The worst thing about being a dev is after a while your reaction to every problem is this: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Or this: ಠ_ಠ7 -
Client: the platform isn't sending emails
Dev: I'll look into it
(Finds all emails are being sent without issue)
Client: I just tested and I'm not receiving emails. This is obviously a site wide bug and I'm upping the priority to "Critical". I'm also getting everyone over here involved.
(Looks into clients account)
Dev: you didn't turn the setting on to allow emails to be sent to you.
Client: this is still a site wide bug that is affecting everyone.
(Provides screenshots showing emails are being sent and opened. Client closes ticket and doesn't respond anymore)11 -
Being a dev by day and a simracer by night. I made a skin because I wanted to see what devRant would look like on a race car.14
-
Roughly 180 days, 5 months and 29 days, 4,320 hours, 259,200 minutes, I devoted myself to a client project. I missed family outings with my daughter and my wife. People started asking my wife if we had broken up. My daughter became accustomed to daddy not being around and playing with her. Sometimes only sleeping 4 hours, I would figure out solutions to problems in my sleep and force myself to wake and put them into action. My relationship with my wife became very fragile and unstable. I knew I had to change but I just needed a little bit more time to complete this client project.
Finally, the project was ending there was light at the end of the tunnel. I “git add –-all && git status” everything looked good. I then “git commit -m “v1.0 release candidate && git push beanstalk master”
I deployed the app to the staging server where I performed my deployment steps. Everything was good. I signed-up as a new user, I upload a bunch different files types with different sizes, completed my profile and logged out. I emailed the client to arrange a time to speak remotely.
“Hello” says the client “How are you” I replied. “Great, lets begin” urged the client. I recited the apps url out to the client. The client creates a new account and tries to upload a file. The app spews a bunch of error messages on the screen.
The client says
“Merlin – I do not think you really applied yourself to this project. The first test we do and it fails. If you do not have the time to do my project properly please just say so now, so I can find somebody else who can”
I FREAKED THE FUCKOUT on the client!!!!!!! and nearly hung up. My wife was right next to and she was absolutely gobsmacked. I sat back and thought to myself “These fuckers don’t get it”. All that suffering for nothing!
Thanks for reading my rant….
BTW: I did finish the project, the client was amazed on how the app worked and it is has become an indispensable tool for their employees.19 -
Well guys it was nice being dev while it lasted. Reevaluated my life and decided to travel the vast world and become a Pokemon master.7
-
For those that celebrate Halloween, and for those that can simply appreciate when being a dev IS life... :)11
-
Me: hey dev, my in-app purchase isn't reflected on other phones with your app
Dev: *cricket noises*
About a week later...
Google Play: an update for this app is available
20 minutes later...
Dev: nope, that isn't an issue.
You updated the app minutes ago after being silent for so long. No mention of it being fixed in the changelog, no mention of it being fixed in the reply.. nothing. But I'll eat my hat if you didn't silently add it in and shoved it under the rug. Dickhead.
At least the issue doesn't exist.. anymore.
Please don't be like that...6 -
!dev
Just found out my house's heating system relies on this. A button, being held down by a bolt held by a zip tie. Who in their right mind looked at this, was like "this is fine" and left it there.
My dad, apparently.10 -
So I moved from being the TL of a small team to a member of another team a month ago.
A dev from the old team sent me this today morning. He also sent some examples of what he found "cool", and tbh I'm pretty proud of those modules. I tried being very modest there, but I'm very happy 😅8 -
The best part of being a dev?
Want something?
It doesn't exist?
Build it yourself!
It feels like a superpower. :D2 -
The best part of being a dev?
You can be a nerd, you can dress lousy, you got all those fancy tech you can work with, it's diverse, it's fun. And on top of that, it's not even remotely hard to find a job and get payed well.8 -
Best part of being a dev?
The feeling when everything is going so well that you start suspecting that something is wrong.1 -
You know your idea was shit when you ask a freelance dev to make it for you, get denied and then see your idea being ranted about on devrant...7
-
Being told I’m not experienced enough to get a senior dev job I interviewed for.
Even though I aced the first 4 interview rounds, the tech test feedback was “the best solution they had ever seen”, and I’ve been a senior dev for 25 years.
Time wasting assholes.3 -
There are a lot of things that could rank up as the worst about being a dev, such as recurring meetings, documentation, shitty requirements, pm gnats, Monday, etc...but something that truly ruins it all is NO INTERNET CONNECTION.5
-
Best part of being a dev?
The perceived ability to fix ANY electronic device owned by friends and family.
"So you work with computers? Any idea what's wrong with my toaster?"7 -
The worst part of being a Dev? The lonely feeling when you are the only one who likes to develop in your group of friends5
-
Now I am not a web dev but I just stumbled upon Electron and envied all web devs.Seems fun being a web dev20
-
Best part of being a dev :
You get to live the stereotype. "She doesn't talk much, she is always on her laptop - coding, always has headphones on. Too much of a geek. Let's not invite her to a party. "
No awkward "Uh , I cant come. " Yay! B-)2 -
Best part of being a dev ?
You don't need college degree.
You will never get bored even if you are alone.
You can learn everything yourself, online.
Last but not the least, Being the dev is awesome in itself. :)5 -
I hope they make an anime about being a dev and the enemy is the deadline.
Dev: ill use this coding technique number 111
Deadline: impossible
Insert explosion effect here9 -
Beating https://regexcrossword.com/ felt good.
But I have to admit: I could not beat the last one without breakpoint in the validation JS code. ;)
Being a web dev actually proved useful - free hinting system!5 -
Using devRant.
