Hey everyone,
First off, a Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
Tim and I are very happy with the year devRant has had, and thinking back, there are a lot of 2017 highlights to recap. Here are just a few of the ones that come to mind (this list is not exhaustive and I'm definitley forgetting stuff!):
- We introduced the devRant supporter program (devRant++)! (https://devrant.com/rants/638594/...). Thank you so much to everyone who has embraced devRant++! This program has helped us significantly and it's made it possible for us to mantain our current infrustructure and not have to cut down on servers/sacrifice app performance and stability.
- We added avatar pets (https://devrant.com/rants/455860/...)
- We finally got the domain devrant.com thanks to @wiardvanrij (https://devrant.com/rants/938509/...)
- The first international devRant meetup (Dutch) with organized by @linuxxx and was a huge success (https://devrant.com/rants/937319/... + https://devrant.com/rants/935713/...)
- We reached 50,000 downloads on Android (https://devrant.com/rants/728421/...)
- We introduced notif tabs (https://devrant.com/rants/1037456/...), which make it easy to filter your in-app notifications by type
- @AlexDeLarge became the first devRant user to hit 50,000++ (https://devrant.com/rants/885432/...), and @linuxxx became the first to hit 75,000++
- We made an April Fools joke that got a lot of people mad at us and hopefully got some laughs too (https://devrant.com/rants/506740/...)
- We launched devDucks!! (https://devducks.com)
- We got rid of the drawer menu in our mobile apps and switched to a tab layout
- We added the ability to subscribe to any user's rants (https://devrant.com/rants/538170/...)
- Introduced the post type selector (https://devrant.com/rants/850978/...) (which will be used for filtering - more details below)
- Started a bug/feature tracker GitHub repo (https://github.com/devRant/devRant)
- We did our first ever live stream (https://youtube.com/watch/...)
- Added an awesome all-black theme (devRant++) (https://devrant.com/rants/850978/...)
- We created an "active discussions" screen within the app so you can easily find rants with booming discussions!
- Thanks to the suggestion of many community members, we added "scroll to bottom" functionality to rants with long comment threads to make those rants more usable
- We improved our app stability and set our personal record for uptime, and we also cut request times in half with some database cluster upgrades
- Awesome new community projects: https://devrant.com/projects (more will be added to the list soon, sorry for the delay!)
- A new landing page for web (https://devrant.com), that was the first phase of our web overhaul coming soon (see below)
Even after all of this stuff, Tim and I both know there is a ton of work to do going forward and we want to continue to make devRant as good as it can be. We rely on your feedback to make that happen and we encourage everyone to keep submitting and discussing ideas in the bug/feature tracker (https://github.com/devRant/devRant).
We only have a little bit of the roadmap right now, but here's some things 2018 will bring:
- A brand new devRant web app: we've heard the feedback loud and clear. This is our top priority right now, and we're happy to say the completely redesigned/overhauled devRant web experience is almost done and will be released in early 2018. We think everyone will really like it.
- Functionality to filter rants by type: this feature was always planned since we introduced notif types, and it will soon be implemented. The notif type filter will allow you to select the types of rants you want to see for any of the sorting methods.
- App stability and usability: we want to dedicate a little time to making sure we don't forget to fix some long-standing bugs with our iOS/Android apps. This includes UI issues, push notification problems on Android, any many other small but annoying problems. We know the stability and usability of devRant is very important to the community, so it's important for us to give it the attention it deserves.
- Improved profiles/avatars: we can't reveal a ton here yet, but we've got some pretty cool ideas that we think everyone will enjoy.
- Private messaging: we think a PM system can add a lot to the app and make it much more intuitive to reach out to people privately. However, Tim and I believe in only launching carefully developed features, so rest assured that a lot of thought will be going into the system to maximize privacy, provide settings that make it easy to turn off, and provide security features that make it very difficult for abuse to take place. We're also open to any ideas here, so just let us know what you might be thinking.
There will be many more additions, but those are just a few we have in mind right now.
