Shit... I just got my phone stolen. Realized it 40 seconds post factum [left it at the shop counter and someone took it].
20 minutes later called the police [cuz I had to get home and use wife's phone].
5 min later poluce arrived
10 min later they got all they could from shop's security officer.
Police officer asks me to login my samsung acc on his phone. 2 minutes later we are on the way to the exact location my phone is at.
15 minutes later officer hands me my samsung 😁
got my phone back in less than an hour after theft.
maybe... Ummm... Maybe all this tracking thing is not that bad...?13 -
The news:
"Oh no, big tech companies are taking advantage of our information and tracking everything we do. We're too dependent! "
Us:
"Wow this sounds important. *Googles it *"
"Everyone needs to know, *shares on Facebook*"

The company behind ads on dutch national news sites/tv stations is stopping with tracking ads.
The interesting reason behind that IMO is that they have this very simple 'banner' which asks in a very understandable way whether people want (or not) tracking shit/cookies placed/loaded on their browser.
Apparently 90% of all visitors go for the "No" option so they don't see the point in continuing to try it anymore.
Awesome!5 -
Mom : there's a letter for you. It's from USA. Are you in trouble ?
Me : oooouh shit what have I done ?
Fiuuuuu..NSA still not tracking my buggy code 😂9 -
I don't use Google/Facebook for privacy reasons (and their sub-services etc). Haven't used them for ages but noticed that google still loads a lot of domains like analytics etc. This goes for facebook as well.
I now blocked a lot of google/facebook domains through my hosts file.
It's funny to see the amount of DNS requests to those fb/google connected domains nearly go to zero and also the fact that I literally can't load google/facebook anymore!126 -
Just made a laser sentry tower for my cats. Next up is adding some tracking so it can play with them by itself while I'm at work and after that I'm adding a Wi-Fi module and camera so that i can also play with them while I'm at work... I couldn't resist using a mouse to top it off 😂17

My uni implemented Bluetooth beacon based attendance monitoring.
Raspberry pi + cloned beacons = 100% attendance.
Idiots 😂
(Edit for clarity: app on smartphone, Bluetooth beacon in each room)29 -
Okay so my co-workers explains why they give me the title "GitHub Maid":
Basically most of the time the engineering didn't have the time to scroll through issues, and that includes me, so a lot of this stuff does not get triaged properly when reported. When I stumbled on the tracker, I knew I had to do something, so I sorted and sorted and managed the tickets by my own.
So being a "GitHub Maid" is not something to be embarrassed about after all, in fact, I think the dev team owed me a lot because the issue tracker is more organized, and the issues are getting triaged and assigned properly now compared before.
So if they call you like something similar, be proud of it because some developers wouldn't even bother to tidy up issue tracking.12 -
So guys i really need your help. My girlfriend started getting phone calls at odd hours, so I got suspicious and started tracking her phone. Then I found out that she has been going to this guys house at wears hours, then once when I was tracking her my computer froze, so what could it be? How do I fix my computer14

My coworker requested I add a bunch of tracking to our product.
I've previously tried explaining to him (and honestly the rest of the company) about privacy issues stemming from tracking, such as by their beloved Venmo. Venmo tracks absolutely fking everything you give it access to, from location data to your entire facebook, twitter, foursquare, etc. feeds, and sells ALL of it to third parties. It's scary. but! this guy simply does not understand, and/or does not care, and marches right on into all the surveillance, loudly singing the song of convenience to all who'll listen. (Nobody else in the company cared, either. :/)
ugh.
Anyway, I'm conflicted.
I have to install some tracking, but I can probably come up with an excuse to cut most of it out and gimp their surveillance. It'll still be useful to us, but it'll limit the amount of data the tracking company can sell to third parties.
but they'll push this guy pretty hard on it, and he's as technically-inclined as a smudged glass of warm, stale beer. "Better for your conversion!" they'll say. "How much tracking do you want?" he'll reply. "@ashkin, why can't you do this right now? What else do you need to make this happen?" he'll firmly inquire. and so I'll be forced to make it happen...
ergh13 -
I have a pi-hole setup in my network for ad and tracker blocking and am dual-booting my pc.
I recently noticed just how much data windows really is trying to gather from my machine.
So I took the pi-hole graph and you can VERY clearly see the os switch. All this useless traffic coming from windows. (This is with all the privacy relevant options inside the settings already turned off!)15 -
I wonder how would devRant send the mail with my MAC address? The hard way by tracking down my system having having the MAC address and deliver it to me?? 😂😂
DevRant is being unaware that we all are devs here 😂13 -

I was talking in class. Teacher saw me. She asked me to explain the topic she was going to explain. It was Network Security. I started explaining how we can prevent tracking of our online activities by using VPN and all.
Teacher (to class): Do you all know about VPN?
Whole Class: No.
Teacher (to me): They don't know about VPN. Now, how will you explain?
Me: I won't.