I have learnt a lot from everyone. I didn't even realise before that being a dev can be sooo awesome.
Thanks @dfox, @trogus.2 -
Worst part of being a dev:
Writing down an issue in the ticket system for somebody else took longer then fixing the issue yourself.2 -
Promotions? What are those.
Every title I have gained has been out of necessity of needing someone to work on stack "X".
It usually goes something like:
Dev: I quit
Management: oh shit, we need another dev 🤔oh @C0D4 can do it until we find a replacement.
@C0D4: fuck, I don't know anything about this stack.
Management: we didn't find a replacement, this thing is yours now, here's a pay bump for your efforts.
@C0D4: I swear they'll regret all these projects being managed by a single dev 1 day.7 -
The relentless feeling that slowly has over taken my waking life. The feeling that if I am not coding, learning or becoming better at coding I am wasting my time. I can't even watch movies anymore without reading articles. This is the worst thing about being a Dev, how when you are a dev you are nothing else.
At least for me, not sure how common this feeling is.10 -
Worst part of being a dev is the expectation to work whenever / wherever and ultimately cover your bosses ass when they set a ridiculous deadline without consulting you. But if you miss the deadline it's your fault, right.
-
Worst part of being a dev?
The last 10% of a project.
Being in beta, gathering feed back, sorting through opinions and user preferences. All that takes forever compared to the first 90%.
📈🗓❗️❗️❗️2 -
Manager: You know you really shouldn’t pay off your mortgage faster than you absolutely have to. It’s the cheapest money you’ll ever get!
Dev: I’d rather work towards being debt free. Besides my RRSP (401k) is already maxed out
Manager: RRSPs are a scam! TFSAs (Roth IRAs) are way better
Dev: My TFSA is maxed out too
Manager: 😡 You still shouldn’t pay off your mortgage!
Dev: …16 -
Worst thing of being a dev: in family meetings, being asked by EVERYONE to fix their computers or check that weird issue in their smartphones4
-
When the Product Owner is so angry about Agile that he removes all the Dev team from JIRA?!?! Then has a tantrum about nothing being delivered.... hmmm... because, mate, we can read your flipping mind!9
-
Worst thing about being a dev is being interrupted when your in the middle of a lot of mental juggling... "Where was I?... Dammit"2
-
Worst security issue : being able to make a money transfer with no auth and changing freely the bank account in the POST params...
Dev excuse : "I didn't know my job was also to take care about security."2 -
Night at my girlfriend family... to celebrate both her and her sister birthday...
Offensive comments, jokes and pure irrespect about being a dev, having a beard and being quiet, from the guests.
Her actual family is really nice.
I swear... if I hear one more joke about my beard!
The only interesting person, her aunt, just left...
Back to stupid jokes and fake laughs.7 -
My first dev job didn't start out as a job. I started out writing a database querying program just to see if I could do it, and the software ended up being purchased, and me along with it! Seems like such a long time ago now...
-
Just waiting for the day were a head hunter mail starts with: "We saw your profile on devRant and found it very interesting how you comment your daily anger while being a dev....."3
-
My department is focused solely on web development. Of course we are part of the major portion of I.T
The entire I.T department got acknowledged for a very important piece of software. That I wrote.
The ceremony in which we were being recognized did not listed MY department, no, they listed the ENTIRETY of I.T.
Thing is, if this product was not delivered, then I was told that the blame would be MINE (I am speaking as the head of my department) but apparently if it succeeded (which it did) it is to be attributed to people that were not even involved in the project.
My employees tried calming me down when I got upset, one of them stated that it was not even our department's effort, but mine alone. And yes, I was the one that developed the solution. By myself, with complete testing, staging, the whole works. Everything, developed by me. BUT my employees held the entire department down while I was behind close doors developing this solution.
I was fucking upset, more so because my director sent an email thanking the entire I.T department for this "win"
I asked him through or messaging service if he could point out to me who else was involved, since I did not know of anyone else that did absolutely anything in this process other than myself and my guys.
Maybe the output of my program was parsed by another I.T department and something happened from it, maybe the money generated by the application (obscene amounts of it btw) were used to add more to the infrastructure etc, who knows, but as far as I know, you cannot say "if this fails it is on you" just for them to later on thank people that were not involved in the project.
This is why I would gladly move on to a different field. I don't want to be patted on the back constantly, I know how fucking good I am at what I do. But if I do something amazing I do not want to see those efforts being given to someone else.
The dev world is usually a thankless industry, but if thanks are given, then I want the sole credit.
If I am winning or loosing I want the whole fucking credit and you can be any more gangstah than that.10 -
Best part to being a dev? Attention 😼
(Perks (or struggle depending on how you see it) of being a female dev)11 -
Worst part of being a dev must be working with people who are not willing to change behavior because of arrogance. Oh - and then the constant OS wars talk. It really needs to stop. Like... Now5
-
nothing like being interviewed by non-devs for a dev role. the words experience and samples go right out the window and all they care about is do you have a degree because a piece of paper proves you can code and not your actual code. smh3
-
The worst thing about being a dev is explaining to these fucktards that facebook can't be hacked.
But what is even worse, is when these dipshits say that i am a bad dev for not hacking facebook for them.
Use that big stupid head to sometimes think straight and stop being a little twat.3 -
After 'Dev' deployed a service using Azure ServiceBus, a particular queue/client was receiving errors.
Dev: "Looking at the logs, client is getting faulted."
Me: 'What is the error being logged?'