We've had a great year, and we really can't thank every member of the devRant community enough. We've always gotten amazingly positive feedback from the community, and we really do appreciate it. One of the most awesome things is when some compliments the kindness of the devRant community itself, which we hear a lot. It really is such a welcoming community and we love seeing devs of all kind and geographic locations welcomed with open arms.
2018 will be an important year for devRant as we continue to grow and we will need to continue the momentum. We think the ideas we have right now and the ones that will come from community feedback going forward will allow us to make this a big year and continue to improve the devRant community.
Thanks everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community!
Looking forward to 2018,
- David and Tim48 -
New for avatars - emotions! You can now change your facial expression on your avatar to better capture your dev mood! Getting expressions working right turned out to be quite the undertaking due to the ripple effect of the various layers that each expression touched so our total layers just for men ballooned out from 300 layers to 1100. And @dfox re-architecting how layers work to handle the interconnectedness of expression meant tying together facial expression, skin tone, facial hair, and hair color to make sure everything stays in sync. It’s a fun new addition, I hope everyone enjoys!
I also want to apologize for the delay in getting this out, I meant to have this done ages ago but I got thrown a curveball at work and was laid off back in April and have been super stressed running around trying to find a new job for the past 3 months. I figured I’d have more free time to work on devRant, but hunting for work is so exhausting, it’s really taken its toll emotionally and financially (no unemployment benefits because according to my state even though we lose money every month “you’re still a corporate officer”). Things are finally looking promising on the job search front, and I expect once things get back to normal @dfox and I can get our release velocity back up, but until then, please bear with me.
P.S. If you have the resources, we certainly do appreciate your support with devRant++ Your monthly contributions really do make a difference! Thanks all!44 -
Hey everyone,
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
Tim and I wanted to reflect on the year devRant has had, and looking back, there are a lot of awesome things that happened in 2018 that we are very thankful for. Here are just a few of the ones that we thought of (this list is not exhaustive and I'm definitley forgetting stuff, so please comment about those!):
- After nearly a year in the making, the completely overhauled devRant web version was launched (https://devrant.com/rants/1255714/...)
- @linuxxx became the first devRant user to hit 100,000++! (https://devrant.com/rants/1157415/...)
- We once again pulled off the greatest April fools joke everrrr (https://devrant.com/rants/1311206/...)
- @trogus started making awesome devComics and http://devcomics.com was launched
- We added a feature to allow rant filtering by post type (https://devrant.com/rants/1354275/...)
- We made it so avatars could have expressions! (https://devrant.com/rants/1563683/...)
- We had a booth at TechDay New York and got to meet some devRant users! (https://devrant.com/rants/1394067/...)
- We made major backend architectural improvements - including spinning up a special high-powered-CPU web server to handle avatar creation and make the creation process much faster (https://devrant.com/rants/1370938/...)
- App stability: mainly Android - we fixed crashes, did a push-notif overhaul, and tried to continue making the apps better and more stable
- A record amount of devRant meetups were held, and we couldn't be more proud about that, and we thank every person who organized one! (just a few: https://devrant.com/rants/1588218/... https://devrant.com/rants/1884724/... https://devrant.com/rants/1683365/... https://devrant.com/rants/1922950/...)
We had a busy year, and despite some things going on for us personally and some setbacks around those, we think this was a very productve year for devRant and that we are going in the right direction. We're continuing to constantly evaluate feedback from members of the community to decide where to take the app next. We're fully committed to improving the devRant community in 2019 and we have a lot of ideas about how we can do that. We're working on some things, but we're not really announcing them yet, so please sit tight for those :) In the meantime, feel free to let us know what you'd like to see improved/added the most as we always like to get updated feedback from the community.
As always, thank you everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community!
Looking forward to 2019,
- David and Tim26 -
EDIT: devRant April Fools joke (2019)
-------------------------
Hey everyone!
Today, @trogus and I are very happy to announce a devRant feature that we’ve been working on for many months. After extensive time and money investment, it’s finally here! Introducing, pixelated avatars!
