Finally sharing my desk! The team is allowed to work in a dark room, the proper environment for developers.27

Who says a dev doesn't go outside? I barely stay somewhere indoor more than a couple of hours.
Now that everyone is sharing their setups:32 -
Co-worker presented her work by sharing her screen. She forgot to unshare.
She proceeded to open Chrome and search: "Can I sue co-worker if I get coronavirus because he coughed?"
Another employee said: "Your screen is showing" :/13 -

Knocked over a beer bottle with my hand and caught it mid-flight.
Felt like a fucking ninja.
No clue why I'm sharing this but goddamn that was good.3 -
So everyone is sharing their work again, so here is mine.
And no 6 monitors, 1 pc isn't overkill.
Well...
Maybe...
But just a little!
Usually, one is spotify, one iChrome, one development (center bottom), one execution of dev, one email&facebook split and one documentation.24 -
Just sharing the best error message I ever got. Sometimes the application is just as confused as you are...9

Just sharing my experience of my spontaneous interview with Facebook. I'm not good at writing these but here you go :)
- I was working as an Android dev and didn't have much knowledge in algorithms nor competitive programming, never ever interviewed with big companies.
- a random day on LinkedIn, a recruiter from Facebook contacted me
- I ignored it for few week because I thought it's so out of my league, then somehow, out of blue, I had a thought of giving it a try, so I did
- passed first round
- start studying algorithms a little for phone interview in 3 weeks
- recklessly took the phone interview
- passed
- start studying intensively (while working fulltime) for the on-site interview in 2 months
- almost got the job, they gave me one more chance by a followed up interview
- messed up the last chance real bad
- failed!!!
- Initially I just wanted to give it a try, but the fact that I failed at very very last chance, frankly, bothers me a bit. Maybe I will interview with FB or big companies if I have chance later, but I know for sure that the studying had made me a much better dev. All the code I write now is much more efficient (I think), I can and not anymore afraid of reading complicated code.
- Overall, it does takes a lot of time (~4 months studying while working fulltime), but also benefits myself a lot though I didn't get the job, so basically, good experience, but better if I got the job 😁
Oops, wanted to write a few lines and it's a long post already.. I should stop here :D9 -
The easiest way to get into software development: Learn from someone with more experience.
The easiest way to master software development: teach those with less experience than you.
Knowledge sharing is the basis of our industry. I can't ask people to share enough7 -
I've put my blood, sweat and tears into this company in the past years. Worked overtime, evenings, weekends, night shifts to get shit done and helped out in sharing knowledge only to learn a new guy who's still learning has 200 bucks higher pay check than me.
I'm not even sure how to react to this.18 -
Client: Let me send you the files needed.
*client sends link to their own Dropbox folder page, not actually sending a shared link*
Me: Uuuhm, the link you've just send is only viewable by your account.
Client: Oh, hold....
Client a bit later: *sends actual Dropbox credentials over email in plain text*
Why.26 -
!rant: So I've noticed some devs sharing pictures of their workspace. Let me know what you think of mine!17

Colleagues sharing passwords.That was a big fat NO when I was a sysadmin - and for a good reason. But now, since I'm closer to development, it feels like no one really cares about the passwords. If I tell my colleague I'll take 10 minutes more because I can't log in, he OFFERS me his credentials. And sends them over saying "in case you need it". [the next day the same colleague was complaining his account is locked out. Oh, wonders! How on Earth...!]
But seriously, password sharing is a serious problem. I would fire the person on spot if I caught him sharing his credentials! This is the 8th deadly sin! IDC if they are for non-prod. Most people reuse their passwords in multiple systems, and even non-prod envs can bring the prod down! Or worse - install a trojan.15 -
The worst thing I’ve seen a dev do is create a social sharing platform that sells its user data to the highest bidder and then asks for forgiveness after the privacy horse is out of the barn.7

My team was sharing an API key to our company's microservice containing all our customer data.
