By day, I'm a developer.
At night, I'm a father of two awesome kids and a husband to a fantastic wife.
Stop fucking asking me to work after hours! Just because you sacrifice your life to the office doesn't mean we all do.16 -
Don't get too comfortable.
If your workplace isn't much of a learning environment, it's either time to learn on your own time or leave that workplace.
Don't be arrogant with those who are less tech savy. If your boss/cowoker doesn't understand, at least give them them a chance ☺.
Be kind to new developers who make mistakes; you were in their shoes once.
Realize there's more to life than just designing and implementing software. Don't let other areas of your life suffer just because you're a godly developer.3 -
Life of a web developer:
*Birth*
*Create awesome looking websites*
*Make them look bad on clients request*
*Death*2 -
Friend: what do you do for living?
Me: I am a developer, software engineer.
Friend: Lucky you! you have a comfortable work, always in your desk.
Me inside: *he doesn't have a clue about developers struggling* *dying inside*6 -
Life of a Developer...
Everyone else: HURRY UP!! WE NEED THIS YESTERDAY!! WHATS TAKONG SO F***ING LONG!!
Me: The documentation you have doesn't have all the information which I've repeatedly asked for
Everyone: silence ...5 -
So the head developer at my company quit, and I was chosen to replace him. I haven’t even graduated college yet and am already leading development at a company with over a million active users. Is this real life?14
-
For years I worried I was not a good programmer because of bugs, issues and not giving accurate timescales.
Then I discovered devRant and realised that there’s thousands of us that have the same issues.19 -
boss: Hey! this is your task A. It needs to be done by today.
me: Ok boss
....after sometime when I am halfway through the task....
boss: Hey! here is a task B which needs highest priority.
me: but i am already doing A and I am halfway
boss: No, B is on priority
me: ok
...at the end of the day...
boss: So I hope you have completed task A as I mentioned that was to be done by EOD.
me: ****instant rage****11 -
I remember reading shampoo directions as a kid and it feeling wrong to exit the cycle.
1. wet hair
2. apply shampoo
3. lather
4. repeat
I didn't choose development life, it chose me2 -
Progression in mindset of a developer trough professional life:
1. I'm going to make my code so efficient and beautiful that everyone will envy it!
2. I'm going to make sure I keep separation of concern.
3. I'm going to make my code at least maintainable for other developers.
4. Well shit. At least it works, for now.3 -
I used to think that my life is worthless. Then I saw people on devrant....
turns out being worthless is kind of a developer thing.8 -
I vehemently despise the popular image of developers as borderline autistic savants living on junk food and working 24 hour days!
You see, I bought into that vision and became that person. When I first started working as a developer, I would work crazy long hours, eating junk food while neglecting my health and personal life. This behavior was encouraged by my boss and co-workers, and became expected, with the sales people boasting about it to the clients, like is somehow proved I was a better developer.
It's no big surprise that this kind of life comes at a cost and can not be sustained. I burnt out, my life fell to pieces and my body fucked out on me.
It's taken me years to repair the damage and I am still doing so.
I now work at a company that understands the importance of a healthy work/life balance, and I take full advantage of that.
Perhaps if I had a wise mentor when I first started, I could have worked smarter instead of harder and respected the needs of my mind and body.
I am that mentor now.
Developers are smart people, we should stop glamorising a stupid lifestyle.12 -
Initially:
Me: "I'm becoming a web developer"
Extended Family: "You're going to ruin your life"
2 Years Later:
Me: "I just signed contracts with companies X Y and Z"
Extended Family: "Working without a degree will get you nowhere"
Dad: "he's attending X uni and has a y% scholarship"
Extended Family: *no comments*3 -
Does anyone watch DevWars on Twitch?
It might be the nerdiest thing I've ever watched or let into my life. However, it's really cool and I highly recommend it if you're a web developer12 -
Landed my first grad role as a software developer!

*Moves to another town to start a new job
*Been living in a dorm for the past month
*Starts looking for flats to rent
*Misses a few nice ones because he finds their ads a few hours late
*Starts developing an app that looks for new flat ads that matches his requirements and notifies him of their existence
*Finds a nice flat by accident before he even finish developing the app
*Refuses to rent it only because he believes his app could do better!
Me in a nutshell!4 -
My favorite part of being a developer is that no matter what craziness is going on in my life I can put on my headphones and lose myself in logical problem solving.1

She asked to tell her a joke.
"My life...", said I.
"Error 404, joke not found..." replied she.
She is also a developer.5 -

Are we just programmed to stay awake all night? Even if we have nothing to do?
Like, it's 4 a.m. in my country and I just can't fucking sleep! What is this?!11 -
Anyone else approach coding with the mindset of - "make it work, then make it right".
It really helped me up my productivity9 -
It's nice to make posts/rants in a community that embraces the developer life. Too many normies on my Facebook or other social media platforms, no one understands or can relate to what I post there. Anyways, glad I found devRant.