@trogus came up with this awesome idea about a year ago, but we couldn’t get it just right so we had to tons of work/research to make those pixelated avatars give the full sense of retro and ULTIMATE pixelation. We think everyone will appreciate how this effort turned out.
Anyway, let us know what you think, and we hope you enjoy!
p.s. here is @trogus’s avatar - the model we used to make sure the feature is perfect!51 -
New avatar releases! We now have many more skin tones, programming language t-shirts, new glasses, and more colorful hair options for the female avatar! Check 'em out!72
-
I thought i'd see what the avatars look like with different color eyes.
I personally like red. It really brings out the undying hatred I have for my peers.8 -
Introducing avatar pets & a new way to unlock avatar items! Pets include cats, dogs, birds and tigers. We know getting all those ++'s can take some time, so while all avatar items are just as reachable for free by earning ++'s from rants and comments, we now allow items to be purchased in-app based on the difference in ++'s you have to the ++ unlock value of the item. (To purchase, you'll need the latest app version)
Paying for avatar items helps us keep the devRant servers up and running and also is extra motivation to add more fun avatar items. If you have any questions or find a bug, please let me or @dfox know. Happy ranting!38 -
Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for waiting for this new release of avatar items! We have new pets, new computers, new eye wear, some fun shirts and a special treat for our #1 ranter @linuxxx. The required ++ pts for these are a little higher than normal to reward the dedicated people who have helped support and build this community over the last few years. Thank you all!33
-
New avatar options! New bg colors (yellow and blue), new hair styles (short spikey, mohawk, dreads), new shirts, new stuff to put on your desk, and new glass desk13
-
EDIT: devRant April Fools joke (2020)
-------------------------
We've been at this a few years now, and over the last 6 months we've been working closely with a brand consulting agency, and after numerous developer interviews, surveys and focus groups, we've come to realize "devRant" is simply not capturing the cultural zeitgeist of this new decade. Therefore, we have a bold new brand that will be rolling out over the coming week. devDucks is our bold vision for the future, today. devDucks speaks to a new generation of software engineers who resonate with a more upbeat, optimistic tone when they go to an anonymous web community to swear and lament their current work situation. While we finalize the new logo and other key marketing collateral, we have started a staged roll-out of our new brand styling, including the conversion of all avatars to literal devDucks. We hope this brings more joy to your ranting, as it has to ours. Sincerely, David & Tim (@dfox & @trogus) - devDucks co-founders56 -
Petition for the pixelated avatars joke to be a permanent feature.

Ever wanted cheat codes to devRant? Well, that's weird. But here you go, I guess.
Since the avatars do not use any external assets (Such as images), all avatars are generated. To be friendly to people who want to make third-party devRant clients (such as devRantron), avatars are generated server-side, so that the assets don't need to be distributed, and third-party programmers don't need to work out rendering avatars.
But this allows you to cheat a little.
The devRant avatars API works like this: you request a really long URL from the API, specifying the IDs of each cosmetic item the user has active, and it returns a PNG file. But you don't need an auth token to generate an avatar (which makes sense), so the avatar API is essentially a sandbox you can play around with if you have the time and patience.
You can write a really good avatar previewer with this knowledge, and see your avatar with a white tiger, even if you don't have the ++s13 -
devRant terminal client.
Currently it can display rants, comments and images and avatars are
converted to ascii images just for fun.15 -
Found a random website that lets you design your own anime avatars, its quite in depth and there are many art styles from different artists available:
Pros:
* It's comprehensive, and it has a lot of styles available
* Editor is intuitive and Modern
Cons:
* It's in Japanese, you might wanna use GTranslate.
* Randomizer fucks up on some of the more in-depth art styles.
* Seems to be mobile-exclusive design for the editor.
