We just put a windows update screen on the new salesguy's computer.
He was so confused!
Detail: he runs Ubuntu as well :P9 -
So Valve just released an update to Steam that includes a fork of WINE called Proton that allows Linux users to play and install Windows games as if they were native.
About 30 titles are currently officially supported but more are planned.30 -
Student next to me tried to be cool and opened a terminal window and said to me: "I'm hacking someone." He was just running "apt-get update" ...11

"Aah, time to make a new Android app"
*starts Android Studio*
AS: "Yo yo yo, before you proceed, update all these 512 things in your SDK"
*creates a new Activity*
AS: "Nuh uh, this shit won't work without this, install it"
*runs app on emulator*
AS: "Hoooold your horses, you need to install this, and this, and update this and this.. oh and also that"
*emulator finally runs, app crashes*
AS: "Ohh, ha ha, oopsies, your Gradle config is also screwed up, change every dependency to the newest version and then update them all"
*config finally done, runs again*
AS: "Umm, I am too lazy to sync it myself, so you must press the nice big button on top to sync it"
"Fuck this"
*closes Android Studio*
AS: "WAAAIT WAIT, before you go, a new Android update just showed up, you must upd..."

Co workers opened the fake windows update website, disconnected the keyboard and mouse
let's just say I sat there for a really loooong time.. cursing windows14 -
A client called me today saying their custom website I built for them is down. It just shows a 403 error now. They said they just wanted to update the prices. I asked what changes they made before it crashed. She said, "I couldn't figure out how to change the prices, so I just installed Wordpress, and now it doesn't work!" They completely deleted the entire website using cPanel and replaced it with a partially installed Wordpress.🤦19

Try to open a new PDF. Adobe says it must restart. I click OK, figuring it just needs to restart the reader itself.
Reboots entire computer instead... For a PDF reader update...
Uninstall time!15 -

// devRant unofficial UWP update (v2.0.0-beta)
//
After several concepts, about 11 months of development (keep in mind that I released 20 updates for v1 in the meantime, so it wasn't a continous 11 months long development process) and a short closed beta phase, v2 is now available for everyone (as public beta)! :)
I tried to improve the app in every aspect, from finally responsive and good looking UI on Desktop version to backend performance improvements, which means that I almost coded it from scratch.
There are also of course a few new features (like "go to bottom" in rants), and more to come.
It's a very huge update, and unfortunately to move forward, improve the UI (add Fluent Design) and make it at the same level of new UWP apps, I was forced to drop the supported for these old Windows 10 builds:
- Threshold 1 (10240)
- Threshold 2 (10586)
Too many incompatiblity issues with the new UI, and for 1 person with a lot of other commitments outside this project (made for free, just for passion), it's impossible to work at 3 parallel versions of the same app.
I already done something like that during these 11 months (every single of the 20 updates for v1 needed to be implemented a second time for v2).
During the closed beta tests, thanks to the awesome testers who helped me way too much than I ever wished, I found out that there are already incompatiblity issues with Anniversary Update, which means that I will support two versions:
1) One for Creators Update and newer builds.
2) One for Anniversary Update (same features, but missing Fluent Design since it doesn't work on that OS version, and almost completly rewritten XAML styles).
For this reason v2 public beta is out now for Creators Update (and newer) as regular update, and will be out in a near future (can't say when) also for the Anniversary Update.
The users with older OS versions (problem which on PC could be solved in 1-2 days, just download updates) can download only the v1.5.9 (which probably won't be supported with new updates anymore, except for particular critcal bug fixes).
So if you have Windows 10 on PC and want to use v2 today, just be sure you have Creators Update or Fall Creators Update.
If you have Windows 10 PC with Anniversary Update, update it, or if you don't want to do that, wait a few weeks/months for the update with support for your build.
If you have an older version on PC, update it, or enjoy v1.5.9.
If you have Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update, update it (if it's possible for your device), or just wait a few weeks/months for the update with support for your build.
If you have Windows 10 Mobile, and because of Microsoft stupid policy, you can't update to Anniversary Update, enjoy v1.5.9, or try the "unofficial" method (registry hack) to update to a newer build.
I hope it's enough clear why not everyone can receive the update today, or at all. :P
Now I would like to thank a few people who made this possible.
As always, @dfox who is always available for help me with API implementations.
@thmnmlist, who helped me a lot during this period with really great UI suggestions (just check out his twitter, it's a really good person, friend, designer and artist: https://twitter.com/thmnmlist).
And of course everyone of the closed beta testers, that reported bugs and precious suggestions (some of them already implemented, others will arrive soon).
The order is random:
@Raamakrishnan
@Telescuffle
@Qaldim
@thmnmlist
@nikola1402
@aayusharyan
@cozyplanes
@Vivaed
@Byte
@RTRMS
@tylerleonhardt
@Seshpengiun
@MEGADROID
@nottoobright
Changelog of v2.0.0-beta:
- New UI with Fluent Design and huge improvements for Desktop;
- Added native support for Fall Creators Update (Build 16299);
- Changed minimum supported version to Creators Update (Build 15063), support for Anniversary Update (Build 14393) will arrive soon;

I hope you will enjoy it! ;)52 -
Hey everyone - I just wanted to update our Android users on the push notification crash that has been occurring.
The good news is the issue should be fixed in the update I just pushed out (should be available in the Google Play Store within a few hours). We apologize for the crashes and thank everyone for their patience.
I'm still looking in to what actually happened here. Our GCM library hasn't been updated in a while and all of a sudden a specific case started failing. I'll continue to look in to how that seemingly happened with no changes in the app. Some other users of the library started experiencing the same issue.26 -
Licensing is so freaking weird and stupid.
I mean, I just forked this repo with an Apache license, so I could update a .json file.
"You must cause any modified files to carry prominent notices stating that You changed the files"
Plain JSON allows no comments.
I'm going to jail.30 -
Corporate IT: YOU MUST COME INTO THE OFFICE. WE JUST RECEIVED AN URGENT NOTIFICATION FROM APPLE OF A SECURITY VULNERABILITY IN iOS DEVICES. YOU HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS HAVING A MAC ASSET. COME INTO THE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY AND UPDATE IT.
Dev: I don’t use that mac, it sits in my office desk drawer unplugged. I’ll update it if I ever need it for anything. Which I won’t, we don’t do iOS dev anymore.
Corporate IT: NOOOOO!!! YOU MUST UPDATE IT NOW!!!
Dev: I’m not wasting time driving into the office this week. We have an important deadline we’re working on, I can’t afford to lose 2 hours to this. Plus it can’t be turned on right now, It’s been unplugged for 2 years.
Corporate IT: THAT WOULDN’T STOP A HACKER!!
Dev: …11 -
Don’t you just love it when you do the following in a prod database 😅
UPDATE table SET someImportantField= NULL; WHERE abc = 123;
If I don’t laugh right now I’m going to cry.5 -
In the bottom left corner of the picture there is a devRant guy with a 3 monitor setup...
However 2 monitors are the biggest multi monitor setup you can select...
*puts tinfoil hat on*
Have I just leaked the next big devRant update?53 -
So. My grandma (280 km away) gave me a call.
Grandma: "Hiii. I have a problem with my PC."
Me thinking "ok. Just an ordinary tech support call from granny..."
Me: "Ok. What's the issue?"
Grandma: "Windows tells me there is no space left on drive F, non-stop"
Me: "As far as I know there is no drive F on your PC"
Grandma: "Would you be so kind to have a look?"
I agreed to log on via team viewer.
To cut an already long story short, there was this April Update which sent a bug all around the globe.
This bug exposed an internal drive Windows uses to do its Windows stuff - whatever it is.
Regularly these kind of drives are hidden from users eyes...
I finally solved it by applying a rollback on Windows.
The update is gone and with the next update there will be a fix from May to hide this drives again.
Microsoft!
I do you scare grandparents all around the globe?!??12 -
Created an alias in BASH
alias fucking=sudo
Just so I can run "fucking apt-get update". Got so used to it I accidentally used it during a presentation. Now the cute interns think I'm awesome while the other devs think I'm an ass.9 -
So I'm doing my thing... Suddenly all open windows start closing one by one and computer starts a shut down.. and i realize the windows update is coming..
But like.. can you at least give me a 2 minutes heads up? How the fuck such a process gets approved in microsoft?
"Yeah just close everything and force restart.. it's fine"14 -
Me: "If today's demo to the client goes well,i will get my first cheque"
My server:"If today i stop working,it will be great"
Android Studio: "If i force a gradle update,it will be just fine".
*crying*
Fuuuuuck. Why nothing goes my way when I want it to????Whhhhyyyyy??3 -
Dev: * In the middle of pushing to prod *
Manager: Hey btw I forgot to mention the client asked for these 5 features awhile back as a part of this update and they just reminded me about them, I haven’t created tickets yet or told anyone about this. Will these features be included in the update that’s going out today?
Dev: …9 -
The moment when you realize you just ran a SQL update with a ';' before the WHERE clause............fml10
-
As most of you already know, the mentioned users in a rant don't receive a notification so you have to mention them again in a comment.
After a suggestion of @Cozyplanes I decided to implement a feature that make this automatic.
Just check the box and forget about it.
It will be available soon in the next update of devRant unofficial UWP!7 -
Working on adjusting a shell script to my needs.
The fucker quits execution after an apt update command is ran.
No reason, it just fucking quits. No error messages or whatever, nothing.
This script can go suck a cock.9 -
Just had to update a website i did for a client 4 years ago. I want to travel back in time and bitchslap myself. Horrible... Just horrible coding...3

TL;DR: Fuck you Apple.
10:30 PM, parent needs iPhone update to update Messenger. How hard can this be?
Need to update iPhone from 9.x to latest, which is so outdated it still required iTunes. Fk.
Boot iTunes on Windows 10 pc that is at least 10 years old.
Completely unresponsive
Crash in task manager
Launch and is completely unresponsive. (Also starts playing unrequested music.. Oh joy..)
Fuck this, go to apple.com to download iTunes exe
Gives me some Microsoft store link. Fuck that shit, just give me the executable
Google “iTunes download”. click around on shitty Apple website. Success.
Control panel. Uninstall iTunes. (Takes forever, but it works)
Restart required (of fucking course).
2 eternities later. Run iTunes exe. Restart required. Fk.
Only 1 eternity later. Run iTunes, connect iPhone.
Actually detects the device. (holy shit, a miracle)
Starts syncing an empty library to the phone. Ya, fuck that.
Google. Disable option. Connect phone. Find option to update.
Update started. Going nowhere fast. Time for a walk at 1:00 AM punching the air.
Come back. Generic error message: Update failed (-1). Phone is stuck installing update. (O shit)
1x hard reset
2x hard reset
Google. Find Apple forum with exact question. Absolutely useless replies. (I expected no less)
Google recovery mode. Get into recovery mode.
Receive message: “You can update, but if it fails, you will have to reset to factory settings”. Fuck it, here we go.
Update runs (faster this time). Fails again. Same bullshit error message. (Goddammit, fuck. This might actually be bad.)
Disconnect phone.
… It boots latest iOS version. (holy shit, there is a god)
Immediately kill iTunes. Fuck that shit.
Parents share Apple account
Sign in, 2FA required.
Fat finger the code.
Restart “welcome” process.
Will not send code. What. The. Fuck.
Requests access code on other parent’s iPhone.
No code present. What???
Try restarting welcome process again. No dice. (Of course)
Set code on other parent’s iPhone.
Get message “Code is easy to guess”. Ya. IDGAF
Use code on newly updated iPhone. Some success.
Requires reset of password.
Password cannot be the same as old password (Goddammit)
Change password.
Welcome process done.
Sign in again on same phone after welcome process done in settings. (Nice.)
Sign in again on other phone with updated password
Update Messenger.
Update hangs. Needs more space.
Delete shit.
Update frozen in App Store (Really??)
Restart iPhone.
Update Messenger.
Update complete past 2. Well that was easy.
Apple, fuck you.
Some call Android unintuitive, but I look at the settings app on iPhone and realize you aren’t any better.
This company hasn’t been innovative since 2007. Over 1000 USD for a phone? Are you fucking kidding me?
Updating an iPhone from iOS 9.x is probably uncommon anymore. But this is a fucking joke. Fix your shit.
Shit like this is why I’ll never again own an Apple product. I have HAD IT with the joke of a business.
Thanks for reading.17 -
Microsoft, if I click the "Update and shut down" button it means I want you to update and shut down, not do a third of the update, shut down then wait for me to turn the computer back on for you to finish! Why can't it just do the update, reboot as necessary then shut down once it's all done?3
-
How long is it ok to wait before telling my colleague that the Windows Update-screen he's been watching for the last 25 mins is just me giving him a lesson in "Win+L"? (He's actually just watching fakeupdate.net)5

