Colleague tells me that, in PHP, this is an unsafe selector.
$a = $some_array['foo']['bar'];
And that if ['bar'] has no value, $a will default to $some_array['foo']
Is this right?, because that doesn't seem right to me...9
for the 3rd time ive tried introducing some version control on a project that really needs it because it has multiple people working on it.
And because the last time my efforts got shut down because in practice people thought it was too much of a hassle to develop locally rather than on the shared development server directly, I made a feature that would let people checkout branches on said server...
Apparently the action of; saving > committing > pushing to your feature branch > merge after aproval, is still too much for people to comprehend; "I think this is too convoluted can't we just keep pushing to the production server to check our work and then commit and push to the master branch"
So I just got pissed and said fuck it, no more git then, I'm not even going to put any effort into changing tooling here anymore, and this is a massive project where we have to manually remove code that isnt ready yet from the staging environment.
Are the people I'm working with just this stupid or am I really overengineering this solution because I think 4 people should not be working on the same file at the same time without any form of version control and just direct upload to FTP.
(and yes, I know I should leave this job already, but social anxiety of starting at a new company is a big obstacle for me)3
Lovely, We just got told to ditch Sentry and just check the /var/log/ of the server for issues......
How do I argument back against this...3
OH ITS SO MUCH FUN WHEN YOUR SENIOR GOES LIKE "FIX IT YOURSELF YOU CAUSE THE ISSUE, NOT MY PROBLEM YOU CANT FIGURE IT OUT"2
How is this for competence...
To push new features or fixes on one of our clients production sites that runs on AWS with auto scaling instances, we have to manually change the files in each instance that is running by ftp, and the template in S3.
Can someone, with senior experience in the whole software development process at a large scale company, come talk some sense into our development managers on how you properly run a development company??
The way we do things is wrong in so many ways, but I can't get trough to them, maybe someone with more authority will.
Like im talking about things like, no version control, being totally blindsighted to technical debt, no code review, telling me we shouldnt use 3rd party tools to track issues, tasks, etc.
Are there like intervention companies for this?8
"We're gonna make our own builder that sets up pre configured files.
So we are gonna get rid again of GIT, because with our system you shouldnt be working over each others files if you keep out of other peoples files."
So they basically are saying, we are going back to no version control because you should all keep to the honor system because our system is better.
I'm fucking leaving...
And possibly leaving a poison pill to boot12
How do I deal with this;
Edge case hiccup on production, no errors in the available logs(very shallow logging), no access to the production server, issue unreproducable on staging and a manager that want me to fix it AFTER I already said that im kind of sailing blind and can't do much without logs or access, and already looked at it with another dev who also has no idea what is going on3
Why do people go on lunch break while we are in the middle of hotfixing on a production site?....14
Im thinking about leaving my employer because I keep getting way too much work on my plate, people get annoyed that its not done in time and tell me that i should tell them if im getting too much work.
So i tell them its to much and our deadlines are to tight, then i just get told "this is how we always work, we just gotta finish things faster and better"...
Another one is that our HR/office manager keeps bugging me about setting up SMART goals so i can prove my value to the company and that its my responsibility to do so if i want a pay raise (even if im already underpaid)...
Im sorry but if you wanna keep me, you gotta give me some damn incentive to stay...
Ive been putting up with it sofar because i like the office and the people and the majority of the work itself and i really dont wanna go looking for another job because im really bad at it... but wtf... im so done with all the "how does this work" questions too...
tl;dr: getting negative reviews because im bad at my own evaluation is gonna make me quit probably, while im being praised for all other work i do4
We work with about 7 developers at this company with 80 somewhat websites in production.
We edit changes directly trough FTP and we use ctrl+z as version control...
(yes since i started working here I've been demanding git, I'm spearheading it and we are getting there slowly)4
Our lead frontend dev insists on using <select> as a dropdown for a language switcher in the navbar of a website and then make the page redirect to the localized url using the onChange event with JS.
Am I wrong thinking that's just really, really dumb, or am I just dumb?3
Dev manager: Can you fix this issue?
Me: Yeah, but i cant reproduce it using the explanation given in the ticket. Can i get a step by step guide and a confirmation that the issue is reproducible.
Dev manager: you're the lead dev, you figure it out.
Do you want me to spend an hour not developing things trying to guess? because that is how you make me spend an hour not developing things7
So after school i was kinda roaming around, taking the odd paid programming job for clients, not really making any money, but also quite struggling because I was walking around with undiagnosed ADHD, for about the last 2ish years, not really making any money.
Since this February friends told me I might have ADHD, so I had it checked. Turns out I have been walking around with severe ADHD all my life :P That explained a fuckload... and now I got medication that works, yay!
Flash forward to 3 weeks ago, still not doing any work, all of sudden I get poked on linkedIn "hey we need a developer, wanna work for us?"
I wasnt really looking and since it was a message on linkedIn I figured it was just another of those overpromising recruiters, but it was very close to where I live so I decided to call them directly to check it out, expecting literally nothing, nor was I looking for work.
Roughly a week after that call I got a job as team lead backend developer...
Wait I was a total mess in the last 2 years, how did I end up as lead over an intern and 2 contracted freelancers?!?! HOW DID THAT HAPPEN!?
Sofar I am enjoying it.1
I know how to make software, dont judge my merit on knowing details about specific libraries -.- no matter how popular they are2
one of the many downsides to developing alone, you are basically stuck waiting for an answer on forums/discord/etc..6
I just looove waiting 30 min on average to try an iOS build.
It's so productive to twirl my thumbs for about 1,5 hours a day.
xcode, so fast, much wow...1
dealing with apple as developer is slowly starting to make me violent, the sheer level of incompetence on all layers of that company...4
I dont dare share my github with potential profesional partners, its 40% contributions, 10% my public projects and 50% insulting other libraries in their issues because i become irritated when i cant get it working :P
why is every auth provider utter and complete shit?
why are docs and tutorials that try to teach auth so complete shit?
No wonder there are so many security holes everywhere, nobody bothers to make it simple for the next person.
Next time people that cry about security/bad auth, and work in that field, this one is for you:5
im too tired today for an entire rant...
just Fuck apple and their entire workforce with a 10ft pole
(except the actually useful people, like the janitors and other staf that dont work on their products/support, they do contribute to society)3
wow... the regular react community sucks...
where with react-native 3rd party libraries/components have very clear and detailed docs, the normal react libs out there are like:
20K starred component
"here is a .txt file with some props, TS? yea we use it, but everything is just set to ?: any"
quite the shame :/3
had to cancel my presentation to a client today
apple is taking their sweet time to review my app.. im on week 2 right now...
No new computer for me yet this week...11
I dont get it, why do all those authentication providers want you to use a separate webpage to handle the login, why cant i just have the form and "login with ID provider" buttons on my page.
Why is the user forced to take another step in the flow...
this is UX 101, comon!5
CAN FORUMS THAT REQUIRE YOU TO MAKE AN ACCOUNT TO USE THEIR SEARCH FEATURE FUCK THE HELL OFF ALREADY?!?!7
Starts new codebase
uses boilerplate with the intent to keep a clean structure.
after 2 weeks it already a complete bunch of spaghetti code and doing things like putting the same image in 4 different directories... boy i wonder why i could never hold down a job as employee...2