You can check it out here: https://picrew.me
Here's a little sample from picrew on the Gorilla Art style
(Note: this is actually my GitHub avatar as well)18 -
!rant
Welp, I wanted blue hair in my avatar, but since it's only supported for women's avatars, for some reason, I guess I'm a female now 😋😂💙💁53 -
Discovered this app and the cute avatars. Found out you need at least 10 points to create one, so here I go! Just finished my third year in computer science, now exploiting the positive discrimination for girls to get summer programming jobs ;).17
-
Fun fact is that I only noticed the 666 rant count AFTER changing my avatars gender for fun/trolling!14
-
This morning I saw the announcement about new avatars... but I was a bit disappointed because I feel it was missing something... something that I have recently requested a few times....
So I've taken the initiative to create a prototype what I would like.
Anyone else want this?36 -
@dfox, @trogus: Just came back and WHOA! Awesome avatars! I want to make my avatar like me, but there's no long wavy hair. Or heels. Or skirts/dresses. You get the idea. Can we get a couple more feminine options for the females?
*smiles intensively and flutters eyes*😇4 -
Does anyone else know everyone on their notification list by [user]name? Like, glancing at the avatars and think "Hey {name}, what's new?" I'm often right about which comments/rants they've ++'d, too.
I know quite a few of you by name, too 😋28 -
@dfox you need an option for no shoes in the avatar builder. Probably underwear only for some of the gents.17
-
So after fucking around with trying to setup pi-hole to block avatars in devrant, so I could just use it instead of a no-root firewall and accidentally deleting the devrant app data, I discovered this little option, let's pretend it was never there 🙄7
-
So I decided to commit to a big project. Since I want every user to have some default avatar before I implement file system, so I wrote a simple avatar generator:
https://txstc55.github.io/simple-av...
Feel free to generate some avatars!32 -
!rant
One thing I love in devRant is the avatar design. Everytime I open up a rant, the replies below with avatars look exactly a group of developers talking in a bar.
It just visually makes me comfortable.6 -
The avatars items can be updated via the secret api, without an app update
@JS96 seems to be the only person who knows this api (3rd party) since there is a black raven in UWP avatar editor.
@Skayo searching for the api...
@Floydian thanking @trogus
@dfox staying quiet
devRant being an avatar fam.7 -
Perhaps very timely with the pixel avatars, here is the windows console rendering a blue frame and some text at 300+ FPS.21
-
Had to change my avatars clothes, dont want people thinking i dont wash.
Went to check my closet on the app, shit... Im a poor bastard. Dont have enough money, cough i mean points to get that new pair of shoes ive been eyeing.
Got me thinking, we are all essentially sugar mommies and daddies. I always wanted to give that a go, so far im liking it.
Long story short - thanks for this space everyone including the community
#liveLongAndProsper Dev Rant2 -
To create your avatar: go to the menu (top left icon) on the main feed, tap "profile", and then tap "Build Avatar". Enjoy!3
-
Dreading the long queue at immigration line at the airport, i saw this ad. Reminded me so much of our avatars , i had to post7
-
So I had a thought this morning while brushing my teeth.....maybe I should change my devRant avatars clothes every day? That way it looks like a real person and stuffs......then it HIT me suddenly.....I'm a fucking loser.1

// devRant unofficial UWP update (v1.5.0.0)
I decided to release another "big" update before v2, with some interesting and useful features already present in the official clients and a completly new feature suggested by users present ONLY here ("hide notifs already seen").
I hope you enjoy it! 😉
v1.5.0.0:
- Added weekly rant banner to rants with 'wk' in tags;
- Added avatars in notif list;
- Added ability to hide notifs already seen;
- Added 'draft Rant', you can now write a Rant without posting it, it will be automatically saved and available to be posted later;
- Updated Swag Store, now always up to date;
- Updated 'Mute notifs from this rant', now except @mentions;
- Improved date format of rants;
- UI improvements;
- Minor internal changes;
https://microsoft.com/store/apps/...2 -
So by trying to make my avatar look like me as much as I can, I've came to realisation that I'm the most generic looking guy mother earth ever compiled. If that even makes any sense...
