Yesterday: "This fucking logic makes no sense. I can't work this shit out!"
Today (first look at the problem): "Oh... I think if I do this and this... Yeap, that'd work"
I love fresh brain thoughts in the morning.8 -
"Can you work on this ticket? It's kind of urgent."
-- "OK"
"And could you please not refactor? Just get this done."
-- "Why? What's the issue?"
"The logic is complex. We should not break it."
-- "Erm, that's what the tests are for. So yes, if the need arises, I'll refactor. The tests are my guidelines if the logic breaks or not."
There's a reason we create tests. So let's not hinder code base improvements by some random fear that stuff might break.
If breaks due to refactoring, we'll fix it by adding a valid test case during and then fixing the bug.
If my refactoring does not break the tests, I'll assume the code base is stable.
If your code is untested, then we have a complete different problem.3 -
Me: Can you go to that page and see if the issue is fixed?
Colleague: if I go there it breaks things
Me: yes, it should be fixed now, can you please check it to make sure?
Colleague: but if I go there it will break things
Me: Can you just go to the page
Colleague: it broke something
Me: what did it break?
Colleague: I don't know
Me: ...then how do you know it's broken
Colleague: because the gallery doesn't work
Me: WELL THEN THATS WHAT'S FUCKING BROKEN THEN ISN'T IT13 -

Manager: It’s called async *await*. Async *AWAIT*! Did you hear the two parts to that? You shouldn’t ever have one without the other. THEY GO TOGETHER. This was a fun thing that just happened:
I was sent a timed questionnaire by a potential employer for a software engineer job. I'm like okay, I will do it on Monday (today) because that is when I will have a free minute.
Well I sit down to do the thing and I had had a few beers, because the Ballmer Peak is real to me when I have to answer bullshit programming quizzes.
Well F me right in the A, it is a 38 question true or false logic quiz. And I am no longer a college kid trying to get into grad school so I have no patience for that crap, and apparently less with a little beer in me. How do i explain my friends that if a bottle of whiskey contains 40% alcohol and when i pour some in a glass. The glass will also have 40% alcohol.21 -
I can't figure out shit..
To be honest I created this profile just so I can write down somewhere what I am going through.
So, once upon a time I had graduated from college and went right into a corporate (has only been 2 years since). I was fortunate enough that I got assigned a project that was just starting, and even though I had no clue what was going on, I started doing whatever was assigned.
I initially worked in java and then finished all my tasks earlier than expected, so they switched me to another C++ project that builds on top of it.
Fast forward 2.5 years, I'm now the team lead of the CPP project and all my friends who were in the core team have left the company.
As usual, the reason behind it is shitty management. These mfs won't hire competent people and WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT retain the ones that are. I can feel it in my bones that it is time for me to leave, but fuck me if I understand what I am good at.
I have been able to handle all the tasks that they threw at me, be it java or c++ - just because I love logic and algorithms. I have been dabbling in ML and AI since 4-5 years now, but could never go into it full time.
Now I'm looking at the job postings and Jesus Christ these bitches do not understand what they want. I have to be expert in 34567389 technologies, mastering each of whom (by mastering I mean become proficient in) would need at least 6-8 months if not more, all with 82146867+ years of experience in them.
I don't know if I am supposed to learn on Java (so spring boot and stuff) or I'm supposed to do c++ or I'm gonna go with Python or should I learn web dev or database management or what.
I like all of these things, and would likely enjoy working in each of these, but for fucks sake my cv doesn't show this and most of the bitch ass recruiter portals keep putting my cv in the bin.
Yeah...

