Me: "We should remove that popup"
Marketer: "But our A/B testing statistics show a 14% increase in signups to our newsletter, and people who get our newsletter are 4% more likely to buy something"
Me: "0.14x0.04... so slightly more than half a percent improvement. And you also qualitatively measured how many people decide to never visit the page again, just because of that popup? Did you measure the how many internet users with adblockers run into a broken webpage? Did you measure the amount of emails to support from users who can't unsubscribe from the newsletter because there is no unsubscribe link?"
Marketer: "Why would they want to unsubscribe? The newsletter adds value to our users!"

Hey everyone,
For about the last 24 hours, there was unfortunately an issue with the algo feed where scrolling did not show more rants. This has now been fixed.
One of our background queues stopped processing for some reason which caused rants to not properly get marked as read for algo.
If you notice any other issues with this, please let me know. Thanks!11 -
I made a Trello board and listed some tasks for me and my team.
My boss comes in, I show him the trello board to show how I organized our tasks.
He liked it, so I asked him if we can use it more frequently.
He replied: this is your code, do whatever you want.
I asked: my code?
He replied: yah didn't just build this webpage? This interactive task manager.
Me in shock: hold on you think I built trello?
Boss: oh ... You didn't ? It looks like something you'd do for your "front end masterbaution".
Me: oh wow, well... If that was the case I would've made $425 million on top of my salary.
Boss: looked at me like meh ~ and walked away...7 -
*On a programming support forum*
Guy: My compiler keeps throwing null pointer exception at line 128.
Me: Ok. Can you post your code real quick so I could figure out what is null at line 128?
Guy: No I'm not going to show my code to someone on the internet. What if you want to steal my code?
My mind: "Dude wtf why would I steal someone's code on a support forum?"
Me: *Use the next 15 minutes explaining that showing the code is necessary so that others can actually help him, and that no one on a support forum is going to steal his code.*
Guy: "You know what I'm more convinced that you want to copy my code. I might as well just try to fix this on my own."
What?14 -
We just launched our new stories feature! If you go to the "stories" section, you'll see only rants that are over 70 words and you'll be able to easily enjoy the best long-form rants on devRant!
Just to clarify - all functionality is remaining the same. The main feed will still show all rants. Stories just makes it easier to find fun rants that involve more detailed stories/ranting and helps give them some more exposure.
We hope you enjoy! Feel free to comment here if you have any questions/suggestions about this.10 -
Was over at a friend's place for the first time in months again to just have a few drinks and some good time with two of my best friends when I wanted to show them a website.
Had my own phone turned off (NO phone use while socializing for me!) so asked one of them (the one who's still finding his way around the concept of online privacy) for their phone so I could show it.
He uses loads of Google things so I started to look for the chrome icon. Swiping all ways but couldn't find it... then suddenly:
DuckDuckGo search/browser icon!
😵😯
Me: dude the what?! YOU using a more privacy conscious browser?!?!?!
Friend: well, Google doesn't need to know EVERYTHING I search for online so I looked if ddg had an app and voila!
Me: de damn! And, how do you like it?
Friend: the results are good so nothing to complain about!
I'm proud of you, mate!8 -
So a fucking friend of mine makes me meet this fella who is a big shot according to his LinkedIn and please note has too much experience with Web Apps and Python
Me being naive actually trusted that and I meet him.
Fella: So what do you do?
Me: I am into Cyber Security nothing much I just do bug hunting for now
Fella: You know python will help you right?
Me: Sorry?
Fella: You see you have to be a python programmer for anything you want to do in CS
Me: Me yeah I kinda know python actually I am more into Ruby from start so ( Around this time I kinda sensed that he is a fake tech guy he is a corporate asshole)
Fella: show me any of your work
Me: (So to show him one of the thing I was working on I open GitHub desktop app) Me explaining blah blah blah
*Fella is in shock*
So at this point I was thinking probably he is impressed and that's why the shock right?
No a big fucking no
Apparently he never heard about GitHub or git and got blown away by the interface.
And the friend who made me meet that guy is not my fucking friend anymore that prick can die for ruining my day18 -
Best boss I have ever had?
He owned a car dealership and made me the first fulltime employed webdev in a car dealership in germany.
He believed in me and our mutual vision, and we had an awesome 7.5 years together. he gave me time to develop myself and to develop software and websites.
through my software and process optimization we were able to go from 300 sold cars per year to 3000 without hiring any more employees and without increasing workload and stress on the employees.
When I had my last day at his company, he didn't show up.
I was mad like hell, because we have spent so much time together, went to many countries together, even slept in the same hotel bed! I considered him pretty much a friend, even though he was my boss and 10 years older.
Much later he told me that he didn't show up on my last day because he didn't want to cry.
now we meet every 3 months and go out, eat and drink and just talk and laugh.
best guy ever, will never forget what he did for me.12 -
Real Story:
Manager: You have to add an extra section in the app to show more details.
Me: We are already showing so many unnecessary details. These changes are not required.
Manager: No !! You have to do it.
Me : Ok !!! So why can't we show it in the section where we are showing the other details. Why make a separate section for it.
Manager : No !! It won't be clearly visible to the user. Just do it.
So I added another section to show useless information that we are already showing it f**king everywhere else in the app.
So I released a new apk next day with the added features.
In meeting, our CTO goes through the app and ask manager....
" Why we have added an extra section for showing same details that we are showing everywhere else ???
Who approved this ?? This is nonsense !!! "
Here comes the fun part.
Manager : I don't know. I didn't ask for it. These changes were not there earlier.
And ask me.
"Who told you to make these changes ? "
I am like... F***k man you a***ole told me to do it even when i told you it will be nonsense.12 -
Our teacher wanted to show us a video in class so she opened Internet explorer (windows 7) used bing to search for the video and clicked on the link.
The video didn't work and instead there was an error message saying 'Your browser is too old, please use a more modern browser, for example mozilla firefox'
She looked at the error message for around 30 seconds like it had just told her that it is gonna explode in a minute. After some time one of my friends asked if she needed help. Here is what happened:
F: do you need any help?
T: No (very serious voice)
Teacher shuts down computer, stands up, looks at our class angrily and says in a very serious voice:
T: you broke the computer although you aren't allowed to touch it!
Me: mother of god...5 -
I've been writing PHP for more then 10 years. So, one fine day while having coffee with new tech manager...
Manager: huh, you've been programmer for very long time. Can you explain how echo works?
Me: err.. Echo. Spit out string. (show some example code on my phone)
Manager: I mean, I want to know, which part in C++ code in PHP engine. (trying to impress with jargons)
Me: I don't know. But why?
Manager: As programmer, you need to know, so you can echo more efficient.
Me: ... Errr... Ok... (I've been echo-ing for more then decade. Is there a way to make echo more efficient?)13 -
When you show the senior developer your clever solution to a problem and they come back with "you can also do XYZ" and his solution is much more elegant. Appreciate your superiors kids.4

I was recently hired as a lead devops to a giant shit show. The CTO said he needs someone to do things correctly instead of quickly. This is a conversation I just had this morning
HR: We want you to interview a potential new DevOps engineer
ME: okay, when?
HR: Tomorrow
ME: I won't be able to create interview tests and materials for tomorrow. How's next week
HR: This hire is urgent! It has to be tomorrow
ME: Then you'll have to do the interview without me
HR: We need you to interview them because we've had a few bad hires in the past that we don't want to repeat
ME: The best way to filter out bad hires is with technical tests, which will take time to develop. I can be ready by next week.
HR: We can't give you a weeks notice for each hire, we are in urgent need for more devops.
ME: ...14 -
I need more dev friends... currently drinking a beer alone. Not that I am alone but I am unable to engage in normal conversation at the moment. Just finished a 7 hour coding binge where I developed a solution which I am very proud of and which results in weeks of development time saved for the company which results in more time for proper refactorimg and Magic tournaments. I just want to sit down with a friend, show my code, ask for improvements and reason the chosen solution. And drink beer.39

Was watching a Chinese movie and there's a scene where someone is getting hacked, and this is the fucking code that they are show as the "hacking code". How hard would it have been to find something more legitimate than this?
If I hadn't had a few $0.69 hamburgers from McDonald's today, I would be more upset.14 -
Dear EA games.
If you want to tell me my password needs to be “more” secure in your error message, at least tell the fucking truth about it.
- 100 random character password entered on mobile
- response: password needs to be more secure
- WTf!
- loads on pc
- notices password rules
- must be between 8 and 16 characters...
- I think that’s a Wii little Less secure you ass hats, and WHY can’t you show this fucking notice on mobile 😖12 -
Product Owner: "need this doing in 6 months, can you do?"
Me: "we're too busy to start another project at the moment - can you wait about 6 months for it to start, or I'll have to hire more devs"
PO: "I'll just outsource it"
36 months later the company he outsourced to is out of business and hasn't delivered, and I've had their half-finished shit show git repo dumped on me.
No comments, no docs, and no units tests, so no fucking idea what it's supposed to do4 -
follow on from my last rant.
I've finally gotten my new Jira project. Only thing I seem to have access to change is the Kanban board columns. Still has 50+ fields when creating a ticket etc.
Asked the support team handling the request if this was a mistake. He said no, i'll need to open another ticket to have those changes requested.
Opened and got a reply. Currently there are 2 versions of Jira running. They are working on consolidating them atm and won't help me right now until this is done. I've been asked to re-open my request after the consolidation is done in March 2019.
5 ... fucking ... months, so I can have a competent ticketing process.
He pointed me to a page explaining the move and listing all the changes taking place. Well lets look at the changes they are making that are so critical:
Change 14: Rename "More info" status to "Needs more info".
... Oh pardon me. I didn't realise such critical show stoppers were being addressed. Please do continue. Don't mind me, i'll just be over here taking 4 hours to create an Epic and 6 stories. As you were9 -
"Enigma machine kep private the communications done by Nazi. It was a really difficult code to break because it changed each day. There was a man in England, Alan Turing, who broke it. He's nowadays known as one of the fathers of the Computer Science. I will show in the next lessons how you can simulate Enigma coder just with an easy C program of 60-70 lines. In the WW2 this was considered a military-level safe code. Thanks to mathematicians, computer scientist and analyst and thanks to their work in the last 60 year, you have access to a systems of several orders of magnitude more efficient and secure when you buy a videogame online."
That really fucking inspired me.8 -
With all the people showing off their setup and input devices i thought it's time to show you my keyboard...
Key features:
- mechanical keys
- sturdy af; best for ranting (survived more angry fist strokes than any device should ever receive)
- older than me and outlived 5 (!) mice
- awesome retro look
- would beat a nokia in hunger games
- best code buddy ever (and propably oldest, too)
Hope i'll be able to continue coding on it another 20 years... Someday i may gift it to my grandchildren.18 -
Today was fucking awesome!
I always wanted to do a project in C++ since I've been more of a Java guy for years now.
And today, I finally wrote a full console program in C++! (For windows, it's a .exe)
The purpose of that program is to show if a file has a file lock on it (because of copying for example).
It started as simple as that, but got complicated quickly:
- It needs colors! So I added colors.
- Just a single file? Boring. I need wildcards, so I can put a * for anything in the file name! Jup.
- Just one directory? Boring. I need a recursive directory walk! Got it.
- But wait! There has to be an option to switch between recursive and wildcard/single mode! So I checked if the first argument equals "-r"! Hacky but works.
- Oh uh... that spams a lot now! The purpose was to show locked files, so I need another argument to specify that I only want to see locked files! Damn now it get's hard... I need a Linux-like command line argument parser (this -h and -s "hello" stuff). So I took the opportunity to write one myself! Done.
- Refactoring everything to use my new fancy parser...
- Adding more and more arguments, just because I can:
- "-d" hides "access denied" messages
- "-l" shows only locked files
- "-r" activates recursive directory walk
- "-f" formats everything nicely, basically printf("%-150.150s | %s", filename, locked); a maximum width which get's truncated if too long so everything lines up nicely
- "-h" which of course displays the help page
- "-w file" watches a file, if the file is locked it will refresh every 500ms, if it's still locked nothing happens, if it's unlocked, the program prints "unlocked" in green and exits. And yes, it does have a rotating line (something like this: "-" "\" "|" "/" "-" and so forth...)
That project was just awesome to make. I learn languages fastest if I just do a big project in them, and today, I really learned a lot.
Thank you for reading all this!3 -
My wife: Oh, hacking is so cool. Can you show me?
Me: Sure. So there I needed to upload the php file, while my netcat was sitting here in the terminal waiting for incoming...
My wife: Boring, BORING.
Me: ....
(At least my 5yr son appreciates the terminal more than she: typing 'sl' or watching star wars in ASCII art.)5 -

Shalom my dudes!
A quick GT from my college years:
>be me
>barely knew how to program but eager to learn more and more
>end of first semester, teacher assigns a couple of classic games for extra points
>battleship, pacman, sudoku, tetris, etc. All done in C
>end up with tetris
>2 days later I have the final build, including all the tech shit like walljump
>start thinking to myself "this looks really fucking ugly, what's wrong with me??"
>look up graphic libraries for C when a light flashes on my computer screen
>*NCURSES*
>the next 2 weeks were a montage of me learning linux, understanding ncurses and redoing my code (plus bug fixing)
>presentation day
>palms are spaghetti
>knees? Spaghetti
>arms? Spaghetti
>class is impressed with my work
>professor comes up to the board and tells me that I get a 0 because it wasn't "pure C"
>clenched my jaw and walked towards the dean office
>"hey, mind if I show you something?"
>open my laptop and show him the game
>he's having a blast since every time you do a 5 row crunch (a tetris), a piece of clothing of a random model comes off
>explain to him what happened in the classroom
>he looks at my code, runs it on a plagiarism checker and tells me that he will edit the grade himself
> a week later there's a 10 on my grading area

Weekend projects are fun! Although front end is still a challenge, it looks good enough.
Suddenly got the idea to do something with letsencrypt/nginx wildcard subdomains (*.example.com) so created a project around that now through which you can check what your ip address/user agent/operating system/ip version is (maybe more to come) but due to the wildcard part you can enter quite a number of subdomains which all show the related info.
I'd find it very useful myself, not sure if other people would but oh well!2 -
German printing company's order form. Great example for how to make me NOT order there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ticket: “feature [x] doesn’t work”
Me: “I’ll need more details: how do I reach feature [x]? In which of the three projects you assigned me is that?”
Manager: “the design is in the ticket”
Me, in my head: “can you effin listen to what I told you before giving air to your mouth?”
Me, in person: “yeah I just need to know which project this refers to and how to reach it”
Manager: “but you have to open the ticket as a separate page!”
Me: “sure!” *waits 15 min, opens a ticket for more details, assigns it to manager, flags as blocking, flags the other one as blocked*
5 mins later: details are given and I can proudly fox it by remembering the manager they have to login in order to see feature [x]
Later in the workweek:
Manager at 8:00 URGENT FEATURE! MUST BE DELIVERED BY EOD
Me, 10:00 “can jump on it, need authorisation for [a procedure]
Me, 11,12,13,15,16,17:30: pings for an answer
Manager, 17:58 “ah sorry didn’t see, we can do it tomorrow”
Is this the matrix? Am I being stopped from developing cause I am randomly accessing matrix’s code without knowing it? Is this the Truman show? And most importantly: can I please take part to a manager hiring session? I am curious to see how tf you hire such peculiar people.10 -
PM was on vacation the whole sprint.
this sprint was so much more... convenient. i really liked what i was working on.
Also, team lost some of its bureaucratic discipline along the way.
colleague replacing him, in today's daily: since the sprint is basically almost over, i can really recommend to the whole team to wrap up your work of this sprint, so you have something *done* that you can deliver or show in next week's sprint review.
team: ...
oooohhh boy, let me get a shitload of popcorn for the sprint review when PM is back 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿2 -
Client(over the phone):- I want an Android app where there job seekers and recruiters.
Me:- sounds reasonable enough, ok
Client:-i want job seekers to apply for the job and recruiters to post the job.
Me(gets a bad feeling);- doable ok.
Client:- and I want an admin user who can see all the users and do everything.
Me(yup there it is):- what do you mean by everything?
Client :- you know everything, talk to recruiters talk to see everyone using the app, you know everything.
Me :- no I don't know this "everything" that you speak of, tell me more, what screens (activity) should that have and stuff.
Client (getting irritated):- everything the admin user usually does.
Me(yare yare daze):- i will show number of users in a graph.
I have a feeling this is not over yet7 -
If you make students take coding tests/quizzes on paper, don't grade them on picky syntax errors! We don't code on paper in the real world; syntactic highlighting and red squiggles will usually show you that you accidentally typed that declaration incorrectly. Understanding programming concepts is much more important than being able to write a program on paper.2

