Installed Linux on an old windows laptop. This is my conversation 5 minutes ago...
Wife: "Have how you got internet?"
Me: "What do you mean, it has a wireless adapter built in?"
Wife: "But it's not Windows?"
WTF!!!
Me: "Pass my phone, this is going on devRant"
Wife: "Please no, not again"25 -
I was giving an interview this other day and I was sharing my screen with the interviewer.
Interviewer 😦: Is this linux you are using?
Me 😅: Ah yes. Since this is a coding round I am not comfortable on windows for coding.
Interviewer 😳: And this is your personal laptop?
Me 😁: Yes, since the only use of windows is primarily to play games and the games I play are usually supported on linux, I dont see any reason why my daily driver should be anything other than linux.
Interviewer 😯: What distro is this?? Looks cool.
Me 😆: Its Ubuntu with KDE Plasma. There are some really cool things in here which actually make my life quite easier.
Interviewer ☺️: I must check this out today itself. Lets start with the interview then.
Me 😊: *Blushing in my mind
And this is how you score some instant brownie points in an interview. Actually if truth be told, that laptop was actually my work laptop and my personal laptop has windows on it because nvidia and Assassin's Creed.19 -
I once brought my Kali Linux laptop to school. (Because normal had dead battery, waiting for shipping)
MFW someone from the IT department is called in to fix teachers projector and he sees I still have the default dragon wallpaper on it.
MFW when recognises it it's Kali.
MFW he calls the police and my laptop gets taken away because 'its dangerous' and I get questioned in school.
The police came back a week later to check my laptop again. 'uhh we gotta check the logs'.
IF I WANTED IT TO BE DANGEROUS YOU'D BE FIXING A LOT MORE THAN JUST THE FUCKING PROJECTOR!
Also, wuddup devrant!11 -
Friend messaged me:
"could you install Linux onto my laptop? I'm getting really fucking tired of windows 10."
YES YES YES OF COURSE I CAN AND I WILL. EVERY DE-WINDOWS-ED PC IS ONE MORE!45 -
RandomGuy: I can't seem to play some videos on my laptop. Can you help?
LinuxPro: You have to install Arch Linux to do that. Windows 10 sucks.25 -
I remember back at study I had this friend who hated windows just as much as I did.
Then, for a project, he HAD to run windows on his laptop.
He was very fucking angry about that but did this:
Installed a Linux (debian?) vm (virtualbox) on his laptop and gave it all the spare resources.
Then he ran it fullscreen.
He was still using windows technically but at boot up he booted up the Linux vm and he just worked with that one.
Teacher wasn't pleased but he couldn't do much since the fucker ran windows on his laptop as instructed xD13 -
Linux is awesome. In runs on my fridge (Tizen), my TV (Tizen), my phone (Android), my watch (Android Wear), My PC (Ubuntu) and my laptop (Kali). I'm now trying to force my parents to convert to Linux.24
-
Just realized I'm using an almost decade old Acer aspire laptop for programming. And its still useful because Linux.18
-
So my friend just got a new laptop and she never used a Linux based OS before,so I recommended it to her as she is also a CS under grad student,so I thought she might find it useful and interesting to try it out on her own ..This was her rant14
-
"Just try and move your workflow to Windows, it's not that different from Linux"
My boss, when I asked him if I could install Arch on my company laptop20 -
My dad came with a windows laptop and asked me to convert a lot of jpg files to pdf on a usb stick (wtf?) he showed to me a tool on the laptop that convert files one by one ... and there is 58 jpg file.
Soooo I unpluged the usb key and pluged it into my linux laptop and ...
for f in *.JPG; do convert "$f" "pdf/$(basename "$f" .JPG).pdf"; done
My dad could not believe I had finished in 5 minutes
Linux Powaaaa !17 -
Overheard a conversation in class today: This dude was talking about how "Linux was terrible and worthless" because he'd spent a few hours trying to install Ubuntu on his laptop over the weekend and couldn't get it to work. I don't know how to tell him Linux isn't the problem here.10
-
When your friends' iMac freezes yet again and you're sitting there smiling with your Linux mint laptop without a single slowdown or crash in years13
-
once you start using linux on laptop. here is a condition of your mouse.
i don't know when I touched it last time.16 -
When I update my linux I usually keep the terminal to full screen.
Roommates enter :
Friend1: Now what the fuck did you do? What are these lines?
Friend2: It was a good laptop.
Friend3: So ungrateful.
Me: *faceplam*10 -
So today I had a client come in and give me a free "broken" laptop that wouldnt turn on and was covered in grease and what appeared to be dog hair everywhere. So i go through my every day troubleshooting, found the problem and fixed it. Next i disassemble the entire laptop and just start air dusting and cleaning connections like crazy. Now I'm a proud owner of a really old school laptop that I can probably keep alive for another 10 years :) This will be a perfect machine to test arch linux on 😃18

Linux is great they said
Linux works well they said
Linux is totally awesome they said

4 live cds
(Ubuntu, mint, Debian, Antergos)
3 wouldn’t boot beyond splash screens or even into setup.
no fucking keyboard
No fucking wifi
No fucking trackpad
Now I’m sitting here with Antergos, with a USB keyboard, USB mouse and an ethernet cable plugged into my laptop 🤷♂️
Good news... I think I might be getting through the hard parts26 -
Gets email from work
"New password policy introduced from next month
Passwords will have to include:
- a capital

- a number
- a symbol
- be at least 8 characters
Passwords will be be changed every 60 days with a new password not previously used"
Everyone starts moaning, there I am laughing as I'm in Linux and off their domain controller, and my windows laptop is a BYOD laptop and they don't want it on the domain :D27 -
My mother-in-law asked me to reinstall her laptop. I made a deal with her that I will happily do that, but only if it can be a Linux distribution.
She eventually after asking questions about it agreed.
She don't want to go back anymore.
Funny enough, the co-workers didn't understand why is her laptop slightly looks different, so they started to tell her , that the laptop is full with virus.
I explained her that she doesn't even have system privilege to install one even if she wants.
She was happy with the answer :D5 -
Some people assume that since I am techy that I have a really good laptop or setup.
Nope.
Just have my raspberry pi 3 as my main computer. Go Linux🔥🔥12 -
Why all the hate? Jesus...
I love my Windows 10 laptop, I love my Android phone, I love working in PHP. But I would never, NEVER, think less of anyone who prefers Mac/Linux/iPhone/C#/Python/what-ever-the-fuck12 -
Thanks ssh!
Because of you I don't have to leave the bed to run commands on my Linux server(laptop) sitting on my desk.8 -
friend: *sees me using linux on my laptop* oh hey u got the same desktop as my boyfriend's
me: "really? hes using linux mint too? since when did he change from windows to linux?"
friend: "whats linux?"
me: "this" *shows some features*
friend: "oh i thought it was just the background picture......"7 -
Found an old monitor in our garage and decided to hook it up to my laptop. Yes, I am learning how to use Linux :D10
-
I recently found an old laptop and turned on. It was running Windows but was too slow to use. I had Linux installed and it runs like new. I now have a laptop to use with no extra charge. Thanks Linux!2
-
This is my little "setup".
Have a gaming laptop, too. Battery is barely dead but meeh. Maybe I'll try installing ACK... ehm... ARSCH linux on that 🤔
Some specs as new screenshot in a comment below ☺20 -
I don't have any laptop stickers. I don't know if that makes me insane or one of the non-crazy people. I just don't like the idea of turning my laptop into a Nascar of tech companies/frameworks/bad Linux jokes. Not to mention stickers can be a real pain to get off.13
-
Got arch Linux working on my laptop.
Installed Budgie GNOME, Cairo dock, Termite, VS Code, Code::Blocks, Android Studio, IntelliJ....
It's so beautiful9 -
Continuation of the story with Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon on the old Core2 Duo with 2 GB RAM and HDD. The guy has had that PC under Linux for 1.5 months now, had never had Linux before, has no IT background, and is over 70.
Upon visit, I checked how the machine was doing. OK, he had forgotten to apply the updates, so I highlighted paying attention to the red icon in the tray. Launched the updates, all ran through.
Otherwise, he had managed to install Skype all by himself (network effect because of his family...) and had bought a webcam plus a microphone. Linux had just recognised everything without any fuzz. Even his Skype buddies were impressed, he said.
On top of that, he likes how much faster that PC is compared to his much more current Win 10 laptop and actually uses the old Linux PC more than the laptop.
He also enjoys that Linux doesn't do weird things all by itself all the time. That's not his experience with Win 10.12 -
Best:
1. Get into Linux
2. Quit Med studies after 5 years and jump into the IT train.
Worst:
use windows tools to resize partitions on a dual-boot laptop. Lost all my data on Linux parttn. :(8 -
Installed Fedora in a partition on my old Acer laptop having never used Linux before. It's so much faster than Windows 10!
And the terminal is pretty 😍10 -
So today, after trying out a lot I finally installed Linux on my laptop. Mainly because Microsoft released a while ago what data they collect :)5
-
God damn it. Today i took my laptop to school and you cant guess how many people though i’m a hacker. It’s quite annoying. But just because you use linux doesnt mean you are a hacker! You uneducated pieces of dumbass!!!!10
-
Yessss. Took me a few tries throughout the day but I successfully installed arch linux on my laptop :D Any good desktop environment recommendations?23
-
Demo's
When you show your debian linux laptop to your potential customer while saying 'it is as comfortable as working with your other os' , you open up the laptop lid.. And it freezes.
The one time you do not want it to freeze, it freezes2 -
Since everyone is posting their system, I'll do it now, too:
- Type: Laptop
- Age: about 5 years
- Weight: 2-3 kg (too much)
- Modifications: Paper below problematic keys; Samsung Evo 850 250GB SSD
- Usecase: School-Laptop with every Office-Suite I could find.
- Pros: Wrecks my PC with the boottime (Gnome > KDE); Looks really sick; Really lightweight Arch installed; Quiet when not under load
- Cons: Really heavy; Battery old and unreliable; Bluetooth stops working after closing lid13 -
Linux set up on laptop day 2: can't make the screen lock after resume from suspend, can't connect to my VPN, can't set key bindings in i3wm... But I did successfully set my wallpaper.10

