My boss typed up a GitLab ticket that looked like it took at least an hour to make. Screenshots, diagrams, how to reproduce the bug, dreams, hopes, desires, dinner recipes, marriage advice, how to diversify a portfolio. Honestly, the whole 9 yards.
The bug fix was changing a SQL Inner Join to a Left Join. 10 seconds.14 -
"You make websites?! I need a website! For a great client like me, it would look great on your portfolio! So you wouldn't want money right?!"
Yeah mate, cause communism won the war and I can live off kindness, puppies, and rainbows.9 -
Made a github.io portfolio website. Showed it to my friend. Asshole copied the whole code from the repo and made one for himself. Didn't even bother to fork the repo or even change the contents of the website. Just removed my name and photo and added his! 😡😡17

When I was looking for an internship...
- Hello, I noticed your cv and you have a great portfolio! Are you familiar with responsive design?
- I have a basic knowledge on that, i am not an expert.
- Ok, can you come for an interview on Monday?
-Sure
Monday morning....
Interview with CEO...
- What's your experience with responsive design?
- I have a basic knowledge on that, i am not an expert.
- Sorry I need someone expert
- But the job is for junior dev and it's an internship
- Yes but man hours of someone to training you will be a cost for me.
- Ok, thank you
(Step before closing the door)Btw you should had check my portfolio, 4/8 websites are responsive.4 -

Interviewer: I don't understand. With a resume and portfolio like yours you shouldn't be applying to companies like us. You should be setting your sights on companies like Google/Meta. You'd be bored here after everything you've done so far. I know we're offering more money than your current position but you're worth more believe me. I'm going to keep looking, and so should you. But you need to aim higher.

I created a my portfolio using ReactJS and actually open sourced the whole thing. Within just a few weeks, its got 67 stars, 38 forks, 3 watches, 1 issue, 1 pull request, and so on.
People out of nowhere messaged me in my whatsapp, skype, facebook to help them in React.
People out of nowhere wanted to hire me, even though I'm still working in a company.
People out of nowhere messaged me just to tell me, how much they liked my work and appreciated it for open sourcing it.
It felt awesome! Like, I can't explain how amazing it felt! ^_^8 -

This is something I think about a lot. Value of Licenses in open source! As long as it is open source people don't seem to care much about the license attached to it.
There is this portfolio a girl desiged and created herself and made it open source. And she clearly states that she spent hours of time designing it so if you use this then do make sure give credit in the footer saying she designed it. Then I see a lot of people using her repo as their own with zero credit to her. That's just awful.29 -
Hey Guys,
I just started work on a new (personal) project for my portfolio and I don't know too much about design, so I'm hoping you guys can give me some feedback.

Applied for job. CV says I've been a web developer for over 6 years. Js included.

Why even is Microsoft Teams?
Why does it suck so bad? Why is it a memory hog? Why does the ELECTRON desktop app not have native ARM64 support neither on Windows nor macOS? Why is it even an Electron app? Why the web version does not work with Safari (then again, barely anything more complex than my portfolio site works on Safari)? Why is the UI from 2016? Why is it preinstalled with Windows 11? Why the pre-installed Windows 11 version is a completely different entity? Why the preinstalled Windows 11 version does not work with school/work version of Teams calls?10 -

recruiter used some blog post, a baseline for frontend developers (pretty neat post btw), to asses my skills. she read the subheadings of the post and asked me to rank myself 1-5. i find this way of assesments as idiotic as having percentage representation of skills on idiotic portfolio sites. i mean wtf does it mean that you know 80% of html??? but that s another rant. so she goes:
rec: javascript?
me: 5
rec: git?
me: 5
*continues with other subs*
rec: the fine manual?
me: excuse me?
rec: how would you rate yourself in the fine manual?

Do you know what really bothers me for no reason? Developers that have bars on their portfolios displaying a percentage of their skill. WHERE ARE Y'ALL GETTING THIS NUMBER FROM? This really shouldn't bother me, but it does. If life was a video game, you'd be able to open your stats UI, and get these percentages, but where are they getting these numbers from? I've seen some websites that people put SUPER specific number (87%, 36%). Are you 87% of the way to being an expert in NodeJS development? I don't understand. I'm not hating on these people, please don't get offended if you have this on your website :)7

After coaching for Django Girls organization and GirlScript Summer of Code, it can be known I clearly have a thing for Django. So I decided to make a new Portfolio from scratch and this time, using Django (seemed a good idea as I wanted to migrate my blogs from Medium to the portfolio).
So, I made the project, got a domain name and hosted it on Heroku. Then it struck me to make my portfolio open source so everyone can use it to make their own! I am looking forward to add a lot new features and improve the existing ones. Here’s a link to it: https://github.com/hmangukia/...
Do create an issue if you feel something needs to be improved!
Projects, Blogs and Social Media handles can be added from the admin panel. If the user does not have coding background, the installation process might be tough. That is why, I am looking forward to add the Sign Up functionality so that the user does not have to go through all that hassle of installing and hosting the project.
If you are wishing to use this to make your Portfolio, please go through the installation steps in readme.md. I would be more than happy to help you install and host on Heroku if you get stuck :)5 -

Dear Devranters, since recruiters love personal websites (and I'm looking for work), I spent the last two days making my own personal site using all the tools I know, including some 3d modeling of the stack I know
DO YOU HAVE YOUR OWN SITES? can you share so I can compare? thanks.
site is here https://bransongitomeh.github.io and I'm attaching the 3D render of my stack done in blender and rendered using cycles
the site itself is done in HTML and CSS is using some paid bootstrap template and I put it all together using https://github.com/BransonGitomeh/... so its minified and stripped down (could do more) and it's cute I think.
I'm not sure if recruiters care if I should use react and vue and angular, lol. I figured I should use the right tool for the Job.
what do you think?39 -

This is going to sound like a ridiculous question, but how do you all find both the time and the interest to work on side projects for your portfolio / GitHub? I always seem to start strong, get burned out, and can never find the inspiration to break away from the 9-5 of my day role to work on coding something else... Where do you find ideas? Designs? Concepts? Interesting solutions? I'm in desperate need of building some GitHub repos for my portfolio... 😅😰7

How effective is to have my own webpage where I can show my portfolio for the company recruiters?