Who else agrees that the play store should have a section which tells if an app needs a mandatory login to use it ? Like why the hell does a simple offline planner todo app need you to sign-up if you don't wanna use cloud backup. Jeez the user just trusted you by spending valuable time and bandwidth downloading your app. You owe it to him to show him some features of the app before shoving a sign up in his face. As an app developer myself I really think that this kind of behaviour turns off more users than anything else.2

On an afternoon the day before delivery, we discovered a crashing bug. At around 2 AM, we had found the cause and fixed it. A short sleep at home, then back to office at 8 AM because the delivery was 200 devices containing that software, and they had to be updated manually because production had put in the old image.
We seized all available computers, even those from marketing who were... surprised. Half-way in the update, we calculated that we wouldn't have enough time until the freight service would show up.
So we asked the secretary that she should be a bit flirty to the parcel guy, invite him to a coffee and chat around to buy us more time. We closed the last parcel just when he figured that he had to continue with his tour.5 -
Yesterday I spent some time on the meta site for dba.stackexchange.com and found this one guy with 1 rep raging about how his questions aren't getting answered and how is answers are the best etc...
"I have 17 years of experience as a dba, blah, blah, blah, my answers are correct, blah, blah"
He got pretty destroyed by the mods and other users about how shit his answers were and how they weren't factually correct etc...
This just continues to show that no matter how much experience you have you won't always be right.
Same goes for my senior at work, he has 10 years more experience than me (I have 2) and he still asks for my point of view and help without being a dick about it.
I hope we'll all keep being nice people unlike that Stackexchange guy...2 -
I find smart watches so rude.
You are talking to someone and the bloody watch goes dinggg..
So the person you are talking to, stops listening, checks their smart watch, and performs whatever action they want before getting back to the conversation.
I fucking hate it. Not only you are rude to me, but also broke the chain of thought and rhythm of the conversation.
Fuck you and fuck your smart watch.
The other day I saw the office boy and the janitor wearing a smart watch. Mind you, the salaries of these folks is not more than $250 a month. Yet they have a top quality smart phone and a smart watch, where the combo usually costs more than their monthly salary.
It's important to consume and show off, than to make the bloody ends meet.
A monkey world.24 -
I wonder..
With all this master/slave/blacklist/whatever.. do people realize this is in a way increasing racism? In a sense that we are again focusing on races, differences, historical mistakes, etc. That we are turning all this and similar fuss into a social joke instead of moving on and living our lives normally. That companies are using the difference of races as a way to spread their names. Sometimes as political measures
Are you folks really okay with all of this? Don't you feel being used/abused again? Do you ever consider that racism is just a mean of getting more attention and more $$ for the companies?
I am not pro-racism, but I find it difficult to accept those who suffer/have suffered from it are okay with all this show.14 -
Windows notepad is starting to get really freaky features.
It will actually show an asterisk in the title bar if you have unsaved changes. So now you won't have to spam Ctrl-S a hundred times more often than you do anyway.
Congratulations.

By heavens creating your own api server with the Go standard lib is so easy it should be fucking criminal.
Now....on to add authentication and a nice frontend stack(prob React) to make it all spiffy and show it to my manager and see if she lets me put this shit to use at work.
It will make it more interesting. It took me nearly 1 hour to get what I needed from the docs, build it using the net package first(das right babe, pure TCP) and just a couple of minutes more for net/http and boom. Ferching info and shit left and right
Man I love this shit. Wish I could do this for a living. Stuck fucking around with css, Java and php at work instead ;____;10 -
Being an introvert I don't like to show off but it's been around 7 months I am doing internship (3 so far) and didn't tell anyone about this.
In class every faculty thinks I am stupid because I spent more time in work rather than on my college materials. Due to which other guys get recognised who are good with college studies and I am always left behind.
I really hate this feeling when you work so hard and there is no one to tell about my achievements.7 -
!rant
I would like to ask you guys for advice.
I am a content manager who is gradually given more and more dev tasks. That is great because I want to become a webdev. However I have one big issue. Whenever I write code (any code) I feel ashamed because I know that anyone else could do better. I am also ashamed to show my work to my colleagues because I am afraid of what they might think of me. I know that they are good people and they would probably help me out but still...
Someone once tried to explain to me that I am not my code and whenever my code is being evaluated I am not the one who is being judged, it is my code, my current knowledge. I understand conceptually what he was trying to tell me but I just can't feel it.
Did you have similar feelings when you started out?
Thanks in advance.18 -
Yesterday I completed a transactions module that used an external payment processor, similar to PayPal. It was hard, but after few hours of trying out different options I finally managed to get it to work.
I decided to create a simple prototype UI without any styling just to show my progress to the manager and let him know that it's working.
His response? "yeah, that seems to work, but that UI is terrible and not appealing at all. Change that immediately and try to add more thought into your design"
I guess I won't be making prototypes any time soon6 -
Nothing makes me cringe more that some dumb fuck jabbing their finger at any computer screen to show me what they’re talking about. DON’T. FUCKING. DO. THAT. What makes you think it’s even remotely good for the displace? Do you see it freak out the way it does, that’s not a good thing. Stop fucking doing that!3
-
Just had my first demo here. The resolution of the screen was set at 150% screwing more up then i hoped for.
I didn't dare to show the iPad version. I had seen enough bugs in those 10 minutes.
Don't put this developer in the center of attention. Please.2 -
A fucking rant to me from myself.
I want to take control of my life. I want to fucking change my life. Want to move my lazyass and want to work on myself. Want to build awesome stuff want to help others want to change something for good. Want to learn new stuffs want to learn new skills want to travel want to go see new place want to know about other countries and learn about their culture and want to tell them "we are fucking humans stop finding stupid reason to hate each other for literally any fucking small reasons. Stop fighting yes there are bad guys, really fucking bad guys who deserves to die. Then kill them and finish the matter stop fucking keep making complicated and keep involving more and more. There are little kids who keep dying and need our helps it's feel so helpless sometimes and we sitting on sofa eating popcorn and complying about government there are kids in every country who don't even fortunate enough to have basic human needs and there are people who fucking throw food over there mood. A fucking Mood. Gosh I hate people sometimes so much.
Don't know why fucking writing all this on a Devrant supposed to talk about our devshit but couldn't control more.
A introvert don't got many friends to talk this shit and most of them worrying about there Instagram followers fuck this shit .
And here I am fucking trying really hard to pass on fucking useless boring exams for fucking degree which doesn't speck about your skills or show to the world anything besides you are good at memorizing shit.6 -
I think I'm falling in love. With TDD.
I used to be very skeptic about it. You know, the usual reasons: it takes longer to deliver, constant "flow" interruptions, etc, etc. But ever since I've tried it I'm nothing but happy about my choice :)
I'm moving forward, I'm not making any regressions, I'm no longer afraid to make any changes in my code as I know tests will show what exactly I break,.. And most importanty, I have all use-cases with corner-cases defined and "explained" in the code... No more do I have to search in Confluence for how this exact scenario should behave. Everything is here. Everything's in the tests.
It's amazing!
Yeah, it DOES take longer to deliver so if you're hardcore Agile living by "Ship it as soon as it compiles" TDD might be too slow. But if you prefer knowing when your code is covering all the use cases w/o any errors -- TDD is the way.12 -
I just spent 2 hours helping a fellow Sr Dev format an “if block” in code. Then helped show them how to step through the code. This is what passes as a senior at my company? I no joke have stayed at this job for 6 more months than I wanted to out of pure pity for my team. I want to quit so bad, but the team is in such terrible shape and can’t hire anyone new that is willing to stay. All good people personally, but gosh this job is just brain dead and eats my weekends when I should be focusing on family. Back to helping through the 500 line if block. There are worse things in life, but this just feels terrible.11

Manager: We have a new equity survey from HR that is ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY. Anyone who doesn’t fill it out will be severely reprimanded for being against diversity in the workplace. We need this data in order to ensure we have the ABSOLUTELY EXACT ratio of EVERY minority so that we can show the people that we do not discriminate against ANYBODY for ANYTHING. One of the problems with hiring new people is that most people we want to hire turn out to be white and we are absolutely not allowed to hire any more white people because we are over the quota for white people. Hiring process is fucking broken ok?
We all do have something else to do, nobody wants to do "homework" for 4 fucking hours. Which let's be real, isn't 4 hours. It's always more. I try to squeeze it in a least amount of time which means mistakes will be made. I always try to show my knowledge of the language and it's features. But, you didn't do X. That's it, that is a no from us.
Dude, I just wrote a high production grade small project with 90%+ test coverage and you are telling me that those 2 small shit I made is a big deal? Fuck off
Most companies I worked with have a code full of shit and here I present to you, with a poetry and it's a no because of X?
My bet is that if I ever started to work there I would find a code that isn't tested and is in shit state

Boasting you know programming just because you watched some programming videos doesn't help in any of the case, I learned this the hard way because I tried to show off in front a girl and turned out, she knew more and better. This was when I was 14, very bad memory14
-
"You should record video tutorials of how to do stuff", people say to me.
#1 - I suck on camera. I have a really annoying nasally voice that I just can't stand to hear in my own head, let alone on video.
#2 - I look like every stupid a--hole fat old ugly white guy people love to hate. Nobody wants to see that.
#3 - I suck at remembering what the f$$# I was going to say to begin the video, to show the thing I was going to show, and how to end it without sounding like a complete #@#%@# moron.
#4 - %@%$#@ QuickTime! And any other video screen recording software that NEVER $%#@#$% WORKS for me!! I'll be in the middle of a very complex process I'm demonstrating and BAM! The whole recording crashes. Six takes and six more crashes later and I'm @#%#@# done with trying to do this #@$@#%.
Screenshots and text it is and always will be.9 -
I worked once in a company which had this tourist app which should show places on map of the city. Unfortunately it slowed the App down to load more then a couple of places. Their solution was to limit the number of loaded places to teb and prohibited zomming out. I made it handle thousands of places at the same time. Main reason for the Performance issue was, that they sent all data they had about places big, big json objects with large text blobs) to the frontend. This part was easy, I instead sent only the data needed for the map like coordinates and icon type obviously. But still the backend struggeled hard with many objects from the DB, because they built a really shitty orm or what ever this was supposed to be: every line of data retrieved from the DB was immideatly wrapped in some class wich direved from another class which had some magic methods in it which caused some absurd loops over all other obejcts and even more DB queries in unexpected moments and also in the fucking constructor. So it turrned out that the map issue was only the top of the iceberg, since using any data from the DB was extremely expensive. The hard part was to understand the insaness of this abnormination and find the bottlenecks.7

Was in a meeting(been quite a lot actually) with a lot of people that hold "director" in their title. As per our institution's salaries and ranking description, they do not "outrank" me. Our titles are just different, but they are there with me.
It surprises them quite a bit when they try to have some hold in the direction of my department just for me to tell them that they do not really get to tell me what to do or how to do things after I show them said chart. It surprises them a bit more when they find out what I am saying is completely true.
I don't appreciate people trying to manhandle my employees.
The conversations that follow are quite interesting as I am quite vocal in our interactions.7 -
Is it because my browsing history already suggests I am a retard who sucks at programming?
YouTube now show this whenever I click any video about web dev :(
"You need a website. Why not do it yourself. ... choosing from more than 100 templates... "12 -
I just started a job as a junior C# dev.
My project at work includes:
-no coding style
-multiple classes in one file
-all classes are static
-who needs interfaces?
-typos in variable names
-more than 3 levels of inheritance
-conf files such as "blabla.xml"
-comments? documentation? nope
-copy&paste everywhere
Client outsourced this project to us to get the job done properly :D
Looks that I have some opportunity to show my talent.10 -
Managed to make myself look like a fucking moron again today...
Can't mount NFS share, get "permission denied". Huh, that's weird... It's correctly exported.
Well it's correctly exported and rpcinfo -p $HOST times out... Must be firewall rule.
Firewall rule is changed but still no joy "permission denied"... Fuck sake networks, can't you do anything right first time?!!!
Firewall rule is correct I am reliably informed... Go about proving that it's not fucking correct and provide "evidence" to show this, I was a little bit more blunt than was strictly required.
Networks say they will take another look.
I turn NFS logging to verbose for my own interest and notice the line "path/to/directory is not a valid directory".
I, as a moron, had missed a "/" at the start of the path. That's why I still couldn't mount after the firewall change.
Go over and apologise in person and explain how I'm a total idiot. -
We get so spoiled with stuff at work that it is starting to show.
Way too much paid personal time during the week makes me lazy.
People bringin biscuits and shit make me fat.
Keurig machines all over the damned place.
Birthday celebrations left and right.
And much....much more and I love it.8 -
Didn't had to fix anything (so far). But took my dev laptop to show all the projects I've been working on to the dad of my girlfriend and he showed me his projects.
He's not mainly a dev, but an electrical ingenieur. He designs his own pcb boards (with 8bit processors on them, as "that's more than enough power to do almost anything!") and then programs that stuff with basic (he writes his own firmware for it).
He also creates desktop application to get data off the devices using Delphi.
Love that guy and have a shittln of respect for him!1 -
I miss the good times when the web was lightweight and efficient.
I miss the times when essential website content was immediately delivered as HTML through the first HTTP request.
I miss the times when I could open a twitter URL and have the tweet text appear on screen in two seconds rather than a useless splash screen followed by some loading spinners.
I miss the times when I could open a YouTube watch page and see the title and description on screen in two seconds rather than in ten.
I miss the times when YouTube comments were readily loaded rather than only starting to load when I scroll down.
JavaScript was lightweight and used for its intended purpose, to enhance the experience by loading content at the page bottom and by allowing interaction such as posting comments without having to reload the entire page, for example.
Now pretty much all popular websites are bloated with heavy JavaScript. Your browser needs to walk through millions of bytes of JavaScript code just to show a tweet worth 200 bytes of text.
The watch page of YouTube (known as "polymer", used since 2017) loads more than eight megabytes of JavaScript last time I checked. In 2012, it was one to two hundred kilobytes of HTML and at most a few hundred kilobytes of JavaScript, mostly for the HTML5 player.
And if one little error dares to occur on a JavaScript-based page, you get a blank page of nothingness.
Sure, computers are more powerful than they used to be. But that does not mean we should deliberately make our new software and website slower and more bloated.
"Wirth's law is an adage on computer performance which states that software is getting slower more rapidly than hardware is becoming faster."

Boss: [tells me to do a thing]
Me: [does a thing]
Boss: [mad because I didn't do the thing his way]
Me: [physically numb from putting up with this shit for 3y now]
I've been checked out at work for awhile now, but today was some next level BS. I had to throw together an application demo in 3hr, couldn't take lunch today because I needed to sign for a package, sold an 3y old laptop on Ebay (and got chewed out because he thinks it's worth more than that).
The only reason I still show up to this shit-show of an office, is I don't want to leave my only other coworker with our boss.. That, and my interview isn't until monday....2 -
I feel this is more of a show off, and lacks good creativity, but seeing young Kurt there made me excited2

I have had this job for 2 years - my first real job. It has been very very stressfull for the last 6 months and it feels like everything is falling apart in the company. It's a small work place with only 6 people in total.
A week ago my boss wanted a meeting and I got a feeling on what the subject may be. I was right about my thought. I was being fired because he feels like everything is falling apart mainly because of me. Though, I don't feel the same way, I think more it's the whole team that failed.
But the most weird part. I'm getting fired, I then have 3 months left, though, he says that I can in those 3 months show my value for the company, and if he thinks that I again have value, I can stay.
Who the hell fires an employee and right after says, you can stay if you prove your value? I don't really feel welcomed here anymore.
My motivation have drastically fallen the last week and I'm just sinking more and more. Maybe it's a good thing to get away and get a new job that values me and doesn't stress me the hell up.
I've been the only developer for over half the time here and I can feel that.
I just had to get out with this, so thanks for reading my small rant about my shitty life :)8 -
At my last startup, the company decided to formally adopt core values after being in business for ten years already. They even emblazoned them on a mouse pad and sent it out to every employee as company swag. I quickly learned that those values were more for show. It was a sign of the culture going downhill. Values included teamwork and collaboration. But since I was only an IC and wasn’t a manager or director or VP, I was expected to be a mindless worker bee. Even when I just asked logical followup questions, I was treated like I was being insubordinate and “questioning their requests.”1

It should be FUCKING ILLEGAL to show intrusive popups on the web AND on the desktop. The fucking moron 'developers' who do this type of crap should be fined in the $M range and then banned from using a fucking computer ever again.
It's one fucking thing when a crappy program shows an intrusive update popup when you open it (see notepad++, FileZilla and more), but when I am not even using your fucking malware, but you still shove an update popup in my face while I'm working is just on the next fucking level.
There should be a law that makes this kind of retarded bullshit illegal....22 -
Lesson I learnt the hard way today: ticket every fucking task (including admin) to:
A. Cover your arse (if the tickets are not ready because they haven't given us enough information, push back on it before committing too much effort to doing it)
B. Better deliverable (what you output will probably be better quality because you worked out the requirements upfront + you know the audience)
C. You have something to show management when they want to try and overwork you some more4 -
First and foremost: do more to show my wife that I love and appreciate her. Not dev but damned important.

