When I was a kid, I used Dreamweaver and my mother would watch me doing things and she used to say "Oh, my dear there are lots of icons and buttons!!! How do you manage that? How do you know which one is for what purpose? You are really brilliant."
And now I use Atom IDE and she says "This looks very easy. Technology has evolved so much that you don't have to click so many buttons and just write simple lines, just as simple as writing letters and the software does the rest of the things. These softwares have done a brilliant job."

This girl from financial department pissed me off so badly I took 15 minutes of my private time to slightly modify CSS and JS for her user in our intranet panel, made everything pink and blue, animate all the buttons to randomly barrel roll and made the mouse cursor explode colourful star particles with each click.

I laughed at how in the movies hacking is portrayed as some person clicking a lot buttons really quickly in a very flashy UI. There's a picture of America and sometimes there's a 3d model rotating for no good reason or a bunch of random numbers floating across the screen. They use random hacking related terms like: backdoor, DDoS...etc in their sentences.
At least they did their research...

Has anybody noticed some people's undying obsession with making their 2018 websites look like they're from 2001? Some of our clients INSIST on using site entry pop-ups, scrolling marquee text, and as many flashing buttons as possible on their sites. These are the type of people who think: "The number of buttons on my website directly correlates to the amount of money my site makes me. I want 12 buttons, all worded slightly differently, that all link to the same exact page. This will sell more of my product. From all of my experience in UX, I am positive that users will respond to a flashing neon colored button labeled "SAVE NOW!!!!!" Nevermind that your company employs professional UX Engineers. Hardware of laptops today.
Displays: Glossy screens everywhere. "Hurr durr it has better colors". Idgaf what colors it has, when the only thing I can see is the wall behind me and my own reflection. Make it matte or get it out.
Touchpads: Bring back mechanical buttons. Haptic feedback dying with touchscreens/surfaces is a tragedy. "But we can have bigger touchpad area without buttons" ...why? the goal shouldn't be 1:1 touchpad vs. display ratio. It ain't a bloody tablet.
Docking stations: Some bright fucker figured out that they can utilize USB C. That thing keeps falling out with slightest laptop movement disconnecting all peripherals (guess why microUSB had those small hooks?). Also it doesn't have sufficient throughput, so the 5 years old dock can feed 3 full HD monitors just fine and the new one can't.
Keyboards: Personally I hate chiclet. And it's everywhere, because "apple has it so we must too". But the thing I hate even more is retardation of the arrow keys (up and down merged into size of one key), missing dedicated Home/End/PgDwn/PgUp buttons and somebody deciding the F keys are not needed and started replacing them with some multimedia bullshit.
My overall feeling is that this happens when you give the market to designers and customer demand. You end up with eye candy and useless fancy gadgets, with lowered ergonomy and worse features than previous generations of the same hardware. My laptop dying is my daily nightmare as I have no idea with what on the current market I would replace it.5 -

For security purposes, it should be good practice to lock your pc when you walk away. At my office, we practice harmless pranks when someone forgets, to "teach them a lesson". Usually just involves reversing/inverting displays, reversing mouse buttons, or changing the desktop background like this (because everyone is a closet bronie apparently)

My first learned programming language is Pascal. Really enjoy the feeling of using the blue Editor to code. Just like the hacker described in those movie. And the most satisfying things of programming in Pascal is to make a GUI interface. Using the draw command, and write every buttons and layout. And amazed with the setfillstyle options.

My own personal hell was a html page that had a script tag that called a rest endpoint that sent back a text block of JavaScript that was then dynamically executed to redirect the user to a php 3 page that was the exact same thing as the original page but with an extra bit of css to make the buttons blue and slightly rounded

Context: been coding for a year and been on react for 6months.
So im excited to talk about my achievements. Of which making buttons and menus which i share with my beloved partner.
Few months later I'm confident about my skills (that is not being a simple mortal anymore)，so i come back home and my wife kindly asks me:

Learning mobile development so far has been 5% writing code and 95% screaming at .XML documents. It's been 8 hours of work and all I have to show for it is a few buttons and a really shitty UI6

Found a rather annoying Windows 11 bug
explorer.exe, if the window is unfocused, the window buttons are correctly sized. But if you focus the window, the "maximize" button goes all retarded.

