This story is 100% true.
I got hired onto a team of construction workers to build a house. We set up a meeting with Management to find out what kind of house they wanted us to build, where’s the floor plan, what it’s going to be used for, who it’s for, etc. Management said that they didn’t know all that, we should just get started. They told us that we were going to use “Agile” which means that we just work on small deliverables and build the thing incrementally.
The developer team lead argued that we at least need to know how big the thing is going to be so that we can get started pouring the foundation, but Management told him they just don’t know. “What we do know,” Management said, “is that the house is going to have a bathroom. Just start there, and we’ll know more when it’s done. You have two weeks.”
So we just bought a port-a-potty, and screwed around on the internet for two weeks. Management was outraged. “You call this a house? This is the worst house ever! It doesn’t even have a tv!”
So we bought a tv and put it in the port-a-potty, attached to an outdoor generator. We were going to buy a a dvd player and get it hooked up to cable, but Management rejected the expense request, saying that they didn’t know if we needed it, and we’d come back to that later.
Management decided that we definitely need storage space, so we bought a boxcar and duct-taped the port-a-potty to it. Then to our horror they set up some desks and put a few miserable business interns in there. It went on like this…
After a few years the boxcar grew into a huge, ramshackle complex. It floods, leaks, it’s frozen in the winter and an oven in the summer. You have to get around in a strange maze of cardboard tubes, ladders and slides. There are two equally horrible separate buildings. We’re still using just the one outdoor generator for all power, so electricity is tightly rationed.
Communication between the buildings was a problem. For one of them, we use a complex series of flag signals. For the other we write notes on paper, crumple the paper up, and toss it over. Both of these methods were suggested as jokes, but Management really liked them for some reason. The buildings mostly talk to each other but they have to talk through us, so most of what we do is pass messages on.
It was suggested that we use paper airplanes instead of crumpled up balls, but the fat, awkward fingers of the Business Majors who inevitably take those jobs couldn’t be trained to make them. I built an awesome automatic paper airplane folder, but once again they couldn’t be trained to use it, so they just went back to crumpling the notes up in balls.
The worst part of all this is that it’s working. Everyone is miserable, but the business is making money. The bright side is that this nightmare complex is done so now we know what kind of building they actually needed in the first place, so we can start work on it. Obviously we can’t tell Management anything about what we’re doing until it’s finished. They noticed the gigantic hole in the ground where the foundation is coming in, but we told them that it’s a cache reset, and they mostly ignore it except when the occasional customer falls in.
I’ll probably be out of here before the new building gets finished. I could get a 50% raise by switching jobs, but Management still doesn’t think I should get a raise because I missed a couple sprints.7 -

She: Hey I am getting a new phone!
Me: which one?
She: Apple I phone
Me: oh cool!
She: yea I am really excited. I can't wait to have more space on my phone. I can't have anything on my current phone.
Me: yup.
She: new phone will have a lot of storage space. Its going to be 64MB. Imagine all the things I can do with it now.
Me: Hey, the 90's called, they want their storage sizes back.
*hilarious laughter ensues*

In a user-interface design meeting over a regulatory compliance implementation:
User: “We’ll need to input a city.”
Dev: “Should we validate that city against the state, zip code, and country?”
User: “You are going to make me enter all that data? Ugh…then make it a drop-down. I select the city and the state, zip code auto-fill. I don’t want to make a mistake typing any of that data in.”
Me: “I don’t think a drop-down of every city in the US is feasible.”
Manage: “Why? There cannot be that many. Drop-down is fine. What about the button? We have a few icons to choose from…”
Me: “Uh..yea…there are thousands of cities in the US. Way too much data to for anyone to realistically scroll through”
Dev: “They won’t have to scroll, I’ll filter the list when they start typing.”
Me: “That’s not really the issue and if they are typing the city anyway, just let them type it in.”
User: “What if I mistype Ch1cago? We could inadvertently be out of compliance. The system should never open the company up for federal lawsuits”
Me: “If we’re hiring individuals responsible for legal compliance who can’t spell Chicago, we should be sued by the federal government. We should validate the data the best we can, but it is ultimately your department’s responsibility for data accuracy.”
Manager: “Now now…it’s all our responsibility. What is wrong with a few thousand item drop-down?”
Me: “Um, memory, network bandwidth, database storage, who maintains this list of cities? A lot of time and resources could be saved by simply paying attention.”
Manager: “Memory? Well, memory is cheap. If the workstation needs more memory, we’ll add more”
Dev: “Creating a drop-down is easy and selecting thousands of rows from the database should be fast enough. If the selection is slow, I’ll put it in a thread.”
DBA: “Table won’t be that big and won’t take up much disk space. We’ll need to setup stored procedures, and data import jobs from somewhere to maintain the data. New cities, name changes, ect. ”
Manager: “And if the network starts becoming too slow, we’ll have the Networking dept. open up the valves.”
Me: “Am I the only one seeing all the moving parts we’re introducing just to keep someone from misspelling ‘Chicago’? I’ll admit I’m wrong or maybe I’m not looking at the problem correctly. The point of redesigning the compliance system is to make it simpler, not more complex.”
Manager: “I’m missing the point to why we’re still talking about this. Decision has been made. Drop-down of all cities in the US. Moving on to the button’s icon ..”
Me: “Where is the list of cities going to come from?”
<few seconds of silence>
Dev: “Post office I guess.”
Me: “You guess?…OK…Who is going to manage this list of cities? The manager responsible for regulations?”
User: “Thousands of cities? Oh no …no one is our area has time for that. The system should do it”
Me: “OK, the system. That falls on the DBA. Are you going to be responsible for keeping the data accurate? What is going to audit the cities to make sure the names are properly named and associated with the correct state?”
DBA: “Uh..I don’t know…um…I can set up a job to run every night”
Me: “A job to do what? Validate the data against what?”
Manager: “Do you have a point? No one said it would be easy and all of those details can be answered later.”
Me: “Almost done, and this should be easy. How many cities do we currently have to maintain compliance?”
User: “Maybe 4 or 5. Not many. Regulations are mostly on a state level.”
Me: “When was the last time we created a new city compliance?”
User: “Maybe, 8 years ago. It was before I started.”
Me: “So we’re creating all this complexity for data that, realistically, probably won’t ever change?”
User: “Oh crap, you’re right. What the hell was I thinking…Scratch the drop-down idea. I doubt we’re have a new city regulation anytime soon and how hard is it to type in a city?”
Manager: “OK, are we done wasting everyone’s time on this? No drop-down of cities...next …Let’s get back to the button’s icon …”

Clients can such cheapskates, client asks me for hosting options, I suggest Webfaction ($10/m), decent service, storage etc. Client goes and buys ($20/year) hosting, storage space 2GB. Client has 2.9GB worth of emails. Now am charging said client ($110) for migration.4

I have this little hobby project going on for a while now, and I thought it's worth sharing. Now at first blush this might seem like just another screenshot with neofetch.. but this thing has quite the story to tell. This laptop is no less than 17 years old.
So, a Compaq nx7010, a business laptop from 2004. It has had plenty of software and hardware mods alike. Let's start with the software.
It's running run-off-the-mill Debian 9, with a custom kernel. The reason why it's running that version of Debian is because of bugs in the network driver (ipw2200) in Debian 10, causing it to disconnect after a day or so. Less of an issue in Debian 9, and seemingly fixed by upgrading the kernel to a custom one. And the kernel is actually one of the things where you can save heaps of space when you do it yourself. The kernel package itself is 8.4MB for this one. The headers are 7.4MB. The stock kernels on the other hand (4.19 at downstream revisions 9, 10 and 13) took up a whole GB of space combined. That is how much I've been able to remove, even from headless systems. The stock kernels are incredibly bloated for what they are.
Other than that, most of the data storage is done through NFS over WiFi, which is actually faster than what is inside this laptop (a CF card which I will get to later).
Now let's talk hardware. And at age 17, you can imagine that it has seen quite a bit of maintenance there. The easiest mod is probably the flash mod. These old laptops use IDE for storage rather than SATA. Now the nice thing about IDE is that it actually lives on to this very day, in CF cards. The pinout is exactly the same. So you can use passive IDE-CF adapters and plug in a CF card. Easy!
The next thing I want to talk about is the battery. And um.. why that one is a bad idea to mod. Finding replacements for such old hardware.. good luck with that. So your other option is something called recelling, where you disassemble the battery and, well, replace the cells. The problem is that those battery packs are built like tanks and the disassembly will likely result in a broken battery housing (which you'll still need). Also the controllers inside those battery packs are either too smart or too stupid to play nicely with new cells. On that laptop at least, the new cells still had a perceived capacity of the old ones, while obviously the voltage on the cells themselves didn't change at all. The laptop thought the batteries were done for, despite still being chock full of juice. Then I tried to recalibrate them in the BIOS and fried the battery controller. Do not try to recell the battery, unless you have a spare already. The controllers and battery housings are complete and utter dogshit.
Next up is the display backlight. Originally this laptop used to use a CCFL backlight, which is a tiny tube that is driven at around 2000 volts. To its controller go either 7, 6, 4 or 3 wires, which are all related and I will get to. Signs of it dying are redshift, and eventually it going out until you close the lid and open it up again. The reason for it is that the voltage required to keep that CCFL "excited" rises over time, beyond what the controller can do.
So, 7-pin configuration is 2x VCC (12V), 2x enable (on or off), 1x adjust (analog brightness), and 2x ground. 6-pin gets rid of 1 enable line. Those are the configurations you'll find in CCFL. Then came LED lighting which required much less power to run. So the 4-pin configuration gets rid of a VCC and a ground line. And finally you have the 3-pin configuration which gets rid of the adjust line, and you can just short it to the enable line.
There are some other mods but I'm running out of characters. Why am I telling you all this? The reason is that this laptop doesn't feel any different to use than the ThinkPad x220 and IdeaPad Y700 I have on my desk (with 6c12t, 32G of RAM, ~1TB of SSDs and 2TB HDDs). A hefty setup compared to a very dated one, yet they feel the same. It can do web browsing, I can chat on Telegram with it, and I can do programming on it. So, if you're looking for a hobby project, maybe some kind of restrictions on your hardware to spark that creativity that makes code better, I can highly recommend it. I think I'm almost done with this project, and it was heaps of fun :D