It seems like there are more lower-quality or duplicate comments on rants these days.
Please, save me some time and show a little respect for members of the community by ++ the comment you agree with instead of adding a nearly identical comment and tagging the commenter.
Additionally, comments like '@commenter 😂' when the great comment is still at +0 generally don't add to the discussion and should probably be downvoted.
Comment if you think you can add something, not just because you saw it.11 -

My computer science class in school is learning c# so slowly that last year it took 3 weeks for them to learn what an integer is.
I learned most of the language on a vacation last year and now I don't show up for class.
and actually, my teacher doesn't mind it, she encourages me about learning more and doing projects.
best teacher I've had so far.
recently the class teacher noticed me when I go home instead of going to class and he made me come to every lesson. Really frustrating.10 -
Client wanted a site for the 100th anniversary of an important local musician. They wanted to show calendar of events, biography, store, and more. We started the work 8 months before the commemorative date, and after 4 months, the site was 99% complete and waiting final review and approvement. 2 weeks of silence has passed, when I got an email saying their deleted the site from server and all backups, and now they wanted all the work back.
With luck, I could restore a partial backup, and the client didn't want to pay for redo the rest of the work.
10 months later (yes, after all the events has started and the site being off) they contact me again, asking to continue the work.
I was happy to say no.1 -
Just hired an entry level developer in my company. Just graduated. He doesn't know what is code debugging, does not know difference between IDE and text editor like atom.
He doesn't know what is Bootstrap and git.
Gave him a task in AngularJS 1. Gave him 3 weeks and a half time. Read data from webservice, show them in table, filter, sorting and show details per record (which is easy in AngularJS. I got the same task years ago and finished in 2 days after I finished my AngularJS 1 tutorials). He did not finish any of those.
I know I'm judging but come on. What have you done these three years university? Only partying? Have not bothered reading something online? FOR THREE YEARS?
P.S. I have learned everything myself. Coding, debugging, structuring etc. I've had the bad luck that my 2 first bosses and team leader used to tell me "Do not ask anyone for help here in the office. Google is your best friend." And he encourage all developers not to help each other.
Ad I am writing this, I told him to download and install PyCharm and get back to me. It's been one hour and I have not heard anything from him. 1 Hour to download and install something. Imagine how long will it take to do a task.
Even my girlfriend (Yes, I have one), who dislikes computers can do this.
That's why I'm so frustrated.
I am thinking of firing him. Or should I give him more time?
I mean, if he can not do a simple task only by showing data in a table (which he can find them on Google, worst case scenario, how can he do more complex code, structuring it, etc ?)13 -
Well, this is a rant about devRant! Sorry.
I like devRant, especially when my internet connection is fast. But when it is not, it is very annoying to wait for a rant to load whenever I click [read more]. I found myself skipping interesting rants that I want to read just coz I don't wanna be waiting doing nothing during the loading screen!
Suggestions for how to improve this:
- Just like facebook and devRant web app, Increase the limit of the text that loaded when loading the rants feed. Not all of it has to be visible in the feed, but when clicking read more, show the rest so I can continue reading the rant while the comments are loaded.
- If not, then like youtube, load the whole rant first from the server when clicking read more before loading the comments.
- (Even for short rants) when clicking on a rant, show the loaded text while fetching the rest of the rant. This way I can at least click the rant, and continue reading till the rest of it (or comments) is loaded.6 -
Everyone working a non-tech/programming job I talk to finds this daily standup meetings we have utterly laughable and micromanage-y.
Someone at work thought it would be nice to replace Wednesday's standup half hour with a "Wellness Wednesday" session. We had to find something around/on our desks at home that has a lot of meaning to us and show it and tell everyone why it has meaning to us. I literally couldn't find anything here besides my trusty pistol and I was like "it would be inappropriate to flash a firearm on camera in a meeting, blah blah blah." Maybe I should do more awkward shit like this so they stop this madness.
This is getting ridiculous.9 -

Buggered by Xcode AGAIN. The inability of the debugger to do basic debugging relinquishes it to the status of "bugger", relieving it of its "de" title.
Can't show some basic expressions... copied and pasted from the running code
I mean seriously, what do you do if the debugger has more bugs than your project you are trying to analyze?2 -
The ones who use it, what do you like or value about Linux? Why do you use it?
Before I answer, let me say that I am a noob compared to the rest of this community. I run Ubuntu because Arch was too complicated when I tried and bash scripts equal to frustrations for me. That's my knowledge level.
- I don't feel "observed" when using a Linux distro compared to Windows and macOS.
- Feel more connected to the open source thought and the free spirit.
- Feel like I can do anything I want. Learning new programming languages easily, trying out web servers, try and setup own website or mail server etc.
- Everything is accessible. Read something cool about docker? ALT+T to open a terminal and start up a docker container to try out.
- No Internet browsing for software, like googling "Firefox download english".
- Sometimes forces me to learn about the workings of a computer, like networks, servers, routing, firewalls, bootup sequence etc.
- So many great command line tools. Want to find out quickly who owns a website? Want to query a specific DNS server? All possible within 5 seconds!
All in all using Linux feels like watching a documentary while using Windows is more like watching a dumb comedy show where I can turn my brain off, but get more stupid after a while.6 -
Fuck people that do not show up on Mondays because"they're sick".
Thanks for extra workload of two more people on top of my already two-man job.7 -
Since memes have become an integral part of our community, I propose a way to handle them without affecting the actual Ranters.
Everyone adding a meme or a gag picture can do so under a particular tag, and the Algo can handle your meme needs by exposing you to that particular tag based on your activity with such posts.
Or you could just make the users search for memes if they wanted to see them.
This could also be done vice versa by ranters using a RANT tag, I would keep my RANT filter on so anything without that tag won't show up
To make it better you can provide a sort of suggested tags option :
|gag|¦¦¦|meme|¦¦¦Ranf|¦¦ scroll to the right for more... Kinda thing
@dfox @trogus please tell us what you think about this8 -
ARGH the next person to tell me how X is the best toolchain is getting their fucking head cut off! Holy fucking shit, this is even more annoying than the whole IDE debate. At least with IDEs everyone has a favourite one and they hate others accordingly, with build toolchains there's always a huge group of fucktards sucking each other's dick by adding new features, and they're always too busy wanking their sparkling features for small projects to realise how fucking inefficient their polished dings and dongs are for any bigger job.
For the millionth time, no, we're not switching to this popular toolchain just because it gave you a blowjob with your pet project (although that would indeed be a tempting offer), so stop talking how fast and flexible it is. Until you can show how it compiles a 500 MB project faster than our current setup, I don't give a shit how many people jerk on that nookie.3 -
Tech Lead: We need to exclude logged in user from our all users API as we don't want to show user's self card on the frontend with other users.
Me (Backend dev): This should be handled by the frontend and they should exclude it by a condition in their loop:
If (user.id != loggedUser.id)
{
// Add card
}
We also need self user at several other places.
Tech Lead: Create a query param filter for that.
Me: We should keep our APIs as generic as possible.
(Real thing starts)
Tech Lead: Which has more processing power frontend or backend?
Me (confused): Backend
Tech Lead: This will add a break to our loop and Do you know how much processing power it will take because of this condition?
Me (dead): WHAAAA....?18 -
A fellow <insert some data science title here> giving me more acknowledgement than all of the old guys running the show and, erm, "leading"?

!isNotRant(this);
I'm an avid user of Snapchat and have used it for quite a while, but there's always been something that pisses me off.
When an app gets an update, I'm quick to check the changelog and see what's now and what's been fixed. That's my little snippet of information I like to know on a release. And then there's Snapchat.
They put fuck all in their changelogs. By fuck all I don't mean a little bit of information, I mean they don't list anything. They, instead, lost features from their last major release which could've been 10 or so releases back. Even Twitter's "Fixed some bugs" is more informative than their bs.
So I ended up writing a well worded and surprisingly clean message in their feedback section about this, but I'm not expecting much. In short I said "You changelogs are crap, you need to put more into them to show a bit more respect, showing stuff from a few releases ago isn't helpful" and my favourite "if you can't do it in the team that releases, get the primary devs to write the changelogs for you".
I'm saying this here to see if anyone agrees with my opinion. If you're going to release an update, you really need to tell us what's updated.
Thoughts?13 -
A colleague had to show up for a demo in 10 minutes, and urgently needed to fix some CSS.
I told her the right way would take more than 10 minutes. The quick and dirty way was to add an `!important`.
I made her write a comment:
`// TODO: Fix this hack made for the demo dated blah blah`4 -
I went to a friend to help him learn angular. I asked him to show me his code, he opened sublime text, the code was all white ...
- aren't you using a TS plugin ?!
- what is that ?
- since when are you coding like this ?
- more than a week ...
I installed the plugin, than showed him VSCode.
Hi bought me a beer later c:1 -
Childish thing really, and slightly related to my current job
Was working on a small pet project (it was a website really) back in college, and collaborating with another friend on it who lived in a different city. Had to show him my progress but he wasn't a programmer, just had to show him how much front end part is done and the functionalities till that time. Of course hosting it online was the best solution, but I was a student and broke.
So I got this python script caller pagekite which would make my laptop into a server for the duration I run the script. It ran but I couldn't manage to show him the site for days since I didn't know where it was connecting to. (No one had any docs on it back then)
Did some tinkering and saw that it connects to localhost, so I fired up my xampp server and it worked as I wanted it to :')
Since that day, I decided that I want to be a developer and learn and implement more of such things.
Moral: the smallest, insignificant things can sometimes give you the most happiness. -
Debugging JS,
*uses chrome devtools*, breakpoints work, everything loads, can work on fixing bug
*uses firefox devtools*, takes more time than IE to show up, the UI doesn't show up, can cry in the corner.
Why is firefox debugger so bad :/6 -
Is it just me or has german tv become more and more ad-ridden? A few years ago it was considered a dick move to play a single ad during an episode.
Now some channels continue the tv program but make it smaller so they can show an ad on the sides. And whenever i switch to the most popular channels i get an overlay that is basically an ad too.
I switched to livestreams and web-based tv for a reason, and that's because tv ads get more intrusive with every year. And don't get me started on the bullshit that smart tv's do nowadays, by that i mean sending data home.
I can't wait for tv to die out or to be replaced by an ip-based protocol just like telephones did.6 -
I hate this trend. Take up the whole screen for one big nothing. Yep, 1920x1080 is apparently not enough to show me more than motto, one link and freaking big image nobody care about.
Fuck, i must code it. Oh damn, there is 8 same sections on the whole page. Don't worry, not a single one of them worth reading! FUCK YOU designers!14 -

So i am a diabetic and carry an insulin pump. Now being in India, the pump is not covered by insurance (for some god forsaken reason that I don’t know) and therefore is not a common sight here (contradictoraly India has a major diabetes problem). So I was at the metro station going through security check and the security personnel asks me what the pump was and asked me to show it to him. Now since insulin pumps are uncommon here I understood his concern and showed it to him. Now I like to carry the pump under my shirt with a clip pouch. So naturally I had to lift up my shirt to show it to him. But this isn’t the highlight of the story.
The guy behind me rised above and started peeking over my shoulder and constantly repeating like a 2 year old child what is this. And that too with my fucking abdomen exposed. I went into rage mode there and then like wtf dude, none of your business just step back a little.
Now my issue is that I do not understand that in their own curiosity, why do people forget to respect others privacy. And a very big problem with medical equipment manufacturing organisations (yeah you medtronic). Why are you only concerned with sales and why not awareness? I mean spreading awareness will only help your sales as more people will become aware about your product and it will be less awkward and concerning for people like me to wear your device out in the public5 -
I know this guy through some mutual friends that tries to brag about everything he does that involves a computer in some way.
One time (probably 4 months ago), he used inspect element to replace the text on the Google homepage with like Amazon versions (Amazon mail, Amazon drive, etc), then proceeded to take a picture of the screen WITH HIS PHONE and show every single person he saw.
Every time I talk to him, he always brings up some pointless thing he did to make it seem like he knows what he's doing. But whenever I mention some more specific stuff (today I mentioned Linux), he claims to know exactly what I'm talking about but quickly changes the subject to something about his car (he drives a Jeep and has to let everyone know, like an Arch Linux user)
Dude just claims to know everything there is to know and can't back it up and it gets more annoying every fucking day
Anyone else ever have to deal with someone that clearly don't know a ton, but knows just enough to be dangerous/annoying as fuck?14 -
HR: good news! We're going to be moving your whole floor to a **newly renovated floor** in our main building.
Me (thinking): sounds good! It'll be all new and I'll be reintegrated with the main population, see young ppl (girls) finally.
HR: there will be no assigned seating though. Do you think you will have any problems finding a seat since your deaf?
Me: Hm.... should be fine... (Thinking: so no nobody will care if I work from home or not...yes!)
HR: Actually they said they can give you a fixed seat!
Me: wow thanks!
(Wait... Fuck... Did they actually review my low physical attendance rate so now if I become the only guy with a fixed seat on the floor, I will have to show up more instead of working remotely whenever I want (the rest of my team are in different countries)... I will literally be the center of attention...)4 -
So I help teach a class of high schoolers to program and I want to pose a question, what can I do to give & better more interesting presentations, and what should I avoid?
Today I gave a presentation and the first half of showing them some practical things you can do with Python didn’t go as well which I figured would be a little boring,
but the second half I showed them a script I wrote to install fonts in Linux and I essentially set it up so that I could rewrite it in front of the class and I walked them through the process of rewriting it to show how useful loops are and they really enjoyed watching the process, so I thought about doing more stuff like that where I just walk them through problems but Idk
Let me know what you think I could do better17 -
Usually my workplace is pretty chill, but today something rantworthy happened!
During code review, I found this guy had styled each element inside his components using nth-child selectors. For instance, in a card the heading was styled by nth-child(1), the text was styled by nth-child(2) and so on... No use of actual fucking classnames.
When I pointed this out, he told me it was actually the better way of doing things because classnames increase the size of the HTML document!
He also claimed proudly that nth-child() is more efficient in performance (idk - anybody can confirm this?)
I'm the only "css guy" there so nobody could second my views. Posting it here so that I can show this to him tomorrow by demonstrating what opinion other css devs have on this and prove my concerns / convince him to change his code.7 -
Me: Professor could you please see my code i have a doubt about it.
Professor: Wait a second.
In the mean time my HP laptop that was from 2006, and this story happen 2 years ago, overheated and shutdown. Remember that i was coding in it.
Professor: Ok let's see the code.
Me: I can't show the code now since my pc overheated and shutdown, and now i have to wait him to cooldown to turn it off.
Professor: Your laptop remember when i was a kid and we had thoose old TV where we had to wait for it to heat before we could see any image.
Well thanks HP for your old laptops that heated more than my hoven.4 -
Why are product managers always so irritating. I mean i understand they can't code, but then why do they have to be so nosy about status updates.
Its not like if i show progress to you it'll get done quicker. In fact more likely than not it will get delayed. Because you'll start realising things you haven't really thought about.
I somehow feel they are there to only make the entire environment just much more frustrating.6 -

If there's a from: parameter, now we want to do after Nov 1st, right?
And also, don't show me how to sort in reverse order, either. Not without a complete rewrite of my class there, which clearly I'm too lazy to do right now.
Fuck the Gmail Api, responsible for weeks of wasted dev time... or more aptly put, "fuck devs using our gmail api" says the maniacal, sociopath devils that created it

