Shout out to devs who put comments in your code I'm so done with my team rn
Also we have slack for a reason stop texting me to update everyone on changes...2 -
In my hunt for the perfect productivity app I came upon something called Freeter.
It is a productivity app that lets me gather what I need for the work I'm working on, and then manage it all in one place.
For me, It's super nice to be able to check tasks in Trello, or communicating in Slack without having to change tabs or open a new browser.
Try it out and tell me what you think8 -
1969:
-what're you doing with that 2KB of RAM?
-sending people to the moon
2017:
-what're you doing with that 1.5GB of RAM?
-running Slack7 -
Watch your git commit messages, you never konw when a webhook might publish the whole thing to Slack...9

micromanager: "Quick and easy win! Please have this done in 2-3 days to start repairing your reputation"
ticket: "Scrap this gem, and implement your own external service wrapper using the new and vastly different Slack API!"
slack: "New API? Give me bearer tokens! Don't use that legacy url crap, wth"
prev dev: "Yeah idk what a bearer token is. Have the same url instead, and try writing it down so you don't forget it?"
Slack admin: "I can't give you access to the slack integration test app, even though it's for exactly this and three others have access already, including your (micro)manager."
Slack: "You can also <a>create a new slack app</a>!" -- link logs me into slack chat instead. After searching and finding a link elsewhere: doesn't let me.
Slack admin: "You want a new test slack app instead? Sure, build it the same as before so it isn't abuseable. No? Okay, plan a presentation for it and bring security along for a meeting on Friday and I'll think about it. I'm in some planning meetings until then."
asdfjkagel.
This job is endless delays, plus getting yelled at over the endless delays.
At least I can start on the code while I wait. Can't test anything for at least a week, though. =/17 -
Walking up to my computer, on autopilot i typed my password to unlock it, pressed enter ...aaand realised it was unlocked and I just sent my password in the clients general slack channel.
Quickly changed it to a smiley and pretended it was raining..
Any one else who mistakenly typed a password or other secrets in a slack channel or similar? XD10 -
PM (on slack): "we’re about to deploy to production".
Me: "ok"
… I keep on working on a task / remain available for any post deployment issues …
PM (5 minutes later on slack): "deployment broke production! We need to handle this NOW!"
My dev colleague has already called it a day, but I’m still online
Me: "ok I don’t have access to prod, can you describe what’s going on? I can’t reproduce on any other environment"
PM: …
10 minutes go by
Me: "anybody there?"
PM: …
45 minutes later, I realize PM is offline
The following day:
PM: "ok we got prod running again" (turns out it was client’s fault for not updating a config we as devs can’t access)
PM: "but we’re REALLY UPSET! You guys need to be available to intervene for any issues following deployment to production! At least one of you should be available!"
Me: "but, but…" 🫠14 -
I work for a company that is 100% remote. Slack just went down. We're doomed, on Halloween of all days.3
-
why is it so hard to convince people to start using slack chat and giving up sending internal emails?10
-
Me on Slack:
I was looking for the `busy` status here in slack but there's only `active` and `away`. That's when I realized why this app was called `Slack` in the first place. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯3 -
Colleague started a slack channel for our team, management wanted nothing to do with it. We used it to work and have a bit of fun.
Some push / drive came form somewhere and now all the managers are on it. Yesterday I was told my screenshot and "snarky comment" are not appropriate for the workplace and to delete my slack message.
My comment was a joke about about a new app the company has to use "to increase efficiency" that broke and wouldn't let me do what I needed. It wasn't offensive, demeaning, sexist to anyone or even contain any bad language.
How petty and childish to be monitoring a private channel making sure everything is positive. We all joked that from now on our meme's must be about how awesome the company is and how much time we are saving on a daily basis.
God forbid we're allowed to speak honestly and openly or have a bit of fun.7 -
Slack: A tool for teams to collaborate and work efficiently
Instead
Slack: A way to share memes at work
Advice... Don't open slack at work 😂3 -
Have I mentioned lately how much I LOVE the stability of slack (and electron apps in general)?
Got notified of a new message in slack, clicked the channel and this is what I see, even after a restart. No content or UI controls of any kind are being rendered. No workspaces, no loading spinners, no errors, no warnings ... just nothing.
I don't give a fuck about your integrations, apps, giphy, video calls, search, threading ... I just want to read text.
Piece of fucking shit9 -
We have a group slack chat for my class which was intended to be a space for asking questions about assignments and getting help from your peers. Instead it has become a dick measuring contest in there where guys who know very little can act all high and mighty about their (plain wrong, in some instances) facts they're distributing without care. It pisses me off so much seeing how toxic it has become in there. It's the same 5 guys using it to bully each other and God forbid anyone else asks a question, they'll be mocked for not being confident handing in a solution they aren't sure is right. Why can't people treat each other with respect? We're in school to LEARN. Not impress other students with how much (read: little) we know. GJ, guys. You created a smaller version of stack overflow.4

*Copies url from bitbucket*
*Switch to Slack on macOS*

Slack: whaaaaaaaaaat :O I'm gonna freeze for few moments to understand what the fuck you just asked me to do4 -
"How My Startup Failed Because My Developers Spent All Day Using Giphy Reactions On Slack" - An honest Medium post no-one has written.2

Okay, this is me panicking. We're switching to Microsoft Teams at work. This means that I will have to cut the Slack and switch to a fucking Microsoft solution for chat. Am I supposed to be worried?24
-
OMG. I accidentally click into my own name on the Slack DM list, and what wonderful resource did I just find? HOW LONG have I been ignoRANT of this wonderful repo for my fave .gif contributions to project channels???!?!?!?3
-
So my company finally decided to make the shift from using irc for internal chats to Slack.