Devrant client update:
- load indicator on ajax execs
- changed the design yet again, hopefully final this time lol
- implemented ajax content loading so the menubar doesn't flash
- block users/keywords plugins done, only left to find a clean way to integrate it with the upcoming notifications, so no notifications are fired for blocked users or posts with blocked keywords (similar to twitter mute keywords)
- usernames linkifier plugin
- links get unshortened on feed too (via plugin), without losing the ability to press on a post
next is (just to name a few, the trello list is far bigger by now)
- local notifications, should be firing without GCM/FCM too hopefully, which would be great for people on here that de-googled entirely and don't want microG
- port some of my userscript plugins I haven't yet
- theme system
- global and plugin settings
- plugin update system
- plugin import checks for obfuscated code, one line etc. and warns the user
- client update system7 -
Oh, we don't know why it broke. I know you just did A HUGE FUCKING DATABASE SEVER UPGRADE to the server we're connected to, but no one understands this code, so can't update it to work. Can you roll back 3 VERSIONS so our application that hasn't had a code change in 11 years is optimized?2
-
I just saw
`git add . --all&&git commit -m update&&git push`
as a npm script hook m) I don't even care, just surprised it wasn't named yolo.2 -
To all the people complaining about a windows update breaking their computer.
A linux kernel update just broke my computer.7 -
fb messenger stopped working after the update, it just shows a white screen... it made me realise i don't even care, family and friends contact me there but ... Dobby is a free elf now4

Sooo win has updated itself (in a short 6 hours) and I was wondering what eats my pocket pc's 4 gb ram, so i checked, and turns out system is eating 40-50% of it and its processor ever since the update... *Sigh* Awesome....
(Picture src: tumblr/just-shower-thoughts --> [in reality] r/showerthoughts)7 -
So the other day my Huawei phone got a push update, but after installing it, seemingly nothing happened.
I just took a look at my Android version.
I was rolled back from Android 8 to 7.
Let the softroot begin!16 -
sometimes I hate python....
Ive just chased down a bug where a simple string saved in a simple dict sometimes came out as a f*cking tuple(!) when I needed it!
turned out that at some point this dict got updated with values from some other dict. And at some other point, I decided it was a great idea to rewrite that update code into individual setter's instead ... and of course forgot to remove one the trailing comma's, thus creating a perfectly legal tuple .... *sigh*
No errors, no warnings - just plain corrupt data....9 -
🙄 Windows asked me to install the update thrice. I asked it to remind me later. The fourth time it just shut my system down and started updating..
This is what you call a constructive and understanding OS-User relationship 🌝3 -
I love how Microsoft updated the user interface for editing the PATH variable in windows. Now it is possible to see all entries in a table, before there was just one textfield with many entries seperated by semicolons (I know the update is already some month old now, but still happy)5

A situation i just dealt with on my tech help Discord server:
Beginning:
"my gpu isn't working and i need it to update my bios"
Ending:
"i have to have a cpu and ram to update my bios?"
this kid thought he only needed a mobo, GPU and PSU
he's 19
why6 -
I was working for a startup that needed to update 300 machines that had just come from the factory. We had to open all 300 boxes and update them one at a time. I made a simple script that would run a folder full of shell scripts then keep track of what it ran so it would not run the same script twice. It made it so we could just plug the machines into the internet, they would query some server, download my program, and run it. It saved me from having to ssh into every machine and run commands. Well the head programmer guy saw what I did and implemented it as the main program that would update the entire machine. I didn't program anything into it to verify updates, the shell scripts did not return any indication of success or failure, and I made it in less than 3 hours. It was supposed to be a temporary program to be used for those 300 machines only, but ended up sticking around for 2 years.1

Apple flips the bird to devs again...
So I go to release a new version of my app (critical updates and bug fixes from mgmt) and I had just updated my phone. Yeah, that was a fucking mistake.
“This version of Xcode is not compatible with the new version of iOS.”
Ok... update Xcode...
“The new version of Xcode is not compatible with your version of OSX”
WTF?! This version isn’t that old? Fine... update OSX. 5 hours later...
“Hey, just wanted to let you know that we decided to break every one of your web development tool setting and basically nothing works on your computer now, oh yeah, and we’re Apple so FUCK YOU.”8 -
When you get a system update and think it's Oreo, but it's just a security update. Fuck you Lenovo5
-
Microsoft be like :
"Oh, you're moving away from your computer for a while with all this stuff open? It would a shame if some were to.. UPDATE it!"
It asks with a pop up, and if you don't answer it, it thinks "Oh, you're not telling me if I should update now or not, but I think you probably want me to update. UPDATE!"
For me, if I keep ignoring the update, it starts to create problems for me out of nowhere. It starts to lag and then the task manager starts to lag. EVERYTHING IS NOT RESPONDING.
When I finally update it, it acts like there were no issues at all. Everything is fine..
Even with Xbox, if it wants to update, it doesn't let you go online until you do. If it loses connection mid-update for some reason, it begins the update again from the friggin START. All that time updating gone to waste. Recently, I'm having a lot of issues with it. It doesn't let me sign in a lot of times. "We couldn't sign you in" for some reason. It JUST CAN'T. If you have a slow internet connection, you can't play any game at all. I contacted Microsoft Support about that issue and they concluded that it was all because of the slow internet connection and there were no issues on their end and they told me to GIT GOOD (Not exactly those words). If it does sign you in, it kicks you out mid-game for some reason with the evil pop up saying "Bye User_Name". The game says that YOU signed out (Dumb game, doesn't understand Microsoft shenanigans) and returns you to the main menu. If your game didn't save, well, GOOD luck to you!
Everything takes forever to load, if it decides it's not gonna load, it gives me a really helpful error saying "Something went wrong".
Maybe it's just me, it just hates me particularly. It makes me think that Microsoft intentionally acts like a douche just to get attention..
(In the end I think, maybe, this all is not a big deal if you surrender and accept Microsoft as your overlord)
I tried a few ways to stop Windows from updating automatically, but nothing worked (Maybe, I should try again).
Maybe I should dual boot Linux, but that brings a whole new set of things that I'd have to deal with, doesn't it?
Sigh5 -
Launched a CMS-site for a customer, created a 5-page "manual" (with screenshots) on how to update basic things like adding/removing employees from the site. One week later, I receive an email: "Could you please remove Paula from our site?"... Sure, it'll take me 2 minutes and you'll be billed for half an hour instead of you just RTFM!6

For Windows driver update, found a great (open source) tool to update or install missing drivers.
https://sdi-tool.org/
My dell laptop (Windows 10) screen used to go blank or some bubble used to appear may times a day. Used Dell driver update tool, no update, says all driver up to date.
Then used Snappy Driver Installer tool, which detected my laptop details correctly.
Then it showed that my display driver was almost a year old and there were couple of updates, latest being just last month. In addition to that, there were 30+ updates on disk drivers, networking, sensors, bluetooth, audio etc.
First updated my display driver, upon success, slowly updated the rest of it. Now, the system worked entire day without any issue. Also, my laptop fan used to run full speed seems to have slowed down.
Also, my external monitor clarity has improved.
ps: worked for me, but be careful. Check it thoroughly before updating, update only those drivers which are giving trouble and there are no updated drivers available from windows or manufacturers.8 -
holy fucking hell, who’s dumb ass idea was it to make Visual Studio require a god damn fucking update for the installer before I can uninstall it, you stupid ass dumb fucks MS, I didn’t just tell you uninstall it so you can go burn more data down my shitty copper pipes.3
-
My preciousssss!!
Fucking assholes! Just spent 3h debugging for bugs that weren't there.. Our client insisted we must rollback the whole update, because gui was broken.. after analysing data & testing I figure out that there must be something 'wrong' as there was no data to copy from in the first place...so there should be no bug..
Aaand here goes the best part: they didn't want to point out missing data bug, they just wanted one restriction to be removed, because it 'broke GUI', to allow for empty value on save... WTF?! How can you insist that gui is buggy & that you don't want an update, if you just want something to be optional?! Which was done immediately, one change in one js file?! Dafaaaaaq?!
Kids, English is important!! Otherwise you end up debugging ghosts for 3+ hours withou a cigarette...and waking up a coworker with bad news of rollback at half to midnight... Aaaaaaaargh!!!

I fucking hate when I update my apps and they don't describe what they changed. Like the latest spotify update description:
We’re always making changes and improvements to Spotify. To make sure you don’t miss a thing, just keep your Updates turned on.2 -
Love my android. But oh my fucking stars in a pickle jar... I just did a damn software update. The fuck you mean I have one??? Wasn't even 5 minutes ago. Why are you making me do this???15

Ya know I don't mind Windows updates, I get it the OS needs its updates, so last night a pop up asked to when to do the update I thought hmm maybe Sunday (probably be driving my motorbike so I'll be out of the house), set the time and done.
Afterwards I go to shut my computer down and accidentally hit update and restart out of shear annoyance. So I wait it out, I thought well okay now it's done I won't have to wait. I go to shut down and it says "update and shut down", ... Right after I just updated...
I thought okay at least I'll be going to be knowing tomorrow I can just turn my computer on and play some games to chill for the night.
Oh but no, nope not gonna happen, I have to wait for it to "actually" update. Been waiting for about 30ish minutes :/
I think I'll make sure that updates don't happen anymore, I'm pretty annoyed at this waiting :/
Honestly wouldn't have had Windows 10 in the first place but somehow my computer decided to just install Windows 10 after I kept saying nope to it's damn pop-up, I just turned it on and boom "we're fuckingyour day up by installing Windows 10"
I actually take off anything that makes Windows 10 look like it and make it look more like win7.
70% done :/6 -
Windows update fails with error 0x1235
Me in Technet: Hey, ms, i got this error. How do i fix it?
MS: Install the Troubleshooting for Windows Update and follow the instructions. Before that, create a system restore just in case. Also, if the problem persists, go to your boot menu -> troubleshooting options and follow the instructions.
Hope it helps.
Found it helpful? Yes No
Other random people: just rename $WINDOWS ~BT to anything or delete it. Then continue the process.
.
.
I followed the random people advice and worked.
Fuck MS.1 -
If you're using snapchat you might want to go on it immediately and change your privacy settings.
New update came out, they added a map with everybody's locations down to a couple of meters in accuracy... And the feature is on by default for EVERYONE to see, not just your friends.
What the actual fuck were they thinking?? Just think of all the ways this can go wrong.9 -
When you trying to develop a site, you change some CSS, refresh the localhost and it doesn't update. You try changing that CSS value to something more noticeable to see if you're just imagining things. But no, it's your browser cache. Clear it.2