Works as backend developer for 2 years now; Almost fails simple university algorithm course.
I'm contemplating my whole life and career choice right about now.2 -
The feeling when you type "ls" in Windows CMD and wait for output. But it's say, "ls is not recognized as internal or external command".10

HR : Hiring for a senior flutter developer with 8+ years experience
Flutter release date : May 2017
Thug life4 -
Me : Posts a original developer joke after thinking for 15 long minutes.
Gets 20 ++'s.
Me : Posts random computer science joke stolen from Facebook that everyone would have already seen.
Gets 200++'s.
Fuck this shit.43 -
Just received a job invitation for my first developer position. But I never wrote a line of code in my life. I guess my interviewer too.8
-
So I just received an email from a developer, saying my client hired him to take care of their website from now on. This client counted on me since 2012, so I felt a little... Betrayed. Even though this client was not big and a little difficult.
It's weird. I am trying to transition to something better in my professional life, but I'm not feeling confident of what I'm doing. Sometimes I feel my professional life is ruining. Uncertainty sucks.
Additionally, my desktop decided to stop working today and won't turn on. Oh well.6 -
Life as a developer:
Yesterday I could reproduce the bug everything I ran the program, but I could not debug it. Visual Studio would not break at my breakpoints.
Today Visual Studio works fine but the bug cannot be reproduced at all.
I should have become a florist instead...4 -
Life is like code,
Your loved ones are your IDE,
You can be good with code without an IDE,
but it makes things much more smoother when you have one :D
Life quote :) -
Long long ago, I had a dream to start a startup.
Till today I'm not able to find an idea.
Then, I realized ideas cannot be forced. They come when they come.6 -

Life of a developer. Wake up in the middle of the night on a weekend and have the solution for the problem at work.3
-
That feeling when a bug has been bugging me for 3 days, I find that little information in API source code and using that I make a fix.
Developer life is so worth it :) -
Ask a developer to code entire night
Developer:
😏🤓No Problem. I was born to play with fire 😤😎
Ask a developer to complete the associated documentation in next couple of hours
Developer:
😳🤬🤯 Better call the devil to take me to hell 😱🤒🥵6 -
Started off a developer 6 months back. I seem to have lost control of my life. I wake up at 8, be at work at 9am, get back home by 7 or 8pm, dinner, learn, work on my platform, sleep at 12am or 1am and the cycle continues.
I have no time for taking care of myself, no working out, no grooming, no family time, no time with friends, nothing naada! It scares me that I don't have that balance.
I always feel like I'm not good enough and I'm curious by nature, because of these, I sit my ass down and work / learn like crazy because I want to be good but I fear for my health, I'm 22, so I can live for now like this but this lifestyle will ruin my future, I've started getting back problems and shit, that was the wake up call!
How do you guys do it? work - life balance? I believe this information is vital for everyone starting out as a developer.5 -
The life of a dyslexic developer is hard sometimes. Today really got me though when I was reading some developer docs and an example said:
.title = "testtitle"
For the next two minutes I was very puzzled and confused because I read it as "testicle"1 -
WTF !!! It's been two years since I choose my life as a developer and they are expecting me to have an experience of 5 years. It's like one of those posts :) LOL5

You are a lifeless developer when you are working on the same goddamn laptop even on a weekend.
Should get a life :P3 -
When people think you're addicted to gaming, but you're just really keen on developing that next feature. People just don't understand the underappreciated life of an add-on developer. We're shit on by the game developer, and users alike.2

For every developer, who lives a nocturnal life.. the toughest job is baby sitting for a week..
At least for me.. Already missing the 3 AM idea cracks and coding..
Waking up at 6am is not my cup of tea and getting the kids ready for school.. I would rather prefer to work all night...
Another 3 days to go...10 -
A technology focussed recruitment consultant took great pride in recalling the first time he met a "real life developer". He was wearing a suit. Developer was wearing a Slipknot t-shirt. It was a defining moment for him.
Think he released a little man jelly in excitement.1 -
Self printed stickers (I know, they look kinda horrible) + devRant sticker, my Thinkpad needs maintenance4

If you're ever feeling unskilled at development, just remember:
One of the most famous questions on Stack Overflow is "how to exit vim?"
Jk, Vim's a bitch.2 -
Fun fact: I got my first job on starting of week 77 as a developer. Coincidence! I hope not.
Even devrant syncs with my life now.1 -
From a life of a junior developer...
Got assigned one task for a 2 week sprint. 'Finished' it in 3 day, not actually sure it's finished as all the other devs are too busy to look at the pull request. So here I am... Ranting away and being bored1 -
If you keep seeing your watch, while ignoring your laptop time display, then it's time for you to logout of office.