Having debates on order of operations. The one that is hot again is the 6÷2(2+1).

it is really frustrating not to be able to actually maintain and improve the code you're working with. i'd be happy to completely dig in and live in the code and get it all - not so much fucked up - , or, totally spitballing here, do some research on how we could improve the functionality and performance in general (which is not "nice to have", but rather ongoing customer pain points), but I'm not allowed to, because management hates having maintainable code or even an adequate number of devs. it rather has me doing hippity hoppity between different projects to make sure nothing gets my full attention. -.-
the only thing i can do is to clean it up a bit during bug fixes, but even heavy polishing won't fix this giant pile of garbage that is called our code base.2 -
So we had a class that should have 2 states 0 or 1, you think my coworker would be smart enough to represent it with a Boolean? NO!
Represent the state inside the object as an int then when using the object in a function creates a Boolean that determines the state of the object and after the function done it's job THEN call another function that takes the object and the Boolean and change the int state inside the object depending on the Boolean.
Wouldn't it have been whole lot easier to just you know..... Make the state a Boolean from the start.
When I saw this I knew I was witnessing a miracle of the human mind. God bless!
Ps: it wasn't connected to any kind of API nor server and there are never more than 2 states. It's just some local sequential code so don't assume it had a logical reason it's just a fuck up.5 -
WTF is this shit? Multiply by 0 * Math.pow(2,0) upto Math.pow(2, 10).
Like why the fuck would you write that and not write a comment as to why that logic and explain everything else. Fucking fuck.
Turns out this logic is supposed to mimic the back end logic of breaking the flag value into binary and then set other flags depending on each bit. But why would you do that? I was starting to doubt if 0*n = 0.
This piece of code is inefficient, trying to be smartass, doesn't explain shit and doesn't have the only comment that mattered.1 -

I’m all for writing boolean statements that are readable, quick to grasp the real life case they’re representing and align with the spec rather than being ultra-reduced, but sometimes the spec is written by someone who clearly can’t reduce logic. So when the spec says “if it’s not the case that any of them are false” and you write:
!(!a || !b || !c || !d)
then I think you should try harder. At least put a note against the spec to say “i.e. if they’re all true” and then write the sensible code. Just think of the poor developer that might have to augment your code at a later date and has to follow and intercept that shite. -

As I was browsing pornhub, I started reading articles about AI, dick still in hand, and went down the rabbit-hole (no pun intended) of self referential systems and proofs. This is something I do frequently (getting off track, not beating off, though I have been slacking recently).
Now I'm no expert but my neurotic DID personality which prompted this small reading binge DOES think it is an expert. And it got me thinking.
Godel’s second incompleteness theorem says that "no sufficiently strong proof system can prove its own consistency."
Then utilizing proof by contradiction, systems that are "sufficiently strong" should produce truth outputs that are monotonic. E.g. statements such as "this sentence is a lie."
Wouldn't monotonicity then be proof (soft or otherwise) that a proof system is 'sufficiently strong' in the sense that Godel's second theorem meant?
Edit: I WELCOME input, even if this post is utterly ignorant and vapid. I really don't know shit about formal systems or logic. Welcome any insight or feedback that could enlighten me.1 -

Here’s book most of you have either read a newer edition or some variant based on this book, as computer science students you had to take an intro to logic course.. prior to digital logic.. or atleast that’s how it went for me and many others I know.
Which regardless how much the universities screwed up teaching comp sci and programming.. this is one aspect I think they nailed. Requiring philosophical logic course for comp sci.
Again this isn’t a digital logic book. It’s just philosophical logic. The first edition of this book came out in 1953... and I think they are edition 14 or 15... for a book to have this many editions and last this long thru time it’s a good book.
It’s a book that should be a must read for anyone venturing into AI and working on human machine thought processing.
It’s a great book to have around as reference, considering philosophical logic is not a walk in the park atleast not in the beginning because it requires you to change the way you view things.. more specifically it requires you to think objectively and make decisions objectively rather than subjective emotional reasoning.
Programmers need to think objectively with everything they do. The moment you begin thinking subjectively .. ie personal style, wishes and wants, or personal reasons and put that into code for a code base with a team u just put the team at risk.
Does this book teach objective thought? No... indirectly yes, because it teaches the objective rules of logic... you don’t get to have an emotional opinion on wether you agree or disagree or whatnot, logic is logic even philosophical. Many people failed the logic course I was in university.. infact the bell curve was c- / D ... many people had to take the course more than once.. they even had to change the way the grading was done.. just to get more people to pass...
But here’s the thing it’s not about it being taught wrong.. people just couldn’t adapt to thinking objectively, with rules as such in philosophical logic courses. Grant it the symbols takes time getting use to but it literally wasn’t the reason people failed.. it was their subjective opinions and thought process interfereing with the objectiveness of the course exams and homework.5 -

