Hey everyone - just a note on rants about politics: we've had a long-standing policy not to really allow any of them. So if you post one and see it quickly disappear from the feed, that's why.
We've gathered a lot of feedback on this and Tim and I both agree that Facebook is ridden with posts about politics and one of the more refreshing aspects of devRant is we've kept it free of that. It's also an aspect of Facebook that many people I've talked to really hate.
Thank you, and feel free to let me know if you have any questions.31 -
Reinventing the wheel can be very valuable. Even if you don't create a better wheel, you'll learn a lot about how it works, which can really help you out in the long term.16

I had a dream where I got a job at SpaceX. Long story short, rockets fell from the sky, people died, and Musk got really angry. I don't think I'll be applying at SpaceX anytime soon.7

Providing work estimation:
Dev: This should take about 2 weeks
Non dev: Really? But it's so simple. Shouldn't be that long right? I think it can be done in one week.
*After one week*
Non dev: Why is it still not done? I thought you only need one week?9 -
After a long battle with CSS I give up and show the client a preview.
Client: I like how you made this first row a bit wider. Really makes it stand out.
Me: Yeah...right, that was intentional... 😎3 -
Love how a teacher of mine described IO wait for CPUs on a blackboard.
"That's calculation time." *draws three small lines on the blackboard* And this is IO wait. *draws a really long line, goes out of the class, out of the school, comes back* "Yes, this is IO wait. No matter how good and fast your CPU in your gaming PC is, if your hard drive is shit, everything is shit."5 -
FUCK HELL YEAH! I'm done with my FUCKING THESIS! I just handed it in - that filthy time eating piece of blood sucking papershit! God yes! I'm proud and relieved as fuck!
Got really sick as well! Fuck the stress! Fuck everything. I'm just gonna play Witcher 3 all day long with some nice cup of tea !26 -

Me: Why, I don't believe in blockchain on the long run.
Mom: You should start believing in blockchain and you should start using it for all your stuff.
Me: Mom, i really appreciate that you are trying to help, but why are you saying this? My projects have zero to do with blockchain.
Mom: Blockchain is the future, because the media said so.

If the Firefox Quantum is really good then you don't need to say:
"Chrome will become obsolete"
"I hope Chrome dies"
"Chrome's dead, long live Firefox"
to prove that it's a great browser. Fanboys always ruins nice experiences.14 -
Me and a friend are having a bite and drink in a park.
Friend takes a picture of the donut he bought to send it to a friend. The picture takes a really long time to send so I ask how big the picture is (obviously as in size (KB/MB) and he's an it guy/programmer as well).
Friend: uhm, the donut is... Idk... *shows size with hands* this big?
Me: *facepalm*
Friend: oh, that size 😅3 -
Once I had to clone a repo and it was taking too long...
Went to gitlab to find out in the most wtf way that from 1mb it was 600mb+ now...
One of our new juniors pushed 600mb+ of a database backup to gitlab...
I came to her with a smile and asked in a jokingly manner (after cursing her for about half an hour in my head):
"lol, did you really not notice it took a fucking long time to upload it?"
The fucker was ashamed but just said : no, I think I pushed it and went home.
I constantly reminded her of it for the couple months...
Never done it again :)6 -
I'm regretting not having have done this long time ago. You can tell the difference from HDD right away. Everything loads up really fast... Heck, Android Studio even loads fast lol
Switch to SSD to save your life and time 😀12 -
C#? Should have used Java
Java? So much boilerplate, use node
JavaScript? Terrible language, get some types
Typescript? Lipstick on a pig
PHP? Gross
React? Should have used Angular
Angular? Should have used Vue
Vue? Why aren't you using jQuery + HTML
VSCode? Use vim instead
Stfu, no one gives a shit about your biased closed minded opinion. Your users really don't care what technology you use, so long as they're happy.14 -
Me: I have been doing really similar tasks I'm going to spend some time making a template for it.
Supervisor: ok just don't spend to much time on it we have a lot to do.
Me: shouldn't take too long
1 hour later.
Supervisor : how's the work going.
Me: almost done with the template.
Supervisor: this is taking you way to long I need you to just get back to work.
Me: ok
He leaves and I continue work on the template.
30 mins later.
Show him the template.
Me: I cut my time on this specific task by 80%
Supervisor: good job glad I knew you should do it.
WTF YOU WERE TELLING ME NOT TO.5 -

I've had two different old coworkers that liked to yell at their computers. The first was a grayed biker who always wore a spiked leather jacket and could never understand what you say the first time do to his massive concerts in his youth. He used to swear some of the worst obscenities and slam his keyboard. He was actually a really nice guy.
The second used to make up obscenities. Myself and another coworker would keep mental logs of the things he said. The best was "fuckbats", we had many long talks about what a "fuckbat" would be and it's general elusiveness. He was also a nice guy, really one of the nicest devs I've ever worked with, he just got really intense under pressure.3 -
PRO LIFE SAVING TIPS FOR DEVS (long rant, not clickbait 😝)
I have a medical condition called DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). It clots blood in veins near lower body parts. Affected leg swells and become red and it is very painful. It happens when you very frequently sit for very long.
I used to play games, code and stuffs for hours and sometimes I used to stay at home without taking decent walk for weeks. I am only 18 and did not see it coming. But its really early stage and I might be fully recovered real soon.
This condition is not rare and happens to millions of people every year. And it can be avoided if you avoid sitting at computers for long hours and take 5 mins to walk or stretch. Even if you can avoid this condition, there are many others if you dont pay attention on your body. Please take some time to google how you can avoid anything such.
(Please don't comment sympathies, I really know you wish well for me. Instead you can throw tips what you do to relax after long hours of work).15 -
Me: Making me work 17 hours without a 8 hour break is illegal.
Manager: You just sit at a damn desk all day and long shifts are required of IT
???????? Do you really think I just sit at my desk twaddling my thumbs?13 -
11:45am: "Ok one more issue to fix and then I can take a nice long break and relax a little bit. My next meeting isn't until 2.
12:45pm: "Well this issue is taking longer than expected but that's okay. I can grab lunch and still relax a little bit."
1:59pm starving, thirsty and really need to pee and can only choose one. Oh, and the issue still isn't fixed: "god dammit."6 -
I hate Microsoft!
But i gotta say, VS Code is a really good IDE. Guess they should've gone open source a long time ago14 -

#¤%@ kid!!! My 5yo son has obviously been playing with his mom's mobile phone. At first, I thought it was a little cute, when I received incoherent texts about Roblox, one of his favourite games.
But then, I suddenly heard from my sister who was really upset and worried. She was wondering if my gf really wants to see her dead, after receiving a facebook pm in English, saying "oh die :-)".
No need for auntie to take it personally though; turned out she was not the only one getting the same message :-O
A little boy is facing a mobile ban for a very long time...8 -
I've been using atom for a long time. At work I recently switched to visual studio code. I really hate Microsoft... But I really love visual studio code!14

After over 1.5 month long recruitment and 4 stages (3 technical and one with HR) they finally said it was last stage and they will write to me with their decision soon. I really want to get this job. It would be great step in my career and I could learn so much more compared to the company I'm stuck in right now. Actually working with new and interesting technologies! Can you imagine?
Hold your fingers crossed for me guys.7 -
@dfox
the only thing i really miss on DevRant is a loading bar/circle on images and gifs.
im always there guessing how long it will take to load.3 -
I really really want to start working.
I have social anxiety, but my mom is really on my ass about bringing in money. I need some sort of job that I can do from home on my computer.
Something related to programming.. Administration.. Whatever. I don't mind having to learn something new to find work.
I have no formal qualifacations.
I don't care how easy or hard it is, as long as I can make at least $100/mo.20 -
Okay so this is just a rant about my personal life because if I post it any where else no one will really care.
So I graduated from a vocational high school where I learned about basic IT and networking skills but I mostly focused on my programming. and I LOVED that school honestly the environment was so amazing and everyone and everything about it was amazing. then I started college recently hoping for the same thing and its just depressing me, and my depression is coming back and I cant stop it because I cant distract myself from it. My friends are always off playing Monster Hunter Ultimate and Im just wishing theyd hop back on Warframe so we can play again.. They say they will but they really wont so im usually just playing alone or going online which is sometimes fun if you have people that talk back.
so i took myself to the official warframe discord to find people that would help but everytime I ask I just get ignored. So Im stuck playing alone.
while thats happening Im not really getting any messages from anyone besides my girlfriend which is nice but she isnt able to really keep up a conversation and shes often busy with school as well. when I try to talk to any of my friends they arent really interested to talk or just send short replies that obviously tell me to go away. one friend in particular she and I used to talk everyday not even in a romantic way just straight up besties for life, but after one of my relationships ended she basically took her side and never talks to me now. Ive just been really lonely and wanting to just have my friends talk to me again or just have some programming friends I can chill in a discord server while we code but I cant bring myself to ask anyone on the specific server im in for programming..
Honestly idk if anyone on devrant really looks at my posts and thinks "oh look Bubbles posted again". I feel like im not good enough to be here because Im not nearly as good as all of you, Im mostly just here asking questions or posting extremely fucking long posts no one wants to read. and yet this is still where most of my interactions are and I love that this devRant community makes me laugh or feel better about myself sometimes. and I thank all of you for that and I remember your @ 's all the time.
honestly the only real highlight of my week was when my teacher of my vocational class asked me to come back as an unpaid intern to help teach his new programming class and It made me happy but other than that I havent been too happy.
if anyone actually got through this holy shit youre awesome and thank you a lot its appreciated.21 -
I've got to say, arriving at my teeny tiny rented room after a long day of distribution center work and sitting down behind my monitors with a good beer and doing some programming/server stuff really feels like coming home 😍.2

