Me: Strange, it just works fine for me and everyone else.

Me: And you're sure you didn't already start it previously?

Me: I'm pretty sure the port is busy from that error message. Try another port.

Co-worker: Already did, it didn't work.

Me: And by any chance restarting your machine won't solve anything?

Me: I don't think you'll have a better time running the docker image on windows.

Co-worker: Oh, that's not what I'm looking for. You see, I had a database on my windows partition recently and I thought maybe thats why it won't start.

Me (screaming internally) : WTF ARE YOU STUPID, WINDOWS AND LINUX ISNT RUNNING AT THE SAME FUCKING TIME.

Me (actually saying): I don't think computers work like that.

Co-worker: My computer is magical. It does strange things.

Me: That's a logical conclusion.

Co-worker solves the problem. The port was busy because Ubuntu was already running PostgreSQL on that port.

Third co-worker shimes in: Oh yeah, I had the exact same problem and it took me a long time to solve it.

Everyone is sitting in arms reach of each other.

So not only was I right from the start. Someone else heard this whole conversation and didn't chime in with his solution. And the troubleshooting step of booting into windows and looking if a database is running there ???? Wtf

I signed up for a 3 day course on c++ for revision purposes since I haven't used it in years, it was there, so why not.
So we get an email about having to install linux mint beforehand. Naturally, having ubuntu installed, i just ask if I can roll with that. And the answer is:
"Yes you just need to install the compiler, but then you won't get the credit point for the course, since you have not completed all tasks."
And an instruction was attached innthe general email on to how to create a bootable usb stick with windows and set up the partition (!) for a dualboot system for like 10 gigs of linux.
Bruh.
Da fuq.
I'm coming for the c++ not the linux. Also how do you think I've got ubuntu running in the first place? I get it the course is for beginners probably but still.
Also, after reading the instructions and knowing Windows 10 i can see bootloader issues incoming...

Hi everyone, long time no see.

Today I want to tell you a story about Linux, and its acceptance on the desktop.

Long ago I found myself a girlfriend, a wonderful woman who is an engineer too but who couldn't be further from CS. For those in the know, she absolutely despises architects. She doesn't know the size units of computers, i.e. the multiples of the byte. Breaks cables on the regular, and so on. For all intents and purposes, she's a user. She has written some code for a college project before, but she is by no means a developer.

She has seen me using Linux quite passionately for the last year or so, and a few weeks ago she got so fed up with how Windows refused to work on both her computers (on one of them literally failing to run exe's, go figure), that she allowed me to reinstall both systems, with one of them being dualbooted Windows 10 + Linux.

The computer that runs Linux is not one she uses very often, but for gaming (The Sims) it's her platform to go. On it I installed Debian KDE, for the following reasons:
- It had to be stable as I didn't want another box to maintain.
- It had to be pretty OOTB, as first impressions are crucial.
- It had to be easy to use, given her skill level.
- It had to have a GUI abstraction to apt, the KDE team built Discover which looks gorgeous.

She had the following things to say about Linux, when she went to download The Sims from a torrent (I installed qBittorrent for her iirc).

"Linux is better, there's no need to download anything"
"Still figuring things out, but I'm liking it"
"I'm scared of using Windows again, it's so laggy"
"Linux works fine, I'm becoming a Linux user"

Which you can imagine, it filled me with pride. We've done it boys. We've built a superior system that even regular users can use, if the system is set up to be user-friendly.

There are a few gripes I still have, and pitfalls I want to address. There's still too many options, users can drown in the sheer amount of distro's to choose from. For us that's extremely important but they need to have a guide there. However, don't do remote administration for them! That's even worse than Microsoft's tracking! Whenever you install Linux on someone else's computer, don't be all about efficiency, they are coming from Windows and just want it to be easy to use. I use Mate myself, but it is not the thing I would recommend to others. In other words, put your own preferences aside in favor of objective usability. You're trying to sell people on a product, not to impose your own point of view. Dualboot with Windows is fine, gaming still sucks on Linux for the most part. Lots of people don't have their games on Steam. CAD software and such is still nonexistent (OpenSCAD is very interesting but don't tell me it's user-friendly). People are familiar with Windows. If you were to be swimming for the first time in the deep water, would you go without aids? I don't think so.

So, Linux can be shown and be actually usable by regular people. Just pitch it in the right way.

