Creating gigantic pullrequests...

One thing i noticed... People on devrant start to ask the same questions, over and over again. Most of them because they are new.
- OSX vs Linux vs Windows
- Which IDE?
- Mac vs PC
- Tabs vs Spaces

I know that these questioned can be elaborated in depth for eternity, but it's just the same questions with the same answers all over again.

This whole thing has a DarkSouls-esque feeling where the same shit just happens over and over again until you go insane and become part of the world, or you keep watching things repeating themselves.

I'm not saying that some questions do not deserve a review or a second look but it just feels like browsing over the same things every day with a few unique rants and questions in between every now and then.

1) Helping my girlfriend getting her graduation.
2) Maxing out my Cassette collection
3) Repairing my Gameboy
4) Growing my plants, especially my Carolina Reaper chili
5) Visiting my friends across the country
6) Lots of things that might or might not be illegal but fun

Constantly touching the display of my laptop, or any display for that matter.

It drives me up a fucking wall.

1. None of these devices support touch
2. You can point the thing out with your finger without touching the glass / plastic. Or just use my damn mouse.
3. Seeing the smears all over my screen is annoying as hell. I always find a new smudge and it's irritating.

Ok bois it's IDE / Text Editor time again.

I have had my fair share of usage with VSCode and i have been using VIM for over a year now.

With Vim i miss intellisense, class lookups etc.

VSCode doesn't provide the macro abilities i like in VIM and also doesn't support every edge case of file (giant files for instance).

Now i am at a certain dilemma. Do i use VSCode? Vim?

I am seriously considering trying emacs, but i don't know much about it.

What is your take on this?
Please respect each others choice, i don't want another fucking IDE religion war

Okay, honst question:
What the fuck is up with all that self deprecation?
I am not talking about the usual irony that comes with certain stereotypes about being a developer.

I am talking about people telling themselves that they are unable to socialize, find a girlfriend or generally justifying bad things just because they belong to a certain group.

It's not the 80s. Software devs and nerds in general are not all social outcasts anymore. I don't understand how some people can just "accept their fate as a dev" and act as if anything is keeping them away from social success.

What's your take on this issue?

Not a Story about an actual hack, but a story about people being dumb and using hacks as an excuse.

A few weeks ago my little cousin would reach out to me because "his Account was hacked...". Supposedly his League of Legends account was hacked by a guy of his own age (14) and this guy was boasting about it.

So i asked the usual things: "Has the email account been hijacked? Did anyone know about details to your acvount access? Etc..."

Turns out that one if his "friends" knew his password and username, but suppsedly erased these Informationen. And that was the part i didn't buy.

This was the point where he lost. Just because i am a programmer does not mean i can retrieve an account he lost because of a dumb mistake that could have easily been avoided. And that guy who was boasting about hacking LoL Account was coincidentally freinds with the friend who had the user credentials and password.

Moral of the Story? The biggest security weakness is almost always the user or a human in between...

Any vim devs here that code in dotnet?
I use nvim and have tried and tried again to set up proper intellisense and debugging with omnisharp but it just doesn't want to work properly.

Anyone having suggestions / alternatives?

You know what really grinds my gears more than anything else? Not having anything to work on at work.

That might sound like the most german thing to say but bear with me for a second.

Even though i am almost one year into my job as a junior dev, i consider myself and i probably am very new to the coding world. And even if i weren't new i would still have to continuously learn and improve. And every time i just sit in front of my working station, with nothing to do, i'd rather figure out an incredibly tedious bug, learn lisp or deal with a shitty framework.

Most of the time i don't know what to do. I improve my workflow with some bash-scripts and aliases, i read into the details of certain tools but at the end of it, i can't really get into something deeper and get value out of it because actual work might just be around the corner...

When debugging and testing programs with huge databases, i acidentally start breaking Records in this company.
Had my biggest curl command with 5000 UUIDs (which just made my terminal crash, never happened before), my longest curl request (over an hour) and now Github ... what were your most ridiculous proportions in coding?

I am seeing a trend on here, where people dismiss a technology based upon their experience that they cannot use it first try, even though they clearly lack experience or knowledge about the proper usage.

Also people seemingly tend to imply self explanatory at various topics ranging from relatable broadly known experiences to small nieche opinions.

How is that? Since when do people, especially programmers, think they do not need to explain their viewpoint, even though there is not a clear indicator as to why? Stating an opinion without any backup to the claim is just a void call in the wind. Of course i know that user X thinks that Y is his or her opinion. But what good does it do when i can't relate / understand or discuss this opinion?

The absolute worst experience i have ever had with a dev technology was a mixture between notepad, pgeLua and a PSP.

Back in 2010, i coded a game called "ReapeR ValleY" for PSP (homebrew). I had no idea what an ide was and i have never really coded before that.
That resulted in a 1500+ line code that in a single file written in notepad. The performance was horrible since it just ran through the same lines of code over and over again with arrays filling up and flowing over with data.
The entire game was written in pgeLua (a supposedly more game friendly version of Lua) and ran on the PSP.
The PSP needed to be overclocked in order to run the Game smoothly. I had to restart the entire PSP when the game crashed and i already installed a custom bootscreen that basically shortened the time to boot.

You can still find the game online hosted on various websites. It was my very first and unexperienced attempt at coding, but it worked.

Moral of the story: you can code with just about anything, but when you don't inform yourself about IDEs, frameworks and such, it might be painful.

... also Notepad is pure brain pain to code in.

Started using Vim and the more i use it, the more using regular editors feels like a waste of time.

What exactly is the purpose of dev rant?
1. Devs and aspiring devs ranting about software development related things

2. Devs and aspiring devs ranting about anything

3. Anyone ranting about anything

4. Devs posting literally anything, not even ranting

5. Literally anyone posting anything

I am not a purist nor an elitist, but my opinion about this is pretty cut clear. I would see devrant as an app to provide a platform for Devs to rant about dev things. Easy as that.

The stuff i see popping up here and there is absolutely not related to anything Software development, nor would it have any other reason to be posted on such a platform. I am not saying you need to have a certain quality or that there need to be standards but sometimes i just see people advocating for the most outrageously vapid and non dev related things.

What is your stance?
Did i miss the purpose of this app?