I have been debugging for like hours trying to figure out the cause an unknown bug spoiling my UI by making my elements overlap.
I'm working on a Unit Converter that takes kWh and then converts to mWh. (Logical Conversion: 1000 kWh = 1 mWh).
Just an easy shit i thought, using Javascript I just passed the dynamically generated kWh value to a function that takes maximum of 6 chars and multiply it by 0.001 to get the required result but this was where my problem started. All values came out as expected until my App hits a particular value (8575) and outputs a very long set of String (8.575000000000001), i couldn't figure the cause of this until i checked my console log and found the culprit value, and then i change the calculation logic from multiply by 0.001 to divide by 1000 and it came out as expected (8.575)
My question is that;
Is my math logically wrong or is this another Javascript Calculation setback?13 -
Is the way people solve problems intrinsic to the native language they learned growing up? Can the shape of our thoughts be optimal for solving certain kinds of problems? Like sentence structure, grammar, etc.
If the pattern of thoughts a language promotes can help us solve problems. Then is there a spoken language that can help promote solving computer science problems?
I know I have to work to think differently to program in different styles of programming. I wonder if we can learn from different spoken languages patterns of logic that are applicable to engineering.
Mathematics, while not a spoken language, has helped me re-frame things in programming. I think programming has also helped in other areas. Like using binary search to find the end of a pipe in the ground.5 -

Today I finally experienced the power of something I learned in university: propositional and predicate logic.
Many developers I know think that such education is useless. Well, today I have proven that it is very useful. On a day to day basis, working on banking software, complexity in purely logic is very low. However, we have a screen that must show or hide elements based on some input values and conditions associated with certain elements. How hard can that be, right? Well, there are many variables to take into account and as such it's absolutely not trivial.
This screen didn't work properly and maintaining the code is hard as there is a lot of logic to show/hide, enable/disable things and so on. After quite some time and attempts by fellow developers, I decided to refactor the whole thing. I'm responsible for the quality of the software and it was quite degrading, so I had to do something.
In order to get things working properly, I defined collections of constants (ui elements) and predicates. Then, I defined for which element what predicates must be true, in order to hide/show, disable/enable etc. I then translated these predicates into code. And guess what? It works! Of course it works. It's logic. But I'm very pleased I finally could actually use some of all the math I studied!5 -

Can anybody explain the logic behind this...10 -
MRW I spend hours merging/deleting needlessly scattered configuration options and logic, and the application runs successfully4

You might not think that programmers are artists, but programming is an extremely creative profession. It's logic-based creativity.”2

Here's some nice UI logic in Android Play Console.
There's more than 50 apps in this account, so I click on Filter to find the app I was working on. Options are "Unpublished apps" and "Draft apps". The app I want is in "Draft" so I click "Draft". Nothing changes, so I figure it's broken. Then I try to find my app and it's missing.
Why?
Because some shithole thinks that a filter dropdown should hide what I'm looking for. Thanks for that! -
I have a single WinForm class, stuffed with all the logic it needs. 11k fucking lines of fucking nightmare code!!!4

How do you deal with relatively complex Boolean logic requirements?
Here's a simple example, of which I missed 50% of the cases because it was non-intuitive to me:
A year is a leap year if:
- it is divisible by 4
- except it is also divisible by 100
- unless it is also divisible by 400
To my intuition, the logic tree is as follows:
if (year % 4 == 0) -> true
if (year % 100 == 0) -> false
if (year % 400 == 0) -> true
so I ended up with 3 cases and I initially missed all the others until I started coding.
The full solution is:
if(year % 4 === 0) {
if(year % 100 === 0) {
if(year % 400 === 0) {
true
} else {
false
}
false
} else {
true
}
true
} else {
false
}
}
I don't like it when I don't immediately see all logic paths.19 -
Have any of you noticed how bad the new Google login page is? They invented reCAPTCHA, yet they use the old one. Considering how easy it is to make a mistake in the captcha and have to retype the password, people could start making shorter passwords (<16 characters) and seriously lower the security level of their accounts.4

Patching a legacy project: all logic inside an 8000-line file called class.cms.php, on frontend, one js file with about the same file size...

