One of those things that put a smile on my face happened today.
I (like many devs) am fond of Linux. So I use Linux on everything.
I'm currently doing an internship abroad in Finland(Linus Torvald's country!) for my college.
So there is this Finnish student who uses Linux. And after a while he asked what I was using so I told him that I'm running linux(arch+i3 like all the cool kids).
So one day he was like; But can you game on Linux?
I was like, yeah sure, might not work as well as Windows but some games run native and some can be emulated through wine. He was like; Hmm maybe I'll try it out.
So he installed Linux mint on his laptop and came to work. I was rather proud (even though he installed the bastard child of Debian and Ubuntu).
So far I've helped him set up streaming games from his pc to Linux and port forwarding.
But then came the big boy. Since I always try to teach him some stuff since they don't teach him a lot at his school.
He asked me if I could help him set up a plex streaming server on Linux.
So we took an old computer and installed Ubuntu Server(Lot's of information for it).
Installed and configured plex server, qtbittorrent-knox and all kind of goodies.
I started showing him how to use ssh, how the rights system works, etc.
It broke my heart a little that he want to be able to teamviewer in it.(since it's running openSSH daemon)
So he installed Ubuntu's desktop ontop of it as well as teamviewer.
It ran slow as hell because the PC has an old crummy core2duo and ddr2 2gb of ram. It chokes when multitasking.
So seeing that as well as telling him everything that can be done with a GUI can be done in CLI.
I saw the lightbulb lighting up. He gets it now. He understand the power of Linux.
That just made me smile all the way home.1 -
Fucked!
I have got my cyber security exam tomorrow morning and i just got a call from a client to make some urgent changes to his site.
To add to it, i already wasted around half an hour becoz GoDaddy Plex somehow decided to block my own IP in the firewall.
And now I am on devRant.
Crap. I am fucked!4 -
Debugging Plex server: streaming a child movie on my phone and tailing the server logs on my flat TV1

I've fucking had it with youtube, fucking jizz slapping knob butlers. I'm going to setup a mirror on my server, the idea is:
- Setup a youtube-dl cron that fetches multiple times a day both audio and video versions of the music playlist I have, hopefully with some sort of progress tracking of each download and total, so I could check if it has run successfully and have a nice dashboard, might need to do that myself (except if compactd proves itself to manage that all)
- Need to figure out a way to download the "best" quality but not go beyond 1080p, since if some videos for some reason are uploaded @ 4k, that'll be a waste of space
- Have Compactd/Funkwhale/Koel as the music player frontend for the audio version of the files, preferably one of them should offer download of the files too, so I could have a similar setup to spotify, though I could probably also just have some filebrowser installed or have a password protected index.
- Not sure what to use for the video versions, since sometimes the video goes with the music; plex? emby? suggestions are welcome
- Saw somebody (ab)using google drive as their backup for all the music they download, so I want to setup something similar, rsyncing all videos and music to some account, so in case shit majorly hits the fan, I can just download everything back15 -
So excited!
Plex just released a spiritual Winamp successor called Plexamp.
Let the music begin!
Grab it here!

I finally quit being a stubborn ass and started using cloud storage. well that's quite a few gigs saved off of photos and docs. now no longer have to remote in to grab files. next month setting up plex2

I help maintain software that services thousands of users across millions of dollars of infrastructure.
My resolve is stronger than steel during a production outage.
Plex goes down for 1 minute at home and my toddler loses it, and I'm a fucking wreck.