After a month of patiently waiting for my team to make the shift, I went ahead asked one of my (young) fellow teammate why he hasn't shifted to Slack yet. His reply:
"What's Slack?"8 -
I built our slack bot messages so that they are prefixed in BIG LETTERS with whatever system they originate from, i.e.:
"DEVELOP: You are a useless product manager"
"STAGING: You are a useless product manager"
"PRODUCTION: You are a useless product manager"
One of these is when a payment is made on our platform. Our lovely product manager proceeds to message me, "did you just trigger a payment in the test system?".
YES, OBVIOUSLY I DID SEEING AS THE MESSAGE HAS THE GIANT WORD "STAGING" IN FRONT OF IT!!!

Error: "Slack prevented your Mac from updating last night."
Good job Slack. You can take the rest of the day off.2 -
Anybody uses Slack at work
My whole company freaked out today because Slack servers were down
It was hilarious 😂2 -
When someone comes to your desk and asks "did you get my slack message".... Which they sent 23 seconds ago 😒4
-
I've been training a client for a few months now to not use Slack for sharing passwords and other secure materials.
I really thought I had made great progress. I even had him using a password manager. Then out of nowhere he sends the wildcard SSL key pair to me and a handful of other devs in a Slack thread.
At least we aren't storing important information like medical records. Oh wait, that's exactly what we're doing.6 -
My company just announced we are leaving Slack for Google Chat because it is a "superior" (and cheaper) tool.
FML13 -
UGH the Slack dark theme hack broke with the newest version of Slack. apparently the Slack devs have had a dark theme "on the to-do list" for over 2 years. COME THE FUCK ON SLACK, ITS A CSS FILE.6
-
I finaly managed to make a dark mode on slack desktop app! Still has some bugs (like scrollbar being white) but works well enough for me. If anyone is interested tell me in the comments 🙂
How i did it (Linux paths but should be the same process for Windows):
You can execute scripts in /usr/lib/slack/resources/app.asar.unpacked/src/static/index.js
Using that i figgured out that slack desktop is basically an actual webview to their website and some os hooks.
To edit the contents of the webview you can call `document.getElementsByClassName('WebViewContext')[0].executeJavaScript("alert(1)")`
Then i just simply packaged up some custom css to be loaded with JS.
Quite simple actually.
Using this method you can create all kinds of plugins for slack, so go wild!3 -
*team worried about Slack conversations being tracked in the company*
Solution: Shared text file over network. Edit and save it for private communication. Best idea ever?29 -
Forget about coffee, nothing wake you up faster than a colleague mentioning your name in the slack channel where the stderr of the app writes.1
-
I hate Skype for Business with a passion. It's the most garbage useless chat program imaginable. It can barely send basic text chats without throwing an error, and it can almost never send an image without the upload failing. The fact that it can't even save conversation history for each of your chats within Skype is ridiculous -- it fucking saves the conversation as an email draft in Outlook. Come on Microsoft, why do I have to open a completely separate program to view conversation history?! Skype conversation history should be saved IN SKYPE! Fucking AIM was able to save conversation history. I've tried multiple times to get the company to move to Slack or Teams, and for some reason they think that Skype is a good program and they ignore the fact that it's completely useless. It's 2019, why are we using a program that's built like it's 2009? I swear they haven't updated Skype at all in the last decade20
-
When you ask a short question(in Slack) to your teammate that can be simply answered in Slack and they start a video call immediately after reading your question...
Now you have to stop music/video, clean the background...1 -
I hate the dumbass people that send on slack: "good morning", "good afternoon" or "how are you?" and do not say anything until I reply. If you do this FUCK YOU!! Just ask the fucking question. Now I just ignore everybody until the question is made11
-
Random Person in Company Slack: "Hi! Good Morning. How are you?"
Me (in my head): "Just raise a ticket...." 😓 😓6 -
Created a zip file with Linux Mint Archive Manager ... Tried to send it to a collegue via Slack ...6
-
When somebody asks you what IRC is and the only way you can explain it is 'It's like Slack, but before Slack.'1
-
Today, I had new instructions at my work : report what I do
- in the redmine ticket
- in the project slack channel
- in the project manager's slack channel
- in the slack channel where there are 3 people monitoring
- face to face
- in an activity report
and this, several times a day
Can we call this micromanagement ? 🤯7 -
To get myself into a better relation with golang, I started working on an electronless, cancer free, cross platform lightweight slack client.
I will be using the Fyne UI lib, and am already in love with it.
So far my mockup UI compiles into a fully portable >20Mb binary. the netcode shouldnt take any more than that, hoping to end up with a ~50Mb project.
TL;DR:
- theres gonna be a lightweight slack client available at one point
- fyne is awesome, get it at https://fyne.io/8 -
This is response I got from my ex tech lead in a company that I left six months ago..
Btw account is registered on my private email and has admin access to Slack full of confidential files.