Just seen the website of a local web agency, poked around through their portfolio and found out that they were using PHP 5 and JQuery 2. For websites opened less then a year ago , and the designs were so bad and old they almost made me cry.
How do they manage to get away with that is beyond me (as it seems to be a quite successful agency)3 -
Devs with young kids: how the hell do you do it?
I am a foster parent for my cousin who is 4 months old and I don’t know how in the fuck to make this work. How do you do it? How do you balance code and kid?
For reference I work full time at a tech support place, I go to school full time, and I’m trying to pivot into software development, which means any free time is spent coding/studying code/building a portfolio. Problem is I don’t have free time because of the baby. How in the hell do people do this.3 -
Today I decided to turn an RFC5545 RRULE implementation I had made a few months back for a project in Rust into a cargo package, it would have made a fine addition to my portfolio since I was positive some people would find it useful. Turns out someone else had the same idea as me around the same time I did, but already published a package with it and, worst of all, the dude seems to have made it better than I ever could.
Welp, guess I'll just throw my code away, use his package in my project and maybe contribute a bit to it if I find any issues.

I applied for a dev job, ofc _without_ looking at their references before sending my candidature.
Turns out 80% of their references are porn sites...
Most of them are quite big as far as I can tell, but I don't really wanna work for a company like them. I'm still young, I don't really think it would make a good impression later on if I'd had a company who makes 80% porn sites in their portfolio in my CV when posting for more serious stuff.
And they asked me for a phone interview. Should I accept it?5 -
TAP - The Art Project.
Started in my college, been working on it for nearly a decade now and during the pandemic I was able to find co-founders and we built an amazing MVP.
But now I got busy with my new job, which is super fun, tech guy got married lol and design guy is little lost.
But over the years, experimenting with people, ideas, and everything around, my idea evolved into something which is loved by everyone I shared it and I can see a huge potential in it.
But meh! Fuck it. Because I am too bored and would rather order a practice pad and start learning to play drums (my childhood dreams), attend more gigs, and live a happier life.
Because the heart wants what the heart wants :)
For the curious ones, you can test the MVP at https://www.tap.prismo.net
And there are few other side projects that I completed which can be found on my portfolio page
https://www.floydimus.prismo.net
I am just wondering shall I redirect my main URL to my portfolio page or keep it pointed to TAP?7 -

The garbage recruiters are trying to sell is insane.
Don’t scrape the bottom of the ocean trying to pass barnacles off as salmon!
Just because someone can make computer go “beep boop” -- and you can’t — says more about you then it does about them.
Do they have a single thing in their portfolio that is even a little better than the output of the average “Learn x in y mins” video on youtube? Let that stock simmer for a little longer before you serve it!
Nothing in their portfolio at all you say? They’ve never once written code unless they were forced to? Top talent! Hired!
They scored 80% on your screening test? Wow! My dog scored 90%.
Modern day snake oil peddlers the lot of them.8 -

I was designing and building a portfolio page for a photographer. He mostly does black & white portraits with either a white or black background so I had the idea of splitting the page into a light and dark side (Star Wars joke definitely intentional).
I worked waaay too long on a *diagonal* CSS wipe animation when the user switches sides and I was quite proud of it.
Half a year later we realize that basically no one has noticed the switch button. Analytics confirmed it was less than 4% of visitors. 🤦♂️3 -

Focus on projects, not tests.
If you want people to be able to code, judge them by their ability to code.
Plus that way your graduates have a portfolio as opposed to a grade list that says nothing about their usefulness in the market.
If you must do tests, at least mimic real world conditions:
- Digital, no paper
- Internet allowed (have rules on copying SO if you must)
- BYOD, let people work in their customised environment -
Second job
Was the lead dev on an ios/android project. I knew that i was not gonna spend much time there and was using them to add shit to the portfolio. my app is in the playstore and seems to be working fine, can't get credit for it and can't bitch about it either since i burned all bridges with that company. the app is a trucking logger logistics ba type of deal for a local company.
i was paid $400 dllrs a week. Yeah I know, ain't shit in the U.S much less Texas. But the thing gave me perspective:
Android development sucks big balls and ios is way easier and nicer on devs.2 -
Here is an idea.
What if web designers make their own portfolio with "The Wayback Machine"?
It is free, reliable, fast, and universal.

soo after finishing 1 year of my 2 yr CS program, i moved back to my hometown so my partner wouldn't have to keep commuting for her career. couldnt get a cs job here with no experience and only 1 yr of school and like basically no portfolio to show for myself, i took a customer service job in a tech company with a lot of support for career pathing.
end goals are to end up working for their software dev team, mid goal is to switch into their web dev team from customer service since the career pathing is WAY easier from customer service to web dev, then web dev to sw dev rather than customer service straight to sw dev
so in the meantime i need to be practicing and building my portfolio but FUCK i have NO motivation and with coronavirus fucking up my life and everybody elses all i wanna do at the end of the workday and on weekends is melt into my bed in a semi-comatose state
i woke up early today to get some work done on my portfolio but all im doing is watching grey's anatomy and playing mobile games
i used to feel so motivated and excited to code but the excitement is gone and now even doing stuff for myself is a lot more like work than play
just need to rant it out rn4 -
So my boss wants me to build his portfolio website, and he says to me. "Yeah do whatever you want, just don't make it look like a blog." What does that even mean!? 😨6
-
Ok devRantia. I have a pretty important question. I need project experience and I have zero ideas. Also i'm 14 and can't exactly be reputable enough to land a freelance job om upwork. I am trying to build a good portfolio so that universities or companies will take me a little more seriously when I apply. Any ideas on how to go about this or some projects for me to do?10
-
What do you think about having a portfolio website for junior devs? Does it help, does it not? How could I promote mine?13
-
Side project I wish I could finish... updating my resume and building a portfolio so I can get a new job.1

Do you all have your own VPS server to host your own portfolio website ? If yes provide me with a decent one.7
-
Maintain an up to date resume and work portfolio. Contribute to open source projects. Network with other professionals. Pursue professional development.