Let's do photorealism they said,
It'll look beautiful they said,
...
...
...
NO!
Fuck it, we're going with low poly. I'm not rendering one fucking tree, for three god damn hours!
(That's presuming that it doesn't crash during that period)
And yes I know it doesn't actually look that photorealistic, but hey, give me a break I just started. Plus I don't even wanna know how long it would take to render if it was done to look really fancy.13 -
Just got a job as a junior PHP dev. Company is really chill as long as the work gets done. I can learn a lot here, and I am doing backend stuff mostly.
Got a great PC with 2 big screens and Ubuntu freshly installed by me.
Loving it so far!4 -
When I get on a site that is like “your password must contain upper case, lower case, a number, a symbol”, at first I’m like ooook, security I guess I’ll generate a long password, but then they sit there and say “and be at least 6 but not more than 10 characters”
WTF you fuckers really don’t know anything do you.2 -
Is your 20-line long signature detailing your role, team, office location, other office locations, company division, place of birth, etc. really necessary? And on every email in the same thread?3

They really need to improve the algorithm that is searching for things in Windows Explorer. Literally:
Windows: *Searching for files in Downloads*
Me: I just typed .mp4, what is taking so long!?
Windows: *No results.*4 -
I understimate always how long tasks takes. Because of the fear that it is expected to be done quick.
I should unlearn that. And learn to communicate the time it really takes: at least doubble the amount of time of what you're thinking it takes.4 -
I really, really, fucking god damn it REALLY need to move a legacy project from the grave yard server and get it in git, and then build a dev environment for it, so I can stop making incredibly volatile changes direct to PROD (backend, frontend and DB all at once and then test it while it’s live and being used, but fuck me if I can be bothered digging through a 10GB code base and attempting to make it work in a multi-environment setup when it’s going to be a long trip down the error logs until it works again 😱🔫2

Do anyone else have major focus issues? When I'm enjoying something, I can focus completely for a long time. But when I'm miserable, 15 minutes seems to be the maximum I can focus.
It's really hard when you have long passages to read for class and are unable to focus long enough to actually absorb the material.
I really want to try ADHD medicine, but I don't want to rely on it to focus.8 -
that really killed me today when i sat in the office
how good can you rant with your colleagues? i don't think i would survive long without this kind of therapy xD2 -
On my way to my first c++ course!
Really hyped to see what they make us build!
(as long as it isn't a fucking calculator)13 -
I REALLY HATE TECHNICAL PHONE INTERVIEWS!!!
I was asked: "What are the differences between C++ and Java?"
I got a mind blank at that point... Good thing it didn't last long and I came back with a reply.
But seriously, if you can't speak English clearly, why? Why? WHY?!
(I lost a whole question because I couldn't understand the interviewer. ☹)
At least it went "well" and now I have to improve the "technical" document and do 2 tests by Monday!11 -
Not usually a person to rant about spacing and conventions but this is great.
4 devs, all using IntelliJ. Now IntelliJ auto-changes tabs to spaces which is nice, and GitHub doesn’t really care as long as the spacing is consistent. Now here is the fun part: 2 devs have 4 spaces per tab, 1 has 3 spaces, 1 has 5 spaces.
GitHub merge conflicts everyWHERE.
And yes it isn’t the old 2 vs 4 spaces. It’s 3 vs 4 vs 5 somehow6 -
I really hate to have a non-technical Scrum Master...
He makes these long meetings to explain EVERYTHING to him and ask us help to be on meetings with clients in case "he over commit us" with more work.
I've had cool Scrum Masters but not like this dude that is a pain in the ass...
PS. he's good friend of the boss... so I'm sending him videos about what his role should do 😕
PS2. Fourtunately, he's about to be switched to another project soon.5 -
Just was at the FOSDEM beer party and although it was so busy that the line to get a beer took insanely long to get shorter, I met some really cool people and it was quiet nice to be among so many people who mostly share the same mindset!
Two days to go 😁 -
Apparently USPS tracking numbers are case sensitive... I missed a delivery today so went online to check the status.
The code was RAxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxTR
x=numbers
I first typed the letters in lowercase and it said package not found...
Really???!!!!!! Don't you think all those numbers are already too long...3 -
!rant && thanksgivings.
Sure we troll here. Sure we preach strangers here. Sure we hug unconditionally here. But everything is all cool.
I haven't been here very long but I found this community very good to communicate. In fact, we are talking more than dev related things. But I literally don't see any conflict or well.. shit posts/comments.
Really thankful for that. To everyone.1 -
I'm turning 28 this year and I still feel I got a really really long way ahead in understanding Javascript and all the new web app building technologies happening.
Feeling a little frustrated for not learning faster and getting kind a stuck, I'm not getting any younger.11 -
Idiot people...
Today someone asked me how long I programmed for iOS, Told him I started really mastering iOS development since Swift was released, as I didn’t really focus on Objective C. He told me if I need any help, just ask him as he develops for iOS since two decenia... He calls himself a Senior web developer. First of all what has web development to do with iOS? And how the f*** can he program for iOS if it didn’t exist at that time.
It’s not because I’m a student I’m that thumb...
learnt the lesson not to believe everything everyone sais.9 -
I had a dream where I got a job at SpaceX. Long story short, rockets fell from the sky, people died, and Musk got really angry. I don't think I'll be applying at SpaceX anytime soon.2

*logs in to pc*

+ yeah sure...
*tries to change password*
- Your password must be different from your old 25 passwords

+ What the fuck?!? I mean, really, what the fuck is this bullshit? You force me to use EXACTLY 8 char long passwords and this? Fuck you!5 -
When you're stuck on the same error for so long, you try so many different things and by the time you get it to work, it feels like you've made so much progress. But once you take a step back you realize you really haven't done much.4

I just wrote 80+ lines of tests for a 30 line module and I was really mad at myself for wasting my time like that, until I remembered that while writing those tests I did actually catch several really tricky bugs and it didn't even take that long.5

With all the people around here ranting about their PM's, I'm really curious to see how a PMRant app would look like. What are they complaining about?
Devs that listen to music all day long and never want to be disturbed?
Engineers who talk in long, incomprehensible words?
...TDD taking too long?3 -
I love programming.. I really do.. But sometimes bugs drive me crazy... Long story short.. I'm getting a new laptop don't ask what happened to the other one2

Question:
Is it okay to be bad at JavaScript in 2018?
Really freaking hate my JavaScript skills and infinitely long list of frameworks7 -
Me: Ah, just have to finish this one small feature today and this whole massive update is done. Everyone will be off my back, things will calm down. Gonna be great.
Life: hey man, you know what I was thinking? It’s been a really long time since you had one of those vomiting bugs ... you know the gut wrenching, massive headache, can’t do anything but stare at the walls kind of flu’s?
Me: ...... eh I’m ok thanks.
Life: oh buddy you don’t understand ...... RUN!!!2 -
At a previous company we hired an 18 year old guy and father from a minority and without a high school degree. He could write enough code to get the job. However, he took 3h long lunches, came in late to work and apparently had a problem taking orders from women. At one point all the juniors got an earful because of his attitude and he got let go, not long after. It still saddens me because he could have made a really good career if wasn't for his attitude.1

In case you and your friend are bored,
Here's how to have fun :
0)Have Linux installed
1)Grab as many monitors as possible me( and my friends connected 4)
2)Open a shell
3)Drag it all the way across all your screens width (basically open a terminal of width 4 screens in my case)
4)Run "sl"
Profit.
I can't really show how it looked like because it's a long video and can't attach here
Do try it out though.9 -
Is it weird that i enjoy all these rants and the dev's frustration?
it really calms me down whenever i see a long rants, creative insults, excessive swearing
because it reminds me that my situation could be lot worse, thank god I'm not in one of those situations3 -
Apple really needs to add a "Deceased" tag to its facial recognition system, I just had a "memory" appear with a full 1:30 minute long video of my Grandmother who passed away earlier this year with "extreme" music in the background1

Got rebuked by the Java teacher today at the University for using proper long names for variables in the code. She though I was just wasting time being lazy in the lab. "If something can be achieved by a single character, why type that long variable again and again?". *Everyone in class laughs*
Then, there was an error in my code [turned out to be long long int in Java is weird], and I had no clue what was going wrong [I'm a week old in Java]. So, I had initially called her to help. She made me change all private methods and attributes to public. When asked "why?", got trolled again.
Now, I know it's okay, and not that I really care about what my classmates think of me, but getting this kind of treatment really sucks. And if this is how future software developers are crafted today, maintainability is surely going to be an issue tomorrow.
Maybe staying in this stupid country was my worst career choice. I should have tried harder and gone abroad.11 -
Project Manager and I went to a meeting with the client, and a talk started about one task which was estimated to 20, but took us 40 hours to be finished.
The client asked me:
''How is it possible that it took you double of the estimated time?''
and the PM turned his head to my direction and said:
''Really, how did it take you so long?''
ISN'T IT YOUR FUCKING JOB TO ANSWER THOSE KIND OF QUESTIONS2 -
After finishing a long and arduous refactoring I got to delete some hundreds of lines of really horrible, unmaintainable and broken legacy code. Feels absolutely great.
I love the smell of deleted code in the morning. -
Have you ever tried chatterbot library (python)?
Last day I tried to train a bot with a list conversation but no matter how long the list was , the bot was really stupid!
Do you have any idea how I can make it a bit smarter?12 -
"How much of a dev are you, if you use other peoples work and just glue it together?" I once asked a friend who really loves npm and everything.
I know about code reuse and maintainability and all that but geez we had a long discussion..😅5 -
Annoyance in C: using the same keyword for two unrelated things, process-long memory allocation and internal linkage. Looking at you, static.
The latter should really have been called "intern", just like there is "extern". Far more people would use it if it was named correctly.
History says "static" was chosen for compatibility, allowing older compilers to take new source files.2 -
My biggest regret:
To have waited so long to really start doing what I've always loved...
Now I'm 29 and back to internship :P4 -
I used to love small 12 pt fonts but recently I've really liked coding with medium sized 16-18pt fonts and it's a big difference. As long as the characters are thin (like first code light) I really quite prefer it.
Am... Am I getting old...?13 -
it wasn't really useless but i spent months of my internship making a software that was shelved because "it was taking too long to be made". half of my year in the trash4

