Goal for my dev career future?

I'll soon be 53, my career goal is to make it to retirement without fired for some random biz-talk excuse for being too old.

Just don't get too attached to a company. At certain point you'll have to move on.

To have a work laptop with linux.

As my bio says, open/build a farm.

Blackjack. And hookers. You know what, forget the career.

I want to get into a job that I can sustain mentally while I raise a kid.

There are days when reading a book to a toddler after work is too mentally straining. How is it going to be when he wants help with school?

Start my own company that hopefully makes enough money to make me financially independent and lets me live the life I want.

retire. lol

Then I actually have the energy to build the stuff I want to build. and for fun

I’m almost 49, which is now considered “old” by most tech companies if you’re just a lowly staffer. If I can manage to stay employed until I can afford to retire, my goal is to just push through in whatever job in the industry (or even out of it) I can manage to do. Learning and being proficient with zillions of languages and frameworks like all these job postings want is impossible for me. I’m trying to figure out a way to work in some aspect of the commercial spaceflight industry without having to go back to school for an engineering degree and clawing my way up again. If that means being a janitor at SpaceX or Blue Origin, I’m fine with it. I’m done with ladder climbing and ass kissing.

Remote work as a sure thing. WFH 4EVER.

Currently I'm still not confident that most companies will keep or adhere to a remote-first culture because those are full of managers who can't see past their own insecurities.
We will probably see a wave of company failures and bankruptcies (sorry, I should have said "industry consolidation") in a few years while those few that managed to automate away their future-averse middle bosses take over the world.
The day you can't tell if your boss, that you only see in a Zoom window, is organic or a fully virtual #SFW #Professional interactive LinkedIn ad? That is the day I longe for.

Roll into game development, preferably one with not so much crunch.

But i have yet to actually make my own game, the path behind me is filled with unfinished projects.

At least I'm a half decent backend developer.

Short term: Become familiar and independent enough to choose my own machine and software to work with. Right now it's "Here's your MBP, we've already installed the stuff that the rest of us use". If I try and switch to something else and I run into a problem, I'm on my own.

Mid term: Like a lot of you it seems, I'd love to have my own setup. Either have my own company or partner with some friends/family. Whatever lets me do the work I want, build the things I want, and gives me a bit more freedom outside of work. Perhaps a little side-hustle to help with finances.

Long term: I'd love to return to my studies. I don't think I'll ever stop coding, it scratches an itch, a need to make something out of nothing, but I'd love to pursue a career in physics.

I just wanna find a job that I enjoy and that pays decent...

Short term goals are getting promoted at my current job..

never code, never test anything, never even talk to clients. I just wanna open a software company, have Devs, designers, business people who do all the work so that i can get a lot of money

My goal would be to start my own software company - preferably without outside investors.

I don't think I'll be doing it anytime soon, at the moment none of my side projects are ready for public and likely never will.

Currently I'm motivated to start working on a git platform like GitHub or GitLab that improves developer UX and improves common pain points devs have, I would say this one has the most potential but it also requires so much work and time invested.

I also like making games in my spare time, but starting a game studio feels almost impossible to do without outside investors.

- Get into FAANG
- Get into HFT/banks/fintech
- Move to UK/US