Don't even know why I worked there..13 -
Slack, my boss and I:
Me: Lucky I left when I did, I'll get through that fix when I'm less 🤢
Boss: Don't worry, take care of Harold now
Boss: If that's what we're calling the parasite
I recently found out I have a parasite, which I brought from India, living in my intestine. I'm on antibiotics. We're three devs at a startup running two products and on a shoestring... so Harold and I get our assets to office.10 -
Workplace starts using slack (or other chat app);
Now you can use channels: now your inbox has inboxes and you don't know where to look.
Now channels support threads: now your inboxes have inboxes have inboxes.
1,000 books on productivity and research show how important deep work is and time boxing your email:
Now your inboxes that have inboxes thst have expect your attention every moment of the day.. And I still don't know where to look.3 -
Slack is scared as hell about Microsoft Teams that is targeted to enterprise customers.
Did you hear about the full page newspapar ad they did?... Passive aggressive move by slack5 -
!rant Scheduled Slack message from myself after hours to myself during work hours:
“Hey idiot,
The thing you need to do is [solution]. Trust me.
Sincerely,
Past you
PS: Drink some gd water.”
*followed by panicked double-checking I’d actually sent it to myself and not a coworker*2 -
Co-employee in Slack: Let's get this bread
*1 hour later*
That guy: Bread has been acquired
Meanwhile me: *Forgot to eat breakfast and read the sentence wrong*
God I wish I was that guy5 -
I accidentally chat this on our general channel on Slack.
"I've noticed you can tell how much a British person likes you based on the amount of insults they give you."
The problem is, minute has passed. How I wish I have the time machine.5 -
I try to convince my boss to choose Slack and not Microsoft teams.
What's your opinion on these apps ?14 -
I dread the day that Slack has a “... has read this message 2 seconds ago” feature. Please Slack, continue letting me pretend I haven’t seen that message that I don’t want to reply to.2
-
So after the original idea getting scraped during a hackathon this week, we created a slack bot to fetch most relevant answers from StackOverflow using user's input. All the user had to do was input few words and the bot handled all typos, links etc and returned the link as well as the most upvoted or the accepted amswer after scraping it from the website.
The average time to find an answer was around 2 seconds, and we also told that we're planning to use flask to deploy a web application for the same.
After the presentation, one of the judge-guys called me and told me that "It isn't good enough, will not be used widely" and "Its similar to Quora".
Never ever have I wanted to punch a son of a bitch in the balls ever.3 -
We did it guys, devRant bot is now on the Slack marketplace so hopefully we will see some new faces around.
https://slack.com/apps/...3 -
Interesting. A few hours ago I had a nice domestic conversation with my coleague about robot vacuum cleaners. He was talking about iRobot Roomba and I was talking about Xiaomi. Here's the result!
Interesting thing is that we talked in a *voice* conversation. Over Slack. Over Chrome. Over corporate VPN (openconnect).
Where's the spying link? Slack or Chrome?
My bet's on Chrome.
What does that tell you about the privacy of your sensitive conversations? :)
Hide behind VPNs all you like. If you have proprietary software (or hardware in the case of Huawei) - you're being watched and listened to.
EDIT: I'm on Linux, he's on MacOS9 -
Here is a sidebar theme for slack based on the devRant colour scheme.

So I work for an ISP in the customer support center and we use slack for communication... As you can tell by my starred channels; we do plenty of work...
(Yes, potato is dedicated to nothing but potato)6 -
Slack is cool and all... But do we really have to have an "account per team" ? Damn I cringed so hard when I was setting up two-factor authentication and realized it was this way... Wtf...6
-
*Writes Slack message*
*Sends*
*Notices mistake*
*Goes to edit*
*Accidentally pins message*
*Goes to edit*
*Accidentally deletes*
*Gives up on life*3 -
Leave developers in a room long enough and they'll drop verbal communication in favour of irc/slack/discord3

How to slack during work like a pro? (if you are a unity developer)
1- make a full screen youtube player inside Unity.
2- fill most of the screen with panels (debug, file browser... etc)
3- watch a video about overwatch or something.
enjoy!!4 -
Didn't go to class on Friday cause some asshole broke into my car. Checked slack for my homework over the weekend before bed and...nothing.
Check slack 2 hours ago... huge project due in 7 hours... wtf slack thanks for no notification and updating my messages late as fuck...
Time to brew some coffee I guess.1 -
My boss does this management by neglect thing - he is hardly in the office and mostly communicates in slack. Today it got really vague and ambiguous.
So - when 4 people don't understand your slack message - the obvious conclusion is that you hired 4 morons...2 -
Fuck-a-doodle-do Fuck Fuck Fuck what a fucking dipshit. Scared the god damn shit out of me.
So I am deep in code, listening to my music pounding out some code and Drupal configurations and I feel a shadowy draft over my right side like someone is watching me.
I work with a guy that will not for the fucking life of me use Slack to send me a message when I have my headphones on or at all for that matter.
He gets up and walks to my cubicle and just stares with a goofy fucking grin on his face. You know the one. LIke a retarded fucking dog eating shit out of a wire brush. Yeah that's the grin. Silently derping with his fucking derp ass Derp McDerpington face waiting on you to turn around an notice him there instead of knocking on the cubicle wall or waving to get your attention.
The FUCK dude? CreepyPasta2 -
Can someone explain some of my colleagues that THEY DON'T FUCKING NEED A DIFFERENT SLACK TEAM FOR EVERYTHING!