Dev: 'Client is faulted'
Me: 'No, that is our error when the client is either unable to connect or there is an exception in the middle of sending a message. What is the exception from Azure?'
Dev: 'Client is faulted. That's it. I'm going to have to re-engineer the code to implement a retry policy.'
<OK, I smell someone cooking up some solution finding, so I dig into the logs a little further>
Me: "Looks like an invalid connection string. The actual exception being thrown and logged is from the Azure client connection string builder. The value cannot be null."
Dev: "No, I'm looking right at the connection string in the config. Looks fine."
Me: "Looks correct on your machine, but what is actually being deployed to the server?"
<I could tell he was getting agitated>
<Dev clicks around, about 10 min. later>
Dev: "Aha!..I found it. The connection string in the config on the main branch is wrong, in fact, the entry is missing."
<dev fixes, re-deploys, life is good, I document the error and the root cause>
Boss: "Great job Dev."
*sigh* ..go teamwork?3 -
the dev team freaked our boss out by being overly nice and polite to him for a whole day .
Normally we're pretty laid back and tease one another, so he was pretty worried.
You know you have an awesome and tight-knit team when your boss threatens to fire all of you for being too nice and you can laugh about it.
#AwesomeBoss1 -
Worst part of being a dev...working for a company that doesn't understand your potential. Knowing that you can do so much more than they are but being limited due to a myriad of excuses, budget, time, user base, etc.3
-
Being a dev tends to make me make cold calculated decisions. I hope I haven't made a mistake because of that.4
-
!dev
So I've just been evicted, apparently the house I have a room in is being repossessed.
Now living in a tin hut in the middle of a field. Loving life, life loving me.9 -
I'm a software developer. Last week I spent half a day teaching a "Senior Data Scientist" how to use git branches. I spent the other half a day teaching him how to use Jira. Now I'm being told that the dev team isn't raising enough Pull Requests. FML
-
Worst part of being a web dev is spending the majority of your life making stuff you'll never touch with your hands5
-
Being a grown-up dev is replacing "that’s the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard" with "Ok boss, I’ll consider those architecture suggestions".
-
I've finished all my work. The Dev life is definitely for me. I love being a Dev. I am going to continue being a Dev. Ignore my previous rant.12
-
For a solid 5 minutes, I was wondering why the text color wasn't changing.
Sometimes I really hate being a dev.4 -
Best part about being a dev? You need just a laptop and an active Internet connection to learn and start building.1
-
Worst part of being a dev? Ever got an error message without a corresponding stack overflow question/awnser?1
-
Best xp : dev on new tech
Worst xp : being pressured to deliver something out of that new tech over a very short period1 -
The worst thing of being a dev is that you can never enjoy things at face value anymore. If only I could play games without counting in my head how many objects are ticking too often .etc :(1
-
Really hate being a developer sometimes, as soon as people find out what sort of Dev you are; they begin associating you with known successes and their personality...
I'm a game developer that works in 2D so I get thrown in the basket as being obsessed with Japan, have outlandish hair and am just an all round wanker.
Stereotypes can really bring you down sometimes...8 -
Spending half a day wondering why certain DIVs refused to appear in a custom theme I was building, only to find out the reason why was because AdBlock had blocked the IDs being used.
Have kept AdBlock turned off on my primary dev machine ever since.3 -
At what point do I stop being a Jr dev? Is it a time spent in the field type of thing?
Or is everyone a Jr dev and titles are pointless.15 -
Sometimes hardest part of being dev is staying calm and trying to explain someone why something is a BAD idea, than see being ignored and just silently prepare fix so when shit goes south you can quick fix shit the other dude/dudette fucked up regardless of number of warnings.
Sigh, another dumpsterfire of this variety incoming.5 -
The worst part of being a dev is when you realize you have a major design flaw in your architecture at 4:50 PM on a Friday. Goodbye weekend, hello intense thought.2
-
As a college student, best part of being a dev is when there is no class, but instead of being happy for going home earlier to do whatever like everyone else, my happiness comes from being able to stay late at work, and put that project to roll.
Only developers can feel that. -
Worst thing about being a Dev:
Getting forced by a non dev for a timescale without even being allowed to look at the issue. Then being held to that made up deadline!!1 -
I fucking hate being a Dev sometimes.
G i v e m e f u l f i l l i n g t a s k s p l e a s e
Not these shitty ones with API documentation riddled with holes 🫠😥6 -
Trying to push my development career towards being a full stack web dev and got a really sick job doing exactly this. Now my company is trying to go Salesforce. 🙁🙁🙁🙁6
-
I was being interviewed by a tenured Java Dev for a position of android Dev in a big company. it was a glass walled cubicle, and I could see in the reflection that he was browsing stack overflow and asking me the questions. My answers, although correct, didn't match with the accepted answer in stack overflow. sigh. felt good to be rejected.1
-
While in a meeting with our CEO, I make mention of the fact that we now have the opportunity of being able to "repay technical debt". Before being able to go on much further with the conversation, the "dev manager" turns to me...
"Dev Manager": You're going to have to explain 'technical debt'.
Me: ... 🤦🏻♂️4 -
The best part of being a dev is that no matter how long you take to solve a problem, you know that even after a whole night of solving issues it will be worth the effort because you will deliver a functional product and there is no best feeling.2
-
My biggest dev regret was that I've followed other people's dream.
I lost precious time into trying being the "good kid" for my family and support them in their time of need.
Now I'm considered old for a starter and getting a dev job becomes harder with each passing day.4 -
Not being motivated enough to work on or finish personal projects.