After over 2 months of not opening devRant, here I go again.
My dad's laptop is dying so I decided to give him my old one (because I ordered a new laptop). I asked him if should I keep Linux on it, or should I install Windows. He said "ehh, keep the Linux". So there it is! Linux Mint on top of Dell Latitude E6320 and another person converted to Linux!
Also sorry for not posting just a SS.6 -
Saw a guy using his thinkpad in George Street Hungry Jack's(Sydney), decided to take a look on his laptop screen, he was running i3wm, wonder if he is on devrant. Feels good to see linux users around.1
-
I’m now running Fedora Workstation as the primary OS on my laptop simply because Linus Torvalds does... I mean if it’s good enough for the creator of Linux, it’s good enough for me. 😅
I really need to stop fucking switching distros...30 -
A few months ago, I changed my laptop from Windows to a dualboot of Windows and Linux (NixOS). Since then, Windows has never seen the light of day.
Best decision I've ever made - Windows is useless.17 -
Got Ubuntu on my laptop for traveling 😁😁 Loving it, once I got Numix theme installed I loved it even more 😋
No one in my classes have ever heard about Linux or Ubuntu until they met me.8 -
Linux Mint ladies and gentlemen
I will dedicate a separate rant for choosing an OS for my new laptop, as I was heavily disappointed in some OS-es17 -
Finally made my laptop a dedicated linux machine, time to start working on a theme then to start on OS development until Gamemaker comes to linux! :-P14
-
me: hey dad i finally installed linux on my laptop
dad: whats that? nvm, what i want u to do is set up a server for emails
me: *slowly backs out*
dad doesnt acknowledge the fact that im diving into linux :(7 -
Recently started using Linux for software development and it is waay easier to get things done than on windows. As a beginner in CS and a total Windows person, I am beginning to really enjoy Linux. I will definitely install a dualboot on my Laptop for the new semester in school.7
-
My girlfriend asked me for help picking out a new laptop for school... being the helpful person I am, I picked out this but with Arch Linux because who needs 2 Nvidia cards anyways10
-
Inb4 2 question ahead
1. So in another 2 weeks I’ll be getting a new storage to upgrade my laptop, and since I will be developing C# both MVC and ASP.net should I stick to windows or there is a linux distro I could try using. Probably will dual booth if I have to use windows, so friendly linux is nice
2. For the storage I’ll be getting 860 EVO 250gb, any feedback? Also 4gb ram for the upgrade3 -
I accidentally turned on developer mode on my laptop. What do I do with it? What's it for. If it's on, I might as well use it.
Suggestions? it's win10 pro. (still playing around with Linux on VM, so suggestions of switching will be promptly ignored)4 -
My GF said today that she had a dream where someone took her laptop, deleted elementaryos and installed windows. She was so infuriated and enraged that she woke up, and it took her like five solid minutes to realize that it was just a bad dream, and her Linux is safe.
-
To all my linux peeps... and don't get on me about which OS and better and all that crap!
Anyway, until I decide on a new laptop, I am using my dad's old machine running Windows 10. I also have an old desktop with a first-gen core i3, 8gb ram, 500gb HDD. What I'd like to do is run linux on the desktop and remote into it from my laptop. Is there a good way to RDP in to linux from Windows and preserve the full experience (like RDP from Windows to Windows)?22 -
Just now, I managed to compile my first linux kernel for my laptop on the first try :D
Granted, it was just a single line to get my touchpad to work, still a great feeling.
Also, Nvidia is still going strong on my laptop, no problems whatsoever :)6 -
Android studio runs sooooo much better on Linux as compared to windows!!!
I just can't believe it!
My build times have been reduced by like 70% on the same laptop!
Why on earth was I even using windows all along!!5 -
> likes linux
> maybe not even install windows on shiny new laptop?
> debian-live.iso
> y u no wifi?
> google: lol apt-get
> but i has no internets...
Why only with Debian and not with literally any other flavor of Linux I've tried, which are all Debian variants?
Halp?18 -
After i read about Arch Linux for the first time here about a few weeks ago, i thought i'd give Antergos a try on my Laptop which i use solely for working. Found out that Matlab is supported, so i don't even need a VM.
First time having a Linux distro. Still feels a bit odd for being a Win only user for a long time, but i love the look and with every hour it gets easier. :)45 -
"Linux is shit because nothing works on my new DOM 2017/2018 laptop!"
Yes it's true that nothing will work if you put your finking ubuntu 14.04 installation with a fucking old 3.13 kernel in your new Laptop!
Update. Your. Fucking. System.6 -
"Time to install Arch Linux!"
*8 hours later*
"Back to Open Suse!"
Repeat every 4-5 months.
Seriously, I would LOVE to get Arch running on my laptop, but everytime I try to something goes wrong, be it bootloader, audio, cooptimus drivers, undetected network card, window manager going crazy, etc etc etc... and I simply end giving up and reinstalling my backup.
Someday, Arch, someday...4 -
More than a year ago, frustrated by a sub par experience of linux on my laptop (drivers), I planned to buy a MacBook to get a stable Unix platform.
But it was too expensive.
I convinced myself that it will pay for itself.
And today my app, i created on this laptop, has finally paid for it. :D
I am very happy.7 -
Awesome day.
Linux-Days were awesome, I got my first stickers for my laptop and I just got a letter from the company, I had an interview at, a week ago.
It say, I got the apprenticeship as a sysadmin.
This is so fucking awesome.8 -
i met an old friend in a mall and he start talk about linux
friend: hey i just installed arch linux in my laptop!
me: wow cool! you are so expert.
friend: btw i have a problem with it, how to change directory in their black screen?
me: cd?
friend: no! i didn't use cd. i use flashdisk to install it.
me: ah.. okay.3 -
So I have attended AWS tech bootcamp yesterday and today.
One thing I notice is everyone either have Mac laptop or other laptops with Win10.
I'm probably the only one with Linux distro. 🤔
I feel special and at the same time, lonely.7 -
Surprinsingly Linux (Elementary OS 0.4) handles Intel HD Graphics 3000 better than Windows 10. Games runs actually better on Elementary, than on Windows on my laptop!11
-
I ordered a second hand mini laptop. (Mini as in 8 inch)
Now I obviously will put some kind of Linux distro onto it but I'm wondering which one I should choose.
Debian based is a must, except for that I don't know yet.
Ideas?21 -
I HAVE A NEW LAPTOP!
and it now has a functioning linux 😁
I fucked it up once tho. I removed the entire network manager by uninstalling bluez. How the fuck, I don't know.7 -
Just bought an SSD for my mother's 8 year laptop (i5). I suggested her to let me install Linux, since it would definitely run smoother than Win 10, and she finally agreed. Let's hope she gets used to it.
Btw, I was thinking either on Ubuntu or Mint. (Suggestions welcome)12 -
I am also using devrant on my linux mint kde laptop...
https://github.com/Meadowcottage
(it's a unoffical app) its working fine :)
thanks Meadow_dev for making this.
Check this out guys :)
Thanks have a great day :)16 -
Took me a few hours, but managed to finally run Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 on my old school Toshiba laptop running Arch Linux xD Still needs some work, but super happy I got it running :D15
-
Installed Linux on a crappy laptop got many many errors. in the process of googling then fixing them I fell in love with the os itself and it turned me towards programming now we sit here me a game Dev major15
-
*installing linux on my mini laptop*
- Dad: "you should make a backup image of windows 10"
- Me: "LOL NOPE!"
(With 2gb of ram, linux makes it the perfect lightweight coding machine. But with W10? Jesus christ)6 -
There is a possibility that I might maybe hopefully get a laptop if I help my dad with one of his own long-term projects.
If this actually happens, I don't have to run Linux of a SD card anymore :D2 -
OK, I love Linux. But I hate the whole "sacrifice-functionality-so-it-can-be-completely-free-and-open-source" thing.
I tried to install Linux a while back on my old laptop, and getting Wi-Fi to work was a nightmare. Apparently they didn't have the right driver for my Wi-Fi card, because it wasn't "free" enough for them. ugh. Most people prefer for their computer to WORK than for every single piece of code to be open source. Who modifies their Wi-Fi driver and redistributes it?
Ugh. Linux is cool, but not this part.21 -
Got the cheapest laptop I could find that would run Windows mixed reality.
Installed Linux subsystem for Windows and Ubuntu.
Nothing but giant flying terminal windows across my view of a virtual Seascape.
This is my new home.4 -
About a year ago, I started a new position as a Full Stack Java Developer. When I started my employer got me a brand new, shiny, Asus laptop. As I prefer Linux (mint) to perform my magic I had to whipe Windows 10 and reinstall it. It turned out that my new shiny laptop was in fact so shiny that Linux (mint) didn't support/contain all the necessary drivers (yet), especially the network/bluetooth drivers and the gfx's drivers turned out a bit of a pain.. Over the year things slowly got better with every new kernel update that came in. However, due to me trying to fix things before those updates, Linux also had become somewhat unstable.
So ... last week I took some time to re-install that laptop and also take the opportunity to upgrade from Linux mint 18 to Linux mint 19 ... or so I thought ... Linux mint 19 was running (very) hot to the point where the laptop would shutdown due to the MOBO's thermal protection mechanims kicking in. ... Ok ...maybe Linux mint 19 was not such a good choice .... let's see if Ubuntu 18.04 is an option ... Nope ... Linux would lock up within a minute after booting up ... no mouse, no keyboard ... nothing. .... *sigh* ... let's (re)install Linux Mint 18.3 again ... and behold, I can start performing magic again.
Linux, it can be such a pain at times. I still prefer it, but running into all those 'weird' things on my laptop when reinstalling, I have to admit I have seriously considered 'just' installing windows 10 again and be done with it. Luckily I could also remind myself of what a pain Windows is to do serious docker/java development in comparison to Linux which gave me the strength to keep going ... :)6 -
!rant
My laptop just died for the third time.
Need to buy a new one. Not a mac.
Linux machine with 15" screen, sdd, usb c, with 8gb ram and a graphics processor.
Suggestions?29 -
I hate Microsoft for not making Office run on Linux. It's the only reason I have to use a fucking MacBook instead of a Linux laptop. No Microsoft, I'm not going to run windows on my laptop. The system ist too much different to my production systems.
I hate Microsoft for not thinking about the consequences of not providing a Linux version. I have to use the fucking Apple Finder in my daily job. I have to buy a thousand dongles to connect anything to my laptop.8 -
Haveing Arch Linux on my old laptop. Before Arch it was slow. Now I have OS so minimalistic that there's almost nothing after booting.
I even have to start GUI manualy beacouse I don't need it always.
Almost non of my friends can use it so my data is safe here (I like privacy).
But for downside I imagine useing vim in text envirement during flight. Non tech guys can assume that useing vim is plane hijacking.5 -
Yesterday I had to start the windows 10 partition on my work laptop in order to use a shitty conference call software that works only on Windows. Windows decided that it was time to upgrade the system without asking me, so it deleted grub from the MBR, and destroyed my Linux partition (I had to recover it from a backup sector and it was full of errors).
Result: I wasted my morning fixing the laptop.
Thank you Microsoft. -
The last reason for keeping windows on my laptop ceased to exist so now im watching as linux is installing :')6