Everyone hates CSS
I'm a full-stack dev, I was considering CSS really hard to deal with for a long time. I have some friends who are bad at design and barely know how to use CSS and hate it.
Last year, I decided to learn CSS again after 6+ years of web development.
If you are a developer but hate CSS. maybe you should give it more time and learn it the right way.30 -
I'm usually nice to people and try to look for the best in them... but this one time one of my colleagues gave me a code to review that, something about trees, can't remember, and the function was hammering the databases with 3 nested cycles, that's when I could no longer just watch. I was kinda mean on him that day, but as a result he did fix the problem and was really happy and I sensed a bit proud of himself as well.
Long story short, I believe he's not a software dev anymore. Kinda shame, I liked the guy, but he seemed enthusiastic of his new job and that is all that really matters in the end1 -
Guys do you know some good music for coding ???? I really need to inject hype or relaxation into the long long way of coding ?? If you know any good playlist in spotify for coding please say in comment
Thanks.21 -
"The client is complaining that the data takes a long time to load."
Me, after investigating: "Does the client really need [not an exaggeration, actual figures] 130,000 rows of data?"
"I will show them these stats but they said they need it"8 -
The best part about being a junior developer is meeting veteran developers.
For example, my friend's father is an old world Linux guru. I've known him for a really long time, but never understood why he lived in a mansion.
Every time I see him now I make a point to bring up some small Linux thought. He always responds with some ridiculous history lesson about the origin of a command or how he still uses a regex alias he wrote 15 years ago.2 -

Hey all... I have a question...
So, I m really burnt out of coding (C++ guy here)... I have always been learning something but never built anything... I really wanna make some game or something but it jst takes soooo long... M really lacking motivation and m soooo through learning stuff for now...
Please suggest what do i do? (Cant change language... I find all others boring... No offense)12 -
My strategy is really really dumb. I go outside and smoke... ive done this for so long that im now at the point that im terrified that if i stop smoking i wont get unstuck. pathetic isnt it?3

When you start a new job as the only iOS Software Engineer, and after 3 weeks your boss constantly asks “well, how long is that going to take?” ...
I really wish my response could be “as long as it takes you to find another iOS Engineer for me to work with” 🤬1 -
Are you ready for the only really useful advice on devRant that is not judgmental, simple, and instantly applicable?
Here it goes. If you have hiccups,
1. Inhale your full lungs until you can’t inhale anymore
2. Hold your breath as long as you can
3. Exhale carefully
This will “reboot” your breath cycle, and that conflict between breathing and other things that causes hiccups will go away.
Repeat if needed. Breathe slowly and carefully after you finally exhale.5 -
Not happy about the modern wave of apps producing really long file name suffixes rather than trying to stick to just 3. For example .afphoto. It doesn't appeal to my OCD nature.3

For the first time ever, I’m writing an academic paper while worrying it will be too long, as opposed to being too short. The difference with this paper is that it’s on something I’m passionate about. I’m having fun writing this one - I’m getting paid to do something that doesn’t feel like work. It really makes me think about what job I want to get after college. I understand it’s possible to work without feeling like you’re working, and that’s something I really want.10

Sometimes, usually during the evening, I lower the lights in the living room, put some of my greatest Scotch in a glass, and stare at this fine and beautiful piece of code I wrote a long time ago that I am really proud of.7

Me: I majored in Computer Science & Engineering
Someone: Are you the eldest son of your parents?
Me: Yes, why? and How did you know?
Someone: Your parents must have forced you to study CSE, right?
Me: No! They never forced me! I chose CSE by myself, because I loved science & technologies
( and a long boring conversation between me and someone, which is not that important )
In my country, usually parents force their children to become something they want ( Though, my mom still says from time to time, "I really wished, one of children to be a Doctor", as my siblings are also not interested to become Doctor :/ ), but my parents never really forced me anything like that, which I'm really thankful for.5 -
Music. Music teaches you numbers, creativity, patterns, structure, and basically primes your brain for math and creativity in that space. In addition, it teaches you how to think both within a structure and outside the box, as well as the importance of repetition, memorization, and learning a new language.
Music really was my second language, and the ability to read/write it fluently is a skill that takes a long time to master. I really believe that it increases your brain plasticity so much.4 -
Forgot to change code in my api for rate limiting, after development. No unit tests.. because who really needs that right? 🤦♂️🙅♂️🤷♂️lolololol
Long story short, API went to production eventually, and stopped working almost immediately. Rate limiting was set for 2000 requests in a 1 hour time period. Not my finest moment.. fml 🤦♂️ -
That was the first time an image didn't contain the searched for term, so I never read the text "press skip [...]" and really tired me, tried to find a bridge for too long2

Blizzard.
I’ve been a huge fan of pretty much every blizzard franchise for a long long time.
However recently the companies attitude towards its customers has reached breaking point, insert “you think you do but you don’t “ & “don’t you guys have phones?”.
They’re unfortunately driving many of their franchises into the ground at the moment and at their current trajectory I can see a really bad fall coming.
A lot of gaming companies need to really listen to their communities and stop this micro transaction Armageddon that’s happening just now.9 -
Any Haskell programmers here?
I started to learn this language for fun two days ago and so far I find it absolutely amazing and really different to OOP languages. Most of the time the solutions make so much sense, but actually coding them requires really abstract thinking of the problem. How fast did you learn Haskell? How long it took you do code it comfortably? Any advises you can give me? I work mainly through a uni exercise sheet from a friend from a different uni, and the rest is hoogle and google :P10 -
I can't stand talking to clients on the phone!
One of my first freelancing clients used to talk to me for an hour at a time. I really wish I could have billed him by the hour, it took him twice as long to explain anything and then I'd have to get back in the mindset for what I was working on. The phone is just so disruptive.
I'm so much happier working for a company where the project manager deals with the client's and product managers.2 -
Anyone else here typed a really long post about some fuck up, only to delete it because it's not worth it to get so upset?1

TLDR I messed up my partitions!
I had on old netbook with Windows on it, it was getting painfully slow. So I thought, why not try dual boot?
Since I had never installed a GNU/Linux OS before, I messed up the partition. Like, really, really badly.
Somehow, i accidentally created like a 100 1kb partitions. Windows wouldn't boot, no other OS was present. Shit had started to hit the fan.
Turns out there was this easeUS partition manager, that you could make a bootable USB with it. So I did that, deleted all partitions, created new one, installed Linux Mint on it. I've done a lot of other shit like this, but this rant is getting too damn long. -
Being away from my PC for a long time makes me think of stupid but concerning questions that others seems to care less about.
"Is the term 'spicy' really a flavor? or a sensation?" Some would argue that it's a form of allergic reaction tolerance.6 -
computers are really expensive around here, so I've been using the same laptop for 6 years. a couple months ago it perished (rip).
me and my bf got all new parts and made a reasonably priced pc. it's been the first in a really long time that i enjoyed using a computer lol. it's a huge difference in my mindset knowing things won't take 3 min to load and that it won't crash every 2 secs11 -
My dad just thought I'd grow out of my "gaming and PC 24/7" phase and didn't really care about the Tech. But when I started studying to be a dev he gave full support. "Do anything you like except ride motorbikes, do drugs or be a sailor, so long as you can sustain yourself" was the message carried across generally.1

