Use SSDs.
It's not hard. They've been around for a while, small ones are cheap now and are more than enough for at least 90% of developers. The rest can probably afford 2TB NVMe.
Why waste 60$ on a worthless 500GB HDD that will load the OS in the time that's enough for you to make scrambled eggs?
Instead, use 60$ on a 128GB SSD. Sure, it's smaller, but if speed is important for you, you can forget a bit about saving all of the porn you see online, or about installing every free game from Steam.
SSDs are cheap already. And the performance advantage they give is ENORMOUS. You can have a core i9, 64GB of fastest RAM bla bla bla, but if you don't have an SSD, a Celeron with an SSD will seem faster.
Get one, and NEVER again cry about long loading times of IDEs, unless you feel like 30 seconds for the longest load time is too much. If your time is THAT valuable, then you can afford NVMe SSDs in RAID 10 (which can be done easily in software with btrfs if you're on Linux).

Every day I see posts like "Visual Studio is crap because it installs for 6 hours", or "Android studio starts in 30 minutes", or "Visual Studio Code sucks because it loads for too long compared to vim".
It's as if you only have access to budget 10 year old computers.27 -

… Yeah.. defragging. Seems reasonable. Guess I'll just let it finish its defragmentation process. After that it should just be able to shrink the NTFS filesystem and modify the partition table without any issues. After all, I've done this manually in Linux before, and after defragging (to relocate the files on the leftmost sectors of the disk) it finished in no time.