What’s the point in a fucking package tracking system when it hardly updates anything?!
Ordered my phone last Wednesday and got an update saying that it was going to be picked up by dhl soon.
Nothing new until today: it’ll be delivered Wednesday.
So you literally go from the first to last status in two updates, what’s the fucking point?
🤬10 -
HUGE FUCKING DILEMMA FOR ME.
I will probably get the chance of choosing a company phone soon (as in, next few days).
Option 1: Android - not allowed to root or anything crazy so I'll have a partly open system but with google tracking fully enabled at all times (most probably).
Option 2: iOS - Also not allowed to jailbreak or anything 'weird' but it's entirely closed source. Although no Google tracking shit.
I honestly have no clue what to choose.
Halp.105 -
A client asked me to work on a new website for them. They setup a WordPress site with a basic theme and asked for the following additions:
- Job application system
- Employee management
- Employee scheduling/holidays
- Online clock-in/out and pay calculation
- Training videos/modules for employees with progress tracking
And their budget... $75

I taught myself programming in 1999, spent two months writing simple ad tracking script in php
I still earn about 1500/ month from it.

Manager: Hey Dev I need to do QA on this PR.
Dev: That PR is not finished yet
Manager: Well do QA now anyway, that way when it is finished it can be merged in right away since QA has already been done on it. It’s a project management technique called “fast-tracking” and it improves efficiency.

Like "Why is Facebook webpage running so slow" (I think cuz of all the tracking stuff, and they are having trouble on my Linux machine). But I gave it a naive duck-duck and found this brilliant tip to "Reinstall JavaScript" to improve that performance. I'm just so speechless rn... And the cherry on the ice-cream is the link :Drant reinstall js wtf-anyway? like what? guys... facebook is evil i dont want to use it i use arch btw java is also an island12

I'm such an idiot!
For a while now, my machine has been kinda sluggish.
Just installed VSCode and a little popup saying that git was tracking too many changes in my home directory. I must've ran `git init` at some point and it's spent fucking forever tracking changes of >3,000 files.
`rm -rf .git/`
Quick. As. Fuck.8 -
Would the web be better off, if there was zero frontend scripting? There would be HTML5 video/audio, but zero client side JS.
Browsers wouldn't understand script tags, they wouldn't have javascript engines, and they wouldn't have to worry about new standards and deprecations.
Browsers would be MUCH more secure, and use way less memory and CPU resources.
What would we really be missing?
If you build less bloated pages, you would not really need ajax calls, page reloads would be cheap. Animated menus do not add anything functionally, and could be done using css as well. Complicated webapps... well maybe those should just be desktop/mobile apps.
Pages would contain less annoying elements, no tracking or crypto mining scripts, no mouse tracking, no exploitative spam alerts.
Why don't we just deprecate JS in the browser, completely?
I think it would be worth it.22 -
Made advanced tracking system, position, history, speed, allowed areas, warnings, notifications - the whole shabang.
Client is more impressed by form converting hours and minutes into decimals.

So much rant against the GDPR. In the meanwhile USA Today created a site just for the EU. No Tracking or Ads. A site which was normally 5mb big to load is now 500kb for the EU! Awesome! Thats what the internet could be!3

DuckDuckGo may be great for not tracking you, however it sometimes lacks the "smarts" of Google....6