-
Small bug: If you scroll down a comment section fast enough, avatars will be wrong (last avatar...)13
-
Time to make a deal with the devil
@theabbie since you love downloading the entire devRant db and writing little gimmicks, I have an idea for you.
Avatars are envcoded as URLs. Each part of an avatar is separated by an underscore. Shirt, pants, desk, whatever.
Make a bot or script or website or what-fucking-ever to query users with the same avatar as you. This would be:
- Same EXACT avatar (desk, pets, etc)
- Same body parts as you (face, skin color, hair, etc)
- Same body parts and clothing (everything that shows in the mini avatar next to comments, plus pants and shoes, I guess)
The doppelganger finder. Honestly I think it would be neat.
Would be even cooler if you could filter by active users (last post/comment within past 3 months)33 -
@dfox & @trogus
Any thoughts on allowing people to buy their avatars (and others) as stickers? I understand I can just download the pic and get my own made but a built in feature would be cool - it'd be a nice way to say "hey! I really like your rants!"
Just throwing it out there 🙂4 -
This is a proposal for an entirely free and open source rant like site/app.
devrant today has a couple of problems that I hate:
* Posts in the wrong categories (usually by new users)
* Low effort posts in the "recent" feed
* Good posts in the "algo" feed that are too old
* Longtime bugs
* No official code format in comments, ffs.
* Unimplemented features (like inability to search posts in android, or inability to mute posts in web desktop)
* Lack of admin involvement with the community
but it also has some aspects that I like a lot:
* Admins aren't trigger happy to suspend/ban you
* The avatars are awesome and help to associate users to faces
* The ++ system is good enough
* The community isn't too big so you know pretty much everyone
* There's a lot of variety in the roles and techonologies used by users
* Experienced ranters are usually smart
* Super simple UI
* The comments have only one level (as opposed to reddit comment trees)
This project should try to reimplement the good things while fixing the bad things.
I wrote two posts about a possible manifesto, and an implementation proposal and plan.
https://rantcourse.ddns.net/t/...
https://rantcourse.ddns.net/t/...
I think the ideas outlined there are very aligned to concerns of privacy and freedom users here vouch for.
This project is not meant to **purposefully** replace/kill/make users abandon devrant. People can continue using devrant as much as they want.
I'm hosting a discourse site on a 5$ linode machine to discuss these things. I don't know if it's better than just github.
If you feel that you would like to just use github issues, let me know. I'll create a github org tomorrow, and probably setup gitter for more dynamic discussion.21 -
Announcing devRant 2.0! It is time for exciting overhaul, sponsored by our good friends at Tencent, that will bring life back to this amazing platform.
- elegant simplicity of Viber meets excellent minimalism of AWS
- custom avatars for ++ members
- exciting mini-games
- animated stickers
- ChatGPT integration for ++ members
What a time to be alive!9 -
Is anyone else experiencing slow image loads on the mobile app?
Even avatars are taking a long time to load. And I'm using wifi.6 -
Have had avatars deactivated and blocked both on web and in the app for a good while now and it feels weird seeing them on some peoples screenshots10
-
Does anybody else think the new expressions are nice and all, but most of them are not really made for those small avatars we have?
most often it looks like the person is about to ask me about how they got their scars or they are making fun of asian eyes while laughing about it
it looks great once you zoom in on the profile, but on the smaller size version it just looks odd
there is some exceptions that actually look great on the small avatars too, but most of them don't8 -
What good is a developer focused avatar WITH NO NECKBEARD!!! This is heresy, damnit. I demand a neckbeard on the next patch or we riot! Nobody is that cleanly groomed, these avatars are all lies.6
-
That moment when you're dragged to a meeting with a group planning a dating app with custom avatars, discuss about what art style to use (realistic vs cartoonish) and the guy in the suit casually mentions he doesn't understand how there are people attracted to "hentai" and its related art styles.
😨 -
It's been a while since i update you all on my devRant projects but i have some updates to share with you on my API wrapper...