I bricked my Manjaro install by interrupting a kernel update like a fucking doofus.
After two hours of painstaking troubleshooting using a live image I finally resolved the issue. And man is that a good feeling. Solving complex problems (at least to me) on Linux is just such an amazing feeling ♥️12 -
Call me a spoiled Linux kid but FUCK WINDOWS UPDATE!!
It's not even the shitty deployment cycle that they have for their updates, the real cancer is the fucking update app.
First off, if you fucking piece of shit already have the audacity to load gigabytes of updates over my 0.8mbit/s connection in the background, without my goddamn consent, at least let me PAUSE the fucking download!!! I don't see why the fuck you have to block my connection, and therefore me, from the most basic things like visiting a fucking website for more than a FUCKING HOUR to load useless updates, YOU PIECE OF BLOODSTAINED SHIT, I GOT SHIT TO DO.
And it doesn't stop there, noooo: then you even have the bloody fucking nerve to FORCE ME TO INSTANTLY RESTART AND SIT THROUGH YOUR FUCKING 40 MINUTE UPDATE PROCESS WHILE IM TRYING TO WORK.. WITHOUT THE ABILIT TO DELAY THE UPDATE!!! What the fuuuck?!
It is seldom that I am this 👌 close to just dd'ing /dev/null to my windows partition. Fuck you!!17 -
I know I rant about how bad the app is I have to update on at work is but seriously first week into this job I found skeleton code from a taxi app, it wasn't in English and lately I found some code from some sort of funeral app wtf!
This just takes copying and pasting to a whole new fucking level!4 -
Just heard a site IT leader say her laptop was "fixed with a BIOS update" followed by "I have no idea what that means"

Update on my health: I am completely fine, just like @SoldierOfCode! We are making sure to listen to the news and go to the shelter when there’s sirens.
Please don’t get political in the comments, I don’t want to spark a shitstorm in this post.16 -
So I think I was just in a car crash. Don't remember much, but I'm sitting in a hospital bed with my father by my side and my family in the waiting room. Everything is fuzzy, my brain hurts, and my left shoulder hurts. Today is kind of a blur, as was the last... forever. I'll update as I learn more about the past 24 hours.8

Have a whiteboard next to your office position. Keep your To Do list there and update every day/half day.
PM can just pass and see status. Maybe ask for clarification. Never takes more than five minutes. Both me and him are pleased.4 -
Our new hired (promoted intern) just installed Ubuntu on his new machine.
Now we are the only ones using Linux at work.
He was having trouble with a flickering bug on kernel 4.4.0 and I just told him to apt upgrade that it would solve it..
And he was like: oh.. Can you update the kernel?
That's gonna be a long month...hope he learns this faster than git7 -
It should be FUCKING ILLEGAL to show intrusive popups on the web AND on the desktop. The fucking moron 'developers' who do this type of crap should be fined in the $M range and then banned from using a fucking computer ever again.
It's one fucking thing when a crappy program shows an intrusive update popup when you open it (see notepad++, FileZilla and more), but when I am not even using your fucking malware, but you still shove an update popup in my face while I'm working is just on the next fucking level.
There should be a law that makes this kind of retarded bullshit illegal....22 -
My nipples are hard, as hard as diamond. For no fucking reason at all.
But aside from that important update, does anyone just get this absolute light-headed euphoria whenever they realize they've fixed a bug?
Like my god, its the best feeling. I've only fixed other people's bugs a few time, and even then I experienced it.13 -
Just got a new monitor (HKC NB34C) and connected it to my PC (which didn't have a monitor at the time)
The first thing I see is a green screen of death because of a power outage during a Windows insiders update.11 -
We just had a security training in my office and a sentence in the PowerPoint slide suggested that we should always update windows. I'll pause here. Also they were using Windows XP screenshots to refer.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯2 -
Never call me unfair.
A few years(!!) ago, I ranted about how you had to update the visual studio updater before you could update visual studio (which I still think is a valid rant)
Today I noticed that the visual studio installer just does this itself silently now. Therefore, I choose to apply praise to this welcome change and in the name of justice and fairness, recognize this vast improvement.
*ahem*.... GG VS20223 -
“Hey - just calling you to give you an update”
Great - sorry can you refresh my memory what was this for?
“So I was about to put you through for a client but they’re no longer accepting CVs so just to update you that’s not happening”
Sorry, what was the client again?
“Oh I can’t say, but they’re no longer accepting CVs”
“...Thanks, goodbye.”
*So you call me to tell me that you can’t give my details to a client that you can’t disclosure....get off my line 🤬😡🤬*3 -
I hate when a software update changelog looks like this:
The latest update is now available, update your software to get the most out of it.
I want a fucking changelog before updating my things. Like: fixed a bug, new button with cool new feature. Just something. I have to know. Can't just install something blindly that could ruin my software, especially when it's not reversible..1 -
Firefox.
I ignored your update for ages.
Because half your dev base are retards circle jerking over a language made by a smug midwit marxist who believes in ceremony over productivity.
And then you go and autoupdate without my permisson. Didn't realize microsoft wasn't the only one that could push things on people like common rapists.
Went and pushed an update when I've EXPLICITLY turned down your update nagware hundreds of times.
And now ad block is disabled.
And I'm being flooded by bullshit.
And the 'patch' you released requires me to update.
Well jumping fucking christ on a pogo stick. Why didnt you just force update the whole god damn application you shit-for-brains firefox devs?
What, you thought I wouldn't fucking notice?
You thought, because microsoft did it, that this shit was cool, in 2019?
Like that bullshit you pulled as a 'tie in' for mr robot?
I would kick you in your fucking nuts if I met you.
Ps: Your fucking patch that you put out doesn't even fucking reenable extensions.
Incompetent dumbasses.
I'm moving to another browser with less 'diversity' in the dev team.32 -
Just realized Windows 10 update "Restart Now" button doesn't have a confirmation/cancel screen unlike the normal power options.
Learned it the hard way when I just wanted to change the time it restarts and clicked restart now by accident.
Goes to show how forced these updates are .-.22 -
When using Windows, I really feel like I don't own my computer. Like it'll update automatically without giving a single fuck wether you wish to install these updates on YOUR machine and install what Microsoft wants.
"Sup I'm the Windows update manager, seems like you're in the middle of some important work right now, let me just force reboot your machine and install some crap bloatware"9 -
Ok I just asked my manager if there's no way we can send this daily update to management once a week and she said not possible.
If a better job offer comes in, I'm taking it.
Adios, micromanagers... -

AGAIN !!! MICROSOFT (MAY GOD SEND THEM TO HELL) GAVE A DEADLY BLOW TO SOMETHING I USED TO LOVE !!
This new UI update is just aweful, i mean, i love github, i work using github, i do so many things with it, or should i say that i used to ....
This update seems so un-natural, it just doesn't fit.
Why would the collabs be shown so obviously ??
Why would the main window be so narrow while the rest is widescreen ????
My eyes get tired so quickly when i use it now.
It used to be something nice, easy to use, but now it is more like a social media than a professional coding tool.
I HATE YOU MISCROSOT WHAT EVER YOU TOUCH TURNS TO BE A SHIT HOLE25 -
Every damn time I turn on my laptop I spend 15 mins just closing auto update shit from windows 10 and office
Dear Microsoft I have a 2Mbit line not 100000GB fiber optics, auto update cripples my internet 😒undefined why having internet if you don't auto update please have more updates fucked up just a windows thing4 -
Boi did I forget what a horror is to deal with Wndows...
I just wanted to shutdown a laptop to replace the SSD and a wifi card. Prepared everything, clicked on the [start] and there were only "Update and *" options. Wha the hell I thought, I could spare a few minutes. It's just a software update - should not take long!
Little did I know...
That was 45 minutes ago and It's still shutting down. And I'm just sitting with that screwdrived in my hand, looking at that blue screen and waiting. I feel stupid
UPDATE: I gave up. Long-pressed the POWER button. que sera, sera, right?
Lights go out. I press POWER again to boot it back up (forgot to save smth else). And it boots up back to the "SHUTTING fucking DOWN" AGAIN!!!23 -
Why is it that a lot of developers don't have the most basic of Windows knowledge? For example, a lot of people complaining about Windows Update. I mean, it's just a setting you can configure and a service you can stop and turn off..
It all sounds ironic.8 -
I love Unix, Linux all that shit (macOS can fuck off though). But why WHY WHY does every pissing update have to break something?! Guys I need fucking networking, not even intertubes just basic networking.
Anyway, I've come up with a solution. It is quicker for me to install a new OS and restore files from backup than to fix it, so that's what I do.10 -
@dfox Bug or something? Had this just before the update. Also I got a toast message saying 'invalid user credentials' when I tried to post this before the update.7

I fucking hate stupid accountants!
Yesterday we went to a customer to talk to the accountants because we want to remove one of their unused PC's in the office.
First, just the way they think (and talk if) they are the most important and it's absolutely critical everything works 100%. I see they are important but not 100 times more important than everybody else!
They called us their EDP-guys (EDV in German, that's the translation I found). That insulted me a bit. I'm rather called IT-guy, I don't know anything about the fucking EDP systems nor want I to. I'm there to make sure the hardware works. But whatever, fine, call me what you want.
Then they straight up threatened us, because their work is so important, they can't afford to have downtime in their systems. They don't really care, but the bosses of us both do and if we fuck up they (the bosses) will hold us responsible. There is a fucking update for your piece of shit software (datev)! I don't do the update, I'm just responsible that the update can be deployed on the hardware. I'm not responsible if this update fucks your system and frankly I don't care!
I could tell them all of this but they won't listen. They always talk in this patronising arrogant voice, because they are so important and we better don't fuck up the update.
I'm there to help. I don't want downtime for your systems. I want you to work with our systems the best you can.
But fuck you, I hope the server burns down!13 -
WINDOWS UPDATE JUST FUCKED MY LINUX PARTITION!!! Apparently, this is a common thing? I lost a whole bunch of stuff that I really wanted to keep :/7
-
Can we please stop using continuous delivery on mobile. I don't want to update your app every other week just because you decided to change a comment.
Also Bugfixes and improvements doesn't say anything as a changelog!5 -
I sometimes feel Windows keeps on pushing useless updates, just to mess with the users. Change a single line of code (or rather just add a comment) and push the entire module as new.
How can it be everytime I boot on my windows device, it has an update.
EVERY. SINGLE. FUCKING. TIME.
Same goes for you steam.2 -
I fell in love with Vue and Webpack! 😍😍😍
It is such a breeze to work with components and to be able to just change something and have everything instantly recompile and update on the webpage. I am actually enjoying doing the frontend more than the backend which is strange because I am a backend guy 🤣4 -
So windows decided to be the cunt it is once again!
I turned my windows to sleep cause I was gonna have dinner and I don't fucking know what the fuck windows think "sleep" is but after around 10 minutes a hear a sound of a device getting unplugged (I use an external mouse)
Fuck! Fucking shit, you dimwit, you decided to perform a goddamn update? An update? Seriously? Are you fucking kidding me, I did an update around a week or two ago! And my laptop was on sleep for a motherfucking reason! All my tabs...all those fucking tabs and programs
How the fuck can you update when I only kept it in sleep you shitnugget?!
What kind of asshole does that? I had unsaved files man
And now it restarted twice and no, this motherfucking cunt couldn't even apply the updates; just fucking rolled back!3 -
FUUUUuuuuuuu....
No, just no! I said I don't want you restart right now! Or ever! Dafaq duuude!? I thought we had a deal?! You don't update, I don't rant about you!? Well fuck you too!! Deal's off! I hate you, Loki, I hate you!! Stop restarting & updating when I'm tryin to relax & watch series!!5 -
As promised, here is an update photo! Just bought some nicer BenQ displays and a quad VESA mount to hold it all. My RX 460 can barely keep up, so that's the next thing on the upgrade list.