Day 1 at internship:
Manager: Can you get this RFID tracking system working? We have the full source we just need it installed.
Me: Sure thing, shouldn't take too long if it's a working system.
Me: (opens VS project)
Code is a sprawling abyss devoid of any intelligible structure, commented with broken one-liners which serve only to annotate method names.
In Mandarin.
For the record the system was broken, took me several weeks to track down all the issues.4 -
I actually like Microsoft these days. Despite developing on Mac machines, we use VSTS for code repo, build/release pipelines and work item tracking, and Azure for all things cloud. It all works incredibly well together and at low cost.
Microsoft has changed ethos massively in the last few years. In my opinion, the classic dev mantra of “Microsoft is shit and evil, Linux is flawless” is outdated and getting kind of boring.6 -
When Google recruits, I guess they don't need to ask you anything, since they are already tracking your every move.13
-
One of the main reasons I completely left windows and osx for Linux is the fact that Linux is open source. In an era of mass surveillance, secret court orders ordering companies to build in backdoors into their products, companies building in tracking into their software and so on, I find it irresponsible to use closed source software.
Only my personal opinion though.8 -
This happened in my first internship I was working for a small company. They had a knack of redefining policies at short notices.
The had this shitty time tracking site which was hosted internally.
We were working on client location for 25/30 days so we didn't have access to the time tracking site. And there comes a memo that everybody has to fill the time tracking or their salary will not be credited.
So when we reach office we hear this "News". We thought they would consider people on client location. But then on salary day we don't get any and are called into VP's office for a verbal lashing. We literally had to fight for two weeks for the salary.

Despite beeing one of the strangest ads I ever saw, this one is a beautiful and scary example of advertising tracking. Although I used a vpn and incognito mode I saw this ad on a page really not tech related at all.6

So, privacy aware dutchies of devRant.
I was waiting for a friend at Utrecht central Station and saw this sticker (image attached).
Basically, by walking in the building with your wifi and / or Bluetooth active, you're giving them consent to track you.
They use the tracking to see where passengers wait for their train and what the popular routes are.
I thought you should know.
(this is the site on the sticker: http://stations.nl/beleid/privacy/)24 -
Google cripples ad and tracking blockers: In January, Chromium will switch to Manifest V3 which removes an essential API in favour of an inferior one. As usually, Google is being deceitful and touts security concerns as pretext.
That hits all Chromium based browser, such as my beloved Vivaldi. The team argues with their own browser internal blocker, but that's far worse than uBlock Origin. One of Vivaldi's core promises was privacy, and that will go out of the window. The team simply doesn't react to people pointing that out. They're fucked, and they know it.
So what now? Well, going back to Firefox because that will include the crippled new API for extension compatibility, but also keep the powerful old one specifically so that ad and tracking blockers will keep working. Google has just handed Mozilla a major unique selling point, and miraculously, Mozilla didn't fuck it up.26 -
"Ad targeters are pulling data from your browser’s password manager"
---
Well, fuck.
"It won't be easy to fix, but it's worth doing"
Just check for visibility or like other password managers handle it iirc: assign a unique identifier based on form content and fill that identifier only.
---
"Nearly every web browser now comes with a password manager tool, a lightweight version of the same service offered by plugins like LastPass and 1Password. But according to new research from Princeton's Center for Information Technology Policy, those same managers are being exploited as a way to track users from site to site.
The researchers examined two different scripts — AdThink and OnAudience — both of are designed to get identifiable information out of browser-based password managers. The scripts work by injecting invisible login forms in the background of the webpage and scooping up whatever the browsers autofill into the available slots. That information can then be used as a persistent ID to track users from page to page, a potentially valuable tool in targeting advertising."

"A Single Line of Computer Code Put Thousands of Innocent Turks in Jail"
I'll leave the title as it was, but people were hunted down just for having been once logged by a tracking pixel inside a messaging app.
Simply terrifying, I hold that off for a while, since it sounded like the usual fakes, but it seems its not, as more and more keep confirming it.
"The government eventually exonerated 11,480 of the wrongly accused, but some had already spent months in prison, and reportedly some even committed suicide."
"Elif finished dressing her youngest and watched police search her family's home before they took her into custody — for using a messaging app the government deems seditious.
She knew the arrest was coming. She'd already lost her job, because traces of the app known as Bylock were found on her phone"
"The regime relies on logs from the country's ISPs to identify users of Bylock, fingerprinting them on the basis of their communications with Bylock's servers. These communications can be triggered without using Bylock, though: Bylock's tracking pixel was used for analytics for pop-up ads and in at least eight apps."

I can't believe people are willing to scan their faces, fingerprints, and retinas on their phones.
Such data is very sensitive as it can't be changed easily.
CCTV is now everywhere and everyone has his own scanner providing data for tracking people.

Hello devs, me and a friend want to do a little experiment. Twitter should be connected to a health tracking device so that users would only be able to reply to tweets as long as their pulse and blood pressure is still on a relaxed level. This could prevent dysfunctional "social" media "discussions" a lot.8

Wow, the India Post's official website has a captcha while tracking a package.