A few months ago, I changed my laptop from Windows to a dualboot of Windows and Linux (NixOS). Since then, Windows has never seen the light of day.

Best decision I've ever made - Windows is useless.

Recently started using Linux for software development and it is waay easier to get things done than on windows. As a beginner in CS and a total Windows person, I am beginning to really enjoy Linux. I will definitely install a dualboot on my Laptop for the new semester in school.

Don't try to resize luks partitions like you would do with normal partitions kids.

Installing Windows after Ubuntu is not the recommended process for a dual boot Windows and Ubuntu system, but it is possible. 😂

Because I am very interested in cyber security and plan on doing my masters in it security I always try to stay up to date with the latest news and tools. However sometimes its a good idea to ask similar-minded people on how they approach these things, - and maybe I can learn a couple of things. So maybe people like @linuxxx have some advice :D Let's discuss :D

1) What's your goto OS? I currently use Antergos x64 and a Win10 Dualboot. Most likely you guys will recommend Linux, but if so what ditro, and why? I know that people like Snowden use QubesOS. What makes it much better then other distro? Would you use it for everyday tasks or is it overkill? What about Kali or Parrot-OS?

2) Your go-to privacy/security tools? Personally, I am always conencted to a VPN with openvpn (Killswitch on). In my browser (Firefox) I use UBlock and HttpsEverywhere. Used NoScript for a while but had more trouble then actual use with it (blocked too much). Search engine is DDG. All of my data is stored in VeraCrypt containers, so even if the system is compromised nobody is able to access any private data. Passwords are stored in KeePass. What other tools would you recommend?

3) What websites are you browsing for competent news reports in the it security scene? What websites can you recommend to find academic writeups/white papers about certain topics?

4) Google. Yeah a hate-love relationship, but its hard to completely avoid it. I do actually have a Google-Home device (dont kill me), which I use for calender entries, timers, alarms, reminders, and weather updates as well as IOT stuff such as turning my LED lights on and off. I wouldn"t mind switching to an open source solution which is equally good, however so far I couldnt find anything that would a good option. Suggestions?

5) What actions do you take to secure your phone and prevent things such as being tracked/spyed? Personally so far I havent really done much except for installing AdAway on my rooted device aswell as the same Firefox plugins I use on my desktop PC.

6) Are there ways to create mirror images of my entire linux system? Every now and then stuff breaks, that is tedious to fix and reinstalling the system takes a couple of hours. I remember from Windows that software such as Acronis or Paragon can create a full image of your system that you can backup and restore at any point to get a stable, healthy system back (without the need to install everything by hand).

7) Would you encrypt the boot partition of your system, even tho all data is already stored in encrypted containers?

8) Any other advice you can give :P ?

and see a busy box message, because secure boot somehow was suddenly enabled (guess the w update)..

Dual-booted Gaming Computer: A Saga of Frustration, Alcoholism*, and Relief

So a while back my gaming computer was booting Antergos Linux and Windows 10. It took me a few months, but I finally became fed up with Windows 10's bullshit of putting ads in the OS (Suggested Apps, OneDrive, etc.) and reinstating all of their defaults after an upgrade (Edge, privacy settings, the People Button in 1709).

So, I backed up my data and installed Windows 7. Windows 7 has a bright, consistent look, and in my opinion still holds up as a good operating system.

However, I couldn't boot into Antergos after that. For whatever reason, no matter how hard I tried, I just wasn't able to. So, I decided to reinstall. Might as well, anyway.

Now, I have an nVidia card, which does not play well with the OSS drivers, so it's basically normal for me to have to unplug my card and use the on-board graphics. So I do that and boot into the LiveUSB, do the install, boot into the desktop, install the nVidia drivers package, shut down.

I reinstall the card, turn the computer on... and nothing. Just a black screen with a flashing underline. I can't even get into a TTY session.

I ended up trying a few other distributions--Gecko Linux, Arch Labs, Manjaro--but all had the same issue. I was about to give up, but decided to try Antergos one more time, but with the newest install media.

And it worked! I was so freaking happy! I can finally play my Linux games again!