Apparently, easier said, than done when you have a full-time Dev job.1 -
Hands down, my favorite part being a dev the HUGE range of industries I can apply my craft to.
In 10 years, I've bounced from structural engineering, to vision accessibility, to healthcare, to eCommerce. All from the comfort of my developer's keyboard.
While this isn't necessarily unique to the dev role, it's the spice of life that keeps my mind to young.2 -
When a front end dev asks why this if statement always runs:
if (somevar != 'string1' OR somevar != 'string2') {
// code always being run
}4 -
Fuck today and fuck every piece of shit manager and non-dev coworker that thinks they contribute anything meaningful besides being a fucking idiot and making things complicated. I hope my team, except for the other devs, jumps off a bridge into a valley of dicks and spikes. I hope my client tells them to personally fuck themselves for being such a useless waste of space. Fuck off and die cunts.1
-
Worst part of being a dev is that feeling that you're walking up the down escalator. Can't get ahead and if you stop, you're back where you started.
Oh and some punk kids keep passing you on the way! Lol -
Best part about being a dev...
Satisfaction that people are using you inventions/products to better their lives.
I know it sounds cliché, but software dev is a lot like art.
Guessing, Da Vinci must have felt the same way in the Renaissance.2 -
Lead Dev sends rant about the app being a week late...
Doesn't take into account that I was pulled off it for two weeks to work on something else and the other dev was on maternity for two weeks :/2 -
Being a dev intern is so hard! The company expects me to have knowledge as a senior developer but with a stipend of a janitor! :(3
-
Best part of being a dev is the fact that we get to use our brains everyday. No day is ever monotonous.
-
Five interviews and challenges later and I’m told they won’t be going further with me.
Over month of my life. Finally thought this was the one. But oh well. Depression.
I officially quit being a dev.
It’s been rad y’all.12 -
Just tried out Minecraft's shader mod SEUS and wondering what the fuck am I doing with my life being a web dev and not working on graphics.
If you have an nvidia gpu, please give it a try.
This is an example with PBR textures, it's mind blowing https://youtu.be/RbM5w9CBDIw
INB4 comment like "peasant web dev wants to do graphics lmao"11 -
!dev
i am so lucky to have a good memory. i am not the best problem solver, but i remember lots of previous solution. being a dev has really help my thought processes though.
tldr; i told my gf i'd get an ass tattoo of her choice if i got a 1500+ on the sat and now i'm nervous because after looking online i can't find a single math question i got wrong.9 -
Dear dev rant. I stopped being a web designer today and am now a software "developer". I feel like I don't know crap again :)3
-
I will take any dev who can defend their point of view under scrutiny but admit to being wrong over one that just agrees with everything i say. I will also take a dev that asks questions over one who agrees with everything i say. In fact the only thing worse than a dev who agrees with everything i say, is one that disagrees with everything i say, and one that doesnt show initiative.1
-
Thousands of books, tutorial and tons of resourcew which are to guide us, make us feel more lost.
Being a noobie dev is not easy.4 -
Best part about being a (intern) dev?
Has to be being able to eat when I want, get a drink when I want, take a break when I want. But most of all, the godly feeling of being able to dress like a slob and not having to care about looking like one.5 -
Does anyone remember the #itgetsbetter gay pride campaign from a couple of years ago? Whenever I read a new dev being overly happy I want to comment #itgetsworse
-
Imagine being a senior dev with a green junior that says: "Well maybe there is a better way and I just don't know"
and you say:
"There is, I'm telling you"
only to continue on discussing it more.5 -
!(isRant(thisPost));
Submitted my third pull request today in just a couple months as an intern, got told I'm doing a great job and already being considered to move to a more in depth dev team. Honestly a dream come true. Great company, great people, and I have a solid shot at a REAL full time dev position after college. I'm so happy man all that work finally paying off. -
Got a message from recruiter with a proposal on LinkedIn
Answered and say I would be happy to chat.
She sends me a message to tell her about my experience being a dev for pre screening. On LinkedIn....4 -
Worst part about being a dev.
Non-technical people see your awesome app.... and then bring their faulty hardware gear for you to fix! Wtf!!2 -
Why does everyone screenshot a Tweet, instead of using a perfectly good app 'Tweet2Pic' being available on Play Store.
P.S: I am the dev, shamelessly promoting my app. I am not sure if I can share links here 😅3 -
Worst part of being a dev? Probably that there aren't enough hours in the day for me to do all the things i want/need to do...
-
Sometimes I feel people are too damn slow.
Usually I have to outpace every particular person in the sidewalk.
Some of my dev friends have the same problem too, so I guess it should have something to do with being a dev.1 -
!dev !rant
I'm looking for recipe to try and make as I'm a bit too bored and my school life is being a bitch. Can anyone recommend me their favorite recipe?
And yes, I'm bold to assume you guys can cook20 -
The best thing about being a dev? The darkness that comes crawling out at night doesn't scare us. Even when we're alone we know we're protected by a magical screen of light.
-
Being made redundant from my first dev job this morning.
Might as well make it a positive thing though! I've now got time for a few side projects and open source contributions!1 -
** Chatting to a Dev and a normal being**
Dev: Damn Linux command isn't working!
