love my new baby <3
base set up: antergos/gnome
Additions: i3 gaps/polybar , getting deepin to play with, mpd+ncmpcpp, gonna get cava.
Don't know all of the specs yet,
16 GB ddr3 mem (??rpm)
256gb SSD
1TB HDD
Asus
also worth mentioning that gnome plays well with toutchscreen 😎
this puppy is gonna serve me well8 -
That's my boy rocking i3 with arch assisted by a mini boye(bottom) for reading and note making assisted by a slightly larger boye(left) rocking arch with deepin desktop for serious work and style on the go.2
-
Bye Bye Fedora! ;(
On the plus side this is the most beautiful desktop environment i've seen and i'm glad to have it.11 -
My Deepin DE on Arch... I am working on i3wm with a polybar or a conky... Will post it if and when its done... Running on a busy schedule nowadays9
-
Tried Deepin. Looks interesting. For some reason screenshot app includes its ui into screenshot image.13

Hi, my name is bohr and I'm a recovering distro hopper.
It all started with Ubuntu, out of my frustrations with the unintuitive nature of DOS I gravitated to a Unix environment which Ubuntu naturally solved. But I quickly became annoyed with the laggy nature of it's daily usage. So I switched to Linux mint. Loving the HTML/css/js configuration aspect of cinnamon I thought it was the answer to all my problems. But I became annoyed with apt and it's lack of a few programs I wanted. This got me to look into an arch based distro, because pacman seemed like the answer to my problems. Unfortunately there are way too many arch distros to use. I experimented with antegros' many DE options: gnome, kde, i3, deepin, openbox... Always finding something wrong. I tried manjaro and it's many flavors, still being annoyed with minute aspects of the os. Out of frustration, with the deep configuration settings I was getting into and the need to actually focus on the work being done on the computer I crawled back to Linux mint. But now my friends, I have decided that maybe it's time to just use a more established distro? Maybe gnome isn't actually that bad? Maybe I need to give it another try? And that is why, I promise, this is the last hop for me. Arch Linux, Gnome here I come and I'm ready to commit this time!...
But have you guys seen POP!_OS? Woah, I bet it would solve all of my problems....6 -
Deepin's new appearance is Godawfully ugly.
Plus it has issues now reading password. Plus I can't fucking opt out of their "user experience program" for any fucking reason.
Great! Just fucking great!
Where do I migrate to from here? 😡😠😡39 -
Finally decided to give Arch Linux a go on hardware.
I've never had so much fun installing a distro before.
I chose Deepin as the desktop environment, it's fucking beautiful.
(I somehow didn't really take to i3, I prefer a full blown environment like Deepin).
Since it's my first time using Arch and Deepin, do you guys have any advice? How you like to use and maintain Arch? Any tips? Productivity hacks? (Besides a tiling WM)2 -
just a note to everyone selling web based software, like plugins or themes: check github. someone who bought your stuff might have put it in a public repository, enabling everyone to get your product for free.1

Came to know about deepin OS on devrant yesterday
Tried it just few moment ago. It's the most beautiful OS I had ever seen. But ...
There is hell lot of issues. Except for the top sites like google, facebook linkedin github, no other page or site is opening. Browser just stops by saying "site can't be reached". Also these sites are loading slower than usual.
Even internet is unaccessible from terminal. Apt-get install just stops at "getting headers 0%"
Please help3 -
Ah, the strange world in which a fresh Windows 10 install boots up roughly twice as fast as a fresh Arch-Deepin on the same laptop. Also noticed the same behaviour with Arch-GNOME 3. Guess I have to dive into configs to get the boot time down.1
-
just installed deepin linux, man this shit is sooooo beautiful! it's based on debian in the new version (15.4, formerly it was ubuntu based). It has its own store where you can find sublime, vscode, most of other editors and even IDEs.9
-
Budgie up and running. Tho, I had an issue overload cpu, and stopped previews-creator. Is that even safe?
Anyways, half of my customized deepin shit doesn't work properly anymore. It's a piss off. Wondering if a downgrade would help.
If shit stops breaking for six more months, I might be able to finish uni and go back to workforce properly, where cash-cash-dollar can buy me a new laptop, or a workstation that allows me to duck around with current laptop.
Like, being a student again has been so unnerving. Won't do it ever again. (a PhD doesn't count as study 😜)2 -
Budgie isn't my best match, but I'm not gonna go back to deepin either. It broke my heart and now I'm done so it can choke on my non-existant dick. *inset darth vader joke*
Can someone pleeeeeeeaaaaaase make some DE that looks pleasant (take lessons from kde/deepin/budgie/mac/whatever) and runs on arch? Please please pretty please?14 -
After doubting Deepin OS for 4 days and slangs to Windows, it turns out, ISP is blocking the port 22, which is why I was not able to communicate to my instance through SSH.
One of the major Cellular company and Fastest 4G in the whole country, 'Idea', is blocking the vital port 22. The same company promoted it's Internet service through chain of adv. calling it's Cellular Internet network, "Idea Internet Network (IIN)". Only to make it sound like IIT, IIMs ( elite indian colleges). Check on YouTube, IIN, if available3 -
So today one of my friends started dualbooting Deepin(a linux distro for those of you who don't know), and he's super hyped about it and even learnt some commands and stuff like that and then another one of my friends started customizing his cinnamon desktop environment on Linux Mint and he was super hyped as well, then another one of my friends also seemed pretty hyped about it too and he said that we should try and install it tommorow. All of this makes me super hyped! :-)1