Advice from my father : "Don't become a developer son"

Oh wait.. We supposed to write a bad advice??!3 -
Unscheduled meetings are the worst.
You preparing whole day to leave early for the day, then manager suddenly puts up an unscheduled meeting. Oh great isn't it!!1 -
Bought cup noodle to save time and hassle. Forgot to turn on the electric kettle. Pour the water into cup without checking temperature. In the end, have to cook with the pot anyway. What the **** am I doing?5

My best career choice: After 5 longass years, left a multinational consulting firm that constantly reminded me of my insignificance. Joined a small company to work on their flagship app. Learning sooo much.
Worst: NOT LEAVING THE CODE MONKEY SWEATSHOP SOON ENOUGH. ENDURING PAIN != WORKING HARD. THERE'S A PROBLEM WHEN SENIOR DEVS IN YOUR COMPANY ONLY UNDERSTAND PROCEDURAL PROGRAMMING. MANAGERS ONLY CARED ABOUT HOW MANY HOURS DEVS LOGGED WHICH TREATED A COGNITIVE INTENSIVE TASK AS MANUAL LABOR.2 -
How important is a degree to get a decent career in IT? Also must you be certified in all the languages?18

An hour of developer time: $50
An HDMI to USB-C dongle: $30

There are some things in life that don't make you homicidal for everything else there's management.3 -
I have an interface implemented by 11 classes, coz u kno, it's "SOLID". But today i felt my life is a lie when a developer refactored my code and deleted all those classes and placed them in a Utils class with static methods, and slapped me with "Let's make it simple".14

Anyone here a graphic designer / web developer that got an early look on your life by commanding a turtle to draw pictures for you?

Both Conservancy and the Git project are aware that the initial branch name, ‘master’, is offensive to some people and we empathize with those hurt by the use of that term.
Offensive my butt. It's not like any developer alive today had experienced the life of a slave. It's all in the past. Should I get offended by imperial Japanese flag?15 -
Always keep trying, never give up on the bugs you have.even if you have to start over again.
Someone once asked me:
Why do we fall?
I answered him:
To rise up again even stronger.4 -
My colleague just made a very subtle rant in real life:
"I wish we could become more software developer and be less software producer"3 -
I'm starting to have suicidal thoughts though the Javascript and the whole frontend.
Is anyone looking for a Ruby Developer with 2 years of experience with Ruby, 2 years with pure SQL databases and half year with React?
I don't want to see only Javascript for 8 hours per day for the rest of my life.9 -

It is about 2 years since I started coding and there's a perfect movie quote that describes my life change.
"I was blind, but now I see."
I'm so happy that my life went this way and I'm proud to be developer.2 -
My first post of 2019.
One month to Valentine's Day, Last year's was spent with beer, the pervious with her. This year I want to spend with her and beer.
I somehow feel I will get neither.3 -

Real story :
There's this one colleague, who was a very good friend of mine. Always helped me in everything. That one friend in the team, who shares a lot of stuff with you.
And she suddenly, turns offensive when it comes to professional things and mainly competitive stuff in the team.
She becomes a completely different person when I get recognition for something in the team or when I become popular in the team.
She has that feeling that she should always stay in the lime light.
When I steal the show by doing something good, she starts to show faces.
Decided that it is a unhealthy friendship, as the friend i knew is no longer a friend when it comes into professional behavior at work,
And it started reflecting a lot in our personal friendship, outside work too.
Decided to cut the friendship and only be colleagues.
Did the same happen to someone else? Did you lose a friend because of things like this?4 -
Boss yelled at lead mobile dev for low productivity because the project manager present him wrong timetables and added accidentally one more week of work.
Next day boss yelled at the lead mobile dev cause the back end wasnt working well.
Project manager and lead back end developer enjoy life! Front is hell :P5 -
Someone recently told me that learning command line is pointless for a developer today, the world has moved towards GUIs for a reason and there is no point in making your dev life harder.
Opinions?25 -
Shout out to all the Indian Devs who are stuck in their corporate jobs, AC and drinking water are the only two things that are free in office, always dreaming of getting a job in Silicon Valley which unfortunately seems almost impossible, and lastly as they silently suffer at hands of their managers who know nothing more than entering numbers in an excel sheet.7

I got a degree in music performance. But at the end of it, I decided that I enjoyed the finer things in life, like having a house and, you know, food.
So I struggled through some entry level jobs until folks noticed I had potential, and a kindly manager paired me with our database developer. The rest is history!1 -
My life as a web developer changed forever when I realized that 80% of my layout problems can be solved by adding "display: flex;" to literally everything in sight.1

Kay! Why people think remote job is less then a onsite job? Excuse me? I also work remotely. Okay I get it that onsite you have to go onsite through bus or blah blah , but your hours are not counting by a tracker and not getting SS every 2 min. My family doesn't understand that I have to be on my laptop for at least 7-8 hours.
Their reaction is :" why the food is not ready?"
" I am doing work"
"So what? You are home!"