I say "was" because one team member accidentally published the key online so the security team disabled our key and won't give us a new one.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry4 -

A senior developer come to interrupt me.
Senior developer: blah...blah....blah about this concept...... that concept... So, any new things you learn lately that you would like to share?
Me: I am learning back C++
Immediately he stop me and said, "Why did you learn C++? It is obsolete, no one use it anymore"
Me (in my head): But, you just said what I learn. It doesn't matter if its obsolete or not. Infact you are wrong, C++ is not obsolete anytime soon. I was about to share on webassembly.
Senior developer: So, would you like to join me in a short sharing session this afternoon.
Me: No thanks, I am really busy (just want to avoid at any cost)8 -

@trogus @dfox
Can we have support for
```
snipets
Doesn't even need syntax highlight, just the <pre> behavior.
In support of my request, I know this isn't code sharing but we still quote code and commands alot.
It would be a nice differentiation.12 -
LinkedIn feels like:
Never be egoisitc about your code. Its good to feel proud on your code that you did it. but sharing is caring.. don;t be like only I can do this.. ego is not for dev community.. be adaptable for changes whether you learn from junior or senior :)7
Why management has such orgasmic attachment to numbers?
Example 1.
Mngr: split this into tasks
Me: done
Mngr: now estimate these tasks
Me: can't. Team is new and codebase is unknown. Any estimations would be subjected to huge error and I will not commit to anything if I'm not at least partially sure.
Mngr: but we need some timeline
Me: so give it yourself. I'm not doing it
Example 2.
Mngr: we need to measure how your knowledge sharing sessions impacts our organisation
Me: how?
Mngr: e.g. amount of bugs lessen in next quarter
Me: bugs can go up and down because of hundred other reasons. Also, knowledge sharing is just to inspire people, it's up to them if they keep educating and growing. Me sharing knowledge 1h per week, I can't guarantee they will understand and apply this new knowledge.
Mngr: but we need to measure it somehow, otherwise it is useless.
Me: <speechless facepalm frustrated>22 -
I hired 2 fresh out of school junior devs to work with me on my old web app.
They were brilliant, knew a lot of things, and were motivated.
They started complaining about how the code was shit, the db was shit, there were no best practices, the technology was old, bug fixing was boring, no comments in code.
I felt bad, very bad during 3 years, because they were absolutely right. I tried to work with them through better coding practices, rewriting, documenting etc.
Now they both have left.
I'm alone maintaining and evolving the application.
And I start to come across the code THEY developed.
What a bunch of shit. SQL queries bringing down the server. Duplicate code, because they didn't want even read the old one. Useless comments.
Performance killing functions. Exceptions swallowed without mercy. I have to clean up they poop.
I feel somewhat better, though. The application is still growing and holding the ground after many years and generating at least 800K$ per year in revenues.
Maybe better, but sad. I really wanted to share the project with somebody else but I failed, and I'm left alone....12 -
So recently I started swiping on Tinder again, after some years of staying away from it. Now that's all fine, right?
But there's another dating platform that I used long long ago, Zoosk. I didn't even know that I had an account on it anymore, and they've never reminded me of it either. But guess what got in my mailbox this morning.. 32 singles that you'll definitely like!
Now how does Zoosk know that I'm on dating sites again.. maybe Tinder? 🤔
You know what, Tinder wanketeers? Fuck you. Sharing my personal data like that. Shame on you!!!4 -
Not entirely sure if should be said an IT company but yes I would mention SHAREit.
The well known file sharing software, I remember using it most of the times for file sharing between my Android devices, it previously was only meant for "File Sharing" but now they're just more into ads, video recommendations, news etc etc "useless stuffs".
I mean who the hell in this world would like to open a file sharing app for trending WhatsApp video recommendations? Getting notifications in a language unknown to me? Who has even asked you all for this.
I know ads gives you profit but atleast not the trending movies and all for a file sharing app.
It was good overall in the start but now not they're not working in a way they used to.