I have met a game developer today who genuinely browse the internet using MS Edge by choice.
His reason: sine I was little I loved Microsoft, I accept the fact that some websites don't show properly on Microsoft's browser, by using their browser I keep reminding myself that loyalty to what I love is more important than practicality.
My response to him: bbut... As long as you're happy!
As a web developer I feel that myself and other web devs have the responsibility to kick Microsoft in the butt to make their browser good enough for loyal people like that guy!14 -
I started using duckduckgo about ten years ago and have evangelized it ever since, including on devrant, but I think I've just about had it with it. Let me explain.
I was more than happy to accept the less-than-google results for standard searches, because I could force the site to only show me results that matched an exact string if I put quotes around it, or force the results to include or exclude results with words with minus or plus characters before them.
But that's all gone now. Now, plus just means, "show me more results with this word," and minus means, "show me fewer results with this word." Wrapping a string in quotes doesn't mean you require anything exact anymore. The name of the game with DDG now is the same as Google: engagement. Narrowed results or fewer results means less chance of clickthroughs, and you can't sell ads that way.
For normal searches, I'm off duckduckgo. It makes me sad.
Let me clarify though that DDG's bang searches are still fully functional, and are still an absolutely indispensable part of my workflow. I use them well over a hundred times a day, every day. I updated my rofi script for web searches to use qwant, but still go to DDG if the search string begins with a bang.5 -
So despite being able to do my entire job much more effectively from home, it's been demanded that I go in 2 days a week that "show my face".
Upon getting to the office there's no parking spaces, I go round the carpark again and woohoo there's a space!! Awesome..
I come back a few hours later to work the afternoon from home and find 2 cars double parked behind me..
Both owners seem to be off site currently.......... I guess this is my life now sitting in the car park waiting for people to move their cars 😂5 -
Does anybody realize that most installers which have a "show more" button, doesn't have a "show less" button after you clicked it?
Nobody thinks about such things.2 -
I don't have anything to say about getting a dev job in some company. But I can give some tips on attracting clients for your freelance work.
* Have a few projects of your own hosted on Github to show off your quality code.
* Contribute to others' open source projects if possible.
* Get yourself a nice website and showcase all your work.
* Ask your current clients to write testimonials on your work and post it in your website.
* Be nice to your clients. Chances are they'll refer you to their friends and family.
That's pretty much all I've done and I get more freelance dev requests than I could take. -
Nuclear controversy:
I like how devrant doesn't show the ranter's name in the feed, so that people can upvote in a more unbiased way, otherwise let's be honest girls will cause a rant points gender gap.
Every time I see a girl's profile badge, it has thousands of upvotes, I think some IT folks boot up a whole peep show in their head just out of seeing a female profile.
(don't take that seriously, it's just a funny thought, I don't think it's true, but it's worth the joke)5 -
Building a website using Wordpress and Visual Composer for a client is pretty easy, right?!
Until the clients wants to change one of the icons to sofa “you can’t use image, and visual composer has a list of only 5 icon libraries and none of them has a fucking sofa icon”.
Manager says just do it today!
Ok no problem.. just had to figure how visual composer communicate with the libraries to show them in the module area, edit the function, create the font/svg files for the new icon, edit the css file of one of the libraries to add the icon. And boom its working fine!
No tutorial about this stuff so had to figure it out by reading the code and see how they did it so I can do it.
After finishing this, they just gave me few more changes as I have done nothing.
Thank you5 -
So this PHD fresh graduate work in our department for a year boast about how professional a PHP developer he is. Today, he , my the other 2 co-worker and I have to submit the project, He technically "Taichi" his responsibility away and said he can't do this and that. Expect we do everything for him. What is more sad, is as a PHP as he boasted, He dont even know how to use Xampp, apcahe.
Our CMS messed up because of him, Server are F***ed , he keep sabotaging our source code that works, and made one of my coworker cried due the stress he given. He keep telling us that how professional he is, how suck we are. Ironically, he as a professional , he can't even do the basics like even know echo" something "; can also printf("something"); in PHP. He said he studied in US and from Jordan. I know that people like me only have Olevel in Malaysia. So dont show off to me a foreign certification that can't even help you to complete the job.
I hope this project can be complete without this guy. All show and no go. Where's the team work tho?12 -
Are there more people here who prefer codual over visual?
UML diagrams are fun and all, but I personally prefer to have a code example over an uml diagram when it comes to a few classes that work together. Not exactly sure why I prefer it that way, in my head I translate uml to code in order to understand it better and if you show me a piece of code I don't have to do that translation.
I wonder what you guys' thoughts are 🤔5 -
- I buy product X online.
- AFTER buying it, I'm flooded with ads about the same product X.
- Why are they wasting money in this way - I think - I won't buy it again soon!
Suddenly a crazy idea strikes me:
The company running the ads, is able in this way to tie the number of ads impressions to me and to my purchase.
In some *superficial* statistics, I will be a guy who has seen thousand of ads AND bought a product. The kind of superficial statistics you show to CEO's
I'm the proof that the marketing company is running ads very well and deserve a good share.
More useless ads they send me the better for the marketing company, as it will justify higher expenses.
I think I also helped implementing this system on some website, unconsciously.
It's just that I have a perverse mind, or did I find how to be rich?2 -
If Google hadn't kill Google Play Music, I don't think a single soul would voluntarily switch to it's YouTube Crap Music.
If you remember prior to 2011 the initial plan of Google was to take market away from Apple's iTunes. They initially shipped Amazon music with branded Android OS before the development of Play music.
As a long term user of Play music I'd say "killing the product" was a "bitch move"!
Because Play music is doing really great and you could tell from its reviews and moreover the destination product is quarterly-baked not even a viable replacement in the least sense.
There are more than a million and one problem with YouTube music, currently you would notice your playlist history gets clogged up with your videos when you visit the video web. It's more like the actual YouTube app hiding behind a curtain to mimick a music player. Which is so so stupid and annoying!
As a user all I want from a music player is to fucking listen to music not to watch fucking videos... which makes the app unnecessarily filled with stupid options you never really need.
I understand that monetisation is necessary but please show some fucking courtesy by doing shit with wisdom!14 -
If you guys remember, i was teasing from time to time, that i'm working on some Rust Project in my free time.
Well here it is, i put up a whole bunch of Editor Windows in it, to showcase it a little bit. (It also reminded me, that i need to update the Version to 2024.01).
It's essentially a toolkit, with which i can create all the content, that is later used as a data basis, that is being fed into the Client + Server Combo of the actual Game. My Plan for this year is to go beyond the Editor and create a first version of the Client + Server to be able to playtest the stuff.
And sorry if it kinda sounds like an ad, but i'm more posting it here to show, how nice it actually is to build stuff with rust.
Let me know what you think ^^11 -
Oh,I have learned a lot, I would not say from programming but from the career as a whole
Never get peer pressured
Always show empathy
If in a leading position, taking care of people is your top priority
Overconfidence will destroy a lot of good work
People by definition will always remember your mistakes
Never get over involved in the company you are working for, it's just a job
Your health is more than important
Nobody knows everything
Always be humble
There is a lot of bullshitters out there
Success is relative
Competition is high and there is always someone with better skill set, so you will suffer if you don't accept that -
Embarrassing screenshare story? Yeah, I've got couple of those.
- Showing one client a VSCode workspace of another client's. I was lucky they didn't escalate or anything.
- YouTube open in PIP mode and accidentally showing that to the higher-ups in company. What made it more embarrassing is that they informed me about it, I thought I was sharing a window not Entire screen.
- WhatsApp open in one window and I accidentally shared it on screen, thinking I wasn't sharing my screen, but I was, and everyone saw my texts with a girl I was "dating" at the time.
- Presenting my entire screen to a client and out of nowhere Epic Games pop up with a notification saying ""Your buddy sent you a message - Ready to start playing?". But that was 11pm so I got off easy.
- Opening sentry to show one thing to the client but they notice many new bugs and I got slammed by my boss for it.2 -
Callum, not everything is a "useless fad" just because you don't like it. I understand that you think AWS lambda functions are "just an expensive con for morons", but for our batch processing use case they really do make a lot of sense.
Running some numbers to show they cost 10x more for a completely unrelated always-on service with a completely different request pattern is either naive, stupid, or malicious, and considering you're meant to be a principle architect, I'm really not sure what's worse 🤦♂️2 -
I am gonna toot my own horn a little in here and say that the best mentorship experience I've had comes from me being the mentor.
I have trained interns at work, and they both said that I was able to teach them more than all their programming teachers combined. I was a TA at uni and got the same remarks and i help friends in their uni level courses at a local uni all the time. The remarks are always the same.
I like teaching. And don't know why some people hate it so much yet still decide to take in a paycheck. I want this industry to get better, I want my city to get better(because I loathe it) and I really get a good feeling from seeing other people succeed and be happy.
I really want to teach. Thinking about getting more years under my belt, earn a master's degree and then I would really want to teach professionally.
My biggest issue, here in the U.S education is ridiculously expensive. Teachers that don't give their best and yet make that paycheck are a disgrace to our industry. I want to show passion to others and if possible transfer a lil bit of it.
I just want to teach man. Already work at a school and I want to make that transition one of these days.3 -

be sad that you can't find your favorite Greek Food online.
offer your local Greek Restaurant that you do their web stuff.
make a nice modern website.
show it to the greek guy.
"Oh please look at this website, I like it more"
shows you a site build with tables, and menu-shortcuts only linked to pdf files.

I think, right now, it's bitting more than I can chew.
I get my hands on way too many projects because they're easy and then problems pile and I end up being behind schedule on everything.
That, and maybe sometimes subconsciously thinking I'm invincible. It's a direct psych response to those telling me I can't do shit, and then I do shit out of pure stubbornness, and then I have super-confidence for a short while. (Even if I don't show it)
I just don't think it's healthy. -
I think that the time to learn sub communication has come.
I just realized why I kept failing in the previous girls' tests. Besides of that I wasn't aware that I was being tested and kept wondering why they acted in a strange way.
Thinking about to create a "self-defense mechanism" in myself that whenever I feel that I am being tested atm I am going to block it by saying that this type tests fail on me or something like that.
I am done with tests. I hate them. If she is going to keep testing me, I will show her the red card and block her from my life.
I understand that it is in the nature of women to subconsciously test men and why they do that, but tbh they shouldn't be like "Why did he leave me?" when she keeps testing him and he can't do anymore tests.
Life is full of tests. Ain't gonna need more of that shit.5 -

Just read an article about a blind sofftware developer, who is proficient in way more technologies then me, for example.
He can use certain screen reader and code edor combo to read out the text, and also something called refreshable braille display.
This is so insiprational and only goes to show that there is no excuse whatsoever for a person NOT to learn software developing...1 -
We hired someone to make the new front site because I was too busy.
The guy had a plain text password system to show, mispronounced "FontAwesome", and used WordPress.
He was not an instructor but was supposed to be the "senior option" for when I couldn't do something for any reason.
I later asked him for some opinion on how to translate the site, and he disabled the Captcha plugin. I. Don't. Know. Why. I figured because of all the spam I got suspiciously after he "took a look" at the admin panel.
Luckily I could get him out of the contacts and now we are looking for more devs. -
WTF!? Is the internet is fake? What happened to the actual internet?
If you take any search phrase and search on Google or Bing you will get millions or billions or results. But if you go to the last page enough times it will drop down to a total of like 200 results. I am unsure on other search engines as they make it difficult to jump ahead in the search (only provide "next page"). I was going to the next page of results in Brave search engine and it came up with a "are you human" test. Like nobody is going to search more than a few pages. This definitely makes me feel like in am in the Truman Show.
What is the point of limiting to only a few hundred pages? Why show millions or billions for initial search? Are there any real search engines that don't filter so much? Did the technocrats burn the second great library already?8 -
Brazilian health ministry got a ransomware attack this night.
Why? Not because every city is demanding you to show you're vaccinated in order to go somewhere. Because you have to show it using a 20+ year old system.
Don't get me wrong the UI is nice.
But the servers...
Well, at least I have a document where my shots are registered.
And good luck to us living in this country, where we're known for gorgeous cities (people too) but also for a government that earns 200k+ while working 2 days a week and can employee 40+ people for sitting there and do no fucking shit.
No wonder if you get bad news from here every now and then, it's all true.
The ministries are dumb.
The president is dumb.
And worst. People too.
People don't care. Because they don't know they are part of 94% of more than 200 MILLION that earns minimum wage and strive to live bc the country BUYS things that we ALREADY PRODUCE and have to put a tax to every product to compensate them paying 5x times more to buy in dollars.
Well,
At least I'm not depending on this sucker of government, never cared about it.
You guys deserve to collapse and become poor again6 -
Remember, the more "cutting edge" and "thousands of clients" a company has is inversely related to the quality of documentation they have on their APIs and software solutions.
I don't give a fuck about your pretty examples, show me which FIELDS can take which VALUES. It's that simple. Instead, I'm wasting your company's and my own time by spamming support for what should be basic questions clearly outlined in the documentation.2 -
what is the point of having massive HR departments if something as expected and frequent as university hiring can't go smoothly?
i managed to reach the interview round for a big 4 firm only for the interviewer to not show up for 4 hours from my time slot (i waited the entire time - took periodic screenshots for proof), HR to say "we'll reschedule your interview, this happened because of internal miscommunication" more than THREE months ago, and dip. until december they'd repeat the same. now they've ghosted. thanks, virtual hiring.
how is it the candidate's fault? found out this isn't rare by speaking to a few others from my network who i knew were interviewing for the same firm. for students whose lives can change completely based on the outcome of an opportunity that they came across due to sheer luck and could definitely make use of because of their hard work - this is so heartbreaking and demotivating.1 -
When you show the client the comprehensive administration system they ordered but their young female HR leader is "more into pictures than tables".
-
Hey just noticed the app updated... Looks like a pretty big change but pretty nice. one thing though was wondering. How does it decide the length to show?
I see some posts are really long but others are shorter and get the Read More cutoff15 -
Just spent 4 hours working on a somewhat complex restructuring of my current project that, when boiled down totals about 50 new or modified lines.
While I realize that line count != productivity, all the testing and reworking over that period has me feeling like there should be more to show for it.
But then, there's the fact that it's working properly as it's supposed to now, so I guess it's a win in the end.1 -
Mind blow of the week: JavaScript has no "else if".
It's always two tokens. Not one. It's NOT like python's "elif".
It's ALWAYS chaining an additional and DISTINCT if statement in the else clause of the first. It is NOT creating multiple comparison paths in the same if statement as it would seem.
For example:
if(a) console.log(a);
else if(b) console.log(b);
else console.log(c);
Simply needs more proper indentation to show which "if" the "else" actually belongs to:
if(a) console.log(a);
else
if(b) console.log(b);
else console.log (c);9 -
People around me and clients are increasingly saying i am a genius, because i show them an app i made in react-native or some crappy site i set up in a week as POC.
While im quite noobish still, i barely read publications out of interests, and most of the time i just put in async/await somewhere just to see if it makes the promise work or not, because i dont understand promises fully, and I think in general i just accomplished very little in the 5 years I have been programming
It is really putting pressure on my impostor syndrome, even more when i talk with my peers who can tell who was the driving force behind ES6 :/9 -
I would really like to know why Google decided that it will only show me video ads for one specific brand of cereals and freaking feminine hygiene products. I have a freaking google home and a chromecast, there is more than enough info for them to know that I am NOT a woman. I never searched for feminine higiene products nor talked about them. Like wtf Google.16