While messing around with the Windows WM_NCPAINT message, I forced the WindowProc to return without calling DefWindowProc.
This resulted in interesting effects when pressing mouse buttons down on the right hand side of the title bar. This is on Windows 10.
Bottom part of the image is when I clicked on things and is Windows 9x-XP style. Top part of the image is when the window was deactivated and is Vista/Windows 7 style. Once they appear, the buttons behave as they did (visually - e.g. highlighting) as they did on those versions of Windows.
Just found it funny to see older bits of the Windows UI still hanging around behind the scenes!

So, I got a ticket to make a page using a given wireframe that had submit buttons and other buttons to add more items in the wireframe.
So, I pull the html, hook up the abilty to submit the form and add items, and send it out for review.
One comment on the review.

My last successful project was a small project I did together with my gf in javascript. She needed to make some algorithms for school for transfering
freight containers and picking them up. I made some visuals and buttons for her to press. And she added a file with algorithms based on the helper functions I created. such as: GetFirstEmptyPosition() or PlaceContainerAt(x, y)

The code is really aligned like this - no breaks. And it's even worse. There are if statements like if("constantly false var" == true). Which is highlighted by Android Studio.
This is done in a own class. The views are set via public member variables of this new class. The constant vars were added in the actual class holding the buttons and also stuff like this useless method

Damn i had to use windows yesterday, it was awful. I was coding for 3 hours without saving and the out of the blue, windows decided to not update because i have the mental capacity to press 3 buttons to schedule updates to 6am when i dont use my pc.5

Why has Google implemented those stupid menu bar buttons across the bottom of their apps. Isn't the YouTube app over jammed already. With most android phones using on screen buttons, you have to reach your thumb over the bezel, nav buttons and menu bar just to make a scroll motion for your content. I've sent Google feedback multiple times to of course (typical Google) to no avail. Let iOS have lower third menu buttons. We don't all have an S8, which as I see it is the only way this is alleviated.

Had a dream last night...
My grandmother gave me a flip phone as a present. My first thought was "really?"
But after flipping it open, I found that it had some gaming buttons (A, B, Start, etc). Also, it had a place to insert Gameboy games.
It was the most 90's/early 2000's phone ever.2 -

Upon completion, the client rejects mine saying that I forgot to put back buttons in the top left corner of each screen.

Common misconception is that low efficiency technologies (react native, in this case) are completely useless. That is not true at all. Im building a smart home, and yes i want a mobile app, but 90% is just requests to endpoints, so its way simpler to just copy paste some buttons inside a js file than do it properly with native. Would i use it in prod? Fuck no. Would i hack together a bunch of buttons? Fuck yes.8

I have set up a raspberry pi and screwed it with some switches and buttons to the wall next to my bed, so I don't have pick the remote which lays on my shelf...

A customer once wanted buttons that would close the mask in an interface where the only way to close the mask was to click a default "OK" button. 🤔
So in the end we implemented a script on the customer's buttons that would send a calculated number of multiple keypresses of tab, tab, tab and finally enter on the default button. 🤑

this is a very Stupid idea so i wont put it to the dssue tracker. but. how about enabling people to host their own devRant servers with their very own rules? this way, the main server will have a bit more breathing room and common interests could have a shared server.
the client Would have the current buttons + empty buttons that can be given a special function from server side.
also, it would be possible to view rants from multiple servers (color coded so theres no mixup in button functions) in one feed.
the client would come with the main server on first start up. the most popular servers would be listed in the settings. also, rants with 50++ would automatically be put into the main server.6 -

Why do people get an idea that Ctrl+Alt+[character] is a good combination for keyboard shortcuts? Just because your keyboard layout doesn't have a special character for Ctrl+Alt+Z, it doesn't mean other people don't! Tester has found an issue: controller input stops working when performing certain steps.
Creates a report and provides an attachment.
The attachment depicts some menu where, at first, the cursor moves around various options, then simply stops moving.
The problem:
Since this is a simple in-game recording, there is neither an overlay of the controller w/ a visual representation of the input actually being provided but not working, nor there is a camera recording available where I can see the tester pressing buttons on a controller.
For all I know, the tester put down the controller / stopped pressing buttons.
...I've also seen reports of animations not working... w/ fucking screenshots attached.