- added avatars api
- added searchTags api
- added storyRants api
- numerous tweaks
http://github.com/nblackburn/... -
@trogus are you responsible for designing all these cool avatars?!? they are so simple and sleek and AWESOME how did you do it what do you use?4
-
devRant keeps getting better and better! Collabs are great and the new avatar pets rock! Thanks devRant team.
What do you guys think of my new pets?2 -
I love the fact that once you pass enough time in DevRant you begin to identify people rants and comments by their avatars. Anyone else has that reflex or my brain's RAM is just taken by chrome and it is easier for me to just remember some pixels? xD2
-
So now we can have bird everywhere on our avatars, there should be some mask option for bird head, just like in Team Fortress 24
-
I think we need angrier facial expressions for the Devrant avatars, I mean shouting curse words with a calm collected avatar really undersells the rant
-
So.. pets for your avatars.. but I don't see the alternative of having a baby crawling around your feet available for choosing instead of dogs and cats.. crawling around, biting cables, smashing my keyboard steeling, buying adorable and distracting her dad from working. because that's what my home environment looks like.. maybe I don't have enough ++'s
;-)6 -
I really appreciate the idea of unlocking items for avatars with a raising amount of ++s!
It's an awesomely elegant way to motivate devs without pushing them and keep them in the regular user base of devrant.
Dear sirs @dfox and @trogus.
You done a very fine job :)1 -
Where my female developers at? :D
Have only seen dudes (as far as I can tell from the avatars) since I started.
Also curious to know what you studied/are studying/planning to study at school. I'm a sophomore bioengineering major, started coding as a hobby since 5th grade!7 -
Describe one devRant member in the comments (not yourself)!
@trogus is designer that made devRant the beautiful place it is now. It is often overshadowed by @dfox, but without him, especially the beautiful avatars, this place wouldn't be half as popular as it is.49 -
devRant avatars: Where's the hoodie?
Maybe it could be a separate category from Shirt, and you could add all kinds of outer wear from vests to parkas. But either way I'd love to have the option7 -
- Created an account on devRant. Need 10 +1s to create an avatar.
- Got >10 +1s for the 1st rant. Yay!
- Spent ~30 minutes building a custom avatar. Not satisfied.
- Went back to select one of the pre-made avatars.
- Realized pre-made avatars list gets updated everytime you open.
- Closed & opened the profile page for 10 times. Still couldn't stick with an avatar.
- Back to avatarless. 😎😎3 -
Is it just me or with every Dev rant avatar the males seem angry/annoyed and the females look worried?7
-
thank you @dfox! love the new avatar builder!
is it possible to link those avatars/expose an api to use on other sites?5 -
Hi guys, I'm back!
I spent some time not using DevRant, I got a new phone and thought it would be better not to install it for some days. I had to do a lot of stuff for school these days and didn't want to geht distracted by amazing devs posting cool rants. So here I am, happy to see you all again. (Or at least your avatars)12 -
@dfox awesome avatars, the devRant avatars are really nice addition and just avatar we can edit them too.1
-
Is it possible to train a neural network to detect devRant avatars? Could be an interesting project...
Hm. Maybe later.5 -
Are avatars fat shaming? All the avatars on devrant are of skinny people.
I want me a fatavar to reflect my current status.12 -
Is there an api to fetch avatars?
@dfox
I mailed to you a long time ago, but not getting any responses.7 -
Went to dfox' profile and saw a penguin as a pet, not sure how late I am to that and frankly won't profit from that as I block avatars, but that's awesome!3
-
@dfox, @trogue I think with the birds, tigers, glass tables, monitors, and other toys in the avatars now. It's time for a new cartoon of the chaos and destruction that ensues when the pets fight!
Who's with me?2 -
My eyes are burning. Too much color on the notifications page, evil avatars.
There should have been a warning "Do not open in dark!"5 -
I sadly had to delete my old account because I realized people could trace me back with my old username (and by some of the info I shared).