PS: image below is a SHAREit notification for someone doing black magic on a kid. See, stupid stuff! not even a news to be read just fake stuff. Atleast show some serious ads or else just rollback to your previous version.7 -
What kind of music do you guys listen too when you're coding? I need recommendations!
I can't do anything with English lyrics (other languages are fine. As long as I don't understand the lyrics, it's not distracting), so I usually stick to instrumental like animals as leaders, polyphia, Chon, etc or German metal: Rammstein, oomph, wbtbwb, etc
Whatcha guys got?24 -
Okay ..assuming that we're one of them: "the idiots" and we're gonna stop sharing things like that , there are like 2B+ monthly active users on Facebook .. don't worry .. we're just gonna do some simple math .
2B x $1000 = $2000B ...
wait .. what ? But ... nvm ..3 -
Hello devRant!!
Just released a small little app to share links to your PC directly from your device (Linker).
It uses a Java server running on your PC so there are no middle-men. Everything is open source and on my GitHub.
It's currently in alpha. Basically:
1. Run server on your PC (no UI ATM so run in a console) - defaults: 0.0.0.0:8090
2. Add the server IP-Port in the Android app
3. Share a link from any app through linker
4. Magic 😎
Below are the links if anyone likes the idea and wants to try it out (UI is crap I know! - I had very little time to work on it)
Become tester:
Sharing your password with your coleagues is like sharing your underwear or your GF with them. It's not right and unless you're into some weird fetish you won't really want them back...
I've been asked to help in my previous project and I'm fairly certain my credentials are expired/locked/forgotten there. Guess whose managers will be encouraging sharing current dev's on that project passwords...2 -
He was working in development of version 1.0 for an application last month, and it was scheduled to be released but when I asked him today how did the roll out went, he said "I am assigned to directly release the v2.0 of this application." -
People keep sharing their Clean Architecture repository. But most of them clearly don't read the book.2
Anyone know private/encrypted p2p network drive app (best would be opensource) between devices in the internet, with multiple user support, invite only ?
It should work behind nat so need use some 3rd party hole punching server for handshakes.
Let’s say I got a movie I want to share with my friend but instead of him downloading it, I would stream it directly from my device and my friend would open it using ex vlc.
Same with other files, on computer can be mounted as network drive.
Or small app with drag drop or cli to add / remove shared directories.
Can be raspberry pi device.
Thinking more, it should work like vpn network but with tunnels between computers.
Can it be done using ipfs ?1 -
My first software boss who didn't like sharing the source code...
Any investors on here? I was looking to start buying stocks but didn't want to pay the ridiculous fees and ran into Robinhood. Dude! They gave me a free share of Zynga just for signing up lol. Only worth $5 but totally awesome. Yes, this is an affiliate link, but I'm not sharing because of that. I'm sharing because it's an amazing service I want you guys to take advantage of. If you use my link, that's just a cherry on top. Check it out!! https://share.robinhood.com/shanes9...3
I feel a bit like shit.
I started a new job about 2 months ago. Company is great, culture is amazing,project is interesting, processes are what i always dreamed.
This is after having learned the job from scratch at a startup that was all you can imagine. Tedious,hoping to be something that was not yet and so on....
So we are coming at the last week of a sprint. Its Tuesday and most stories are competed. We dont have a culture of jumping on others PR, its kind of like this is my PR kind of mentality. This is not established its more like an untold rule. But coming to the end i figured, especially if i knew exactly how to fix the PR that o should jump in a make it happen.
Person who owns those prs unassigned themselves from those and added me instead kind of like: “well take it if you want it....”
What are your rules regarding others prs and sprints?4 -
Am on my way to a Meetup, giving a talk on a database class I've designed - bit different to the norm - hope they like the concept I came up with!
Who has two thumbs and just messaged another dev about the project while they were screen sharing with the client...2
Awsome feeling when you teach some one from non tech background about the tech jargons and they understand..1
It's too late for this but I just realized it so I'm sharing it anyway.
How do I get through tough dev days?