I've actually really enjoyed getting to interview people. Mostly because I'm given the freedom to ask reasonable questions. At this point, my favorite is asking fresh grads to come up with requirements to make their favorite portfolio bit production-ready.
I want a list of things you need to fix because they're duct tape and bubblegum, but a lot of people sit there with passwords in plaintext and suggest new features. -
Have a friend who wants to enrich his coding portfolio but is scared of people copying his more serious code if he puts it up on github.
Told him it's all about open source and he could just keep the more casual code up there while giving access to serious projects on request from a company, but it's not very ideal, is it?
What would you tell him?7 -
I want to start a new website that I can use as a hub for all my side projects.
Will double as a portfolio site but mostly it will just let me share my ideas with friends.3 -
!dev Just realized I think I have a over diversified stock portfolio...
Now half 30 different stocks... Some of them etfs....
So many possible themes... Health care, ev, tech, recovery, US vs China debt...
How do you decide?8 -
Hey guys,
I just released my first decent npm package: https://github.com/zzyyxxww/abides
It took more work than I expected and releasing it means a lot to me since I had a non existent portfolio before this.
I wrote it because I didn't like the de facto validators and I just wanted to do things my own way.
i know creating js packages is usually ridiculed, but at least I created this with a conscience and good code coverage.
thanks for reading.4 -
The founder of the company saw my profile in linkedin. He dm me and said that he and his co founder reviewed my profile and saying that they were interested to hire me because my profile was good. And after a week. I officially joined the team, eventually the person that contacted me admitted that he's msg is just templated and sent to all related developers. I realize that they didnt even check my portfolio I thought they appreciate it. FML!
-
As someone who often interviews devs, I can say you should be honest about your abilities. Just because you tweaked someone's Python code doesn't mean you are a Python expert. Stick to the facts on your resume/cv. Also, have a good code portfolio. That shows the interviewer much more than a degree does.4

I want to create an interactive portfolio in a terminal design where you kinda have to type commands to get information. There would be a list of all available commands. Would you guys do it like that or would a normal/simple portfolio be better?7

Should I switch from Electrical Engineering to Comp Sci?
I am about to start my second semester at college. I took programming 101 and realized I might like coding more than engineering. All the classes I have taken are inside the Comp Sci. Courses in my university so I would not be losing time if I switch now.
Also I started messing around with Android Studio with some friends and that made me realize how easy comparison it is to make a good portfolio and have sideprojects.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.6 -
Hey all devRanters!
Comment down your dev portfolio urls,
I am building mine so need some cool inspiration and ideas.
Extra points if it looks different from the traditional portfolios.10 -
My fascination for programming began around 13, when i started developing plugins for my minecraft server in java.
Had an awesome time with creating plugins for some fully custom servers with relatively large playerbases(50-200 players, depended on the time of the day).
This sparked something in me, and i started creating crapp ass "portfolio" sites for myself with php and mysql login and registration forms. After that I got into some basic c# abd had fun with some cute console/form applications.
And here comes today, in the process of picking up more css, php, html, js knowledge, probably heading towards react or vue.
I just love programming to death. -
Actually getting started and learning to plan for a project is also important. Making a portfolio-website for myself with basic web tech and Firebase. Wish me luck! :D2
-
This week I'm all sorts of determined. It great.
I'm 18. Lived in a commune cult style campus religious place. Homeschooled and never finished highschool.
Just about all of my programming experience is self taught. Currently working as a full stack web developer for the place I'm living at.
I got a hand me down car and got my permit. I'm studying for my GED.
I want to build my portfolio and get an job. A degree is a cool idea but that's a lot of money I don't have.
I'm tired of passively living my life to other people whims. I sound really naive but fuck it.6 -
I'm currently duckduckgoing "top 10 portfolio designs" and stuff like that because I'm looking to create something myself and learn some React along the way, but at lot of these pages seem so tryhard and self pretentious.
ESPECIALLY this fucking thing: http://piotrswierkowski.com/home9 -
so I am thinking of a couple of projects to put on my portfolio, I could follow along some YouTube "build a ....." tutorials but I hate that, super boring, so I'm thinking of building this web based database client for the browser using react and node, I want something that universal, like a swiss knife of database clients on the browser, I'll just stick to fetching and Inputting data until I realize it's a waste of time and kill the project2
-
What are people's thoughts on having a personal website/portfolio?
I've set one up on GitHub pages with my custom URL, mainly to host SQL tutorials etc that I make, but do employers look at them?5 -
I can't entirely remember the code of my own web portfolio that I wrote a few months ago! The code is not even that bad, but I'm just tweaking stuff and building more on top of these ruins. There's a cost to rewriting something from scratch and it's not worth it. I'm using Jekyll and Github pages.1

