Lensflare17152359dDoes the power saving mode really extend the lifetime of the battery? I mean sure, it extends the time that I can use the phone without charging. But I mean the long term lifetime of the battery before its capacity drops to "practically unusable".

As an Electrical Engineering student, I understand that while the battery cycles don't get affected, the integrity of the battery is, as lower amperage means less heat, and less heat is less damage. Plus, if the cycles run slower, the same amount of cycles will take more time, virtually extending the battery life in terms of time.

Part 1:
"Capacity" is a strong term, as it just implies energy stored. This is only affected by the materials and geometric properties of the battery.
Starting from an ideal state, and a given capacity, the materials on the battery use chemical reactions to give energy, and in case of rechargeable batteries, absorb energy to undo this chemical reactions.
Thermodynamically, every reversible process has a loss, and this loss is represented by the amount of cycles a battery can endure.
As the battery's work is determined by redox reactions, geometric properties and materials; if they are cased, only temperature should affect them in a regular operation case.
The obvious: too cold may freeze components, that's a no-no. There are special batteries with gels for those cases. You can say every battery has an ideal temperature, but the truth is that most of them work for the usual range of room temperature. -

Part 2:
Regarding heat, there are 2 sources: internally, the Joule effect from the current; externally, environment temperature or other heat sources.
Effects of heat impact in the materials of the encasing and separators, which can affect the geometry of the battery; or the materials used for the reactions themselves, with the risk of phase changes. These are not spontaneous, but processes and are at play at any given moment.
So if you misuse your batteries (like, charging them while in use), or expose them to a lot of heat, you are worsening the factors that give the battery its "capacity" of holding energy.
I hope this is useful as both a technological insight and daily-use advice. Let me know if I messed it up somewhere lol