Depending on how tough it is going :
Soundtracks for action (any Assassins here?)
My first time standing up and talking about something for an hour tomorrow. "Knowledge sharing" as if I don't do enough one on one...
Why must you have to do this shit to get promoted? Why can't managers trust that your good at what you do without the public cock sucking?
Back to my introverted rock for a while.5 -
Created this dictionary cli app quite a while ago.
Been using it ever since. Thought of sharing with you guys. Have a look. Let me know what u think :)
I started an e2e encrypted Dropbox clone, meaning file names and contents get encrypted client side prior to uploading. It also has a fairly advanced system for sharing links to files etc. But I got stuck at PDF previews which can't be generated on the server cause the file can't be decrypted there and I never finished it.2
Complete my Clojure POC and do a knowledge sharing session in work on Functional Programming. Also get promoted to Senior Software Engineer.
-
Recent experience:
- Installed openSUSE Tumbleweed
- Installed mariadb
- Tried to start the service (several times) with failure
- Searched online, made adjustments as per the suggestions. No luck
- Reinstalled related packages
- Tried again and failed
- Deleted everything in /var/lib/mysql
- Tried again ... and 👍
Just sharing -
The training courses I am currently writing for work. I just love learning stuff, and sharing that knowledge. It's a lot of work though.
It's actually really strange. I am a real introvert, and hate every human, but I love to stand in front of a dozen people and train them...3 -
Yeah today i'm sharing a little java program who can scan any editable file in your system and count all the alphabet character from it and show the result in a chart renderer in an html document
The manager that believed that sharing code was bad. We had a web and a windows client over the same db. No code shared. He'd rather duplicate the code and maintenance than share it. And the BL should be put in stored procedures, 'cause that's so easy to change in-flight...
I worked for 16 hours straight without any break because client kept me on call with screen sharing on and asked me to solve all the bugs from last 6 months of coding because he wanted to go live next day.🤕
Ps: I was the only developer and the only tester of that project.1 -
CTO: you guys are not sharing the shit
VP: Bikash, share the shit
So its apparently "blackout tuesday", but why am I seeing people sharing a black screen with some hearts on it?
It does say "blackout", right?2 -
Just Sharing !!?!?
One of my friend was working in Android and he used to tell me at that time Cross Platform wouldn't work as native languages are the best.
Now he is working on flutter and he tell me React Native/ Ionic wouldn't work as in next year flutter will be on the top !!?!3 -
The downside of writing reusable, abstracted, DRY code for multiple applications to use: you have to remember to test changes in all the contexts... my org has to hire contractors project by project as we dont have the budget to have more devs than just 1 (me) on permanently. the contractors tho often don't know about all the places our code gets used. And sometimes I even forget - last week in the rush to finish some project, we forgot to think about how a library change made for benefit of a new project a few weeks ago might effect an older (in production) project. Until shit started breaking. Annoying. very annoying. luckily i fixed it (rolled back) before the weekend, but thursday and friday were quite stressful... now tomorrow, a bunch of sleuthing time to figure out exactly what recent change caused it... argh....3
How do you deal with clients that send you a link to implement some shit from Facebook for which you need to log into Facebook?
I don't have access to the company account and I'm not sharing my personal data with Meta, so most of the time I run into a login wall.1 -
Sharing the repo for a POC im working on right now for anyone interested in Clojure. Im building a web app which serves static HTML generated by a custom engine. You can literally write HTML in Clojure. Its still very much a work in progress.
I understand devs find it hard to say "I dont know" because our job is about not knowing then knowing through our own accord, but damn, when you dont know. Let that be known, you may be directed or helped. Both you and the task requester will have a good time. And better expectations set.
Say it with me... "I dont know, but-will-look-into-it"
You might hear something nice like "here are some pointers"3 -
So this week I'm working with special purpose printers (Dymo, Label, Card-printers).
They only connect via USB and there are no linux drivers, so CUPS on a Pi and sharing them won't work '-.-
Guess I'll try that USB over IP thing and see how that goes.3 -
Hey kids, do you want to know what's cool and hip?