Me: Try Sudo
Normal Being: ... Are u guys cooking meth or something?? 😱
Me: LEAVE 👉🚪 -
What's with Angular? Why are there so many Job Openings for Angular in India? It's like every recruiter is asking Angular. And the pay is much more than the backend Dev positions. Just because its frontend. I feel voilated for being a backend dev.3
-
Spent years ranting about being a contractor and freelancing. Finally got a job at a big company. Now I'm hating it and missing my old flexible work life. Hello dev rant, I'm back!4
-
I really really want to change jobs and pursue being a game dev.
I am so tired of our company kissing our clients' asses, out of fear they might leave, making the developer work an extra mile without the appropriate salary for the extra work, which now I realize why we have alot of sh*ty projects.
I think there is a clear line between customer service and being suckups.
:(4 -
I fucking hate webpack and frontend development so fucking much, why do I have to see my site not loading the bundled JS code on production but being absolutely fine in dev? is like watching my mom being run by a car over and over and over while I try to remember how it all was before she gets run over, FUCKING STOP WEBPACK, I havent sleep but just 4 hours since yesterday, I NEED YOU TO WORK JUST AS YOU DID IN DEV WITHOUT THE PERKS OF HMR FFS, JUST FUCKING DO IT2
-
Being a junior dev sometimes sucks. People always gotta second guess your work and make you feel like shit. And never apologize when they realize they were wrong. 🤬🤬🤬2
-
Best part of being a dev is able to do something I love everyday and able to feed myself while doing it.
-
Well, that's how much it costs to hire a senior developer. I think I'll just go back to being a junior dev :-D.2
-
I feel like being a doctor is like being a contract dev. You're thrown into a bad situation, you know the stack but you don't know the project history, best practices aren't followed, and the only dev is also the primary stakeholder who learned everything he knows from w3schools.2
-
In all seriousness, the best part of being a dev is that you learn something new every day. That serves me personally as motivation. There are so many fields of study that embody what a dev is, and because of this, there are a LOT of things that you can do and create. On the other hand, the worst part of being a dev is the fact that we can't do it forever.
-
Okay, honst question:
What the fuck is up with all that self deprecation?
I am not talking about the usual irony that comes with certain stereotypes about being a developer.
I am talking about people telling themselves that they are unable to socialize, find a girlfriend or generally justifying bad things just because they belong to a certain group.
It's not the 80s. Software devs and nerds in general are not all social outcasts anymore. I don't understand how some people can just "accept their fate as a dev" and act as if anything is keeping them away from social success.
What's your take on this issue?17 -
Happy!
Being an Android Dev myself, I bought my first app in Play Store!
Nova Launcher Prime was offered @ ₹10 (~0.15$). No matter how small the contribution is, it's quite a special joy to support another dev!4 -
Worst part of being a dev is no clear career path. I have no idea what I'll be doing in the next 5 years3
-
fellow dev thought he was being clever, hiding his private ssh keys inside image files on a public web server...2
-
Best part of being a (freelance) dev : working from home, being able to see my newborn son slowly growing up. Not easy to run after clients days after days, but I don't regret the silly project managers, the dumbasses from the marketing, and, gosh, I don't miss the CTOs. :)1

I think that more than learning about CS, I learned how to cope with enormous amounts of frustration that comes with being a dev and I also felt great when I was being challenged with actual deadlines through exams, hackathons, assignments, practicals and tough professors.
Professionally, I think the great knowledge of fundamentals of CS helps a lot and it is just a great way to get your foot inside the door (for internship interviews and career opportunities) of a company and then show what you're made of when it comes to being a dev.
Also, I had the time of my life because I was around like-minded people who loved the same things and it was good to watch them suffer at first and then, watch them succeed at something that I was about to do. -
find that comfortable spot between
not having a manager and being free to do stuff as u see fit.
and having a dev manager who can take the blame when things go south1 -
Best thing about being a dev?
Going on Roblox and some kid claims he was a hacker, then you tell him why he isn't and does not know any of the tech terms you use. Then again why am I playing roblox4 -
Not dev related but this panic buying over covid19 is putting my family in a hard place, I have 5 kids to feed and there are no slots of home delivery and most things are being sold out.8
-
Being a programmer or dev is a lot like being a chef: (I've done both)
Sure it's something anyone can just jump in on with minimal experience, and probably make a little thing that kinda looks cool to the layman, but it takes experience and hard lessons to make something that will impress the judges.4 -
Best part of being a dev
When your sysadmin father blocks all social websites and installs keyloggers but you set up linux instead6 -
best part of being a dev... job interviews where experience always counts more than education...
i feel being a dev has given me great sarcasm skills -
I get the feeling that trying to live as if being a dev is not a lifestyle is a lie. Not that you can’t have other hobbies as a dev, but development needs to be your first hobby as well as your career if you are going to achieve anything in this industry.12

Best part of being a dev is that you get to be part of an amazing community like devRant.
Also the kind of jokes and stories devs get to share and laugh about is beyond anything. 😍 -
Being Ill and a dev is the worst... Not being able to think straight and focus for more then 2seconds really kills any sort of work you can do5
-
Posted previously about our codebase being a monolithic, poorly-written, pain-to-maintain gigantic cluster-fuck. And the efforts made to rewrite it.
Well, we made huge success the previous year in this regard. I rewrote the entire API while my other team mates worked on two different UI apps one of which is now in production and the other soon to be released in alpha.
Processes have being put in place for our team and are being improved.
We still have some technical debts though.
Dev goal for 2020,
- Pay most of the technical debt.
- Dive deeper into Flutter and finish the app I wanted.
- Play with ML, AI and Game dev.4 -
People sound like they hate their jobs here. What's your favorite part of being a dev? I like the idea of turning an idea into a real thing3
-
Be interested. Try to do whatever you're doing the best way possible. Do research, keep up, roll with the punches, and don't take things personally. If you like being a dev, it should be easy to find the fun in it.