Hello devRant!
Man its been a while, i havent logged in here in like 4 years.
Recently ive been getting into home-labbing, and i thought to myself
"all of these people on youtube/reddit run Plex on pre-built NASs that have awful celerons and whatnot, we can do much better!"
And by "much better" i meant a bare metal k8s cluster.
My hybris knows no bounds apparently.
Turns out this shit is quite hard.
Really gives u an appreciation of just how much stuff cloud providers magically abstract away....
My final goal is to run stableDiffusion on this thing, even know i know full-well the moment i try Nvidia will fuck me raw with some hidden enterprise subscrition :) -
Salesforce lightning web components have such bullshit limitations that they claim is because of security but it's just because it's overengineered garbage.
Want to use web components? Nope.
Want to pass in a value to a function in a click listener expression? Nope.
Want to use scss? Nope, compile it to css yourself.
Want to use the fucking document object? Guess what it's overridden except for very specific third party frameworks.
Who in the fuck thought it was a good idea to override the document object? Your app isn't more secure, literally the entire internet uses the document object and it still becomes available in runtime anyway so what the fuck??
LWC is the biggest garbage I've ever seen, you know a framework's a big red flag when there are developers solely for the framework.
There is a new security release coming out that apparently removes some of these nuances (understatement) so there might be some light at the end of the tunnel.4 -
ARPAWOCKY
Twas brillig, and the Protocols
Did USER-SERVER in the wabe.
All mimsey was the FTP,
And the RJE outgrabe,
Beware the ARPANET, my son;
The bits that byte, the heads that scratch;
Beware the NCP, and shun
the frumious system patch,
He took his coding pad in hand;
Long time the Echo-plex he sought.
When his HOST-to-IMP began to limp
he stood a while in thought,
And while he stood, in uffish thought,
The ARPANET, with IMPish bent,
Sent packets through conditioned lines,
And checked them as they went,
One-two, one-two, and through and through
The IMP-to-IMP went ACK and NACK,
When the RFNM came, he said "I'm game",
And sent the answer back,
Then hast thou joined the ARPANET?
Oh come to me, my bankrupt boy!
Quick, call the NIC! Send RFCs!
He chortled in his joy.
Twas brillig, and the Protocols
Did USER-SERVER in the wabe.
All mimsey was the FTP,
And the RJE outgrabe.

Setting up an FTP & Plex server for our house.
>> This was in my infancy of programming and tech, so it made me feel like a complete fucking BADASS. -
I decided to try a new mono font in my editor, this is a relatively new font called IBM Plex.
I can hear the sounds of a 1401 crunching through the punch cards while the printing out curlies that scream THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS.
Mmmmm....I like it.6 -
All of them lol
I'm working on my own streaming service. Yes, I know plex a thing but I've had issues with it and I'm honestly doing this more for the fun of it.
When it's ready, I'll run two versions. One that'll use to access my stuff outside my network, Plex style and one that hosts old movies that are now in the public domain. I'll use that one for demonstrative purposes4 -
Nicest part about working on my home server: being able to just blindly update.
Who cares if that breaks kibana or my plex server? I'm the only one using them.
It can be downright cathartic to just run sudo apt-get upgrade3 -
I told my friend that only my special snowflakes could borrow my Plex server, so he made the account with
<username>TheSpecialSnowflake#1
So my gf made:

I'm looking to buy a domain for my Plex server. Basically, what I want is to be able to watch my movies and TV shows, pictures and other stuff just by visiting my own website. Some of the things I have are not really mine, but I protect that by only allowing myself on the server itself, behind a PIN. Is there any way I can get in trouble after buying a domain?4

Been reading for a while now, finally frustrated enough to add my rant...
Backing up my home server with Veeam to finally ditch raid 5 and add some space. 38% finished when we had to leave for a Thanksgiving dinner. Thought that was perfect because I'd come home to a finished backup, install the new drives and get Plex/webserver back up and running. Nope. Win 10 decides to update and reboot in the middle of my freaking backup at 79% complete. Now, I've just told the friends and family I was with to expect the outage in the next hour or two thinking I was ready. Nope. Start all over again. None of this is truly important, really... But Jesus, that's annoying.
Win 10, you have a special place in hell. And Veeam, as much as I love you, you can be right beside them for not letting me run backup console on Linux.1 -
I got my second system76 machine this week. The, "meerkat" is a rebranded 10th gen Intel NUC, and I got it to replace the ancient corporate refurb I have at a friend's house in Kansas City, on Google Fiber, which I'm running as a plex server. The existing machine was already five years old when I got it used in 2016, and it's lasted far longer than anyone expected, including its manufacturer. I replaced its media storage with an onsite NAS last year, and now it's time for the computer itself to get the Marie Kondo treatment.
I am loving the Meerkat! I have been configuring it here in Denver this week while I have some time off, and when it's all set the way I want I'll get it shipped off to KC. I just tested out plex on it, playing Planet Earth II while the media scanner was running. Didn't even blink. I can't wait to get this thing in place!
Buy more System76!3 -
God I HATE UNRAID! FUCK THIS PIECE OF JUNK
CRASHING EVERY FEW FUCKING HOURS