There you are, fiddling with next.js webpack settings, because your isomorphic JS-in-CSS-in-JS SSR fallback from react-native-web to react-dom throws a runtime error on your SSR prerendering server during isomorphic asynchronous data prefetching from Kubernetes backend-for-frontend edge-server with GraphQL.
You have all that tech to display a landing page with an email form, just to send spam emails with ten tracking links and five tracking beacons per email.
Your product can be replaced by an Excel document made in two days.
It was developed in two years by a team of ten developers crunching every day under twelve project managers that can be replaced with a parrot trained to say “Any updates?”
Your evaluation is $5M+. You have 10,000 dependency security warnings, 1000 likes on Product Hunt, 500 comments on Hacker News, and a popular Twitter account.
Your future looks bright. You finish your coffee, crack your knuckles and carry on writing unit tests.5 -
I know Google isn't the worst company in the world. But some of their data tracking just seems a bit odd. Such as keeping audio logs each time you use Google on your phone. Or when it picks up random bits of conversation. Along with them keeping track of where your going, and where you have been. Even if Google maps isn't running.
And one of my all time favorites is when Google Allo was a thing, it used to have access to my camera randomly without actually opening the app. My phone will tell me different logs each time Allo opened the camera without my permission.
I know they need to collect data in order to advance some of their fields of tech. But it just seems a bit intrusive when companies like Google do this.11 -

Those GDPR nag screens actually are more damaging than useful. Nobody has the energy to jump through the hoops all different sites set up for you to opt-out of tracking. Yet you will constantly see those pages if you have opted out.
If you use some privacy extensions that block tracking cookies and stuff, you will keep getting those nag screens, because they have no idea whether you have seen it or not (because of no tracking)
So browsing the web has become the constant of:
1) Search something
2) Deal with nagscreens
3) See the page
4) Go to other page
5) Repeat from step two
I wonder what this will lead to? People are less likely to visit random pages and stick to ones they have account on? Will darknet become more popular? Will somebody design some standard way to get rid of this nagscreen wave?11 -

My boss had a 50 page word document where he add any bugs he has found (he likes to test before it goes to QA) we then have to read that document for any changes (hi-lighted in blue) then add them to our bug tracking system. We tried letting him use our bug tracking tool but he hated using it as the padding on the navigation links was too big. We would have to redesign the 3rd party tool just for him4 -
If you want developers to track of their hours (for grants etc) then that is fine.

When you're mentally debugging a module and you have an intuition about the point of failure.
So you start mentally tracking variables, going down functions calls, moving from one class to another until finally you reach that one line of code that you feel is getting the wrong parameters.
You substitute in the 10 different variables you have been mentally tracking and find out that...
THE LINE OF CODE IS GETTING THE CORRECT PARAMETERS, AND IS FUNCTIONING AS IT SHOULD.

So I was just informed I have 40 tickets with my name on them. No big deal normally except that I had no idea and was scheduling based on the fact that I knew I had 25 on my plate and most of them were OBE. How did I find this out you ask? Well rather than updating the tickets in our ticket tracking system, my PM updated a spreadsheet that is out in no man's land. So it looks like I have been doing no work for the last 3 months when in reality I have been busting my ass to get shut done and fixed. Why even have a ticket tracking system?

Since it's web based I opened the developers window and looked for the call behind the button. You would think it would be at least an Ajax call thingy (I'm not completely into JS)
Turns out it's a readable JS function!
It doesn't stop there... It first makes all calculations on what to display, at last, at the fucking end, it checks a setting whether to proceed the booking or not!!!!
So I found and switched the setting and tried the button again.... Now it fucking works...
No fucking way I am going to tell Exact what the problem is 😫2 -

But seriously who thought of combining Fedex and the United States Postal Service in a delivery method. Sure it sounds great in theory but from my experience, Fedex has the worst tracking ever and USPS is slow in delivering to business addresses.11 -
Why is it so hard to convice coworkers (other programmers) to use source control? Yes it's an extra step every day or so but it can be so helpful and save so much more time tracking down versions and when the bug first appeared. Also, piece of mind if your computer every gets hosed.7

