I’ve been tasked with finding an experienced Project Manager for ‘a sensible cost’ - no specific budget amount shared.
That sounds like “we want the best, but want to pay very little” right?
It’s a massive project, they said “you developed this, did all the documentation and research, you can PM it right?”
“Can’t we just start making progress and adapt as we go?” They asked.
Sure I said (thinking Agile), but they said I just need to get on with it and let them know when finished! So no stakeholder interaction... this is not going to end well...2 -
I was asked what are the disadvantages of using RESTful over SOAP, I couldn’t think of any - maybe having to access a legacy system? Any ideas?7

Friend of mine has some C++ he wrote and wants to run it in a web area, so he can demo it and output the results to a webpage. He wants to stick to using the C++ and avoid rewriting it in Python (my suggestion).
Any advice on how he could go about it? I’ve heard about a C compiler that could run in a web area, but not sure if they are any good..?4 -
Ok, this is very naive - but it’s claimed Russia is trying to hack institutes in the west for coronavirus antidote research. My question is, shouldn’t such research be completely ‘open source’ anyway?18

I ran out of milk, so used a five second squirt of ‘cream’ for my coffee this morning. That’s ok right, normal behaviour? All this COVID-isolation isn’t getting to me..? 😆18

Hey fellow devs, got any suggestions for good tech podcasts to follow?
A good mix of broad overview stuff to stay up-to-date with developments and in-depth for those times when I’ve got a bit more time.
Stay well out there! -
Anyone worked with/for a company called pugpig.com? The company I work for might be partnering with them but we don’t know much about their reputation. Their website portfolio looks a bit ‘sparse’ but I’ve heard good things...

Anyone got some good links to introduce Big-O notation? I’m getting my head around it but still feel I’m missing the basics!4

Not a dev post, just wanted to share :) just for your viewing pleasure - My first pics taken using a low budget camera and ‘scope.11

Hi dev buddies, need some help, need some feedback... What’s you’re feelings on Drupal? I’ve never used it but have been asked to look for a CMS for the company I work for. It’s a newspaper company looking to get its first CMS and ‘managed’, templated websites. There’s more expensive CMS options on the market, but feel Drupal might be a good place to start?12
-
Just been casually asked to come up with ways to generate more digital revenue for the company - it’s a newspaper.
As a dev I can map out some solutions and work through most problems, but this is huge! Where do people even start with such a overwhelming challenge???!!!
One things for sure, less bloody display advertising would be my first thought, gotta’ be more innovative!
Any advice?!1 -
...following on from a post below (by @TobyAsE) about meeting up in London - Anyone in Berlin between 8th and 12th October? I’m heading to the IFRA Expo (http://www.ifra-expo.com/home.html) and would be great to see a bit of the city if anyone’s free n’ just want to kick back with a beer!

So, we’ve a small UK based dev team, we follow good practices and get good results. But ‘they’ want to deploy quicker (it was suggested we skip the test phases...) but don’t want to invest in more staff.
So their suggestion is to outsource development to Bangladesh and have us in-house devs work on discovery and innovation.
I’m uncomfortable with this as it feels they are thinking they can get quicker and cheaper dev done abroad (which I hate as it feels disrespectful to my fellow dev brothers n’ sisters).
Also disjointed as in my experience planning and dev’ing work best when you can talk face-to-face.
Thoughts?4 -
Lots of talk about sexual equality in the dev community. Personally I work in a small team, equal mix of male and female. I can honestly say there was no bias towards hiring as I was the one who hired them all, I employed the people I work with because they were the best candidates.
Questions to you all - have you experienced bias in hiring? Have you seen 'positive discrimination' (hired because someone was female - not because they were the best person).
In the U.K. the media is saying there's a huge shortage of females in the sciences, I like to think there's a positive push to get more women into science, but what's the reality? What's you're experiences?61 -

Java Vs. C++
Ok, so I know a bit of Java, still lots to learn but isn't there always! My question to all you poly-linguist programmers is; once you know the basics of OOP are there any obvious hurdles in learning new languages? For instance - do you sometimes accidentally use some Java in C++? Would you all advise to stick to one language and learn it to genius level or does it make you a better programmer to understand a multitude of languages?

So you build a beautiful site; you spend good time on UX, refactoring, server optimisation, getting good page load speeds, SQL all optimised - life is good.
Commercial team comes in and slaps clickbait, generic advertising, tracking scrips over the lot.
Page loads go from a second to 30 seconds and even though you made sure all those crappy ad scripts are asynchronous pages still hang most times. PingdomTools lists your page scripts as going from 40 files to over 900... now users are ringing me up giving me grief about how slow this new company website is...5 -
Any ColdFusion devs in here? I've been plying with it for a while; Nice Java framework, quick to deploy. Feels like it could struggle under high request volumes though..?2

Rare that I stumble across a random sticker I want to put on my laptop so redbubble.com helps. Anyone got other fav sites?

The world needs 'User Error Codes'. At the very least it will give IT Support Techs a smile, nice to spread the love:
16001 - Incompatible User : replace user
16005 - User Deleted Content : laugh at user
16404 - User Not Found : check pub2 -
Confession: I sometimes drop in lines like "not everything should be public, some things should be private" and "good understanding of the relationship is vital" etc. when arguing with the girlfriend. If she ever finds out what I'm doing I'm in serious trouble...