Want to have some random talk? Let's create a new Slack team
Want to add notifications from Git? Let's create a new Slack team
Want to try some new bot they found? Let's create another fucking Slack team3 -
Me: Ugh. I always forget to change my Slack status before leaving my computer. I wish it would just update when I locked my computer. And maybe cleared the status/set me back to active when I unlocked my computer.
*realization that I’m a programmer now*
——
A week later:
... it throws a nilError exception on every running of the Automator action to the stderr file it’s configured with, but it does what I programmed it to do. What? Why? What have I done?4 -
My boss and I, with a normal morning greeting in slack
Me: morning boss, how are you?
Boss: very good and you?
Me: marvelous. hey boss, do you have a secret entry to your office? I didn't see you coming
Boss: hahaha, front door :| . And I greeted everyone too
Me: :( sorry
Boss: Microsleep 😂
Me: 😎 nope, extreme concentration
Me: it's a new development methodology, born from extreme programming
Boss: 😶3 -
Little story, about how i get things fucked up.
I've been working for two nights on some project, and we have notifications in slack about new commits, and i've been working for myself, not pulling any commits for this time, cause no notifications 've been received, and then when i've tried to commit&push i've realized that there is 14 commits before me, and someone just accidentally turned off notifications :C1 -
I haven't ranted since I joined my current job back in late 2018 because I've been in absolute bliss, extremely happy and feeling in the right place.
...And now here I am: due to some corporate shit we had to migrate from Slack to Teams and man TEAMS IS A SHIT.11 -
Wtf, just heard on the news about the IPO of Slack, it now has a company worth of 25 billion dollars. I always thought of Slack as a normal startup that is kinda successful, but 25 billion is unbelievable.5
-
drives me crazy when people send log or code snippets in slack and don't create a code snippet and send through as a plain message.2
-
My react developer tool popped up to tell me that my company slack is using the development build of react not fit for production...1
-
This week's huge fuck you goes to... Drumroll please...
Slack!
You earned this prize for your stupid auto-sleep if there is no interaction for x minutes!
I don't want to install your crap software on my system, so i am forced to alt tab every 15 minutes just to press space and then delete, because God forbids i am being productive on my freaking IDE, second computer, test device and/or meeting!
Also lovely how phone notifications are not sent on mobile unless you are on sleep mode... How could I ever ask for urgent notifications if i take a small break? Oh, right! I should go to sleep mode, so people will think i didn't touch your shitware for 30 mins every fucking time i go to the toilet! :D
Please get your prize whenever possible!12 -
When you have to lock down #general in #slack because people cant be responsible.
Then get stuck making #bs-general and other #bs prefixed channels so that people know if they join them they will be annoyed.4 -
Things nobody asked for: Yet another Slack redesign.
FFS keep the design stable, I like to remember where shit is. Stop moving it around every three months.6 -
Why doesn't Slack have an option to mute an entire workspace? It can only mute individual channels in the workspace, like sure, I want to manually mute every single fucking channel when I'm no vacation, and then unmute them when I come back. Who the fuck thought that was a good idea? For fucks sake, Discord can do it, but the most popular enterprise chat lacks such a basic feature.10
-
I love a number of the little slack "all clean" icons when you catch up on threads. They're adorable. My personal favorite is the floptopus.
Anyone else have fave examples of adorable, ideally platform mascot-related pieces of task-accomplishment-reward-bait (octocat, go gopher, etc etc?
It's a rant bc fuck anyone who's too cool for cute shit :p7 -
Slack’s “Huddle” is beautiful. A game changer. It is just so easy to enter and exit a call now.
Good work, Slack!11 -
I hate when one of my cw starts to flood the chat, especially the #general. It goes like:
CW: hey
CW: anyone have a pendrive
CW: ?
Me: I have one (and tells him where he can find on my desk)
Another CW: I have one too
CW: thanks, I'll get the one from <Another CW>
CW: hahahahahaha
You don't need to write a whole thesis in a single message, but at least you should guarantee that each message have some meaningful information, not just "hey", "?" and "hahaha"
Slack is not MSN.
Who should and when it would be a good time to tell him this is a waste of attention?8 -
Today's my company's official final day with Slack.
Starting tomorrow it's nothing but the "superior" Google Chat. I will have no choice but to join the others who have already migrated over.
FML
It also mean I won't have any access to messaging outside the office because I don't want to accept the security certs on my phone.2 -
Slack's latest update just broke the darkify hack. It's 2019, right? It is unbelievable that there is no built-in dark mode for Linux, Mac, or even windows. I mean, they are aware of dark mode. It is available on mobile without trouble. Get it together, slack!11
-
I don't care for Slack. There's nothing wrong with Slack. I just don't find a need for it when I already had email + IM. You know what I hate, though. People who show up one day and force Slack down the throat of an organization because "collaboration". Now, every day I hear "I didn't see that. Oh, you put in on Slack? Which channel?", "I put in on Slack", "I don't ever check my email, I just have Slack open", "Instead of filling up your inbox, I'm going to post this on 15 different slack channels" (which is why I have all the channels muted). All from people who can't type 10 words in a row without an emoji.3
-
Seriously I think the Slack apps are really among the worst I have ever had to use. That is both on mobile (iOS) and desktop (Mac). It’s super slow thanks to Electron Desktop and super buggy on mobile. Connection Speed is really slow as well.
I just hate it.8 -
The fun with the Slack continues (context: https://devrant.com/rants/5552410/...).