Hi my dear fellow coders, I have a small request for you.
If you are among those coders who are working on microchipping people / quantum dot something, tracking people, classifying people, AI, ML or any other such software which is going to harm or cage us or take away our freedom. Please stop doing so.
Why I came out with this rant?
I myself am working on a covid-19 screening app which would rate people based on symptoms and if they seem high risk they would not be allowed to enter unless they do a covid-19 test. I am tracking their movement and the requirement is to restrict people’s movement.
My conscience says that this is incorrect and and I should not be a part of such things which take away the freedom and liberty of people.
I am stopping it now.13 -

What game engine would you recommend to an indie developer? The type who can't afford a fucking server to run the bloated and buggy unity editor but is actually a developer so isn't afraid of typing.
I've had enough of the improper sandboxing (will crash bc of game scripts), tempfile-based crash-unaware instance tracking (won't restart afterwards) and lack of UI scaling (seriously, that's like accessibility/retina support basics) that is the unity editor. If they had command line tools I'd use them happily.10 -

Firefox developer fucked up this morning my development after the update -_-
The fucking "Enhancing Tracking Protection" was on a local Wi-Fi IP address(192.168...) which automatically redirected to the https of that IP, but I did setup kestrel to listen on HTTP, which resulted in a nice "Cannot enstablich a secure connection(and suck it up because ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)"
Fortunately it's easy to get rid off this cunt, just go on the shield nearby the address and disable that motherfucker.
ps: sorry for the lil rage, my morning train trip development brain cells should not be bothered by this automatic technical troubles
Further question to the Firefox developers:
WHAT THE FUCK are you thinking when you force developers to automatic HTTPS redirection when you should know more than anyone that development is 360deg(and not 90 like your mom)1 -

Back in the days when I knew only Windows, I used to be a Microsoft fan. I wanted to use only Microsoft products. I had a Hotmail email account that Microsoft acquired. I used a version of Windows and Microsoft Office (even though I didn't know at the time that it was pirated). I wanted to be a Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) and promote Microsoft everywhere.
Fast forward to now (or maybe to the time after I got introduced to GNU/Linux), I started hating Microsoft solely for the reason that they had a price-tag on everything. Later on, when I got to open-source software, I hated Microsoft for making all of their software closed-source. When I decided to move out of the Microsoft environment, my next favorite was of course, Big Brother (Google, if you haven't gotten it) - Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive. My personal information was the price to pay for the services even though I wasn't OK with that fact.
Then again, I realized that you could actually have your own stuff if you had the know-how. Compile / host your own software on your own systems. Oh, then I went on a compile spree. That's when I realized I didn't need any of these corporations to own my data. Today, I try my best to keep my data in my control and not some corporations who gives me free stuff for the price of my data and personal information, no thanks.3 -
Question: tl;dr: looking for an open source bug tracking tool, or one that's affordable for small freelancers.
I'm working as freelancer with a client on a project and currently all the bugreporting/feature request/information/discussions/and other stuff happen by Telegram (not my first choice but hey, you know clients).
It happend twice, that I forgot about the specs of a feature we discussed briefly, because there was to much going on and I wasn't able to find it. So the next logical step would be to get a bugtracker.
So far my favorite would be http://www.redmine.org/
Does any one of you have good or bad expirience with it? Would you recommend something else, if so what and why? Other stuff I should consider?6 -

Today I came across a very strange thing or a coincidence(maybe).
I was working on my predictive analytics project and I had registered on Kaggle(repository for datasets) long back and was searching on how to scrape websites, as I couldn't find any relevant dataset. So, while I was searching for ways to scrape a website, suddenly after visiting a few websites, I get notifications of a new email. And it was from Kaggle with the subject line
"How to Scrape a Tidy Dataset for Analysis"
Now I don't how to feel about it. Mixed feelings! It is either a wild coincidence, or Kaggle is tracking all the pages visited by the user. The latter makes more sense. By the way, Kaggle wasn't open in any of the tabs on my browser.1 -

What is it with shipping websites sending you an email saying "hey, here's your tracking number and tracking URL!" and then that *very same link* saying "this tracking number doesn't exist, it can take a few days to show up sometimes, try again!" I'd understand if this was one knock-off weird company, but it seems to be *all of them*.
Seriously, how hard is it to just initialise a tracking number at the point you send that email so it at least shows a "parcel not yet picked up" or similar message? I know it doesn't make much material difference to tracking but it just reeks of bad UX and lazy / incompetent devs.7 -

Anyone else really fucking despise the fact that OSX opens location tracking every time a wifi or Ethernet is connected and as far as I’ve found it can’t be turned off.