I really, but really hate popup windows on web. I just came to your website and you want my email? By hiding all the content with large popup? NO WAY. And it is not less annoying when in the middle of an article the popup jumps out at me.
Good news, google is finally going to put websites with popups below others on organic search. I hope people will finally stop placing popups on their website.
Sorry for long post. -
Does anyone use a particular reminder to remember to take breaks from their computer?
I'm noticing when I spend a lot of time looking at my computer screen, my eyes will get really tired and it'll be almost impossible to continue looking at a screen. However, when I am not looking at the computer screen all day long and the amount of time is spread throughout the day, my eyes are fine.
So I'm looking for something to remind me to keep taking breaks so that my eyes are rested all day long.
*I do have a blue light filter on 24/7*7 -
Long story short, I have to drop my studies for now bc serious mental health issues. I feel like a failure, but I mean, I actually attempted to.... well, I'm here to say it and not complete the phrase. I need to rebuild a lot. And I would really to make some friends are. I have no one to talk to.13
-
Is there a relation with bad long term memory and programmers?
Most really good programmers I know don't have great memeory10 -
I really love Mr Robot.
The show though... not the guy...
But there's one thing that bugs me since the beginning:
For security reasons Elliot destroys all his drives and puts his RAM into the microwave which of course is effective but why would you even consider frying volatile memory?
Sure... the data can remain for some time but not that long that he would risk anything...
Any ideas?
Oh and btw... SEASON 3 IS NOT THE END??? LIKE WHAAAAAT?4 -
However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...
Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5 -
We are a small company, and our CEO and CTO attends our daily standups(not sure why)
At the end our CTO, after a little discission with our PM, goes: “This” is more importent and should be gone first - its money to the company.
Pm: Fine but then “that” wont be worked on for now.
Cto: ohh okay, but “this” is really importent, so do it first.
Standup done, people returns to work.
1 minut later, Cto comes into the dev room.
Cto: “something else” is also really really importent.
Pm: ok, so then we do “something else” instead and we will put “this” on standby for now.
Cto: and remember “operation” has the highest priority of all.
For fuck sake... just pick one or decide what it is you want....
Cto has no clue to what he is doing. Does not have a long term plan, other then get money into the company based on really short term goals.
Easy to say im not his biggest fan, and I am a 100% sure he knows this.5 -
“Free? Must be trash.”
“Pay for it? Psss yeah right. I’m sure there’s a free version.”
“Wait... really really expensive and a really really long line and a chance I won’t even be allowed to buy it? I’m am so there.”
- everyone but me?8 -
The older I get and the more perspective I have on my career, the more I cringe at the times I thought I was awesome but I really wasn’t, especially in the eyes of or in comparison to others I’ve worked with who were much better at this than I am. In that respect, I have very few stories that _aren’t_ embarrassing. I sometimes wonder how I managed to stay employed this long. And whether any stories here on DevRant are about me.

I'd like to give a shoutout to the best tool I ever had when I worked in hardware and had to troubleshoot ethernet. The "RLFLTWKW". (The Really Long Fly Lead That We Know Works)
My friend that I worked with long ago just dug it out of a drawer and sent me a photo so we could remember the days when trying to figure out why Mavis couldn't get on the network anymore could be resolved by our faithful friend "TRLFLTWKW". I miss you buddy. You made life so much better.
I wish I had an equivalent to you for coding. -
Well thus far is a bunch of rails small jobs. Funny enough this week I managed to get a bunch of php contracts "with the possibility to extend for larger contracts"
I am not really interested in long term contracts, but being that most developers that I see hired for small php jobs are not used to the patterns of development used for modern php and that i bring in a lot of my own stuff for it I know that I will be maintaining them for the long run.
So good stuff. Lets see how the week pans out. Getting really excited. Even tho I see more horrors in php than even on JS or ASP.NET or Java I still really love all languages that I have used. And normally I work like a mechanic. In which I bill by the hour(i am an expensice hooker...I mean developer) and finish everything as fast as possible to let me lazy around the house. So for example, if something takes 10 hours I will do it i 5 or less and charge all 10 hours, or I would charge per build(custom login and registration that kind of deal) and yeah. Pretty basic.
Good shit man!1 -

I know it's not that impressive in the dev world, but I'm finally making six figures (the lowest six figure value possible but STILL) and I can't really brag to my friends about dollar amounts so HURRAH. Accepted the offer yesterday, and I'm quite pleased about it.
Annoyed that it took so long (I'm 29), but I did have a two year long career break for a family medical issue/travel/quarter life crisis, so so it goes.10 -
give up on working hard
doesn't mean shit in the long run
it only matters who you can bullshit and how much money they have
*really* i mean this
at this point i've seen it so many times, and i thought the world couldn't be this dumb... but somehow that's really how it all works, there's really no secret
much better to just have had internship at some silicon valley company - their for loops, functional code, and abstracted classes are far better than the ones anywhere else, don't you know?
just wish the world would grow the fuck up, but alas, they have to remain wimpy kiddy caveman mentality style5 -
How do you guys deal with work that doesnt really care about what you do?
I mean everyday i come to work i make my own schedule and think of things to do, then do them and at the end of the day noone really cares.
I’ve created a huge inhouse analysis tool and that was my job for a long while untill the project was mostly done. Now it feels like i just go to work to sit there for the hours and collect the paycheck, i watch youtube for half of the day and noone cares. Noone really knows what i do there. I feel like shit because i need to fight with myself everyday that i didnt finish something, but noone besides me really even knows of what i do though. I work alone and I think thats a big part of it. What should I do?3 -
I would say my biggest insecurity is not getting (enough) useful straightforward feedback from my boss about how I work.
I have a tendency to take a bit longer than others, but deliver code that rarely has to be fixed.
Some of it may appear overengineered but it really isn't... I just like it clean and not hacky.
There are times my boss seems like telling me subconciously that I take too long for my stuff, but then again, he is really happy when we deliver a big thing to a customer and it just works, without any bugs or negative feedback.
It sometimes drives me nuts. 😅2 -
Okay ... Windows, I really tried to be nice, but that's it. You get off my ssd right now ...
Just got the error: "filename is too long - unable to delete file" (full name incl. path)
Seriously, WHY?
I mean, sure ... Long file paths/names are a thing and this is why there are limitations. I am totally fine with it!
But Why the hell allows windows you to create those files if it is unable to delete these files later ...
I don't get it. Maybe I am just hit my head to hard as a child and someone may enlighten me ...
PS: windows was running in a VM to give it a real serious try after years on Linux4 -
Pm: Hey we need you to add this feature to client ABC and we need it in 3 weeks.

Had a teacher in high school who ordered us to learn MS Access, even tho most of us already knew MySQL... It was to learn about relations and the likes...
We spend way to long on that subject, because most of really didn't find the Access interface intuitive and she had to walk from table to table helping...
The only two finished the task where those who say screw it and used MySQL 😅 -
I suck doing frontend development. I'm slow, and I usually struggle to obtain the results I'm looking for... but today I'm happy because I almost finished the website for one of my side projects:
https://www.avatar-cli.dev
I'm going out of a long depression, and seeing things done is really helping me to improve my mood and have more energy.
By the way, thanks to the https://getzola.org project, it would have been impossible to me without it.9 -
In the before times of 2019, one of the guys in the office had this habit of sucking his teeth after lunch.
I can hardly describe it. Imagine making kissy sounds but with your tongue and teeth. Did this almost every day from 1-2.
Probably happened every 1-2 minutes. So just long enough to get back into the swing and boom *thick*.
I just invested in some really nice headphones eventually.2 -
Apparently people hate meetings and I never really got why but we had a 5 hour long meeting on monday so .. i get it ..2

I want to learn C++. I know C#, Java and Ruby. Should I go Directly, or there is some sort of path?
How long it takes to master it? I am a quick learner, I catch things a lot faster.
What impact it has on my skills?
Is it really a nightmare to learn?8 -
Nope,
Far too in love with myself to have any sort of insecurities.
Not that there is anything wrong with having them, we are all different. I just believe that insecurities come from giving other people far too much power over ourselves. And I just couldn't care less what people say about me, as long as it IS about me. See?
The more confidence you project the more attention you will get, be it good or bad, it doesn't matter since it is the only way to go up in your workplace. Having a personality besides "ZOmG cOde Is LiFE" really goes a long way also.
So yall cheer the fuck up, its just code.7 -
Not sure if a rant but.
How many of you guys gets so bored durning meetings on all the none important stuff or not related to you that you just start codeing instead?
I have these hours long meetings with analist that can talk calculations all dat long, how usefull they are, wich analyses you can do for them. I really don't care. Just tell me the formula and I will make it. Do not care whether A is voltage or the amount of pink clouds on sunday.3 -
Hey just noticed the app updated... Looks like a pretty big change but pretty nice. one thing though was wondering. How does it decide the length to show?
I see some posts are really long but others are shorter and get the Read More cutoff15 -
Gotta learn myself through vim and tmux because I have no choice. My laptop burst and all I have is a Raspberry Pi with Raspbian core + MATE DE installed. Don't really wanna use heavy stuff with it because it'll become really snappy.
Oh well, as long as I can code.9 -
As long as there's good documentation, and is relatively speedy, I really don't give a fuck what language/tech I'm using.5

DAMNIT. I love Netflix, I do, but if you want to really stop the illegal downloading in the long term then don't remove series or movies I'm watching.
I get it, it's these big companies pulling their content but it's just so backwards.
Happy new year!5 -
I get really angry when my friend (has only ever taken a web design class in high school that taught only basic html) tries to preach to me that you shouldn't have to worry about writing readable code along with documenting it so long as it works the way you want it to.1
-
I don't know if this is really much of a rant
So I fixed a huge bug in a standalone tool I'm writing for my team. Took care of some personal stuff, i.e arranged a long weekend away, booked leave for that, arranged a dentist appointment, felt so productive. Ready to go home, looked at time, 10:00...
Fuuuuuuuuuuu- -
Boss: I'm not seeing the fix for the simple text change issue
Me: (who cares about little design details which said boss really likes about me) That simple text change is a long line of text and breaks on all screen sizes besides your big ass monitor, so I asked for a designers opinion, which I finally got today.
My bad for caring just a little bit... -
Another project, another team, another shitshow in codebase.
Now instead of doing work and implementing long awaited features... few weeks of minor refactorings ahead, untangling unnecessary complexities...
... but mostly - explaining the team why their 12-months work is pile of shitty spaghetti, and how it should really be done.
Explaining basics to "seniors" is the most exhausting thing.3 -
I'm really pissed. The kitchen builder doesn't trust my measurements, which is fine. Appointment with their specialist was an hour ago. Architect is on vacation and it was discussed last week that we can enter the construction side and the kitchen. No builder wanted to open the door for us! Even after talking to them. I had to phone the architect, this took so long. The measure specialist didn't want to wait, which I understand. I hate people, they always make things complicated. I really hate people! Sorry that this is none dev related