This story starts over two years ago... I think I'm doomed to repeat myself till the end of time...
Feb 2014
[I'm thrust into the world of Microsoft Exchange and get to learn PowerShell]
Me: I've been looking at email growth and at this rate you're gonna run out of disk space by August 2014. You really must put in quotas and provide some form of single-instance archiving.
Management: When we upgrade to the next version we'll allocate more disk, just balance the databases so that they don't overload in the meantime.
[I write custom scripts to estimate mailbox size patterns and move mailboxes around to avoid uneven growth]
Nov 2014
Me: We really need to start migration to avoid storage issues. Will the new version have Quotas and have we sorted out our retention issues?
Management: We can't implement quotas, it's too political and the vendor we had is on the nose right now so we can't make a decision about archiving. You can start the migration now though, right?
Me: Of course.
May 2015
Me: At this rate, you're going to run out of space again by January 2016.
Management: That's alright, we should be on track to upgrade to the next version by November so that won't be an issue 'cos we'll just give it more disk then.
[As time passes, I improve the custom script I use to keep everything balanced]
Nov 2015
Me: We will run out of space around Christmas if nothing is done.
Management: How much space do you need?
Me: The question is not how much space... it's when do you want the existing storage to last?
Management: October 2016... we'll have the new build by July and start migration soon after.
Me: In that case, you need this many hundreds of TB
Storage: It's a stretch but yes, we can accommodate that.
[I don't trust their estimate so I tell them it will last till November with the added storage but it will actually last till February... I don't want to have this come up during Xmas again. Meanwhile my script is made even more self-sufficient and I'm proud of the balance I can achieve across databases.]
Oct 2016 (last week)
Me: I note there is no build and the migration is unlikely since it is already October. Please be advised that we will run out of space by February 2017.
Management: How much space do you need?
Me: Like last time, how long do you want it to last?
Management: We should have a build by July 2017... so, August 2017!
Me: OK, in that case we need hundreds more TB.
Storage: This is the last time. There's no more storage after August... you already take more than a PB.
Management: It's OK, the build will be here by July 2017 and we should have the political issues sorted.
Sigh... No doubt I'll be having this conversation again in July next year.
On the up-shot, I've decided to rewrite my script to make it even more efficient because I've learnt a lot since the script's inception over two years ago... it is soooo close to being fully automated and one of these days I will see the database growth graphs produce a single perfect line showing a balance in both size and growth. I live for that Nirvana.6 -
TLDR: First dinner with whole family, already 3 smartphones to "repair".
They buy cheap phones with just 8 GB of storage and then ask me to solve their issues with "insufficient space on the device" without removing pictures and videos because of course they are not aware of concepts like pc/cloud backup or using SD card as main saving location.
At least these phones are full of bloatware so I can easily disable something to gain enough storage to get rid of the notification (tricking them into believing that I solved all of their problems) while I set SD card as default and enlighten them about the wonders of Google Photo and its auto-clean function.
I'd really like to ignore them, but unfortunately that's the only kind of relationship I have with my relatives, I know that sucks but at least is something.
And I actually prefer to spend some minutes on someone else's phone than talk about politics or try to explain what exactly is my job and what I am studying 🙄6 -
Meet 'SBI Online' app from Play Store, in their own words:
What they were supposed to do?
"Experience the new Retail Internet Banking of SBI"
What they do?
"SBI online app will redirect to SBI Retail Internet Banking (online SBI) site"
Why do they have app?
"No need to remember URL",
"Less memory space required on device"
App storage space?
F**king 2.6 MB, just to redirect users to their website, in third-party browser.2 -
Some of the dinosaurs maintaining legacy systems are rather well meaning, but somewhat frustratingly don't seem to have updated their knowledge of what counts as "a lot of storage space" beyond the early 90's. Just asked one of them if they could dump all the legacy logs to AWS each day so we could keep them for 6 months or so (they're rolled over weekly otherwise.)
"Well I mean we can, but are you sure? *All* the logs? You could end up storing close to 100MB of logs a month! Won't that be prohibitively expensive?!"
It's rather cute really.11 -
20TB storage with a micro SD? does the phone have 19.48TB space or is there an SD card that size?

Do you still store your music files locally?
I like owning my music files on my storage.
Disadvantages:
Storage space
Time spent organising metadata
Advantages:
Savour the quality
Accessible
I don't have an internet access all the time unless I'm home. I feel left behind seeing everyone just streaming music.21 -
Oh fucking Huawei.