Life as a software developer is a bit similar to a nurse... they often both patch bleeding holes as a service ;-)1

Honestly... I'm my own biggest influence. I had a career shift from law enforcement to developer. I hated my job, my life, where I was at and where I was going. I never want to be in that position again so I got myself to a point where I have more freedom and opportunities.

I thought I was never going to be anything in life because there was nothing that I was good at. Then I started "web school" and it just clicked. I was good at it and I understood it. Finished with an A :) now I love my job as a front-end developer.1
-
10 years ago I was learning how to program in college,
Now working in IT company I stare at Excel Sheets and scratch my head.
#10yearschallenge -
Just got into a company as a fresher. Have never liked doing frontend (no offence). They are making me do frontend. Now, I'll forever bear the tag of a frontend developer. Can't quit due to money issues. Don't know where life will take me.4
-
As I sit and stare at code, and then stare at the Bills I need to pay as the month starts. I began to think, what if I too was part something new in Tech. Everytime, I see people creating new Tech, getting noticed, I wish I was there on forefront.
Then it gradually dawns on me, "you are just here to make ends meet, survive in the corporate world. Why care about the world. Let it go as it is."
"A shitty life".3 -
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucking Friday bug.
Fuck.
Shitty bug just hit fan.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaa !!!!!!!??!!??!?!!!!!!!!4 -
I coded part of feature 2 months ago.
Left it to help frontend guy a bit, deal with fire after release. ( we’re missing frontend integration tests and every release is pain in the ass ).
My backend code coverage is about 80% so not much can go wrong at this point.
So I added more code today and it looks like new feature is working but don’t know what the code I added 2 months ago exactly do.
The only thing I know is that it definitely needs refactoring ...
Being only backend dev / release manager / administrator/ dev ops in project is painful I need to deal with everything on my own 😔
At least client doesn’t care if it’s done in one week or in one month right now.1 -
it's 1:30am and i'm working and i feel more productive and peaceful working this way (when there's no one and i can concentrate better). this is the developer life? i love it!4

Started my first job as an associate software developer. It feels great.
At this moment life is perfect. -
! rant
So i started my first job on thursday and even though I interviewed for a c# developer position, I'm now a Projectlead Junior. I'm not even mad. It's surprising where life takes you.2 -
If you want to set off and go develop some grand new thing, you don’t need millions of dollars of capitalization. You need enough pizza and Diet Coke to stick in your refrigerator, a cheap PC to work on and the dedication to go through with it. ~John Carmack3
-
> TheSmartGuy: listen, IHateForALiving, I know you're a frontend developer, but here in the backend...
Just so we're clear: I'm NOT a frontend developer.
I'm a full stack developer.
I just so happen to always end up working on the frontend because you bunch of handless monkeys wouldn't be able to write a webpack config file if your life depended on it.
It's not you taking care of my inability to work on the backend, it's me being relegated to using only half of my skills because you ugly things refuse to evolve. I could take your job in a breath, I wouldn't trust you with writing a css selector.7 -
Have you ever wondered why programmers have so many strong communities like devRant, StackOverflow, Reddit ect. and no other professions has such communities?
Becoz we haven't built one for them.
😐🤝9 -
Don't like the way how to do something? Witte software for it! You need something automated? Develop the autonation algorithms! Don't like how an open source application works? Change it! Don't like how the closed source application works? Fucking reverse engineer and patch it!
Being a developer opens incredibly man doors in the world of information technology, that technology that drives our world, society and so, so many parts of everyone's life. So why on earth wouldn't you want to be a developer?2 -
As a developer you have to learn!
Your whole fucking work life!
I totally give you credits for being a good programmer in 1990, but you have learnt NOTHING in the last fucking 30 years.
If you don't know anything about MVC....
and nothing about object oriented programming,
and nothing about all the new cool features,
SHUT THE FUCK UP!5 -
Creating something out of nothing and knowing there's people from all over the world using my creation. One last thing is the developer community is so rich in diversity, walks of life, experience...it's truly awesome to get to know so many people who all program.