Ok so some of you have probably seen my previous rants about my computer science teacher and our project but I'm just going to summarize all of them and share with you more of my pain.
1. He edits in the production environment. Its a laravel project and he is creating test database migrations IN THE PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT AND SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH FROM MASTER AND DEV.
2. He edits in vim and doesn't follow codestyle even though I printed him off a piece of paper and emailed it to him.
3. He doesn't have any ethic when it comes to more complex things like laravel homestead.
4. He doesnt want me to release features even though he takes really long to do them.
While I love vim and it is my editor of choice, some things should be done in an ide. This is really annoying me and I'm really just considering handing him the project if he can't follow basic outline.6 -
I usually never put stickers on my laptop, as they usually fade away and leave nasty residue after a while, therefore I fucking hate having discovered stickermule, I have right now ~100$ worth of stickers favorited, I really have to hold back to not just pull the trigger on them and finally smash my laptop full of them, including my devrant stickers, that have been laying here for a long time now. 😫1

After a long day of project management and endless emails, I would go home and dig through books and online training programs on html and css. A few weeks later I really found that enjoyed the work.
A year later I took the leap, quit my job and went back to school. Great decision. -
I used to play games a lot, I had good grades at school which could make me a doctor or scientist. But my interest has always been leaning towards computers and my parents didn't really liked it. When I was having dilemmas about which path to choose for my career, parents told me, choose anything you want as long as it's not about computers. So immediately I know what I want to be...
-
https://hotpot.ai/art-maker
playing around with this is so captivating. that it doesn't really work well and you have to "optimize" your input makes it even more interesting. but when you use it too long, it starts messing with your brain and you start questioning your own perception of reality. what are "things" anyway xD
would be nice if dall-e 2 (which seems to actually work really well) was available to the public soon.. also, i want this for 3D structures, animations & games mechanics, imagine the fantastic uncanney valleys that would open up ^^4 -
The school I went to, and this was really the only benefit of the school, gave all it students lifetime memberships to digital tutors, which was bought out by pluralsight, which then bought code School. So I basically got free membership to three different sites, all of which have a good amount of technical training with videos, guides, and work along lessons on them.
For what school cost to me, it will have paid for itself as long as I live for another Thousand Years.1 -
Been a really long time since I posted on here. Sucks when you get stuck in a lab that bans cellphones.
BUT I got a new job now. No classified stuff. I can actually talk about what I do specifically now!!! And after a week I can almost maybe do my job one day.7 -
I got a question at an interview today asking what type of developer do you want to be and what's your long term technical goal. Right now I'm a senior software engineer at a pretty well known solid mid sized tech company. I work across the stack but I really don't know what type of developer I want to be.
Which way technically are you directing your engineering career? How and why did you decide this is the type of work you want to do?6 -

Hey guys, i joined a new company a week ago. In the offer letter they mentioned the working hours from 9:30pm to 6:30pm but today an HR told me to be online till 7:30pm. I refused. Guys i really cant sit for so long in front of the computer. 9:30 to 6:30 is a good time, but i cant sit for more than that. Also after 6:30 i meet my friends everyday. I dont know what to say to them the next time they ask me to sit for so long. If they want employees to sit for so long then why dont they mention it on offer letter?8

I have a medical condition where my palms sweat too much. I can't use touchscreens for a very long time. I really hope there is a product that makes touchscreens hyper sweat friendly. It's annoying and embarrassing. :/4

Erm not sure if this qualifies. Not so long ago I was tackled with having to read a device memory at a very high address in 32-bit linux process (kernel is 64). The 32-bit mmap is unfortunately limited to range of protected mode PAE so it just wouldnt reach that high. So! I wrote my own syscall in assembly that would switch to long mode first so I could use long registers and then I got my page and switched back :)
In retrospective not a big deal, but it made me really happy for the rest of the day when I saw that address in pmap :)1 -
Am i the only one who really wants a chat and follow option on DevRant?

As part of my engineering apprenticeship, I was sent to work on a train depot. One day, a mentor of mine called me over and said "Kid - can you go and see Mr so & so and ask him for a long weight?"
I, without thinking about it - went all the way across the depot found the gent and asked him for a long weight. He looked at me, a little bemused - and asked me if I knew what the weight looked like. I said no. He continued to inquire about this weight - it went on for a few minutes until I realised my stupidity. There is no such thing as a long weight - only a long wait.
Needless to say my mentor had a huge laugh together with his mates at my foolishness.
Sometimes things really are quite simple. -
I once worked at a really messy project that is best described as one gigant big bug. The CEO asked me how long it would take to fix it. At that point nobody knew since the code was a mess and new directives came all the time. So I answered that I sincerely didn't know. He responded angered with "How couldn't you know. When I read a book I know exactly how long it takes."... I quit3

My father. It's thanks to him that I knew how to use a computer before I knew coherent speech. He's also the one who introduced me to linux long before my peers had even heard of it. Even now, he's the one I go to if I'm really lost for answers in anything related to computers. Like, when even StackOverflow fails me. 😱2

For the first time in a very long time, I am out of a software engineering job. I have no idea why I am handling this so well. I literally have no idea if I will get another job or not but for this month, I am working on myself and learning more on FP which is really fun btw. Is this maturity?9

Left what I like doing the most, i.e. Coding, R&D stuff and started studying German trying to travel and continue my studies there. Really frustrating to do a task you don't love continously without breaks lol. Anyway yesterday opened up my gaming rig. started steam. opened Path of exile to play after a really long time. 17 GIG UPDATE. quietly closes pc. starts crying in a corner.4
-
unpopular opinion: maybe updates would take under <super long time that's overblown> if you did it more often. Also defrag your standard HDDs like every month (weekly if you really want the performance boost)8
-
Without a break this would probably be around 4 hours. After that I just loose all productivity. So there so is really no point in forcing it any further.
For working without sleep I have regular done stretches as long as 32 hours. With just breaks for food and a quick walk around. To keep my body awake.
Why you probably ask yourself, well this has several reasons. For me to get in the "zone" I have to be awake for at least 12 hours. I'm not sure why this is, but the combination of being too tired to get distracted and the increase in dopamine from sleep deprivation. Is I think what makes for this, or by now it might just be a placebo. But well it works for me.
So when a deadline gets near and I'm not going to be able to make it, which used to happen a lot because I used to have a lot of migraines. I would start working in the morning, trying to get things done but not being to able to. Then after a full workday would take a dinner break and get back in the office, at this point I get in the zone and time flies by as I work through the night. Next morning people are coming back in the office and I start another workday.
I try to plan this so I have a lot of meetings or other social work. I get really social and chatty after being awake for more then 24 hours. Because my problem solving skills have really declined after being awake for so long.
Now when I still used to drink, I would after this workday get some dinner and go out to a bar to have drinks with friends. To celebrate me having made my deadline and well I'm really social from being awake so long. And I stop overthinking everything.
Still looking for a way to get in the zone before being awake for so long, so any tips are welcome! -
So, it was kinda a reversed effect?
My parents didn't give me access to computer for a long time, the only option was to play games with my dad. I also didn't have a phone for a quite long. And, when I see what is happening today with the kids that get their first own phone/tablet at age of 4, I am really happy about it.
But, somehow, that made me really interested in what runs all the squares on the screen etc. When I convinced my parents to give me my first laptop — to play Minecraft with classmates — almost the first thing I did after installing the game was searching "how to make a website". I played with some shitty builders, then I discovered HTML (which was :o for me then). Small steps into PHP, then some JS. I really enjoyed it, but PHP gave me headache each time I wrote something bigger (I was writing a super spaghetti code then, I was inexperienced), so I thought of trying something else...
Minecraft plugins!
I fallen in love with Java.
And after that the real journey began.5 -
For anyone following, I broke my E key on my laptop keyboard. I ordered a new one and it should arrive tomorrow. I am going to be able to type else and exeception properly after a really long time!2

"Can you go through this hours-long process to reproduce an issue i saw and debug it? I don't have bandwidth."
"Sure, but I'm pretty sure the issue is actually due to your recent changes in [related feature], and I'm pretty busy myself."
"No, that's not how that works. Please figure out the real issue." (Strongly implying it was my fault)
*Goes through hours-long process to reproduce* (yes this procedure could be improved but this is a rant not a planning meeting)
*Of course, it was his change*
"Oh. Well, it's not really a priority." -
Hey guys! I've just written Part 1 of a post on Privacy and how we're tracked these days. It's intended more for those who don't know about the issue or would like to learn more. Part 1 is mostly a long overview of the kinds of things that happen these days in regards to privacy and tracking.