Just got the Oreo 8.0 update for my OnePlus 5T. Yay!
But it broke something, so now I can't debug my app with Xamarin... 😐
Luckily there's already a bugreport on their bugzilla! It seems like it's been fixed. Just need to update Visual Studio. Guess I'm lucky after all. 😁
...
The problem is still there... 😡
Don't know what to do now... 😕5 -
I just wanted to turn off my throw it in my backpack and go home. But freaking Windows has just decided that this is a great time for an update 😡6

been playing with IBM watson for a while so i can assure you that you don't need to worry about Skynet.
Update: just saw google deep mind, we better start saving food.3 -
Just updated to Fall Creator's Update.
I've got to say, Windows seems much snappier than before, apps open faster than they used to do, and I haven't had any issues till now. For the first time I found a windows update that I actually like. Thank you Microsoft2 -
"Alright everyone, we can't keep this up. Every day our builds are breaking because of test failures."
"We could just be more diligent devs and actually write/update tests based on new behavior we introduce to the system?"
"What? No! We're just going to get rid of all tests!"
a few days later
"Guys!!! Everything's on fire now! How didn't we catch these huge breaking changes!"

Rant
I'm a CS student at a university in the global top 10. We currently have two courses using Java, where we have to submit our work to a judge program. One of them is running Java 7. the second one Java 6! Come on, what year is it? Just update your fucking software and the assignments, you lazy fucks!
First rant. Am I doing this right?6 -
Hey guys, Been a while...

Now a lead backend engineer at a crypto exchange.
Getting offers from startups without even applying, just referrals

Job hunt update:

but hey, it's only been over two weeks for those 5 others! why should i expect efficiency from a company that wants a TeN X DeVeLoPeR? I'll bring my decade+ experience and you can just get around to it... you know, when you feel like!

Had some time again to work on my scripts and changed the calmifier script to detect mid-rant screaming and also make them half transparent after calming them - just to see how much actual screaming there was before.
That option can be turned on, by just setting inside the script "highlight_changes" to true, default is to not highlight them.
Anybody who doesn't update it now, will get the update depending on the tampermonkey update setting, which defaults to once a week iirc.
If you want to try it out now: https://github.com/7twin/...

All these switching to linux posts and it feels universe is telling me to make the switch.
Yesterday, again, i had to go through failing windows 10 update. Wasted over 2 hr just booting up my pc because of fucking update that is incompatible with my PC.
I want to switch right now.
Which linux distro do you recommend? I let devRant choose my OS. ( p.s Its a laptop )33 -
Colleagues cannot seem to grasp that allowing a user to manually update a field via an Api, that only business process should update is a bad idea.
The entire team of around 10 'software developers' cannot grasp that just because the frontend website won't set it doesn't mean its secure. I have tried many times now...
Just an example honestly... Our project follows a concrete repository pattern using no interfaces or inheritance, returning anaemic domain models (they are just poco) that then get mapped into 'view models' (its an api). The domain models exist to map to 'view models' and have no methods on them. This is in response to my comments over the last 2 years about returning database models as domain transfer objects and blindly trusting all Posts of those models being a bad idea due to virtual fields in Ef.
Every comment on a pull request triggers hours of conversation about why we should make a change vs its already done so just leave it. Even if its a 5 minute change.
After 2 years the entire team still can't grasp restful design, or what the point is.
Just a tiny selection of constant incompetence that over the years has slowly warn me down to not really caring.
I can't really understand anymore if this is normal.3 -
The stand-in for the person who normally runs the daily standup meeting (who is currently on leave) asked me today in front of everyone in standup if I've updated my notes. Fuck. Off.
So, I decided to be cheeky and add a comment to the daily standup notes automation task in our project management software that we should just include all of the recipients of the daily status update email in our standup meeting every morning, this way we don't require a OneNote space to update as well as an email.
If they tell me that's not the purpose of standup, then hopefully someone will realise what they've been doing all along.
Let's see how that goes lmao.2 -
I thought I just lost everything on my computer because somehow automatic update from win made my ram run at 1300mhz instead of 1600mhz and it assumed there was a hardware problem and completely froze up every time it started. Luckily I decided to comb through bios first and Bam! Ram at wrong speed! I changed the setting and windows booted happily. Piece of shit update system. 😑5

Update to: https://devrant.com/rants/1573298/
So I just had the interview. It wasn't too bad, but I caught myself stuttering and saying "uhh" way too frequently. I also kind of stumped my toe on a question about explaining a computer virus to someone.
Hopefully it'll go well in the end.4 -
Mgr: composer require. That's all you're allowed to do. I want you to manually go through our word press site, check which ones need an update. And do a composer require in the command line for each to update them.
Me: wouldn't it make more sense to just increment the version in the composer.json and then run update?
Mgr: no, you don't understand how composer works, it's very complicated. Just do require. Don't ever do update.
Me: *does it anyway (reverting later of course) and compares update vs require and their differences in the lock file*
I mean it looks like 'update' is updating important dependencies for each of the packages as well as the package itself... The 'require' just seems to download the package itself but no updates to dependencies for those packages.
But seriously is composer that complicated that I can't just do an 'update'?
I've been reading the composer documentation and it seems to be saying that update is the better way to go...
I'm doubting myself these days...12 -
The Play Store just added even more white to it's design with the latest update.
Once again Google is going the wrong way with their design choices....
Can we please just have a dark mode.1 -
Just tried to install the Windows 10 anniversary update, got 26% done did a reboot and I got a black screen and my laptop doing literally nothing. A couple of resets later, "Windows is restoring a previous version" at least they made sure it can restore a previous version.5

Windows 10 updates. I see many posts about singular events that people have experienced, so I thought I'd try to sum up all the problems I have had.
Home computer, always on:
Is scheduled to update during 'inactive hours' but the options for that window are too narrow. So almost daily the 'required updates' overlay pops up WHILE I'M DOING STUFF and I have to say 'Ok' then close the update settings window that opens automatically so I can get on with what I'm doing.
Now, if I'm just browsing, writing or something like that, it's just really annoying.
But when I'm gaming and it causes the game to freeze up (because, you know, ubisoft and ea and such) and I lose my progress, that pisses me off.
When I'm hosting movie night with my friends and the movie gets interrupted, that pisses me off.
Even when I'm just trying to relax with a good show after a hard day and THAT gets interrupted, it really bugs me.
And then when there's a major update and I don't want to schedule it right away, they decide that I probably meant 'do it in an hour'. And then a message pops up every hour with only the option to postpone one more hour. What happened to all the options for scheduling it for several days in the future? Nope! Can't decide? We'll do it RIGHT NOW, NO TAKEBACKS, THAT'S FINAL!
I cannot fathom that they can't find a way to ACTUALLY do the 'inactive hours' thing.
And then there's the work computer. For the last two years, that has been a laptop that I shut down and take home every day. The common problem with that is that it always tells me it has to update when I want to shut down for the day because I have to go home. I can't leave the pc turned on in my bag, it would overheat. So since there is no option to shut down without updating anymore, I have had to rely on the fact that using the power button to shut down circumvents the update.
And if I don't remember to update at home, it's then going to waste my time the next morning at work.
Just give me the option to delay for a bit, then remind me NON-INTRUSIVELY so I can do it when I have the time.
And then there was the update that prevented the machine from booting and I had to waste TWO working days reinstalling EVERYTHING! And we were about 6-7 people hit by that update in our organization.
So yeah. Windows updates are a real fucking problem. Yes, I wan't critical fixes for security problems and other serious software flaws.
But the current policy of 'fuck you, we're doing this' is just not fucking acceptable in any way.3 -
A little update after yesterday's catastrophe:
No catastrophe today (so far). Managed to clear some space on the servers, and the backup ran correctly overnight.
Also...and I'm still checking this... but I think I've just received a pay rise.
wait....is today...a good day?2 -
It's not bad UX! It's just deprecating and replacing it with a hidden feature!
So before there was an Uninstall button on the long-press menus but they removed that in some update...
So now all icons only have a Edit, Remove, and App Info
I finally got annoyed enough after looking for a Setting to just email them...4 -
Cursors.
WHY U DO DIS?
I know I'm impatient but 20 minutes _and still going_ on an update is madness, even at this volume records, and it's all because one of the numerous dependent triggers is running A CURSOR. Genuinely thought the query had just put itself out of its misery, as I am tempted to do.1 -
Ok, so many people rant about windows update. It can fuck up things, starts unexpectedly (after 100 warnings and messages letting you choose when but ok) and it takes too long to update.
I use Windows daily so I update regularly and never takes more than 5 mins. 20 when its a major update twice a year. So let's talk about Linux.
Yesterday I wanted to try out .net core on Linux so I booted my antergos vm to do it. TLDR: Didn't do shut because, surprise, Linux updates.
So apparently I downloaded the wrong version of visual studio code. Uninstall and install the right one then. Nope, can't do that. Some dependency must be updated. That dependency is on the highest version on the AUR, I have to get a different one. Ok, no problem. But I can install the other because uninstalling the original breaks more dependencies. Well fuck then.
So I decided I'd do a full system update with pacman, shouldn't take long. 1.6gb worth of update. I have 200mb download so it should be fast right? Well, I had to wait a couple of hours.
So I couldn't do anything on my afternoon because of Linux updates. That's an original rant isn't it?
And before the comments get here, yeah I know it's arch, it's difficult and all that. This isn't about being hard to do. It's just annoying and making me lose time.3 -
So a few days ago windows decides to update. No alerts, nothing. Just a random update. 4 HOURS LATER it's still going "hi, we have a new update for you". By hour 5 it's finally done. My wonderful new desktop is a black screen with broken keyboard drivers (mouse still works somehow) and the other user accounts are also broken (but explorer somehow still loads). Then these motherfuckers have the nerve to send a dialog saying "congratulations on updating Windows to the latest version" ...... ;-;
reinstalled windows and everything works again. just need to download ~500Gb of programs on a >1mb/s connection.
fml
ps. this is my first rant, sorry if it's a bit incoherent.1 -
First "rant"...
There's a lot of complaints about Windows 10 and it's updates and everyone bashing them.
Does nobody turn off their computer at night?
It installs my updates during the night for me and it even wakes up if needed to do so. I have never looked at my update screen when rebooting or turning my computer on, ever since I have Windows 10 freshly installed... Only exception is the Anniversary Update. So I don't see a reason why everyone hates it so much...
Am I just that lucky or what?11 -
I genuinely want to murder the degenerate retard working at chrome how decided that extensions are allowed to open popups whenever they update.
NO ADBLOCKPLUS I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT YOUR NEW UPDATE JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP AND BLOCK YOURSELF YOU WORTHLESS CUNT2 -
Windows: restarting in 10 seconds
Me: probably just a bug or something like that *click OK button*
10 seconds later
Me: it's no a bug! IT'S NOT A BUG! let me save my stuff
(I don't now why windows did that it made some kind of update without warning except for the 10 seconds and then I had some problem s like I couldn't connect to a SQL server and the computer was super slow)6 -
Why the fuck are you making me put in my email to look at a computer desk? I saw an ad and was curious about it and the price, so I clicked the ad. I don't give a shit and don't actually plan to buy anything, just let me look asshats.
Shit like this is why you have an email inbox with 650,087 emails about a fucking privacy policy update.2 -
Me: does literally anything
Npm: breaks
Why NPM? Why must you do it? This is the third time this week on a third system. I just wanted to update so my packages would work. But nooooooo. Oh you wanna update? It'd be a real shame if I, I don't know, didn't update properly whatsoever and all of a sudden couldn't find any internal modules I need to run.
"Just use npm i npm@latest"
Yeah I would except for the whole I can't use NPM at all thing. even npm -v breaks. Can't find internal module. So I literally have to wipe eveey trace of npm/node and do a clean install.
It's so frustrating! I can't do any work because I spend all my damn time fuckin around with NPM.10 -
Just received my new toy (pixel c).
Of fucking course it needs to download a huge update as soon as you start it8 -

Helping a client to update their 5 years old payment system to support the new mobile PayPal library via Braintree.