I got in touch with their support (VERY pleasant experience!). Turns out, even though I specify a `filetype` when uploading a file via Slack's API, Slack ignores it and still scans the payload and tries to determine its type itself. They say Slack needs to be absolutely certain that the file will be readable within Slack.
IDK about you, but that raises some flags for me. I again have that itch to password-zip all the files I'm sending over.
I've raised this concern to the support rep. Waiting for his comments.6 -
In january this year i convinced my whole team to switch from Skype to Stride. And now Stride announced that they are teaming up with Slack... I am going to look like complete idiot because we have to switch once again ... 😥5
-
Notifications are not being sent from github to slack. Ok. Looks like that legacy slack github integration that has been telling us its no longer supported for months has finally been deactivated.
Fine. I'll cave and upgrade all 45 of our repos to the new integration.
Thousands of clicks later, finally done.
*but wait*
"Notifications still don't work?"
That's when I saw this notice on github.
FML I want my hour back.3 -
I hate people editing slack messages.
Here it goes...
1. I receive a slack message (notification sound while working)
After 5 mins of finishing my work...
2. I open slack to look at the message
3. The message says just a hyphen with an edited sign. Why tf you have to edit the message when you can delete it? Or better, don't send it in the first place.
Why people? Why?2 -
Don't know if i'm alone or not.. so i'm gonna leak my secret that my rubber ducky is actually a slack channel i made in my company's slack
-
Slack has to be joking. I just wanted to use it in my browser, because their beautiful and definitely not electron based app takes 600MB RAM. Fuck you Slack!3
-
1969:
-what're you doing with that 2KB of RAM?
-sending people to the moon
2017:
-what're you doing with that 1.5GB of RAM?
-running Slack5 -
[slack]: here's a nice workspace name. Let's take it.
Workspace started to be unusable (constant refresh). Ticket sent.
[us]: We should delete it and create it again.
Few minutes later - workspace name unavailable. Ticket sent.
(48h later)
[slack]: my precious!!!1 -
Normal colleagues pick the right slack channel and post a message there.
My colleague picks a random channel that has no relation to dev at all and posts a question/request there.
He must be using a random script to pick the next channel name :D -
3 more workdays and then this nightmare of MS Teams will be over. I swear when Microsoft planned that they had a list of everything Slack did right and told the team if anything on that list was included they would be hung up by their unmentionables with fish hooks.5
-
Needed a code review urgently. As I’m the only mobile dev in my team I posted my request in a mobile group channel on Slack asking for someone to take a look. I used @here to notify everyone that’s currently online and I got slammed for using @here in the channel because people got a bloody notification. Grow a pair and stop being a fucking snowflakes. This is a company Slack channel and I am asking you to take a look at company critical PR why wouldn’t I use @here20
-
When the colleague that you're arguing with on a slack channel is an administrator. He has the power to delete anything you post that makes him look like a dick.
I will not submit to this reign of tyranny!3 -
Slack or HipChat?
Using HipChat from last 1.5 years. We got many bots written for HipChat to automate process. So I think it's gonna be challenging to switch to slack.8 -
Am I the only one who thinks that Slack is so terribly expensive for a small company?
I'd like less gap between "free" and 8$/month/user...10 -
When slack is down for 3 hours, but ur boss facetimes u and ses we need to review CVS and then u need to stop playing euro truck simulator and start working 🙃.4
-
We're using Slack for team communication.
After a lot of crappy slack apps I installed the snippetsbot today.
It's just great. Simple but really efficient. I love that damn little thing.5 -
Let me check Slack
Just before I go to bed
Just in case — OH NO
It’s not what you think
It isn’t like I broke prod
… request makes me cringe.3 -
Boss uses @here in Slack channel, waits 5 seconds then tags me and another dev. Not sure he understands how @here works.1
-
I really hate it when people ignore the messages I sent on slack
I don't mention you or the damn @channel for show
There is some shit that needs to get done, and I even hate it more when they ask me for something I already said on slack
Whaaaaat, you can't read now -
Why the fuck don’t people add their job titles on Slack!!! You’ll get a random message or bug report and you’ll have to go back to Bamboo Hr to know what team the idiot work in.3
-
well that's curious... Apparently, when uploading a csv file via bot, Slack now appends a .py suffix to it.
I wonder what's the logic behind it. Trick as many users as possible into executing potentially malicious code?21 -
devRant bot will be going down shortly while it is moved to Beep Boop.
After this transition, you will be required to reauthorize the bot with your Slack team.
You will be able to do this here: https://beepboophq.com/bots/... -
I'm always thinking people are telling me to "sock it to me" when they've actually said "Slack it to me."
-
Now that I have to use Microsoft Teams chat, I don't find Slack that bad anymore. Teams doesn't support threads, source code is poorly formatted without any syntax highlighting, and emojis look shitty.11
-
Recently we created a Slack team with co-workers and our boss. Everybody was shocked when we saw his username. It is "armageddon". Like a fucking gamer child.2
-
Man slack is so evil and shit. They wont let you access conversion history without paid plan.WTF?!! That is so evil!
I hope they rot and die in hell. Fuck slack.11 -
So, as you may be aware, I work as solo dev for small company. There is easly enough work for team, but I digress..
So, they wanted to stay updated whats progress on some projects. We use slack. I use git. I set up account for them so they can come into my git and controll if issues are solved, etc. I wont get started about any dev ever beeing judged by how much code is outputted, beyond scope of this.