How come something works absolutely perfectly in dev but not in prod?
I was making a desktop app in election js and everything is working perfectly. No problem at all. But then I create the installer/distributable and nothing shows on the screen. And out of curiosity, I wanted to see the error log and it shows an unknown error, I didn't even know from what thing the error is being generated. And after I fixed that, another problem came with Asana Api. I mean, if it's a public API, why do you have to block it with cors? I hate cors!
And after all of it, there's more to it. I mean, why can't you just show the errors in dev?4 -
HOLY SHIT. short story, just dodged a bullet. Using the Samuel L Ipsum generator and not thinking. I then use this copy to test the notification system with the following text. luckily the system email only went to me!
"Look, just because I don't be givin' no man a foot massage don't make it right for Marsellus to throw Antwone into a glass motherfuckin' house, fuckin' up the way the nigger talks. Motherfucker do that shit to me, he better paralyze my ass, 'cause I'll kill the motherfucker, know what I'm sayin'?
Well, the way they make shows is, they make one show. That show's called a pilot. Then they show that show to the people who make shows, and on the strength of that one show they decide if they're going to make more shows. Some pilots get picked and become television programs. Some don't, become nothing. She starred in one of the ones that became nothing."1 -
Ffs, HOW!?!? Fuck! I need to get this rotten bs out.
RDS at its max capabilities from the top shelf, works OK until you scale it down and back up again. Code is the same, data is the same, load is the same, even the kitchen sink is the same, ffs, EVERYTHING is the same! Except the aws-managed db is torn down and created anew. From the SAME snapshots! But the db decides to stop performing - io tpt is shit, concurrency goes through the roof.
Re-scale it a few more times and the performance gets back to normal.
And aws folks are no better. Girish comes - says we have to optimize our queries. Rajesh comes - we are hitting the iops limit. Ankur comes - you're out of cpu. Vinod thinks it's gotta be the application to blame.
Come on guys, you are a complete waste of time for a premium fucking support!
Not to mention that 2 enhanced monitoring graphs show anythung but the read throughput.
Ffs, Amazon, even my 12yo netbook is more predictable than your enterprise paas! And that support..... BS!
We're now down to troubleshooting aws perf issues rather than our client's.... -
Email from a department mgr regarding a sharepoint site we inherited (lots of custom javascript, XLS, etc, stuff we didn't write)
Dan: "The department filter isn't showing up when I select the 'Logistics and Support' department. Was this caused by the changes you guys made? Its causing a major disruption in our processes and need it fixed ASAP."
Me: "Those changes went out almost two months ago and all the filters were working fine, at least that is what you told me when you tested it."
Dan: "I thought so, but its not working. It has probably been broken ever since you made those changes so I filed a corrective action ticket against your department for not following the documented deployment and testing processes"
Me: "Really? We've been over this. Its your department that is responsible for that sharepoint site. Previous developers hacked javacript together to make it all work, but I'm sure its something simple."
Dan: "Great. I'll start putting together a root-cause analysis to determine which of your processes we need to address."
Start looking at the javascript and found the issue..
if (dept === "Logistics & Support") {
$('deptFilter').show();
}
else {
$('deptFilter').hide();
}
Me: 'Found the issue. Did you rename the logistics department?'
Dan: 'No'
Me: 'To show or hide the filter, the code was looking for "Logistics & Support", someone changed the title to "Logistics and Support"'
Dan: "Well...I guess I did that yesterday...but I didn't change the name, just that stupid character. That shouldn't make any difference."
Me: "I can fix that right now. Are you going to need more information for your root cause analysis?"
Dan: "No, I think we're good. Thanks."1 -
So my boss sends a mail to all my colleagues letting them know I will work there this summer aswell. In this mail he says i have experience of easier programming... Fuck, I want to report a bug to KDE, but the more I think of it the more it looks like it's someone who implemented the shit.
It's a feature!
For some fucking reason KDE launcher overrides the commands from one of my programs with its shortcut entries. That's mostly OK.
Now, the problem is that if for some reason the shortcut goes broken, KDE makea sure it is stores in some sort of database, so that even if you delete it from the disk you will still have a broken link overriding the real command.
Until here it's OK. The thing is that, if you delete the shortcut , you will be prompted with a message showing its contents, asking if is it secure to launch the corresponding shortcut?
I'm like, what? Man I deleted the file, there's no shortcut anymore, just let it go and show me the original command.
why would I want you to store previously deleted shortcuts so you may make sure I launch my programs through them?
PS: forgot to tell the whole problem started from a bug in another program, which for some nonsensical reason creates shortcuts calling system commands through itself rather than just calling them out. The result is that once this program is removed all the shortcuts it created no longer work. -
Freelance developers, how do you get clients?
I am developing apps/websites with a friend and so far er have found our clients mainly on project-listing sites (sites like freelancer.com). My experience is though, that it always becomes a price-race, and with many projects only being small static websites, it just doesn't seem that this is the way to Go.
So if any of you have suggestions on how and where to find larger/more serious clients that will be much appreciated - it should be said that we already have quite a few projects to show in our portfolio, so I think we are ready to take on some larger projects6 -
HOD keeps coaching me in regards to my new role as a manager for my institution. I really like it, the man has a lot of knowledge and would show me stuff that not only deals with my job, but his as well. Thus far everything has been working rather smoothly, mind you, i have been acting manager for more than 6 months thus far, but they just made it official after our vp conaidered that most of the applicants for the manager role were not as qualified as I was, kinda had the advantage since I wrote the job requirements.
All in all it has been fun, stressing, but fun. -
- Ok so today you're going to install MS SQL Server 2014, import this database, and make it show up through a crossed dynamic table.

1 problem down, 3 more show up.
I love SQL.
In other news, client won't send data to utilize, so I must fill in dummy data.
How's your day? -
Recruiters or their bosses with sick ambitions and zero feedback.
Do I need to say more?
Spent few days to make my site looking good on desktop/mobile with few screenshots and even video to show my working projects in production. Even more few days to make really detailed 2 A4 CV with my previous job and what I was doing there. All generated from markdown.
I even saved money around half a year to go and live month in other country (Ireland, Dublin) and then on site send about 150 applications on various sites, emails, linkedout and local IT meetings.
Null, nada, nil, NaN accepted applications.
Is it some kind of joke? All companies almost cries for new workers and they don't even answer someone which founded and have no problem with growing own IT company for almost 5 years with self learnt, practically applied in production linux, HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, Go, bash, KVM and Openvz virtualization knowledge?
What they really want?

Must be great to be a giant fucking dumbass company raking in more than enough money, that you can't add 40-50 more characters on why your API doesn't like our call.
"Here's an API call with 3 different ways to make a call, we will show you an example for only the easiest method, AND if you get the more complex ways wrong, we'll just respond with an error code 422 with the error message "validation failed".

I have to finish team project within 13 weeks. Since most of my team mates are quite new to programming, I took first steps along with leader to make tasks as simple as possible for them. 2 weeks into the project and one of the members complains that she doesn't understand her task. So both me and leader tried to explain task to her. I guess we couldn't make it simpler. However she insisted that she will have to see our teacher. Ok, why not? So we are waiting for her magnificence to show so she can be officially dropped from the team and give her place to someone more competent.
WHY SHE EXPECT TO DO HER PART (OF LITERALLY CONSTRUCTING ONE FUCKING CLASS) FOR HER. AND SHE CALLS HERSELF A DEVELOPER!
Well, at least I did my part today to make a world better place :)
What about your experiences with working in teams? -
Every day I try to show something new or cool to the people in my team. Not with the purpose of using it, more like to show them the current state of options and cool things to study. Yesterday it was clojure and clojurescript as well as regent. Which even tho I am not a master or even proficient at either....well I just wanted to show them. Lisp is very whiteboard friendly, so after I finished writing shit on the board this was the lead developer's reaction:
Lol this is fun.2 -
I've been watching that "Mr Robot" lately, and its warped my sensibilities. Now, whenever I see something ridiculous, like "I've got the hard drive here" (holds up PSU), I'm irrationally angry and won't watch the rest of the show. I wish more producers would spend the time to build that sort of realism4

I was browsing websites in search of a nice digital camera because my wife saw one but it's long since been discontinued. So I found this one article about a few current ones. I open it, it shows the typical GDPR consent request about cookies with a prominent button 'ACCEPT ALL,' and a less prominent button 'MANAGE PREFERENCES.'
But tapping the button 'MANAGE PREFERENCES' did not show any preferences to manage! WHAT THE HECK? There was only a list of 'partners' whose cookies I need to accept. A long list. A very long list. I stopped counting at 500.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? WHAT REASON COULD A WEBSITE POSSIBLY HAVE TO REQUIRE COOKIE CONSENT FOR MORE THAN 500 PARTNERS?
Fucking capitalist internet.4 -
I see ads on marketing tools every fucking where.
Do I look stupid to you, Facebook and Google?
I don't fucking need them.
Who needs those stupid products anyway?
I even saw a reskinned XAMPP being marketed as 'local testing for your WordPress website', like what the actual fuck? Isn't that fucking scamming?
Oh, right. They were targeting WordPress monkies. Oh.
Anyway, please show me some more keyboards instead.
I've been in keyboard market for like 2 weeks you know.
Holy fuck. -
Me - "Talks to client about his deliverable"
Him - So when can we show a demo?
Me - On thursday we could show a totally working deliverable.
Him - "Really on thursday? i was hoping to get it done for tomorrow"
My mind - *Dude. do you even know how much time does it takes to finish the latest changes you just asked me today? i mean probably we could get it done if you weren't so cheap at the proposal, you know, when I told you we would take longer if i dropped the price. And I could have a couple more devs working here so we could had the finish product a week ago, and still we are on time... so WTH dude *
Me - No, sorry I wouldn't dare to show you a half baked demo. But ill try my best to show you before that day.1 -
I write web apps that show system health information, for support purposes. Whenever I talk to my boss about the general direction of what I'm writing he says, "I want one page that shows me everything."
This is an enormous company, with tens of millions of customers, and an infrastructure so big that there are literally millions of potential points of failure.
I hear this from management softs all the time: one page that shows me EVERYTHING. To me, that means he wants a red or green indicator that he can quickly check on his iphone while he's skiing.
I'm afraid that managing this kind of infrastructure is a bit more complicated than that. If it was that simple, you wouldn't have anyone to manage.1 -
Best dev experience was coding one of my favorite board games. I started it early on in 2016, and while it isn't completely do finished (AI needs work and tweaks to the UI), it is functional for hot seat play.
I started doing it because I wanted to make a game and learn some things I didn't know, specifically I was interested in making AIs with different strategies. While I set out to learn this, I've learned so much more along the way.
I'm still really happy when I get to work on it, and having something to show people (that they can actually play!) is a great feeling. -
yes, you absolute fucking asshat, i would like to do more than JUST LOG FUCKING PALETTE TO THE FUCKING CONSOLE
ANY METHODS EXPOSED BY THIS? ANY OTHER OPTIONS? OR YOU JUST GONNA SHOW THAT YOU CAN LOG OUT THIS OBJECT
https://github.com/Vibrant-Colors/...
retarded documentation will be the end of us all i swear to fucking god (or at least me)
though reap what you sow, js devs just as retarded as the language i conceed
i've never seen such a large README and learned so little of what the fuck is going on or how to actually use any of the options1 -
I love learning by doing.
Building MVPs and prototypes is the best way. Even better if you have a chance to show and share them in front of an audience (peer pressure can be good!).
Share the lessons you've learned and what you've done wrong, it will help many more people than just yourself.
I've been working for an eLearning company for the last 4 years (CloudAcademy.com) and I'm in love with the idea of learning something new every day. And not just coding. Code is "only" a tool to solve problems, and learning something about those problems and fields will make you a better developer. -
I get the opportunity to talk with a pro today:
"Pro": hey do you know how to use tool X?
Me: well I've used it sometimes for simple stuff but I've always wanted to learn more advanced stuff.
"Pro": let me show you
*repeats the basics that are available in every single online tutorial and are tbh pretty obvious*
Me: yeah I know that but how do you use function A with option B under circumstance C? (Because I've encountered that recently)
"Pro": Oh... emm... I don't know. I don't think you'll ever need that use case tho3 -
Worst: I guess not having actual income for more than half a year (finding a job is so hard) not really the end of the world since having a job i made so little progress on the game and had tp sacrifice a lot of sleep due to getting up early and getting home late
Best: Progress on the VR game, it's coming along well and it could be my income for next year (I really really hope so) otherwise it'll be a good show piece for when i apply for jobs, if i make a demo i'll post stuff on here (just realise it will be VR only) -
Tbh this is more about education in general... Introduce the same system i had, no fixed lessons just a project and a time frame. Eg : create your own MVC framework and a site to show it off
Time frame : 5 weeks
(dont expect fully fletched frameworks but a site that uses the MVC data flow and the code is reusable)3 -
>Be me, humble physicist turned quantitative developer
>Big physics nerd, but code for the cash
>Working on some quantitative finance software, all about risk measures
>Girl comes over one day, cute as a quark
>Think to myself, "This is it, time to make a move"
>Instead, brain decides it's time to explain my work
>Start rambling about refactoring, polymorphism, and data encapsulation
>She's looking at me like I've started speaking in binary
>She tries to steer the conversation back to normal stuff, but I'm stuck in a recursion loop
>Keep going on about my project, can't seem to stop myself
>She tries to stay longer, even tries to show interest in my work
>But the more I talk about algorithms and time complexity, the more her eyes glaze over
>Eventually, she gives up, says she has to leave
>She leaves, probably thinks I'm more interested in my code than her
>mfw I realize I've chosen code over companionship

Did you every have nothing to do on a regular basis?
I am really trying to show initiative and find the work but due to company focus shift my position I was hired for 4 months ago has become completely redundant. I am asking my senior dev and other (not even my project) for tasks but more frequently there are days where I finish anything they could come up with in 1-2h. I have found a side hustle I am doing in the meantime, I am learning other dev related things and my personal website gets a new style. What I though would be a dream feels terrible. I feel underappreciated and useless and I start to dread each workday. Sometimes I feel except for my team of 3 they dont even know I exist and earn good money. I am often forgotten on company events, meetings and my projects are being put in the freezer. I also hate the cringe company I am working for but I dont know if its already time to give up.
Did you ever have nothing to do at your job for more than a couple of days?9 -
The more I show up to the office to tackle impossible client demands, the more I realize that I am living in the world of The Expert.

Average software isn't even average.
I can not count the number of times I am faced with a consumer facing software such as fastfood terminals, atms, phones or even OS's that simply are broken. I am so sick of looking around like there is something wrong with me, when its the fucking code that simply offers me broken options. My favorite is the McDonalds ordering platform that simply offers one option once you select your first item: + THATS it a fucking + sign is my only option. What if I only want one fucking thing!!!
No I have to stumble around, looking ignorant until I finally just press the add more + sign. WHALLA
I can then select complete order - stupid programmers show me we all should write our own code that way we live or die by its quality.
Someone once told me, be glad software is so poorly written on average, otherwise we would all be a slave to big brother by now.7 -
Just noticed I haven't been here for quite some time. Missed you, you fucks <3
Also noticed notifs don't work for me no more.
Do dR notifs not show for anybody else?7 -
is soo cool when people is up to joke around with my bad jokes.
-- Talking with a coworker about a new button in a results table --
dude: hey jhon, I'll name the button 'SHOW RESULTS' and the endpoint will be named that too. cuz there is a 'SHOW STATS' already
me: dunno, use something more meaningful, this is about unparsed results, right? so what about...
me: unparsed results ? unparsed stats ?
me: another one bites the dust? show must go on?
me: innuendo?
me: pick one 8D . But I think innuendo is pretty descriptive
dude: ok
me: seriously, 'show unparsed stats'
dude: got it
-- then the dude sends me the screenshot --
me: LOL, 8D
me: you got my respect man (_ _) -
I wanted to update my previous rant in the comment but what happened is such a fucking nonsense I think it deserves its own.
For those who don't want to look what it is, just another C++ noob (aka me) complaining about how the language was a bitch to him by throwing a random SEGFAULT on release while it didn't show up on debug. Welp.
Half an hour and a ton of std::cout later (thought I would try to read a disassembly ? Think again) I figured out what was the problematic section of code. And guess what ? It was a section I didn't even modify and I never had problems with. Something completely unrelated to what I was rightly imagining causing the issue.
To identify which exact subsection was throwing the error to my face I added more tag code.
Rubbing my hands and ready to fix the fuck out of this damn shit, I built it, launched it…
And all of a sudden the code worked.
All I did. Was to add more cout to know which line fucked up. And now it works.
So. Serious question now: is it a clear sign from heaven I should stop working with such languages and should go back in my shitty high level languages kindergarten ?10 -
My home office, I have my own room for it, when I wanna take a break I can go and make meself some nice coffee. I can also have the TV on playing something for background noise, it helps me more than music for whatever reason. Mainly the office (which according to me I have seen that show about 40 times already)
This is why I really enjoyed the pandemic, but I realize that saying such things sound harsh.
The best fucking part of it? I get to use my own fucking clean restroom. I fucking hate public restrooms or having to share them with strangers because for whatever reason it seems that most people around the world do not have general etiquette when using restrooms.
I have seen some shit that has left me so fucking confused it ain't even funny. Second best part: no fucking commute.5 -

I think that more than learning about CS, I learned how to cope with enormous amounts of frustration that comes with being a dev and I also felt great when I was being challenged with actual deadlines through exams, hackathons, assignments, practicals and tough professors.
Professionally, I think the great knowledge of fundamentals of CS helps a lot and it is just a great way to get your foot inside the door (for internship interviews and career opportunities) of a company and then show what you're made of when it comes to being a dev.
Also, I had the time of my life because I was around like-minded people who loved the same things and it was good to watch them suffer at first and then, watch them succeed at something that I was about to do. -
I really hate it when people ignore the messages I sent on slack
I don't mention you or the damn @channel for show
There is some shit that needs to get done, and I even hate it more when they ask me for something I already said on slack
Whaaaaat, you can't read now -
I really need to go back to school and brush up on the basics this summer. The problem with being self-taught is that you have glaring big gaps in just that, the basics, and as the projects get more complicated it really starts to show.
Sure I get The Thing done but... I'd die if anyone saw the code behind it.2 -
I decided to run the ROCKYOU password list to see if there are any patterns in md5 hashing, not sure why but I am starting to confuse myself and I need a new pair of eyes to have a look.
in advance, sorry for the shitty image, that lappy is a temporary solution.
So the very accurate and not bias numbers show that the letter "0" appears more than the rest, would there be any use in let's say ordering the wordlist with words that have the most "0" and "7" in their hash to appear at the top?
I believe I might be trying to stretch the numbers and see a pattern where there is none but its worth a shot I think.
Note:
- These numbers come from only about ~14m words
My thinking trail is that if statisticaly these hashes are more likely to appear, they are more likely to be the one I am looking for?3 -
Last week i had a talk with my boss. Actually he more had a talk with me. Why i wasn’t able to finish my work the sprint before. I told him i had to run not one, but two project at the same time and on top of that had to show a new coworker around.
Some how i keep thinking about quitting this shit.1 -

