My "Coding Standards" for my dev team
1.) Every developer thinks or have thought their shit don't stink. If you think you have the best code, submit it to your peers for review. The results may surprise you.
2.) It doesn't matter if you've been working here for a day or ten years. Everyone's input is valuable. I don't care if you're the best damn programmer. If you ever pull rank or seniority on someone who is trying to help, even if it isn't necessarily valid or helpful, please have your resume ready to work elsewhere.
3.) Every language is great and every language sucks in their own ways. We don't have time for a measuring contest. The only time a language debate should arise is for the goal of finding the right one for the project at hand.
4.) Comment your code. We don't have time to investigate what the structure and purpose of your code is when we need to extend upon it.
5.) If you use someone else's work, give them the credit in your comments. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
6.) If you use flash, you will be taken out back and shot. If you survive, you will be shot again.
7.) If you load jQuery for the sole purpose of writing a simple function, #6 applies.
8.) Unless it is an actual picture, there is little to no reason for not utilizing CSS. That's what it's there for.
9.) We don't support any version of Internet Explorer and Edge other than the latest versions, and only layout/alignment fixes will be bothered with.
10.) If you are struggling with a task, reach out. While you should be able to work independently, it doesn't make sense to waste your time and everyone else's to not seek assistance when needed.
11.) I'm serious about #6 and #7. Don't do it.48 -
Last time, my friend said CSS stands for
"Custom Sexy Styles" (dig into my older rants)
This time, he said
"Centering Somewhat Sucks"
Now he knows the deal.12 -
Css is most definitely a woman who's mad at you but won't tell you why.
"What's wrong? what did I do? "
"Nothing..."8 -
When you think you are a fairly decent programmer, then you try to align two buttons next to each other in CSS5
-
Creating a personal website:
Step 1: Have 20mins of inspiration.
Step 2: Spend a day writing css and js
Step 3: Realize it sucks because (ugly || bad responsive design || not enough content)
Step 4 Experience no inspiration what so ever for next week
Step 5: Repeat11 -
CSS is an awesome language. It only takes you a few years of practice to be able to style a minimalist website in a matter of days.3

I really love to share my knowledge and I have a opportunity to teach kids coding as a lector. I even switched my f-ing theme to light for them so they can see the board (they're already saying light theme sucks, I love them). Maybe it's only html/css but they're learning so fast even though they're just bunch of 12-13yo Minecraft kids 😂 I'm myself only 17 but I can see the "age gap" between us, I'm getting old...11

My rant on CSS in general, including z-index (a cruel practical joke) and the "secret menu."

I hate UI design. When you code functionality, you either make a thing work or crash, efficient or unefficient, reliable or unreliable, maintainable or unmaintainable; but in UI design there's by no means an established way to make something look pretty and that pisses the crap out of me. You cand spend countless hours working in UI design, using the latest CSS libraries and frameworks, but at the end, any client can easily say it's crap no matter how cool anyone else think it looks. UI design sucks.2
-
When you spend 1 hour trying to hide content by changing a class but then realise that you have a “display: block” overwriting said class 13 lines higher up. Fu** me. Fu** CSS.6
-
I hate JS...
I hate CSS...
What can be worse ? ...
*guy at work* : hey what do you think about CSS in JS, should we try it for our codebase ?
*other* : yeah why not ?
Me : *make a gun with my fingers, gently putting it in my mouth, remember all good things in life, no regrets* *gun noise*
Kidding, I love javascript.
But I seriously hate CSS and UX stuff.2 -
Can we agree to from now on do all our sylesheets like this?
Honestly. It takes a bit of work organizing everything but bloody hell is it easy to use.
PS I just started a decent chunk of those #ID's will be replaced it's just to build the UI up.
Also you get a + if you can guess what ui I am trying to recreate. 😂9 -
STUPID STYLESHEETS!
I've got styles in index.php and styles in style.css. When I move the styles in index.php over to style.css THE WHOLE SITE BREAKS!?!?!?
ALL I DID WAS MOVE THEM! NO OTHER CHANGES!!!
I REALLY HATE CSS.9 -
Wordpress and CSS...
REEEEEEE
God i’m pissed at this shit!!
Don’t even get me started on responsive design
When you have to override 48297 rules just to change a fucking text color
FUCK !important
YOUR !important
CSS !important15 -
So I'm rebuilding my personal site, creating a nice layout, etc. I only just thought about checking how it looks in ie. That horrible bastard browser just fucks up the layout, and I'm not sure why some css rules don't even seem to fucking work. Probably gonna say screw it and not support ie, but it still sucks.7
-
I just hate wordpress. Whenever I have to touch it, makes me nervous.
This time I just have to put some html/css. I was thinking it's piece of cake.
Couldn't be more wrong. This fucker is adding extra tags to my code fucking up what made...1 -
I just finished ny first feature at my first dev job - a gallery page connected to an api.
It took 2 weeks. About 2 days of programming, but 12 days of fucking css.
Why is css so bloody hard?7 -
The person responsible for making layouts in CSS/HTML got moved from our project and now our team had been forced to improvise by ourselves until a replacement is found.
Suddenly all those old, untouched bugs seem very appealing.1 -
I was trying to learn HTML CSS so that I could become a fullstack developper yet felt so bored doing so I didn't like them at all, did anyone else go through this why learning them also? Think I'll stick to django.7