Installed and then realised the server is still on PHP 5.3 (CentOS 6).
Panic.
Told my client that they require a new server just so that I don’t need to manage the PHP 5.3 to 5.4 update on their live server and I can install Node to use the Braintree NodeJS SDK 😇.

Microsoft is asshoe.
They tried to force update a Windows 10 Home machine to Windows 11. Nobody clicked okay on anything. It had icon in task bar indicating it would install it on reboot. I had to go into the update settings to click "no for now". Fuck you microsoft. Eat shit and die. Just leave my shit alone.11 -
Guys, just a quick update on the ability to delete default apps on iOS 10 since Apple is not saying much, I've just deleted all the defaults and gained around 0.38GB in total, it would appear that some of the Apps aren't in fact deleted but are just hidden from the home screen (which would explain the lack of a size being given on the App Store)1

The newest Win10 Update freed up 13GB on a 32GB laptop, so fucking happy, holy shit - I had to watch every little thing that couldn't go onto the microsd because windows was always leaving me only max. 2GB, now I can just blast it all onto the fast storage!5
-
Apparently the windows 10 anniversary update did "something" to my laptop today.
Keyboard stopped taking input at a random moment a few hours after the update. I shut it down, and it's stuck while shutting down. Pressing the power button has no effect, and the battery is non replaceable (except with a screwdriver and unplugging a cable, which I don't want to do while there is still power running through the system)
Guess I'll just leave it unplugged and hope for the battery to die.
Thanks you Windows 10, thank you Dell P57F002.15 -
On today's episode of Corporate BS
I must please go update logstash on this server. Okay, so I literally just need to ssh in and run "yum update logstash"
No, I need to apply for temp root access and depending who picks up that ticket, I may have to log a change request5 -
I don't want new features or updates anymore. Almost every OS gets bloated with new features I don't want, while also breaking backwards compatibility and a working setup.
Phone? Apps not compatible anymore since update or just disappearing from the phone.
Computer? Often unstable updates, and since this has happened many times before I try to delay updates as long as possible but then caves in from the annoying update notifications.
Would love to get security updates, but come on, stop it with the bloat apps. Let me just uninstall the features I don't want and let me opt in instead. Make it possible to build extensions and plugins to customize behaviour. Why does software have to spoil like this?2 -
Are Apple engineers incompetent or just jerks? How a patch update breaks so many things that I'm forced to update xcode and then xcode forces me to update the whole fucking system!?
Perhaps they just don't care about semver and break thinks whenever they feel like it..8 -
I'm looking for a distro that is more modern than Ubuntu 16.04, not the shithole that Ubuntu 17.10 is and works, practically, out of the box with my xps 9560.
this 17.10 update thing is driving me nuts. the plot twist is.. if I don't get it set up before tomorrow I'll just switch to windows.17 -
I really do wish that Apple would put some more effort into their update screen.
Just having a progress bar that crawls along at an agonising pace isn't useful, in fact it makes the process feel longer than it is.
Give us some feedback as to what is going on, even Windows and Linux managed that.1 -
The split second feeling of EXECUTE an UPDATE and SET value without putting WHERE clause.

Anyone can suggest the best practice for this type of accident UPDATE / DELETE?
Does using BEGIN TRANS ROLLBACK is safer way to execute?5 -
So, update on the ransomware attack on the health ministry in Brazil: wasn't a ransomware.
They just rerouted the DNS.

**Attention @johnmelodyme and all AltRant testers**
I just pushed a quick bugfix update to AltRant, in the hope that it will fix the crashes that were reported. I felt like the app's dodgy situation wasn't up to my standard of quality so I worked as fast as I could to fix the issues, as people are actually starting to prefer my app over the original. Please make sure to perform a full reinstall of the app before continuing, because I actually wasn't experiencing the issues described in my initial testing before releasing the update that needed fixing.31 -
When you go to update your Mac think great I’ll go chill out for half hour, let it update and hit restart, then come back to your computer and realise Mamp stopped your computer restarting without entering a password. FFS rookie error put in the password computer restarts to update. “Calculating time remaining...” 40 minutes. I’m so fucking bored right now just staring at the screen and having a rant.1

Training a developer... After one year, he still doesn't understand "Update-Database"
Create a powershell command and just tell him to click on it after every git pull -
Just wanted to start a personal project and guess who think it's the best time to update right now?
THANK YOU WINDOWS 😥
Maybe tomorrow7 -
A mandatory update (for security) for MS Outlook has just broken the badge indicator for new emails 🤡1
-
The last communication we had was me asking you if you would like a service for that, with no response? And now, ten days later, you’d like an update on when it will be available?
Well I raised a pull request on your side a week ago, your developers have just been ignoring it.
What? No, I don’t know when it will be merged and ready. -
My phone just randomly started installing "instant apps" by itself even though my settings are explicitly set to not auto download update anything. It's not even visible in my installed apps to remove. After a quick search it seems like Google is forcibly rolling out a new feature. If I wasn't looking at my phone I wouldn't have known. Thanks for eating my mobile data.10

Boss just told me that he thought him making changing directly on production was "OK", because it always seemed to automatically update the other environments when his changes appeared "magically" a week later.
Yeah, because the frequent deployments I do and then come across your un-approved changes which I'm constantly flagging up has nothing to do with it!!
*facepalm* -
Which was the worst talk with person of yours in tech field?
For me:
Seen a person want to upgrade his processor to i7 from i5.. just like windows update...5 -
So I actually got an update for my PC at work, proposing me to postpone it or to do it later. I postpone it to one hour later, since I'll be buying food for lunch, it can update and reboot.
When I came back from lunch, laptop is asking me to postpone or do the update right now. So I sigh because the laptop just stayed locked without doing anything, and ask it to do the update in 4 hours, when I'll be leaving.
2 minutes later, it forces me to update with the "30 min left before rebooting", so I sigh again, closes everything and reboot.
Since it's a Windows, it's slow on booting by definition. Plus launching Slack, Eclipse, Firefox, VLC. Takes time. Plus launching the server. +1000 files to compile then deploying.
I lost 20 minutes because of that edgy bitch called "update".3 -
another windows 10 FORCE UPDATE just messed up my whole system. My mouse is not working properly, every app is become unresponsive within a few minutes, every window is needing life time to load, every folder is needing lifetime to navigate, Android Studio is taking hours to fire up. Why Microsoft!! WHY!!!???20

@dfox How do you feel about an update to the profile page? I want to link to my personal website, perhaps some regex black magic to override the github link if it matches a URL?

You know what, I think the USA government just had a Windows Update, oh no wait, their versions of Windows are too old, they ain’t attacked by MS anymore.
-
I just want to thank Windows 10. Because of 3 updates in a week I got to do almost no work, spend 4hrs understanding why I was in a recovery mode loop, and make me lose a days worth of work by hiding the only folder I stupidly left on my C drive post update.
Without this I’d actually have to do work to get paid, and that’s just gross. -
Hi guys. I'm totaly new to git and github. I visit it from time to time but I never contributed.(i know, my description lied, a bit. i forgot to update it to say yesterday, a week ago etc.). I just created my first repo. I want to know where would be a good place to start to learn about it and know how to structure it and etc?15

I hate the Android update policy as hell. Why do they have to publish a new version each year? Why not a LTS version which is supported for 5 years? Barely no manufacturer is able to change their own interface aiming to adept it to the new Android version. Windows isn't publishing a new os every year. They just update it regularly to implement new functions. Ubuntu is doing the same.
WHY THE FUCK NOT ANDROID?
My HTC A9 was the first with Android 6. I didn't get Android 7 until now?! I paid a lot of money for this peace of shit! And I was granted an update for Android 7. So where is it HTC? Where?!?!?!?!?!?!6 -
I still have old crusty ass 5.1 Lollipop on my phone because I can't let go of the adorable blob emojis. So many good memories.
But now I can't update apps anymore -- can anyone tell a dummy like me how to upgrade from Lollipop to just Marshmallow, nothing newer (to retain the Marshmallow blobs)?7 -
Just mirrored sudo to my own Gitea instance yesterday (https://git.ghnou.su/mir/sudo). Turns out that this chonkster is 200MB compressed (LZ4 on ZFS). I am baffled by it... All it needs to do is reading a configuration file describing what users can be elevated, to which user and which commands they can run. Perhaps doas wasn't a bad idea after all?
Oh and it got a privilege escalation vulnerability just yesterday (https://security-tracker.debian.org/...), which is why I got interested in it. Update your sudo packages if you haven't already.11 -
Yet another ticket comes in about a feature not working after we push another update. So in my meeting I bring up adding testing would reduce this. Yeah boss just wants me to fix this issue and just do manual tests....fml1

