Me: good morning, how can I help you?
Client: my ip is blocked, could you unblock it for me?
Me: certainly! What's your ip address? Then I'll have a look.
Client: I'm not giving you my ip?! That's too privacy sensitive.
Me: 😶
Me: 😶
Me: 😶
Me: sir, I'm very keen on my privacy myself but without that information I can't do much for you 😬
Client: ah so you're refusing to help me?
Me: not like that, it's just very hard to lift an ip block for me when I don't know the ip address.
Client: you just don't want to help, fine.

I've been asked to do some investigation at work regarding an IT security incident. Thankfully I've watched plenty of CSI so I'm just working on building a GUI with VB to track the IP...7

Reinstalled my dedicated server and realized (afterwards) that I just erased my entire openvpn/mysql auth setup and I don't have an entirely working copy.
FUCK.
Okay, nothing I can do about that afterwards, setup csf right away, monitored the auth log for a minute and noticed one ip which had just connected and found it weird somehow. Blocked the ip.
Then, one second later, as my console stopped responding and that ip address suddenly looked veeeery familiar, I realized I just blocked myself. (the blocks persist across reboots)
😐
Went to the control panel and hit the reinstall button. Confirmed, and two seconds later I realized I could just have connected to any of my own fucking vpn services to unblock myself.

Omg, when does the Stupid stop? New Zealand just passed a law that empowers immigration officials to compel travellers to unlock their devices. Otherwise, you pay a hefty fine. They are also allowed to copy the data and do God knows what with.
The horrible invasion of privacy aside, it also brings with it some legal hurdles. What if you are making a presentation or report to an investor or someone you have a fiduciary obligation with. You are carrying IP bound by several NDA's and other funding red tape that would end your life if it got out. Are you in breach if the data gets copied by the gov officials? Worse yet you have zero control over what they do afterwards.
I don't think any of this inspires investor confidence.
Government needs to stop touching things!7 -

A third party manages access to a web application I’m supposed to begin using. While accessible from the Internet, they whitelist IP addresses, so it rejects the login credentials if not coming from a whitelisted address.
I provided my external IP address to their support team but the application was not letting me in, so I called their help desk. A support technician said that my IP address was 10.x.x.x, a private IP address. I’m not on the same network as this application, so I did a quick check and realized they are reading my internal IP address from my X-FORWARDED-FOR (XFF) header (yes, my employer exposes this).
I explain to him that the application is incorrectly reading my external (connection) IP address and is instead reading my internal IP address from my XFF header. I also explain that it’s not a good idea to add a private IP address to their whitelist as it somewhat defeats the point as anyone can assign that IP address within their network and expose it via an XFF header.
After talking to numerous support personnel, I came to the conclusion that not a single support person on their team understands basic networking and private IP address ranges.
I finally just said, “Fine. Go ahead and add my internal IP address but keep in mind it will change a lot.”
He then proceeded to “explain” to me how my IP address is assigned by my ISP and should change very infrequently. I explained to him that the IP address their application is reading is actually assigned by DHCP inside my network, but I was clearly wasting my breath.3 -

Weekend projects are fun! Although front end is still a challenge, it looks good enough.
Suddenly got the idea to do something with letsencrypt/nginx wildcard subdomains (*.example.com) so created a project around that now through which you can check what your ip address/user agent/operating system/ip version is (maybe more to come) but due to the wildcard part you can enter quite a number of subdomains which all show the related info.
I'd find it very useful myself, not sure if other people would but oh well!2 -

A few years ago I was browsing Bash.org, and a user posted that he'd physically lost a machine.
A few weeks ago, I'd switched my router out for OPNSense. I figured it was time to start cleaning up my network.
Over the course of tracking down IP addresses and assigning statics to mac addresses, I spotted an IP I didn't recognize.
Being a home network, I'm pretty familiar with everything on the network by IP, so was a little taken aback.
I did some testing, found out that it was a Linux box. Cool.
I can SSH into it. Ok.
Logs show that it's running fine, no CPU/Memory/Harddrive issues. Nice.
So where is it?
Traceroute shows its connected directly to the router... Maybe over an unmanaged switch...
Hostname is "localhost"... That's no help.
I've walked the network 4 times now, and God knows where it is.
I think maybe I'll just leave it alone. If it ain't broke...9 -

Did you know? Microsoft added a new feature.
So if there is an IP conflict, our beloved Windows 10 doesn’t cry with an IP conflict error. Instead it sets an auto configured IP which doesn’t even connect to the network sending the user into confusion and a fit of rage.