So you got new sdd and you want to try someone new slick distro. So you google slick distro and you find a blog.
You download 4 to 5 iso. Now you want to make a bootable pendrive, but you don't have pendrive. So you use your 1TB HDD. And you accidentally format the whole HDD. Now you install one by one all iso. You don't like single os you revert back to the original OS. And you have wasted your whole day.
List of distro I installed:
1) Deepin OS
2) Solus OS
3) Nitrux
4) Ubuntu 17.10
5) Pop OS (Orignal OS)10 -
I don't hate ubuntu but I really feel that deepin is what ubuntu should have been.
When I was new to the linux world (maybe I am a new still), whenever I used to ask someone about linux Os, they used to tell me to install ubuntu.
But the ui was not that appealing. Deepin is what I should have installed and I would have ditched windows long ago. I know there are many distros, maybe better than deepin but deepin looks and feels good and is easy to use. The deepin store is awesome.
#peace ✌1 -
Any OS recommendations for my old HP Pavilion g6?
Something a bit less known, along the line of elementaryOS (but stable) or Deepin (but not Chinese spyware).22 -
I finally did it. I installed Arch linux + Unity 3D + VSCode + budgie + vertex + sddm-deepin in virtualbox....
What a fucking journey and a half that was.
Now to install on an ssd for real...
My thoughts on the process:
1.) This is not for the faint of heart.
2.) Be preapred to devote some time getting it all right.
3. This was actually quite a rewarding process.1 -
Besides all the creepy stuff going around deepin, I have to say it's the first distro that made forget I was using Linux.16
-
Am moving back to linux again, after having lived on arch for three years , I decided to give windows a try . It's been less than five months, I can't do it, I just can't.
Anyway , am trying out manjaro with deepin , atleast until cutefish works1 -
Finding a good Linux distro part 2:
Installed Deepin OS, was impressed, was happy. Found out Deepin repos are older than dinosaurs. Tried to setup Ubuntu repos. Restarted. Nothing. OK...8 -
I'm going to my friend's house to download some stuffs for deepin. I thought his internet is faster than mine.
What I get is 😡😡😡
Note:- I did not abused him bcoz he gave me 500gb hard disk.1 -
I have no idea why and how people get adware/malware/spyware/viruses, ransomware, and the like on Windows machines. I've been using Windows since I was a small child and on the machines I've used (mainly my older brother's), automatic updates were always off. I only had a virus issue once because I was small didn't know what I was doing at the time, but that was easily fixed by my brother.
Bottom line: Fuck Windows and all the drivers it broke that one time I decided to enable updates
P.S. I started using Linux a few years ago, and it's been pretty wonderful! I've used dozens of different distros, but I still can't get away from Windows because games, certain programs, and compatibility issues (like some drivers and devices not properly working in Linux), so oh well6 -
Life has been cluttered for a while. Currently backing up important files to reset my Windows laptop and also install deepin OS.
May be even install MacOS on it just for fun.
Hoping for a fresh start to 20172 -

Anyone using it? How's the software support and overall experience?2 -
Anyone facing issue while using multiple screens with Latest version DEEPIN OS ?
In my case the two extension monitors are not getting signal6