So they started bitching about that git is too technical and too complicated and shit. They made bizzare bullshit google excel (not even in polish) and stupidass form to "audit issues". Hmm.. wtf. I just didnt use it becouse it was slowing me down and was just frustrating, how one can replace git + issue tracker with fucking spreadsheet?!
Okay, so having that aside, I complained about that so they were like "okay, so you want to use git and we want to be notified. whats your solution" me "oh, you want to stay notified, thats easy, I can plug my git into slack"
Now our slack is spammed to oblivion with git notifications.
Now they are annoyed that they are too notified. (Yes I consulted with them what will be plugged into slack)
Oh well
¯\_(ツ)_/¯2 -
New Marketing Person: [via slack] Hey! I left a comment on the JIRA ticket. I didn’t know how to tag you so I’m messaging you here to make sure you see it.
Me: [slack] Ok, thanks for letting me know. It works the same way it does in slack. Type “@“ followed by a name.
Me: [inner monologue] 🙄 You could have also just Googled it instead of expending energy and time on this slack exchange.
Same person leaves another JIRA comment later… and doesn’t tag me…Why do I even bother to be helpful…2 -
Slack sort your shit out. slightly_smiling_face ??? Stop making me doubt the authenticity of the smile emoji.1
-
Anyone else find slack a time waster unless you are actively working on a team? I feel it fails when used for a user group: l have left most slack teams because it is like repeatedly looking in the fridge and not finding anything interesting.4
-
People that dont use slack threads.
Fuck em.
"Yeah, lets use slack, it is much more organized and will improve structured conversation"
And then they never fuckn use the god damn CORE feature but dump their replies into the channel like monkeys throwing their shit around everywhere except in the place the shits supposed to go.3 -
Does it bother you when a co-worker keeps talking on phone all day long and it's not work related? It bothers me.5
-
I was watching cards @ rams on Monday. Commercials were on so naturally I was using my phone when suddenly I hear the slack's notification sound from somewhere in the room. I look up thinking what teammate is messaging me and what could they possibly want, only to realize there's a slack advert on and the notification sound came from it. Why would slack show ad mid NFL games AND put a sound that everyone associates with work? I am 🤏 close to suing slack for causing work trauma outside work hours1
-
Worst thing about having internet during your holiday is receiving Slack messages.
Do people honestly expect that I’m gonna help fix their problem while I’m sitting at the pool?6 -
>Finds an URL that causes some sort of internal bug in a client's webapp
>Subsequent requests fill up the server's PHP-FPM slots, waiting for a session exclusive lock that never comes
>Effectively DoS's the server
>Sends it to a colleague to discuss the possible causes
>Uses slack
>Forgets Slack happily indexes any link it's given
>Slack almost DoS the service
FUN -
slack seems to be having issues with connectivity currently.
sweet, maybe I can actually get some work done!
or maybe i'll just browse devrant for a few more minutes. who's gonna know? -
As a company we have reduced the number of emails we send each other. We use slack and for the most part it is very good.
It's also very resource intensive and some computers we have tend to choke after a little while.
Does anyone know of any open source alternatives we could look at.
(slack is a little expensive too. We're a startup)4 -
I see the devrant community exists on slack.
Is it official?
Any way to get in?
Otherwise, is there an alternative?2 -
Am I the only one who hates that Slack has added a new `Drafts` section?
Like WHY TF? On one hand, I'm having some important work talk, and then I realize that I cannot see my boss's chat anymore and then I have to always look up and see the horrible Drafts section.
Although it is becoming second nature after a million times, I just don't like this feature at all.
IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF THE END?7 -
I seriously don't get what's with everybody trying to copy each other now so much and release something under a different name or description (e.g. chats were yesterday, we do high velocity communcation now) and or adding almost no features, doist (company behind todoist) released "twist", which is literally just slack or a forum, just worse...?
https://blog.todoist.com/2017/06/...
edit: they even show slack as the go to tool in the past, but didn't discover actual channels..? I am missing the point here completely2 -
i really can't understand, why devs use Slack, HipChat or other Cloud Chats for internal communication.
Its even worse that three of my team use Hipchat in a Channel which the Mod is a former employee!2 -
Is anyone using Slack? I just downloaded it in order to use it with Laravel notifications. How is your experience with this?3
-
It really grinds my gears when new hires just start adding themselves to every fucking slack channel and then start crapping up the channel history with irrelevant chatter.
Business Analysts and Project Managers do not need to be in #developers sending mock-ups to a UI/UX designer for one team, or posting an xkcd strip you found on the internet because you "got it" and you think you are proving that you are one of us by posting it there. This channel isn't a fucking club, its where ALL developers at this company across all teams share tools and practices for us to maintain consistency and best practices and to improve our craft, or to give a heads-up about vulnerabilities.
There is a specific channel for your role, and your project. You don't need to be everywhere and in every conversation. And for fuck's sake, PLEASE stop @someone adding people to these channels just because you think you saw something in there posted by someone else that they should see. You can just fucking share that message directly with that person, or in another channel.8 -
Is it just me or is the majority of all additional slack apps really just crap? Many cannot even be installed because the website is no longer available (WorkingOn as an example).