-
Knowing a lot but getting chewed out over not knowing some obscure thing or others expecting you to be able to read their minds...smh that or then not responding to questions..so tldr; people, people are the worst part about being a dev.
-
A combination of life literally pushing me in this direction and my own interest in everything that is smart or complex.
But, I hope it serves as a stepping stone for me to achieve better things than being "just a programmer/dev" -
You got it all wrong, it's being a dev that helped me a lot in a lot of domains: organization, logic, basic maths that I kept struggling with for years, and the love to learn new stuff everyday
-
It's amazing that we had to explain to an offshore API dev how timezones work. You'd think they know what it is by being in a different timezone, think again.3
-
Do you think a #MITBragDay would go down so well?
Don't get me wrong WIT is amazing and I am all for it. Gender isn't even a factor for me working in dev.
The thing I don't enjoy is being vilified for being a male in tech. I feel like I'm the bad guy.11 -
Best part about being a dev? The feeling of progression. Every line you write will have an immediate impact to the outcome and you can clearly see where are you heading. Also being able to create something you've imagined.
-
I HATE being a fullstack dev. I am responsible for everything. Its so exhausting because you cant focus on one thing.
Or its just me not being able to organize things....5 -
Best part of being a dev: when I try to explain what I'm doing to non-dev, they look at me as if was talking about black magic. A mix of fear and admiration.
-
Best part of being a dev? Converting coffee into code. ☕
Worst part? Dealing with others' shitty code everyday.1 -
Just got out of a dev hellhole
Being stuck in one is just minecraft where the diamonds move and you don't wanna stop digging cause they look close but they keep getting away1 -
Being tempted by a job offer as an iOS dev that has full (paid) training. Not a fan of apple but heard swift is a nice language (assuming it is swift).
I've spent the last year and a half learning the react way as my first dev job, not sure whether it's beneficial to keep on this path or diversify. -
Working on a bug that in my opinion never worked. “Sr. Dev” dares to say the function has worked before. I’m a 100% sure it never did.
“Yes but everything is being tested before we go live.”
Dude, we have a monkey testing our stuff are you serious!?3 -
I dont think Why sometimes I feel lost with errors and hate developing and sometimes kill them and love being a Dev
-
being a senior dev is boring. whatever you try, works -_- whatever problem you face in a new tech, gets fixed within a few minutes -_- old problem solutions are either in a repository you remember or in a browser bookmark -_- juniors come to you for solutions instead of googling -_-
there is absolutely no excitement in work life -_- dont be a senior dev -_-4 -
Best part of being a dev?
You get to bring life out of nothing.
"You get to play god."
How awesome is that? -
As a dev, the present one. First year working as a dev since march. I learned a bajillion things and am being payed.
As a dev this was easily the most productive year of my life. -
One of my other dev colleagues believe that just because I don't want to work in a particular project and I don't like the decision of management, I'm being negative.
Where the fuck is Logic? -
Simply the fact that i didn't started my dev carreer earlier because of lets say reasons which costs me 7 years of time which on one hand gave me a whole lot of experience across some fields but god damn it sucks being near thirty and still being a student while other friends are already leading teams and working on million euro projects -.-
-
Worst part of being a (new) dev, and by new I mean first dev job and I'm a month in, is keeping commit messages from being novels3
-
Maybe I don't know, or don't understand what "Front end" actually means, many companies ask for a "Front end developer" and then I see their requirements, and wow, I think a lot of them are just one "step" away of being a Full Stack Dev position.
-
If I wasn't rejected for being mentally unfit, I'd have joined the Navy probably.
But I got rejected so I focussed more on dev.
Alternatively, I'd probably try to become a pro gamer buuut I gave up my shot for doing so to become a dev instead (and yes, I *actually* had a shot at becoming a pro gamer during my teens if I pushed through)2 -
I showed a photo of my 3d printed gopher coding buddy to a girl and explained how it works. Non-dev. She told me don't show this anyone else. She has a point... I didn't consult my gopher first if he was okay with being shown.
-
Worst part of being a dev:
Having to go through a week long battle with the infrastructure team to do what I could have done in 5 minutes. -
Being a native Android dev for most of my college days(yet to start a full time professional life), i often feel scared of my life choices.
Like, i chose to go into a field in which am totally on my own . Android is not a subject taught or supported by colleges, so a virtual shelter that every fresher gets, i.e that of a "he's just a college passout, he wouldn't know that" is not for me. I am supposed to be a self learner and a knowledgeable android dev by default.
Other than that , idk why i feel that am having a very specific skillset which would be harmful for me if am not the best at it.
I feel the same for entire Android dev. I mean, its nothing but a very specific hardware device with a small screen and a bunch of lmited sensors. Our tools and apps are limited to just manipulate them to do little fancy stuff offline. Other than that everything (and sometimes even this too) could be achieved by a website/webapp of a web dev.
A particular native android dev don't know how the ML/AI stuff works, don't know how backend stuff works don't know how the cloud stuff works, jeck we don't even know how those unity games work!
We are just some end product makers taking data from somewhere handled by someone and printing them in fancy gui.
(But we are good at ranting about stupid mobile hardware manufacturers, i tell u that)
So am not sure if being an Android dev is a going to be good for me in the future. I mean , a web dev always gets to interact at every level of products, but we can't.