I explained him the whole procedure and after he asked me what does the gateway IP means, I explained him that it's a router, switch or another device that know how to forward packets on to other networks and gave him an example like 192.168.100.1 and told him that usually is the router's/switch IP address and is the same IP address as the static IP of the printer but with .1 at the end instead of the last number set. After that he asked me: "Like this? 192.168.100.25.1?"3

I just want to say,
wow the Cloudflare API is awesome.
In less then an hour (from a blank file - to automation and tested) I was able to setup a DDNS task that basically just pulls my public ip (see https://devrant.com/rants/2050450/... for details) comparing it to the current DNS records for and update them if anything has changed in the past 30 minutes.
So kudos to these guys letting me in next to no time having a simple yet elegant way of dealing with my missing static ip.
Why can’t all APis be this simple?3 -

Alright... how the FUCK is an IP address considered personal data by GDPR????
Fucking boomers don't even know what an IP is. Guess what, every website you've ever been to has your IP! It's in your router, your fucking ISP's registry, and in every DNS server within 1000 miles of you!
Imagine thinking your IP gives up private information, god, just fuck me, I hate all of it, idiotic fools fumbling around with shit they don't understand.
...WKO making every developer's life a living nightmare because fucking GOOGLE FONTS stores a copy of your IP for their stupid analytics. You know what? Just don't use the internet either, that needs your IP too. In fact, don't pay taxes either, the tax office has a copy of your address, that's pretty personal information if you ask me! Just live in the woods and survive with the wolves.
I already know the future 'resolution' to this one - store fonts locally, resolve this dangerous "issue"... "waaaahhh fullStackClown! the site is slower now!!!"
...an infinite circle of clownshipness continues...
tune in next week as the world continues to approach it's circus fate!53 -

I hate IT managers, how on earth some become ant form of manager is beyond myself.
I have a server with a hardware firewall. A client, based in the UK, with French offices is saying the server blocking their new French IP. I white-listed their IP address, still no luck.
That was a week ago.
After 4 international phone calls and nearly 30 emails I resolved the "issue".
Their so called "IT Manager" sent over the wrong IP. Instead of it starting with 46.* he sent over an IP starting 42.*, which was in fact being correctly blocked.
Suffice to say I charged the client a lot of money for the wasted time and international rate calls.2 -

Today's GDPR-Bullshittery.
So we are using an open source remote update system for updating our embedded devices.
And today we learned that, that system logs ip-adress'. And low and behold mr.GDPR says that is a no no.
So either we completely drops it, finds a new update system and implements it..
Sift through all the source code of the update system "fix" it and recompile it.
Or we setup a Man in the middle attack on ourselves. To mask the ip-adress'.

Who the fuck comes to the idea of printing the local IP address on the Fucking screen?
Yes, I know that it is not remotely accessable (only when there is no port forwarding set for that ip), but think of that this way: Someone manages to get in that network. Without scanning the network, you would have your first victim. You could analyzer the traffic of that victim and find more victims. And so on8 -

I wrote some simple pen test scripts that automatically get executed on every ip in my fail2ban log.
Ip count: 2500+ in a few days. Probably victims of botnet. Some have mysql, postgres, smb open and many of them support user/pass auth on their ssh.
The scripts were a lot of fun to write but I don't expect much results.5 -
FUCKING CHINESE SUPOSED IP CAMERAS...
First, they aren't Ip cameras, they are p2p cameras with different settings and more limited...
then took me 3 days to open 5 ports for 2 cameras, config the cameras, till they work.
YEY they finally work, can see them over the Internet (no default settings, even changed the Alias), have my Ip camera viewer on the Phone... but one doesn't activate on moviment.. in this 3 days only took 2 pictures with motion detection on and people passing in front of them... the other was working for like 5 minutes... giving black and white 7kb jpgs... after a few teeks... can't make it work again.
Now I have two cameras that I can see if my house is being robbed but no motion detection to warm me, or at least save some pictures on the server to serve as evidence (and maby finally get the team that is robbing one house a day, If they try to rob my house again...).
The cameras are very good as baby monitors or to play around, for 14$ and 20$... (love the 360º ball) , but as security cameras... Unless you have them connected to a security station and with a repeater close by... worthless...
Oh, and they may give me 1 good frame a second or lag to 10+seconds a frame...6 -