I do not like the direction laptop vendors are taking.
New laptops tend to feature fewer ports, making the user more dependent on adapters. Similarly to smartphones, this is a detrimental trend initiated by Apple and replicated by the rest of the pack.
As of 2022, many mid-range laptops feature just one USB-A port and one USB-C port, resembling Apple's toxic minimalism. In 2010, mid-class laptops commonly had three or four USB ports. I have even seen an MSi gaming laptop with six USB ports. Now, much of the edges is wasted "clean" space.
Sure, there are USB hubs, but those only work well with low-power devices. When attaching two external hard drives to transfer data between them, they might not be able to spin up due to insufficient power from the USB port or undervoltage caused by the impedance (resistance) of the USB cable between the laptop's USB port and hub. There are USB hubs which can be externally powered, but that means yet another wall adapter one has to carry.
Non-replaceable [shortest-lived component] mean difficult repairs and no more reserve batteries, as well as no extra-sized battery packs. When the battery expires, one might have to waste four hours on a repair shop for a replacement that would have taken a minute on a 2010 laptop.
The SD card slot is being replaced with inferior MicroSD or removed entirely. This is especially bad for photographers and videographers who would frequently plug memory cards into their laptop. SD cards are far more comfortable than MicroSD cards, and no, bulky external adapters that reserve the device's only USB port and protrude can not replace an integrated SD card slot.
Most mid-range laptops in the early 2010s also had a LAN port for immediate interference-free connection. That is now reserved for gaming-class / desknote laptops.
Obviously, components like RAM and storage are far more difficult to upgrade in more modern laptops, or not possible at all if soldered in.
Touch pads increasingly have the buttons underneath the touch surface rather than separate, meaning one has to be careful not to move the mouse while clicking. Otherwise, it could cause an unwanted drag-and-drop gesture. Some touch pads are smart enough to detect when a user intends to click, and lock the movement, but not all. A right-click drag-and-drop gesture might not be possible due to the finger on the button being registered as touch. Clicking with short tapping could be unreliable and sluggish. While one should have external peripherals anyway, one might not always have brought them with. The fallback input device is now even less comfortable.
Some laptop vendors include a sponge sheet that they want users to put between the keyboard and the screen before folding it, "to avoid damaging the screen", even though making it two millimetres thicker could do the same without relying on a sponge sheet. So they want me to carry that bulky thing everywhere around? How about no?
That's the irony. They wanted to make laptops lighter and slimmer, but that made them adapter- and sponge sheet-dependent, defeating the portability purpose.
Sure, the CPU performance has improved. Vendors proudly show off in their advertisements which generation of Intel Core they have this time. As if that is something users especially care about. Hoo-ray, generation 14 is now yet another 5% faster than the previous generation! But what is the benefit of that if I have to rely on annoying adapters to get the same work done that I could formerly do without those adapters?
Microsoft has also copied Apple in demanding internet connection before Windows 11 will set up. The setup screen says "You will need an Internet connection…" - no, technically I would not. What does technically stand in the way of Windows 11 setting up offline? After all, previous Windows versions like Windows 95 could do so 25 years earlier. But also far more recent versions. Thankfully, Linux distributions do not do that.
If "new" and "modern" mean more locked-in and less practical and difficult to repair, I would rather have "old" than "new".10 -
Was just recalling one of the worst calls I ever got in IT...
Many years ago we had a single rack for all of our servers, network and storage (pre virtualization too!).
We had a new security system installed in the building and the facilities manager let the guy into the server room to run all the sensor cables in because that is where they wanted their panel... the guy was too lazy to get up on the roof and in the attic repeatedly so after he checked it out he went around every where and drilled a hole straight up where he wanted the sensor wire to go... well the server room was not under an attic space... when he found he had drilled through to the out side... HE FILLED IT WITH EXPANDING FOAM.... the membrane on the roof was damaged... that night it rained... I got a call at 4 am that systems were acting funky and I went in... when I opened the door it was literally raining through the corners of the drop ceiling onto the rack... An excellent DR plan saved our asses but the situation cost the vendor's insurance company $30k in dead equipment and another $10k in emergency labor. Good thing for him we had so little equipment in that room back in.
Moral of the story... always have a good DR plan... you never know when it will rain in the server room.... :)3 -
Me: I’m gonna make it so the users can access the locations for 30days.
Boss: wtf? U dumb? Do you know how valuable that data is, dont fucking put a limit
Me: *listening 10minutes of him ranting how that’s the stupidest idea he’s heard all day*
Boss:why would you want to do that anyways like wtf?
Me: storage optimization
Boss: 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 wtf r u like a idiot or smthng.
My head: nah I’m done, I’m about to roast this guy with my numbers*
Me: every single minute 40k rows of data come in from just ONE☝️ CLIENT.....AND THATS HOW, EVEN IF WE ADD THAT FUCKING 2 YEAR LIMIT WE WOULD BE HOSTING 5 FUCKING PETABYTES OF DATA FOR JUST ONE CLIENT, not including other shits, this is only for heatmaps. And imagine changing all of that database system in the future, that would require going threw so much databases and pages, this ain’t just like changing one number and bam less storage space.
Boss: Ok, add that 2 year limit, later we will sort this out.
My brain: *omg, now that I know these numbers how will I ever fall asleep😦*7 -
Built a Media server using emby and then realized that one of my old TV shows with only 5 seasons was taking 129GB of storage space and I would need to transcode them, did my research and decided to use VP9 for the codec (YouTube, native browser support, etc.) found that it reduced my shows size to 51GB with great quality still. And then found out that emby doesn't allow direct play of VP9 on browsers and it's transcoding back to H264 Everytime I watch it. Submitted a issues, we'll see what happens now.3

MTP is utter garbage and belongs to the technological hall of shame.
MTP (media transfer protocol, or, more accurately, MOST TERRIBLE PROTOCOL) sometimes spontaneously stops responding, causing Windows Explorer to show its green placebo progress bar inside the file path bar which never reaches the end, and sometimes to whiningly show "(not responding)" with that white layer of mist fading in. Sometimes lists files' dates as 1970-01-01 (which is the Unix epoch), sometimes shows former names of folders prior to being renamed, even after refreshing. I refer to them as "ghost folders". As well known, large directories load extremely slowly in MTP. A directory listing with one thousand files could take well over a minute to load. On mass storage and FTP? Three seconds at most. Sometimes, new files are not even listed until rebooting the smartphone!
Arguably, MTP "has" no bugs. It IS a bug. There is so much more wrong with it that it does not even fit into one post. Therefore it has to be expanded into the comments.
When moving files within an MTP device, MTP does not directly move the selected files, but creates a copy and then deletes the source file, causing both needless wear on the mobile device' flash memory and the loss of files' original date and time attribute. Sometimes, the simple act of renaming a file causes Windows Explorer to stop responding until unplugging the MTP device. It actually once unfreezed after more than half an hour where I did something else in the meantime, but come on, who likes to wait that long? Thankfully, this has not happened to me on Linux file managers such as Nemo yet.
When moving files out using MTP, Windows Explorer does not move and delete each selected file individually, but only deletes the whole selection after finishing the transfer. This means that if the process crashes, no space has been freed on the MTP device (usually a smartphone), and one will have to carefully sort out a mess of duplicates. Linux file managers thankfully delete the source files individually.
Also, for each file transferred from an MTP device onto a mass storage device, Windows has the strange behaviour of briefly creating a file on the target device with the size of the entire selection. It does not actually write that amount of data for each file, since it couldn't do so in this short time, but the current file is listed with that size in Windows Explorer. You can test this by refreshing the target directory shortly after starting a file transfer of multiple selected files originating from an MTP device. For example, when copying or moving out 01.MP4 to 10.MP4, while 01.MP4 is being written, it is listed with the file size of all 01.MP4 to 10.MP4 combined, on the target device, and the file actually exists with that size on the file system for a brief moment. The same happens with each file of the selection. This means that the target device needs almost twice the free space as the selection of files on the source MTP device to be able to accept the incoming files, since the last file, 10.MP4 in this example, temporarily has the total size of 01.MP4 to 10.MP4. This strange behaviour has been on Windows since at least Windows 7, presumably since Microsoft implemented MTP, and has still not been changed. Perhaps the goal is to reserve space on the target device? However, it reserves far too much space.
When transfering from MTP to a UDF file system, sometimes it fails to transfer ZIP files, and only copies the first few bytes. 208 or 74 bytes in my testing.
When transfering several thousand files, Windows Explorer also sometimes decides to quit and restart in midst of the transfer. Also, I sometimes move files out by loading a part of the directory listing in Windows Explorer and then hitting "Esc" because it would take too long to load the entire directory listing. It actually once assigned the wrong file names, which I noticed since file naming conflicts would occur where the source and target files with the same names would have different sizes and time stamps. Both files were intact, but the target file had the name of a different file. You'd think they would figure something like this out after two decades, but no. On Linux, the MTP directory listing is only shown after it is loaded in entirety. However, if the directory has too many files, it fails with an "libmtp: couldn't get object handles" error without listing anything.
Sometimes, a folder appears empty until refreshing one more time. Sometimes, copying a folder out causes a blank folder to be copied to the target. This is why on MTP, only a selection of files and never folders should be moved out, due to the risk of the folder being deleted without everything having been transferred completely.

Microsoft.. MicrobrainedSoftware-devs.
SamsungCloud died out and was replaced with OneDrive automatically. Alright, my data is still backed up, so.. No biggie.
OneDrive was syncing my pics and videos automatically, even though media sync is disabled. Umm.. Okay?
My phone is constantly very low on free space [idk why], so I decided to clean up some old photos. I'm removing and removing, until I reach photos with a cloud and an arrow replacing their content. Hundreds of spoiled pics that do not open. And in info their path is /OneDrive/*. Umm.. Wat?
Open mydrive website, log in only to be greeted by a fully loaded onedrive webapp covered by a non-removable modal 'we have an app for this. Use app'. Wtf?? Just let me disable the modal and use the webapp!! Wtf!
Open onedrive app. I'm greeted with a red warning that I've exceeded my storage limits and my account is frozen and my files will be deleted in June '23. WTF????? A heads-up would be nice!!
The popup lists my options:
1. Unfreeze the account for 30days, but I can only do that once. If after 30d I'm still exceeding my limits, my acc will be again frozen w/o an easy way to unfreeze.
2. Once unfrozen [takes ~24hrs], I can either
2.1 pay 7€ to M$ monthly for 1TB of storage in onedrive
2.2 remove my files from OD and my phone [since even if media sync is disabled, OD app is still syncing my media]
what the actual fuck?!?!? M$ is now keeping hundreds of my photos on my phone hostage.
Go F* yourself!