Im having a sort of dilema. I recently started taking freelance work for web developement (and design ack) and Im uncomfortable with the state of the industry. Ill explain: Say if I bid a client for a simple 1-3 page site w contact form (a new page, not migration) My suggestion is to use djangocms, django, or just static html/css/js (ie bootstrap), which produces clean, fairly secure, and fast sites. Of course I can throw a templated unoriginal wordpress site together in a few hours 2 days latest, so I offer that option as a sidenote on the bid, charging almost 2x more. For some reason I dont understand they choose the wp shitshow. I explain all the reasons that not the way to go( which I wont list, if u dont know, u never used it. google up) but they dont care abt the details, they rather pay more for shit job. OFC I reluctantly deliver what they want, but as a result my portfolio is full of unoriginal shit Im not happy showing off. I have a few sites Ive done on the side my prefered way, but they not deployed and sit in my github for all intents n purposes unviewable to potential clients.
I want to be proud of my portfolio, and it to be a representation of what Im capable of. BUT, I gotta eat, and work is better than no work.
There are so many "wordpress designers" oversaturaring the field and it lowering the overall standard of what we are capable of. I just begining my dev journey, but if I cant have a body of work Im proud of, theres no way I can see doing this the rest of my life, and that makes me really sad. My love of developing, coding, and IT/computers in general drove me to change careers from audio engineering to web development, and the fact that this fucking mr. potatoe head of a CMS is slowly turning that love into hate really pisses me off. So Im ending this !rant looking for hope.
Your thoughts?1 -
Should've posted this on Monday:
Feeling good about myself.
Customer wanted a project prototype done until the 14th of this month. I had it ready and working by the 3rd.
Yippie. I'm apparently competent enough.
I'm gonna ask if I am allowed to put a screenshot with censored names and whatnot on my portfolio.1 -
Here's what's on my mind.
I am building portfolio website as my first project. But I am doing this going the self taught route. I do not know a single soul in the developer space. And none of my friends or family are technical.
How can I get feedback on my site?7 -
Anybody working on any good open source projects at the minute? I'm looking on expanding my portfolio and getting more hands-on in community based projects.3

Took a week off from my retail job, swatted up on some HTML, built the most basic About Me/Portfolio that I could.
Having no background or experience meant that I needed something to send to people when applying for jobs.
It worked.2 -
So something sparked the thought at work today, so I checked to see if my name was available as a domain. Turns out both .com and .co.za were avalible. So cheap I couldn't resist
Guess my portfolio has a prettier name now2 -
To any Java developers. I been programming for about 2 years on and off. Im pretty good when given a task. But from your experience. What techniques, or methodologies should a Java programmer know of he wants to really get serious and get a job? Do you guys have portfolio projects?12
-
Towards the end of my art degree we were encouraged to setup portfolio sites. Most people used iWeb but I went to a DreamWeaver workshop and built mine and my girlfriend's.
Then I got into WordPress, read some good books and decided to pursue a career in it. Got my masters while working part time as a postman and my first job as a front end dev with a medium sized fintech.3 -
For all the professionals - I really do not find my course in Software Engineering challenging and I even finished first in my class last year. I have been programing in java and javascript with spring and angular but now I am focusing on android. Do you reckon I should stay and finish my degree or just make a portfolio and apply for a job in the industry? Thanks in advance21

Remaking my portfolio site using VueJS. Finish that character design sketchbook I started years ago. And move out of my parents' house.

Wanting to write some useful open source Java for my github portfolio. Biggest issue is that somebody has already done it for anything that comes to mind :(3

Is it worth having a personal site/portfolio if you aren’t a freelancer?
I asked on LinkedIn and the response was that personal websites are a bit 90s.
I am, slowly, making a github pages site, and I know no one is really going to be interested in my thoughts on certain topics etc, but I felt it would be a bit more attractive than just a link to my github account.
Do employers care about portfolios/github accounts etc? Or are the only interested in CVs and certificates?
If it’s the latter how do you demonstrate your skills, especially if all of your work is proprietary?2 -
What do you think is the best TLD for a portfolio? I bought a .me domain but I'm thinking of changing it to .net or .dev...7
-
Can someone please explain to me, in the most dumbed-doen way imaginable, what the fuck SharePoint is?
Yes, I've Googled it. No, I don't understand. From everything that I've read; it just doesn't function the way I expect it to after reading about it.
Is it used to create company websites which are to be used by staff within the company. Or is it used to create normal websites, that the general public visits (maybe like a portfolio or company website showcasing products with a shopping cart and shit)?
I'm confused.13 -
How to create a decent portfolio?
I'm a mobile dev and almost all tye apps I developed are for private use inside companies.6 -
Finishing my software to predict ice-hoceky results... so I would finally have a portfolio to show for, just in case I decide to drop off of academia one day 😥1

I've just recently finished a front-end, online one. As an experience it was awesome, I had contact not only with my mentor (great guy), but also with a lot of like-minded people. As a finishing touch we had a week of classes with an HR specialist to polish up our portfolio, CVs and to guide is through recruitment process. I can't really say much, as I'm still looking for a job, but I have a good feeling 'bout it all :)

I need your help with ideas for toy projects in android to get a portfolio.
For backend I know node, Python and Java.
I have no idea what to do and I must have something up my sleeve before I can apply for my first dev job.