I think UPS' Api documentation and service must be the worst documented and build API I have ever seen from a corporate.
1. The developer website is a mess. A total mess. You can barely find the API type you are looking for.
2. When you get the API and download the documentation, the files, .pdf etc is still a mess. Pages long that most are craps.
3. Each request returns Status Code 200. Even if it is an error. This blew my mind.
4. Each request, based on error type or based on tracking activity returns different JSON schema.
For example, the JSON Schema for a shipment in transit is different from JSON schema for a shipment that has been delivered. A shipment that has been returned, a shipment that required signature etc. They are different from each other.
5. And the worst. They do not provide with test tracking codes. I have found some on internet, but they do not work in development and production environment.4 -
Why do these e-marketing companies always have some kind of manager/consultant/strategist/marketeer/whatever to handle emails between me and their devs. Instead of emailing with another technical person and quickly fixing the problem I end up sending one billion emails to someone who has no clue on what needs to be done to fix te problem. From now on my emails contains a part called "to your developer:" explaining the technical part of the email.
And no - I don't want to plan a conference call... just let me code dammit! -

Just reported a minor tracking bug I found on WebKit to the WebKit bugzilla, and I have a few thoughts:
1. Apple product security can be kind of vague sometimes - they generally don't comment on bugs as they're fixing them, from the looks of it, and I'm not sure why that is policy.
2. Tracking bugs *are* security bugs in WebKit, which is quite neat in a way. What amazes me is how Firefox has had a way to detect private browsing for years that they are still working on addressing (indexedDB doesn't work in private browsing), and chrome occasionally has a thing or two that works, with Safari, Apple consistently plays whack-a-mole with these bugs - news sites that attempt to detect private browsing generally have a more difficult time with Safari/WebKit than with other browsers.
I guess a part of that could be bragging rights - since tracking bugs (and private browsing detection bugs, I think) count as security bugs, people like yours truly are more incentivised to report them to Apple because then you get to say "I found a security bug", and internal prioritisation is also higher for them. -

Google researchers have exposed details of multiple security flaws in Safari web browser that allowed user's browsing behavior to be tracked.
According to a report : The flaws which were found in an anti-tracking feature known as Intelligent Tracking Prevention, were first disclosed by Google to Apple in August last year. In a published paper, researchers in Google's cloud team have identified five different types of attacks that could have resulted from the vulnerabilities, allowing third parties to obtain "sensitive private information about the user's browsing habits."
Apple rolled out Intelligent Tracking Prevention in 2017, with the specific aim of protecting Safari browser users from being tracked around the web by advertisers and other third-party cookies.2 -

If any iOS developers are wanting a good repo to follow, I believe HeadGazeLib is about to take off.
There's been a few articles about how eBay is using head tracking to allow for hands free shopping (huge for accessibility!) If the rumors are true, then Apple should be announcing many more devices that support Facial Recognition (like the iPhone X). If they do, then there will a huge surge in games/apps that tap into that technology.
HeadGazeLib makes it super easy to incorporate Head Tracking in your apps, so I think with all the publicity, it will quickly rise to the #1 head tracking "add-on".

Programming lesson #8
Nowadays I write tasks for the next day at the end of my shift in the sticky notes app.
That way it's easier to start off for the next day without trying to remember what tasks were remaining from the previous day.
If tasks are greater in number then it's good to go for external task tracking tools. But for me keeping track of just 2-3 tasks is easier by using simple sticky notes app.2 -

The analytics guy just sent me updated tracking specs for a web site.
There are two sheets in the file: "Custom Events LATEST" and "Custom Events updated". This is already confusing enough.
One of them has comments like "I'd like this to be amended", but the event specs described are the same as the ones implemented.
I asked him for clarification, turns out he wants the ones marked in black to be updated, the ones that don't have any label saying they don't need to be updated.
This is also a guy who for at least 2 years has been making columns in spreadsheets wider not by just widening them, or merging multiple cells, but by just letting text overflow into other cells.
I do wonder how some people manage to keep a job. -
Is there a search engine indexing pages that work without JavaScript?
Why?
- I use the Lynx text-mode browser
Why else? Maybe I'm naïve:
- At least without JavaScript the advert/tracking methods will not slow load times or break the page.
- This may be a nice way to highlight websites that don't have time to join an SEO/analytics arms race.8 -
Is there any time tracking tasks management tool? One where I can manage all the tasks on the timeline(based on days).
I feel the urge to perceive how much a task is taking by looking at how long the line is on the timeline.6 -
Fighting phone addiction. Do you know an iOS app that let me track my (monthly, weekly, daily) phone usage that doesn't require all time GPS tracking permission? Moment, Flipd, Offtime, BreakFree all requre GPS traking.8