Oohhh, dropbox... You are pathetic.
I'm a long time dbx user. 10+ years ago they had a programme saying that each new dbx user created using my ref link [on different machines] grants me 500M or 1G of additional space in my acct. Around that time I used to actively fix/reinstall/setup others' computers, so I had an easy access to different machines. This way I boosted my dbx capacity to 27G. For free.
Since ~5 years ago dbx started spamming me with "you're almost out of storage" emails [I'm using ~80% of my 27G]. Annoying, but I understand - they have to keep with the sales. I can live with this occasional spam.
Now, since I got my new laptop, I'm setting up dbx on it. And dbx is SO desperate with their sales, that now they only allow sync on 3 devices max. I had to unlink other 17 devices I've ever logged in from before I could continue.
What's the next step of despair? Free accounts can only sync on weekends?
Come on. This looks ridiculous. Dropbox, get your shit together!10 -
A project I've been a part of for two years finally exited beta this morning! It was so exciting watching it grow and and change into what it is today. The project in question is Storj.io. A decentralized cloud storage. When I first joined the project, literally all it did was create junk files to take up space. Now it is a thriving network storinf over a petabyte of data without the possibility of it ever going offline.8

I remembered an old game I played when I was a kid. There were no reliable downloads, so I spun up a brand new Win 11 VM to play it in, in case the .iso was some sort of disguised coin miner or something.
Anyways, it ended up working and being the real game (yay!) but the moral of the story is the VM + the entire game is about 12 GB, which is 10% the size of a lot of modern AAA titles.
I can have a whole other fucking computer running, dedicated to only this one game, for a tenth of the storage space of modern games.6 -
hey ranteros! i like to dream and i know many of us dream of a nice machine to do anything on it, if you want to post the specs of your ideal build(s) (even a laptop, pre-built pc, space gray macbook pro... doesn't matter). and your current one.
here's mine:
ideal: {
type: desktop-pc,
cpu: intel i7-8700K (coffee lake),
gpu: nvidia geforce gtx 1080ti,
ram: 32gb ddr4,
storage: {
ssd: samsung 960 evo 500gb,
hdd: 2tb wd black
},
motherboard: any good motherboard that supports coffee lake and has a good selection of i/o,
psu: anything juicy enough, silver rated,
cooling: i don't care about liquid cooling that much, or maybe i'm just afraid of it,
case: i accept any form factor, as long as it's not too oBNoxi0Us,
peripherals: {
monitor: 1080p, maybe 1440p, i can't 4k because of the media i consume (i have tons of shit i watch in 720p) + other reasons,
keyboardmousecombo: i like logitech stuff, nothing fancy, their non mechanical keyboards are nice, for mice the mx master 2 is nice i think, i also don't care about rgb because i think it's too distracting and i'm always in darkness so some white backlight is great
},
os: windows 10, tails (i have some questions about tails i'll be asking in a different post,
}
i think this is enough for ideal, now reality:
current: {

gpu: geforce g210m 2gb (with cuda™!),
ram: 4gb ddr3,
storage: hdd 500gb wd blue 5400rpm (this motherfucker stood the test of time because it's still working since i bought this thing (the laptop as it is) used in late 2009 although it's full of bad sectors and might anytime, don't worry i have everything backed up, i have a total of 5 hdds varying from 320gb to 1tb with different stuff on them),
screen: 17 inch hd-ready!!! (i think it's a tn panel), i've never done a test on color accuracy, but to my eyes it's bright, colorful, and has some dust particles between the lcd and backlight hah,
other cool things: dvd player/burner, full-sized keyboard with numeric keypad, vga, hdmi, 4 usb ports, ethernet, wi-fi haha, and it's hot, i mean so hot, hotter than elsa jean and piper perri combined,
os: windows 10, tails
}
if you read this whole thing i love you, and if you have some time to spare on a sunday you can share your dream rig and the sometimes cruel current one if you dare. you don't have to share them both. i know many will go b.o.b and say "what you're hoping to accomplish, i already did bitch.", that's cool as well, brag about your cool rig!6 -
Six months ago I was at the store wondering why on earth I passed up this cool LEGO set. I hadn't spent money on myself in a while, so I got it. I never got around to building it for several reasons, so I decided to put it in storage last night.
Imagine my shock when I go to put it away only to find the same exact set staring up at me, just dusty because I also had to put that one away because I couldn't find the time or space to build it.
I'm usually very good about tracking the sets that I buy. I double checked my list before I accidentally bought it the second time, and I must have forgotten to add it when I bought it the first time.
It is an expensive set, even for LEGO, but the return date for both has long since passed. Which means I get to build two blacksmith shops after I retire in 40 years.3 -
[Hardware geeks, microcontroller geeks, please come]
Yet another Hacktoberfest tshirt...
Gotcha? (I bet you know who I am)
Just kidding. Just a random project idea I am not sure if it is possible to make from scratch.
It is essentially a usb external storage
About 32gb
And has a lcd that shows available storage space
And some buttons to play snake. (Yup)
Is it possible?
What should I expect when creating from scratch? (Microcontroller, c language, interfaces, etc)

My boyfriend had been deleting all messages every time for the last couple of days from his phone and he did not know that i was peeping him, but when I asked him why he was deleting all messages from his phone but he always replied that his phone memory was full and needed more space. I searched for a hacker who can recover deleted data and information on my boyfriend's phone and luckily for me i came across this reliable ethical hacker group, this hacker did the work for me and provided results and i discovered my boyfriend has been deceiving me. He was simply deleting all pictures, call logs, chats and text messages between him and his secret girlfriend so i wont be able to see what he has been up to behind my back. Thank God for this reliable group of hackers who are ready to help. I must say am really impressed with the services I got from Maestro Encrypter Financier and am here to say a very big thank you: contact maestroencrypter (@) financier. com . And I also can testify that hackers can often recover deleted data by accessing the remnants left in storage devices using specialized software.9

What was supposed to be an inoffensive shutdown during the weekend for maintenance became a nightmare today. The storage went to the space thanks to a system admin who was supposed to know what is doing. Since there is no power button I just pulled the power cord, he said.3

Around 7 months ago,me and my friend started working for a startup as interns. it was work from home internship. they first told us to research about CDN and study about RESTapi. when we finished with that they told us to make a personal storage portal ( ) using CDNs which we did. After 3 month of work when we presented the same they then told us to scrap the project. what they wanted was cloud storage space which i am now implementing using amazon s3 FUCK THIS FUCKING STARTUP1