Hello ranters, I need some help because I want to make a portfolio for my curriculum vitæ and my experiences but I don't know if I should use a framework for this kind of little project.8

So todays issue. Working with slideshow functionality with jQuery and setInterval() and things seem to be working as expected.
That is.. until you leave the page for awhile and come back and see a constant fading of images because the intervals appear to be "catching up" with themselves xD
Luckily, setTimeout() takes care of this issue nicely.1 -
I keep thinking that I need to set up my site for a portfolio or something, but then I remembered that I'm really bad at coming up with designs.
Have tried to look up some other sites for inspiration, but I always get these really impressive sites that me feel even more potato :c2 -
Ok. I got it. I need a portfolio. That will speak for you. I’m working on it. I’m building great stuff. In the meantime. How the heck do I get a job as a junior web developer with no experience. I only have a coding bootcamp and a 4 month internship. All companies want people with experience. You won’t even have an interview without experience. So what’s the strategy then? Looking out for some words of wisdom from fellow devs.4

Looking for hosting Don’t really know who I should go through? I have used host gator and go daddy in the past and would like to try out some new hosting. What would you guy recommend? And why? Budget for the month would be around 15 usd for hosting max. I would like to host my portfolio and as many domains as possible on the hosting. Please help3

so, I have a full time job, and I like it a lot, but I want to make a bit of extra money on the side. where do I start going about finding freelance gigs that are mostly relatively small in scale? I don't have enough free time to take on large scale jobs right now, and mostly I'd just like to build my portfolio/reputation so that I can eventually move into freelance several years in the future.
-
I think the advantage of CS is that it forces you to explore things you might not think interest you, it also gives a general base and vocabulary to speak "the language" of this career. With that said I often look to hire people without CS degrees but that has the motivation to learn by themselves (I'm self-taught). The degree doesn't say much about, but if during it you explore, stay curious, look beyond 20y/o outdated advice from some professors you'd get the most out of it.
Start making a portfolio even before starting college and stay curious! -
I think I'm a dev.... sigh.
After I quit I didn't do it but out of all my interests and hobbies this one kept bugging me. So yeahhhhhh. I'm a dev.
Speaking of. Got bored and finally made a portfolio website. It's not great but people were asking for a link to my cV. So let me know what you think and I can get around to adjusting.

Have you ever been in the situation "I need to leave this job, my health demands it... But I can't, I need money" ?
What did you do? 😢
I would freelance but I have no idea where to start to find clients...
I would also stop for a while to make a proper portfolio or GitHub profile, since I always worked for companies with code discretion, I have nothing to show to new employers 😕2 -
Should I...
1. Develop a consumer facing web app with free access and use supported by ads?
2. Develop a consumer facing Web app with some free features coupled with premium features using a subscription model?
3. Develop a consumer facing web app with no monetization strategy strictly as a portfolio project?6 -
For those of you .Net people out there (".Net sucks" Stallman fellators need not apply), what would a few practice .net core web apis and MVC projects cost to host on Azure? They wouldn't be touched except by me and any people who want to see my portfolio projects directly, so I think that doesn't count as time for cost, but I'll be honest and say I don't entirely get their pricing.1

It's really important to have a portfolio?
What's the value of a beautifull and fullfill portfolio? How it can help?6 -
I was just curious but don't need it, the domain would be great for a personal blog/portfolio. First come first serve.
Your welcome. -
There are literally hunderets, here are a few of them:
- making a movie you watch wearing vr devices, so everything is filmed with 360° cameras and you can walk around
- an app that helps musicians understand complicated rythms
- my online portfolio
- seting up my data derver
- autonomous flight (bigest problems are gov regulations)
- hologram screen -
had a teamviewer session today with a guy who listed web development in his portfolio. needed to start a browser session and saw a wordpress link in the favourites. respect gone to 0 now

Not a rant: trying to start a GitHub portfolio for future recruiters or companies to see what i have done, I cannot seem to find inspiration on what to do, any ideas or tips?3

Stop in a middle of a project and come back a few months later. Decide to rewrite everything in latest flavor of JavaScript, then stop in the middle of rewrite. rinse and repeat... This is why I don't have an impressive portfolio yet.

Making a personal website for prospective employers to see my resume and code. I am currently a sophomore computer science student. What got you guys/gals hired?3
-
First rant!!
I've got into an impasse.
I'm working as a mobile developer for one of the well known multinational corporations. I am working here for 1.5 years, it's my first job and I'm already a team leader. It doesn't mean that this is my programming experience. The problem is that I'm feeling that this job stops me from growing on personal plan. I have no more time to work on my personal projects, i have no real portfolio, projects made for the company cannot be included in my portfolio and so on. And also the payment isn't real good so i can't quit and allocate my full time to my own projects. And without a good portfolio i can't get my own customers.
What do you guys would do in my situation.3 -
Im new to devRant and i’m just looking if i could get any tips, example projects i could do to fill my portfolio? Im trying to sharpen my skills in web dev (both back & front + React)question web development html nodejs react javascript frontend css learning to code expressjs api backend4

Portfolio websites...are they good, bad, or meh?
As I’m already contemplating making a move from my current (first) dev job due to the fact I’m a glorified data entry clerk, I got thinking about creating a personal/portfolio website.
I already have a domain name, I registered it years ago and just keep renewing it. So I’ve pointed that to my GitHub pages site, and will do some work on this over the weekend.
My question is, are they worth the effort? Would a prospective employer bother to take a look if it was on my cv or linked in?
What pitfalls should I avoid?4 -
Would putting a website that helps people download pdfs/ebooks for free (aka illegally) on my portfolio/resume be a stupid idea?8

Is giving out business cards at a college career fair tacky? I recently got mine in the mail since I finally have my personal website deployed, and want to make a good impression / show I'm serious since I will be graduating soon. Haven’t been active on devRant in a few months, spread across different platforms and university work. Just finished a class working on a portfolio piece and that took a lot out of me combined with several life events in consecutive weeks. Just doing the bare minimum homework and had my nose stuck in video games the past couple weeks since finishing that portfolio class. Feeling a lot better going into this new week though and ready to get back to working on another portfolio piece while learning some advanced NodeJS and MVC architecture.