Best laptop to run your linux distro
"Razer founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan has announced that Razer is soon going to support Linux distros on its Razer Blade laptop series officially. To welcome the suggestions from the community, Razer has created a new Linux Corner hub"5 -
@localhost My setup! The laptop is on private WiFi that is unmonitored. There's a desktop tower behind the monitors that is wired into the unmonitored network as a server running Linux. it's decent but could be better. and I need more stickers1
-
TL:DR; DON'T GET INTEL+NVIDIA LAPTOP FOR LINUX.
In the same vain as Linus Torvalds: "Fuck Nvidia, and Intel".
Trying to get intel+nvidia laptop prime w/e working is a living hell.
I'm running Manjaro(arch for lazy people) with I3-gaps(larbs).
So Manjaro provides this handy script/program mhwd that supposedly would enable the non free blob Nvidia driver except it doesn't work cause it uses bumblebee and it's saying it can't find the clearly installed fucking Nvidia driver.
Bashing my head against a wall is more fucking productive then getting my cum stain of laptop to work properly.
"Just disable the intel graphics in bios"
I would except my old shitty Acer bios piece of fucking crap can't even after booting Windows for usb hdd and flashing BIOS.
GUESS WHAT LINUX COMMUNITY THAT'S WHY NOBODY WANTS TO FREAKING USE LINUX FOR GAMING.
I fucking love Linux but I gave up gaming for it.
I'll start joining red team from now on instead of trying to use your broken shit.19 -
My Chromebook Pixel 2015 died yesterday. *sniff* I really liked the build quality and using crouton for Linux.
My 2nd work laptop ever was a IBM Thinkpad and I really liked that back in the day.
Now I'm looking at the Thinkpad 25th anniversary edition. Anyone have one? Thoughts?3 -
All these switching to linux posts and it feels universe is telling me to make the switch.
Yesterday, again, i had to go through failing windows 10 update. Wasted over 2 hr just booting up my pc because of fucking update that is incompatible with my PC.
I want to switch right now.
Which linux distro do you recommend? I let devRant choose my OS. ( p.s Its a laptop )33 -
Installed Windows XP in a Virtual Machine today and used it as if it were my host os, people at the classes were like. wtf.. lol. Next plan, setup someone's laptop with Linux and make it look like Windows. Worth a shot lol.1
-
So I'm about to buy a laptop, and as any good developer Im already thinking on what are the first things I'm going to do with it, so far I've this list:
1- Enter BIOS and make sure everything is right.
2- Boot and configure all the crap that Windows asks
3- Download and install chrome and uTorrent
4- Download Fedora
4.5- Format the HHD
5- Partition my SSD and install fedora
6- Configure my dev environment, IDEs, runtimes, git aliases etc
7- Install Windows in another partition.
I'm I the only one with a routine?10 -
I use Mac in office for daily dev and tasks, and a Lubuntu laptop for Linux related jobs. My home PC runs Ubuntu. And my personal laptop has a Ubuntu-Windows dual boot. I haven't used the Windows for more than a year. Even I do most of the basic tasks in Terminal, both in Mac and Linux.
Now I need to install a custom ROM in my Android Snapdragon based phone. And all the tools I need runs in Windows only. I don't even want to open that boot partition. 😥
Any help on this? It would be better if I can get something which runs on Linux.15 -
Recently bought a new touch laptop. After trying Manjaro, Ubuntu and a couple of linux distros, I switched to Fedora. I simply love how it's so smooth.4
-
What flavor of Linux is everyone using? Why do you think it works well for developers? Got a new laptop and I'm trying to decide what to put on it. My other laptop has a dual boot of windows 10 and Kali Linux (my sudden interest to become a developer came from a desire to be better at Infosec/netsec stuff)
Curious to see what everyone uses from a developers perspective. Not sure I want to develop on Kali and windows is shit.23 -
So I got a 1.7 grand laptop for free a week ago.
Fuck me, the company I'm working at is the best.
Hp elitebook 840 g5, 16 gigs and auto -crypting ssd.
Corpo life is the best. Shame it's got windows on it and I can't get linux on it.5 -
Using Linux way back at school on a personal laptop.
Another student approach me and says:
- I like that skin what kind of skin (theme) has your windows machine?.
I replied:
- is Linux not windows is another operating system is my world2 -
Decided to ditch chromium when installing Linux on my work laptop for the first time, and stick to Firefox and DDG. No regrets, it works great!!2
-
Deactivated my Facebook account today. Enough of that shit, enough of excessive data tracking. Also switching to Linux on my home PC soon, already did on my laptop.5
-
Why does Linux Bluetooth audio not work properly!!!!
I have been using Linux on my laptop (moving from macOS). I got so used to Linux, and I love it so much at this point, but I really wanna use my Bluetooth speakers (subwoofer ❤️❤️).
So, now, I have to use OSX again and I am actually disliking it.
WHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!14 -
I finally turned my MSI laptop into a fully functioning dev machine. I just activated Windows Linux Subsystem, and got XCFE4 to run, then installed some Jetbrain IDEs ontop of it. And I'm straight up in business. Now I don't need to go out and buy the new shitty Macbook pros for $3k11
-
I solemnly swear to never buy a laptop with a realtek WiFi adapter again. Linux kernel doesn't fucking support it.10
-
I use Windows on my desktop, Linux on my laptop, and Android on my phone. But I've never never had a good use for Apple products! I'm fine with others using them but I need to have a little control over my devices!
Anyone else?4 -
I want to reinstall Linux on my laptop, and want to use something new. I've been using elementary on my laptop, and Fedora on my desktop. What distro should I use?20
-
Still new to dev, so I'm only used to windows but I want to try Linux. Don't want chance messing up my expensive pc, so instead, installing on old laptop I've been keeping in the closet. Installing Ubuntu Gnome, looked like a safe choice for beginner. This way I can try it out without consequence and possibly get new life out of an old machine.
Incidentally, any Linux specific apps/programs you'd recommend to a newbie?10 -
Do you think a dual core laptop with 2gb RAM on it can run Ubuntu and Kali Linux? The solely purpose is for programming (ubuntu) and ethical hacking / penetration testing (linux) ?
tbh, I’m learning linux because I want to try a new OS. Any tips so that I can easily adapt to this OS?
PS. I know this is a googleable question but I just want a perspective from this community.10 -
Now everyone were sharing their worksetup I thought I would want too to.
So here it is.
I have two laptops (one belongs to startup I work at) I use same keyboard mouse for both using synergy.
I have my editor and node server in one laptop and I check them out on other laptop (both are medium range laptop hence they are not exactly powerful). I am running Linux mint in both.
