On December 6th, Microsoft announced that they will dump their own Edge engine and replace it with Chromium, an open-source browser engine developed by Google.
This way they are promising the ~2% of global internet users who prefer Edge over other browsers to experience a better web experience.
The about 2% of market share is one of the reasons Microsoft decided to stop developing their own engine. It's just not worth it.
Joe Belfiore, corporate veep of Windows, said they also want to bring Edge to other platforms, like macOS, to target more audiences.
Web-Developers, like myself, will most likely have the most to gain. Less browsers to target means less incompatibility issues.
There are a lot of HTML5 features that the Edge engine doesn't support...
The new Edge won't be a UWP app, in order to make it usable outside of Windows 10. Instead, it will be build in accordance with the Win32 API, so we can even expect support for older Windows versions, like Windows 7 and 8. A preview release is planned for early 2019.
Because they are switching to Chromium and the Win32 API, Microsoft is hiring new developers! So if you always wanted to work at Microsoft, now is your chance!

I just had to download Firefox to be able to download chrome because Edge kept crashing. Think about that for a second.

Lets have a moment of silence for the devs who created IE and Edge.
I'm sure many who worked on them are great devs and at one point were very proud and inspired by their work but upper management ultimately fucked everything up. The IE guys have since been ridiculed and the Edge devs had to create a peice of software that they knew was destined to be one of the most critically reviewed and ridiculed releases ever.

Console window doesn't log anything before you open it.

I just sent an email to a client about a bug fix with Bootstrap 3 Date/Time Picker, which was not working with Firefox and Safari.
My email was like this "The bug has been fixed and it will work on most browsers except IE and Edge."
He replied "Great!! I don’t like internet explorer anyway…"

FUCK SAFARI!!!!! I am developing our new company website and have a deadline tomorrow. It is built with flexbox WHICH SHOULD WORK EVERYWHERE BY NOW. The new website works FINALLY GREAT in all browsers now and then I just tested it in Safari (which I did not do before) on my mac and SO MANY THInGs doNT WORK! WHATTA FCUK?? 3. Edge insists on setting Edge as default

Visual Studio Code and the Edge browser , so I'm finally trying a new browser and an IDE after years and I can't begin to explain how good of a job M$ has done on these software ... they deserve some applause atleast for now , their browser is pretty darn fast and has a dark theme! The IDE was exactly what I dream of in my sleep (figure of speech) .
Simply amazing , claps to them unless they have some hidden monetization scheme that will come forth over time .9 -

My mom got infected with one of those stupid you have a virus redirect viruses. Malware bytes isn't useful.
To make matters worse it doesn't redirect in Edge, so she's forced to use Edge until further notice.
It's going to be a long week.
Also I don't have much experience with Windows viruses especially these redirect ones, so yay!16 -

Oh FML. The main browser-based tool I use is now only working on MS Edge. IT insists this is the only route to the app. Won’t work on Chrome at all. All my habits have to be uprooted now and I have deal with Edge’s stupid quirks from here to eternity.

I heard good things about Edge recently and thought that I should give it a try for a few days.
I’ve opened the same pdf file in multiple Edge windows and and tabs, each scrolled to a different page.

The middle-mouse button scrolling is broken on half of the windows and tabs. You press the button, you see the scroll mouse curser. But it doesn’t scroll.

Scrolling horizontally to an area which wasn’t visible before, the content there is extremely blurry. Scrolling vertically to different pages doesn’t fix it. Is it the pdf? No. It’s just Edge. Zoom in and out again and the blurriness is fixed for now. Until it comes back later on a random page.

Duplicate another tab and suddenly it crashes all of the tabs and windows of Edge. Now I need to open them all again and scroll to the positions that they were before…
If you think that it was just a one time issue, you are wrong. All of them happened multiple times and after Windows reboots.