grrr, bought a corsair dark core mouse (on sale) to use with my laptop (in school) because I got really sick my other mouse being wired. It has worked really well up until like a month ago where the fucking forwards and backwards buttons magically stopped working and will instead just type the numbers 1 and 2. This also happens only in Linux because iQueue, their driver software, is windows only.
It works fine otherwise, but goooood is it hard to live without the forwards and backwards buttons :<1 -

So today I logged into devrant and noticed that all of the ++ buttons were gone. Apparently the Fanboy's Annoyances filter list (which I enabled recently in AdGuard) includes the "plusone" CSS class, which is the class name Devrant uses for the ++ button. Whoops.
I think I might remove that filter list entirely. There's a lot of other very non-specific stuff it blocks that might break a lot of websites.1 -

Like the best looking ones are either custom mechanical keycaps, but MX switches don't come in toggle or two directional variants like for up/down car windows. Or controller buttons are nice like dpads and xyab etc.. buttons.

I'm all for enhancing the user experience. To some extent, making the UI get out of the way to focus on getting things done is admirable!
But it's absolutely *NOT* acceptable to absolutely change how established convention works.
For example, clicking a link should not perform a state change. Use a flipping button!
Checkboxes should not act like radio buttons!
(apparently non-interactable) text should not perform actions!2 -
Trying to add money to a prepaid SIM card today. Their website is a mess. Plus and minus buttons were not functioning, so my only option was to add 15 euro. Checked the console, no errors. Tried triggering the buttons jQuery, no luck. Found a data value attached to the submit button set to 15. Changed to 10, clicked submit, and BOOM, it worked! You just got engineered!
After I paid, I was curious, went back and set it to -15, and tried it again. Unfortunately, they know about backend validation. -

I'm currently improving a software made by another developer and can't seem to figure out why these two buttons appear in an input form for Mozilla Firefox and not other browsers. I can't seem to find the code that causes this anywhere in the source code.

So for my software engineering class we have to write a game in Java, and let me tell you, it has been a time.
The worst part so far has been the transition over to using a JLayeredPane, so that we actually have a background and a foreground. I offered to handle it, since I've done a bit with swing before now.
So I put together something that I thought should work, only to find that layered panes and layouts do NOT like to work together. So it was off to google...after sooo many hours of pouring over tutorials and javadocs I finally got the layers to draw...only to find that our Buttons had stopped working!
For some reason, putting the buttons inside a JPanel stopped them from actually informing their ActionListener (since the random test button I just added had actually still worked). So OF COURSE that meant I had to rework the buttons too, since their logic relied on that panel.
All in all, what should have been a relatively simple refactoring of our view was tranformed into almost a week's worth of frantic googling and pain through the magic of Java Swing.4 -
Page lists data for user. Edit button replaces the line with a form for the data line with save and cancel buttons. Both buttons replace the form back with the simple line (oc save button only does so if post was a success).
Client writes they can't go back after clicking on edit - forgets to say, where in the World they want to go back to, when they get their initial page back with updated or unmodified data depending on their button choice. -
At work i have to do all sorts of things from sql, server code etc to jquery react angular, client apps. Basically everything from programming(frontend and backend) to clicking buttons in the gui because the customer is too lazy to do it himself.
Was wonder if any of you are in a similar situation.1 -
so does anyone know about various social media clients that are true bots and not ones that actually register with the service but just emulate a web browser and fill in parts of the rendered dom and press buttons and shit ? i really don't want to have to write one in electron.14

I actually bothered to add buttons to the vscode commandbar today instead of always relying on the terminal window. So neat. Why didn't I do this a year ago?

I discovered you could edit the Visual Basic code in MS Access. I would read the code that was in there and figure out how i could extend it to do what i want. first code i ever wrote was a switch statement to control whether a set of buttons were enabled based on a dropdown value.