I'd be honored if you read it. I also welcome any feedback as I'm not really a writer. Currently I want to figure out some formatting on the site to make the long posts like this one a bit more readable.13 -
Uuhhh currently installing Arch Linux on my desktop, because fedora had such a long boot time... But it is really frustrating to install all the stuff with a 1.8 Mbit/s internet connection😩4

I cycle between games I play. I am now back to Minecraft. Playing FTB OceanBlock. It is progression lite. Less of a grind with short and long term rewards. It is like a skyblock, but you can start on an actual island. I am really enjoying the mods FTB developed just for this modpack. The modpack has plenty of tech in it to satisfy my need to build something purely for fun.5

To create a really amazing OSS, I don't even care if anyone uses it or if it becomes popular or anything, I just want to do it to prove to myself that I don't need to get paid to write good code, I can do it to make the world a better place too.
This has really been my main goal for a long time now, sure I've written some a few OSS but I don't consider them up to that standard yet, but I am working on something right now that will get close if I ever manage to finish it and if it is well written. -
Want to ask on how you guys overcame your burnout from coding, i think its been so long since i really got into coding like i used to before.13
-
Nearing the end of the year, and all I'm thinking is that I'm just making bad decisions left and right. And these are like long term decisions, that don't show results until much later.
It's making me really depressed and it's not good.
There are a bunch of should haves all littered throughout the past 3 months and it's really fucking with me.2 -
Silence and an interesting project go a long way. If I'm really interested in a project that means I'll spend hours a day (even when I don't have them) working on it, and incidentally, procrastinating on other things.
-
After all this time, I've finally managed to apply my programming skills in my day situation (thing I really wanted to happen).
A website had a block of text reeeally long and I couldn't select it all. Grabbed my terminal, opened vim and did a program to grab that block of text and save it into a file. Ran it and worked perfectly. I mean, isn't the best thing I've ever done but I feel very proud of myself. :) -
Career fair update:
At the fair I bee-lined right to a company I'd talked to at a hackathon before. The person I talked to there was extremely enthusiastic, and called me a "really strong candidate," and even talked about providing housing for the summer near the workplace!
I'm contrast, AMD's interviewer looked extremely uninterested. Pretty sure they just grabbed some random engineer who didn't want to be there.
Microsoft had a line so long that the fair ended before most of the people even got to talk to Microsoft. Needless to say, I didn't even bother.
Qualcomm seemed cool, that went alright.
Overall, really happy with how the fair turned out, and really excited with how likely this job looks for me.1 -
So its been around a month since I started my internship in this company. Seriously hating it. Most of the people are nice enough..but the work though..I get that since you're not really an IT company then theres no coding and stuff, sure. So, you put me in this 'IT related department' where I basically can't do anything other than be useless until you have documents for me to edit. Really?? The least you can do is just give me something challenging to work with but noooo just copy paste that stuff and change the damn fonts. "Oh you're done already? Pretty fast" well how long do you expect me to do this thing?? The only reason why it would take me a whole day to edit stuff is because your laptop's Word literally restarts itself every minute!!! How the @#$/# do you do anything with this?!!
//its gonna be a long 7 months....9 -
I really hate being treated like a junior noob based on years of experience and timidity.
It's not because I don't express myself often that I know nothing. It's not because I haven't been working for long that I don't know sh*t.
People sometimes..1 -
Hi nerds :D This is my first post and I'm really excited that i found this community :) I will stay there for a long time :D3

Been using linux for long time and now moving to mac. I must say I really miss windows blue screen 🤧4

I'm at my first Hackathon. It's awesome and we're on the final day of a long 3 days!
We're designing an app to encourage sharing transport to and from major events (music, sports, etc).
We have a quick 5 minute survey
https://surveymonkey.co.uk/r/.... It would really help our chances today at the final presentation!
(I'm sorry for abusing this medium, this is an awesome community of people and it would be awesome to have your support on this!)10 -
4 really basic questions. Things you can't get through 1st year undergrad without knowing. One was testing you understand references, one testing understanding of inheritance, then exception handling... Then a bit of a tricky one: what happens when you query 2 tables in sql without a join. That took me a second because it's just not something I'm used to doing.
So yeah it's pretty basic stuff. At this point I was used to writing fairly long code snippets and quizzes with lots of gotchas that make the interviewers feel really smart. I think "ok they basically want to make sure I'm not totally useless and they're fine with training me". But noooooo. Being able to answer all that correctly is really impressive. That's never happened before. I'm a fucking prodigy.
So I got the job and I alternate between thinking I'm in Idiocracy and thinking the reception I get is some sort of elaborate joke -
Those feels when you are waiting for a call or an email about a job you really really want and it's friday and you know it isn't gonna happen untill monday. Weekend suddenly feels too long.

What Linux distros do you use and how stable are they ?
I'm currently running antergos, but it's really not working out. I'm looking for something that is more or less stable in the long run (something that doesn't require me to reinstall the whole f-ing OS every other day)13 -
I have been an android developer since long time, yet android migrate everything from Java to Kotlin
But am really worried to migrate everything from Java to Kotlin or begin this phase can you please help and tell me where is the best way to learn kotlin and get easily adapted3 -
I can't really figure out how I grew from learning_syntax -> remembering_function_names -> following_patterns -> developing_a_personal_style -> reading_the_doc -> getting_the_source.
Well I have a long memory problem, so I guess it happened overnight!
Wait, did the doctor say it was a memory problem? Hell no! -
Hey, I asked a similar question some weeks ago and couldn't manage to find a solution to my problem.
I run Debian with i3-wm.
Some applications, e.g. file-roller, menulibre, need really long to start, up to half a minute.
Has anyone of you had something similar, or knows what may cause this ?1 -
Hello dear fellow programmers,
Lately I'm faced with an issue: i can't code. It takes me a really long time to get my codeengine running and it stops on the first occasion, it either be a cigarette pause, a question from a coworker or what ever.
I love code and I have a blast when I start but I have a hard time starting it.
What to do? I'm a bit at a loss here1 -
At the end of the day...does the end consumer REALLY give a shit about what language you program in? As long as the app fucking does what it's supposed to right? I feel like this is a never ending rant for me because it seems like programmers will never understand that it doesn't matter as long as the end consumer / client is happy.2

Not using all my time. I really don’t apply myself sometimes. Sometimes that means not using work time efficiently, sometimes that means I get stuck on a simple problem for too long because I don’t think through it. Also, I’m trying to love coding more. It takes a lot of code to get a small result sometimes, and that’s ok. I got hooked on being able to do big things with little code from the start. As we get better we know there’s more that can be done, but we are more familiar with just how much work it really is. At the same time we are more capable than ever of doing it. Just gotta embrace the suck, then love your finished product.1

The position in the company i started working for not long ago was for a dotnet developer. But it ended being heavy sharepoint focused and mostly front end javascript (that i am not very good at, that's why i wanted backend), doing stuff like hide this button, css that input etc. Really confused now and wondering how much il learn from this job considering its my first job as a developer and that i really want to do mvc with dotnet core. 😐😐 Does this have any value or i shouldn't be so picky for a first developer job?1

Studying mathematics, which in fact I consider as the most effective mind practice for a developer, even if you won't utilize some concepts directly in programming.
And also wandering around and walking long distances, probably because I really like to talk to think loud 😄 and it's less weird when you're just passing by. Anyway I enjoy it personally. -
Just realized that it’s been a long time since I had to deal with collections that contain values of different types and that ugly type checks that come with it when you need to do something with the values.
Sum types are really a blessing. -

oh yeah and by the way got a new project out3 -
I don't really remember... That can mean one of two things... It was to long ago... Or don't know how to do it yet... I do remember my first programming class, when my teacher said, "you just need to do a printf ..." And I asked, "what is that?" He looks at me, eyes wide open, for a huge amount of time, and then left without answering...
a side note, it was university class.1 -
The project I have been working on was growing and growing and growing... It reached it a point where the front-end was really hard to maintain. The worst part was the communication protocol, we were using JSON to serialize really complex objects.
I took some initiative and suggested that we use protobuf instead of JSON. Long story short, data usage is 10% of what it used to be, serialization and deserialzation is much faster, and the best of all, everything is strongly typed, with auto generated classes. Fucking awesome!1 -
¿Does it really takes that long to merge a branch when there is a conflict?
My "PM" takes like 20 minutes to fucking merge a branch that has a few lines of conflict... and I fucking hate to wait so long to continue on a ticket where I need previous work... I'm a JR full stack developer and I'm new to devRant... It was love at first sight.1 -
Long one
So our newest team-mate has made a channel dedicated to make fun of or scrum master, then I send him a pm saying to cut out the childs play, and we need to act professional.
Then he tells me that our scrum master is okay with it, and really looks like he is!
SM said this making jokes about him brings the whole team together and makes us a better team!!
WTF...
Really WTF ... am I the bad guy for caring about my team??3 -

3 or 4 weeks ago me and management had a talk about new features in our product...
So we implemented the new features and then we released the app...
Today I got a really long bug report that summarizes into the following sentence -> BUG: Everything works exactly as we talked 4 weeks ago.... And apparently that is bad 😣
Like c'mon dudes if now it is a bug then why the fuck I needed to code that feature?! Time totally wasted for nothing! 😤
Fix My Lighthouse!1 -
Today I (/ later together with some colleagues) spent almost 4 hours trying to improve a Entity Framework LINQ to SQL query.
The initial problem was, that one of our List API endpoints took longer the more you "page" (besides the long response time it had anyways).
So after
- brainstorming in the team
- brainstorming alone
- hacking around and
- shouting at screens
- googling
we
- got nothing optimized
- got confused about what EF does
- lost the believe in our development skills
So Entity Framework is really a nice thing. But as soon as you look deeper, trying to figure out what it really does between ToList() and "yeah my data arrived" it is just....demonic.3 -
I've been using Linux for so long I've become completely unimpressed by Windows. Yeah I use it for work but even that might not be for much longer if I can help it. Pop OS from System 76 supports Actjve Directory out the box now, so I'll see how that goes. But really and truly I can't say I'm surprised Windows 11 either can't run on a spec'd out gaming PC or is turning your 2019 Dell into a toaster oven 🤔.8