I wonder what the average lifespan is of a developer.
Is it higher or lower then the average life expectancy?
Does it have to do with our mindset? Or are our clients so terrible that we have more stress? If so does devRant lower our stress?4 -
I couldn't easily find it again and I didn't screenshot it yesterday. But this is not made up.
Yesterday I found a Sponsored post on Facebook about a class for one of WordPress premium theme with visual builder. Well it's more like a workshop rather than a class.
The description said if you want to have stable income, want to work from home, want to experience a *real developer life*, etc etc.
REAL DEVELOPER LIFE. No kidding.
I do WordPress websites. Yes I use premium themes. Yes I do visual builder. Fuck but I don't call that work real dev work and I'm not proud of those projects as real dev works.
In the end, the hungrier guy gets the bread. I guess. I haven't thought of providing such courses at all.
PS : the mentioned theme is Divi from Elegantthemes. -

The real life of me as a trainee developer:

I am a web app developer by profession and software engineer by qualifications but when there is a problem with router, firewall or a server needs to be setup, whether internal or for client, all my employer can see is me. I'm on the way to building my own B2B SAAS business. I code all day, sleep for 3 hours, have no money, and sometimes do a couple of freelancing projects to survive.
My friends are in jobs, earning way more than me. I feel a bit jealous, doubting my abilities.
Am I doing right? Or I'm just a nerd with a potato computer struggling like a dog? Am I even walking on the correct path?6 -
Sometimes I think that life is too short to learn everything I need to become an actually good web developer. :(

Just got myself a Pixelbook and man is this thing a sweet little machine! Excellent battery life, a pretty decent backlit keyboard and I can work on my personal project using VSCode and the integrated debugger!

After I was woken up in the morning by my friend that had a meeting nearby.
We went for coffee and as part of usual Wednesday I also decided to go to cinema to see Dr Dollitle ( not verry funny ).
I felt relaxed as everyone fucked off from me since Monday.
I was so happy of doing nothing after the movie I decided to try to make both frontend and backend for new application screens in finite time.
I could have waited for frontend developer to be back from his vacation but since I can also do it I decided to do it myself.
I did frontend part first with mock data and after finishing it before 2 pm asked if client will have time to discuss it. He didn’t so we decided I try to add real data and publish it on test environment.
Well those are mock up screens anyway so I decided to eat and smoke to chill but also try to work anyway.
I just finished backend for those screens and switched test environment to new branch.
Looks like they’re working for biggest client customers.
Usually it takes about a week or two to describe frontend developer what client wants but let’s see if I still have some frontend UX empathy left and can speed up development by couple of days. -
When another "front-end developer" appends the entire bootstrap CSS file to your templates because it needs to align two elements. To templates that never included any css framework cuz i hate them... Then he asked me for help because it did not work... I fixed an invalid CSS file reference.

After reading this post, I am so confused what to with this life. I thought of becoming a full stack developer. After reading it, I am thinking, is this I want to do with my life. How many libraries, frameworks, technologies and languages should I learn.
Getting confused what to do now. Grrrr...2 -
One thing that i found in common among most of rants was devs getting annoyed by people who interrupt them while coding, obviously it's because we love what we do while in most jobs they wish for someone interrupting them so they can stop working for a while

We're trying to use Oracle databases in Visual Studio. They won't install the Oracle developer tools on my system. Life has lost all meaning. I'm floating in an endless void where the only sensations are confusion and the vague sense that someone is stepping on my stomach4

I don't believe, that I could ever be hired as a software developer... I want to die. I want to die as soon as possible... Fuck this all! Fuck this shitty fucking Life!!!6

I'm suppose to be a back end developer, yet I still seem to be doing front end all the time. Customer tweaks and requests are the bane of my front end life.

Life of an Oracle Developer ... Day {I've lost bloody count now}
Task: Optimise a 236 line cursor consisting of 7 SQL SELECTS and unions, 39 joins and nested sub queries galore.

I love our scm. It's such a great piece of technology. It really aides me as a developer. It really makes my life easier. It isn't missing any features. It's worth the money it costs.
All of that is a lie. -
Focus on your strengths and not your weaknesses. Oh and wear one of those Polo Pullovers, that way you'll say "Hire me, because I'm that cool kinda sexy but douchey as fuck developer you guys need in your life". That should get the job done or job gotten.
-
Just those days when there's no work and then there's a flood of work. And all high priority. Can't understand how the fuck they always end up like this.

Debugging is a must have skill for every developer. I used to consider debugging to be a pain. But when I did it for fun it made debugging a bit easier to me.
Take debugging as a challenge and enjoy doing it, it will make your life a lot easier1 -
Advices looking for a job in Canada as a foreign?
I've been a software developer for 4 years now. I started in small company in Rome as jr developer where I'm now the CTO... I now feel stuck in this job cause the company makes a lot of money from the core product and there is no room for innovation.
I was looking for a drastic change in my life and career and Canada seems a good place to me.
So, any advices?9 -
Hi Flutter developer i just finished the development of a huge package that will change your life forever.