I recently upgraded my computer to a ryzen 1700x and 16gb 3600mhz memory and an asus rog crosshair hero vi board(From an 8350)
My pc ran soo smooth, games even more so
The games ran great, but my personal performance went down.
I didn't understand why. Im probably just losing my edge.
I trained and tried. But still, it felt off.
Today I realized that with my new motherboard, I got a new mac address. And my friend is a bit of a neat freak with that stuff. He has a whole system for ip addresses.
So i told him, I wont have the correct ip address. Then he started laughing and asked my to browse to a certain site www.privateinternetaccess.com
There at the top it said: "you are protected by pia"
Devices without an ip address bound to their mac address, will automatically use the vpn according to his rules.
My ping improved by 10-15ms upon getting my normal ip address back and my game performance is back.3 -
Who the fuck thought that carieer grade NAT would be a great solution instead of just switching over to IPv6 and have functioning internet?
I don't want to share my IP with some bastard who fails every reCaptcha so that pictures take 5 fucking seconds for me to fade out and in again.
Neither Chrome nor Firefox have a reliable way of forcing IPv6 if possible so Google still thinks I'm an evil bot.
I'm waiting for my PayPal to be frozen because of "suspicious actions from 'my' internet connection".
I don't want to share my IP. I want to be responsible myself for everything that happens to it.
Please replace that old switches that are too slow to manage serious traffic anyway and are just wasting their power for being turned on so that I can have an IP address to myself2 -
Today I wrote a python messenger bot which listens to only one command;
get ip
It then replies with its public IP address. I figured this would be the easiest hotfix until I fix my dynamic DNS client.
Now thinking of it I could also make an "update domain" command for doing the API call, and then link the two with a loop and minute delay. Marvelous.4 -
I just saw that ARM released their design start IP for Cortex M0 for free to the masses , it’s obfuscated verilog code.
I worked on SoC design based on this in college but it took a lot of paper work to get these file but now they are free to download
This is exciting as this makes a open-source community based microcontroller design possible.
Only missing piece here is the verilog compiler they use is not open source .
Has anyone messed around with Cortex M0 DS + ghdl or iverilog. I am about to start a little side project will update more on this19 -
One question about the GDPR:
Can one say you have to remove all Data about him including things like IP-Bans? Because then you could not punish someone for breaking your rules.

PSA: If you do reverse proxying stuff, prefer unix domain sockets over localhost internet sockets, if it's on the same machine (and if it's forwarded over ssh too). You can even serve HTTP as a unix socket.
Unix domain sockets don't have the overhead of IP, so generally speaking, data will flow to your other process with much less overhead.
I've recently stopped being lazy at this, and it's worth it.3 -

Lost my dedicated internet access due to a SHITSTAIN of an ISP TELIA decided to introduce itself to my connection A SECOND FUCKING TIME in the past YEAR.
Suddenly lost internet and my firewall couldn't figure out that it was supposed to lose all its fucking connections and renew it's IP adress.
Now im connected to this fucking hipe of shit that is the biggest giver of their customers information to anyone who asks, "Hey man, whats the dude who has this IP?, - sure fam, here you go"