I love devRant too much to leave though. I genuinely feel like I've known some of you for years when that's just some internet forum full of ranting avatars5 -
I think I've officially changed everything over on my dev rant profile. I love all the options for the avatars. I wish changing myself in real life were this easy.
-
!dev
When you have to change your avatars skincolor in devrant because you haven't seen the sun in ages...3 -
Just changed my avatars skin color a tone darker since it‘s summer 😬 keeping up with real life. And expression chosen really fits reality 😱👍🏼😂2
-
We can now download our avatars! Thanks @dfox and @trogus!
Am I internet explorer, or just late to the party?1 -
Well, support chat of my bank has nice avatars of persons answering my questions. But they so small...
Ok. Inspect element... Image link. Oh, it's just 2500x2500 image resized to 35x35... Now I just need a small hand-crafted chrome extension to add click to enlarge on these avatars.
These girls are really pretty though:)3 -
Had a thought, what if after 10k ++s users were allowed to upload an image as their avatar? Just an idea.1
-
Fuck, now I'm actually somewhat mad how much time those figma plugins could've saved me lol.
Especially things like generating a quick color palette, that immediately pastes them next to the element are so damn useful.
Generating real-life data into text elements, avatars pulled right from an API, auto fetched graphs for example data, all the goodies that make life easier.5 -
Don't you just love how dR's avatars are all nice and fit? Making us think no developers are overweight thanks to sitting down all the fucking day?1
-
I had a dream that devRant introduced new avatars but you had to sign in with a Tencent account to get one4
-
Hmm... These pixel avatars seem to be controled by a switch in the URL...
Pixelated:
https://avatars.devrant.com/v-22_c-...
Normal:
https://avatars.devrant.com/v-21_c-...1 -
Are the pixelated avatars devRant's April's Fools joke for this year? Is it a bug? Is it a feature?7
-
!rant - Love the new pets but only shoulder birds show up in mini avatars on posts. Cats should be available on shoulders too. :) One of our team has a cat that walks on a harness, rides & sits on his shoulders around town and while he works.2
-
It's oddly satisfying to have a ducky on my avatars desk. Thanks everyone for the upvotes. Cheers!!! 😁🍻
-
!feature so i didnt found facial hair of needed lenght on devrant. avatars need more longer beards.2
-
!rant
Avatar request: separate colour choice for beard.
... I'm not exactly in the 99%, but my beard hair isn't the same colour as my head hair. 😂5 -

Maybe a usefull function for the fellow developers here, in case you need default Avatars for your users. "UI-Avatars". Just 'discovered' this beautiful API today and it really is easy and helpful! :D It even has a PHP package if you would like to generate them yourself.. This is not an ad or anything, it's just a usefull API, like 'placehold.it' etc that could be useful for anyone out there! -
I wish it was easier to embed devRant avatars 🤔
I mean I know I could use the API to receive the avatar (haven't looked into it yet) or even scratch it off profile pages, but something like
"https://avatars.devrant.com/USERNAM..."
would be much nicer I think 😋.
Any thoughts?4 -
So the avatars of people never load in my devRant app. Except for the user profile screen. Post and comment screens just show Colors circlez. I’m curious. (Yeah my app is updated to latest version)5

Not a rant, but a concern: should I make a bigger effort to take my picture off as many public places as possible on the Internet? I already use avatars for FB and Twitter profile pictures (share photos only in private). Or am I being paranoid? What do you do about it?7
-
Apparently when people with no avatars show up in notifications, devrant defaults then to a single random? Avatar. Changes though every few 30sec/refresh?

Request :
Please add more Cartoons as it is really fun to see the devRant avatars in action
Please make it happen @dfox and @trogus3 -
So I opened devRant to find the new *bling* expressions feature added to the avatars.
So I set my expression to happy because nowadays, for some reason, even though work has been tough, I've liked it. And things have been good. Mostly because my lead is on holiday and the acting lead is a hundred times better than him in all aspects (micro management and as a Dev).