Me on code review : You should extract the logic into a separate method for better readability. Colleague completely ignores it. What should I do?6

Our informatics practical instructor's logic:

Sure that'll help xD1 -
The moment when you don't understand the code, is the your head getting drilled with a screw in circular motion.

Why do certain users ++ various posts of the same user in quick succession? I don't see the logic in this.10

Worst: Shitty puzzles which have nothing to do with logic, progressive solution, etc. You either know them or you don't.3

Binary combinatory logic (BCL) is gonna change the world. Yes, it's an esolang, but its easy to evolve populations of programs written in it. Then, when you have a winner, you can easily embed it in a C binary as a hardcoded arg to your interpreter function. Or use logic to translate it to any other programming language.1

The hardest thing about writing code that works can be logic. For example, figuring out how to say you want to go to the next page when the form submit button is pressed, but not actually move to the next step is an error was thrown during processing.
This is one of those times when. I force a random member of my family to sit there and listen to me talking, pretty much to myself, until I figure it out. But hey, it generally turns out pretty good! (If not my energetic nephew)4 -
#OAuth logic: Lets make OAuth1.0 simpler for clients.. TADA.. OAuth2.0.. OAuth1.0 looks simpler now??!!

The stress that comes from meeting deadlines, and always trying to keep the behavior/logic of what your working on straight.

We're developers, we use our logic everywhere, we might be use our brains more than others, so I ask you:
Have you ever thought "I'm the smartest of my friends", if yes, what is or what do you think your IQ is?

Over complicated htaccess rewrites that dont work due to the client's business logic. I hate wasting time on something that should take 5 mins.

Dear humans that identify as Frontend Web Devs,
I get that you aren't adept at the logic aspects of dev, but I would greatly appreciate if you tried to better your simple, common sense logic... or at least have someone do basic QA.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Citizen5 -
The logic in a method reflected a truth table not obvious to understand. The first time I implemented tests for coverage as I didn't trust anybody to remember and understand the logic after a few weeks.1
-
It is better to write almost all of the logic used in the code as comments/documentation.
Trust me.
It is a good thing. It increases Code readability.
Nobody is going to copy your logic and get hired in a high paying job or get promoted for that reason. People will come to know about your wit and will appreciate you instead.2 -
PHP scripters bashing OOP saying it's shit, yet I have NEVER seen them writing a procedural app that encapsulates business logic correctly3
-
I love the logic that underlies algorithm. But nowadays I fear that this is almost disappeared, now programming a software is 5% logic and 95% read system specificactions, documentation, implement third part solutions, think about who developed the system thought it had to be and rant because you don't understand it. I like to solve math problems using algorithms rather than deal with user interactivity, for example. Yes, all this is pointless, but sometimes I miss the exercises that I did at school or in "IT Olympiad"

Writes all logic for a colleague his project so he can meet his deadline. Gets complaining about code-style.

My client told me that she was not happy with her website because there were unnecessary boxes on one of the pages.
Me: Unnecessary boxes?
Her: Yes, at the bottom of the contract page.
Me: boxes... Boxes... Wait, did you mean the footer?
Her: Yes. They are not relevant. Please remove them. -
Anyone here tried the game Human Resource Machine? Pretty cool game since it's puzzle solving and kinda similar to programming (the logic of it)2
-
Just when I thought a project I'm analyzing has done a good implementation, I found out that they got lazy and started writing business logic DIRECTLY into models!! Now stuff is tightly coupled that extracting it will cause unknown effects.