Then I have some embedded stuff on desk which is my hobby(currently working on esp8266 dev board that I built).
You can also see a projector clock I built projecting current time on left beside my bigger laptop. (Projection is on wall beside it)1 -
Since the last Windows Update broke my wife's laptop (the WiFi driver doesn't woro anymore) she's moving to Linux. I hope it goes well since she is a non-techi. I kinda am excited.
The biggest problem will be the lack of Adobe Illustrator. 😕14 -
Took the weekend to finish my phase out of Windows on my desktop and laptop.
Finally going Linux full time!
Goodbye constant forced reboots, awful updates, and lost files!5 -
Linux doesn't like my Asus laptop
For fuck's sake stop asking me to login again when I put in the correct password, cannot even sign in as a guest jeez
Never. Partitioning. Again.9 -
I wanted to get Linux since I'm collaborating with my brother and he uses it, so it will be easier to help him. Wasn't working. Emailed Razer customer support. Apparently my $2,150 laptop doesn't support Linux.15
-
Just went to install synergy for my new home setup after moving house and starting a new job where they gave me a Linux laptop3
-
Two new Laptops arrived at our office today. Tried to install Manjaro on a USB with different Windows Tools because Windows Laptop was the easiest to access. Nothing Fucking worked!
Searched and found a Linux laptop.
Used dd
First try success
dd is love ♥️3 -
10 minutes in and I’m in love... my 8 year old windows laptop which was at this point so agonizingly slow it was barely usable, is now lightning fast
I REALLY wanna install Linux on my main lappy but I’m too skittish about losing my music production stuff10 -
Hello everyone :)
So, I've recently switched from Windows 8 to Debian on my work (or study, rather) laptop, and so far it's been pretty intuitive and practical! But I'd like to explore the world ofr Linux a bit more in-depth, especially considering the fact that I'll "soon" head off to study Security in university. So, here's my question for y'all: does anybody happen to have good resources to share about linux system administration?
Thanks in advance! ^^17 -
Linux, don't care how frustrated you are, stop waking my laptop in the middle of the night and draining it's battery without consent.9
-
you have two computers:
a desktop and a laptop, but one has to run windows
which do you put linux on and why?16 -
It's fucking sad that when you buy a new laptop with good specs, good nvidia graphics, good sound and install Arch Linux because you hate fucking windows and arch way is the right way. But, then Linux fucks you because there is no proper nvidia support and you have to use wine which doesn't support new games and you run frequently into problems like audio (P.s. maybe in linux 4.10.11). You have to configure microphone everytime while using Skype and see some other guy having same laptop playing happily latest games without much burden.😣😣😥😥😔😔
When will Linux kernel be amazing for gaming??13 -
Was trying to dual boot Linux on a friend's laptop..
Messed up the partition system and now Windows crashes and no Grub on boot 😅😐
Gonna have to try to fix it tomorrow..
I've always had problems dual booting Manjaro for some reason4 -
I want to get into iOS development in the near future.
Problem is I already have a really powerful Linux laptop which I use for Android dev and I don't want to buy another overpriced macbook.
Are mac mini's worth it? Or are they too weak13 -
My laptop is 14 inch 1080p resolution display. None of the desktop environments scales correctly. Most of the time the font will ne too small or webpages on chrome looks weird.I want the display to look when on windows 10. I really want to switch to linux(gnome) but this is hogging me.13
-
Linux certainly is the best. It works even on my slow 4gb laptop.
One of my family member's laptop running vista went dead today. Checked system, seems like only workaround is using repair disks with iso. Used this chance to finally convince her on moving to ubuntu.
Well, considering there wasn't even any comparison needed for Vista x Linux, she might just need to suit herself using libreoffice instead of winoffice. Just afraid she(not familiar with computers) might be bothered about the sudo here and there-thats something that takes time to get used to for non-programmers.
Well, changing someone's OS really is a great accomplishment. Kudos for myself.3 -
Just realised I've been looking for an x86 based laptop to install Linux on just for around the house...
Been looking at buying a brand new one and only now just remembered I have an old 2009 MBP...
Let's break out the elementary OS USB and breathe some life in this baby!1 -
Keyboard in my laptop died, mobo issue. Work gave me an ex-lease Dell E6430s. First thing I did was dual boot with Ubuntu 16.10 - can't believe how smooth it was. When I put Debian on my Lenovo G570 I had a ton of issues. I love Linux.
-
I just bought a laptop (without OS, so i can put on linux without buying a useless windows license) on Amazon and now i can't wait for that2
-
So my mum is currently in the final stages of PhD in physiology and I warned her about WannaCry (she uses windows 10 laptop)
So now its my fucking fault and I have to copy all her 900GB files to my poor 1TB Linux laptop and she wouldn't even bother copying them to the family desktop (2TB) which no one uses and has no Internet access whatsoever. Like WTF!?!?!?!??!12 -
Sooo, here's my (non-professional) setup:
(I'm refering to the desktop, but latelly I've been programming in my laptop)
Laptop OS: Linux (Backbox 5.2)
Desktop OS: Windows 10 + Linux (Kali Linux 2018.3)8 -
Small laptop recommendations? Highest 15" I'll be installing Linux and mostly be programming doing research etc so don't need anything too power intensive I'm currently looking at the star lite ultrabook / laptop. Needs are long battery life, great keyboard.9
-
(Not sure if this is a rant.)
My mom got a Surface Pro a few days ago. I'm kinda happy because she'll be using more tech stuff. I mean, she used to do most of her work on her phone or on plain paper. Maybe she'll warm up towards using a laptop and maybe I can slowly introduce her to Linux. 🤔
Any suggestions for a Linux distro for a complete newbie?12 -
Hey Linux users. Right now I have a 2011 MacBook pro the new MacBooks you are unable to take apart so I will not buy another one. So if you had a choice of any laptop what would you choose? I do not game I am a web developer and play around with app development and I build ruby CLI's. Any suggestions on what PC? Also I'm looking at arch Linux for distro what do you guys think?15
-
Well fuck. This laptop was nice, then the hinges decided to remove themselves from the mount points. Also a metal side rail mananaged break as well...
Anyone have good suggestions for laptops? Prefer machines with a distro of Linux on it, but not afraid to install8 -
After hassling and saying all the benefits of Linux finally we agreed that she'd give Linux a go on her old laptop and after all the set ups she changes the background picture to windows xp's landscape just to feel good. Change never comes with some people.