"We've got a new opportunity for you."
I'm a fucking rookie. I didn't know the meaning of this sentence. Suddenly, I become the "IP PBX expert" of the society.
"-Okay, it's some networking shit, I thing I'm good at networking shit. Piece of cake.
-Okay great, you have one month to learn how this thing works, because we WILL provide this kind of service."
Damn.
I spent one month learning this shit on my free time, printing RFCs and living in the fucking MATRIX to not fuck up on the very first day doing that, just in case something on the customers' network fucks with the PABX or something like that.
Oh yeah, I forgot: I'm paid 80% of the minimum wage because I am actually not qualified to do my job and I'm spending one week a month to learn how to IT (some french weirdness I think, if not, maybe it's the germans' fault. Also yes, 100% legal).
Today, they announced me that they "changed their mind".
I'm pissed.1 -
I really, really need some help here.
We have a service provider that is utter shit. Due to their shittyness we have a server to which our customers point their domains and then we forward the request to our shitty provider. This worked well until our provider blocked our server's IP.
They can't come up with a reasonable explanation as to why it's happening, and even though they've whitelisted our IP it keeps happening. I've tried changing the server's IP, but it takes 5 minutes and we're blocked again. Probably some traffic that they deem fishy.
Does anyone have any good or bad idea on how to work around this fuckery? The server at our provider is running PHP, so I'm thinking if I can set up some sketchy tunnel or something, but even then it might be caught on a lower level.
I'm really, really grateful for any ideas or advice. Even of the shitty kind.5 -

Is there any alternative to socket.io that doesn't need to expose a server ip directly to any client, needing to set up a full nginx anti ddos/auth config and more?
There is the live-ajax way that requests progress, but it feels more like a hack each time. (especially if the site should be able to handle multiple tabs with different progress)
I thought maybe some framework has live requests inbuilt to update content from a server worker model. (without exposing the server ip)8 -
I love Mikrotik. Just fucking love them. I also love my residential fiber service. Small company. Synchronous 125M service. No caps. Bandwidth is always there.
BUT... They use PPPOE (seriously guys?), and the IP changes on *every single re-connect*. Also: no IPv6 support. I know. I don't need it. But I want it.
Enter DNSMadeEasy's DDNS, Hurricane Electric's 6to4 tunnel service, and my Routerboard AH100x4. I wrote a script that runs on the router whenever my IP changes. It updates my DDNS record, updates my 6to4 tunnel IP using HE's API, and updates my local 6to4 interface's IP.
It just works. My public IPv4 may change, but the /48 IPv6 networks on my LAN side stay fully routeable.4 -
So I reinstalled Ubuntu server and set the ip to 204, but I forgot that I assigned a static ip to it in my dhcp. I guess it has two IPv4 addresses now? How? Only one NIC 🤔3

So easy to DOS a whole software company.
Someone (accidentally) started a script or similar, generating so many requests on StackOverflow that our IP got banned.
In the company chat people already joking how they cannot work. This is "critical infrastructure" in 2018: faulty IP in our network is taken offline. Let's see if we can access SO again today.1 -
Tomorrow our small company moves to another small office. I don't believe that Internet connection or our ip addresses works correctly. it should work and I need those ips for connection to client servers.6

Look at this easy piece of code(that I added) from an Asp.NET Core 2 template project(MVC). I needed only to add this piece of code to WebHost.CreateDefaultBuilder() (in the Program.cs) to be able to setup a working WebServer which will listen and answer on that IP(local network machine IP) and port, then I opened that port from my modem on this local IP, then used DynDNS with noip.com, tested out on my smartphone with 4G connection and it does work!
This is the EASIEST web project setup and test that I've ever tried and that let me showcase something from my machine to the entire world! :')

My friend and me sit next to each other in the class.
One day, he tell me about his family. they have code equivalent of most common English words.
when the COVID-19 pandemic occur in our country, his father warn everyone in the house by saying
stay.at("127.0.0.1")
wear("255.255.255.0")
everyone start to

127.0.0.1 is a loopback address. aka localhost

to;dr: I think I'm retarded. I don't know how to networking.
got Proxmox set up on my server... sorta. I suck at networking. I bought a domain name, and I'm trying to have each container have a subdomain of the domain name I bought. each container has a unique internal IP address, but they all share the host's public IP address. so after a couple hours of googling, I THINK what I need to do is run a reverse proxy server on the public IP and route each subdomain manually to an internal IP address with something like nginx..... or am I retarded?3 -

So, I started fiddling around APIs which returned data in JSON and parse that data in PHP and it feels so good.... Past 3 days I've been in deep learning PHP and practically $this is the best thing....
I need recommendations for such APIs, so far I've used

