Linux set up on laptop day 2: can't make the screen lock after resume from suspend, can't connect to my VPN, can't set key bindings in i3wm... But I did successfully set my wallpaper.

You just don't know how to do these things, not that you can't. Lock after suspend can be set from the power settings.

Why not lock it just before it suspends?

If you are using systemd just add a service to lock the screen after suspend (arch wiki got it), for VPN us network manager applet.

@vickylaixy, which DM are you using? And which distro do you have running - Arch?

If so, there should be a section in the wiki regarding known issues with things like this.

Took me two weeks of swearing, two weeks of 'meh', but I'd never trade it for another operating system again. I love that everything is one big open source script that one can modify and recompile at will.

@skonteam Tried i3lock, couldn't get it working after opening laptop lid. Got as far as the blank screen, but typing in my password had no effect. All my searching for answers couldn't fix it... I'll try again tomorrow.

@jjhiza Debian, LightDM, and i3wm. My laptop is also an Asus K501UX which has an NVIDA graphics card that's causing a bunch of bugs. Haven't found many docs that have helped. It's a learning opportunity.

@luc- Guess I'm in it for the next 12 days!

@vickylaixy, it could be that LightDM is loading before your graphics drivers (possible if you're having problems with your Nvidia card). It may require an edit in the lightdm.conf file.

I use Ubuntu, I have a random problem every now and then and there is always an answer for it.

I used #! For a while, it was nice too.

Both are debian based (#! Is no longer debian based i think) but I never got around to use debian :(