Developers are supposed to be eager to try new stuff, however most devs on devRant prefer to hate on Edge and hate who use it.
I'm not here to defend Microsoft but I bet 95% of the people that hate on Edge haven't tried the latest version.
It's really easy on weaker hardware and on battery life. Try using an old ultrabook (2nd gen i5) as I did for some time while using Chrome or Firefox as your main browser!15 -

Browser rant:
I just want to get this off my chest, IE isn't a bad browser. It's highly outdated but it was good back when the alternatives weren't there. And today it's new "browser update" Edge isn't bad either. Edge really is a neat freaking piece of software. Microsoft tries their best to make a browser for their operating system (and a browser engine for their new app format!) that means it has couple of features the alternatives don't (or only with plugins) - oh and plugins, they're coming too. And still it's not slow either. From my own experience (I say this because every user says their browser is the fastest) it's way faster than Quantum. Yet Quantum is still a very good browser because it's faster than the old firefox, I guess it's open source(?) and still a privacy focused browser. Chrome (my personal favorite) on the other hand is really the fastest thing you can get - if you allow it to use all your ram - (if people like linuxxx say firefox is faster for them, I'll just smile) but for everyone worrying about ram usage and "spying", well - you know what I mean. And still I can understand people trying opera or FF/Chrome/Edge mods, I myself love "Monument". Just stop saying a browser is bad because it doesn't have what you like/does have what you don't like. The only bad browser is Midori, okay? 😘
Tl;dr
IE isn't bad but old. Edge isn't bad today. Every high end browser (edge, quantum, chrome) has their perks and none of them is "bad".

I actually found a use for Outlook's scummy default behaviour to open links in Edge and not the default browser.
On my company laptop I mainly use Librewolf because it allows installing plug-ins despite group policy. I only use Edge for Azure DevOps and company portals because MS SSO doesn't work with Librewolf for some reason.
Because Outlook disregards the OS settings and uses Edge by default, MS software forms a sort of bubble, and I can freely set Librewolf as my default browser.9 -

What the hecking heck. My Javascript doesn't work in Edge EXCEPT for when I open - only open - the developer console, then everything works fine. And it is hard to debug stuff without developer tools, especially since Edge doesn't note console.info when the developer console is closed.

I just wanted to take a shallow glance at this browser, and it was horribly awesome in contrary with my expectations.
The design and animations and smooth transitions, ease of migration from chrome and enhanced UI were the things that aroused my interest at the first 5 minutes of usage, as a frontend developer, I'm so much eager to dig up more in it. Share your experience and opinions with me 😉

Getting a new laptop tomorrow, and was planing the process of setting it up.
Steps for new windows computer
1. Delete all included software... all of it.. call an exorcist if needed. Cast out the demons. Seriously, fuck you norton, and fuck you mcafee.
2.Use Edge to download ANY other browser.
3.edit system files to disable Edge, because fuck Edge.
4.install linux subsystem.
5.intall linux software like git, and use git to restore rc files.

Microsoft has put out some really fantastic and educational lectures for free on YouTube. And I understand they have to use Microsoft technology but it makes me cringe when they say things like "Now I'm going to open Microsoft Edge and use Bing." You're working on a projector, we all see you doing it, you don't have to rub salt in the wound.2

Just got a lovely update on Windows 10. It pops up on login and informs me of this great new browser called edge. Then it fucking takes over the screen and gives me one fucking option: "Get Started". I cannot escape, I cannot close the app, I cannot right click the app icon on the toolbar and close this POS. My only option is to fucking ctrl-alt-del and kill this piece of garbage. You also cannot uninstall this shit either. I even found a thread where the MS guy was trying to help them uninstall, but the end result is that you cannot on newer Windows 10. So I have this POS thing that keeps updating flash and other shit periodically that is nothing but a security hole. Now I never want to ever run this garbage.
The irony is this. I have read a lot of good things about Edge. I was considering it as an alternative to Chrome for specific use cases. Now I absolutely no longer want to run this fucktard pos software. This one experience has now tarnished any gains MS has in the browser arena. It is just more overbearing malware being pushed by assholes. Tech these days is defined by assholes. Apple is assholes, Google is bigger assholes, and MS is still the classic assholes.

Given that Microsoft will be dumping Edge down the toilet flush (and creating an Edge skin for Chrome), I will have to switch browsers (if I want to surf the Internet).
I don't want to switch to Firefox, because I find Mozilla having double standards.

That bring us to the Chromium-based browsers. Of the myriad out there, the two that piqued my interest are Opera and Vivaldi.

Then I went to uninstall the new version of Firefox so I could stay with the old. It uninstalled the old version. Now I have a version of Firefox with no uninstall option that won't talk to my old profile. I found options for this, but really? Is firefox becoming a shit hole now? Some people hate microsoft edge so much, even they only use it to download a browser. In fact i do that too. But then i download .pub file and its default application is edge. I guess edge now has a plus value. Since firefox does not support epub natively.