Sitting and waiting for my programming paradigms lab... feeling really anxious...

every time someone says sustainable I flinch and have to re-process what I just heard

I know it has an actual meaning but it's been used stupidly for so long I can't untrain it from my connotations to Marxism / theft
I do find it really funny that now disinformation went from smearing people for not towing to some authoritarian line to calling out the smearing people though4 -
its the freakini weekend and i have to fix Wine (well, really i just have to reinstall Battle.net launcher app) every time I want to play Hearthstone... gonna be a long weekend.3

I figured out how to skip 2 months of development so we could launch Long ahead of schedule.
Question is should I tell them or do it? I don't feel like it really as I've been treated like shit and am looking for a New job.
It will take the stress off collegues, perhaps as a goodbye gift when I leave I'll put it on a thumb drive and give it if I feel bad.2 -
I'm about to start learning Android development. First it's the obligatory Get Started, then a couple of Udemy courses. After doing javascript for so long, i think it'll be nice to use a strongly typed language again (Java is my first language; college you know).
But, I'm REALLY not looking forward to Gradle wasting my time--it took two minutes to even start up the IDE for the initial project.
Ah well, nothing's perfect3 -
I was on my fifth year of college (Economics & Business) when I decided that's not what I wanna do in life. So I started to learn programming from online tutorials and had huge help from my bf. Now I have a job where I get to code and learn even more. Still have a long way to go though, but I'm really excited about it.
To bad I wasted five years of my life on Economics 😅 -
"Don't look down" is good programming advice. Do you really want to know why the engineer that has been here for three years is shaking constantly and always irritable? It's because he knows that beneath the surface it's all held together with toothpicks and glue. Stay blissfully unaware for as long as possible.

>= rant
While its really hard to get code wrong in Rust, it is also really hard to get code right in Rust. It took me a considerably long time to write a code which returns the first word in the sentence
I felt the borrow checker introduces a steep learning curve into Rust which is otherwise a beautiful language according to me. C++, my current favorite language, also suffers the same problem with respect to certain language features.3 -
I can't use this keyboard to program:
Got a transparent touch LED keyboard because I thought it was cool, turns out the lazy chinese programmers have used a really long debounce time of ~100ms in its firmware to prevent duplicate keystroke detection.
Which means, I can't type as fast as I want on this thing! 😭 -
A few times per week, I get inspired and think up some projects that would be really cool to build.
But then by the time I get home, all I want to do is get some rest from a long day at work. So the list of side-projects grows.
How do you guys find time to actually get anything done outside of work?1 -
Applying for graduate software developer roles and it really pisses me off that most of these applications require you to first upload your CV and then ask you to create a CV on their website again. What the fuck? The only thing you need to evaluate me is my CV and my github link. I don't want to fill in a 1 hour fucking long form. It doesn't make any sense.1

I hope people who store data in unstructured binary format without documenting what the the actual logic is have a separate room in hell.
I hate this legacy s***pile of visual basic code that has this abbreviated function names everywhere and the 'developer' (really should be name jack***) instead of documenting his custom solutions just thought out some custom data formats and wrote really long and bad code around it to transform and decode it. Clr sql makes it impossible to debug so wherever you are my dear predecessor I hipe you rot in hell2 -
So it's been a month since I quit my job (cause I want to transition completely into ML, and I was working there as a web stack developer, also the job there wasn't really challenging enough), and I still haven't received any new job opportunities (for ML of course). Should I just take any opportunity that comes my way or should I wait for a company that really resonates with me? Also how long of a gap do you think is "not a big deal"?
Thanks.1 -
Ok, so here is the thing:
After a very long WINDOWS UPDATE
the sound has gone. No speakers or headphones working. After wasting >10 hours (not in a row)
trying to find the FINAL SOLUTION, I have just gave up. Bought a working external sound card, but I could only use headphones plugged into it.
In a week, I booted Linux (cos I have never really
used it and not with the sound problem in mind) and guess what - on Linux sound works normally! On THE SAME LAPTOP!!!
I belive the update somehow harmed the audio drivers. I'm really fed up with it.9 -
So this is my first job at a corporate company and my God I need to apply for permission and wait for it for so long just to install common freewares for dev like VS Code. Is this normal? Really I am pissed when requirements pop up and I get stalled for over a week.12

So long story short:
I've been told to think about a new feature which is really helpful but it's a bit tricky. Tricky because many edge cases have to be considered. So I've thought about it tried to consider all cases wrote a todo list and was hoping to implement it.
But it came as it should and my coworker got that job :( as always if you really want to implement it yourself ;) -
I had this amazing friend during my Bachelors and I think because of her I started to learn programming.
Long story short, IT(not just IT though) curriculum in India is shit. So you do not really get to learn during your college. It’s completely on you and how you self teach. This friend who I am talking about not just learnt all this and did research for herself, but she tried to teach and make others aware as well. She organised DjangoGirls workshop in our city where I participated. That’s when I really started learning stuff useful in real world. -
Ok so 2 questions here:
(I’m not good at googling)
1. I want to run my telegram bot and some other really small things on a server. Do you have an idea what I could use. (Services or shy like a raspberry pi) it really doesn’t need much capacity
2. (Thank you for reading this long and helping me out) How can I download a website in nodejs and use sth. Like getelementbyid? -
Statically linking to qt5 is quickly driving me fucking insane.
I've a list of unresolved dependencies during linking longer than a really long fucking list. Ugh.
Cmake, why can't you save me?
Think I'll just go back to dynamic and build on each needed system.1 -
It's just really unexpected for me, but I'm about to uninstall mx player. Font catch loading take toooo long and there is no way to solve it. Goodbye MX, you were a good player and you are not any more.7

Got my stickers today, after so long.
Don't what to make a fuss of it, but it does really gives happiness when they arrive for the first time.
Thanks devRant :) -
Rate your company / co-workers, how intersting the projects are! (1 to 10), and write down how long have you been working for them.
I'm really curious to see how satisfied people are with the social part of the company they work with.4 -
Well all be dead and this colossal waste of time will still continue
Would really like to settle down in a house long before I’m dead. Thanks.3 -
Looking through modlists and seeing how most of the mods on GitHub haven't been updated in a long time and their maintainer are inactive as well really is sad to see..

I don't know why but the inside of my nostrils were numb for the past two days.. It's weird.
My senses get numb when I'm tired and I won't really feel senses like touching properly but staying numb for such a long time is very rare for me. 🤔1 -
What is your opinion about courses?
I got into the world of development from the world of Sysadmining and security with 10 month long Java course and now doing web courses in my free time.
I feel this really helped me, as before I tried to learn completely by myself but failed. Now I feel much more confident learning by myself(albeit I still feel Noobish as fuck)
How did you learn? Did you take courses? Completely by yourself? Through work?4 -
I have been writing code in swift for such a long time now any other language feels old and really clunky.

Being jobless for a long time is frustrating, but when you're now in a situation where you really need a job within the month, life has become a horror story. My anxiety is off the charts. I can't even focus on learning and improving my skills. I don't have any savings to be able to afford more time.5

Any non-tech hobby usually helps my coding, because relaxing breaks are far more efficient if I'm not just laying in a bean bag trying not to think about work but rather engaged in something unrelated. During the summer I was storing a really good electric guitar because the owner emigrated, so when I felt stuck I played some music. I used to play the cello in middle school but I was never really good at it nor did I care to practice properly because it felt a lot like yet another class to attend. Apparently music practice works whether you do it in one long or several short rounds as long as the total time is enough.1

Phew, long time no see, devRant!
That Uni really squished life out of me. Damn. But awesome damn.
Still love ya tho, just want you to know that. You're awesome, really:)1 -
So… C++ seems kinda ok, as long as you don’t use like 80% of the language :-)
This is me making concessions when a library I really want to try (Dear ImGUI)is written in C++…
(yes, I know about cimgui, but for some reason I wanna learn upstream instead of generated bindings…)4 -
Alright, Kotlin, I really like you but...
WHY TF IS 0xFFFFFFFF A LONG. WHY DO YOU TAKE THIS PERFECTLY FINE, BUT SIGNED, 32BIT AND USE IT AS A FUCKING LONG. NOW I'M SUPPOSED TO APPEND .toInt() AT EVERY TIME I WANT SOME HEX EVALUATED AS A COLOR.
THIS IS NOT OK, I NEED ANSWERS. HOW SHIT INTO YOUR BRAIN AND THOUGHT THIS WAS FINE!!!1 -
Question to the freelancers here.
How long did it take you to make a living with freelancing and did you start freelancing fulltime right away or 20-40% besides another job?
I'm thinking about freelancing for a while now, but I guess in the beginning the money coming in will be really unpredictable, right?
About me, I'd call myself a senior level developer (Java, JS, SQL and stuff like that). -
Not a rant/!rant

So I really liked the movie Blindspotting from this summer. I originally watched it because the two main characters (and writers) are two of my favorite rappers, but it's a great fucking movie.
The way they're doing the soundtrack for the movie is basically releasing multiple EPs (honestly not 100% sure how long it's gonna go on). And I just found out that the second EP got released like a month ago. I've been listening to it and I fucking love it.
So nothing really important, I'm just really hype for this right now. -
Making classes and functions without commenting what I expect each class and function to do. Which means that my classes and functions have really long names.
Example Code:
Class ReallySpecificClassToWorkWithThisFramework { ...
public void DoThisActionInTheFramework (obj TheKeyToTheWholeFunction) { ... }

I have for a very long time wondered about, what do people do when using git and databases? If I locally add new columns to the db, how in the world would you easily make the change in production?
Do I really have to manually do it or take the time to make scripts for it?2 -
How possible is it to have a decentralised internet?
Because currently we have an almost centralised net... Where the major players are Google, Amazon, Alibaba and the likes acting as data holders.
This really bothers me and it's fair to say that the original dream of an internet for the people, by the people, is long gone.
Can we foresee a p2p in place of this monopolitic centralised internet?4 -
My first exposure to computers was when I was about 5 at least that's what I remember. My dad and his friend built custom rigs for people in their spare time back then (late 90s) I remember playing some racing game. Other than that o eventual got one of their old computers and used it for a really long time, replacing it with a gateway until high school then hitting PC gaming and programming I built my first custom rig with my dad.