Not a single app really helps us in our workflow. I lost the interest to try more of them :(1 -
The go-getter boss sets us up on basecamp. ( Mind you, this is just two weeks after starting us on Slack )
The first topic of discussion he puts out is "What would you suggest to improve meetings?" Considering the business genius has cancelled the past 5 office meetings, I replied with "The key to a successful meeting is actually having them."
Basecamp's been pretty quite ever since.1 -
I created a bit that posts Simpsons scenes in slack chats. Mostly because I was bored and wanted to learn
https://github.com/vj--/droidbot -
// Start rant
Jesus fucking Christ! Why the fuck does Slack have such a poor support for gifs?! A command? Seriously? What the fuck!
// End rant
How’s your Friday going?2 -
Having flexible working hours but also having a boss that goes in early and expects you to respond to slack messages before you are even out of bed.
It's the morning let me sleep... -
So slack is great. It really is. But you can't bulk delete messages so if you're using the free version prepare to delete 10k by hand.
Yeah so our team is switching to something like chanty.
http://chanty.com
Any suggestions for free team messaging tools?13 -
Someone in the #us slack channel posted about how, if other Americas were dealing with roe v wade, they could come to the mental health channel.
I really want to respond about how Americans are a diverse group, and some are thankful for a judgement that preserves what some consider life, and to keep our diverse opinions in mind.
But I'm not going to. I'm not stupid. It's not worth starting a fight or potentially losing a job over. So I remain silent, like a coward.
I earn a lot of money, enough to ignore ideology I don't agree with, and messages that would have been considered totally inappropriate at one time.21 -
That feeling when it takes you three hours to figure out that the reason it seems like your application is running the same logic following a match as it does before a match is made is because it is. Because the post route being used by the Slack bot to notify users of a match is the same post route being used when users message the Slack bot looking for a match.
*face desk*
I feel like an idiot. -
I used to hate email and to consider it a chore but after adopting "inbox zero", switching from web based shit to a proper client and automating the management of the many automatic notifications I get everyday I'm starting to think which when well managed email is still one of the best asynchronous communication tools, far better than sluggish and distracting chats like Teams or Slack which have their place but I think which currently they're pretty overrated.
-
So our HR and Network Admin are building an "intranet" off site and I just discovered they asked for a feature that is gonna make slack irrelevant... They both know shit about slack and we who do know something where just perplexed to the amount of money thrown away here with shit like that...
-
I wish Slack had a block feature. On a social Slack, someone lashed out me and started accusing me of horrible things. Admins did nothing after I complained and said my anger wasn’t in proportion to the situation. Fuck that.
The lasher out accused me of ableism, povertyism, and condoning human rights violations. It was so outrageous that even a bystander tried to intervene because lasher out was clearly acting out on a trigger and I had not done anything to deserve it.
I had this problem with the lasher out before, but this time they went too far.
So I have one less social platform to engage with. Good riddance. I’m not participating in a place that is not a safe space.
I thought Facebook would be the one I unplugged first.11 -
Are there any open-source Slack alternatives? Slack is nice, but I would rather host my own thing.9
-
I found this article today ( http://thenextweb.com/apps/2016/... ) and within minutes my team started abusing poor scorebot on slack. Didn't take long until we had to uninstall.
-
https://github.com/haskellcamargo/...
This is a slack click client. The description reads..
"The best CLI client for slack, because everything is terrible!"
I checked it out and it's indeed terrible.
Made my fuckin morning -
So we are testing slack as our new messaging platform, it states that the platform has 10k searchable messages, does that mean that you can send unlimited messages with 10k searchable, or 10k messages total before you have to start paying?5

!rant .
Interesting conversation between coworker 1, 2 and 3.
1 : “ hey do you know if you want to sounds like Australians , start eating spiders. Alternatively you can try to eat kiwi to sound familiar to Australian but isn’t.
2 : “ I fancy myself sugary juices and burgers everyday, but yet I am not becoming American.”
1: “No pal you should start drinking petroleum and yell FREEDOM and ‘this is my right!’ every chances you get. That’s how you become a US citizen without the green card .”
3: “bro, you are taking you are what you eat too literally and stereotypically. Let say if you guys would to suck my dick and drain my semen down your throat, won’t me you my son . But I will get the pleasure.”
John : “Yo what the fuck?”
3: “the real question is ‘yo wanna fuck?’”
1 :”you sus bro”
2: “I’m going to pretend I didn’t read that one .”
John :” 1, which ‘you’ you are referring to? 2, of course you didn’t with that amount of sugary juices.”
2: “hey this is my right!”
John: *mute the off-topic channel *
Yo like what the fuck .14 -
Why isn't Gooogle buying Atlassian to stock up G Suite with Wiki and Slack, then piss off Microsoft and win the Market over with better products?
Im reading everywhere now that MS Teams has the hugest Userbase and so much features to come bla bla bla
Fuck MS Teams, it's shit, looks like it and it's software so I can't smell it. Thank god for that, else it would smell like the afterback of a diaarhetic horse.
Every fucking Tecnician at my company is arguing, that MS Teams is better, because more users are active. WTF Poopface, they have more user, because it comes included with O365???
Our people are so stupid, I bet they won the IT Certification in a Lottery or flew to Turkey to buy it at a Bazaar.
And who the fuck are the Product Managers at Google, gonna hit them a couple of times with a broom to wake up. You fucktards are missing a huge market.7 -
Having my first work from home today lets see how it goes with slack and mail in my hands as my work from home tools 😄1
-
The team I am working with wants to use Slack. Slack doesn't have night mode.