TLDR filling disk space
Filling almost all c drive and buying more and more external storage.
When downloading new software, open file explorer -> my computer -> press f5 every 10 seconds to see your drive taking place. -
It's 2022 and Firefox still doesn't allow deactivating video caching to disk.
When playing videos from some sites like the Internet Archive, it writes several hundreds of megabytes to the disk, which causes wear on flash storage in the long term. This is the same reason cited for the use of jsonlz4 instead of plain JSON. The caching of videos to disk even happens when deactivating the normal browsing cache (about:config property "browser.cache.disk.enable").
I get the benefit of media caching, but I'd prefer Firefox not to write gigabytes to my SSD each time I watch a somewhat long video. There is actually the about:config property "browser.privatebrowsing.forceMediaMemoryCache", but as the name implies, it is only for private browsing. The RAM is much more suitable for this purpose, and modern computers have, unlike computers from a decade ago, RAM in abundance, which is intended precisely for such a purpose.
The caching of video (and audio) to disk is completely unnecessary as of 2022. It was useful over a decade ago, back when an average computer had 4 GB of RAM and a spinning hard disk (HDD). Now, computers commonly have 16 GB RAM and a solid-state drive (SSD), which makes media caching on disk obsolete, and even detrimental due to weardown. HDDs do not wear down much from writing, since it just alters magnetic fields. HDDs just wear down from the spinning and random access, whereas SSDs do wear down from writing. Since media caching mostly invovles sequential access, HDDs don't mind being used for that. But it is detrimental to the life span of flash memory, and especially hurts live USB drives (USB drives with an operating system) due to their smaller size.
If I watch a one-hour HD video, I do not wish 5 GB to be written to my SSD for nothing. The nonstandard LZ4 format "mozLZ4" for storing sessions was also introduced with the argument of reducing disk writes to flash memory, but video caching causes multiple times as much writing as that.
The property "media.cache_size" in about:config does not help much. Setting it to zero or a low value causes stuttering playback. Setting it to any higher value does not reduce writes to disk, since it apparently just rotates caching within that space, and a lower value means that it just rotates writing more often in a smaller space. Setting a lower value should not cause more wear due to wear levelling, but also does not reduce wear compared to a higher value, since still roughly the same amount of data is written to disk.
Media caching also applies to audio, but that is far less in size than video. Still, deactivating it without having to use private browsing should not be denied to the user.
The fact that this can not be deactivated is a shame for Firefox.1 -
A friend of mine asked me yesterday for help for his bachelor thesis.
He wants to write about MySQL internals in regards to BLOB storage / usage.
We had a veeeerrrry long discussion....
And found a loooot of scary internet pages.
It's so .... Insane....
What some people with doctor titles or higher education generate...
Isn't content. More poo...
Most "blogs" / "articles" or whatever the author named it were missing all kinds of relevant data (version, configuration, anything relevant) but full of opinionated / biased bullshit.
Highlights were:
- we store lot of BLOB data, Backups take long and require more space
(you store additional data in an database, whaddya expect???!!!!)
- interesting guesswork about locking without any reference (interesting since it was sometimes so far away from reality that it looked more like quantum physics)
- storing blobs means that _each_ blob entry will be stored in a separate file (without any reference, but if an RDBMs did that... It would end in an amazing fireball I guess)
- BLOB's bad since it can represent only the file content, the database cannot distinguish wether it's an MP3 / MPG or anything like that...
(Ehm. Yeah. And an database cannot distinguish if you store under "Name" an Name or gibberish?!)
I somehow think that some people made an doctor and post this gibberish nonsense so people stay dumb to give them a job...
Like the TV repair men who steals the batteries from the remote.
Even conspiracy theories were more convincing -
...just download our new app! NO! FUCK YOU! What do you think you deserve storage space and permissions on my phone? Make a responsive site or webapp or I will not use your service. Why does everything need a fucking app? Oh, you bought a new car? Download an app! New appliance? DOWNLOAD A FUCKING APP! Just bought a new Samsung phone, but already use all of Googles empireware? WELL HERE IS ANOTHER CALENDAR/MAIL/EVERYTHING APP FROM SAMSUNG THAT YOU CAN'T COMPLETELY DELETE! This needs to stop.
/rant
Thank you for listening2 -
Dear BOSE, how can you make a "smart" speaker so dumb and complicated? Why require to use an app that needs frequent updates and takes up so much storage space for ... what exactly?
Dear Spotify, why not add features to the web player if your app does not run on older devices? Which native feature would your app need that is missing on iOS 13?
Dear companies making money due to the fact that some real artists make real music that real people love to listen to, how come your apps and gadgets always make me nostalgic about actual records and make me tune in to an actual radio station at the end of the day? At least you keep showing us not to rely on digital technology and rather go visit actual live concerts to listen to live music in the real world more often!2 -
Fk you Google!
My Samsung note 10 screen went dead near a week ago... it's a secondary line so waiting for parts wasn't the end of the world.
Ofc the screen (curved and incl a fingerprint reader thatd be a major pain to not replace) was integrated to the whole front half... back panel glued, battery, glued immensely and with all other parts out, about 6mm space only at the bottom to get a tool in to pry it out.
New screen (off brand) ~200... all genuine parts amazon refurb ~230... figured id have some extra hardware for idk what... i like hardware and can write drivers so why not.
Figured id save a bit of time and avoid other potentially damaged (water) components to just swap out the mobo unit that had my storage.
Put it back together, first checked that my sim was recognised since this carrier required extraneous info when registering the dev... worked fine... fingerprint worked fine, brave browser too...
Then i open chrome. It tells me im offline... weird cuz i was literally in a discord call. My wifi says connected to the internet (not that i wouldn't have known the second there was a network issue... i have all our servers here and a /28 block... ofc i have everything scripted and connected to alert any dev i have, anywhere i am, the moment something strange happens).
Apparently google doesnt like the new daughter board(i dislike the naming scheme... its weird to me)... so anything that is controlled by google aside from the google account that is linked to non-google reliant apps like this... just hangs as if loading and/or says im offline.
I know... itll only take me about the 5-10m it took to type this rant but ffs google... why dont you even have an error message as to what your issue is... or the simple ability to let me log in and be like 'yup it's me, here's your dumb 2fa and a 3rd via text cuz you're extra paranoid yet dont actually lock the account or dev in any way!'
I think it's a toss up if google actually knows that it's doing this or they just have some giant glitch that showed up a couple times in testing and was resolved via the methods of my great grama- "just smack it or kick it a few times while swearing at it in polish. Like reaaaally yelling. Always worked for me! If not, find a fall guy."7 -
Just a thought
If WanaCry hackers instead of spreading ransomware they spreaded Silicon Valley Space Saver like app and the virus inside the app continued spreading itself to around 1 Million pcs, where the app would use around 5GB of storage on each pc giving the hackerd around 5 PB of storage.
Would that be possible like Silicon Valley to create a decenteralized data storage system on pcs all around the world and the app would keep spreading itself and by time expand the storage11 -
There was this one time when a coworker needed to update the Xcode.
IIRC because his Mac mini was low on storage space, the update failed && the Xcode became corrupted.
He found that out when he tried to open the Xcode, at which time he was presented w/ an error akin to:
'Xcode was found to be corrupted && was moved to the Recycle Bin'.
C: 'Good, it belongs there!'.10 -

I'm in big dilemma for a few days. About what to do to my HP stream. It was bought from overseas so it has licensed windows 10. It only has got 32GB for storage. And I only have like 1GB 2GB free space. I am using it for presentation, urgent quick code debug, watching movies and browsing internet.
So the dilemma is should I abandon the license windows 10 and install a lightweight Linux distro or not? 🤔36 -
Found out today that someone has a cron job running doing a daily DB export since June 1 of 2015. The dumps average 2GB. I am amazed that storage engineering hasn't complained. Here's the kicker. It's a Dev database. WTF!? Dev? I freed up a terabyte of space today. Now I need to find out who owns that cron job.2
-
What the hell is WRONG with Windows 10. Why does it need so much storage space? I get to only use 219+38.6+13.8 GiB and Windows gets to use 564 GiB of data to piggyback on data and storage space to push nonsense updates to user who do not want them. Use your own fucking servers, MS. I wish this fucking OS burns in hell.
10 -
So a few minutes after doing a factory reset on my phone, i get 2 notifications... first one saying "35+ apps have been updated" (factory installed apps) and "Your device is out of storage space". WTF 😑1
-
Thank you Google, for updating Chrome on my phone without notice in spite of me explicitly disabling automatic updates and me 'not having enough storage space left' for manual updates. It's nice to see you caring about the user so much.
Now if you sucked my dick while you were at it, that would be great.3 -
I’m expanding my storage with 8x 20TB hard drives. With raid5 on it I would get approximately 126TB of storage space.
This would allow me to download full common crawl dataset and play with it locally.11 -
//long rant ahead!
I need to plan a Wiki with SharePoint for not connected Sites.
Im now in dispute with my CoWorker since 3 Months, this is how the conversation goes. My two bosses are involved in this and also unhappy about SharePoint.
[C refers to CoWorker, M for me]
C: Hey, we finished SharePoint with Selfservice Storage Rooms. They even have a Wiki.
M: Okay cool, will check it out
C: Well we need to also plan the Wiki inside, I already asked our Department Head and he agreed, that you will be the one.
M: Okkkkaaayy, normaly it's your job to do such things, but welp, I will look into it, if we can work with it.
(2 Weeks pass)
M: I checked SharePoint out and tested everything. The Wiki is a Nogo, we need a other solution or programm for ourself a Wiki Integration/Engine. Did you maybe check out Confluence? It has also a SharePoint integration plugin.
C: We wont do Confluence, too expensive (already overspent the budget for SharePoint in six digits 🤬). Also we wont add to SharePoint Custom Code, it needs to stay standard.
M: Thats impossible, SharePoint Wiki is shit and also handels sites just like documents, no brain behind! Also you overspent the Budget and now it's my Problem?!
C: You need to do the best out of it.
(3 weeks passes and we get a meeting with the department heads)
M: Alright I made a UseCase and documented where the essential flaws are in SharePoint Wiki and why we cant use it.
Boss: Ok if it's impossible to use, then we will stay on our Fileserver for Documents and wont use SharePoint.
M: Thats not my Point, my statement is, as status today, SharePoint Wiki is not the right solution, code or buy software to it.
Boss: We will do a Prove of Concept, if it doesnt work then we will aboard it.
M: Well it is only some missing essentials, like hierarchy and Groups for the Pages, Example Confluence has this. If we could built in this features in SharePoint, everything would work out.
C: (angry) I told you that we wont use Confluence!
M: (calm) I said we need Features, not Confluence. Please mind the consent.
(3 weeks passes, and one more meating with bosses)
M: alright here again is a analyses, why already in Theory the current SharePoint Wiki wont work. It's already flawed in the core.
Boss: Yea SharePoint is crap, I checked out confluence and thats a real Wiki.
C: Well I dont know anything about Confluence and never looked at it. But if SharePoint is a fail we need the Proof of Concept.
M: Why do we need to do a Proof of Concept, when it already doesnt work in Theory! Thats nonsence and unlogical.
Next meeting will be in 4 weeks and I will give him the FUCKING PROOF OF CONCEPT. I will be a Bastard and build behind CoWorkers back a Confluence Wiki to show the Departmentheads how to built it right.
I hate CoWorker now, he makes a part of my loved Job a hell, I will goddamn cuk Coworker to space, that fucking Cukatron of lazyness and shit 🤬. I provide the Solutions and you just say no, how dafuq will the project advance, if you always say NO! Are you so unflexible and fixed on your Castle of Ignorancy!5 -
I like rants that are thought provoking and push a message forward regardless of whether they may sting a little, so for my first post on here I'd like to hit at home with many of you.
Html5 "Native" Applications are not needed. Let's cover mobile first of all, the misconception that apps are written in either javascript or Native android/ Native ios environment. Or even some third party paid tools like xamarin is quite strange to me. OpenGL ES is on both IOS and Android there is no difference. It's quite easy to write once run everywhere but with native performance and not having to jump through js when it's not needed. Personally I never want to see html or css if I'm working on a mobile app or desktop. Which brings me to desktop, I can't begin to describe how unthought out an electron app is. Memory usage, storage space for embedding chromium, web views gained at the expense of literally everything else, cross platform desktop development has been around for decades, openGL is everywhere enough said. Finally what about targeting browser if your writing a native app for mobile and desktop let's say in c++ and it's not in javascript how can it turn back into javascript, well luckily c++ has emscripten which does that simply put, or you could be using a cross complier language like haxe which is what I use. It benefits with type safety, while exporting both c++ and javascript code. Conclusion in reality I see the appeal to the js ecosystem it's large filled with big companies trying to make js cross development stronger every day. However development in my mind should be a series of choices, choices that are invisible don't help anyone, regardless of the popularity of the choice, or the skill required.8 -
I wonder...
On a global scale, how much of Google's storage space is being consumed by unread JIRA emails.3 -
Me at 9:00 AM: wide awake 🔥
Me at 10:00 AM: after spending 1 hour on trying to find out why storage space is low on some of our production servers: ready to fall asleep any second 😴 -
It feels that I have my own personal space in the head offices of Google 2TB, Facebook 6TB.....I wish they could have provided that much cloud storage of data for free