Almost all of the issue trackers
Why can't any of them just decide to be good for one kind of process. Trying to fit in support for all of them just makes the products worse.
If you really want to cater to every style of issue tracking/work queue just make a low code platform from the start instead of the unholy mess that is jira1 -
Today I came to work and all our main systems where offline (Gitlab, Artifactory, Time tracking, ...). Found out that one of the HDDs of our server (external hosted) died. I started copying some stuff from the second Raid hdd (just in case and because our backup is of course not complete [#notmyfault]) while their datacenter had a power outage.... I'm now waiting for our server to come back to get our systems running again

When you click the notif of "more comments on a rant you commented", could it scroll down to the bottom?
Preferrably to the last comment you saw but that would require some more tracking3 -
Embarcadero tracked my progress on a potential commercial project. To my employer, I know for a fact my employee email is not connected to my personal PC. How did they get that email?
I used the unlicensed pro version of 10.3 because I thought the community version would have the necessary components needed open the source and not break the project. I planned to use the software over the holidays to dissect the code to see what changes I can bring to the table before asking them to buy me the legit license. Embarcadero caught me. Even know my project directories. How did they do it I wonder?4 -
Error: Disk image full.

Not good on a production SMB server. Wasted 2 hours tracking the fault down....
Turns out the boss thought it would be a good idea to install syncing software as remote backup without telling anyone...
It wasn't remote :( -
I think we should ask the CDC to start versioning viruses. I mean we started with COVID-19. From what I hear it should be COVID-19.1 or COVID-19.2 by now.1

The "voluntary" Affirmative Action tracking questions on your site's job applications are no longer voluntary if you don't have an "I choose not to say" option and refuse to accept the placeholder "Choose One"...
"Refusal to provide this information will not subject you to adverse treatment." ...other than the inability to submit your application, of course. -
How about "it's not your business to know that as long as they deliver what's necessary"?
That whole tracking and screenshot software movement for remote work is so vile, main reason I work at fixed rates where I just add a percentage of space on top and then do new contracts if they exceed that.10 -
I want to know how a certain type of software is called.
I once saw a talk where someone tracked his personal life for a year or so. This means photos are tomestamped and have a geolocation. Emails and phone calls are timestamped as well ...
On a timeline software he could then see exactly where he was and what he did on a specific date like 2 years ago...
There's a name for software that tracks all kind of data about your personal life. I think it starts with m.12 -
I made an app for tracking Covid-19.
Can I share the app download link with my friends here or is it against devrant to share such things8 -
I've recently been promoted and I'm going from hourly to salaried. Amidst this crisis and the promotion I've gotten lost in the big changes and forgot to ask the simple questions.
When tf do I leave work if I'm not tracking my hours anymore? (Or for the near future, log off of work)
I know the general consensus is "when the work is done", but we all know the work is never truly done5 -
Just created this, I hope my company won't find this OFFENSIVE or conflicting...
Is just a package for tracking parcel.
https://npmjs.com/package/...4 -
Has anyone used CA's Rally for issue tracking? Is it as bad for devs as I've been warned?
We are being forced to use it instead of Jira because of the pretty reports it generates for management and I am kind of scared...5 -
Spent an hour tracking down a bug you thought you fixed; nvm, it was just Android studio Instant run that didn't deploy the new code! (despite being turned off)

Hey codebroes! Give me your best programming movie, serial, documentary.
That episode from NCIS where they created a GUI for tracking down a criminal doesn't count!3 -
By filling out their tracking tools in a language they can understand prior to their deadline of needing the data, being honest in their meetings, and being right about the time/complexity of the effort.

I am sure that this idea of every site tracking their users must have come from the same people who ask to hack Facebook accounts!

so I spent an entire day tracking a major memory leak (10mb/s!!!). when I find it, it turns out that It's in a deep part of C++ code that I'm not allowed to touch. now I live in fear of just crashong my 16gb machine every time I debug.
-
About to tell the boss I can spend more time tracking my time and moving tasks around in the latest of the project management softwares I’ve had to use here, or I can do the actual work. Not both.