Why the fuck do business whatsapp keep sending "not available " messages to new chat even when I am online... Fuck the conditional logic2

A bug in legacy code (java jsf....).
The dev, architect now, who build the app :
"Yes this is simple, the problem comes from the business logic in the .jsp..."
A bit later
"No, your patch does not suit me, you mix two different concepts"1 -
soo, i am unknowledgeable of ALL best practice.
lets say i call a php file called loader.php with a $_GET['type'] parameter, then after i check if type is actually set i switch the parameter and my logic then does stuff appropriate for $type..
do i create a lot of sub files with the program logic in it or do i just create subfunction (which i have to pass variables if necessary)?
Switch( $_GET['type'] ) { case 'foo': include "logic/foo.php"; break; default: echo "error"; break; }
or is the whole concept totally alien and stupid? i most honestly say that i dont know exactly what i could google to find an answer3 -
Always check your logic for non trivial modules or functionality before you write the code. It may take some time, but you can find a lot of possible errors or missed cases if you first put your logic in words...
You also get free documentation for your code if you write it as indented comments :) -
Client > requested scoreboard app

The worst type of exam question in University for me:
Using first-order logic (predicate logic) express the following statements:
(i) Every student except Tom is smiling.
(ii) Everyone likes everyone who doesn't like himself.
Answers:
(i) ∀x(student(x)→(¬Tom(x) <-> smiling(x)))
(ii) ∀x∀y(¬likes(y,y)→likes(x,y)) -
Hello, I am currently taking BS Computer Science and for this semester we are required to take a subject on Discrete Mathematics (logic).
My question is, how can I apply this knowledge in programming?
thanksss12 -
I find it very surprising that people at work are always reluctant to do code reviews. There are no standards in place and everyone is free to push whatever they want. There is Sonar but it doesn't catch bad logic. Don't know how are we going to deal with this technical debt.4

I was talking to some post doc researchers today about a complex logic problem and a fresher interrupted and said, I think you can do that with objects... (The logic problem didn't depend on how the solution is modelled)

Not quite sure I followed the logic of the tech lead when he explained. I've never felt this "idk wtf in coding" feeling before.

I've spent a day trying to figure out a code logic. Couldn't figure out why some codes that shouldn't be commented out are commented out.
Out of frustration, I went to see the user. She explained to me the logic behind it and I got it right away within 5 minutes.
Ask your user when in doubt and in trouble figuring out the logic. -
Clean code is the biggest bullshit in software development history. Oris it agile/scrum? Can’t decide yet.
Note: A new contender arrives with anti-nested coding cult. You hide your deep nested logic away from main logic block, so it is easier to maintain… Said probably by someone who never coded serious software.4 -
The Phoenix Project made me really excited about DevOps - but I see comments about it being old logic. Why isn't it used everywhere then?2
-
I hate web dev. I said it. When you build a simple website with clean, consistent business and display logic and your boss asks you to make exceptions for every goddamn record. Maybe it's how the type is rendered. Maybe something needs emphasis. Maybe the designer doesn't like how a specific record word-breaks, so you have to write logic to handle that. It's always SOME annoying little detail that takes hours and hours, complicates logic and won't even be noticed.4

The disappointment when you find an awesome new framework, only to learn that it uses a custom made variant of Python for logic scripting...

So functional programming is basically using prebuilt libraries anf functions and not write a single line of logic?3

Why did the pirate learn boolean logic?
So he could "arr" and "arr" without getting confused between true and false :)2 -
Hey people, ive had this question and it had been bugging me for a while now. If A^B, then A, if AvB, then B. What does that? What kind of problem is similar to this problem? Also, it it a contradiction, if so, what kind of contradiction is it? Does it have solutions, if so, what kinds of solutions?1

Hey guys hello
I am new on dev rants:)
I am pursuing bca and i learned a c- language so i feel difficulty in patterns programming i can't create logic easily to making a program to print some patterns.
So here you guys kindly please help to how i can i improve logic in programming please told me to remove that difficulty.

English:
"I'm a liar."
Supposing I tell the truth, I'm not a liar. But that would mean that I am a liar, since I said that I am a liar.
Assuming I did not tell the truth, I would be a liar. But since I said the truth, I would not be a liar.
If one starts from the classical logic, one can make no logical statement. If one starts from the three-valued logic, I would say that "unknown" (u, ½
Is that true, what do you mean?
Stimmt das, was meinst du?