Did Windows really just force install an update on my notebook?
Got a bluescreen on this machine (first one ever). Then it did some counting from 0-100%. After that it installed updates and restarted!4 -
Even seniors make mistakes. In case you were ever doubting yourself - just remember that.
I just had a very senior level programmer on my staff add a function to a production system that issues an SQL UPDATE query without a WHERE clause. Fortunately, only the 1st entry succeeded and the rest failed due to "duplicate record" errors. Clearly he had intended to do a SELECT to check if an entry was present. If it was present, do an UPDATE, otherwise do an INSERT (think UPSERT - but done manually). However instead in the insert part they were both UPDATE's. The first update was normal looking but the second UPDATE was just this weird malformed-looking thing where he tried to do an UPDATE but to every field including the key fields. Clearly he was thinking about an insert but actually writing it as an update. Every now and then I need to remind myself that these things happen. The guy's not dumb - just made a mistake.
I'm just happy it "failed unsuccessfully".4 -
Oof, scope creep
Come back to an 8 month old project and I can't update the website because something in webpack needs something in python to compile... Um why. Literally just a poster with some images and a markdown parser.
So I spent 5 hours and 850 lines of code later modernizing the code and... I have the same website again but now it compiles. Woo? -
I implemented the equivalent of “?.” In typescript with a function callled safeRetrieve(descend into the field only if the object is not null).
We could not update typescript, so I just created this function and it made me used to use ‘keyof T’ as a parameter type… I still feel very satisfied after I use this approach with anything because it really feels like using typescript correctly!4 -
36 hrs !
Just reopened my first android app project and was truly disgusted by the code.
So thought I should refactor it and publish a new update 😐
The update is still due and I am banging my head on the wall1 -
Can people at least write a damn comment and tell me why the fuck they don't like the app???
Yesterday I released an update and noticed someone left a new review, without comments, just a one star review.
First I was worried because maybe the update has some nasty bug, but no, this stupid user rated the app without leaving a comment, GREAT!!!
Now google only shows that specific review because the others were of an old version, so great, now anybody wanting to install my app will only see this shit.
If you already took the time to open the play store specifically to rate the app, fucking say something!!! insult me, say it's a bunch of crap but say something you piece of shit!5 -
Ever since i learned terraform i cannot go back. I cant fucking use the ui anymore. This shit is too good. 1 command to create all bullshit and 1 command to destroy all bullshit. Fantastic. Misconfigured shit? Just fix it in a file and 1 command to update it. Perfect. Need to add more shit? Add more lines and 1 command to update. Shitastic. Instead of misconfiguring bullshit or forgetting to delete some shit manually i can simply just do it all 1 command no errors
HOWEVER i noticed sometimes even terraform gets fucked up with bullshit. When im destroying my infra it infinitely says destroying. As if its stuck in that loop. No idea why. So i have to manually destroy the bullshit and then run destroy a fww more times till it works5 -
Hi guys. It's unicorndev again.✨
Yesterday I made a post on a CLI app that brings your Github feed to the terminal. And the response from you guys was very nice. Since that was the initial release there were some minor bugs and issues left. So I just released v1.2.2 with some of these issues fixed ex:
- Filtering out depandabot events.
- Detecting Github user name the right way.
- Adding update notifier for future releases.
If you installed the tool yesterday then please update it to the latest version. Thanks :)

Just posted a comment, and I realise it should be a rant.
In reply to stalkCoder (i think):
| At first there was nothing

A new creation myth appears.
$ git add --all
$ git commit -m "Update 32 at 2:48 AM"
$ git push
The new creation myth is destroyed by the pure rage of a thousand Git commit message standards. -
Love writing comments, hate writing documentation.
Ugh, I know it is needed but just don't care about it as much as the code/comments which is a more direct 'here is what this does' approach. Writing idiot proof documentation sucks. Any little change? Have to remember to update the docs. Yeah, not happy.1 -
I hate it when software downloads an update
and then shuffles a notification up my face saying "An update has been downloaded and ready to install".
Just WTF is wrong with these developers! What if I say no then you just successfully wasted my fucking internet data and disk space. Thank you and no thank you idiots.1 -
So everyone here has probably seen many posts ranting (or should that be rants posting) about windows updates in the lastest version of Windows. I have seen one too many rants about losing work due to this well it happened to me to. ..almost.
Since I have an editor that saves work automatically I didn't lose anything but just had to restart by applications and set my windows how they were again. It wasn't planned and I had previously manually disabled windows updates but they still ran and rebooted my machine...grrrrr!
Doing some more research I found my previous fix which worked in Windows 10 1511, and 1607 versions (anniversary update and prior) doesn't work in version 1703 or 1709 the Creator's and Fall Creator's updates respectively.
If you have version 1511 or 1607 you can just disable the windows update service and windows store service and appxpackage services to completely stop windows updates and unexpected reboots. I ran it like that for over a year from 2015 well into 2017. After being impressed with the newer Fall Creator's update I decided to manually update to 1703 and then to 1709 which is the latest version.
The problem is, the old disable service fix isn't enough now in these newer versions. To disable updates in the newer versions you have to stop the usoclient which is the update orchestrator. Simply disabling the services doesn't work anymore.
Changing the file permissions of the usoclient will work and stop the scheduled tasks from firing.
Here ya go, no more unscheduled reboots. YOU pick when you want Windows to update:
https://ghacks.net/2017/12/...5 -
I don't generally agree with the death sentence, but maaaybe it should be allowed specifically for the person who created the current iteration of Windows Update. Just got woken up by a video playing on my computer, which happened because Windows fucking Update thought it was a good time to reboot for no reason.

FFS, I wasted my time reinstalling nodejs just to update my npm and tried npm i -g npm.
Outputs a success status but when I check via npm -v it's still the same old version.
Or maybe I'm just too dumb that I don't know how to do it right.10 -
Just tried the new PYCHARM update
Honestly speaking I was a bit disappointed with the update as a whole.
Firstly, I it didn't recognize conda as the default development environment and moreover it didn't let me switch from virtualenvs also it took away my in built terminal option and to further aggravate my miseries the performance of the IDE as a whole had fallen quite a bit for instance at one point the ide alone was using around 1.5GiB of RAM and a huge
chunk of my CPU usage -
If I send you an update and you start writing a response with: "Actually, I just tried this in IE..."—follow these steps:
1) Stop typing.
2) Step away from your desk
3) Jump off of a bridge2 -
WHY
WINDOWS

And why when I see a question about turning off the update, the answer is always "why you want to disable the update? Its dangerous you know bla bla bla bla"

Oh, and for the record, I have installed ubuntu on my first hardisk, and win on my 2nd hardisk which is I installed for gaming purpose only10 -
Discords update "policy" is really annoying.
I daily-drive Manjaro and discord refuses to allow you to log in with an older client version when they release an update.
Manjaro's stable takes about two weeks to catch up so when this happens I'm stuck looking for an alternative way to update.
Usually I go for the AUR or (if available) unstable branch package but today the AUR wasn't up-to-date yet when I encountered this problem.
This is a minor inconvenience and was fixed about an hour later when the AUR was updated with the newer discord-electron-bin but I just don't get discords game here?
Why not allow the previous client version to connect and alert users of an available update like any other sane chat application does?
You could go for a time period like two weeks or a month and AFTER that start forcing users to update. I don't get why they force it the instant they release the update.
Just wanted to share this annoyance here, maybe someone encounters this possibility when designing update cycles for their application. I urge you not to instantly lock-out older versions. It's annoying, useless and restrictive. Or if you do so, opensource it so repositories can immediately build from source and sync and don't need to wait for a maintainer to update the bin in the repo.23 -
Customer complains about an issue after a software update. The head of department himself tested the update and got an error message.
Me looking at the logs. Ok, that's an issue, but based on hardware failure, customer should fix his hardware, no relation to the new software.
But surprisingly close to the software update, which piques my curiosity.
Me looking at older logs ... same issue. EVERY FUCKING DAY. For months. The corresponding error message only appears if a user is logged on, so quite a few people have seen it. Obviously nobody cared. Maybe we just ditch error messages, it'll save lots of work. -
My idiotic teacher doesn't know the difference between Java and JavaScript , asked us to use a old version of Code::Blocks(some c/c++ IDE) just because she thinks that a update would modify compiler in such a way that basic code would never give the same output , she blames the compiler just because she isn't capable to see her mistakes and gives me bad grades just because she walked through college and I didn't.2

Why is every one of these marked critical!? Every month or two they have an update that is critical and they are usually just security improvements. Is their security really that bad to always mark as a 'critical' update.

This one was from my Tech Lead, She had to update phone number of a customer in Database on production server. And guess what she forgot 'WHERE'. Next we were facing each other with poker face. :|

A casualty of Windows Update wrecking my machine was the hosts file with the dev domains I added to make my life easier.
It's trivial to add them back as I encounter them, but that's just another little waste of time that Microsoft would be billed for if the world functioned like it should. -
Just wanted to update you guys on the status of the weather app i was working on.
I have decided to stop working on it for the time being but might return to it at a later date.
The decision was in part due to it being a fairly generic idea in a already saturated market.
Thanks for the support however and hope my next project will be as well received.4 -
Booted up IntelliJ to find the 2018.2 update just dropped. Took me a moment to get used to the design changes they've made, especially overhauling most of the icons.
Only thing I don't like in this change is taking away the color icons from my tool windows, there was a plugin to fix it though thankfully. I need some color in my workflow!
How's the update treating other jetbrains users? -
I'm currently missing a university class because of a wincrap update I didn't consent to. It didn't even ask if it can reboot, it just randomly did it while I was working.

so... is ReScript just a bunch of butthurt javascript developers who couldn't hack it to learn TypeScript (older, better tooling, better community, massive support with library typings, etc.)
seems like just a lot of extra, seemingly pointless and useless differentiating syntax rules
why do we need to keep reinventing the wheel?
"Our type system is guaranteed to *never* be wrong."

update: confirmed, all i've found on the web is rescript shillers trying REALLY HARD to defend it, and mostly failing3 -
No I don't want your updates every single day, Windows 10. Maybe I don't want to be so edgy with your updates. May be I like it XP style when updates didn't used to bug me with every single boot up and power down. It has become even worse. Who thought defering updates to the next boot up was a good option? It fucking interferes with the flow of work. They were like -
"You know what, let's update till 35% and then fucking update the remaining 65% at next boot"
"But users will be frustated"
"We'll show the update screen with clean font and a nice background. It will calm them down"
"Okay, so let users choose when to download the updates"
"That's not a fucking option, mate"
And if you are going to force updates down our throats please fucking mention what is being changed as a short description instead of showing a 'KBxxxxxxx' update number! If not that, at least hyperlink the thing to your update docs page! OR Mention a version buff if not it! I HATE seeing 'Update for Windows 10 Version xxxx for x64-based Systems' EVERY. SINGLE. TIME I see an update ready to be downloaded.
And no I don't play Candy Crush, or other games that are pre-installed as soon as I re-install fresh Windows or go on Xbox App. I hate to do this ritual of turning off auto download from Windows Store every time. So please don't pre-configure anything for me. Keep it fucking raw. That's why Linux distros win.
I'm just saying, Service Packs were a great thing with a need of little improvements. You guys ruined the whole experience, Microsoft.2 -
I know Windows update rants are a dime a dozen but HOW IN THE FUCK DID YOU MICROSUCKADICK BOOT LICKERS SHOVE SO MUCH HORSESHIT INTO THIS UPDATE THAT IT UNINSTALLED VIRTUALBOX? The hell?
Really, I rebooted my PC, short cuts everything, gone! Newer stuff is there plus any restore point would have had VirtualBox installed, so what the hell.
I’m stating to think that when Windows says “all your files are exactly where you left them” it’s a best guess because it just completely fucked with all your files for no reason and tried to put them back but it’s not so sure.4 -
Why does it seem like every time I finally learn how to use a new piece of technology, it becomes obsolete and I have to start all over again? And don’t even get me started on the constant updates and upgrades. Just when I think I have everything figured out, BAM! New update, new features, new headaches. Can’t we just stick with one version for more than a month? Is that too much to ask? 😤4

I might have gotten myself in the situation that I have to update this Android app, whose development was outsourced (we're a .NET shop). I just peeked into the APK and realized it's written in js (Cordova).