TLDR; windows sucks donkey balls
Sometime ago I started to get battery issues on my laptop using windows. Even with 100% charge it would soon display 0% when unplugged.
A few months back I switched to linux on my laptop and on my desk station. And to my surprise, battery issues dissapeared while using linux (manjaro i3). Anybody had that same problem?
Anyway I dual boot win 10 and linux just in case I'd need windows, and this week I noticed my root parition didn't have any space left.
For the next few hours I'm in a car so I thought hey great time to reinstall linux with a bigger root partition. I already had reinstalled windows, and with all the bloat removed, I could shrink my windows partition to make more space for linux.
Now all I need to do is prepare a usb stick with the manjaro iso. I could do that in linux, but since reinstalling windows killed my grub bootloader I couldn't boot up manjaro.
Right, so in windows I go and want to create this bootable EFI usb stick from the manjaro iso. Now the battery issue kicks in again, stating 0%. But with luck, the usb creation finished without my machine dying. Now I just need to restart my laptop and boot from the usb and .... Crap. my Laptop doesn't boot up anymore
-_-
Now i need to wait for a plug to be able to power it up again. Once I boot from the usb I'm sure I could use the laptop some more hours until the battery is actually dead. Fuck windows5 -
!rant
So I installed a Linux distro as my primary operating system for my laptop, I needed to use my windows installation... But idiot me did a full hard drive erase installation and not a dual boot didn't I...
*Sigh* now to download a windows 10 ISO!8 -
School decided to shut down their WiFi for "security" reasons (Everyone used a VPN and they were dumb fucks at networking, blocking sites like Google for having an invalid SSL certificate).
Now I'm forced to use my mobile data to keep using my Arch Linux laptop D:3 -
And finally my favorite OS on my favorite laptop.
Had trouble in the past with wifi and straight up not booting.
But Loki fixes everything, except the screenshot button but ok fine. I can at least use linux normally. Till now I was using bash on windows and tbh it was good.1 -
Alright dev's, I have pretty much given up on ChromeOS and Chromebooks, my Samsung Chromebook Plus is far from the rock solid stable and battery sipping champion it used to be, constantly crashing, sluggish, 4 hours of battery at most, terrible android performance and the list goes on (Plus fucking bullshit Pixel device exclusive features can fuck off)
I use my Macbook Pro more than ever but the lack of being able to install Linux is a massive blow, so I'm looking for some laptop recommendations and here are the criteria.
1. Don't want a tablet
2. Prefer a clamshell but will deal with a convertibal
3. Max price of $1000 AUD (~$4.25 USD)
4. If it has dedicated graphics, prefer AMD
5. Prefer windows to not be pre-installed but can deal with it if it is
Was previously looking at the XPS line but um... Base model 13 inch is ~$1600 AUD so nope .-.
Fire away people!5 -
What's the point of buying a macbook if it's going to retire after few years due to macOS compatibility with apps from appstore when you can get a good brand laptop and run linux on it forever?12
-
Well, tried to install Ubuntu on my other personal laptop today.
Never have I wanted to use Linux so bad and not been able to. Why oh fucking why must I get this error, and the shittiest thing is I have no clue where to start.35 -
Looking to do another linux dual boot on my laptop, any recommendations to try out?
Trying to move away from Ubuntu but still would prefer something debian based and would play nicely with a touch screen!10 -
A few months ago I switched from Windows 10 to Arch Linux on my main computer and the upgrade is incredible. I knew it would be, of course - I already had Linux on my laptop. But wow, on a dual monitor setup, and with the motivation to set it up nicely, it's brilliant.
My question is, what's everyone's favourite Linux distro, and why? Pictures of your desktops would be cool.4 -
I've recently gotten this idea to take a Chromebook and run Linux on it.
Why a Chromebook, you ask? Well ChromeOS is a Linux kernel, boots using coreboot, and Google now requires that OEMs support LVFS (fwupd), i.e. the Chromebook is a very Linux friendly laptop.
Some other reasons I would use a Chromebook are: it's cheap, basically useless otherwise, amongst other things.
So, what do you guys think, good idea or not?14 -
When you use a Windows desktop and Linux laptop at the same time and try to undo with ctrl-z in emacs... This is going to be a long day1
-
Q for Linux dudes ... I have a 15.6" laptop with fullhd resolution ... Is there a way not to became blind?8
-
Any suggestions on a laptop for a dev? I hope to dual boot Windows and Linux. Any suggestions are appreciated! 😃20
-
since my new laptop will arrive soon just want to know what is linux is good and widely used im thinking between arch or debian6
-
Got a new gaming laptop a couple weeks ago.
Was using Manjaro on my previous laptop and it gave me headaches. Random freezing, random shutdowns, etc. I tried several distros but every time I got frustrated. I guess that laptop didn't support Linux distros very well.
:/
I guess I'll stick with Windows.2 -
No matter who you are and if i know you, seeing you having nerd stickers on your laptop, especially Linux ones, makes you my buddy.
-
will move to linux again, this time I hope will be the last. I'm motivated from a rant in which some guys discussed about proton having a lot of tittles supported in steam
got rise of nations from steam working in laptop with freshly installed linux mint 19.3 . (same game does not run in my win 10)
will use same distro in my gaming pc and hopefully will keep on linux for a while 🤞
wish me luck9 -
Can someone recommend me a Linux distro with good hardware integration and stability for my laptop?11
-
Im gonna get a new laptop soon and on my old laptop I want to install linux (cant do that on my main laptop because Im a windows dev at the moment).
I am not new to linux and have used 3 major ubuntu versions and it was all trouble, autoremoving files after update etc.
So I am planning to go Manjaro but which desktop environment shall I use? I've heard great things about i3 and Cinnamon. Gnome is not something I liked in Ubuntu.
Which desktop environment do you use, why and how did you make the choice?6 -
I've been a long time Windows user, worked with Linux a lot while working on servers.
Installed Linux Mint on laptop. Fell in love. Can't switch because I like to game in my free time and my favorite games are Windows only :/8 -
!rant
Windows sux (still, much more usable for me than Linux on a day-to-day / fixing-my-neighbors'-tech basis), but Linux Subsystem on Windows...?
I just found out about it, and installed Ubuntu on my main Win10 laptop...
I'm not even mad - this is awesome!11 -
MacBook died, currently in the lab, have a TERRIBLE dual core T4200, 3GB ram temp laptop replacement with VISTA.
Which Linux OS should I replace it for Dev/uni sake for few days? Considering that I don't have too much time on my hand to fix the tiniest headaches that comes after a Linux installation.
Like I'm looking for a distro that just works and is good.12 -
!rant, just asking the wise devRant community for advice:
What is a good laptop that works well with linux? Thanks in advance :)11 -
after weeks nearly months of studying for exams i took my laptop and started linux.
ahhhh. nothing feels better than home -
It's really hard to explain what is Linux, after someone normal user see my laptop and ask what's windows is this 😶3
-
Nothing like having your hands full with work projects, then getting a message from your, not so technically knowledgeable, dad, which says that he's going to remove linux from your old laptop and replace it woth windows.
By himself.....
Tried talking him out of it, but je's adamant about it.
Should I call an ambulance?
I also feel really bad for my old laptop now -
So a few months ago I got a computer with Windows 10 on it, and kind of ditched the shitty laptop that had Ubuntu (I loved Ubuntu, fucking despised the laptop, since keys were sticky or missing and it couldn't last a few minutes off the charger) so just now I decided to try Linux Elementary, since I'm getting sick and tired of Win10!
Don't judge me, I'm not skilled enough for Arch...6 -
I'm currently studying for my exams and I don't have much time left before the first one.
I have dual-boot on my laptop and I almost always use Linux, this morning I used it and while I was studying I updated the software in the background.
Then I powered off the laptop.
This afternoon I powered it on and it booted to grub shell. Just updating the system screwed everything.
FOR FUCK SAKE LINUX I FUCKING NEED TO STUDY.
I'm posting this rant here because I could not post it on r/linux subreddit, I'm sure my post would be deleted and this is sad. Those people who criticize Windows refuse to get criticized , refuse to see reality. Their beloved os is not so reliable after all.
I fucking need to study and what am I doing this afternoon? Fixing Linux shit of course4 -
I'm going to hate all laptops. I tried to install linux and I have problem in instalation. Still have well working win, but im sick and tired with not working shit. It's funny, because few months ago i had win and linux xD
It's time to but New one? XD2 -
So I decided to ditch Apple MacOS go with Linux so I’m the process of trying to sell my MacBook Pro which seems like it’s going to take a while since I don’t have eBay so if you’re in the USA and are interested let me know. Now the trying to decide which Linux distro, I’m currently leaning towards Arch Linux plus looking for the best laptop workstation that’s supported by Linux seems like its going to be a headache. On a good note my unixstickers arrive in the mail yesterday.7