Hello fellow Ranters,
I'm in need of some help, I want to try building a small website, like maybe 4 pages worth of work for my uncle. But I'd like to build it in such a way that a non-programmer (my uncle) could upload photos to a portfolio section through an administrative console page. I'm doing this mostly to learn how to build something like this and also as a side project to help out my uncle.
From what I've read, I'm thinking that Angular (maybe?) might be the right way to go about building dynamic pages, but I'm not really sure and was wondering what you guys would suggest? If possible can you please also recommend a place where I can find examples for something like this?
Thank you in advance for your help and recommendations, I really appreciate it!!!7 -
Github-gardener is destroying the legitimacy of GitHub as a valid portfolio for applying in high-tech jobs, and it's frustrating. I will never stupe this low, and you shouldn't either.10

I'm creating my personal portfolio website and writing tag line for my header section but I'm not a native English person, I wrote this tag line to all the English I'm currently knew but it is gramitically incorrect and sounds to dumb can a native English speaker help me to write this in better way, Thanks in advance:D
"I'm a self-taught web developer and I've been doing web development past couple of years. I love to make cool stuff for myself and other people and am always open to learning new things, I currently pursuing my bachelor's degree."9 -
Juat started a redesign of my portfolio & this is first time I've actually been genuinely happy with it. Every other time I just say fuck it and launch with a design I'm not happy with because I wasted so much time trying to make it perfect that I'm not focusing time on client work and losing money.
tldr: stoked on my new portfolio design -
I'm thinking of writing a personal website for fun and as a portfolio for my IT projects and hobbies, eg photography.
Currently I'm working with C# and have some Java and Python knowledge, besides meddling here and there with other languages. I've recently started looking into architectures and other stuff.
Do you have any recommendations for into which language and technology I could look into for this project?2 -
Where the FUCK do I look for Web Developer/ Frontend / Backend jobs?
Every resource just says make a github, make a portfolio website and apply to jobs. Indeed! Craigslist!
Seriously? I know some stuff. Where do I apply now? And how do I even begin to make a "resume?" The work experience I have is absolutely irrelevant to software, so I wouldn't use a traditional one. Shall I use some sort of template/website to make a software "resume" as well?
I'd really appreciate a guide on how to get in the damn door. I feel like I'm going against the clock and at a roadblock. Appreciate y la ahead of time 🙂14 -
Honestly my midterm project from college. It was never a production project just supposed to go into my portfolio. Who knew that building a functional social media app in 3 months in a language you never knew is actually SO IMPRESSIVE to people that it alone gets you an internship and a job.2
-
In college, first year, made a website using just HTML and CSS, and now I'm receiving offers from seniors to upscale their portfolio websites, which looks like an early 2000's blog website made by a 6 year old with colour blindness. I may or may not be getting threats #sufferingFromSuccess2

What do you guys put on your about section on a website. I'm a student so don't have much past experience but I want a website to refer people to5

Gawds, creating personal portfolio sites must be the toughest task ever. I've never been great at answering 'what do you do for a living?' questions.
Writing paragraphs of self-praise and mostly fake positive self representations are beyond me. Got to get it done though, have new work to showcase. -
Do you guys have a portfolio website? If so can you leave a link :)
And What do recruiters look at when they are browsing the website?10 -
Finally my portfolio.....

We are supposed to make a portfolio in school explaining who we are and projects that we made. The only problem is that I have not done shit, the only thing that I've done that was only for the most part ripped from a tutorial (everything else might as well been copy pasted) was a calculator that barely works and looks like shit. So I just sat down for hours got nothing done and felt awful.
-
The whole time I've been in school they have been telling me I need an amazing portfolio, LinkedIn and GitHub. From what I keep seeing and can tell... is this all a lie?? What do I actually need to get hired?12

Worst dev sin? Perpetuating the assumption that we'll build your site for free.
In my defense, my portfolio was lacking.1 -
Hi guys. Finally cleared up my time. Well not really but I wanna do something else cause I've been depressed af lately so I wanna try stuff I enjoyed.
Anyway. Last time I got quite a few from here but anyone need help with design/styling of projects? Wanna boost portfolio. Can use sketch or directly code in the styling for you.
For free. Though I wouldn't pizza money haha.
Let me know if you have/need anything
Thanks.3 -
Thinking about rebuilding my portfolio website with React. Has anyone else done this? Would it be worth it?6

So I’m setting up my personal site using GitHub pages with a custom url.
Aside from obvious stuff like a portfolio etc what should I be including?
A full cv/resume or something less formal. It’s also going to have a bit of a blog type thing going on3 -
Just spent an hour salvaging some code from an app project I abandoned so I can reuse it in the future and add what I salvaged to a portfolio of small things I've made.
It was a simple multiple player name menu that generated player objects once the user was done entering names.
Loads of potential future uses.
No point letting it sit inside an abandoned project even if it is somewhat trivial to reproduce. -
Any Web Dev or Design managers out there who interview candidates, should a front end developer have a Github for his portfolio or hosted on his own site? I'm torn.3

Not really the place for this, I know. But I am a crypto coin guy. And I work with numerous coins. I was curious if anyone new of an app the could monitor all of your cryto-coin addresses and give you something of a portfolio value. I am capable of doing so manually but the prices flux a decent amount so it changes from day to day.6