Cut to the evening when I'm walking home, the lead calls me up to inform me on a production bug that had to be taken up (acting lead had already asked me to look into it, we had an agreement). And I *HATE* the way he assigns tasks and acts like I'm a wee baby who can't even find his mother's tit.
Anyhoo, ended up changing my avatar expression to majorly fucking frustrated because of the Damn phone call.
So kudos to @dfox and @trogus to adding these little features which make people a bit more expressive! -
¿Why some developers use mangatar for their avatar, exists any particular reason or is only another tool for made avatars?6
-
I'd like some fat avatars to represent my current state. Went from 90 to 115 KG during 2018. At 6 ft. tall I already look like absolute shit.7

Who else hates the mental asylum inspired Picasso “art” used by google and as seen in our devrant avatars? I think it’s one of the most hideous art styles there is. Why can’t we be kawaii isometric chibi characters or something.9
-
You know what would be nice? Custom shirt texts on the avatars. Obviously locked behind a high upvote score, and with a limited length, but I really miss some more obscure languages which will probably never happen otherwise.
-
how many users on devrant use avatars that don’t reflect themselves at all?
i wasn’t impressed with the character builder at all. no funky color options or stupid hair :(8 -
It's so weird that the avatars of profiles with originally no avatars at all keep changing.
I think that's a feature. Maybe an Halloween feature. Who knows
***EDIT***
When I give an upvote to someone from the comment section, the pre commentators and post commentators' ++ action button give a visual feedback. Their font color becomes white and rapidly changes back to a darker tone.1 -
So happy about the expressions! Now my avatar can feel how I feel searching for compilation errors on line 487 in some external library I didn't write! Thx devrant!1
-
@dfox @trogus, could you add more profile backgrounds?
If so, a gray one would be nice for me.
Perhaps letting users upload pictures for their profile could add more customisability (for the background I mean, love the avatars).3 -
Not a fan of the new avatars. Every avatar looks because is big yellow head and it feels confusing scanning through comments.6
-
@dfox
first, avatars are a great idea!
BUT I dont eant to wait until i have "n ++" to change the what computer (mac/non mac) is on my avatar/profile image. [the thing with the desk and watch is ok, but i think unnessesary. I wear a moto 360 every day so why schiuld i have none or another one that dose bot look like the one i am wearing on my profile picture]
COULD "BADGES" BE A SOLUTION ?3 -
@dfox I'm absolutely loving these avatars! btw I know I'm going to ask too much but can you add the facial hair with a goatee and no moustache.2
-
Devrant avatar builder is cool, like geek tool for geeks with no real value. They are all the same and not helping with personalization of posts or comments. Is there any chance to upload real image?
Or will be?
Haha, kill me.4 -
#adobexd got a new update as they do every month and i am totally loving it.
@adobe this month got a new update and these are the things you can see now in adobexd.
➡ Free plugins :- Yeah you can add plugins to your adobe xd now using which you can do a lot of stuff like pulling avatars , building icons , getting free ilustrations and much more .
For this go to the slide menu panel on the left.
On the bottom click on plugins icon
choose anyone and install .
Really great and handy feature .
➡Another one is that you can now use subscript and superscript for your text ,thats also cool feature as well.
Ok thats it
Let me know if you have any cool plugin you like from it . >>>>2 -
Codewars needs to enforce that people upload avatars. I've created all these hateful feelings for this black and white ninja-raver image... Is it that one asshole again? No. It's just everyone - and I can't tell who the jerks are anymore. it's silly. Just leave it blank or something. Anything else. AAHHHHHH!!!!
-
@dfox I kind of miss my skateboard under my avatars feet because I am always skating, even when I am coding 😂6

Meta made Horizons World open to all people that have Occulus.
I don't but watching a YouTube video all I can think is that the avatars and world look like the Wii one years ago... And well no better then mobile.
So would be better if they just used the anime art like Genshin Impact or Breath of the Wild...4