That moment when a 6 month solo project is done and the next day they tell you fuck the asset tracking system
We need you to turn that into pastel evolution

Good bye hard work
Hello sleepless nights -
When you spend an entire week tracking down a bug and it turns out that the bug was caused by someone using the equals operator instead of strcpy.

I've started using azure devops as a project management thing for personal stuff.
This means
1) I've got enough stuff I'm trying to keep track of to warrant an issue tracking system for personal purposes
2) and have worked out that, of all the shit project management options out there, azure is the least shit for my uses.9 -
Hey, make a whole tracking interface, that's at least a month's worth of work, for something that R&D is actively working towards making obsolete in 3 weeks.

I really admire and respect devs here in our country that are helping to build useful apps to combat covid-19 pandemic but please, if the National Government already has this kind of applications or in their pipeline (covid contact tracing, qrcode checkpoint, assistance, etc..) please do not try to hijack by creating similar app and market it. Instead of helping it creates confusion on which info to follow (ie DOH tracking) and which to use. #random2

How many people use a real bug tracker? We use a project management tool for our bug tracking and it SUCKS!
What tools do you use for project management/bug tracking?2 -

Question for data science people. Do you know some good multi purpose self tracking platform? Something like exist.io but more advanced? I want to setup custom tracking1

If we’re concerned about Big G tracking our location without our consent, I’m wondering why there’s actually less complains about SIM cards being trackable. They don’t even need an internet connection to get your location, and there’s no way to turn it off.

Not sure what's worse, finding a bug in my code or waiting in a garage for 3 x tyres to be fitted and tracking to be done on my car! 😱1

Okay soo I’m not a database guy.. I’m an embedded engineer but I’m helping one of my interns make a hardware tracking database... so we are tracking assembled products (dev samples).. but also tracking the pcbs within the product.. depending on the product it might have more than one pcb or contain other components to track.
The question is how would I set up the relationship in the tables, so depending on the say “type id” of the product it would link to a table full of feilds specfic to that “type”.. say the product is of type phone and has a pcb of this and a camera of that.. blah blah blah.... but say another product is of type “washing machine”.. which has no screen, it has a different pcb, but also has other things..
There would be a type table .. washing machine, phone, tv, camera, pcb, ecu.. etc.. but those type would need their own tables...
I guess the question is how to relate a field to different tables depending on the value of the field... is this portion all done thru query results and logic rather than pure data base schemas?
What would be the question in terms of database lingo to google search the answer lol2 -
Lol. Another day, another (or just the usual) big tech company just takes us from behind.
This time? Oh Google is just spamming me because they "found malware" on a tracking code. There's nothing. Except competition.
They had to email me about every "malware" in EVERY fucking workspace version. In random order, eventually effecting the live version. Thanks. I really needed those 30 emails to know. -
I am an Automation QA. I logged in a small issue, which eventually cascaded into a larger one. An issue which started with only the QA and DEV now has the attention of the directors as well.1

If you live in a relatively small town and someone comes up to you and ask you to make an employee tracking android app, and also some kind of admin panel for that(also in android).. how much would you ask him to pay, if you're just a college student?19

Is it necessary to check the tracking progress again again when you are getting swags from kaggle?

Does anyone know of any good opensource time tracking software with a focus on privacy?
I don't trust the proprietary stuff but it's useful software1 -
Was working a record keeping system for the Airport for tracking departures and arrivals and some COVID-19 data
ended up realizing that the stack i had gone with wasn't gonna cut it
Had to port the whole thing to a new web framework realizing that the one i had gone with made some operations a bit complicated -
Anyone know how to fix this efficiently? I'm calculating Realized gains but the output is ~ $120.
Because it's using the avg cost as the sales price of each share.
However what it should do sell the shares using FIFO.
But I can't think of how to efficiently track the purchase prices to use without replaying all the trades and tracking every single share that is bought and sold.

Tracking/logging hours, how do you do it? Is there some decent software for Linux that does this?
I wanna start tracking my time doing specific tasks, so I'm just wondering what other ppl use, if at all hehe1 -
I know it doesn't really exist in one solution, but I need management software to keep track of customers (crm), projects, products, licensing and contracts, and time keeping. Right now we are using MSCRM (ugh), and old homebrew project/time tracker written in Perl spaghetti (double ugh), email (sigh) and handwritten notes (kill me). Now I suddenly find myself with a budget (somewhat) and the authority to actually fix things. Any ideas would be appreciated.