Windows 7 or Windows 8.1? Which one do I fresh install on my laptop?
Don't suggest Linux cuz I already have an Ubuntu Dual boot.
Don't suggest Windows 10 cuz I'll find you and murder you.
You may suggest Windows 8 so that I may judge you.16 -
So I want to install Linux (mainly bc of you guys) on my Laptop, but I don't know which one to choose. It is used mainly for coding (web and Java), Surfing and maybe 1-2 games. Any recommendations?16
-
So i left 5 tabs running on my laptop with arch linux till morning ( Two of the tabs were a YouTube video).
The battery only drained like 3 % 😦.
If were running windows on the same machine, it would have drained to 0 🤯8 -
!rant
New to linux
So I deleted all of my games, pron, and installers just to free up some space for testing dual boot in my laptop.
I will study all the basic commands in terminal and make use of my time to coding.7 -
Wasted an hour figuring out why the backed up files and pics from an OTG device cant be seen on my laptop (linux)
Fucking OTG file system formatting is exFat. (i know i should get exfat-utils) -

Hello all, got my cs bachelor degree recently. I thought about getting a new notebook. Do you have any recommendations? I have my eyes on the xps13 at the moment. Also I want Linux for the notebook so, any recommendations here too? Currently using fedora and thinking about openSUSE Tumbleweed, any thoughts on that? Thanks for your help in advance.1 -
I normally have my Windows desktop and my Kubuntu laptop, but I’m on “holiday”, and I only brought my laptop. “I can write a simple research proposal on it, right?”, I thought. Ahahahaha, no. Turns out Libre Office and Mendeley are fucking useless on Linux. I had to give up and use my mum’s prehistoric Windows 7 laptop... Also Snap is “great” in theory (basically a Linux setup.exe, rendering packages pointless), but nothing I’ve tried worked so far. Docker can’t figure its permissions out, Chromium cursors break, and Mendeley doesn’t even detect Libre Office as installed. What a fucking shit show. I love Linux for dev, but no fucking surprise that no sane human being uses it for everyday tasks.16

That moment when you find out how to put Linux on hibernate. This is a big deal for me since my battery is broken and it doesn't stay latched on.

Hi everyone!
I don't know if there is a one size fits all solution, but could get me some pointers on how to make built in laptop webcam work with linux mint 18.2?11 -
Anyone else excited about the Pinebook Pro? It looks exactly like what I've been wanting in a cheap laptop for carrying around - an ARM based Linux laptop that has decently usable specs (unlike the original Pinebook).1
-
WSL in Windows 10 to get Linux stuff. Crostini (a lightweight ChromeOS container tailored for Linux) running in ChromeOS to get Linux stuff.
If you want Linux, just get a proper laptop for Linux man.3 -
Been thinking of dual booting my laptop with Linux. Currently running Windows 10 Home 64 bit.
Which distro would you guys refer for programming?
Suggestions please :)11 -
My parents gave me a old laptop and I would play games like Adibou (Good times)
And my first exposure to Linux (or GNU/Linux, call it how you want), was my father’s ubuntu server (with gui) and I found it ugly -
- graduate from college
- live by myself
- release my first android app on the play store
- replace Windows with linux on my dev laptop
- get a job that I love1 -
To all you linux fans out there:
What DE/WM would you use for a 2 monitor desktop setup?
I’ve tried i3 and a couple major DEs (xfce, gnome, kde,...) and i don’t really have a strong preference for either.
I like the efficiency of i3 but also the ease of use of - say - xfce. I’d definitely use i3 on a laptop, but i dunno what i should go for on desktop... recommendations?6 -
Two years ago my laptop crashed and wouldn't boot windows anymore. Luckily I had already handed in all small projects and backed up the rest. However, I still had to install all my programs on a fresh new windows installation.
I decided to give Linux a try since it was an old laptop and I have to say that my data loss situation was not bad at all but getting into solving Linux errors can take quite some time out of your day, especially in the beginning. After a week of spending time here and there to improve the situation I had pretty much everything setup to the point where I could start development again. I have to say that it has changed my workflow and that I'm loving Linux now. I started out with Ubuntu and now I'm trying out some other distros on my second laptop (if you got any suggestions please let me know).
I still use windows side by side with Linux for certain tasks, but I'm not regretting losing my windows installation on my laptop. It made me realize that there's much more out there to learn and to give a try.3 -
Currently I own a Lenovo Thinkpad which I bought in 2013. As it is aging, I'm thinking about a replacement. Where would you buy a new laptop, constraints:
- Swiss keyboard (or Option to swap it for one)
- compatible with Linux (prefered if there's a option without Windows pre instaled)
- NVMe SSD
- good battery live
- abillity to upgrade the RAM in the future
I've been looking at System76 now for a while, but since I've worked with Swiss keyboards for the last 12 years, I don't want to switch to an en_us layout...
So where do you buy your laptops?11 -
What laptop should I buy to run Linux?
My experience on my desktop with Nvidia is just horrible, so I'm considering to buy a laptop with the new AMD Ryzen when I go to university next year. I'm a little bit unsure about the compatibility with Linux though. Should I go for AMD, or buy a laptop with Nvidia graphics and pray everything works fine?
Do you have any suggestions? I would like to be able to do some light gaming, but I don't want it to be to heavy and I don't want to spend to much money either (around €800).
Do you have any good or bad experiences with running Linux on a laptop?
Are there things I should be aware of?33 -
Finally gifting my sister, on the occasion of my sisters recently born baby's 21st day..,
My old laptop with Linux installed and with an update to Samsung evo 860 ssd.
She is new to linux, not so new. Hope she will find good stuff to prepare for the next job as she is on maternity leave.1 -
Theses operating systems are real! I once installed "Nyarch Linux" on on old laptop. Comes with some great pre-installed software. Such as, Catgirl Downloader, and Material UwU.😅There has got to be more joke-operating systems out there.5

I just found out there is a 500 GB hidden and encrypted encrypted bitlocker drive on my Linux laptop. Thanks I guess? 😅2

Has anyone here tried to run Linux on a Dell Latitude 7480? And if so, how'd it go?
I can't decide on what laptop I want for Christmas, it's either a XPS 13 or a Latitude 7480. I know the xps has good Linux support but the 7480 seems to be a mixed bag. If I choose the xps, I'd have to get some dongles as well sine it doesn't even have a HDMI port. Opinions? 🤔6 -
I've got 2 questions.
1. Are there any laptops better than a maxed out Dell XPS 15 for a similar price?
2. Once I buy my new laptop I want to experiment with Linux (never used it before). Is there some really good tutorial out there to help me get it working and figure out how it works and what the best way to use it is?4 -
I just switched to Linux Mint with a KDE desktop environment on my laptop since a friend recommended it and I'm loving it so far!
Edit: was previously using manjaro, I am equally loving both as of now. -
I'm fucking tired of seeing 'No Operating System found' while installing Linux! All because of RAID/SATA issues that exist due to the presence of both an HDD and an SSD. I would've have smashed my laptop but it's a $1000 one. :/1
-
I've bought my new laptop (vostro 5471 with ips, 8250u, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd) and it came with ubuntu.
I was keen to give linux a shot but I just got frustrated and installed windows. Now I feel dirty on the inside. Any tips to get comfortable with linux? Distro recommendations are also welcome.14 -
I have a craptop that I want to install Linux on. What are some light but still capable and user friendly distros4

Hey everyone.
I just had a job offer today for one of my dream companies!
They gave me a choice between a Linux or MacOS laptop. I've never owned a MacOS laptop before and I've been using Linux as my main OS for around 6 years or so now.
Also, abount a month ago I bought a new laptop on which I installed linux.
So basically, I have a Linux laptop for personal stuff and I was thinking of getting the MacOS one for work. Does anyone have any relevant experience and, if so, how did it turn out?
Thanks for your time, have a good one!8 -
Anyone with 2 monitors (or more) with laptop as the primary source. How did you connect everything together? Also, I use Linux (Antergos)
I bought 2 monitors. I was able to connect one of them to my laptop with HDMI. Now, my laptop only has one HDMI and no VGA. So I can't really figure how to use 2 monitors with my laptop (also extending it and not duplicating screens).
I've come across HDMI splitter. But I don't if it allows extending screens8 -
I've recently managed to install Linux on my laptop (after endless GPU-related errors solved by a BIOS update) and have been using it since (kept Windows only for gaming). Booting into Windows after one month feels like it's gonna make my laptop explode slowly2
-
Planning to get a laptop and install Linux on it but the question is should I install Mint or Ubuntu?9
-
My friend wants to sell her old laptop saying it's old. I'm guessing the spec to be 2GB RAM. I thought I could keep it and install Linux on it and make it a small server. What are other ideas?2
-
I've been running Linux on my laptop natively for five months (since the 2nd week I got here). My boss and everyone on my team is okay with this. I've used Linux at the last three companies I've been at since 2012.
All I asked for was a Windows VM so I could use WebEx (which I did at my last job; used Win10 in Virtual box just to share my screen via x11vnc and reset my password occasionally). At my last job, they said Linux users were on their own, but they at least gave us a Windows ISO, license and ability to connect it to the domain. It was a west coast company, with 500 people in IT and several Linux users. The IT team at my current shop has known I've been running Linux for months.
Now the word has come down that I can't have Linux on my laptop and I need to put macos back on it (it's actually on there; just dual booting) for security or some shit. We have a massive deadline and project due in like two months and it would throw me off for several days if I needed to bring in and setup a personal laptop.
Fuck asking our worthless IT department for anything. I told the lead engineer I'd bring in my personal laptop before going back to Mac.2 -
Hey fellas, I have a question about Windows and Linux.
I love Ubuntu on my Laptop and since gaming is no prio at this time I'd like to install Linux on my Rig.
I want to install Linux on a separate drive and unplug my Windows drive so Linux can boot alone without selection at Bootmanager.
However, I'd like the possibility that Bootmanager will let me choose if I plug the Windows drive back in (just in case I'm really in need of Windows).
Is it possible?4 -
getting my new laptop today. Thinkpad X1 Yoga (2nd Gen). Can you guess the first thing I'll do?
if you guessed "install a Linux distro" you guessed right. I'm looking to try something new; I'm a sucker for dank animations and polished UI/UX. suggestions?
nb4 "use arch"... no.20 -
well fuck me, I think I've a chance of killing my laptop...my personal 1... with water...It's unpluged now and hopefully get better after drying...no smoke, so that's good and the keyboard is supossedly water resistent... but still the linux froze...17