Almost everyone nowadays uses a PC, Laptop, Smartphone but sadly not even 60% of the total potential of the hardware is being used.
.
And no - you don't require custom cooling to use the whole 100% of the total potential, stock cooling is more than enough.
.
IRL "programmers" these days don't do any fscking effort to optimise their code and give it all up as some kinda shitty "hot patch" - code of their looks disturbing with no security features + optimisation. (wAnBlOwS products remain an example)
.
Even when you're using python you can push your project to limits. Instead of shoving face-size ASCII banners why don't chaps stress test their projects? Oh I forgot the community runs on show-offs and CVs ...
.
Note to Self : Optimisation is the key to integrate Technology with Nature.2 -
When you explain thoroughly and in no uncertain terms that yes you can help your mate out at short notice by building a working prototype of his app, but that it won't even be MVP. It will be bare bones functionality with no design, almost no styling, no images, no color - but it will work in so much that it will do what it needs to do to show that it's possible.
Then he sees it and goes "it doesn't look great, can it not animate or at least have nice images and a color palette. Would it be possible to have filters on the search or I dunno, just make it look a bit more finished?"
Me: nope, but if you want I can delete the whole thing?5 -
Next week is super-efficient-daily-standup-and-monday-status-bonanza-meeting week!
The most effecient way is NOT to attend.
If you have no questions/impediments/whatever and you feel like you have velocity > whatever. Be a no-show!
I am SURE you know what is expected from you!
Hey, younglings! Some meetings are _not_ compulsary. No need to be there if you know the drill. If you are in a good work place, everyone will get it. You’re working. This is not always understood by juniors.
But, communicate what your intentions are! Don’t be quite. Communication are difficult. More is better than nothing! Just right is very difficult to obtain and will never be mastered.
And, Windows 11 really sucks… -
Apache why???
Your projects' page let's me view all the projects sorted by category, language, etc.
https://projects.apache.org/project...
But I can't view a description... I have to open the link...
Starts writing a scraper and realizes the project list is not static, it's loaded from a JSON document using JS... The document has all the descriptions and other info...
WHY THE FUCK DO YOU NOT SHOW THIS ON THE PAGE BUT MAKE EVERYONE OPEN ANOTHER PAGE SEE THEM...
Spends an hour writing an app in C# to parse the json because a simple Flattener isn't good enough because of the structure...
Probably going to end up creating a GUI so I can browse it more easily and Star the ones I may be interested in...3 -
So, might be the first time ever but I have a reasonable client. Oh wait, life isn't that nice!
Boss, stop picking fights over stupid shit with the client!
Boss, actually show up to meetings you called!
Boss, do you want to get us fired from the contract?
Boss, stop threatening the client! They hold all the chips here!
Boss, actually listen to my technical advice since you are not technical!
Boss, go die in a hole!
Boss, I want your job and paycheck you do nothing!
Boss, don't tell me you are tired and we can talk tomorrow when you kept me up until 3am the previous night then called an 8am meeting!
Boss, give everybody, including the client, more than 2 hours notice for a meeting, then get pissed when the client doesnt show. They have other meetings!1 -
The 'hamburger menu' is now like, and industry standard for basic UX everywhere.
Am I the only one who feels that it in its entirety, sucks?
the way iPhone implements its commands on the bottom or the way windows used to (before it gave in to hamburgers in UWP) implement charms was a way more efficient and elegant way to show commands..
I cant think of a better way without sacrificing screen space, but this for sure isn't the best way to handle commands.6 -
Hello.
I am a student of Computer Science Engineering (Bachelor of Technology). I am 3 years into this 4-year course. I am strong in Data structures and Algorithms, and passionate to add more stuff to this list.
I am really done with this University coursework, and want to explore more (specifically, want to do something that is practical, and matters). I, obviously cannot leave the Uni, but I want to make my time at home more productive. Not just to me, but everyone.
But:
1. I don't know where to start.
2. I teach myself everything, and hence, there is much difference between what I know and what people need, and I'm kind of scared of ruining/wasting other's time.
If there is someone out here who has the time out of his/her busy schedule to guide and set me on a path, please do help me. It's getting weird in my head.
Languages I know: C(took a 1-year course), Python, JavaScript [learning JAVA], Oracle, Visual Basic
Things I have done before:
* Developed a fullstack website for Indian Railways (going live in May 2019) [used Python for back end]
I have a sincere need from within to do this, and I am going to learn whatever more I need to, in order to fulfill your requirements. Please just show me WHAT and from WHERE.
Kindly do get back.3 -
Most of the mockery and derisive talk at lunch was directed towards: middle management. - even if they were present at the table.
I too, have struggles with our PO: he was developer but is totally out of our development, what he kinda accepts and lets us do our stuff... BUT from time to time he wants to meddle with our architecture even though he is not even capable of writing more than a sentence into our ticket description, and his only "vision" is the KISS principle. Totally triggers me.
On the other hand I am also part time working as a scrum master and thus get to know the shit show from the other side: sitting between all parties with their particular, contradicting interests - all that shitty "politics" you don't have have to care about if you just code.2 -
Meh. FFS. Thats how this shit starts.
Get a call to say 2018 Bank Holidays not showing on legacy web calendar.
/me looks for bank holiday code in PHP file ..... no dice.
/me finds a dBase table that holds all Bank Holiday info. Not ideal, but I can work with that.
Enter all Bank Holidaya into dBase. Sit back, relax, wait for page to reload to show me Banks .... no dice.
Huh??
Read code more closely ......
Included file (inline, half way through PROCEDURAL FILE FFS) and notice that the linked file has all Banks hand formatted into Calendar events, and minified.
If I ever meet the old dev in the street, so help me god. 🤬2 -
Come to a weekly deep learning meet up this morning 8.30AM. The event start at 10 AM. While waiting I read news and play some game. As time near 10 o'clock I had strange feeling: The guest room so quiet, just me and 2 security guy.
Okay I think comittee that run this event a bit late because of traffc jam and I wait more. In the end the committee didn’t even show until 10.30AM. Later I found on another data science group today's event is postponed and I go home.
WHY DIDNT YOU GUYS MAKE ANNOUNCEMENT ON SLACK? YOU WASTE MY TIME WAITING 2 HOURS2 -
I've got a decent developer job with decent people. It pays well enough. I work from home. There's a lot to be grateful for, and I am grateful. That being said...
I work for a consulting company with Agile in the name. It's the sort where they hire you and tell you that you'll work with an Agile team on exciting stuff and that they want to make sure you're learning and doing what interests you.
The reality is starting yet another engagement which is really just staff augmentation, joining another organization that's made a mess of what they're building. It works, but the code is all over the place. They've got tons of defects and work is slowing.
The idea is always that if we show them what great work we can do they'll let us do more. That sounds like an okay plan for the company but not so much for me.
My motivation is drained. I'm not going to fix your machine. I'm just going to become part of it. Show me what you want me to work on and I'll write the code. Then I'll spend several days trying to get a local environment to work so I can test what I did through the UI because you don't have enough tests. I'll spend more time debugging the environment than anything else. I won't really know if it works and it doesn't matter because without tests the next change someone commits will break it anyway. The next person can't manually test every scenario any more than I can.
While I'm doing this, someone somewhere is building the next application that I'll work on after they're done screwing it up.
If you're about to start building some new application, pretend it's done but it doesn't work very well, it's slow, it's buggy, and every new feature you want takes months. Pretend that you need to hire someone to fix it for you. And then hire them to build it for you in the first place.
I thought I found a place where I could work for 5-10 years. Maybe I have. Maybe when I explain (in the most positive way possible - this isn't how I normally talk) how utterly depressing this is they'll put me on something else.
Once I'm out of this depression I'll go back to trying to make this better for myself and everyone else. We can do better. It doesn't have to suck like this.4 -
Thanks I hate it, I hate the fact that typescript will still transpile this. Not an exact copy of the code I'm working with, but close enough. Also this code targets es3, but we generate tsconfigs that say es5 (which don't actually get used) which leads me to believe that we generate them soley for the benefit of ides, and because if they said es3 the ide would show even more errors7

Zoom free tier calls end after 40 minutes.
Idea: pwyw conference software where the call ends after 40 minutes if the host isn't paying €5 more monthly than everyone else in the call. There is no way to discover whether this is a limited call until the 40 minute mark, and there's no way to discover who outbid the host at all except by getting everyone to show their bank statement.1 -
Anytime I've needed to show my bosses and coworkers something more than once, and they still ask... Those are the dumbest tech questions.

Got branches:
+ More organised
+ Easier to work on lots of features
+ Easier to collaborate
- Commits don’t show in github contributions
Result: no branches1 -
Twitter comments are shit
How the fuck to use them? Why don't they just show one under another? If post has more than 2 replies it can be clicked to open its direct replies, some of them are shown in main thread, some of them are shown under opened thread. Some replies from main thread are shown under child thread. And to make it even worse any comment of sub thread can be expanded as well showing some random replies that could be expanded recursievly so you may end in main thread again. It is just impossible to read all replies in chonological order. Show me the moron who made this, I wanna kill him....1 -

Talking about stupidity, my friend on whatsapp even share his bank online transaction on his stories, I told him to be careful with those sensitive information, but he's ignoring it.
I think he more care to show off his "bulge-wallet" than protect his own money.
Find anything stupid than that?9 -
I haven't coded a new project in a long time. I want to build something, show it to the world and hope people use it. I love webapps as I'm pretty experienced in this, and have a huge interest for smart homes, internet of things, twilio, innovative payments and more. What could my MVP be?11
-
I really dont understand how if I show someone my website or give them the link they're like What is it? and i just want to say
"I wonder... IF ONLY THERE WAS A FUCKING PARAGRAPH ON THE FRONT PAGE AS YOU OPEN THE SITE THAT TELLS YOU WHAT IT IS, oh you still dont understand? THEN FUCKING SCROLL THE FUCK DOWN AND READ THE REST!"
It seems like every time I show someone it IRL, this is exactly what happens, it's like they've never used the internet and never had to scroll down for more content.2 -
When you have a weekly Skype call with the client, but the client doesn't show up... 😡
I guess they are still in holiday since it's the first week of the year... But one COULD send a mail before christmas about not being there in the first week.
Now I'm waiting 10 more minutes in the skype call to make sure they aren't just late.1 -
As a developer I never understood the intended benefit of standups. Issues + a scrum/kanban board like trello or GitHub project + a chat for quick questions or to schedule an ad-hoc pair programming session should be enough to make everyone know everything they need to know about the project status at any time.
Obliging developers to talk in a group session to reiterate in a more verbose way what they already wrote down when working on it, will make a lot of people uncomfortable. Talking too much or not complying to the talking rules is an expected side effect besides anxiety and reduced productivity.
If you want a talk show, hire talk masters.
If you want software development, hire software developers.
Don't confuse one with the other!10 -
I was in a okay mood. Then i drank. I had fun skyping with some people (dont judge, it was their choice). Now im drunk, alone and getting more and more depressed.
Im honestly considering going to McDonalds and give away a few rubber ducks and show some card tricks, maybe ill get some friends. Or haters.
Conclusion: I hate when i get drunk. When im sober, i cant wait to get drunk. This isnt even a conclusion, i have no idea what im doing.12 -
Programming Lesson #7
TLDR: Beating deadlines is difficult
Long version:
There is no easy way to give an estimation or deadline for a particular development task. Sometimes it takes a lot less or often a lot more time to finish a task than estimated deadlines and that's totally fine. Just make sure you have a manager/senior mentor who is well aware of this fact and doesn't scrutinize you regularly for missing deadlines.
I am going to make sure that when I get into a senior management position, I would show understanding and empathy towards my juniors similar to how my seniors show to me currently when I miss deadlines.4 -
For fuck, fucking sake I literally spent 10 hours trying to setup Celery logging with Django but no, ohhh no Celery has some ninja handlers that don't even show up in logging_tree. If I try to change date format for Celery then I get big "fuck off" in my face. One more hour and I will explode.1

Summary of My Experience With Recruiters
1. They do everything until they get a phone talk. They also go cold turkey if they don’t have what you want, no politeness if you are not useful to them.
2. They are OK with your highball salary range at first
3. Once they got that you are hireable, they show their true nature
3a. Trying to lower my forever salary expectation to guarantee an offer and their one time bonus
3b. They scare you implying I would be fired from job anyways, if I don’t like some aspects of the current job
3c. They call you multiple times a week with no scheduling beforehand
3d. They lecture me on why salary shouldn’t be a big reason for job change(bitch don’t even…)
3e. They say shit like I want you to get this job(dude, you say that to every job seeker)
I will add more if I remember. What are your other bad experiences4 -
I got in contact with a teacher I had at school many years ago and went to meet him, just generally chatting. He had a job offer to teach some children coding for a week at local library but he didn't have the time to do it alone. A few weeks later and I was the primary tutioner for the course with a bit help from said teacher.
I also had some experience with electronics which I incorporated, blowing some components up, show them Arduino's etc. And I can say most of the children seemed really interested and hopefully a few continued after the course.
Either way, I got a really good reference from the library and got a couple more job offers from both them and some other libraries. Finally got a use for the company I registered in 2014. -
The more I look back on it, the more I really see that this job has really thrown me to the wolves time and time again, only to laugh as I come back beaten and bruised.
They’ve given me objectives that were deceptively broad, no guidance, and then misguidance when I came back with a well researched opinion. They wanted me to estimate large projects without having worked on a large project. Plus, college leaves out the huge part of software work: deployment. I had to figure all that out on my own too.
The more I look back on it the more I see this place has been a complete shit show from the beginning. It was just the first job I didn’t have to do manual labor at so I valued it highly.
It’s time to move on to somewhere I’m not the constant scapegoat. -

Okay, sure. This may happen to indie stuff etc.
But we are talking about bigass company thats fucking trying to assasinate steam (and so far kindda fails). Let me rant! I don’t usually do this but this is just frustrating and draining. Please tell me if im wrong. We have authentication that needs to be refactored. I was assigned on this issue. Im a junior btw. I also attached an image of my proposals. The issue of the old way of our signup process is that when validation fails they will keep on accepting the TaC (terms and conditions) and on our create method we have the validation and creating the user. Basically if User.create(user_params) create else throw invalid end. (Imma take a photo later and show it you)which needs to be refactored. So I created a proposal 1. On my first proposal I could create a middleware to check if the body is correct or valid if its valid show the TaCs and if they accept thats the moment the user is created. There is also additional delete user because DoE told me that we dont need middlewares we have before and after hooks! (I wanted to puke here clearly he doesn’t understand the request and response cycle and separation of concerns) anyway, so if middleware is not accepted then i have to delete the user if they dont accept the TaCs. Proposal 2. If they dont want me to touch the create method i could just show the TaCs and if they dont accept then redirect if they do then show form and do the sign process.
This whats weird (weird because he has a lot of experience and has master or phd) he proposes to create a method called validate (this method is in the same controller as the create, i think hes thinking about hooks) call it first and if it fails then response with error and dont save user, heres the a weird part again he wants me to manually check on each entity. Like User.find_by_email(bs@g.com) something like that and on my mind wtf. Isnt it the same as User.create(user_params) because this will return false if paras are invalid?? (I might be wrong here)
This is not the first time though He proposes solutions that are complex, inefficient, unmaintainable. And i think he doesnt understand ruby on rails or webdev in particular. This the first time i complained or I never complained because im thinking im just a junior and he hs more experience and has a higher degree. This is mot the case here though. I guess not all person who has a higher degree are right. To all self thought and bachelors im telling you not all people who went to prestige university and has a higher degree are correct and right all the time. Anyway ill continue later and do what he says. Let me know if im wrong please. Thanks4 -
Programmers are freaks with three limbs and square heads. During your fiery conference speech, as the crowd laughs, one filth, who is your manager, tells another filth, who is someone else’s manager: “Look, this is my mule. Can code many hours. Don’t has to pay many moneys. My mule is more good than your mule. In Bangalore, they ask very many moneys for this mule.”
And you know damn well that when in Bangalore they ask less, you’re gone in a flick of a pen. Your company sent you to give this talk. Meetup? No, just a freak show for mules. Is it a dick measuring contest for investors? No, not at all. As you speak, this filth is fucking his secretary in Aruba while his wife is dying of cancer in Miami. And the supreme filth, the one that has no eyes and no mouth? It grins. Go mule, spaces versus tabs. Vim versus Emacs. Linux versus macOS. Divide and conquer.2 -
I know I can't be the only one of us that listens to dev related podcasts. Does anyone have any good ones they'd like to share? I'm looking for something more entertaining than Software Engineering Daily, yet more informative than MS Dev Show.1

Just gotta say, YouTube videos that show connecting a form to MySQL make it so much more complicated than it is...