What would you recommend, let me know..1 -
When I found out that the server I use weirdly implements SSH login.
For some very odd reason (probably a historical one,) you have to access the web-app console and press a button TO GRANT SSH ACCESS TO THE F*<KING IP ADDRESS FROM WHICH I PRESSED THE BUTTON. The server blocks the wrong IP addresses outright. And only one active allowed IP at a time. This totally obliterates my plan to perform CD on this server. Why can't I just register public keys?
Then I learned several months later that they introduced a new server plan that *does* support the public-key registration.
I'm divided on whether to change my plan in exchange for a rather significant increase in the monthly cost.3 -

I have a Server with the IP address
x.x.233.61
For clarification, this is the public IP, it does not start with 192 or 172 or whatever local IP.
When I pinged 8.8.8.8 it said
From x.x.1.1: Destination Net Unreachable
After asking my Hoster what this IP address was, he said it would be the router.
In a traceroute to 8.8.8.8 this IP never appears.
Since these ping problems are now fixed, this IP never appears anywhere. If it really is the Server racks router, is there any way to get that IP in Linux?4 -

So I had a printer ticket today at a school. School recently had an IP conversion done and apparently this specific Printer wasn't add to the Network..got the printer added. Confirmed the Drop was activated and made sure Network settings were configured properly with correct IP. Was able to talk to the Printer after pinging the IP and ran test print... Nothing printed out. weirdest thing. Whenever I hit print test page. I noticed the printer would say receiving Data for a quick sec and go away.. after some research found out this printer doesn't take the Basic Generic Driver. Needs to be specific to the Model. . After updating to the right driver. Printer is printing.4

TL;DR Jump to the bottom, putting question first seems strange.
I got 2 servers sharing 1 external ip, i use one server for x y z and the other for a b c, so they dont use the same ports.
I got told i would need 1 dedicated ip per server, and i refuse to believe that since everything works fine. However, some things would definitely be alot easier having an ip per server.
So, does anyone have experience with getting an additional ip for your home connection?6 -
So I changed my FB account password and it gave me email notification with an ip address. And then when I logged in it gave me another notification email with a different IP address this time. Should I be concerned about my network security? This is just SO ANNOYING!!!2

how to stop a Android phone from changing IPs
hey guys
Don't know why, sometimes my Android server changes IPs (without restart), that fucks the exit of services....
Like, don't know why, http always works even when IP changes
but WebDav stops working.... I mean, I can use inside the network but I want to access it from the outside.
Thanks8 -

Okay, so, I have a functional snort agent instance, and it's spewing out alerts in it's "brilliant" unified2 log format.
I'm able to dump the log contents using the "u2spewfoo" utility (wtf even is that name lol... Unified2... something foo) but... It gives me... data. With no actual hint as to *what* rule made it log this. What is it that it found?
All I see are IDs and numbers and timings and stuff... How do I get this

Hello, I'm kinda stuck in this problem: Lets say, I want to give each of my users a dedicated IP address. How do I do it? & what's the best way to do it with python?
No need to share code, just some instructions/guideline would perfect. Thanks in advance.19 -
Do you hand craft each IP packet in binary before you send it out through the network? No. Who cares. We're computer scientists and the entire field is built on layers upon layers of abstraction.

Someone posted a fix to a 5 years old problem that Docker as a company thrown into dumpster (moby) for years.
From the README there it's well researched and it seems they know what they're doing.
The whole daemon is one single file with only 300 loc, totally manageable for everyone if they want to scrutinize.

Question about linux iptables. I am currently blocking all access and whitelisting only when my users launch my software. When software is launched a socket client is also launched, it connects to socket server, identifies itself with a password and disconnects. If given password by socket client is correct, then socket server whitelists the users IP by executing the following command: " iptables -I INPUT -s userIP -j ACCEPT".
My problem is that now I have lots of duplicates of IP's whitelisted and as far as I've heard I should not go over 25k iptable rules.
So my question is how to check if ip is already whitelisted, in order to avoid duplicate iptable rules for for same IP?
Obvious solution would be to store whitelist somewhere (mysql/txt) and double check before whitelisting ip, but maybe there is an easier way to do this?4 -
does anyone know a hosting service that allows installing 3rd party SSL certificate (Comodo) FOR FREE, WITHOUT buying overpriced 70$/year additional dedicated IP?4
