I don’t use Mendeley, so idk about that, but I‘ve never had any problems with snap so far. Also, maybe try out WPS Office, which is - in my opinion - a better MS Word clone than LibreOffice.
Also, I‘m probably not the first to suggest that, but have you ever thought learning LaTeX, especially for research papers? Admittedly, it does have a quite steep learning curve, but I‘d say after 1 or 2 days you can write your paper with it without any problems. I personally use MikTeX with either vim or TexStudio as editor. Mendeley also supports exporting references to LaTeX (according to their blog at least) -
bahua128016yThe once or twice a year that I typically have a need for a word processor, I use either Google docs or abiword.

620hun81886y@gathurian I don’t really like changing my workflow unless the gain is significant. People have recommended Latex to me, but I don’t really see any advantage over Word. I like its spellcheck, the Thesaurus and Mendeley integration, etc. Also, most lecturers prefer Word documents because it’s easier to provide feedback.

620hun81886y@bahua @JohnScott I was too anxious to even think about those. The deadline is in an hour and I was freaking out. I’ve just submitted it so all is well 😇

@jessica-laurent Although I switched nearly 9 years ago, I've never had issues with libre office.
Sorry to hear it's not working out for you, OR! -
I do find it funny though, immediately saying that you're not surprised that no sane human would use this system for daily tasks only because you have issues with it right now. (not saying that other people don't have trouble with it, just using the described context).
I work in a hosting company where we do use libre office a lot (not just for fun) and also just Linux as a system (with and with DE's) and its working great in our production environment (we can't just have software quitting or fucking up), we chose our software carefully and we wouldn't move away from Linux (yes, on desktops as well) for a million euro because for us, it's stable and works great. -
620hun81886yI am surprised that it took a whole day for someone to be offended by this. I know it would’ve been more edgy to take the piss out of Windows, but the sad reality is that Linux sucks ass for everyday tasks. Naturally, if by everyday tasks we mean serving HTTP requests then it’s fucking amazing, but I wouldn’t wish Libre Office et al on my worst enemies.

Games? Email? Web browsing? YouTube? Research? Chatting? Are these everyday tasks? Because I do them every day on Linux, and find them infuriating on windows. -
620hun81886y@bahua That’s what I mean. It comes down to how you define everyday tasks. For most people on dR everyday tasks are perfectly Linux compatible. But mainstream gaming, professional multimedia, Office, etc are constrained to Windows and arguably to Mac.

620hun81886y@bahua That’s how I feel every time I see someone bitching about Windows. It’s bad for sure, but nowhere near as bad as people make it seem to be. Linux is fine, but nowhere near as good... That’s why I have two computers for different purposes, but I never thought I’d miss my desktop this much.
-
620hun81886yFound the solution: I installed Windows 10 in VBox with Word and Mendeley and it’s working fine. Still better than Libre Office.

I normally have my Windows desktop and my Kubuntu laptop, but I’m on “holiday”, and I only brought my laptop. “I can write a simple research proposal on it, right?”, I thought. Ahahahaha, no. Turns out Libre Office and Mendeley are fucking useless on Linux. I had to give up and use my mum’s prehistoric Windows 7 laptop... Also Snap is “great” in theory (basically a Linux setup.exe, rendering packages pointless), but nothing I’ve tried worked so far. Docker can’t figure its permissions out, Chromium cursors break, and Mendeley doesn’t even detect Libre Office as installed. What a fucking shit show. I love Linux for dev, but no fucking surprise that no sane human being uses it for everyday tasks.
