Boi did I forget what a horror is to deal with Wndows...

I just wanted to shutdown a laptop to replace the SSD and a wifi card. Prepared everything, clicked on the [start] and there were only "Update and *" options. Wha the hell I thought, I could spare a few minutes. It's just a software update - should not take long!

Little did I know...
That was 45 minutes ago and It's still shutting down. And I'm just sitting with that screwdrived in my hand, looking at that blue screen and waiting. I feel stupid

UPDATE: I gave up. Long-pressed the POWER button. que sera, sera, right?

Lights go out. I press POWER again to boot it back up (forgot to save smth else). And it boots up back to the "SHUTTING fucking DOWN" AGAIN!!!

gpedit.msc -> Computer config -> Administrative bullshit -> Windows Update -> good luck some option makes you able to disable automatic download of updates altogether

@netikras If you set your connection to metered it wont do an update. There is also a way to make all new connections default to metered.

@Demolishun Does it prevent installation of already downloaded updates? Because those have been downloaded a while ago. It's not my laptop :)

Then go through and disable, or limit as much as possible auto updates.

I just can’t figure HOW ? I have 3 PCs at work (all win10) (Ranging from a Dell workstation to HP Specter laptop and a custom build core i5 (we use for gaming only)).

2 Windows pc at home (one Win 10, One Windows Server 2012 R2). 2 surfaces pro (3d generation). And one SurfaceRT first generation. I’ll throw in a Lumia 920xl (Retired, replaced by worst phone I’ve used so far : Galaxy S10. And BTW EVERY fucking Android update is a problem. Each update breaks something).
And in the last year I NEVER experienced ANY update problems on any of these devices (Except Android ofc). Yes, even SurfaceRT is still updating from time to time.

How is it not working for you all ?
All auto updates are enabled; I don’t even notice them.

@NoToJavaScript IDK.. Maybe these problems find me, not the other way around.. But they are very real!

One funny thing I've noticed about windows updates while installing the new setup. Windows downloads updates as a batch. If either of them fails to download -- retrying will force downloading of ALL the updates again.

If either of them fails to install -- all the Pending Install changes to Downloading.

Why not use a cache...?

Old days windows is unsecure. Currently days windows does updates. People always!

Oh mind you, Windows "shut down" doesn't actually shut down anymore. It suspends to disk. I know. If you want to shut down, you need to reboot and bail during the startup

@epse it's on by default to make you think Win10 (either from whatever to Win10 or from build to build) magically made your PC faster, as shutdown times aren't often monitored since people get up and walk away when it's shutting down, yet people are usually actively waiting for their PCs to start up. People are actively taught the buttons on their machine only make it do things, but if they touch them when it's on, it'll explode or some shit, despite just doing ACPI standard shutdown shit, so *of course* they're not gonna label it "half shut-down, half not" as that'd be too hard for end users to understand.

Gahh, just ran into this shit on my vm. I finally set it to metered with a data limit of 1MB/month. I actually had fucking work to do.

@shoop It does it for me. Do you think I'm too fucking incompetent to disable a god damn button? Also, it doesn't take two minutes if you have to literally mess with permissions to not have your OS develop sentience and change its own settings. How the hell is this not a simple button switch like in any functioning OS?
This is why I prefer my Manjaro install.

And once more, since you seem to not be understanding my comments, THE BUTTONS THAT DISABLE SYSTEM UPDATES ARE TOGGLED ON AGAIN AFTER EVERY. MAJOR. UPDATE. I WILL NOT MESS WITH FUCKING SYSTEM PERMISSIONS TO TURN THEN OFF PERMANENTLY.