Ok, I’ve decided. I have a really old laptop that I love but is only usable for basic surfing and text editing, so I’m gonna put a Linux distro on there to experiment.
Baby’s first Linux!3 -
Is there any way to connect 2 screens to a hp linux laptop (having only 1 HDMI port and no type c) ?10

I want to buy a new laptop and would like to double boot it with Linux and Windows 10. So should I buy a laptop with bundled Windows 10 OS or the other way round. Also will it be a problem if I buy a laptop with DOS OS ( DOS OS Supported)3
-
Any suggestions for a good beginner linux distro? Ive been looking at Elementary and Ubuntu, but im needing something that can still use the laptop touchscreen.
Any suggestions?2 -
Spreading happiness by introducing linux in my friend's laptop . This was the same guy , who told that linux could never match Windows and stuff . but within minutes of installation , he is shocked by the power and ease of the command line .
P.S. I am not mentioning the distro here .. as it will attract a lot of hatred . !!!6 -
tl;dr Which new laptop + Linux distro combo should I get when seeking for minimal configuration and maintenance hassle?
Hey devRant gang!
I'm looking for a new laptop: which one is supported out-of-the-box by Ubuntu based Linux distros like Elementary OS?
Why Elementary OS you ask? Well, I want to move away from macOS and/but keep the minimal (and pretty) design/interface!
But: I don't want to waste time configuring stuff after install or a kernel update. I don't have time for that: I need to get shit done.
As much as I dislike closed source/evil corporate stuff the fact of the matter is that my MacBook Pro Just Works (and lets me get shit done).3 -
Tmw you realize your new shiny laptop has issues with linux.
Gonna have to do some grub stuff, the shipped kernel doesn't support my skylake gfx :/6 -
Now Mac OSX works on my Lenovo Y580. It also runs Windows 10 and Linux Mint. All main OSs on one old Laptop take that Apple.5

After 17 years since I got my first PC, I have finally decided its now time that I should have my own laptop. Any suggestions?
PS: I have been an Ubuntu user since 2007.
PS-2: I am from India.9 -
Soo Guys,
I am thinking of a new Laptop for developing abroad. Also because my PC is to much power crunching.
I first thought of an MacBook. Thanks to my human intelligence I have thrown away this idea.
I may want to use an surface pro (not the beefiest one, just like i5, 8gb RAM and 265ssd) or an laptop with Linux flash.
Because I am used to develop in Windows environment I might choose the surface. I really love Linux but as I progress in my (jet many, but not enough) languages I might stay at windows.
I wouldn't choose any HP or Lenovo laptop any more, only bad experience.
What do you guys think? Any other opinions?
Edit: I want to use it for:
- WebDevelopment
- Java Application Development
- C#/C Development
- Server Development
- Game Development
- Network Adminstration
- Server Administration
- Some Random Stuff6 -
Moves taskbar to top of the screen; hides start menu button. Opens laptop in lecture hall and hears a whispered "woah, he's using that Linux thing!"
I didn't correct him.3 -
I'm in Uni for Software Engineering, and while all my classes are currently online, I'm looking to get a laptop for class later on. Once I get it, I'm gonna pop a linux distro on it (gotta clean up the poor windows infected machine), but I'm curious if there's a distro anyone thinks would be best for programming? I used to use Fedora, but idk if there's anything better now9
-
fellow ranters, i need your advice!
i'm searching for an ultra portable laptop:
- 11" screen
- full HD resolution
it will run Linux (Kali or other debian based distro) and i need that just to do some work while i'm on the go. I don't need huge performance, so the budget is quite limited (~300 EUR / 350 USD).
is the Thinkpad x220/x230 still the best choice (even if the screen resolution is not full HD)? any other suggestion?
thanks!8 -
While working on our matlab project, my laptop just suddenly stop responding. Even the task manager isn't responding! Everything is fucked up and the file hasn't been saved yet. Then a friend of mine started saying that Mac is better than windows and im like:
"Bitch pls linux is the best"
I won't spend a lot of money to buy a macbook. I'd rather spend money buying a better laptop with great specs and dualboot Linux alongside Windows.3 -
I want to buy a ThinkPad in order to replace a Chromebook and put a Linux in it, but they don't refund the Windows licence 😕20

I'm on the hunt for a secondary laptop. Gonna try this Linux Arch and use that laptop for development. Anyone got any suggestion on a relatively inexpensive laptop that would fit that criteria?4
-
okay I feel dumb for this question but for my next internship I need Linux on a laptop.
I have two options.
1, Current laptop with windows dual boot or vm
2, shitty laptop just to Linux.
help me out guys :-/10 -
Lenovo Yoga and Linux
I'm looking for a laptop. I found the Lenovo IdeaPad 520s, but then I found the Yoga 520 for around the same price with the same specs. I was very interested, until I read about the whole Yoga 900 RAID to AHCI drama where people were unable to install Linux and Lenovo ended up providing a Linux-only BIOS update.
Can someone tell me if I would have problems installing Arch Linux on such laptop? Would I be better off buying the IdeaPad 520s? Both laptops don't have a PCIe SSD, they just have M.2 SSD. Does this mean there won't be a problem? I'm so confused.
This might not be the right place to ask, but everyone seems to be so kind to each other here on devrant...17 -
I can't decide if I want to buy a macbook or a good quality windows laptop and run linux on it. My current laptop is way too old and slow so I need to buy a new one. Macbooks are way too overpriced with their €1500 imo and was more thinking of a €1000 budget. I mostly develop in Java and Python (and a lot of web development). What would you guys recommend?11

Advice on great hardware for Linux kernel? I'm going to get myself a new laptop, my current one gave me great headaches due to the Realtek network card (no jeffing driver). I'd like to avoid this sort of things this time around: what should I get/avoid?2

Trying to install elementaryOS alongside Windows 10 in my Acer laptop. Installation went smoothly but now it is not letting me switch to elementaryOS.
Come on Windows 10 (or maybe Acer), just let me use Linux already.
It's not like I am cheating on you! (or maybe I am)5 -
First laptop I ever owned (around a decade old) continues to live, just in another form. After the first 6 years, the battery died, half the keyboard doesn't work, and the monitor began to fail.
But it still works, so I have decided to give it new life. Gonna make it a new body, add an SSD, new battery, substitute screen, replace keyboard... Maybe this is too costly. No, it must be done.
Finally install a lightweight Linux distro. It shall be glorious!2 -

I want to use Linux again. I tried to use Ubuntu 16.04 and Linux Mint 18 before but for some reason my Laptop gets frozen randomly (and I think the kernels used in these OS are somehow responsible for it, because it was all okay when the kernel version was 3.xx) and I didn't get any solution from Ubuntu Forums, so I gave up.
So any suggestions? Which distro should I use? I'd love an user friendly DE (Like XFCE or Cinnamon) and good software availability.
And my Laptop also has a Touchscreen. I'd like to utilise it if possible.
P.S. Please go easy on me. I'm still learning.24 -
rant: Been an Apple user for 5+ years and I haven't been too excited about the MacBook Pro lineup's direction. Not a huge fan of a gimmick like the Touch Bar, the fact that a $3,000 laptop only has a 500gb SSD, or the questionable commitment Apple has to OS X.
!rant: That said- anyone else here taking a serious look at Linux? Are you debating it? Made the switch? I really want to make the jump when I get a new laptop.4 -
I want to switch from Window$ on my laptop to Linux of some kind and I need some c/c++ IDE. I thought about CLion but I want some of your's recommendations.5