Oh, its sooo reliable they said, use Unraid they said, the docker support is amazing, they said...
FUCK IT! FUCK THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE!
I JUST WANT TO RUN PLEX AND SONARR ON ONE FUCKING MACHINE, AND UNRAID IS JUST LIKE: yeah, its a good time to crash now, YEET!
and its gone...2 -
Amazon alexa is here for plex.
(You can yell at plex to play something)
But it seems it might need some permissions or something.
Anyone tried sudo <command> yet? -
!dev related (sorry, but have to vent):
Just watched Resident Evil Last Chapter and can't get over the fact that Wesker got killed by a f*cking DOOR like a f*cking b*tch 😠😠3 -
Unraid, you piece of lovely SHIT...
I love that it has this really easy expandable storage pool, and the ease of installing plugins...
Plex runs perfect on it... so does sonarr (mostly)...
but why the loving FUCK did it have to crash every. 4. fucking. days.
oh... wait... im fucking retarded...
the USB stick I use isnt 32gb... its 64...
fuck...
FUCK THIS!
IM FUCKING OUT OF HERE!
Oh, and dont get me started on ZFS...
Please, use RAID instead of ZFS if you have a NAS... dont use ZFS... it wasnt made for this... it was made to run in enterprise enviroments... hell, even THE Enterprise...1 -

As some of you (I'm certain), I have a plex server at home. Hosted with an "old" core i5-4670K, 16GB ram, no GPU. (Ubuntu 20).
My question. HOW, HOW THE FUCK :
I can play HDR and DV videos via plex TV app.
I can play HDR via my S10 fucking phone !
I cannot play nor HDR nor DV since last update on Xbox X... It's the ONLY use I have for that console. If my TV can do better, wtf I'm supposed to do with that console ? (Any way to put plex server on it ?)
My friend can play my 4k HDR video on apple TV via remote connexion..
What's wrong with Xbox X ?
RHAAAAA.
Also, FU all ripers using PGS format for subtitles without SRT option.
Also FU sony for not allowing TrueHD via ARC. (AT least on my A/V reciver)
Also fuck me for buying xbox.
Also fuck the worl just because.
Ok, I feel better. Thanks you all.4 -
My current "file/media server" is a crappy old falling apart windows box with a stupid mismash of internal and external drives with no redundancy. That sucks for a number of reasons, so planning on dropping around a grand or so (including drives) on doing it properly.
Space requirement would be around 20TB-ish of usable space, with 1 disk's worth of redundancy. That can include a newish 5TB drive I have lying around however. Would also run either Plex / Jellyfin, so some horsepower for transcoding would be nice (but no need for more than a single 1080 stream at once.) 24/7 operation, so don't want anything too power hungry.
Current (loose) thinking on the hardware side is an AM4 board and a reasonably low end CPU, 3x8TB WD golds. Software side, probably CentOS, then mergerfs + snapraid. Anyone got any insight as to other options? Hardware not my speciality in particular, so open to suggestions.14 -
So my TV tuner outputs the videos as 1-20GB TS files... To my secondary 1TB HDD...
But that's my main storage drive too. And well I'm recording every week and maybe transcribing some to keep.
Also seems for Plex, need to transcribe to mp4 beforehand.
So now I'm worried about drive failure, seems most DVR drives last around 2-4yrs... depending on use...
Wondering if I need an external USB "throwaway drive" or another internal, not sure whether there's an empty slot, need to check -

ugh I just wasted an hour of my life on `tar`. Unzip, edit file, rezip. Seriously. How hard can that be? And no DSM, "invalid file format" doesn't do crap for helping me debug.
(I know, tar is the butt of a lot of memes around here, but it's legitimately frustrating.) -
I've tried installing plex on a raspberry pi. The good news is that it finds my videos. The bad news is that my entire library is 1080 seasons of "aho girl" and and I never realized it