Today, I was thinking, "I haven't tried the new Edge Chromium version for so long. I should give it a try to see what's new have been added". So, I downloaded Edge and opened the EXE and Volla!
It says, You cannot use Microsoft Edge with an older version of Windows 10 (Mine is not that old btw).
I'm like, "F**k you Mircrosoft. You have ruined the OS so many times with your F**king updates. After trying so many things I finally disabled Windows 10's Force updates permanently. I don't wanna lose this freedom. No, Thank you..."
Bye bye microsoft Edge Chromium forever.

I thought my project would break on an edge case and I would have to spend 2-3 hours rewriting some code to fix it. Turns out I had already thought about that edge case when implementing that functionality (which was like 6 months ago), so nothing breaks and I don't have to fix anything. What a pleasant surprise!3

Console dock freezes commonly for MINUTES, literally. It doesn't support objects, so every object is very usefully converted to "[object Object]" string. And now I am discovering that change event on input is magically not firing?
What a day. This would be solved in Chrome or Firefox in a matter of minutes, for a same time Edge doesn't even manage to render a page with dev tools opened FFS...2 -
For web devs here, do we really still need to support browsers of the evil (yeah I'm talking about MS browsers, Edge included) ?
I mean, building a css ui library here in 2017, without the benefits of custom properties, grid and so many other cool things, is so fucking frustrating.
A practical example : color theming with custom properties = Fuck Yeah / color theming without custom properties = so verbose and painfull, sucks.
The library is mostly for private usage at the moment so... I'm about to drop IE and Edge in the deepest shithole of the darkest cavern of my memory, and move on coding my lib with modern CSS, with almost no regret for the ghosts of the past who are still using these shitware today.
Should I ? Or should I... maintain compatibility as we traditionnally do ?
What's you guys opinion about this ? Can we finally kickban these browsers from our lives ?3 -

Today i quit Edge and i'm back on firefox.
Why ? Edge is very good but i like to change my default browser frequently to make my own idea of their quality.
Next step I will probably go to vivaldi or come back to chrome.

Edge cases are the best, some physical IPhone has an issue on the site. Browserstack simulation tells me everything works just splendid.

I felt a bit sorry for MS this morning so logged into dev rant using MS Edge only to see that my notifs are completely missing, don't even render lol. Every time I try something like this I wind up going back to chrome (which I am using now) within minutes. Edge genuinely is a terrible browser, (and I think I'm right in thinking is the most expensive one ever developed). Goes to show you can't compete with wealth!6

Who said MS Edge was dead? Microsoft just announced that they plan to heavily support the Chromium project and "move to a Chromium-compatible web platform for Microsoft Edge on the desktop".

Never in my life I thought I would be ditching chrome for Edge browser,
I am honestly impressed with this new chromium based browser.
Features I liked
- Make PWA for any website
- Immersive Reader
- All extensions of chrome can be installed on edge too
- More customisable
What I didn't like
- It is yet to come on Linux :(7 -
Just installing Node.Js on my windows machine. I try to be loyal and show good faith in MS by using Edge. It fails, hangs or resets every fucking time. What a useless piece of shit browser.

i have this js object containing an array with about 7000 values. firefox, chrome and even ie11 need about 1.5 to 2 seconds to process it.
but edge takes 10 times longer! does anybody know about this behaviour? i could not find anything.
so, serious question. i just find results for ie being slow but THIS time it does its work properly. console shows no errors. is there information about edge-specific issues with javascript?9 -
So we're supposed to test even the most imporbable edge cases to make sure that our software is reliable. But there is a limit. We let a marketing intern go bug hunting. We use the same component in two tabs of our SPA, but we distinguish them through some parameters. The intern found that if you switch back and forth between those two tabs super fast a couple of times, the program for some reason confuses those two tabs and swaps them. Now management has listed it as a priority. When are the customers _ever_ going to do that?!4

My Mac was being worked on this week so I used Edge on my work computer to watch the Apple presentation... not surprisingly Edge crashed when exiting out. I'm not sure if it's just terrible or it was so confused at Sia's performance it just crashed1