I always feel my future will end up being limited to being good in Android, later shifting to IOS to being completely unemployed because everything is controlled by js and web dev tools and native programming is no longer a thing anymore :/4 -
My first dev job after vocational high school is being an android dev, still on 2.1.
Small amount of tutorials for doing basic stuffs, no libraries that makes life easier, my english sucks and no idea how to java.
Oh and i did the backend too.
But at least i got paid 150$ a month which is nice than being an unemployed -
Slowly biding my time till the windows 10 update stops being free and I can proceed to use my win7 Dev environment without risk of a dirty forced update2
-
Time to face the truth.
I'm being moved from one team to another. Which is great.
But the reason I'm being moved is to take over for another dev. So that dev can get a promotion. So basically I'm getting a promotion, without the pay raise.
I can't fight this either.
So I'll take this as an opportunity to get all the experience. Also begin looking around.1 -
The worst part about being a Dev is explaining what exactly that you do to your distant relative who knows nothing about computers 😑
-
Are there any JavaScripts dev out there using Eclipse (excluding students who are being forced)?
Is this actually a thing in 2019?
I'm being asked to run a JS seminar with Eclipse as the IDE. I've not seen this used in a JS shop for ages. Are there significant pockets of use out there that I'm unaware of?3 -
I get to unleash my creativity.
My classmates && teachers fear me because they think I will screw up their computer/smartphone if they make me unhappy, gives me a virtual protection field from my friends bullshit.
I look cool doing being a dev.
And finally, learning to be a dev improves my logical thinking skills.1 -
Being by far the most junior dev on a small team is tough. On top of no real pro experience having to learn an unfamiliar framework and the overall architecture/design.2
-
Best part of being a dev?
Fixing everyone's printer, malware, and Windows update issues. Love that!4 -
I love being a part of a dev project as a non-dev employee, but I really wish I could leave VBA.
If for no other reason, because I'm tired of writing functions that end with "Me.Cells(Row, Column).Value" practically in my sleep.
There are a lot of other reasons, though...1 -
!dev related
Siiiigh,
With how smart programmers usually are it's really surprising to me that there's still a bunch of racism, sadly even here on devRant every now and then...
Is a not being racist that much to ask for?9 -
Worst part of being a dev is when you need a patch for your sleeping schedule but don't have time for updates
-
The worst part about being a dev is having to deal with resource allocation of two hands, three keyboards, two mice 😂and a coffee all throughout life1
-
Because I'm leaving the company, they planned me on the project that caused me to burn out... thanks Head of Dev! You really deserve a metal for being even shittier than you already were!!5
-
I could never quite picture a reason for dev professionals to unionize. Is there one?
https://vice.com/en/article/...36 -
After my Holiday i was totaly rested... But a week ago three collegues and myself started a side project... It is soo hard to get up these days!
Best and worst part of being a dev?
The side projects -
What is something people keep saying to you about being a dev that really annoys you?
Mine is that all forms of pixel art must be for Minecraft (Really really really irritating!) -
i got a dev!rant nostress ball, because i didn't have any serious rants and used the app for fun purposes.
edit: do you think maybe it can also help in debugging, although it's nothing close to being a duck. -
The worst part about being a dev is that I regularly feel like I don't fit in and I think it's because I lack the Y chromosome.13
-
The urge to get a tea, followed by the urge to release the bladder, followed by another tea...
Being a dev is a vicious cycle2 -
Worst part of being a dev is everybody claiming that their way of doing things is the Holy Grail... So many holy grails.
-
Best part of being a dev?
The ability to browser through the file system of online c/c++ compilers 😅 -
Not really a rant, but...
during times like the last 3 or so months, being a dev feels kinda extra sweet: the only difference for me has been a raise and increase in productivity -
Best:
- Guiding few junior engineers.
- Figured out the root cause for an issue which would hampered the productivity of some folks.
Worst:
- Not being able to work on a proper dev ticket
- Not even being able to identify a proper fix for the issue mentioned above. (It is still in the works, but only after 2021) -
The worst part of being a dev is actually explaining what you do to people with no technical experience.
-
Sticker post!! Recently got to play with Stackbit, a slick way to spin up JAMStack sites and being a super early beta adopter netted me some sweet stickers.
As a dev stickers always make me giddy like a little kid. So dumb but I love it.
What's your fav dev sticker you've ever Recieved and what's the story behind it??10 -
I can't imagine how exactly not being a dev feels like :D (in the sense of skill, not profession). I honestly believe it will be part of primary education in the not so far future.
So actually I need reasons for not to be a dev :) -
So I've been looking at web dev job apps recently and reading over some of the requirements needed and almost every company advertising for a web dev is also wanting a web developer who is also a 10/10 web designer... this proper irks me as after doing a course which helps you ease easily into the web industry being a competent designer wasn't a requirement.
Why is it that to be a web dev now days you need to be also good at designing?1 -
I own a small software company and we are going to make T-shirts for all my coworkers, mainly programmers.
We are about 20 people and I wanted to make the shirts witg a small company logo, but the primary should be dev related text, slogans, jokes or illustrations.
But I'm out of ideas, being a programmer myself, I though Dev rant would have some cool suggestions 😎
Hit me!10 -
Best part of being a dev?
Not there yet, but as long as one has the knowledge, one can create anything, and make people feel connected to their creation.
At least that's what I'm aiming at1 -
Worst part about being a dev is that feeling like you have missed something before your go live. :/1
-
The best part of being a dev is that I can write useless piece of code like a profanity retweeter bot or a script for auto replying Facebook birthday wishes and have a ton of fun making them
-
I read about wasm and being a web dev Im now scared.
