Both Conservancy and the Git project are aware that the initial branch name, ‘master’, is offensive to some people and we empathize with those hurt by the use of that term.

Offensive my butt. It's not like any developer alive today had experienced the life of a slave. It's all in the past. Should I get offended by imperial Japanese flag?

I'm Master of Science, I think science should get offended.

    It's not offensive.

I'll always ask the question. What does master refer to?

I don't care if a person gets triggered on a word that has an actual definition. If they don't like it, then don't use it.

I prefer to use master because >30 of my pipelines use it and it refers to the master record. You know, the source of truth. I don't care what they've read online about how the originating docs were based on another VCS that used slave.

Main is such a generic term that can mean anything. At least with master you know that nothing else should be trusted. White label it as main and who knows what it is. Main branch? Main feature? Main trunk? Main man?

No...I don't think I will change it. And when I'm forced to not use "master" anymore, I'll use 🤡

Yes, you can use emojis as branch names on GitHub. I swear to God, I'll rewrite every single fucking pipeline to use the god damned clown just to prove a fucking point that definition and context is important when identifying the meaning of a word.

it's only offensive if you're the kind of garbage that finds everything offensive.

i find breaking all existing scripts that do stuff to the master-branch - for no reason except excessive wokeness - very offensive, and since it takes time to fix them: objectively harmful.

    I’m tired of this shit.
I’m not even that annoyed about the loud minority snowflakes that actually find master offensive, anymore.
They can be offended, for stupid reasons, but it’s ok.
I’m more annoyed by all the other managers and CTOs and what not who support this shit by hypocritically apologizing about using master and promising to make sure that it will be changed. And all the companies that are doing it too to maintain their image.
    😣

@theKarlisK I hate how accurate this is.

The desire for something no matter the absurdity of it is just insanity.

It's almost as bad as weebs pretending they have a kawaii big bosomed anime gf.

At this point both are just pathetic cries for help.

Let's just call it "Protagonist" branch, and the other branches can be "Sidekicks"

@theKarlisK And issues can be "plot holes"

When I was CTO, I forced everyone to use master. Didn't want to deal with pipelines potentially failing over a woefully stupid non issue.

Oh, God, please... I am losing hope in humanity.

"The music-industry term 'master recording' derives from 'master/ slave' terminology and must be stopped, says attorney Dina LaPolt." -variety.com

"The origins of the term are unclear, but some brokers nonetheless find it offensive and inappropriate. The Houston Association of Realtors was the first industry group to decide to stop using “master bedroom” in late June, after some members expressed concerns that it could be perceived as racist or sexist." - nytimes.com

Like any other infectious disease, stupidity spreads. 😷