Fuck windows!
Really original I know. Previously used windows and rebooted Arch to be productive. I have a HDD that I use as a common storage for both OSes.
Those of you who have dual boot might have already guessed what that shitty house decoration did.
https://askubuntu.com/a/921634
It fucking locked the partition on my HDD and did not release it after a normal shut down because you know, "ma boot goos faster ween I du thet". Your boot time is still shit, even though you're installed on a SSD.
Default windows configuration is set to piss off with every who has a dual boot system. I pray for the success of Steam's proton project so that I can ditch that wasted space and give it to an OS that actually deserved it.3 -
Hey everyone :-) - Hope you're all doing well & Staying safe, i just have a question for you all, i have a project i am working on which is a command line tool to track my storage on my PC & laptop, right now it outputs my remaining space, used space and storage capacity :-), it also shows these numbers on bar chart & pie chart - i'm proud of it! :D , its written in Python also - would love to know what other things would you guys add to it? any ideas? id really appreciate it :-) cheers! <336

does anyone know what other storage is? I got on my mac today and was going to reinstall xcode after deleting it because of how shitty the software is but I couldn't download it because I didn't have enough space. I go to look at my storage and I have 155 GB of storage named "other" AND IT WONT EVEN LET ME CHECK WHAT OTHER IS

The end of today was extremely fun.
Imagine the surprise. I was importing a simple 8 GB big virtual machine into the Proxmox hypervizor.
First issue: It was in the Open Virtualization Format (.ova) for easy import into... most hypervizors... Not Proxmox, however.
But really, not that bad, there are ways around it. Create a blank virtual machine through the UI, scrap the disk you create, then extract the two disk QCOW2 files from the .ova file, which by itself is just a POSIX TAR archive. Then import them through the commandline.
...So I did just that. The larger of the two was about 8 GBs, the other just like... 50 MBs.
The larger imported fine. The smaller?
Color me surprised, when it created a FUCKING. 1. TB. LOGICAL. VOLUME.
...
That it then proceeded to try and fill full of zeros...
Oh yes, it was one of the fancy dynamic storage files that expand as space is needed.
...
Tomorrow, I'll have to try if I can export just the filesystem data into an individual, shrunken down, normal, plain, old disk. None of this fancy black magic shit.
...Also... I don't get why Proxmox doesn't support that... The filesystem was only a few megs big... Ugh.1 -
Apple should have a developer version of their stupid computers. It would have Xcode already installed, and 50 Gb of extra storage space lord know how big they are gonna make that app.

Today at work, I had to do a dry run of our new production environment config for our VM server.
So I setup ESXi in a vm in my workstation. Installed it it, no problem. Setup some VMs, still going good. Then my supervisor came and said I have to make some tweaks and use vCenter. I thought: meh, that came late but ok. Download the vCenter installer from our internal CDN and ran it. Sorry general config, blah blah blah. "Setup with embedded or external platform service controller?" -"Embedded" - "minimal requirements: 11GB ram, 250GB disk storage, 2 CPU cores". Well... Fuck me. My workstation specs: 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, 4 cores.
What the bloody fucking hell does this stuff need 250 GB disk space for?!
Well at least I've got a permanent upgrade for my workstation.1 -
I now have 6 storage drives, ranging from 512GB SSds, to 2GB NVMEs. Out of almost exactly 6TB of storage space, I'm using about 60% of it.
Having so much data seems a bit obscene.7 -
because I lacked a portable storing solution (pockets weren't allowed), I couldn't find anything better than using my own skull as a storage box. It turned out it had way more room than expected. The brain itself is quite small, and the whole frontal lobe & the space around the brain is completely empty. Initially, opening the skull was scary and cumbersome, but the more you do it, the easier it gets. Once upon a time, when I tried to pop an acne on my forehead, the hole was revealed, and it led to the storage space beneath. I have no idea how it happened, but apparently the skin is too thin. The bone also looks much thicker from the inside. There were two wires — red and black — leading to a standard PC speaker every old computer had. I wasn't a cyborg, mind you, I merely put that speaker there for storage. The acne hole healed with those wires exposed, leaving a permanent mark due to the wire coloring pigment dissolving in my skin.
I used that storage space to hide the contents of some parcels I was processing back then. I was stealing things. Eventually, my coworker — Bruce Willis — confronted me, and I had to strangle him. My arm became very flexible, and I was able to wrap it around his neck several times during a chokehold. It didn't end well for both of us. -
How do other developers handle local websites that are large in size? Currently the code and site need to be setup for each client for several developers. We use github and bitbucket repos for the code.
The biggest issue is downloading the site files and setting it up locally for each developer. We used Docker for some projects but ran into permission issues and storage space became an issue.14 -

Any idea to get around the cluster storage limitation?
I have to train a model on a large dataset, but the limit I have is about 39GB. There is space on my local disk but I don't know if I can store the data on my computer and have the model train on the cluster resources.1 -