So today was a normal day at the office. My brain stopped functioning after helplessly trying to debug ES6 code for IE 11. So I put my headphones on and went to the loo. (Mind you my headphones have a heavy bass, so they are quite larger than other traditional headphones.)
As I was coming back to my desk, my project manager laughed, pointing to my headphones, and said, "What are these?"
"Headphones!", I said, silently judging him.
He said, "Can't you even put those down for two minutes? You wear them even in the loo!"
Baffled by his utmost stupid sentence, I did the most obvious thing, ignore him.
After about 10 minutes, the manager came to my desk and said, "See, when you walk around with these headphones, people get 'distracted' and are unable to work. So I'd suggest you wear them while still on your seat and remove them when you have to leave the seat. Even the clients might think of you as a weird guy. Okay?"
And I couldn't do anything. I just sat there, nodded and went back to work.6 -

Today at work I started doing 1 month old task with production problem.
First of all why now ?
Because I already fixed all the other urgent production problems I had during last month, done about 4 deployments of those super urgent errors.
Now I can start with not trivial one that are pending for quite time.
I am the only backend developer in this project ...
This is a dtp application and the problem is that we are not verifying if we got all fonts embedded in customer provided pdf files.
We are generating high quality images of those pdf for printing just fine from the beginning but now we need valid PDF with all fonts embedded in it. ( don’t ask me why I am only a hammer in this process )
After running simple test using python script against database it turned out we have over 500 broken PDF files without fonts.
So I guess I have just one sentence to say about it.
Fuck you PDF format for not being strict and allowing this shit. -
I love the job hunt, just thinking about ending my life everyday now. Maybe I'm just a bad programmer - or just completely dumb.
Anyone have any advice on getting front end developer jobs?4 -
Doing projects on your own from idea to base prototype you can give to users without chance of success is more like fighting with your own then development.
I rewrote application third time and I think (again) that I am on good track to finish this shit. Backend is 50% done. Started doing frontend in react now so wish me luck. -

At this point of my side project I wanted to check out openresty for dynamic proxy creation in nginx.
Happy to check it out I installed centos 7 as guest using new command I just learned virt-builder that would automate vm creation.
Spend 10 hours debugging why I can ping and ssh but cannot get to application port from any network.
Checked iptables, restarted network, reinstalled vm again 3 times with different methods.
Scrolled trough whole internet and it’s mostly outdated problems.
Learned bunch of new commands without new results.
Results were always the same:
No route to host.
Turned out firewalld is fucking thing now.
systemctl firewalld stop helped
Now I know that systemd would kill me at some point for sure.
What I can add at this point ?
Please add more distros, differences, standards and programming languages so world definitely would be better place.
I need a short break now to actually start making shit that I wanted to start at 4-5pm on Saturday.
It’s Sunday 3:30am and time for breakfast.
At least I am happy it started working.2 -
Risk is part of my everyday life.
I take the risk everyday when opening IDE and changing line of code that can either break database or crash other systems that are depending on one I am developing. ( not instantly but in some time in the future )
So....
Many years ago I was updating some application server production code while being drunk.
Everything went fine except me waking up in the morning and didn’t remember how I did it.
... what I learned from my developers life except that heavy drinking and updating servers is not the best idea ?
First, don’t give a fuck, do your job and ask questions even if the person in front of you said that understood everything and you think you understood all of shit.
Second, if you think you know what to do think twice.
Third, having any backup, any tests and any documentation is always better then having nothing.
And the most important.
The most risky in every business are people around you, so always have good people around and there would be no risk at all or you won’t even think about it.
✌🏽 ❤️ -
Of course I'd like to develop something I actually care about and make money out of it, but since I'm still in uni my short term vision is finding a job as a developer. Gotta bring that bread on the table, and maybe start having a life (not necessarily a social one).

Life is funny, I spend years ranting about WordPress and Mac computers, while being a full stack developer, then I got the opportunity to study music abroad, two months into the semester I get offered a scholarship to work with a Mac managing WordPress sites.
Isn't life funny? -
What a fucking day.
Half a day looking for functionality on github that was lost in some branch and not merged to master. All remotes was pruned. Finally restored it from some remote on production and merged to master before Saturday release. Yeah !!!!
Month saved fuckers, pick some more hardcore shit to surprise me. To strong to fail. -
Yesterday I was struggling with a chunk of code with 4 foreaches that form a 4x nested array based on different conditions that was written not by mex and today i decided to find and replace the variables as a single item to compare to the result that it spits out. So much easier to understand! Yesterday I was questioning life