So I want o learn c++. Even if not for wasm it would still be really cool to have that language in my toolbox.
Any recommendations where to start?6 -
best thing being a dev?
working remote and thus having meetings with clients on visio wearing a fancy shirt while naked bottom.1 -
Hi dev community! As we aré in the Spooky Month I would Like ti know tour scary ir chilling experiences as a dev. For instance: delete the database without where, etc. Or weirda experiences being a Dev.13
-
If all dev job were taken by AI, I'll probably go back to making dolls and fabric jewelry. Is not as good a source of income as being a dev but you can survive off it.
-
Worst part of being a dev?? Having to recompile just because of an error which isnt supposted to happen
-
Wanted to work as a Dev being busy writing code. Got into an MNC and just deploying applications and rarely writing code. :(
-
Any remote dev out there? What's your experience being remote been like? What advise would you give someone starting a remote position?1
-
I would go back to being a mountain guide for sure. Mountaineering is my passion... But being a dev pays WAY more and it's alright.4
-
Best part about being a dev: Encountering problems and being able to fix what I find.
Having the flexibility to reason through solutions and occasionally write my own. -
Best parts of being a dev.
Getting paid to use your brain solving problems.
Trying to explain what you do to the elderly.
Excuses for taking a break and talking out loud.
Getting to work with other devs to improve your knowledge. -
Best part of being a dev:
You can tell people you can't do something or it will take twice as long, and they don't have a clue as to why because you are a wizard in their eyes -
The best part of being a Dev is it teaches you to live your life the way you want.
You are a programming language and all the functions inside that language defines you. -
being so incompetent i can't have a working dev environment across different workplaces and/or so cursed it happens to me repeatedly
-
@dfox must have known asking what the worst thing about being a dev is would get far more responses than asking what the best thing is.
-
Being a person prior to Dev work. Lol... Jk.
Honestly though... I'm still new at this but I feel like me being a middle ground helps in tech discussions with the business side of the house. I translate for the senior dev and everyone seems to appreciate knowing what he's meaning exactly when he starts going off on functions and objects. -
Worst part of being a dev is the word 'simple'.. used in the sentence by non devs, " I just have a couple of simple features"...
-
When a severe outage/screw-up happens or when an insane request comes through and the only solution is some adhoc coding... the best part of being a dev: 1. being the one they turn to in those dark times, and 2. the self confidence boost when you alone have saved the day. It's thankless but those times make up for it.
-
Worst part of being a dev?
I'm sure it is working on a problem for a long time that you forget what the problem was in the first place... -
What's best about being a dev?
that most of our work is done by the skillful use of google and we still seem like geniuses to "ordinary" folks.
Therefore to answer the question: http://lmgtfy.com//... -
I spent 2 years as android dev, after that another 2 years as game dev (current work).
Now I wanna go back to being android dev but I kinda lost self confidence and feels like I'm starting from square 1. Also I will struggle explaining my 2 years gap of working with game development.
Feels like I'm a junior in the area. Feeling totally useless since the way I am now I couldn't even pass android dev interview or complete a tech task.
Having ADHD doesn't help with his. Having gained +25kg and being a fat fuck doesn't help also.
Fuck me.6 -
The worst part of being a dev is talking to non-dev people. They cannot understand simple logic. You need to describe things twice or more. They think you should solve the entire problem when they ask just a single question instead of answering this question.
I even cannot understand what those people are talking about most of the time. -
So I'm a fresher and recently joined a startup as a software dev trainee. The talk has been ON this whole week of me getting ragged. D-day came today. Pizzas were ordered. And they pleaded to atleast make them feel like I'm being ragged. 😂2
-
Worst part of being a dev?
Tried to explain to das and family what I do and until now, no success!
Not even my wife understands!
And, according to my father in law, I work with "internet". -
Best part of being a dev: seeing my code grow, take shape and become robust, line after line, refactor after refactor.
-
I think its a bit of a cliche. But when I saw "The social network" I knew this is what I was gonna do. I always loved maths, physics and logic, though. So, I guess its no surprise I ended up being a dev.2
-
Firstly give me the skill equivalent to the best in the field. If the rules allow it all of these skills listed and if not any of these :-
1. Computer networking to the point of having the same knowledge as the best in the field. Why? I am curious about that stuff and being able to work as a network engineer if I don't get a good Dev job
2. Cyber security. Why? I enjoy it and being able to make sure my code is not easily exploitable is a cherry on top. Also having a backup job in case I don't get a good dev job
3. Being able to communicate with non dev people about developer or non developer stuff easily and being a really good leader.
4. Being a good developer in whatever language I use and instantly being able to learn new programming languages and frameworks or libraries with ultra in depth information. -
Anyone gotten as far as being furloughed or getting a wage cut yet during the lockdown? What is the safest way to navigate the waters as a dev if one should be presented with this circumstance?5
-
The best part of being a dev is being able to know how to join the right pieces together for building anything without reinventing the wheel1
-
I've been tasked with adding QuickBooks online to a cloud solution we have. Being the newest dev here I did what any self respecting dev would do. Spent all day on stack overflow and Google 😂
-
Best part of being a dev? Being able to build programs and websites which is my hobby, for money. Also, me and my girlfriend met because I was the only website builder at my school at the time, and she needed a website for a project. At this time, we're almost 3 years together 😊 I'd call that pretty damn awesome
-
Best part about being a dev is easily the fact than when something about a product bothers me, I can either build a better product or stuff it!