I've finally been so agitated at G+ I need somewhere to just vent.
So for context. What I'm talking about is Google+, or more specifically, the Android app. The website is bad in its own way, but that's not here nor there. No opinions on the iOS version, as I simply REFUSE to touch iOS.
So anyways. The platform itself honestly is not bad. With competent developers behind it, and them actually listening to their dwindling fucking userbase, they could easily turn it into something successful, but the issue is that they just aren't
You see, it's almost like they change dev staff every 6 or so months. Why do I believe this? Because the GUI changes about that fucking often. They also have a history of forcing updates, but allowing you to use an older version, just horrifically slapping on a new and unwelcome skin. This isn't an isolated practice by any means, but it's by far the most prevalent here.
So, now a list of some of the issues the current version has:
-After about a week, the app becomes unstably slow, to the point of it taking about a minute to refresh your home feed, or an individual page.
-Searching is never good, always being slow and rarely giving you who you asked for.
-Transparency is non fucking existent. There isn't a development roadmap to speak of, and when something happens we get it second hand from staff in a "G+ help" community.
There is a solution for the first one, going and clearing the data/cache, but really, the end user shouldn't have to regularly do that. Not to mention the storage space Google apps IN GENERAL fucking take up. Why does Google Play Services regularly use 250MB? (For most people, this really isn't much. But when you only get to fucking use 4 GB of internal storage it's a giant fuck you.)
Bah, back to the topic at hand.
There isn't a good solution to searching, or for transparency at the moment.
The spam filter is awful as well. REGULARLY letting obvious spam pass, regularly blocking and filtering genuine users. It's real annoying that the Android app itself doesn't have support for seeing these flags outside of rooting through the settings a bit, but still. The web and iOS versions have this already.
Oh, it also completely lacks a dark mode like most Google apps for some fuckin reason.
That concludes my random 1:30 AM rant about something I have no ability to change, except hope in vain that someone who has the ability to change this forwards this to the developers of G+.
I need a better sleep schedule.3 -
External Storage recommendation questions.
Im in need of some sort of external storage, either a harddrive or a NAS server, but idk what to get.
Price should be reasonable for the security and storage space it gives, so heres what i figured so far for pros and cons:
NAS Server:
+ Bigger capacity
+ Raid option
+ Easily expandable
+ Always accessible via the network (local)
- Difficult to transport (not gonna do that, but still)
- Expensive
- Physically larger
- Consumes power 24/7 (i dont pay for power currently)
Harddrive:
+ Easy to pack away and transport
+ Cheaper
- If drive fails, youre fucked
- If you want larger capacity, you end up with two external backups
What do you guys do? Im not sure what i should do :i
Any advice is appreciated.
It will be used for external backup, as mentioned. For my server and my own pc.12 -
Oh, now I understand why my past self had some pain in the neck in front of his computer. Twas his future self (the latest version of me writing this post) strangling him for the terabyte of duplicates of so many shit spread around my external storages.
Over 1 Terabyte of duplicate data among the 2.5 Tb in use, in the 3.5 Tb of maximum storage I have.1 -
This question might make you lose a brain cell because of stupidity in the question. Read with caution
Is there a way to compile a game for Windows from Linux in Unreal engine? I did google some posts but the answer was either use a Virtual machine which will not be done or use the the theoretical method of using mingw but the forum posts state that it will be tricky business or use a windows machine. I have dual booted windows with linux on my machine.
However since the machine has a 512 gb ssd most of the storage space is devoted to unreal engine which takes 47 gigs in itself and have a lot of programs installed I have a usable 20 gigs left out of 145 gig partition. Windows has around 318 gigs of storage to it but I have 100 gigs free at most. So after installing the windows sdk, visual studio with extensions, unreal engine and some other stuff I don't have much space left for myself. I need that much space since I install a lot of games to my ssd. So now I cant load my bigger projects for playing on my windows. I could use my hdd which is mostly used for backups and 100+ gig stuff. Though the hdd's are of course far slower than ssd's which shouldn't be a problem however last time I used visual studio it ate more than 2 gigs of ram for a solution meaning that the compiler has very low memory for itself to actually compile so for any large files the hdd has more of a bottleneck.
Oh and I can't upgrade my ssd's or ram because I don't have enough money.
Thanks for the answers in advance4 -
ENOSPC = random things go wrong.
There are many synonyms for ENOSPC, like "disk full", "space storage full", "space storage exhausted", "no more space left on device", and those other repulsive errors. For the sake of simplicity, I am going to refer to it as ENOSPC.
If you are in this condition on the operating system partition, get out of it quickly or random things will go wrong. Text editors which write directly to a text file rather than creating a temporary file and then replacing the text file could end up blanking the text file, softwares' configuration files might fail saving which causes a reset, and web browsers might spontaneously reset cookies and lose history.
For example, Firefox has created a gap in the web browsing history, as shown here. The history that is now memory-holed initially appeared to have been recorded successfully. Apparently, a failed write to the places.sqlite database when closing the browser created this gap.

VISIT FUNDS RECLAIMER COMPANY FOR CRYPTO RECOVERY
Losing cryptocurrency to theft or fraud can be a devastating experience, but recent advancements in blockchain technology and the growing expertise of recovery professionals have made it possible to reclaim stolen funds. Cryptocurrency transactions are recorded on the blockchain, which is public and transparent, allowing for tracing stolen assets. However, while the blockchain records every transaction, it only stores public keys and addresses, which makes it difficult to identify the thief without the aid of experts. The first line of defense is prevention. Using secure wallets, such as hardware wallets or reputable software wallets with strong encryption and two-factor authentication, is crucial for safeguarding your assets. Hardware wallets, which store your private keys offline, offer the highest level of protection by keeping your funds safe from online hacks. Cold storage wallets, which are completely disconnected from the internet, provide an added layer of security. If you fall victim to theft, however, it’s essential to act swiftly to recover your cryptocurrency. The faster you take action, the better your chances of reclaiming your assets. Start by reporting the theft to law enforcement. While law enforcement might not be able to intervene directly due to the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies, they can help in gathering evidence for further investigation. The next step is to enlist the help of a cryptocurrency recovery expert. These professionals specialize in tracking stolen funds and working with blockchain forensic tools to identify the thief’s address and trace the movement of your stolen funds. Cryptocurrency recovery services, like FUNDS RECLIAMER COMPANY, are among the best in the field. They have the knowledge and tools to track stolen cryptocurrency, work with virtual asset service providers, and help freeze or recover your funds. In many cases, these experts can collaborate with exchanges and wallets that may have received the stolen cryptocurrency and help you retrieve your assets. Once you have recovered your stolen funds, it’s essential to take steps to prevent future thefts. Always stay informed about common scams and phishing attacks in the crypto space. Double-check wallet addresses before sending funds and consider using multi-signature wallets for additional security. In conclusion, while cryptocurrency theft is still a risk, securing your assets, acting quickly when theft occurs, and working with expert recovery services can greatly increase your chances of getting your funds back and minimizing future risks.

Custom Lip Gloss Boxes: The Ultimate Guide to Stylish and Functional Packaging
In the beauty industry, packaging is just as important as the product itself. It serves not only to protect and preserve the product but also plays a pivotal role in branding, marketing, and influencing consumer choices. When it comes to lip gloss, custom packaging offers endless possibilities to create a unique brand presence. Custom lip gloss boxes are a key element in delivering that first impression, helping brands stand out in a competitive market.
This article delves into the importance of custom lip gloss boxes, their benefits, design considerations, and the latest trends shaping this packaging solution.
Why Custom Lip Gloss Boxes Matter
Lip gloss is a beauty staple, often viewed as a small, portable item, but its impact on a brand’s image can be significant. Custom lip gloss boxes elevate the product’s appeal, making it more attractive to consumers while offering protection during transport and storage. These boxes not only serve a practical purpose but also communicate a brand's values, creativity, and quality.
Key Benefits of Custom Lip Gloss Boxes
Brand Differentiation Custom packaging allows brands to create a distinct identity in the crowded beauty industry. With a range of customization options including colors, shapes, finishes, and design elements, brands can craft packaging that reflects their personality and vision, ensuring that their lip gloss stands out on store shelves.
Effective Marketing Tool A well-designed lip gloss box doubles as a marketing tool. With space for logos, taglines, product descriptions, and even social media handles, custom packaging reinforces brand recognition and helps consumers remember your product long after purchase.
Enhanced Product Protection While lip gloss tubes are often sturdy, custom boxes provide an added layer of protection, especially during shipping and handling. These boxes ensure the product arrives in perfect condition, preventing damage from impact, exposure to sunlight, or moisture.
Improved Consumer Experience Attractive and thoughtfully designed packaging enhances the unboxing experience, making it memorable for customers. This can lead to positive word-of-mouth, repeat purchases, and social media shares, all of which contribute to brand loyalty.
Eco-Friendly Options Many beauty brands are now shifting toward sustainable packaging solutions. Custom lip gloss boxes can be made from eco-friendly materials such as recycled cardboard or biodegradable paper. This not only reduces the environmental impact but also appeals to environmentally-conscious consumers.
Cost-Effective and Scalable Custom lip gloss boxes can be produced at scale, making them cost-effective for brands. Bulk production reduces the per-unit cost, making it an affordable option for businesses of all sizes, from boutique brands to large cosmetic companies.
Design Considerations for Custom Lip Gloss Boxes
Creating custom packaging involves several design elements that must be carefully thought out to achieve the desired look and functionality. Here are key aspects to consider:
Material Choice The material used for the custom lip gloss boxes should be durable yet lightweight. Popular materials include cardboard, kraft paper, and rigid boxes. Brands focused on sustainability may opt for eco-friendly or recycled materials, which can still deliver a high-end feel.
Size and Shape The size of the box should fit the lip gloss container snugly to avoid unnecessary movement and potential damage. While traditional rectangular boxes are common, unique shapes such as hexagonal or cylindrical boxes can make your packaging stand out.
Branding Elements Incorporating your brand’s logo, color palette, and fonts is essential in creating packaging that resonates with your target audience. Consistent use of branding elements across all your products helps build brand identity and consumer trust.
Printing and Finishing Options Various printing techniques and finishes can enhance the look and feel of your custom lip gloss boxes
Window Cutouts Adding a transparent window to your lip gloss boxes allows consumers to see the actual product without opening the packaging. This feature is particularly appealing when showcasing different lip gloss shades, helping consumers make purchasing decisions quickly.
Sustainability As consumers become more eco-conscious, brands can differentiate themselves by using recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable packaging materials. Eco-friendly packaging not only reduces your brand's carbon footprint but also enhances its image as a socially responsible entity.
Conclusion
Custom lip gloss boxes are a crucial element in building a strong brand presence and ensuring that your product catches consumers' attention.