I am a junior developer, two weeks ago I got a job for the first time in my life as a fullstack web developer, I have felt bad for the times that "I should have read the code better before coding", I think I am distracted and impatient. I make mistakes because I don't know how the system works in some parts and I write repeated or unnecessary code, my boss has corrected me, but I feel very stupid and I'm afraid of being fired. Is it normal to feel like this?2
-
Not a productive day. I wanted to restore part of database from test server but downloading data using reat api was getting timeouts.
I made simple app that dumps data and I launched process in screen and started watching Dragon ball
I like those old first series with young Songo looking for his grandpa.
After about 2 hours and partial backup still not finished I started to cut crap data from backup script will finish it tomorrow.
Looks like my ux is still ok and views got almost all approved.
Need to fix some shit on backend but I need those backups to work for more complicated customers.
Luckily frontend developer is back so he will handle visual parts.
Maybe we will release new features on the beginning of February.3 -
Second day/night with language server protocol and after “I hate my life phase” I think I am starting to understand this shit ( read found enough libraries and examples that are written in some kind of understandable manner to my little brain).
Fucking learning process and no prior knowledge of typescript doesn’t help.
Time to write some simple language server prototype. -
Monday morning.
That uneasy feeling on your stomach when you feel upset about Monday morning.
Is there a word to explain this?5 -

This is my keyboard. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My keyboard is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my keyboard is useless. Without my keyboard, I am useless.
I can't believe how long I've had this one keyboard. I started my software developer career with it (went to my first coding interview with it), bought it before I had even had sex... Best investment of my life so far :D16 -
"A day in the life of a mobile app developer"
No back-end validation or back-end string sanitisation.
All in the front-end. -
How do you handle it as a developer with people coming to you to tell you they have this big dream app and they want you to work on it. They have no money, No plan, just an idea and they want you to stop your life and get into it.2

For the game devs out there … Is following a game developer career a good idea ? We always hear about crunch and no work life balance. Im thinking about changing my job( currently a dev at a fintech company) for a while and need some insights from you guys :)6

- How is your day going?

Now due to march ending is around the corner, manager will frustrate and put employee on the edge of chair and doing shitty work just because illiteracy of boss. Literally hated this part of work.

How is the quality of life for the average web developer?
I've been doing a bit of research and it seems quite common for people in the field to have no life outside of work. This is not what I want. I work/study 7 days a week and I would ideally like to work for a web dev company, not freelance.
Is it naive to think that a standard 9-5 is realistic for me when I graduate?8 -
Fellow devsmen who are parents, how do you manage to keep yourself sharp in your craft while managing your family life?4

I have a question about the life as a developer in a big, open office. I'm a relatively active thinker and have to walk around, draw on whiteboards, etc. to get a better outlook on my problem.
What do I do in a big office with mutliple people? I can't just stand up and walk around or write/draw on a whiteboard all the time.
Has anyone experienced the same and knows what to do? I'd like to prepare for a life in the office.2 -
I feel blessed that I am a software developer, best perks, good work life balance, don't have to be physically in the office to contribute. Life is good

Making distributed scheduler that queue and run tasks on containers or other executors in future and also pulls new tasks from defined git repositories.
Tasks are added based on simple yaml configuration.
Need that for my side projects that gather data from multiple sources from time to time.
k8s looks to heavy for that and airflow can’t be configured like I want it to be so I started writing my own on Monday.
Nearly finished poc version.2 -
Broke my leg in 4 places on Friday and the biggest thing stressing me out is not being in work. What’s going to happen with all my project deadlines2

I haven't written serious code in 3 months. By serious I mean I haven't thought a lot about a problem or developed something difficult to develop.
Also I have avoided coding whenever I could.
I did that after a friends' advice as they saw me burned out for real and quite sad at the time.
Honestly, I feel much better emotionally and my overall mood has much less tension. Gonna start coding for real soon after getting that out of my system. -
That day, a true developer was born, and with him came to the earth, his true companion. And he promised the dev , that they can only be parted by your death.
And the true companion was none other than the - BUGS!!!!😉
He also added that i have no death and i will never leave you in solitude😋😉. -
I love to sleep a lot and can't stay up too late.
I love cooking meals that take a long time to make.
I love video games, books, TV shows and exercising at the gym.
But I also love software development, and I fear I can't enjoy both worlds.
All of my freelance developer friends always stay up late and never have time for anything. In one hand I'm very jealous of their programming skills and wish I had these too. But I fear I will lose my life to it.
Can I still be a developer and have a life?2 -
Would you like to share your story here about how has your life been as a self-taught full stack developer?
PS: You may answer it yourself or taking in reference of a friend. Doesn't matter.10 -
Why would someone not choose PHP as a backend language, as making dynamic website in PHP is more easy than in other language.5
-
Person from a company I am contractor for tried to fuck me up and put me to the project with high money penalties without my will and behind my back.
I don’t understand those people.
You run a project do everything for them except delivering invoice to client and they try to fuck you anyway behind your or their client back.
You literally fight with people to give them money.
This all happened after me keeping their client project for almost 4 years.
Bell rings again to leave them this year after end of contract and don’t look back but I’m sad I need to leave nice client and application I was making for 4 years straight. I am oldest person in project probably only one that understands business behind it from ground up.
There was big rotation in project and knowing the company they will put some junior on my place that will break everything.
Well I still have some time to think ( maybe even couple of months) about what to do next besides taking some time off during this summer.
I am afraid that I rejected so many interesting offers during those 4 years nobody wants me and I got rusty with my stack I am no longer competitive.
I was unable to make anything during weekend and on Monday again cause of this shit.
Fucking people.4 -
Do you make notes for the stuff you learn as a developer,
feel fee to discuss how you do it, like do you write a detailed blog post or write in your notebook6 -
In the morning to afternoon i do coding, debugging and sometimes deploying. In the night i just already start to play PUBG. I dont know why i am interested to play this game at the time.
But what i’ve learned while playing it is like looting the weapon and amno, find the easiest enemiest first (bot is still existed in the real game) , make some rotation, call the teammate if i am being knockdown and unluckly we landed then dead without weapon (too-soon) and fight for getting Winner Winner Chicken Dinner !!
Its like what i am doing every single day tobe better as developer, find some literature or articel, try to solve an easiest task, deploy it and boom its getting error and suddenly need to hotfix after it’s work with return 200 expected and no error logs on my APM😅
If you guys play too, share me your pubg id on the comment below.
Lets make some fun party ✌️👍 -
having the mind of a developer makes every part of life better - from drying off after showers to buttering toast.