I’m working on a side project just to not die from the repetitive college workload
I want to public the GitHub page so I can get more feedback then when I occasionally can show my teacher. As well as get advice and ideas from a larger group of people who all have more knowledge and skills than me.
But every time I think about pressing that button to show the world, I get worried about embarrassing myself, like this is my first large scale project all on my own. Using tools and a language I’m teaching myself in my free time with occasional advice from my teacher. What if it’s so horrible I just make a fool of myself
What does devRant think??1 -
Oddly enough, i have simultaneously been less busy and more productive since working 66% remotely.
I find myself with more time that feels "wasted" or not busy, but my metrics show that I have more production, better results, and far nicer documentation. A bunch of us also sat down and did a bunch of coursework on really putting together a domain script library for one click onboarding of new servers or new client setups. We spun up a bunch of new virtual environments that literally solved headaches that had existed for years that never got dealt with because of too many other tickets.
Some of our web clients freaked out at us because the business is moving away from doing maintenance of legacy web work (small to midsize businesses). But it didn't matter. Rather than respond with a "make them happy," the response was "well, we will get rid of them as clients. We need to focus our energy on the essential service sectors we support."
Hell, we even got an automated test that has been broken apparently since 2018 to work again.
Granted, the incoming workload has slowed down. But it's still interesting to me to see that despite the slowdown, there isn't any concern; its still paying the bills and we are getting rid of technical debt everywhere. Tbh, this has really been a good reality check.1 -
Hello everyone!
Today, I want to show you a CLI program that I am working on.
It is called Chaker, and it is a Hacker News 'client' written in Go (or Golang) for the terminal.
(The 'client' is in quote because now it is more of a web scraper with a UI rather than an actual client that can do stuff like login/logout etc.)
It is pretty usable for now, but I am planning on other stuff too.
Check it out!

I tried to convince my boss that choosing ruby on rails would be a great framework for the projects they want me to develop. I even put together a presentation to show why it's capable.
I did it because I've completed a great course on coursera, and wanted to gain more experience in real projects.
Yet they've dismissed the idea cause there is noone else working at the company who has any competence in rails, so I have to do all the work in yii. There are lot if similarities between the two framewoks but I have no interest in php and I haven't touched php in like, 8 years...
Need to find a way to practice rails in the meantime.1 -
Don't you just love that moment when you see shit,
Flying.
In a bow.
Through the air.
And actually just starting, just starting, to hit the fan.
Three days before your deadline.
And it is crystal clear the project is gonna end up as a mess.
Total disaster.
But the best thing of all: it's not your fault.
So, you are actually celebrating the mess to come a little, and know that you can blame the guy who isn't trusting you as a new guy, and show him, with all his more years experience, he is the one who can't be trusted.1 -
This one is easy: Visual Studio!
More time than I'd like it suddenly stops working properly. For example, without changing anything, it starts to show errors on the code that worked before, or says that included libraries aren't included or are missing and showing errors everywhere. When working with the Win32 API it was a hassle to work with resources. When working in .NET I didn't have a pleasant experience either.
However, most times, all I had to do to get VS magically (exactly the same code) working properly again was to close it and open it again (or reboot the computer).
I had a couple of University projects delayed because of VS 😡
But VS has it's advantages and cool (working) features...1 -
Reading through the bugs list on Trello...
- change colour and style of button to make it more prominent
- change default for select box
- add a popup to explain the UI on 1st visit
- if I don't save the entry, show alert to user on exit
- remove the map button under the map that links via auto scroll to the map above it
- remove the settings options for the items we designed but you couldn't implement due to lack of time / budget / low priority
It goes on, seriously...

is pre-debugging a good thing?
I have a habit of implementing a project(for e.g. a mobile app) like this: See the project, break the tasks to be done into small parts(Like UI layouts- setting, listeners to implement , graphics involved, background threads required, databases necessary, etc.)and then code each of them step by step , while simultaneously testing their working (For all possible test cases I could think of ) side - by side. this results in my project getting developed in far more time than other people, but I always have something good and working all times to show to my bosses. But I really feel stupid when I spend 2 hours handling the animations and ui while I have yet to look into databases and other more important stuff
I guess that's a habit from my good old python days(its IDLE was a playstation for me) but I wish to know better approaches,if any?4 -
So... I just got to the next fase where I'm being asked to do a technical test. What they ask is for me to develop an Android App with 4 different tabs:
- First tab I need to receive data from a github url, parse it and show it on a recyclerview, save it on a database, and be able to search it.
- Second tab has to show 50 elements in a recyclerview, with a header that has to fill the entire screen and when the user scrolls down, the image has to fix to the top of the screen, and never go back when you scroll up.
and two more exercises with variations but almost same difficulty.
..... to deliver at 10 a.m at the 26th of October.

WHITEPAPERS.
Not exactly a programming problem, but one of my many task (as i am apparently a multi headed hydra) is it to find Software for tasks. I made the experience, as more marketing experts are on it, and as more SEO is poured in as more information about a topic degrade.
Two examples:
i wanted to find out if there is anything that speaks AGAINST "the cloud" as a concept for Data Procesessing and Storage. (Beside that the company internet connection is crap). There are tons of documents that in a semi "scientific" way show that having a data centre with a constant staff of experts is superios to everything. And it goes on, every company has a different version of basically the same document, and they all subtley show that THIS company is the best.
Example 2:
ERP Software, the most infested pool of filth i have entered yet, be it just a tiny CRM System or a full blown SAP clone, they all have those "Whitepapers" that first look somewhat scientific or informative. Like "the top8 common pitfalls when introducing an ERP system". 7 of them read logically and were what i expected, the 8th was "dont get your IT involved".
Yeah sure, IT doesnt understand economical processes, fair enough, but not getting it involved at all sounds like selfdefense. A further look showed me that this particular vendor has a web-based solution but doesnt provide any further informations (srsly, the website is starved of actual hard informations). The screenshots let the software look a bit oldschool but what really threw red flags for me was the sentence "we are ready for Win10, we did significant adjustment to perform excellent with Windows 10"
So, either they have some system interwoven stuff (so why bother with Webbase then?) or its just another marketing bullshit sentence.
Either way, i found it to be really hard to get ANY reliable information about this particular topic which adds to the overall world experience of missinformations and the all-being "fakenews". But for many things one can usually filter through a lot of different informations that can be pieced together, with this..its all outright propaganda camouflaged as "useful information", some even try to let it look scientific. In the end its all biased..
ultimativly, this rant is about all the people that write those missleading whitepapers, fill the world with biased informations and make the whole planet a worse place.2 -
I have to build a webapp in a month that parses through PDFs and inputs data into the right places for at least 3 different PDF documents. We would have had more time but so many delays in the class has led to this shit show being accelerated. I'm not ready.4

Hey Everyone I'd like to let everyone know that I finally found the original file for my Doomsday Algorithm and thought it would be fun to show you the dirtiest code I've ever written (I was 12 when I wrote it).
here is the github link, https://github.com/LiamHolmesEPD/... , and I'll likely update it will more cleaner languages in the future.2 -
I just wasted a good half hour trying to figure out why my Python dictionary was in alphabetical order.
I’ve had issues with dictionary order before with 3.5, but that was more or less Python just wanting to put shit in the order IT wants, not alphabetical. And I haven’t had that in months, not since updating to 3.6.
Long story short, VS Code has decided to show me my dictionaries in alphabetical order when I hover over them while stepping code. If I do a print statement, it shows the dictionary in the correct order.
Seriously, you don’t need to do me any favors here.
Oh, the adventures I have with Visual Studio when Python is involved...3 -
Talking about Skype, more specifically Skype for Business, how hard is it for MS to implement a nice way to switch chats between mobile and desktop? When a colleague sends me a message on Skype and I open it on my phone it won't show up on my desktop for at least a few minutes. WHY?!

Fucking stupid sons of motherless goats!!!

Why do people think that putting in more hours = more productivity and sitting extra makes you a more hard working employee?
Today out producer guy indirectly tried to tell me to 'be more productive' and to show 'some dedication'; I asked him outright that is he implying that staying beyond office hours is how I'm suppose to do it and the asshole replies how else would you? (in a non aggressive way)
Fuck this attitude. 😐2 -
Knowing I'm probably more experienced and a better developer than most of my peers but not able to show it in interviews to land a job that actually would use it.2

I'm genuinely contemplating changing my career to an IT support role from my current web dev endeavors.
I have become rather disinterested for quite some time with web development, I've been working with React, Angular, the regular Wordpress stuff with the theme building/modifying, headless instances, plugin development and whatnot and all of these have become more of a chore than anything else.
I'm leaning towards an IT support role as I genuinely have more interest in a user support/infrastructure support role than a developer role, the question is, is it doable ?. I know my way around Windows and Linux Servers, know LDAP, Active Directory, BASH, Powershell, Networking, can do cabling and whatnot but I don't have the experience to show off those.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated3 -
So i keep thinking why don't people make reminders of a goal they want to follow.I mean i use it all the time it helps me be more organised.
** Do remember i am a NOOB in web Dev and would like to get better**
++// Any suggestions are greatly appreciated //++
So i came up with a Web App where
" we enter something we want to set a goal based on and the time duration we want it to run it for."
What's the best part " reminder is displayed in terms of a calendar with some animation (where we click on the date to show that we have lived up to that goal for that day)"
The page would also have a counter like a clock which would tell the user who has logged in if or not they are Procrastinating or actually following their set goal. -
does 8.5$ per hour it's cheap for developing an android game?

So as usual I received some call from telemarketer and I started from other perspective this time.
I asked how I can be sure that the person on the other side is telling the truth.
That pissed the telemarketer that started challenging me by reading my company data but I calmly responded that it doesn’t proof anything cause I don’t know anything about you - the person who are calling me.
I know who I am but how I can trust who you are ? You just provided me your name that I don’t know it’s true cause I have no methods to verify that.
That pissed telemarketer so much.
Some time ago before you put money in bank you know the banker. If someone was stealing this money you probably know from your police who is it and where he’s probably hiding.
The future we’re trying to go right now with this machine stuff that makes job for us is completely different.
We’re more and more separated from reality that is our planet dying. More and more animals and plants are dying, nobody cares about it.
Despite me working a lot with new tech I am more and more sceptic of how technology is shaping us. We sooner or later wont be able to shit without computer ( lots of us is probably already there bringing cellphones as companions for good nice shit rolling ).
Is it the future we want ?
The future where you need to beat computer to have contact with nice people. Cause I see it everywhere now. The technology is stupid and not perfect so lots of us is forced to align to this crap right now. Use the technology and beat the algorithms to connect with human. That’s the future we want ? Really ?
Some idiotic algorithms that are trying to tell us that this is what you need to watch ? This is what you need to eat ?
This is where you need to be ?
Take our time and turn it to view count slash likes and subscribes shit hole ?
The technology power show that everyone wants to buy but you won’t even use 10% of it’s capabilities cause it’s blocked by company that sells it ?
I’m more and more disappointed by this world.
Anyway Telemarketer didn’t want to admit that is alien robot who is trying to kill humans by selling me this machine so I hanged up cause I had nothing more interesting to say.
I think they will finally stop calling me.2 -
Just received an email from a company i applied while searching for a new job. They sended me this little assigment to show my skills since they had the feeling i couldnt show them much.
(they browsed through 3 of my websites while i was there, including a check on the code)
It was a simple layout assigment. Just a responsive page with a hamburger menu (also mentioned during this interview)
It took me a couple of hours to create it and ive send it back in the hope of some positive feedback.
Feedback: assignment was pretty good but it show a lack of php experience. I was clearly more on the .NET side.
....
I just sended html, css and js files as requested. HOW THE F* DO YOU COME TO THIS CONCLUSION?!?!
Damn idiots, im glad i found people that actually do know how to hire people!2 -
This is just me throwing out my thoughts from the past few weeks.
edit: this is long
> Working on a C# project. its going well Its teaching me a lot about SQLite and file IO. I'm having a lot of fun with it, even the debugging as much I want to slam my head on the wall but I'm not asking for help so far and I'm very proud of myself because it feels so much better. like I don't mind asking for help but its so much more rewarding and I learn more from it.
> I need portfolio of software I can show off to employers and the current project I'm working on is the first programs in the portfolio. The place I want to apply to uses C#, but I still wanted a few other programs in other languages such as Python or JS just to show what I'm capable of.
> I was looking at what ASP.NET Core offers and it impresses the fuck out of me, and confuses me. The parts that confuse me, like for example the normal asp webapp is a very impressive hello world app. and it has so many different files and such but how or what do they expect me to add? how am I supposed to work with it? and if I delete any files I don't need (the premade js, bootstrap, jquery, html, and css) it produces errors because of the project files are pointing to those. and i know I can use the empty project (I do) but does that question my ability as a dev since I don't want to use it for my projects?
> On that note I love using Intellisense and debuggers and auto complete and I can go without them I just don't want to rely on them. idk I've just been a little more stressed these past few weeks.4 -
Internship/Career Question
I was able to get a referral for a software engineering internship at a company I like this summer. This will be my first “real-life” internship and I’m super excited.
The referral ended up getting me an interview with the company’s “Principal Talent Attraction Consultant”.
What show I expect for this meeting? Is it possible that there is a whiteboarding part of this interview? Or would it be more general?
Lmk if I’m being too vague. Thanks guys!3 -
Image Voyager with it's golden record is found _now_.
How disappointed would an alien race intelligent enough to decode and understand the pictures on there (which - imo - show us as civilized as possible) be, coming here and find us just waiting do die because of shit we did by ourselves.
Hard to imagine an extraterrestrial race is in any way like us, but it's even harder to imagine them coming to us, maybe even hoping for peace, because they live through the same shit as we do - just to find more shit.
They didn't include war, poverty, disease, crime, ideology, and most important: religion in the pictures on the record. stuff that essentially made us who we are today but at the same time show us at our worst.
we know what's shit about our behaviour and we don't want to show it to aliens but we don't change them at all.

Well, after I convince my most beloved client which, minimal design is meant to stay well, clean and sleek. There can't be too much elements to be in it. So user can have a very comfortable experience browsing your website...