I hate LibreOffice. I truly despise it. I have one page with an article containing an image with a caption and on the next page is another article with some tables. I have to save it in the piece of shit Microsoft docx format, because everyone in the world uses Windows and MS Word. But everything's fine so far. Now let's try to save, close and re-open. Ok, cool, cool, cool. And what do we see? The captioned image has glitched into the next page and fucked everything up. I've tried re-saving four or five times already and it keeps glitching back into the next page in various and new ways. Fucking piece of garbage software. I hate this so much. End me and my suffering, please! I hope I never have to write documents ever again! Of course that's naive - the rest of my life will probably require a million more garbage documents. I don't want to dualboot into Windows with MS Word. I fucking hate Windows too. It's slow, it's weird, it doesn't have a normal shell (ok, there's WSL, but that doesn't count, that's just a wrapped Linux). P.S. AAAaaaaa!11A1!!

Have been a Windows user since many years. But at college I do use ubuntu and am familiar with it. So now I have developed interest in using Linux due to its simplicity and ease of use.
But for some tasks I still need Windows. So thinking to Dual boot my laptop. Have heard dual boot harms the laptop, makes it slow, blah blah.

So Is it advisable to Dualboot on a same machine?

So I dualbooted Linux Mint with Windows 10 on one of my friends computers and we were able to.boot into both OSes boot now whenever he boots into Windows 10 he gets something that's assumeably a bsod(the blue screen with the sad smiley), in order to dualboot I disabled secureboot and fastboot. Did anyone try this before? If so, what was the fix for this issue/what could be causing this to happen?

Been thinking of dual booting my laptop with Linux. Currently running Windows 10 Home 64 bit.

Which distro would you guys refer for programming?

Ditched Mate because screen tearing, got Cinnamon, but I have to say, that W10 UI appeals a lot for me, so... what kind of Windows is this?

I handed my PC over to my colleague because he wanted to format a usb stick.
Im runnig windows and arch on dualboot (at this moment in linux).

Guess what he did:
mkfs.vfat /dev/sdb
(My mainpartition)

He better should have asked me what's the exact syntax...

Finally managed to install nvidia driver on my ubuntu laptop after a couple of fucked up resulting in me formatting the ubuntu partition. Im sure there are solutions which didnt require reinstalling the OS but I gave up trying after wasting about hours tinkering with the installation, and restarting into blank screen.

Now that I can work and play dota on ubuntu, Im ready to get rid of the windows 10 dualboot

What is your main operating system and why? I dualboot Ubuntu/Windows 10 because I like Ubuntu and I use Windows for games and design.

Yesterday I took the evening to set up a backup server on my home NAS, so I could finally backup my dualboot laptop. Today I came home from work, boot up the laptop to configure the clients.... This happen, fucking black screen and doesn't even boot! Fuck fuck fuuuuuuck!!!

So I finally decided to take the plunge to dualboot my Windows 10, since I'm using Linux applications more and more than Windows applications.

I just had to choose Fedora out of all distros. It sort of worked. When I tried to install, it won't get pass the login screen (kept getting blanks). I rebooted several times and went with "Troubleshooting" and it got me passed the login screen and proceeded to install at the lowest graphical settings, i.e. 800x600

So far so good, I was able to operate stuff that I wanted but I just can't stand working in a really low resolution. My guess is probably incompatibility with nVidia driver. Tried everything, rpmfusion, the negativo17 repo, the current official fedora repo, the If-Not-True-Then-False guide, and bumblebee. None works.

Makes no sense at all. Luckily my Win10 still works. Now I'm stuck on whether to continue trying to get Fedora distro up or try a different distro and start back from square one...

Mhm my windows just went full retard on me and I was such a mastermind that before I installed win10 I installed a kali linux so that when the windows would fail to boot then and only then would kali boot up to save my arse...then again , apparently , grub dislikes windows over it so...I'm just sitting here...in my kali cave , with kali only booting when my phone is connected via usb (?) searching like mad for a usb stick...I made this whole failsafe thing so long ago I barely remember how I did it...

While working on our matlab project, my laptop just suddenly stop responding. Even the task manager isn't responding! Everything is fucked up and the file hasn't been saved yet. Then a friend of mine started saying that Mac is better than windows and im like:

"Bitch pls linux is the best"

I won't spend a lot of money to buy a macbook. I'd rather spend money buying a better laptop with great specs and dualboot Linux alongside Windows.

so my poor old hp bro is starting to give up on me after 3 years . there are both battery and performance issues. I knew its death was near when i got its keyboard replaced i saw its battery's state 6 months ago. it was fat as me . Now it can't live without the wire for more than 30 mins.

apart from that am getting frustrated with everyday performance of my system. all i open is 50 tabs of chrome and android studio where bitch gradle generates a billion byte sized files at million places and cache folders . (and sometimes a terminal and/or files and/or vscode).