I am being torn apart.5 -
Created a simple pip package to authenticate incoming slack requests. It provides an out of the box Django permission class to authenticate slack requests.
I've made it open for anyone to check out and use:

Is anybody else bothered by Slack? The way they handle account management and channels bothers me. It solved a problem that didn't exist, and now it has become this ecosystem so many people/organizations are over reliant on.
I feel like AIM had better features in the early 00's.1 -
My slack messages were deleted because of some silly channel policy... Hope those kind of moderator are not available here.. fuck you moderators I have stackoverflow.1
-
This is why you should never add the giphy integration on your slack
(got this the first day of this slack)1 -
I’m just curious, how relevant is slack in the workplace? And is it enjoyable to use or awful like Skype9
-
When you press the up arrow key in iMessage because you made a typo... and realize you're not in Slack anymore.
-
Working on an ongoing task of speeding up one of our applications. Our TFS server sends a message to a Slack channel with the check-in comment each time someone checks in. Amusing myself by using a recurring theme of "The Tortoise and the Hare" fable to explain what I fixed by including the :rabbit2: and :turtle: tags in my TFS check-in comment.
-
It sucks when your company makes the company announcements Slack channel into a spam group for people to post about their daily quarantine life.
It sucks more when you can't leave the channel because it's "mandatory" to be a member of it.

Yippii! Threads in Slack!
This has seriously been almost the only annoying thing in slack - there has been no possibly to answer to a specific message. The share message functionality is not good for that...
https://slackhq.com/threaded-messag...2 -
When is Slack finally going to fix their broken notifications on mobile? I am so pissed everytime I turn on wifi, hundreds of notifications are raping my phone and tablet. But when I actually want to get notifications on my phone (and leave PC running) I get fucking none.1
-
In my company, we have been have been using skype, hipchat, slack and now Teams.
Yet somehow, email always survives.
I get it as a communication channel for external clients as everybody has an email.
Yet when you as a company are using a team messenger, well then use it as your primary communication tool NO EXCEPTIONS or don't use them at all.3 -
Not super ranty but what I’m interested in how passwords are managed in your organisation?
I feel dirty receiving passwords through slack and having a spreadsheet on a shared drive seems like madness.
I’ve worked at organisations before that have a single login to a password manager. However theoretically I still have access to that as no one would have changed the password.
Organisational password manager softwares are really expensive!14 -
Which platform do you recommend for inter-team comm?
We were on skype, but it didn't allow threads.
We have now shifted to Microsoft Teams but some members aren't liking it because it does not have a native App for Linux.
Slack is paid, and we're already paying Microsoft for other features.
There are open source alternatives but we don't have a spare machine to host on...
Suggestions?10 -
Being part of a "super helpful" Slack with hundreds of developers -> only active channel is the giphy channel 🔫1
-
If you're on the Threads page in Slack, why is there no keyboard shortcut to expand new messages and put your cursor in the text box?!?? Using the mouse is slowly killing me on the inside...4

That’s my first hackathon, We where working for 1 full day from 4PM to 6PM next day without having any sleep to give a killer product on integration of multiple applications into one single point (Hard Work)
One team just came chill in the Hackathon went out sleep and made a killer presentation on how to integrate Slack with multiple applications like Jenkins, GutHub and much more to make life simple (Smart Work)
Actually we both lose but their way was implemented in organisation 😝1 -
What is the difference between slack and a normal, old school forum?
Both have threads, PMs, Images, Emoticons, etc.
Is it just the UI that got improved?6 -
seriously why the hell is Slack so fucking stupid! When I click to sign in to the desktop client it opens up a signup page in my browser, but I was just signed in a minuted ago in the fucking workspace!!7
-
Slack is good at a lot of things. But there are two things that have always gotten under my skin. I want:
1) a free tier that doesn't expire messages (it's 2020).
2) a single sign on manager or some way to reliably and seamlessly handle many workspaces across devices.5 -
What is best equivalent to Slack? we switched to Rocket chat but UI is terrible, every one gets confused in channels when there is too many threads and replys. I need a free alternative which we can deploy its dedicated instance on our own server. also I prefer open source software with mobile support and better UI/UX than rocker chat.7
-
Any recommendations for a chat service (like slack or teams) that offer an OUTGOING webhook? Slack does but it is unfortunately going to be deprecated soon which sucks6
-
Whenever I create a new backend and a new slack app for that particular backend.
Most painful thing is to authenticate slack requests.
I know HOW to do it, but I still HAVE to do it.
So, created a pip package for authenticating slack app requests.
Feel free to check it out and leave any feedbacks.
Project: https://github.com/dev-prakhar/... -
What can one do with 8gb of ram?
Run chrome and slack together... fuck this shit... fuck electron.js3 -
When people write me at 5am on Slack or Skype, they think, how nice and organized my life is that I am getting up early. Truth is, I have not slept yet. Programmers never sleep they just check their eyelids from inside. It's easier to stay awake till 6am, than to wake up at 6am!2

Please give us Markdown in Slack already. How can that be much more "difficult" compared to Slack's own formatting?
At least give me the possibility to temporarily disable formatting, e.g. to not make bold when using asterisks. No, using inline code formatting is not a viable option. I simply want to have asterisks shown as normal text. I'm fine with escaping with e.g. backslashes. That's kinda normal.4