For web devs here, do we really still need to support browsers of the evil (yeah I'm talking about MS browsers, Edge included) ?
I mean, building a css ui library here in 2017, without the benefits of custom properties, grid and so many other cool things, is so fucking frustrating.
A practical example : color theming with custom properties = Fuck Yeah / color theming without custom properties = so verbose and painfull, sucks.
The library is mostly for private usage at the moment so... I'm about to drop IE and Edge in the deepest shithole of the darkest cavern of my memory, and move on coding my lib with modern CSS, with almost no regret for the ghosts of the past who are still using these shitware today.
Should I ? Or should I... maintain compatibility as we traditionnally do ?
What's you guys opinion about this ? Can we finally kickban these browsers from our lives ?3 -
I migrated my blog from css to ionic , and i wrote about it.
I would love to read your thoughts,

I think the thing that sucks about high school (or school in general, really) is that they don't really have many opportunities for the people that like to program or do anything with computers.
The only classes that have to do with computers at all (In my high school) is Intro to Programming (Which is what I'm taking, which has HTML, CSS and JavaScript), some computer science classes and finally the Cyber-patriot team. (Which is for Navy ROTC and it consists of Cyber Security, competitions and actual Linux computers).
The only few of eight classes I find actually interesting is Intro to Programming, NJROTC, and Plant Science. (Because not only the subjects, but the teachers (and Sergeant) actually make it fun, interesting and easy to understand, while the rest don't feel like they're doing a good job.)4 -
Just spent 10min trying to figure out why everything was broken in Chrome after refactoring custom CSS to its own page, and the header to its own JSP... I forgot to clear my browsing history and thought it was broken everywhere but IE.1

CSS is the worst idea ever.
Ok, maybe it started out as a good idea.
But now it’s just a big pile of diarrhea that nobody knows how (or wants to) clean up.33 -
I HATE THIS SLOWLY FUCKASS CHEAPIE COMPUTER IT'S SO SLOWWWWW
I can't focus and actually do antything you nasty typerfucker son of a breach and I have to do CSS with the biggest headache ever holy fucking adamantine shitty shit -
Sometimes being a developer really sucks. I adopted a heavily customized OXID shop which introduced an ingame currency beside the fiat currency.
It was done by introducing $iPriceChannel and replacing the $dPrice float value with a multidimensional array across all components, controllers and models.
Wait ... not 100% of the code has been "adapted" yet but it's sufficient to get it working at the first glance.
The reality is: The shop has many subtle bugs and piles up huge (error) log files.
Every time when a bug was found,
and every time the shop maintainer is unlocking an OXID feature which hasn't been used yet, I have to fix it.
It's even extra hard to fix issues sometimes because the shop is embed in a game by utilizing a content-aware reverse proxy. My possibilities to navigate through the shop directly is limited because some of the AJAX/CSS/HTML elements doesn't work without loading this game.1 -
I can't help but stress out about finding work in development. I just want an internship / entry level summer position to put myself in a better position for post college and to explore and learn in new environments. But it seems like my best chance for scoring that internship is building a solid portfolio or experience, something that I haven't had time to do..
I wrote my first line of code (that wasn't HTML or CSS) when I got to college. Since then almost all my time has gone into my cs engineering curriculum and working a real shitty blue collar job during breaks (for 4 years now) because Im broke and got denied by the 20+ positions I applied for. I can't really do anything with the code I wrote for my schoolwork because I can get fucked if I post it anywhere or share it. I have loads of ideas, but am worried that they are too big to do while maintaining my GPA and scholarships. It sucks too because I am a quick learner, and would even venture to call myself good at what I do.
So since I have hardly been able to pursue any independent studies, I haven't been able to really explore the field, so I don't even know what to areas i need to focus on to make myself a better candidate. So basically I'm broke, don't have shit for pet projects, don't know what I want to do with my life, and can probably expect to work like a dog next summer too because I've heard most companies hire for the summer in the fall.
I don't write this because I feel bad for myself. I write this because it's likely that most people here have been in a similar situation. I also don't like to make excuses for myself like I have been doing. Any advice folks? What should I be doing differently?3 -
Before vercel released v0, an ai tool to generate html and css code for your project, I had a dream that I was writing front end code and there’s this mysterious search bar where I can just type in what I wanted and let it generate html code for me. Then the next day I saw the tweet. I was honestly shocked and I checked the tweet time, it was definitely after I woke up, so there was no chance that I saw this thing before my dream.
And the shitty thing was that I was thinking about developing this after I woke up. This sucks -
CSS and libraries doesn't mix. Something about the lack of scoping and the unintended side effects that happen from using two different libraries that add inline style via JS. I'm looking at you, position!!!!12
-
damn ios sucks ass. you seriously don't support any good css. I feel like I have to hack everything since you can't even do zindexes correctly or background-size:cover.1
-
I don't know how to earn money when i need it so bad! I am student and know just a bit of html/css that too of basic level.
This life sucks! It's so hard to learn things.
Don't even know how to get internship with this few knowledge , Even when i start something new , i skip . Don't know how to get online projects to work on.
I am useless.13