Just to show you.
The overhead between actual SQL requests and the stack :
.Net 6 =>
Web API =>
EntityFramework core 6 =>
(middleware) GraphQl.EntityFramework =>
GraphQl =>
SQL
Seems a lot ? Yep. But actually... that shit just scales. More sql requests will not cost much. And this stack will take care of generating optimal querry better than me by hand.
(These querries on screenshot are fairly complex).
I like it. So, so much checks done for me and front end people love it too ! They don't need to open a tiocket when they need a new field.
So, /adpoted by me.
PS : And pair it with Blazor, miam.1 -
Can't help but feel a bit guilty because I have other stuff I should probably be attending to, but I think my site could use a good update; it's been (I believe) a year, and I had a few ideas on ways to improve the look and effectiveness of it.
I have other projects I must attend to as well if I plan on making any real money, but I think I deserve to spoil myself bit by bit over the next couple of days. I want to make things more programmatic for the sake of easier updates in the future and to show off to potential employers a bit more.
Wish me luck guys😀 -
Use all the stuff I learnt working on my VR game for work to create a demo for my own VR game and have it built to amazing quality, also show progress of it during my time building (at least screenshots/gifs and features to entice people into waiting for it to release and build a fanbase)
Not sure if i'll get that done in 100 weeks but i'll certainly try my best! I really love developing games eitherway :D and love developing VR games even more! -
Dev1: Something is not adding up
Dev2: Yea I saw it too,
Dev1: We can come up with an algo to show more controversial content vs really bad content
Dev2: They already LOATHE the algorithm, and make videos about it,
Dev1: If we remove the dislike count,
Dev2: ... sync count will not be centralized
Dev1: ... because only the creator will see the dislikes
Dev2: ... view count v dislikes will be totally blurred now
Dev1: ... coz the dislike code depends on the "has the user viewed it" algo
Dev2: meaning people will have to watch is more than the threshhold!!!
Dev1: but people are not gonna be happy
Dev2: we didnt get negative feedback on the small experiment
Dev1: Fck it, PR will handle it
How I think it really happend, because I cant wrap my head around this shit1 -
Today I created some reusable clean decent code to replace the random chaos in a huge project and then realised I had 3 options:
1. Sort out every instance to use the new code. This is very high risk because the project is both a shit show and has no tests. I don't have time to manual test or write unit tests on so much stuff.
2. Move over only some so that I can manually test. Still no time to unit test (management is fucked on their priorities). This will fuck the project even more since i will never get time to revisit this and adds yet more inconsistency and chaos to a project on its last legs and has this problem in droves.
3. Leave the project fucked
\_(^^)_/
I'm veering towards option 3 these days.1 -
My most upsetting rejection come from before I got into tech.
I was working in visitor services at a a cultural institution and I was trying to transfer to a different department. A big show was about to open and we were anticipating large crowds. I was tired of the stickup rich people that made of most of our guests. Now, there would plebs would be coming in droves and they would be even more ill behaved.
I didn’t get the job and had to continue on visitor services. It was upsetting because I was trying to save myself from mental stress. I went through months of being verbally demeaned by gross visitors and had physical injuries from working the incessant crowds. Only the seasonal hires were given special gifts when the show ended and I received nothing.
I did reapply for the transfer again when the position reopened a year later. I got the job. The hiring manager admitted that he should have hired me the last time. The girl they hired left after a year because she wanted to go to grad school. They wanted someone who was going to stay longer because training and hiring takes time. -
WHEN:
...when the analyst decides whether a feature is too complex to implement or not.
So you don't get the requirements because he thinks it's too complex.
So you develop something that has nothing to do with requirements. Actually much more complex.
And after that, one week before deployment, the customer actually show you and the analyst that what you did is fucking useless.
It was much easier, or at least completely different.5 -

Customer (to me): I was talking to [my coworker] and he said to [generic fix]. I just wanted to let him know it worked!
Me: I'm glad to hear that--I'll be sure to let him know!
Customer: Thanks!
Me (to coworker): That person said your fix worked.
Him (an atheist): Thank Jesus... thank Zombie Jesus!
Me: More like "thank Barry Benson."
Coworker: Who is Barry Benson?
Me: *Googles Barry Benson to show him*
We both cracked up for like a full minute. -
>new feature in application uses external API
>external API has unreliable response times, requires polling to get results, no way to set up webhooks or whatever
>tech lead proposes asynchronous system which will queue up user requests for processing and use websockets to warn frontend clients of finished query results
>higher ups say it will take too much time, make tech lead cut back in scale and treat external API like a regular synchronous REST API
>team dutifully implements feature within the constraints of the new smaller scope
>higher ups try out the feature, find the usage experience is extremely shitty, but don't back down, they only let tech lead scale back to original scope in small increments that still allow new problems to show up
>feature takes up same time or longer, but with more damage to the mental health of developers

Why the hell some people put all responsibilities of their own choices on other? And why do they think that everyone is so stupid to let it happen?!!
We are finishing an MMP, and the only director (quality) on the defining panel is starting to say "It's not what I wanted to". He fucking knows we recorded EVERY WORKSHOP!!!!
So know we have to rush some modification so we can show the "almost finished product" tomorrow, and I need to prepare all proof to destroy this mother fucker!!!!! It's tiring!! Why can't people accept and own their errors!!!!
And then I'll have to explain that as e rushed for this demo, we'll have to do more work to clean the job they asked to rush!
WHY ARE PEOPLE SO FUCKING STUPID!!!!!! WHY DO PEOPLE NEED TO ADVOCATE FOR ABORTION UNTIL THE 2240th WEEK BY BEING PRICKS!!!2 -
Sometimes, I feel my school is a prison.
I'm sitting there, 8-10 hours per day, learnin' things I already know, and all I can do is sitting quiet to `don't disturb during the lesson`. I can't even use my laptop.
But, school also is nice in some ways, my principal allowed me to run a Hacktoberfest event in my school, make kinda radio in our school and make an app for our SmartTV (yep, we have a TV in school) to show weather, changes in lesson plans etc.
But still, I really feel this is the prison. One more year, and I'll finish this shit and go...to another school because `you need to graduate to do anything in your life`. Btw, do ya know any good ways how to become CTO or COO one day? Just asking. Greetings, I hate my school, have a nice day.10 -
If modern computers have more memory but websites demand more memory, doesn't that defeat the benefit?
For example, let's assume YouTube's HTML-based user interface from 2014 needed 100 MB of RAM per tab. Now, computers might have 4 times the RAM on average, but YouTube's polymer JS-based user interface (UI) might need 400 MB per tab, a proportional increase. In fact, the browser needs to walk through a heavy 10 MB pile of JavaScript before being able to show anything on modern YouTube.
It seems like the higher demands nullify the performance benefit from the increased specifications of modern hardware. Computers get stronger but demands and workloads rise too, so performance isn't improved because some website operators feel the need to show off their "fancy" JavaScript.2 -
I don't know many things 100% for sure, but I do know that I won't be enrolling in a developer boot-camp - so I don't need to see any more commercials for them. I'm not the target audience. Just show me commercials for cars I can't afford. Anything but programming schools for beginners.

just has a discussion with a web developer didn't go well
we have to make a site. server side and client side has to be implemented it has realtime data also
Now his solution was aws + Python script for sever and a client web app that will show the data
i suggested firbase for server and client web app , cause it will be cheaper for us
he said that its more work for him to do firebase and application cost will be high
i am my self a developer ( worked on Android , web , but mostly microcontroller and hardware)
i don't understand cause from what
i see firebase is straightforward
am i wrong ?2 -
some reflections on "reports"...
Many of our customers are asking us to summarize the information in weekly or monthly reports, send them through email to the relevant members of the organization, and store them. Managers want to promote it as one of our most important featues and place many work hours into it. I get the utility of periodic reports in a pre-computer world... but we have the ability to show the whole history, and then seprate them into weekly or monthly averages. You can see the data in real time without having to wait until the next report. We could just give them a link and say "hey, if you ever want to see how your company is doing / history of your progress, here's the data." I feel like the only utility of reports is for people who don't have the initiative to look at the state of the company more than once a month (like investors)3 -
I understand that to get a promotion or a level boost you should try to do duties far above your level to show you can do more.
But what if your manager deems that the expectation? What if they don't believe your work is really above your level, and find your lack of domain knowledge compared to someone who's worked for 4 years a restriction from getting promoted? And also what if you can't get involved on projects to increase the domain knowledge you specifically lack (we have a service we don't develop for but own and get pages and resolve incidents for it, and it's an ancient one without good docs).
I just want advice on what should one do to be able to get a promotion at this stage6 -

All I want from Instagram reels is cringe creators dancing around producing more cringe,
But no, it has started to show me videos of people getting killed/slaughtered/slashed/shot these days.
I'm not even kidding, everyday it shows me a video of someone getting killed in a car crash, gang wars where someone gets shot in the head, someone splattering their head on the ground falling from a good height.
That too in full 4K quality, no pixelation or censorship.11 -
Small experimental demo using JS, CSS and a bit of PHP.
http://abitus.net/tests/...
The code, all mixed in a unique ~600 lines 'index.php' file, is ugly af. But I was mostly interested by the concept here, so it's really intended to be a dumb prototype.
However I think this works. The idea was to use a conceptual design solution in order to show links temporality when it is based on their popularity. More a link gets clicked, more bigger and slower it will be.
There's still a lot to improve. It could work with images or even more complex contents like articles. Just a matter of improving the UI.
Please feel free to play with it and give your opinion. What do you guys think of the concept ?1 -
I am looking for a file manager to use.
I want to organize my stuff a bit better and I would like to use a file manager so browse through the folders. Important: it should be a cli file manager!
I also would like to use it to organize some photos. I thought about setting up some meta data database to find stuff more quickly later. Some cherry picks from the holidays to show people, or private documents etc.
Any ideas?
I am using ranger atm and I am somewhat happy, but the use of meta data is limited to the cwd only.8 -
Liferant. I feel annoyed If I compare my efforts to efforts of my "friends". I put 500% more in my self education, my career and professional life and I earn just a tiny bit more. I don't even know if I have friends anymore. We do not have a single thing common. While I want to develop, learn something, build something useful for people, they only want to drink, going out etc. Before we had some lan parties some game night but it was long ago. I lost any interest in travel and parties. I don't enjoy alcohol, I still consume it when I'm with them because there nothing else to do. I also become vegan about 2.5 years ago and those bbq`s are just pain in the ass. Plus I heard the sentence "show me your friends and I tell you your life" - uff.. I had never a single person who I knew personally and who has similar mindset like I do. Shall I start to look for friends? Even the thought feels kind of pathetic to me. I'm a freaking island in middle of the society who is trying to make it better but it's fighting against it with full force. I'm tired. I'm not suicidal and I still enjoy the life, but I'm crazy alone in what I like to do.2

Has anyone ever resumed at a new place and was impressed by the code inherited from their predecessor? If yes, did you see any need to communicate this information to the admin or the superiors he left behind?
For as long as I delved into code quality, I've taken great pride in my work and have been enthusiastic to show it off to anyone who cares to listen. I'm morbidly afraid of a colleague berating my work over something I didn't do correctly or don't know. But none of those I've worked with have that kind of time for pedagogy. The only thing I've witnessed them care about is how much your code breaks, to what extent your endpoints break, etc
Does this make code quality practically an overrated metric? All your fancy oop patterns and clever algorithms or business logic basically goes unnoticed. The business cares about output and your colleagues are more concerned about implementing their deliverables.
Is this just my experience or a more general situation of things?8 -
So I had been spending more than a week trying to figure out why the status messages which should show up after an AJAX request doesn't show up. Turns out, I kept removing it in the ajaxstop method... -_-

How to market an app?
So I am working on this very simple app. It has more or less one feature and also a quite limited target group. I make the app mostly for myself because I need this one function that it has but it would be nice to get a few bucks out of it (after I get the bugs out of it). I can't tell you what the app does (I realize I sound one of those "like facebook but..." people) but imagine those really simple apps like the many water level apps you can find in the app store but only musicians will ever need it.
So here is the question: should I limit functions and show adds and sell a pro version or only offer one version and always show adds? It will be a handy tool for those who really use it so maybe someone would consider buying it. On the other hand, the features are way too cheap to spend money on (who would buy a flashlight app?).
Thanks for your help!1 -
I find myself using explainxkcd more often on my phone...
Because Firefox doesn't show the whole title text... -
Tomorrows meeting couldn't be more messed up
•boss(we are kind a thing now)and her ex sitting at the same table while she tries not to kill him
•me sitting there with someone else's shitty website with 20 day old code to show as a back end (previous dev was a cunt and deleted all copies from everywhere)
•them expecting a junior dev to build a whole accounting package on the 20day old code
•deadline 3weeks
• crying on the inside 😱😱😱5 -
We should bring back the death sentence by hanging for those fucking retards who show their software update notifications as fucking popups after I start the program. No, notepad++, I don't give a fuck about your update. Fuck you FileZilla, I'm on a hurry, stop shoving your almost full screen update window in my face. Oh and the visual studio installer. Don't even get me started on the visual studio installer.
Would it be too difficult to show the update notification on the bottom of the window on the status bar? Maybe with a higher contrast color so it's more noticeable?9 -
Your website is slow. Your icons don’t show immediately. Says one boss to the other. Meanwhile i’ve spend already days on this issue am aware of it since 12 motnhs. But hey, since it’s the boss, let me just check one more time and make sure this is more about someones internet connection then the loading speed of the website.

- CarPlay, this will need screen time soon, ui so beautiful you gonna plan a journey by tinkering with the dials
- Check time (part 2) on the iwatch, My big head is still in the way
- Fitness app, Sleep app, Health app, Medication app, mmm lovely but still cant put my confidence in AI
- M2, saw it coming. Spec: scaringly powerful.

When grafic designer design a list of products where on top of the page is header with title, category description, big fucking image, big fucking category navigation and on second screen list of the products.
Just why? Why put the important stuff (products) on second screen? Just why? You have three asses of space, you fucker. You can put category list on fucking SIDE. How many time you did this shit?
What about multilevel categories when menu just show current category children? I need to go fucking back or what? FUCK YOU! Stick this stupid boxes into your ass and design real navigation.
What is so fucking great to having big ass monitors and design more and more one column websites, just why you fucking retard?4 -
Trying to book a trip to the sun. Filling in personal info. -> "untranslated error message".
Trying again -> no more room for these dates.
Trying again on another computer -> the date itself does lot appear (but other dates do show up as "fully booked")
IS IT SO DIFFICULT?? WHY CAN'T YOU MAKE YOUR WEBZ WORKZ!!?!2 -
Why does devRant show I have 6 unread notifications?
I cleared the cache. Even downloaded the mobile app to check whether it was only a problem with the web-app.
No, that number is still there. The mobile app claims it is the comments section. I scrolled down to 2019 ( no, I haven't been all that active ) and still no unread notifications.
Why didn't you think of putting up an 'unread tab' when you were creating all those tabs on the mobile app? Please add an unread tab 🙏
Also, the read and unread markers in the dark mode could have a little more darker contrast difference in the dark mode. I don't know about light mode, because I don't use it ( but I could check once I get notifications from this rant; I'm turning light mode on for a brief while to check this )
I haven't had unread-anxiety before, but I guess I have it now ( not really though )23 -
If there existed a framework like pytest for other languages, would you use it?
If that framework made those tests part of the documentation to show how the system works, would you be more likely to?2 -
I've been messing around some more in Brainfuck and I found a really useful algorithm to copy Blocks. The code I used it with is pretty inefficient but it helps to show what it does

I haven't coded a new project in a long time. I want to build something, show it to the world and hope people use it. I love webapps as I'm pretty experienced in this, and have a huge interest for smart homes, internet of things, twilio, innovative payments and more. What could my MVP be?

What do y'all think? I'm new here, junior. I finish my tasks generally well within the allotted time. At the moment I take my time, look over my work and try make sure I've done things correctly / as best I can. At first I tried to work quickly and show that I was motivated. Now I've really lowered my acceleration because it feels like no one else is in a rush.. except for when there's deadline pressure. It feels like no one really expects me to get much done. Like, change the theme colors, you've got 3 days. I'm done in like an hour. So I go sloooooooow, change something, go on Reddit or devrant, change something else. Don't check that change in yet, they'll know you've been finished for hours...
Do you think this is the right approach? Or should I try apply myself more, get more done, do extra tasks when I have time? From what I've read online, it's generally not worth working "more" than necessary because it's not appreciated and just results in people expecting more from you.
Thoughts?1 -
Okay so for each activity i need a background to add to show the activities more attractive... Is there a designer tool for android which lets is design the backgrounds instead of colors ?1

Why did the Telco's POC turn into a comedy show?
Because expecting to fit two SaaS offerings into three ec2 dibbas , and ended up with a performance that was more of a stand-up routine! -
Typical attempt to automate an annoying task, overengeneering more and more for hours, just to find out, that an iframe is blocking my way while searching the DOM. The iframe doesn't show me his descendants (did some research on that), hence the element I'm looking for cannot be queried, which was a main goal.

Dumb question, but does anyone know how to make VSCode show more of the path than just the folder name on the side bar, I am working on making workspaces to avoid opening 6 file explorer windows but a lot of folders for my workflows have the same name but different locations on the network and I can't change the folder names for automation purposes.
I know it shows the path if i hover over the name, but i'd like to just show path by default on the side panel
example image below (can't show real folders due to NDA)6 -

Hey guys I've got little question, sometimes it is more convenient to me to get the adb Debug informations in a terminal instead of Android Studio, is there any way ONLY show Logs from a certain level? Even after reading the docs I couldn't figure it out 😥😥😥 -
https://symfony.com/doc/3.4/...
Look at how they write docs:
"->atPath('foo')"
how can I fucking know what to pass instead of foo? I cannot make show fucking error message near the field.
Are they writing such doc so that we would spend more time searching how to make show fucking simple error message?
"The atPath() method defines the property which the validation error is associated to. Use any valid PropertyAccess syntax to define that property."
Property on my entity is collection of $values . Tried passing 'values' - no effect.2 -
TypeScript is bullshit. Change My Mind:
I am a student and I started learning typescript as an advanced project at the recommendation of my teachers because I am a bit ahead of where my software development course is.
I started by testing the logic of types, and then I encountered type: unknown.
According to the TS handbook:
"If you have a variable with an unknown type, you can narrow it to something more specific by doing typeof checks, comparison checks, or more advanced type guards that will be discussed in a later chapter:"
So according to what this says, if you check a variable of type unknown, to equal a certain object type, typescript will allow you to assign that unknown value a I tested this out with a data type - objects and typescript freaks out.
Also, if create object with a property assigned to a function, it won't even show you that property when you console.log the object
ALSO, you can't post urls in this website, so this website is also pretty trash.12 -

I like how classes are getting more interesting and challenging But I don’t like how I don’t have time to work on my own projects. I have plans for them and I know where and somewhat how to do things. But between classes, homework, things teachers ask me to do, TA work, and medical issues I don’t have time to do my own thing anymore so GitHub is going to show massive spots of inactivity making me seem dis-interested in things not school related
