A friend got a "new" (several years old) pc from an other friend. The pc made strange noises, so I open it and found a little speaker connected to the USB pins on the mainboard. Not an USB speaker but a simple mini speaker with two cables (see the picture). Why would someone do this?

Windows 10 wanted to restart my XPS due to some updates, said will do it during idle hours but I still restarted. Boots back , couldn't. Tried again, same. Removed all USB devices , HDMI monitor, mini display monitor , still no luck. Removed power cable & it starts.

Slowly and carefully added all back one by one. Working for now ...

My uncle wants me to get a faster OS on this (I'm thinking android since its touch screen) he wants to embed it in his car as a GPS computer (older car) he's an actual mechanic don't worry lol so he won't fuck up any car wiring

But this monster doesn't have a USB-A it has usb-mini. Oof. Wish me luck while I try to figure this out

New job, new laptop, which happens to be 2k euro MS surface crap.
It comes with win10 S which only allows store apps to be installed, so yeah no making bootable linux for me untill windows drag my ballsack through 2 hours of updating to a pro version.

Wanted to do a nice sweet new debian on it - nope, keyboard not supported in the installation.
I restart...and the fucker completely denied me untill it does another update, which is taking an hour..for now.

And wtf only one usb and mini dp port? In such an expensive laptop?
Cant even plugin my display untill my dock arrives.

Guess I'll have to suck it up and get used to windows for developing for now.

Very excited, got my raspberry pi zero working over usb finally, gotta admit it took me a while to figure it out that the ifconfig IP assigned to the interface established isn't actually the raspberry pi's (seriously you don't want to see how far the visited google links go for all variations of "how to setup the otg ssh connection"), that only came to me once I was able to find the mini-hdmi to hdmi cable, before that it was a pure shitfest:

First I just tried all sort of configs, but the raspberry pi kept denying the ssh connection, slammed the microsd into my bigger Pi, even multiple times ran raspi-config, forced ssh to start in all possible ways, nothing.

Then I tried to use the TV-output on it together with my old small portable tv to maybe see some error-logs or the ssh not starting on the zero for whatever reason, even flashed a 2016 image thinking it is stretchs fault for not working, but then my fucking soldering iron cable disappeared, tried to quickly create my own, but that failed cause the 3.5mm connector it uses is different from the ones I had available, so I macgyvered a sketchy ass lose connection with male headers sticking through from the bottom and being sticked against the board with a female end on top, but the TV output wouldn't work, even with proper config options, so I gave up.

Some days later I've found the cable, connected it and realized the fucking IP it gets assigned is totally different from the interface, well fuck my life.

Atleast now I can make a clean image of that microSD and setup the portable laravel development raspi as I wanted, can't wait to try it once I get more time to fully set it up - btw even the internet bridge worked right out of the box, so I can easily use my laptops internet connection on the zero.

Cleaning up my desk at the office today. As I'm sure is the case with most of us, I have a draw that's full of old technical crap that's not currently in use (mice, charging cables, USB hubs, routers, access points, cameras, old phones and iPads, you get the idea).

Found out that not only do I have an extra Mini-DVI to HDMI dongle; I apparently have 3 of them. That's more than I've got available Mini-DVI ports to begin with.

My main problem with programming on android phones(not for android) is it's keyboard, almost none of default layouts don't have the needed buttons(i.e. ; [ ] ( ) ...), I managed to find a good one "Hacker's Keyboard", 5 rows almost every button(even shift, ctrl and arrow keys). But here's the problem with this: it's buttons width is very low on portrait mode, on landscape, even if you're used to lanscape typing, you won't be able to see shit because it's covering most of screen.
"Hey, what about an external keyboard", well it's not totally a bad idea, but you would need a stand for your phone, and if it's connecting via usb and not bt, you have to buy a usb2[yourPort] convertion, besides I want to hold my phone while typing "How about you make you make your own bt/usb attachable mini keyboard for your phone.", Wow that's a very good idea, it would take maybe a year to make it, but maybe instead of making the whole thing myself I can buy a mini keyboard and make the attaching part myself, it can't be THAT hard, right? Need a 3D printer(√), need time(have alot of it), need to design it(no problem), now start... uhhh nevermind, who am I kiddin', I won't be able to make such a thing, just use that "Hacker's Keyboard".

So I'm making some changes to my setup. I'm relieving my current router from its duties and retiring it as a mini PC for my desktop setup. And I got my hands on a Dell Optiplex that will become my new router.

Now, firstly, the Optiplex came w/o a wifi antenna. I booted it up into a LinuxMint install USB for the first time and didn't expect much from it, but to my surprise, I got a popup: "There are wifi networks available". At that spot there was also my Fenvi PCI wifi card's antenna of my current (soon-to-be-previous) PC and it was barely seeing any wifi, and there came Optiplex with NO antenna attached to it and it managed to maintain stronger and more stable signal. wtf....

Alright, it's Fenvi, it's chinese -- there's probably not much I should expect from it.

Then I hooked it up right next to my current router with an external USB wifi adapter having 4x6dBi antennas on it, serving as my current wifi AP. Trying out hostapd configs, searching for the right channels,... should I test it? Naah, it still doesn't have an antenna - it won't reach my laptop. Meeh, for shits and giggles! `hostapd -d /etc/hostapd/hostapd_custom.conf`, on my lappy `nmcli d wifi rescan; sleep 5; nmcli d wifi` and... wtf... To my surprise, the AP was there! A thick wall away, no antenna whatsoever, and I still could connect to that Optiplex AP and post this rant!

What magic is this??? I'm now a bit concerned about ordering an antenna for it - I'm worried it could either worsen the signal or make it so strong that it'll fry my brains overnight.