Writing scripts to formalize and encode domain specific procedures related to development and sharing it within the entire team is cool!
Readmes with step-by-step guides are highly overrated.4 -
Fucking hell, using Android studio and chrome Dev tools at the same time is a pain. You'd think Google would have their shit sorted when it came to sharing adb with their own programs.
I am going to start a big project (6-10 weeks) in my computer science class and had an idea to create an application that allows the user to share their mouse and keyboard over several computers regardless of OS. I plan to do the project in C++ but have no experience creating applications with C++. Firstly, is this project possible in. NET Core? If not, could you point me to resources or give me some tips that would help me in my project. Thanks.6
So I've worked a bit too hard today, some thing with production being down...
Does anyone have some sort of relax/wind down pattern they don't mind sharing?
My current one is watching youtube the rest of the evening, but I am interested what everyone else does to calm their minds after a long workday4 -
Sharing code between IPTs is fun and definitely reduces risk and level of effort. And if I say it often enough it will become true.
I have two laravel apps. Both sharing one redis db. One has App/Post one has App/Models/Blog/Post. When I unserialize models from redis cache saved by the other app I get issues because it cannot find the right model to hydrate.
The big enterprise in which I work wants to mandate which we have to write a microservice for each individual HTTP endpoint, since we cannot even have an artifactory for code sharing the code duplication is going off the charts and having these microservices sharing a single DB we are creating a big and messy distributed monolith.9
What do you guys think of Flutter and AngularDart, for developing for Android/IOS and web, sharing a common code base?5
Do other ranters / devRanters / members of this community share or publicise their devRant profile or devRant in general on their personal site or blog?
I was thinking of adding something to my site but not sure what to do?7 -
Replace "Check out this devRant" with the first line when sharing.
I have saved a lot of rants but they have the same title and it is hard to see which is which. I suggest to replace that with the first line or first sentence. -
Anyone know of a free screen sharing application for Windows for mirroring my Android device. Vysor is ok but I don't want to pay for anything. Ive tried wireless mirroring but that is slow, so I prefer USB connection. I am looking for a free, no ad, program that is fast.3
Sharing WSDL documents with the outsourced team multiple times through the course of a project leading me to Google mental health services in their location.
What would you ask in a written/online test if you are hiring a mobile app developer, specifically android?
I'll tell you guys what I was asked after I get 10 comments sharing the community's views, so that I don't make a fool of myself.5 -
You know, that small program, Mouse without boarders is so niffty and good. But what makes me trip is how theses screen sharing programs all make the slightest pixel off monitor jump to the next monitor
I hope screen share devs are listening2 -
So dumb that in the name of code review , he spent hours just to understand your code while sharing screen then can only make changes in method and class signature .2 -
As V1.0 I found Allo quite fine. Google assistant is so cool answering a lot of questions that you would rather switch to chrome and browse Google search results etc.. About encryption issues, I'm not a CIA agent and I have no problem if they use my data to improve the app utility. That's what AI and machine learning are all about. And please, don't tell me that Facebook or other services don't store your conversations. What is missing is SMS/MMS support and a Desktop client, that's it.1
so... if someone is learning php, then all of their pages would be php scripts which needs the php engine to execute, aka a complete server set up. therefore no chance of sharing their progress or cool mini projects to the world by setting up a static github page.
Why didn't anyone tell me about that :/1 -
It seems like this is a major topic of debate lately, so I'd like to make the official Torrent vs. Buy rant post.
With torrent hosting sites being pulled down left and right, some say it's for the best of the economy, while others stand for the internet freedom of sharing intellectual property.
How do you stand?9 -
since we have go mod I believe that if you are doing microservices or fracturing a monolith app into microservices for that matter, you rather have a monorepo. I'm finding really useful to do `import ("backend/monolith" "backend/notify")` and such than sharing protobuf files by copying with some Makefile target.