I ranted about my new laptop and linux mint on it https://devrant.com/rants/1919501 and I said there will be a rant about the OSs I tried
So my new laptop is the Xiaomi notebook pro, with the highest config: i7/16g/256g/mx150 gpu/alu body/10h battery/perfect keyboard/great screen. Its Chinese, but Xiaomi... you kinda expect flaws, problems, but i watched all the reviews and knew about all the things, and the price was 35% down (836 + taxes = 997EUR) for a macbook pro clone? its a no brainer.. but i had a rattling vent (fixed with shoe glue lol) now its just loud in windows but not in linux, strange
I changed the Chinese windows on it to EN... worked perfect... but... It has 2 slots for NVMe ssd so i bought a 500gb one for the second slot, I put windows on that (because games, occasional insta story video edit, big files, anyway...) and put Ubuntu on the 256gb original ssd.. (to develop on that) and it was slow as fuck, I got errors all over the places, problems I never had before with ubuntu.. and mind you Windows had over 3000 MB/s for read and almost 2000 MB/s for write speeds on that disk... I was disappointed af. MIND YOU all my life I had Ubuntu on secondary old/slow laptops/pcs working JUST FINE... I still don't know what the fuck happened.. the ui was choppy to say the least and I just was not ready to accept that on this HW while windows worked like a charm (yuck)
Then I went with Manjaro (based on arch, here on devrant people like that stuff, must be great)... well after I installed it, it booted up to the login page and black screen... something with the MX150 GPU according to the interwebs... by this time I was so frustrated and in time stress because of my flight home for xmas that I decided not to fix Manjaro but to go with another flavour
Linux Mint it is... everything kinda works out of the box, like they say... it has dark mode everywhere in the settings without downloading some bloated theme or plugin like on other flavours. So I sticked with Linux Mint. Im not saying its perfect, but I have it for like a month now and all its flaws are these small irrelevant settings not working, utilities like the battery showing funny numbers in the post I linked in the beginning.
Other than this I want to ask you guys. In all 3 distros I tried, they all had text scaling issues everywhere (os, apps, web). I think I have a regular fullHD display, its sharp, but I mean... I never expected resolution or scaling issues or things like that. On Windows I never had those scaling issues... other than the famous win10 "blurry apps"3 -
I finally understand why everyone here hates Windows.
I updated to the latest version on my laptop and now whenever I wake the laptop from sleep mode my screen just starts flashing like crazy and I can't use the laptop until fully turning it off and on again.
Now I have to either do a fresh install of Windows again or try switching to Linux 🤔3 -

Just Realized... I have like 1 of every device... I'm a full on fence sitter...

Huawei p20 -- personal phone
MacBook -- work laptop
Lenovo ThinkPad running Arch Linux -- personal laptop
Window Surface -- research/teaching laptop (use it when I teach and need to bring notes)
Gaming PC -- Gaming PC
And all of this took ~5 years to garner... Geez... I like all of these devices too (and sometimes i hate em) Holy...1 -

Should I switch from windows to Linux? I'm a college student doing CS and most stuff I've seen on GitHub and such mainly have installation instructions on Linux.
I've heard a bunch of my friends go "dude if you code, consider switching to linux"
Is it worth making the switch? Should I dual boot my laptop or completely switch? Or could I make do with a bootable USB drive?9 -
Just bought a Chromebook Pixel. Love the hardware - Chromebooks in general are a great way to get a Linux laptop with guaranteed driver support.
But why is it still so hard to get decent HiDPI support in Linux (or for that matter Windows) desktop environments?
I realise Apple had an advantage in using vector-based Display Postscript, but massively divergent screen sizes and resolutions have been around for YEARS now, so why is it still such a faff?1 -
Anyone ever bought a laptop from ststem76 or from purism? I'm looking for a good laptop for development and gaming. (I'm a Linux fanatic btw)7

Been using a MBP the last 5 years. I would like to move to pure Linux laptop. Any recommendations on laptop brand?
Back in the day it was always such a PITA getting Linux to run on a laptop due to non existent drivers for sound and wifi. Has any laptop manufacturer filled this gap yet?
I don't want to spend all my time getting the laptop to work, which is why I went with MBP. Reliability is my first requirement, followed closely by performance.5 -
I want to run any Linux distro but I think my laptop don't want to leave windows..... When I boot in Linux mint, it works like a charm for about 5mins but then It suddenly slows down....and..down...like exponentially decreasing until it freezes completely
Although I don't run anything, it's is in idle state

Best Linux distro for a 2-in-1 laptop that I also want to use as a tablet? Are there any that can run Android apps natively (like ChromeOS but not ChromeOS because I also wanna do dev)?2

Hi guys, I need your help. Mostly those who use MacBook for development. I'm looking to buy a new laptop and was thinking of getting a MacBook. This will be my first time owning one. I always used Windows but for almost over a year now, I've been on Elementary OS. I do programming on my current laptop in Eclipse, IntelliJ and mostly, Android development in Android Studio. Also, I'm learning HTML and CSS. The battery of my current HP laptop has degraded to the point this thing only last 30 - 40mins when unplugged. Because of this, I can't do much on-the-go. Buying a new windows laptop, I know I will definitely dual boot with another Linux distro or better full boot Linux and get rid of Windows. My question is, how is programming or development on a MacBook. How's does Android studio perform? Are there anything that MacBook users wished worked better on Macs which involves Development? Please help because I can't decide and since I haven't used a MacBook as my daily driver, I'm not sure how it will affect my work writing code in there.
Thanks I'm advance for your answers. 😁4 -
I'm looking for a good 10 inch laptop to run Linux. Standard size keyboard. I'd prefer atleast 4gb of ram and a quad core. Any recommendations?11

More of a question regarding hardware and software than a rant..

I bought a laptop that wouldn't connect to wifi without the usb wifi dongle I bought with it. The dongle worked fine on windows 10 but I erased it and installed linux mint recently. Now the dongle doesn't seem to be detected by linux mint and as a result I can't connect to wifi. What should I do?(image of the saud dongle attached)19

Greetings guys and gals.
I found an old laptop of mine and since I don't really use it anymore, I want to try "the linux" on it.
My question is, what's a nice linux distribution to make the windows transition smoother.
I have a vps so I'm not afraid to use the terminal.
I just want vscode and a browser on it, no gaming, no video editing, nothing fancy.
Thanks12 -
I was thinking what OS to install on my laptop, i am currently using Elementary OS and wanted to change

I just got a new laptop and wanted to dual boot Linux on it.
Everything seemed fine until I realized the laptop had UEFI. I always used easyBCD but this won't work sadly. MS blocked some features.
Any alternatives?
What boot loader do you guys use for dual booting Linux that works with UEFI?
Thanks in advance!14 -

- Atleast 8 gigs of RAM and option to upgrade

Recently, my hardy MacBook Pro 2012 gave up the ghost. So I'm in the market for getting a new laptop. Which one(s) would you guys recommend given the following use cases I have planned? Listed in order of importance:
- Getting used to Linux. Eventually I plan on replacing my desktop PC's Windows install with Linux and would like to try some flavors on the laptop.
- Software development w/ Java (Spring), Android, Rust, Go, Node
- Music making
- General web browsing, heavy YouTube use
- A little bit of story writing6 -

I've been wondering what laptop I would want to buy next year for uni, I was considering buying a regular windows laptop then downloading a Linux based OS, but I then discovered this laptop company called System76, which sells Linux based laptops out of the box. I'm trying the OS they've developed and I really liked it. Would anyone of you who have tried these laptops recommend it for me?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.6 -

Why can't windows just use 'uptime' to show how long the site has been up rather than having to fucking waiting for 'systeminfo' to load.... I'm considering switching over to Linux in the new year, or just buy a new laptop and put Linux on it and use it as my daily driver.4

Hello folks, have a question, I can't decide if I should install windows 7 (super stable Windows btw) or a Linux distribution (debian or Ubuntu 14), I've always been a Windows guy and was thinking of switching to Linux on my new free dos laptop and wanted to have a hand on Linux, but please I don't want that Windows/Linux fight I just need real advice. Some friends told me to get Windows 7 and a VM Linux just for practice, I also thought about having a dual boot Windows Linux server , I think it would be the best config for me.. so..?3

In the near future i'd like to switch to Linux on my primary laptop (HP EliteBook 8570w) - my uni requires it for the 2nd semester.
I've been thinking about Manjaro, or something else based on Arch Linux... The problem is - I've heard about how problematic is the installation of nVidia Graphics drivers. In my laptop I have the basic Intel HD Graphics with the 2nd Gen Intel Core i7, and an nVidia Quadro K2000 card.
My question is: will I it be really problematic?1 -
Hmm, thinking of getting a surface book and dual booting Linux on it for my laptop and then a Mac mini for iOS development for uni, what do you guys think?7