I'm actually in the middle of an impossible deadline and I just needed a break. I'm in a third world country that basically doesn't have any decent internet infrastructure. But that isn't really the problem. The problem was that we couldn't really learn online for a long while and once we had that going, all the CS teachers decided that we should be doing our final, defensible projects within 2 weeks notice (even though we didn't really have the time or the appropriate knowledge to do it) and so it was all basically a struggle where you'd have 3 or less days to shit out some kind of program for one subject and then immediately get to work on another. At this point I might just need a gap year...
-
What are your thoughts on jumping ships often to get higher salary?
I feel it doesn't make sense if you are really into learning. From what I've seen, when you become senior or have more responsibilities, the work that needs to be implemented takes more time. Because these responsibilities include aligning multiple teams in the company. Jumping ships won't let anyone experience the work.
I'm not against getting higher salary. But is jumping purely for that reason sustainable in the long run?2 -
When I'm really really stuck, I generally stress out that I should be able to figure it out so I walk outside, sit down, listen to relaxing music and imagine I'm on some isolated mountain somewhere away from all the problems of deadlines and managers and algorithms...then i just write down what i need to do and what i have done already and have a little brainstorm session with myself over possible causes/solutions from sensible to crazy, just anything possible... generally I always come to 2 methods - divide and conquer and document and destroy (the latter being used in cases such as having to fix something in an undocumented 10,000s lines long sproc that someone who left the company wrote)
-
I had lot of interviews this week and the possibility in which I didnt think I could succeed is the one with most % of success (maybe because I know by sight certain people -which are good developers- and so I thought for a long time "You must be really sharp to enter here"). The thing is that I feel anxious... Never seen spring cloud (eureka or netflix zuul) for example... Anyway, didnt get the offer yet...

completely selfish post/question.
I'm in search of an Android smartphone. I'm focusing on the camera, storage size, battery life and internet. Budget: ~500€.
My superficial search spotted Galaxy S20 ultra / Note 20 ultra.
Any feedback?
Any recommendations?
I think it's time to replace my trusty S7edge as it started turning off randomly. Damn, I like my S7e!
P.S. I wonder if the S23 ultra battery really holds that long... :) Too bad it's >1k€8 -

well... I really dont know how to explain this error

my result is just supposed to be hello world and I am getting this.

I checked the github and no one gives this complaint. I honestly can't read that error code, I just want it to go away

the final season of mr. robot and a sudden usecase had me looking into python again after a long time. forgot way too many basic things. 6 hours to open a csv and applying some regex filters from a json setting file? really? not exactly helpful while fantasizing about a developer career, or maybe the necessary hint to stick to the decent job that pays the bills.2

So I'd like to see some opinions on different editors and IDEs.
I personally use Atom, and I really dig all the functionality and packages it has available. What do you use and why? Hear a lot of suggestions for VSCode and the like... and it looks cool but does it do anything Atom can't? They all seem fairly similar to me in the long run if you take the time to set them up the way you like.14 -

So, I'm currently looking for advices and this may be very long. It will be about web developpment, so that you know if it's worth your time or not !
I want to help my father build a website. The project will start little but can grow really big if everything goes as he planned (which will probably not happend but I'd like to share that experience with him anyway).
That means that we need it to be really flexible. As I have a little bit of experience with it, I was thinking to do it with node.js.
The thing is my father would like to be able to edit himself from time to time ; which means CMS, which I'm not really excited about. I told him so and he agreed on node.js if I don't find anything else that will be really good (he looked himself for CMS and wasn't really convinced anyway)
So I'm asking you, wonderful community, is there any suitable (and enjoyable) CMS that I could use ?
In any case, have you general advice for the newbie I am ?
Thanks in avance !2 -
It's something that comes with practice, but in general it's much better to overestimate than underestimate.
- Always take your time. Don't be rushed into plucking a number out of thin air.
- Break the task down into really small, atomic chunks.
- Each of those chunks will take at least twice as long as you think it does - nothing goes to plan 100% the first time!
- Make sure you add contingency at the end. -
What has happened to the collab feature?
I just came back to DevRant after a rather long time because last time I checked it was just shitty r/ProgrammerHumor memes (it seems to have changed for good now, thank you very much everyone. I guess I will be here more often again) and I can't find the collab tab :( I really enjoyed it, what happened?5 -
that moment when you have a really promising idea for an app but still don't know how to do it / know exactly it is still a long way to go.

Same conversation
Young woman
Probably not so much younger
Same profession
Same real profession
What they’re doing who the hell knows
Happy valley
Incapable of conversation
Capable but unwilling for some reason
Kind of provokes me
I want her to say how she really feels
She works instead
It’s all they ever do anywhere these days
And hence why everything is so ducking repetitive
Maybe should have fucked her heh
Would have at least gotten us alone long enough to switch up conversations18 -
It was a really really long day.
After today I think my brain change color. It feels like the color you assosiate with the sound that apple makes when its sad. -
My shell was taking a really long time to start and I spent hours disabling every single plugin and trying to start it up without it to find out which one was the culprit.
Turns out it wasn't any of my plugins, it was NVM.

I have a microUSB B? portable battery but it's taking really long to recharge and the connection is always faulty. Need to push down on the cable to get it to even charge.
Had same problem with my first smartphone and that's why it was replaced but it's there a way to fix it? Without opening it up or replacing the port?
The battery itself is still good...9 -
Hi! I'm from Argentina, and on top of that from a relatively small city. Suffice it to say that there are next to none technology/programming/development events around. Do any of you know of a website where I can buy "stickers" ? I've seen some laptops full of grunt, gulp, GitHub, js, Python, etc etc stickers on top, and I wold really love to have some. Shipment is not an issue (as long as it ships within USA :P)
Thanks a lot !!!!3 -
If you were through a long phase (year or two) of zero to minimal learning and lots of procrastination, how did you finally break it?
I used to be in a Company with really less work load and now I procrastinate a really lot, despite having work to do.1 -
Junior frontend here, I really fucked up with SCSS nesting. It's a nightmare to go back and maintain or extend the UI. I really should go back and sort this shit out. Some parts of the hierarchy even contains pointers which I phased out long ago, but somehow it still works.
Let this be a lesson. -_-5 -
I really need some fucking help! I have been learning web development myself from online tuts and a book for the past 6 months. I am plateauing. I really have not learned anything new I a long time. Following node blogs and angular apps are hard for me to grasp. Can anyone suggest simple projects I xan work on in order to build my comprehension and understand as I learn more complicating things. When I follow an express js blog, for example, I only understand half the logic. It's tough. Anything helps. Please and thank you. #iwanttobeadeveloper2

Anyone who uses Vim as code editor?
I recently learned Vim and the more I explore it, the more I love it.
Is it really helpful to go through the pain of learning those shortcut keys in the long run?1 -

collAnon.app v2.0.21, my long running PWA/WebApp about private discussions and confrontations, is finally out with many theme and UI improvements, better forms and a lot of bug fixing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm really happy of this release of mine that I wanted to share it here.
It's also mostly self hosted with a third party, GDPR compliant, CDN (I did learn many things integrating Blazor WASM with a CDN)8 -
I really wish i can jump and be focussed like alot of the developers i have met. I tend to take long to get focused and long to get out of it. The reason why it was so hard to work with companies and easy to work remotely

A rant but not devrant
I was just sending a video that I took with my phone while explaining a concept to my friend, the video took too long, the Internet was really slow 😒
When it was done I went and checked the size of the video, it was like 340 MB 😅😅
The problem was my phones camera
Sony Xperia z1 camera 16 MP😁 -
Is leadership's willingness to accept shoddy code and a shoddy deployment process, as long as you can develop shoddy features early, a common theme among startups?
I really get a "not my problem when I sell this business" vibe from this attitude.5 -
Exciting and challenging projects really helps with burnout. I didn't really believe that the solution is to work more it sounds stupid, but it reminded me why I love my craft, it was worth the sleepless nights(wouldn't do it in the long term). I hope you get the opportunity to work on something that you are passionate about and reignite that fire 🙂4

Has this happened to you all too or just me?
So I was interested in a coding course and it was really long like 8 weeks, but still I started and now in the mid I just got bored of it and want to do something else.
Do comment and tell me if it has happened to you too...1 -
Not for too long, really. Around 12-13h in the office and next 4-5h for my personal project. For a week. Then I stopped crunching and went back to 7-8h in the office and 6-7h of personal project.

eyes haven’t been the same since that long adhd meds fueled coding session last Monday. Flashes at the bottom rim that come and go are really annoying the shit out of me and freaking me out. I have an eye appt next Tuesday. Anyone else get these symptoms?6