Microsoft C/C++ code keeps on giving:
https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-g...
Too sad, that Microsoft is too poor to afford good devs. As a lot of devs here are sure, that good devs surely can code safe and secure in C/C++, Microsoft probably just lacks the resources to get such devs to work for them.13 -

The value of a good walk...
So I was stuck with this problem. There's the data structure then there is the display of the data structure. Two copies of the data which is fine.
But the displayed copy is a pain to work with (WinForms) and there the was problem of having to handle events when the displayed data changed then update the back end actual working array and synchronize it so they're both up to date. Couldn't figure out a good solution. Actually slept on it. Still it didn't sit right to have two copies like that and sync it.
Went for a 20 min walk and BAM! Solution found. There was a way to just directly update the crappy WinForm and sort the data and keep the properties then when done displaying/selecting just convert to the working data format...so simple no synching required!1 -

That's pretty awesome -_- angular decides to simply discontinue older (half a year) versions of their cli tool by overwriting the older releases with an update notice. Causing my project (jsRant) to break until I update to the newest version.

F*ck software updates..
So while working today, one of the IT support guy came and asked to update my windows machine due to some stupid company 'security policy' they were following .. That update took more than 3hrs.. The reason it took so long because I somehow managed to avoid any updates for 6-8 months.
But that is not the end of the story... Windows update was followed by a bios update, some softwares, and at this point I just gave up and went for a cup of coffee, and left my machine locked in a drawer still updating and it will stay in this condition until tomorrow.. We'll see if something breaks after updating.
F*ck why are there so many updates and why each of them requires a f*cking reboot...
Productivity today was less than the number of side projects I completed. 😪6 -
Just read a rant about webpack and suddenly the hate boiled up again ...
Why is it just so damn annoying to configure?

Fuck Windows. I just checked settings hoping to see the Creators update but noooo it's been failing to install a minor update for weeks now. How often does this happen to you?

Was about to give up and migrate everything to a fresh system until I realized...
*reboot*
Ah, it works now!
... Why does it always take me so long to realize that's an option!?3 -
FUCK GOOGLE'S INSTANT APPS.
I know google is bad in general, but fuck Instant Apps in particular!
Doesn't matter if you've disabled them from every account you have, they will still update and install themselves no matter what! Doesn't matter if you're on wifi or on a mobile connection using data either!
What's even worse is that there is no trace given of these update - just a temporary notification while it's downloading and installing the update, then it's gone! Blink and you'll miss it.
Can't even get rid of this shite, because I have a few accounts tied to a project that are entirely based on google services :(

I am using flutter in my office right now to develop a cross platform app. Flutter is great and everything but there is just one issue. WHY ARE FLUTTER UPDATES SO DEVASTATING?? Latest flutter 1.22 takes in dart 2.10 ehich replaces @reuired with anew keyword required. What the hell!!! And also every var is now by default null safe. Whyyyy??? I was just trying to adjust to the update made in 1.12. oh and btw it went from 1.12 to 1.22 stable in just 6 months.5

When you add a feature to your app, test quickly and see the new feature works, so publish to play store, only to discover you have broken core functionality 😭.
This just happened to me, I discovered it not log after the update and had to rush to fix it after discovering the play store has no "roll-back" feature ☹️.3 -
I just released a new version of AltRant for TestFlight users, it’s supposed to fix most issues about the home feed layout. All testers are asked to update and test.

So DTU just decided to update one of the central systems, they project that the system will be offline for about 12 hours.
Just so happens that IT'S THE FUCKING SYSTEM THAT ALL STUDENTS NEED TO USE RIGHT FUCKING NOW.

Goddamned apple. "Just works" my ass.
My girlfriend's 2014 MBP told her an update had already downloaded and she had no choice but to install it, which doesn't bother me. Now, though, it tries to update, then fails, and tells you to run diagnostics. Diagnostics says nothing is wrong, and says to contact support and it boots a minimal version of the OS that only runs a minimal version of safari. You try to access the chat feature and it never fully loads the chat interface. I can probably restore it, but I wanna know what was wrong. It's a really expensive brick right now.3 -
What I "discovered" recently is, that Android will sometimes update certain apps even if you have auto-update disabled in Play Store.
Yes, just like that. I am not sure what exactly triggers the update, but it is certainly possible.
Just now I have seen that my Netflix app got auto-updated. Which is not a big deal in itself. But taking control out of the user's hands IS a big deal. This needs to stop. ❎10 -
Why do some employers feel like they're doing you a favor by shoving a project on you done with a shit technology you aren't well versed in?
"It's just a small update."
"It will look great on your CV. Every Big Company™ uses it!"
I wasn't interested in learning sharepoint before I started doing this 'small update' and I'm definitely not interested in putting it on my CV now.2 -
just receive a refurbished 4 years old laptop.... then deep clean it.... now having dilemma on picking a distro......
mainly use to run data analysis (r, Python, Java, C++, mySQL, MongoDB and some cloud servers...)
my thinking about a good distro to me, comfortable appearances, customize freedom, community support and constant security update.
any suggestion people??6 -
"Here is a minor update to our library from 0.8.x to 0.9.0. - Oh, and it is breaking everything, because we changed the API."
o'rly?!
What on earth will happen on a major update?
Really, what is it with the fear of major release numbers? Just name it 1.0 and 2.0 if you break 1.0.
Better yet: just give it a new name. Thingy2 would totally do the job.3 -

The joys of returning from my annual leave..
My contributions after just being back from a 7-day leave.. 27 in total.. PR's, issues, bug fixes, feature fixes, requested features,..
Feels good tho.. It was a productive day today and we made the weekly update! :D
( Yes, I pushed commits while on vacation :D )2 -
Dependency hell - when you have a package you want to update and then you find out 3 other things depend on that version of that dependency and then your pretty much screwed so you just leave the original version of the package you were trying to update in place.
-
I swear if I see one more person/blogger/news-article/YouTuber say "Microsoft Update that broke computers worldwide" about the *CrowdStrike* fiasco I will flip.
And half of those don't even get the rest of the story correctly either, just make up bullshit for the sake of publishing a story.2 -
This is my first "Fuck you Windows" post. I just got a warning from GitHub that blocks me from using it;
"You must update your password to continue using GitHub.com"
Who the fuck are you? I am risking to be hacked. Why do you care, you just warn me and move on. How dare you block me and force me to use better password.19 -
My boss told me I have to update a ms access db that hasn't been touched since 2012... I know nothing about access or vb and I have no desire to learn that crap. But I leave for vacation on Friday so I just have to skate by until then.

I tried watching the NET conference on my Android phone and got ago while having breakfast but the video loads but then doesn't play.. Anyone else?
After trying in Firefox I just gave up and Tweeted about how this probably correlates with the quality of the update...
Good job screwing up a feature launch...7 -
This place I’m consulting at just had a new Directory of Change, first policy she made for IT is mandatory 3 working days wait for any release in Test and 2 weeks for Prod. That includes application config value update in Test database. We think she might have misunderstood her job title Ms. Director of No Change..2

Ok, so here is the thing:
After a very long WINDOWS UPDATE
the sound has gone. No speakers or headphones working. After wasting >10 hours (not in a row)
trying to find the FINAL SOLUTION, I have just gave up. Bought a working external sound card, but I could only use headphones plugged into it.
In a week, I booted Linux (cos I have never really
used it and not with the sound problem in mind) and guess what - on Linux sound works normally! On THE SAME LAPTOP!!!
I belive the update somehow harmed the audio drivers. I'm really fed up with it.9 -
Thunderbird mail client switched to compact mode or a new look, so I suspected that's the announced "update that many users won't like".
Googled how to revert Thunderbird to its old UI and found that people posted that question, but 4 years ago? As yesterday's UI wasn't exactly elegant and beautiful either, I'll just get used to the new one!1 -
Just got out of a meeting where they revealed to me that I will be the only dev on this project and I'll need to update the entire thing to a more modern coding standard.
But the project is 10 years old... and is massive... Why do they hate me so much? -
At work I help manage a fleet of Apple hardware that acts as our iOS build pipeline, and today I tested out MacOS Sonoma on one of the build nodes. The update went fine, but the test build failed because it didn't have sudo access for a specific command. I looked into it a little more, and it appears that the update set the sudoers file back to default! Like, why would you do that? Why would you mess with a configuration like that just for an OS update? It doesn't make any sense to me, and now I'll have to go and fix each sudoers file manually after I update the rest of the nodes. So, thanks Apple.3

Just saw that Ubuntu 19.04 extended the live patching option to desktop users and we no longer have to restart the system after a kernel upgrade.
And here we have windows which restarts after every bloody security update.
How come Microsoft is such a big shit that they can't put a feature like this in WIndows. They definitely have the resourses and the people. I think they are just lazy and don't think it's "important enough"11 -
I just had to update a package on Pypi after a number of years. It's kind of a PITA.
And then I realized, it's still better than npm. Wild. -
Let me tell you about my wonderful weekend. It all started with a game that doesn't run in wine and it ended up in the biggest nightmare of Windows Update and EFI configuration.
1 - let's boot on my Windows partition to play trackmania 2.
2 - Windows Update interrupts me while driving a track.
3 - Update keep failing over and over again.
4 - I keep trying things to fix Windows Update, but with no success.
5 - Let's try system restore, failed
6 - Let's try to do a reset. "You don't have a recovery drive". Oh, right...
7 - Let's try to upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 10, just because. Nope, "we could not determine if your pc can run Windows 10". Wait what....
8 - I guess I'll be reinstalling this trash. "Nope, can't. Don't like that partition I just formatted". Of course you can't...
9 - Had to delete the partition and let it create new ones. It created a new EFI partition. Just why???
10 - Okay that worked. Let's fix grub now.
11 - Maybe not, let's try rEFInd, because it looks fancy.
12 - After rebooting on the live USB for about 50 times and reconfiguring rEFInd without any luck, I realised the install script didn't install fs drivers for ext4. Oh, right... That's why you didn't find any Linux kernel...
13 - It can't boot windows, they're using a different EFI partition. Let's move rEFInd to the new EFI partition windows created for me.
14 - Finally everything works again. So much effort to play a freaking game without being bothered by windows update. And rEFInd abience theme looks beautiful.
I've got to say though, I learned a lot and the Arch wiki is awesome!6 -
Today I discovered that Betheme for Wordpress stores data base64 encoded in the database. Meaning you can't just do a search replace when you migrate a site to a different domain. That combined with Chrome based browsers not loading mixed security assets, but Firefox (the browser I use) does, makes for a confusing trouble ticket.
You have to change the setting to serialize sanely, then go into every post and save to update the stored data. Fortunately, the site is new so I only had one page to update, but I can't imagine the headache an established site would be to migrate.3 -
just had a bluescreen in win 10 killing my newest project and reducing it to ashes😡
for no reason
not even an error code
fuck windows and its update policies. my laptop is way slower and more instable since the new fall update. it killed some software i had to reinstall and ms changed the options for advertisement again. ive had enough of windows
im finally switching over to Linux and im going to bann win 10 on a vm -
I do like using my Mac, but it's just annoying that the terminal is linked to xcode. Why do you need to keep downloading a massive app update for xcode when I never use the app itself?!?!3

SharePoint have something called 'event receiver'. An event is triggered when the user inserts a new record in a list. That event must update a column in the same item. After a few minutes it starts to throw conflict errors while trying to update said column. Doesn't happen with every user. Also I wasn't able to reproduce this behavior in the dev environment.
So now I just recursively call the update method, passing an iterator parameter, repeating the same method until it successfully update the record. Or after 6 failures email someone to see what's going on. Just did it today and published at 7PM. Tomorrow gonna be a long day and I know I deserve it.1 -
If you think about it logically devrant is really just an RPG game with a lot of griding. You set your avatar and you play. Now eventually we're gonna get an update where an unbalanced feature is added...2

So my code works, but it's not the best way to do because there is a specific object made as a helper to do what I want to do.
Thing is, it is written nowhere. We agreed with my fellow co-workers, it's written nowhere in the developer guide provided to give the best ways to code.