My poor laptop's keyboard buttons have stopped working out of sudden. Its just 2 yr old hp pavillion's quite recent laptop
Yesterday the ' ` ' button was not working, today the '-' and brightness button have stopped working , and i few minutes ago i checked and around 8 buttons are not working.
This sucks so much. I had to stop coding because i was not able to name variables correctly. 😣7 -
Belts are nice and all, but I've always found them to be particularly unfriendly towards laptops.
Buttons aren't much better, which I try to explain to people, but for some reason I still get strange looks when I go bottomless in the public library.

I finally reached a point in configuring my desktop where there is only one thing left to fix, the window control buttons.
Even though I don't think they look ugly, they make everything look a bit macOS-esque.
Can anyone recommend some or has an idea for a design?

To put a tiny mechanical switch on the side of my phone that’ll turn of the Do Not Disturb mode. No, not buttons. Standard momentary buttons don’t have a persistent state. I need the state to be persistent even when the phone itself is turned off.
How hard can it be?
Too bad literally every android smartphone since the very first one has that switch, it’s like one of android’s iconic features, and crapple still can’t manage to do this. Clearly they cut on prices, I mean switch is more complicated than a momentary button.10 -

My new microphone arrived.
I used to own Razer Seiren, but it died few weeks ago.
Now this cheap 60 dollar mic bundle's sound quality is on par with that Razer Seiren.
It just lacks all the functional buttons and knobs, and of course, a switch for illuminating logo.

I know when I first got into libGDX (game engine/framework/? written in Java) and tried to bodge together UI stuff like buttons myself. I was really happy when I got buttons pretty much working as intended.
Later that day I found out that Stage exists and all my (bad) work was useless. 🙃1 -
Rant at samsung tablet design. Those fucking touch buttons are shit. How the fuck am i supposed to hold my tablet comfortably in landscape mode when every 5 fucking seconds i accidentally press the buttons? This design has no place on any device larger than 6". From now on its physical buttons or on screen only. They dont even provide a simple non-hacky root method to turn them the fuck off and replace with on screen android buttons.
I really enjoy having a tablet and i find them incredibly useful. My only problem im having is that i seem to ALWAYS press something by accident. If its not my hand touching the samsung buttons its my headphone cable gently brushing against the screen.
I need to write an app that will lock out all input to my device until i do a certain gesture on the screen, something that cant easily be mistaken like a 4 finger infinity 😂😂1 -
That time I got frisky with VBA and spent a whole night coding to have it compile sets of data into charts, without having any experience in VBA coding. Also added buttons.

Ok, so i got an epic requirement from business.
Business wants to implement something like this. On a save click this popup should be opened with further 2 options "Save" and "Save As" having radio button in front of each button to enable and disable the buttons and input boxes and obviously error/success message should be
displayed according to the option selected.
Team denied to work on the requirement.

Having only recently upgraded my mouse to something with more buttons I realise I've been seriously missing out. A button to copy text, a button to paste and a button to take a screenshot has just saved me precious time.1

Sveltekit's progressive enhancement on forms is an obstacle more than a tool.
Submit buttons stop working when they want.
Other buttons in the forms may trigger an action via POST if their type is not defined.
Everything with no feedback whatsoever. At least tell me I'm an idiot in the form or let me know why a button type="submit" does nothing to send the form data 🤦1 -
Why on earth would you create an entire new HTMLImageElement in the javascript file just to get the width and height of an image and never render it to the DOM. FFS use MS Paint, 3D Paint or ANY OTHER IMAGE EDITING SOFTWARE to get the size.
Seriously you over engineered the shit out of the easiest const you'll ever write in JavaScript.
And for the record, the width and height of the image used are only used in formulas which produce the actual width and height of the mock buttons that get drawn onto the canvas element. And don't worry, the click event handler for these mock buttons is actually the click event handler for the canvas...which checks the coordinates of where the click was made on the canvas. And if the click is over where the button is drawn in, congrats you clicked the button. -
Anyone else thinks the desktop site looks better with DarkReader on ? (except for buttons turning pink, but that is a DarkReader problem all together)

I have never been able to find the perfect rollerball mouse. My Kensington is almost perfect but the click buttons don't work 100% of the time. Suggestions?