Question: What is the most common way to customize a WordPress site to a specific design?
Guys I've been learning html and css and have just started Javascript. But I'm wanting to create some WordPress sites for fun and so that I also have some stuff in my portfolio.
I'll be creating a portfolio site for af friend who's is a cinematographer.
I don't want to just use a theme but I'd rather create a fully customized website in conjunction with a set design, as I feel like this is what I need to know if I'm going to be getting paid for this in the future.
How does one go about doing this? I've seen many videos but they all seem a bit confusing. Maybe there's a video series that you could point me to.
I'm feeling extremely fucken lost.5 -
Suggest me projects for hobby on Ruby on Rails(intermediate level). ☺️
Anybody can join me too. Would just add it into our portfolios. :) -
As a junior in a print communication agency, my boss wanted me to make their portfolio.
Their requirements were: a full animated flash website (in 2010...). Understand, they had been bought the Adobe license...
After several months of works and ton of alerts about flash death, the website has been deployed.
My boss did not understand why he could not visit the website with its iPhone...
The website had lived 2 months and will was replaced by a static "wix" alternative... So much work for nothing because the boss did not trust a junior dev.
Biggest lesson: Always begin with fast proof of concept to validate your hypotheses for you and for your boss ;) -
Hello ranters.
I have a question. After beating my head about choosing a CMS for the first time, I am still not sure which CMS to use.
The website is supposed to be a portfolio, but the photographer/designer (client) does not have any idea on how to use HTML, which means he cannot update his website regularly.
For me, this first of a kind project.
Using WordPress makes using custom themes a pain.
Using NetlifyCMS, I kind of have to depend on GitHub.
Another idea is to create something similar to Instagram.....where the client can only add pictures.....what are your thoughts guys?....10 -

Fellow Devs,
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I am at a loss. I have applied to several Front-End jobs, both local, and remote. I have personal projects on my portfolio, and I offer to do "homework," that's been assigned while applying for a job. I am currently learning Python, but I don't have a project up with that.
Any suggestions?16 -

Hi fellow devs and sysadmin's I'm currently working on building a portfolio of applications I build and servers I have setup as I'm planning on working freelance I'm already MTA certified and if I had the money also N3 certified if anyone needs a server setup or something like that feel free to contact me on my website https://haazen.xyz.
Feel free to ask me anything to test me or to send me fun assignments to test me or let me learn new things to as I love learning more.3 -
Can't set the cache headers in GitHub Pages. Now people are criticizing my old portfolio site. Great. Thanks GitHub.3

Surround yourself with good bosses, mentors and colleagues. And then talk to them, develop trust. When I feel like an imposter, thinking back of all the times my mentor told me that I'm good makes me feel better about myself and my skills.
Also, keep some sort of portfolio of your successes. And be sure to remind yourself that the portfolio would be empty of you weren't good at what you do. -
I'm working on a portfolio website hosted on Github pages, but I'm struggling for inspiration. (I'm also not a web developer, but this is a learning experience). Do any of my fellow ranters have portfolio websites they've developed to show their skills?1

Fuck, I love soundcloud but as an artist without any reputation, it fucking sucks when you upload a song, get an instant "love" from some random "promoter/bot" without the bot having the decency to listen, and when I look at the bot's profile, they "love" tracks that are not in my genre >_< (and manage to listen 60 minutes-worth of music in 1 minute...)
Not that I care whether people listen or not (it's more an ongoing portfolio to see how my mixing evolves over the years), but at least listen to it for 5 seconds2 -
there is no time in the budget for refactoring the code that is being shipped to live.
the only refactoring i get done is the code going into my portfolio. -
I once used Wordpress for my portfolio. I now feel dirty. I know there are some who wouldn't admit that they use wp sometimes and that's understandable. I think making my own cms would be better. Has anyone of you here done that? What back-end tool did you use?5

Is it reasonable to use materialize for a personal portfolio? I just like the minimalistic and simple appearance, and it makes making responsive layouts a breeze...
Also, I'm tired of using bootstrap for everything7 -
I'm learning how to bundle with webpack. Cool. Exept that I don't have a single project in my portfolio that would benefit from any of it's features. Is this another "enterprise only" thing I can easily ignore in favor for the few <script> tags I'd normally use to hook up VUE or whatever?12

I know how to build mobile apps (design and apps themselves).
I want to open a small services company, but I realized that I will need a website with portfolio of the jobs I did. Im working on gathering a portfolio, but have no idea how to make a proper website for representing my services.
Popular choice seeems to be getting a wordpress theme for $50-$60 modifying it and that's all. Is there a better way to do this and look professional without hiring a web dev?6 -
In order to make my portfolio bigger and more interesting am willing to find a client with a realistic needs to do for him a website almost for free.
Does it works like this ?1 -
Hey guys, asking for web devs, which JS framework did you use for your portfolio? I'll have to learn one of these but don't know what could be nice for everyday use..
Thanks in advance2 -
how the hell do you do backend focused projects for a portfolio??? i feel so uninspired compared to my ideas for showing of frontend skills. backend stuff is just not as flashy by nature, how the hell do I "show off"? my backend chops??? 0_04

Hello developers,
This is my first rant here, I'm a new developer from Egypt, 20yo.
I started learning web development last January and now i have a pretty solid establishment in development.
Till now I'm a MEAN stack - angular(still learning it)
Do i start to apply for jobs right now or do i should wait a few months till i get better, i already have some web applications that can be put into the portfolio.1 -
Is it only me or is it bloody hard to get into freelancing or remote work ?
I am a CS graduate, I have worked for a company that owns an online business. I didn't last a year with them for various reasons but let's just say work in my country is not so great. So I have been trying to get a remote position for few months now without a shadow of a success. I've built a Portfolio with a couple of projects while trying Upwork and some remote working websites with no luck.
What are your thoughts on this, what do you recommend me to do ?2 -
Generally new to programming, building a static practice portfolio site, encounters first few hours of being stumped from coding.
I now understand the struggle of missing semi-colons 🙃 -
Junior angular dev, looking for some fun projects to throw on my github. I haven't done any coding for my public github since I started working full time, so it looks like I'm MIA! Want to show off my newly gained skills :)
Anything html/css/boostrap/js/jquery/angular/jasmine/karma/node I'm down for, or if you've got any fun projects related to web development (backend, DB, etc) that's an unfamiliar language I'd probably take a shot at that too!
I built a portfolio before and deployed it to digital ocean and assigned it to my own google purchased .com, but that's the most "impressive" thing I've done so far.1 -
Did you go to a coding boot camp? Which one? Was it a success? In what ways specifically? Can we see your portfolio? Are you happy?14