Do full stack developers learn or push new skills.
Badum tss..
Why am I wasting my life being a full stack developer, right?6 -
Every developer should go to Silicon Valley at least once in their lifetime, it should be enough to change his/her life forever...

Code Review is one fucking awesome stunt.

TBH, lot of learning insights during the review. -
Hi Guys! Currently I'm learning backend web development on freecodecamp.com. Before this I've learned python, just for fun, but I 'painfully' enjoy both. I'm working on an other field now (cnc machining), but I tought I could become a developer. Now I've lost my confindent because a few article on Quora. There a guy (and not only he) said, technicly it'll take over my life. Unbelievable amount of extra time exclude working hours, stress and 18 hours working days. My long plan was to be an independent freelancer, with an easy working schedule (I don't want to be rich, jus have a food valanced life). I've been hoped in a fairy tale? It'll drain my life?4

Perfect job would be work life balance.
Colleagues are helpful.
The existing project are having clean architecture and code structure that won’t confuse developer at all. -
How do I overcome the fear of failure as a developer? I know that failures are a daily thing in the life of a developer but I'm severely afraid to mess things up. My colleague explained something to me that also involves making changes to the database but I'm really afraid to make mistakes. How does one overcome that initial fear? And did anyone experience the same as a junior developer?4

Life as a developer:
Given prototype.
Creates prototype.
Gets services.
Integrates services
Services != Design functionality
Fixes services.
Commits work
In the mean time 69 meetings taken place and everything changed without informing you. Truly fucking the Devs up, while blaming the developer for the incompleted work -
I just had a long argument with the scrum master about my roles as a developer, and apparently it looks like, that I am a tester and a project owner too. For just one payment. FML!
-
The best part of being a Dev is it teaches you to live your life the way you want.
You are a programming language and all the functions inside that language defines you. -

One thing I have realized today is that "A developer's life is incomplete without a good beer and a friendly companion"1 -
When does a developer life turn into a nightmare?
I’m still an intern, senior in school.
All the work I had to do so far was easy, I would get a task to work on for a week and finish it in a day.
When does work really get challenging ?9 -

Anyone else wonder how they got into the kind of the coding they're in?
Like, I wanted to make plugins for music software and DAWs and now I do front end web...
I don't even know what fucking language is used for something like that -
I was looking for a book on Microservices Architecture. There are several books, but I need one which explains all the patterns and related styles on design. The reason being is, I'm convinced about Microservices, but I need to convince my fellow teams and managers.4

You should naturally expect to have no social life when you are a developer. But I managed to get a job with 9 to 6 timings with no annoying managers who call you after working hours. So I have the evening to myself.

There is a University in Karnataka, India called VTU, whose exam paper re-evaluation fee costs more than the exam fees, moreover they'll fail you to make money.
Syllabus remains outdated from a decade or two. You'll be considered great if you managed to mugup the stuff for exams to take ranks.
If anyone relies on it's syllabus, then it's decided that they're gonna be the donkey among whom it produces every year.
You'll only become a true engineer if you realise this truth and seek the real educational resources online.
I saved myself by dropping off the college an year ago, which was the best thing I've ever done. I can make as many projects I can (fullstack web).
I'm here to find out, are there any successful VTU drop-outs out there? or am I alone (maybe successful in future).....5 -
Hello Guys, Is there any web developer in New Zealand here?
Please I want to know. How is life generally in New Zealand as a developer.