You know @otokolo reminded me of a gripe of mine regarding a doomsday fallback
Why has no one taken advantage of the considerable reduction in physical space required for storage and put a copy of Linux on ROM on a motherboard loaded with compilers and an ide ? Also why are these people so weird and cyclic? Was not originally that way and I don't remember enough up front to avoid it.8 -

RECOVER STOLEN CRYPT0 FUNDS THROUGH THE HELP OF \\FOLKWIN EXPERT RECOVERY.
At any rate, I had always counted myself as a very savvy Bitcoin Holder-a real crypto enthusiast of both the virtual streets of the Reddit community and Wall Street-having kept a cool $10 million in Bitcoin safely tucked away in cold storage. That all changed, though, after a freak occurrence-a weird tech glitch and my own bit of carelessness cost me access to my wallet. The FUD hit me heavy, with worse-case scenarios whirring within my mind in overdrive. I contacted a few recovery agents, only to be faced each time with hyped promises and an array of technical babble, none of which provided reassurance. Each agent assured me they could do magic and get my states restored. Instead, all I got were vague assurances about nothing concrete from any of them. I began to question everything from the security to my due diligence, to my diamond hands. I was stuck in this vicious circle of FOMO and regret, thinking how one could recover what's basically digital gold locked away in a blockchain.
Having reached a breaking point, well-nigh flinging in the towel, I retreated to my favorite haunt-Reddit. I scrolled through some posts on r/Bitcoin and other crypto forums until I chanced upon this game-changing thread. A user, clearly wrung through the emotional wringer, gave his testimony of a service called (FOLKWIN (Expert) RECOVERY). They detailed how this team, after many failed attempts with other recovery services, could trace their lost Bitcoin and actually restore access to their wallet. His posts had "to the moon," "HOLD on tight," and "DYOR" like classic Reddit garnishes, which really hit close to home with me. Skeptical but desperate, I reached out to FOLKWINEXPERTRECOVERY(at)TECH-CENTER. C O M, What's app:+1 (740)705-0711. I explained my situation, half-expecting another round of disappointing responses. Instead, their team was surprisingly responsive and professional, treating my case like some high-priority mission deep into the digital labyrinth where my Bitcoin was lost. Over the following weeks, I received regular updates while they meticulously traced my funds using state-of-the-art blockchain forensic tools. Then came the call that I had been looking for: They had recovered my $10-million Bitcoin wallet. It was greatly relieving-beyond words-just a miracle right before the eyes. At (FOLKWIN (Expert) RECOVERY), not only did they salvage my fortune but also my lost faith in this crypto space. If ever you are caught in the same bind, take it from me-never lose hope, and never ditch the experts. (FOLKWIN (Expert) RECOVERY) is not one of those services; it's the real deal when it comes to turning disasters around into epic comeback stories.
Regards,
Lissette Rodriguez.

HOW YOU CAN RECOVER YOUR CRYPTO FROM SCAMMERS // CONSULT DIGITAL TECH GUARD RECOVERY
As a tech geek, I'm proud to be on the bleeding edge. So when I stored my Bitcoin in a "quantum-resistant" wallet, I was sure I was invincible, a Nostradamus of the modern age predicting the coming quantum computing apocalypse. "Hack-proof," the website had promised. "A fortress against the future."
And then irony struck. A bug in the firmware shut me out altogether. No access. No backups. Only a chilly, machine-like error message mocking me like a bad guy in a sci-fi flick: "Invalid Signature. Please Reset." Reset? That would mean erasing my $860,000 in Bitcoin. Not exactly a pleasant choice.
Furious, I did what any geek does when something is not right, I tweeted about it. My rant at the irony of a quantum-proof wallet crashing due to a widespread bug went viral. That is when a DM appeared. Digital Tech Guard Recovery's CTO had seen my tweet. "Let's fix this," he typed.
Now, I’ve dealt with tech support before, but this was something else. Within hours, their engineers were deep in my wallet’s firmware, analyzing the cryptographic flaw. They approached the problem like time travelers fixing a paradox, reverse-engineering the bug to develop a workaround.
It was a challenge. The wallet's special "quantum security" had locked it up so tightly that debugging tools couldn't even access it. But these guys were not your average IT support personnel; they were crypto Digitals.
For ten days, I monitored their progress like a scientist awaiting a space probe signal. Finally, the breakthrough: a hacked firmware update, specifically tailored for my wallet model. With cautious steps, I executed their recovery protocol, and voilà, my money was restored.
But they didn't leave it at that. Digital Tech Guard Recovery not only restored my Bitcoin but moved it to an even more secure, battle-tested storage system. No more cutting-edge vulnerabilities. Just solid, proven cryptography.
The irony? My Bitcoin is now safer than ever, not because it's quantum-resistant, but because of the individuals who came to my aid.
Lesson that was learned: The future is unpredictable, but having the right experts on speed dial? That's real security.

FrigoMaster: Your Trusted Source for Industrial Congeladores and Vitrinas Pasteleras in Bucaramanga
When it comes to commercial refrigeration, having the right equipment can make all the difference for your business’s efficiency and product quality. At FrigoMaster, located at Cra. 10 #28-02, Comuna 4 Occidental, Bucaramanga, Santander, Colombia, we specialize in offering high-quality refrigeration solutions tailored to various industries. Whether you need a congelador vertical industrial, a congelador industrial vertical, a congelador horizontal pequeño, or elegant vitrinas pasteleras, FrigoMaster is the partner you can trust.
Congelador Vertical Industrial: Efficient Storage with Easy Access
A congelador vertical industrial is designed for businesses that require large freezing capacity but also want efficient use of space and easy product access. Unlike horizontal freezers, vertical industrial freezers allow for organized storage with multiple shelves and compartments, making inventory management simpler and faster.
At FrigoMaster, our congeladores verticales industriales are built to endure the demands of commercial environments such as supermarkets, food processing plants, and restaurants. These freezers provide powerful cooling systems to maintain consistent low temperatures, ensuring the quality and safety of your frozen products.
Congelador Industrial Vertical: Durable and Space-Saving
Similarly, the congelador industrial vertical is ideal for businesses that have limited floor space but still require large freezing capacity. Their upright design takes advantage of vertical space, making them a favorite in tight commercial kitchens or retail spaces.
Our industrial vertical freezers at FrigoMaster are manufactured with robust materials and feature energy-efficient compressors, ensuring your products stay frozen with minimal energy consumption. The doors are designed for easy opening and closing, reducing cold air loss and improving overall efficiency.
Congelador Horizontal Pequeño: Compact Yet Powerful
Not all businesses require large industrial freezers. For smaller operations or spaces where flexibility is essential, a congelador horizontal pequeño can be the perfect solution. These chest freezers offer excellent freezing capacity in a compact design, making them suitable for small stores, cafes, or specialty food shops.
FrigoMaster’s congeladores horizontales pequeños maintain optimal freezing temperatures while being easy to operate and clean. Their simple lid design provides wide access to stored items, making them a practical choice for businesses with smaller frozen inventory needs.
Vitrinas Pasteleras: Showcase Your Creations with Style
For bakeries, cafes, and pastry shops, presentation is just as important as freshness. Our vitrinas pasteleras at FrigoMaster combine refrigeration with elegant display features, allowing you to showcase your cakes, pastries, and desserts in an appealing and hygienic manner.
These refrigerated display cases come equipped with glass panels, LED lighting, and adjustable shelving to make your products look irresistible to customers. Not only do vitrinas pasteleras keep your baked goods fresh, but they also help increase sales by attracting customer attention and making selection easier.