Thank you guys!1 -
What can I build on a weekend which I can add in my portfolio and also learn golang. I am a web developer with sound knowledge of react, vue, node, django. I am learning golang.
PS - please suggest the project even if the project is not is golang. I want to improve my current skills also.6 -
By experimenting. By trying to integrate different tech and seeing how things work out.
If something doesn’t work out, you know the problems, if something does work out you have one more way of solving some problems.
(Also by freelancing, adding these successful experimentations into a shippable product and adding it to yoir portfolio) -
looking for minimalist developer personal portfolio examples for inspiration for a redesign of my current site.
i want to keep it basic but i really want something slick yet minimal for a replacement to what i have now - possibly with some nice css animations and whatnot.
(current version: http://jfry.info/)6 -
Depends on when it comes out, often it involves rebuilding my portfolio. Other times it's building a project idea, had a light week at work once and built a small app in Aurelia, then rebuilt it in Vue to test out both and compare them.
When I was looking into PWAs I rebuilt my react native app into react. Lol -
Anyone worked with/for a company called pugpig.com? The company I work for might be partnering with them but we don’t know much about their reputation. Their website portfolio looks a bit ‘sparse’ but I’ve heard good things...

Guys, need your ideas/advice.
I myself am out of ideas here. The 'problem': I started learning React 5-6 weeks ago, made news app, weather app and... that's it. What else should be in every react dev portfolio? Todo app doesn't count. Too easy. ;)
Thanks!2 -
Hello fellow Ranters. Have you made a portfolio? We'd love to see what awesome things you've accomplished. Please share your portfolios

I am starting to build a portfolio for my dev services... Do you know any I can get inspiration from?1

Recently my teachers have started hassling us to get our ‘better’ projects on github for a ‘sorta’ portfolio
I have a simple C# script I wrote for a class assignment many months ago
Inside that script I call an exe created by using pyinstaller on a simple python program to grab info from the web related to the script’s purpose just to see how pyinstaller and web-scraping works
If I put this on github should it be two separate repositories or one with the python stuff in its own contained folder???
Thank you in advance2 -
Getting serious about the website. backed up my images, and this is my starting point.
https://parkcitymedia.github.io
gonna make it more of a portfolio-ish display on the main page. figuring out where i'd like to implement navigation and other such stuff - time to actually sit down and learn some js! -

Hello everyone, I'm looking for an advise, i just move to a new country and i was doing some side projects as a freelance to set my portfolio to start looking for a job here in the USA, can you tell what is the best way to apply for a dev job here? Any other advise is welcome -
I have hoed around in different technologies during my university life, Web dev, game dev, cybersecurity (even got a CEH certificate, the training wasn't adequate tho and it's an expensive field needing all those certs), tried blockchain, machine learning but at the end, I haven't gotten anything done. No big projects.... well, apart from a miniproject that extracts text from videos, doesn't work half the time (T-T), No internships...no experience, nothing. I was really, reaaally dumb xD
Now, in my 4th and final year of university , I have decided to settle on Web development (MERN) with game dev on the side (leisure activities), but I need advice.
Before deciding my path, I enrolled in the year-long ALX Software Engineering course. I'm in my 6th month. It promises access to The Room, where they say job opportunities that aren't shared publicly exist. Problem with the course, tho, is they rush, and I don't get time to consolidate what I learn in the course. I feel like i am not gaining anything (first few months were cool). I am on the verge of giving up cos I found solace in FullStackOpen. It teaches MERN, is self-paced, and ergo gives me time to build my portfolio and has a nice community. I know what to do (quit and focus on my portfolio and projects cos my CV is crap ), but advice from you all could really help. Thanks in advance seniors, this little brother appreciates it. -
People of DevRant who are involved in recruitment.
Eventually I want to look for a new job as a "proper" developer.
I've just started the 2nd level/year of my OU degree and I'll be working on that for another few years.
I won't start looking seriously until after covid etc and the economy has calmed down a bit.
What sort of projects do you recommend someone trying to get their foot in the door should have on their portfolio?
Should it be fully fledged applications like a big tracker/help desk or smaller projects which showcase knowledge of a particular subject e.g. programs that show knowledge of different algorithms etc?5 -

I want to make a web development and software development freelancing business. I had a great idea of a portfolio website for that business with a blog but the best way to make it it's using WordPress. I'm determined in making my own theme but I had a very dynamic and solid idea like adding some Easter egg videogames inside the webpage but with WordPress I can't do that. Another issue it's the time it would take to make this super website. Should I make the website as simple as possible and deploy it or wait until it's mostly done and deploy it?6 -

I used one for my portfolio which was at the time static and now I'm having absolute hell trying to port it over to Ionic -

share here, I'm also looking for some inspiration. 😉4 -
I just accepted a project for a high budget but i never did something on that big of a scale. I have the budget to consult with experts if i need them but in just feeling insecure about it.
at the same time i want to take it so i add it to my portfolio and i believe i can overcome any obstacle im just a bit scared
is that normal, any advice?1 -

I'm currently trying to design my portfolio site, anyone recommends and tool for this?
I currently use gravit (https://gravit.io) it's nice but there are some bugs and the tools its offers is quite limited..4 -
Installed a VM with ubuntu and syntaxnet. Did a little reading to scratch the surface on how to use it. Got my Stackoverflow rep from 1 to 60 by starting to help some people (I might be addicted now). Started learning python (again). Just to procrastinate working on the little portfolio of < 10 pages I had to hand in before 0:00 which I did.
I think I had a pretty productive weekend.