I have decent specs tho i5 7th generation/8gb ddr4 ram/ 2gb nvidea graphics/ 1tb hdd. but still my ubuntu gets stuck everytime i switch between chrome and AS . (maybe i have not made correct swap partitions or maybe there is an issue due to ubuntu/windows dualboot)

what should i do ? I guess i have to spend some shit on a new battery. But apart from that, iwanted to know about performance. how to get a beter performance?

I've been kinda missing linux lately so I've been thinking about dual booting it on my desktop,
And considering I've only mainly used RPM based distros(Mainly RedHat Linux and later Fedora almost exclusively)
I've thought about getting out of my "RPM zone of comfort" and distro hopping for like a year between different other systems and seeing what else is there and how it compares to Fedora.
Any suggestions and what I should try?
I thought I'd start easy and take Baboontu (Ubuntu), mostly because I'm planning on making a Minecraft Bedrock server for friends in the near future which apparently is only available for on Ubuntu so I want to get used to it.

Currently the distros I wanted to try are:
Ubuntu -> Linux Mint(With how much @Fast-Nop has been praising it how can I not try it) -> Arch(Because I wanna see what all the fuss is about) -> Gentoo Linux -> Slackware(Because I recently learned that this thing still actually exists and is still active and gets updated, so wanted to see this Legendary distro)

Any others y'all can recommend?
I'm planning to try and use each distro at least for a month and try to only use Linux, only switching to Windows if there is *no* way to do it in the distro.

Ubuntu 20.4 is not very cool.

It might look "polished" in some (barely noticeable) areas , which doesn't matter to me as i already used better themes and icon packs. Moreover they tried make ui and icons flwt which looks terrible. It feels like to ubuntu's designers , flat= every icon in a dark gray color. Am not a fan of black topbar either, the old darkish looked much better

The worst thing is that now i have to go through multiple start screens since my laptop is dualboot :/ .

Its now like : black screen > (hp+ubuntu logo) + grub > (hp) > (hp+ubuntu logo + loading icon) > lockscreen > my system

Earlier it was just hp> grub>lockscreen>my system. The fast start up was one of my favourite features of Ubuntu, now its a million loading screens. The lockscreen is cool tho

Never used a mac computer before but I need a new laptop and I'm considering the option of getting a macbook. I use ubuntu so I would have a dualboot but I would really want to get into iOS development. Does anyone have experience with running Ubuntu on a macbook? Does it work well out of the box? Is there anything I'd need to think about?

As you can see after 2 years I have come to the point of redoing everything, wanted to ask any tips on how to setup win and any nix enviroment, win just to play some games and sometimes to reverse win specific CTFs.

Main plan was to have my lovely debian as the only system and run win10 in virtualbox - problem: windows don't like virtuals(?) and it's probably going to be unusable for games.
Also running Kali as separate virtual (why the hell I didn't do that in first place ?)

Xen is the other interesting way but I am not experienced with hypervisors.

TLDR: Would running Win10 as virtual in or alongside(hypervisor) Debian be better/same as having them separated - dual booting?

Guys i started web dev about two years ago on windows but i want to switch to linux. I thought of using elementary os, ubuntu or arch. What would you recommend?
Also how do you do your setup then? Dualboot or in a vm? I want to use docker to set up my infrastructure if possible.
Also i mainly use InteliJ for dev.

So I just installed Ubuntu with a dual boot on my laptop, and after using it for only a few hours. I can safely say that Windows 10 sucks. Can't wait to uninstall it...

I'm currently evaluating the best way to have both a linux distro for work and study and windows for gaming on my PC.
I need as little virtualization as possible on both systems (need to do some high performance computing and access hardware counters for uni and that sweet Ultra Raytracing 144 fps for games) and as mich flexibility in quickly switching between both systems (so dual boot isnt ideal too)
I tried WSL2 but had some issues and am currently trying out a Lubuntu VM on my windows host, but maybe someone knows the secret super cool project that magically makes this unrealistic wish work.

Anyone here using hackintosh?

I have high end windows desktop that is compatible with hackintosh and have been thinking on dualboot it for a while... and, MAYBE, went full hackintosh. What do you guys can tell me about it? Does it worth it? Or keep win 10?

BTW I also have a macbook pro late 2013 so MacOS is not strange to me.