I've finally been able to completely migrate my 4TB Elements to btrfs, copy all the data over (initially did it from my laptop out of laziness, thing overheated, mounted to my server afterwards to copy from there) and now it's mounted to my WanBLowS host again. And I gotta say, it works like a charm! Rsync which previously would mindlessly copy everything over from the server to the (at the time) NTFS drive, now leaves existing files as-is, as it should.
And why is that? Btrfs to btrfs, or a POSIX-compliant filesystem to another POSIX-compliant filesystem rather. Could be ext filesystems, HFS filesystems, or whatever. But not NTFS, because its file attributes aren't POSIX-compatible. That's why rsync chokes on it. And you think that Crapple Thinks Different.. which, granted, they do. But Microshit.. that's a whole different level beast altogether! Every fucking thing they do, every time it's shit and never is it remotely compatible with common standards, and it extends itself even to something rather trivial yet vital to the OS - the NTFS filesystem. Think fucking Different, it isn't an Apple exclusive!2 -
Proxmox team, go fuck yourselves.
Now I'm sure that I'll receive a lot of flack for this, but hear me out.
I've tried Proxmox and was quite pleased with its web UI. But I hate how much it locks me into their own little ecosystem.
I want to use btrfs on my drives. Why is this impossible, yet the hack that is ZoL is your obvious alternative? An alternative wherein I can't even compile and run my own kernel, because then ZoL suddenly fails? And don't you tell me to compile your stock config, when it's well over 15GB large in your source tree.
Proxmox is literally the MacOS of Linux distributions. Which was even more so made clear by me being called an idiot by possibly wanting to run Same on the PVE host. Because why on Earth would sysadmins want to?! Why on Earth would sysadmins be competent for wanting to?!!
You know what? I'll just convert those Proxmox servers to Arch and say fuck you to all the bells and whistles that's Proxmox' web UI. Because at least Arch allows me to make my own fucking choices, limited only by what's supported by the Linux operating system.
Perhaps Proxmox will consider btrfs stable in 2021. Because you know, despite it being stable today in 2018, Debian and Proxmox alike live 3 years in the past, i.e. 2015. I hate the Debian ecosystem because of that, but boy do I hate Proxmox even more so. Bloody fucking piece of shit it is!!! 😡6 -
man i wish i had brain cells.
i was trying to free some storage by deleting some btrfs snapshots, so i mounted the directory and started rm -rfing, as you do. a couple minutes in, i decide to reboot and make sure i didn't accidentally start deleting my root partition.
spoiler alert: i accidentally started deleting my root partition.
it only got up to deleting /data (where i keep my multimedia), but my whole /boot directory is gone. now I'm gonna have to spend a couple hours redoing stuff like fstab and grub to make things work again 😃2 -
Rant on me myself.
After being a professional coder (ie having a bachelor degree) for 11 years now, I finally have a decent and reasonable backup.
I use borg to backup to my raid 1, which is local, in my corridor near the ceiling. I use a Intel NUC with two external USB3 HDDs attatched. As I already had data on them, I went for a btrfs raid 1.
The second level of my backup solution is my brother. It's 50km to his flat. He's got a banana pi with my third HDD attached. I connect to his pi via VPN. The VPN is done via an AVM Fritz! Box. No ads, I just like those boxes (modem and router).
The backup is encrypted, of course.
Now, after ten years, I finally got a decent backup solution. Wow. This feels great! 😎 -
LXC, no doubt.
I mean to be fair, LXC is an amazing container runtime once you manage to set it up. But setting it up is the hard bit. Starting off with LXC 2.x, it was a nightmare to find out how to get things like the storage backends working. But with ZFS it ended up being alright. Find some arcane values to stick in the /etc/lxc/default.conf to use ZFS as the backend and then the default storage location on those ZFS pools (I'll get back to that later), and it worked alright. Again, once it works it's great, but setting it up and finding the right configuration keys is absolute hell.
So, LXC 2.x for a while and a few months ago I finally ended up upgrading to 3.x. Every single configuration key changed. Every single one of them, and that's why I had to 1) learn LXC all over again, and 2) redeploy each and every one of my containers. That process is still not entirely completed. ZFS backend was once again a dive into arcane configuration keys found on forums and whatnot. Yeah.. official documentation has none of it. Oh and in 3.x you now also have to dodge the torrent of "just use LXD m8" messages. Yeah, very helpful when LXD is also the ONLY way to reasonably configure it. Absolutely beautiful. Oh and as far as the ZFS default storage location goes (such as ssd/lxc/ct)? Yeah forget about it. There's no configuration option for it anymore, and the default is "lxc". In ZFS lingo that means that LXC has the audacity to demand a whole pool for itself. No. No you don't deserve a whole pool for yourself. But hey at least you can define the storage location to use in the lxc-create command! Every single time you have to define it in lxc-create. I abstracted it away into my own LXC interface, so no big deal really. But yeah... That could absolutely be better. And in 2.x it was actually better.
Oh and btrfs, the filesystem I'd like to use on low memory systems because ZFS' ARC is too much on such systems? Yeah forget about it. I still have no idea how to do it. Thank you LXC and its amazing documentation!
And if you want the icing on the cake for LXC's terrible documentation, see their repo's index page at https://github.com/lxc/lxc/.... Yeah, it's totally still at 2.x... That's how well they maintain that. Even Debian has 3.x now. And if you look at the branches, you'll find that even 4.x is already available and considered stable. -

and fuck them for not creating some kind of autoprobe fucking utility added to teh initial boot drive which is smart enough to load a stub of grub2 and then pull in teh rest of the slice partitions it shouldn't be using in the first place
and fuck you fedora for using btrfs in the first place and mounting a different partition for linux images and yet another under /boot/efi
and fuck you virtualbox for not producing teh shit the kernel finds IMMEDIATELY once in rescue mode !!!7 -

spent hours trying to fix the hfs+ partition on an old Mac that I'm using as a media server, decided to say fuck it and I'm (hopefully) gonna be booting arch from a btrfs drive soon enough and moving all my stuff there. Feels liberating.

So... I've been thinking, I tend to default to LVM when trying to create easy-to-manage disk partitions, or when I want to backup a database without long lockings during a dump... Though, now... I got thinking.
What do you guys think, which is better in terms of functionality: BtrFS or LVM?
I know BtrFS offers such thing like full snapshots that allow to easily transfer just the increment over the snapshot origin off to a remote server for archival, but I never fully grew to trust btrfs as a server filesystem... Its...
Younger, and not as widespread, not to mention I don't know any performance statistics to recommend its use for this or that case (Like... Would a high-load database engine stutter flushing all those changes on disk while reading / writing temp tables and such)6