Form plugin for WordPress on a seriously out of date install won't update until I update WordPress core. Fine, I update core and update the plugin and test the forms again. Form still isn't sending emails on submission. Look into forms settings. Oh look error messages, awesome!
Message: "There are 2 configuration errors"
OK, what are the errors where are the errors?
"There are two configuration errors."
Gee that's really fucking helpful, why even tell me you can see the errors if you aren't going to fucking tell me where the blasted things are. Spend 4 fucking hours trying to figure this out, checking "docs" wiki, support forums, nothing.
Finally decided to just trash the client's form plugin they were using and installed my reliable Gravity Forms.
P.S. if you are going to write code to find errors, and tell me about them, then you had better fucking tell me what the goddamned error is. There is no need to waste a developer's time trying to debug your shitty plugin because you couldn't be bothered to write a useful error handler. -
How many times have u told a company that you will not be moving forward with the interview process bc you accepted an offer... only to have them send you a rejection letter 45 mins later??? 😂😂😂 Happened to me yesterday.
Told 3 companies that.
I didn't really expect them to respond, just wanted to let them know.
First company: No response.
Second company: Wished me well and thanked me for the update.
Third company: Sent me a rejection letter.
I'm like, "You guys just couldn't resist, huh?" 😂5 -
I do IT support for a Uni.
A ticket comes in about how the site looks weird after an update.
Spend 10 minutes looking through Chrome dev view (we don't have access to backend).
Give up and assign to web team.
... Why do the people who manage the site not know anything about web development? 99% chance it's a just a quick CSS fix. -
Just updated to ( lol was forced to update to, because Microsoft doesn't give a fuck about your internet plans ) windows 10 build 1809 ( shitbox ) which erased my documents folder, uninstalled some of my games ( The only reason I was still using windows) and uninstalled my graphics driver. What did those guys smoke while writing the code for this update???!!!!! I mean if this is a work of some notorious guy who is just trying to create chaos then kudos, but this update didn't leave a choice to permanently switch to linux.3

Spent half a day trying to figure out why a package wasn't working, was telling me the properties provided weren't known (typically meaning I forgot to include it at a module level).
Nope. The package owners just updated the property names and didn't update their documentation 🙃
how's your day going? -
just got a "privilege update" now i'm responsible for not only my software but for the webservers too...thanks admin guys...now i have more bullshit to deal with1

Try bullet journaling.
Just set a phone alert to update it before bed and when you wake up (to refresh your memory and jot down things you forgot).
And prioritize tasks. You can mark some tasks for later, even for a different month.
Some people like digital organizers (and I use those too) but I like pen and paper. YMMV1 -
paying for windows is shit. I've a PC which i keep updated. it has corrupted the drives like 2 times in 3 years and the motherboard replaced twice cuz' the fucking BIOS update didn't take. I've a pirated windows 7 running on a PC that was bought in 2012, still no issues in 11 years. 11 fucking. Just lost 2 weeks of work 🥲.2

Fuck Kibana and their latest update. Want to change timeframes? 5 fucking clicks to get there. Changed the query and the timerange? 'update' will only have you looking at the new timerange for the old query which is confusing as fuck if you don't realise it. So you need to click 'update' a second time.
So many times i've been staring at the wrong logs after changing correlation ID and time range just pulling out grey hairs trying to understand what the fuck is going on. -
It's pain in the ass, when you finally managed to free enough memory to keep your android os up-to-date and just a few minutes after update restart getting a message that there is an os update, which needs another 200mb.
It's a never-ending torture..4 -
I always forget it's a bad idea to run queries in an "edit table" view in SSMS. Just blew up my table cause it decided to add an unwanted cross join in my update statement.
Ran it in a fresh query window and it worked fine. -
I'm currently starting to develop a simple web app to access a database, just simple read, write, update stuff. Doesn't need to be fancy or anything, just work.
Now I asked a PHP dev I know for help and he told me I should use Symfony and Easy Admin Bundle. I'm not sure rn if it'd be worth it to get to know how to work with frameworks or not. What do you guys think?
Btw, I'm not planning on doing a lot more web development.3 -
Perforce just deleted all my work from yesterday and today. Apparently using the 'update branch mapping' feature is a bad idea3

I don't know why it happen. Windows update then Windows create a TEMP Users Folders, put all the documents/download/etc location (path) into one of those temps users folder that was just created. Hopefully my clients didn't lose their files, since the Good users folder was still there.
Okay now Microsoft, listen, it's okay to update your OS. It certainly need it. BUT HOW THE FUCK WOULD YOU CREATE A NEW USERS AND CHANGE THE PATH OF PERSONAL FILES! Thumb up! At least those file were not erased... -
windows 10 update is the last straw that pushes me to get a mac. Just spent 2 hours trying to download an undownloadable update and unstuck a stuck update without luck. Seriously dealing w ms product is the most frustrating thing in the world ever5

When you just want to do a simple "brew install apache-flink" and you come to find out the sad realization that your Xcode is outdated and it's either going to be 100 years to update it or delete the godforsaken app altogether (only takes about 50 years)

TryShift.com - I got this app hoping to consolidate my gmail accounts into a single place. I've been using it for months (maybe a year now) and I just can't see why anymore lol.
1) It logs me out every week or so and dashlane can't autofill my password from within the app so I have to go copy-paste it.
2) The app is basically just a browser
3) There are bugs and one of them just started with the only feature worth using the app for (unread email count in the mac osx dock)
4) The app blocks my macbook from restarting
5) The app won't update when I click "Update & Restart". I have to quit it manually and often it still won't update when I open it again.
UGH! Just uninstalled, opened both my gmail accounts in chrome, and sighed from relief.9 -
A new dev hire, just said that after a Windows update all her files, settings, are deleted. Thankfully it was still in recycle bin. I don't know who's at fault, but I had a fix to this problem.
Linux. Passed her the ubuntu installer USB key.6 -
Rant/ Question.
I've lost count how many times windows has decided to wake itself up from sleep mode to update. Sometimes it doesn't even update, I will be laying in bed and it will turn on, I will then have to sit up for half an hour waiting for it to finish (otherwise my pc will just be on all night) then when it is finally done, I will get up and go to turn it off and it says "Turn off and update" and need to update again.
To make it worse, it restarts itself while updating, so all the stuff I wanted to keep open by putting it in sleep mode will be gone.
Is there any way to prevent windows from doing this update during sleep mode? If not I am going to need to completely turn off my PCs power when it is in sleep mode, which it just a pain for me.1 -
Lol all my creations are useless to a good extent. I work on them just for practice. Here is a short list of them.
1) c program for every kind of sorting algo
2) stack implementation for checking paranthesis and prefix postfix shit in java
3) Treeview implemention with basic utils like create, update, delete in python -
Yet another Windows 10 rant:
Since hibernation is broken (just locks the screen), I put my computer to sleep and went to bed. After a few minutes, IT STARTS UP.
So I disable hybrid sleep, wake timers, Update, etc. Same thing.
I try again... This time, it starts up too, but DOESN'T EVEN RESTORE!!
And this is a month-old install with latest update and no fishy drivers.
Windows really does hate me.1 -
I don't know maybe it's just me, but Mac asking if i want to update softwares just distracts me so much.
Also you can only disable it for a day, so after that it will ask you again... :/
Also chances are that I'm just dumb and couldn't find a way to disable it. :D Also open offices, no idea who though that it's a good idea1 -
The one time I need to use Windows, it decides to update by itself and now I'm just sitting here, wasting my time because I can't do anything.
It even says 'This will take a while'
Apparently I can browse dr for a while now thdn3 -
Does someone remember this update years ago in the magento community edition that added a file in the root web directory that just printed all database credentials to the browser?
-
I asked a team member about a simple update for a customer's country/state code and he started saying we should build an event handler and publish and event and I'm like "woah woah... this is before they're engaged."
Thankfully he said, in that case, my original idea of just handling the update is correct. Phew ... that could have been way more complicated than it needed to be.1 -
Pamac.
I like it. It's simple and better than that "discover" software center thing.
But omg do I hate pamac. Not even talking about what it caused to the AUR. I'm talking about automatic full system updates.
It's so annoying. I'm working on something, have like 20 open windows where I'm doing something. I just need that ONE app to continue. So I install it using pamac, boom. 2GB of updates and I can't even skip it. Alright, I wait.
When it finally finished I tried continuing with what I was doing, but nah. Some nvidia driver update broke my stuff and I have to reboot my system.
That's very annoying. Remember, I still have all my work open, including one app which takes a stupid amount of setup when starting. I really don't wanna have to reboot at that point. But I have to.
So I open the "windows button menu" (don't know the name, but you know what I mean) and click restart. It gives me an error. Probably updated some critical thing relating to the reboot menu which broke it.
(I know I can just use the terminal to reboot, but before I do I had to make this post.)
This isn't a one time thing. This has happened to me twice before. What really makes me mad is that I can't turn full updates off. There would be a really simple fix to all of this:
When installing an app, check for updates and just ask the user if they want to update everything, or just install this app now (and update the dependencies for it).
I understand that I have to update my system, but just let me finish my work first, okay? Just update when I'm done. It would also be nice to have an extra button for "Update and shutdown" without going the Windows route and forcing updates.
While I'm on the topic of windows, I used Windows 8 once on a laptop belonging to a family member. I was in the proccess of doing something when it just blacked out, stopped all apps and started installing updates. Not even a warning. That's just one of the reasons I'll never even consider switching to Windows.
(Using Arch with KDE btw.)6 -
Whatever Windows 10 update that ran on my labtop last night has it slower than fuckety fucking fucked up glacial icebergs. Just a heads up to anybody who doesn't wish to wait for five minutes, go do some chores, only to return to the room to discover the connection timed out. If you can prevent this update from kicking in for a few days until they work the bugs out, do. I perish the thought of millions of devs weeping into their bevvies as projects stall, customers become stroppy, and whole nations crumble... and the fucking screen still hasn't defaulted to the next one!2

Since the new update I have many issues with loading oft rants.
When I click on a rant, the devRant Logo Smiley Shows up for several seconds, than it Just disappears. And then nothing Happens.
Have to Go Back again, and Back again and sometimes also Close the App before the rant is loading again.
Is it only me?7 -
A TRIBUTE TO CODERS WHO JUST STARTED MAKING DISCORD BOTS USING PYTHON WITH PYTHON 3.9
When you just got the hype of making Discord Bots using Python ...
You update to Python 3.9 ... And then Go to CMD (for windows users) and type ... "pip install discord.py" ... You are very happy ... thinking finally You can add your custom bot to your server and then ... even pip tells you that you are noob at discord.py -
I use a Windows 10 OS and the browser popup sometime (not always so it hard to debug) when I open my computer.
Does the browser goes to other website? No the browser just show default page.
Is it a malware?I always keep my update AV so I am not sure.13 -

Update of previous post
I just got assigned to a project.
Project-specific training is designed to take up to 20 days.
I got materials, videos, and a person who is in this project for a long time to supervise training and introduce me to the project.
Only problem is that the project apparently uses 5 years old version of base framework. -
Windows update been 27% done for a veery long tim... Ah... Now it was don... No, just restarted... 30% now... Hrmf... Not just annoying, it taunts me as well!
