Coolest thing about platforms like devrant, is that it's so easy to get people to read what you have to say, and get them to notice you.

It doesn't matter if you have a nice profile picture, have a lot of friends/followers or anything like that.

Also, its not like everything here is developer related or is super nerdy, most of the stuff you see are normal things you'd expect people to post on things like Facebook when they want to be social and connect with people.

It's sad that this is not how most social media is done.

I'm considering shutting down all my social media profiles. I can't be bothered with any of them especially since most of the social media platforms has a lot of nut heads. I'd rather be on devrant than any other social media platform.

Spent 2 years slaving for a “start up” building not only the core framework but also handling clients, operations and logistics while being yelled at constantly for not delivering even though I was clearly over worked.

Once it finally hit my head that none of this was my mistake, quit, took a few months off and started working as a freelancer for no code development platforms.

Have been working with multiple amazing clients for more than a year now who understand and appreciate the work I do.

For a developers ranting social media platforms, it sure seems strange that we can't format code snippets... 🤔

What I really like about all these growing startups/platforms like airbnb, netflix etc, is that they open source their cool technologies so that anybody can use them. If you look through their github repos, you can find a lot of cool and interesting stuff and especially it's mostly already battle tested and it works.

Imo this is some really big contribution in turn to the money they make :)

Spend 14 hours a week studying more with my free time.

The fucking previous dev on this project who set up the fucking web service that he knew would be shared among multiple platforms set it up to use an audio format that's only supported on one platform. Now I'm faced with either doing some fucking JS black magic to decode the fucking base64 audio, convert it to another audio format, and then possibly re-encode it or attempting to re-write the fucking web service and already in production app! This new trend of platforms spamming with content discovery fucking suck. Nobody wants to follow multiple profiles with the exact same fucking content, especially when most of them are just people jumping on the bandwagon with more generic content and nothing to make it distinguishable. Also if 10 million people saw something on your platform, the it's pretty fucking sure already been posted and shared on every single platform out there, why the fuck would you still keep recommending it weeks or even months later?

I know spamming users with random (statistically more engaging) content leads to improved customer engagement as people sooner or later click these thing out of curiosity or boredom, but eventually they get tired of it altogether and leave for good. What happened to Netflix will also happen to YouTube, Instagram, and all other platforms unless they significantly improve the balance between content discovery and content continuity (i.e. the content each user follows and is coming back for).

well, there was this time I was facing a bug in production, http requests kept receiving partial data randomly (so downloaded files were always incomplete), but it was working well on other platforms, turned out after 9 hours of research, that I forgot to disable caching

When I resigned from my previous job, there was this one last task I had to finish. The task was to implement an identity and access management system that would work across three different platforms they had. I used to work on one of them which had nothing of the sort but the other two had something of their own. Here lies the kicker, it had to work with existing authorization system in other two platforms. After explaining multiple times why that is a bad idea, I gave up. I created an interface, no implementation, documented how the interface was meant to be used and got the hell out of there.

Have you ever (by accident) met a friend or coworker on DevRant or similar platforms?

Most of my projects are based on one or few existing platforms, so core technology considerations are usually quick.

I like to wrap my head around the user stories first and then decide should this be more of a future-proof code, ie more extensible/generic, or just a code that will serve a few specific scenarios but would allow me to get it over with quickly.

Saying "Java is the best programming language because it works across all platforms" is the same as saying "Butt sex is the best form of sex because it works across all of the animal kingdom"

So, our university has this something called "E-LAB", a portal where students copy and paste codes from hacker-earth, in order to get marks in their internals.
The fun part is, the questions in our online portal are itself copied from hacker-earth, and other technical platforms.
And even funnier, our faculties can't solve a single problem, and they expect us to do, 80+ out of 100.

They told me Xamarin Forms could create an app for many platforms
They didn't tell me that the Forms extensions for APIs would not work at all with the Android extensions, iOS extensions and I would need to reinstall them for each platform
They didn't tell me that at the end, I have to write individual code for each platform.
I was promised an all-in-one toolkit. I'm just writing code for Android and iOS apps, PLUS forms
I can't even find a reliable PDF generator for this. Documentations are outdated and don't work, either that, for it takes a million steps to generate a PDF file

I must say the worst thing is the whole "branding" of closed and open source software. Giving systems/platforms/repositories/projects/libraries names that makes no sense, just for the sake of standing out. Just god damn call a shoe for a shoe...the difference lies in the creator/maintainers and not in the fucking name...sry

Web code editors are shit for interviews!!

I was given a timed interview test to code on a hackerearth’s code editor. First of all I have never used hackerearth’s code editor because they suck. The problem was very simple and I cleared the round anyways when an actual human saw my code. But my point is why are programmers creating shit editors for other programmers in a timed environment. I couldn’t figure out for the life of me how the fuck I should take an input and output that in this shit editor. The code logic was ready but the test cases failed.

So Should I be learning about hackerearth’s shit code editor in an interview with a timer or should I be judged on the code logic in the specified time?

I seriously find these web code editors most of them annoying. Cause they aint good enough. You need time figuring out the tools first and then code the logic.

Usually in your job you’re gonna use the editor of your choice. Not a fucking shit fucked half arsed hackerearth code editor. My rant is for those of you if you’re taking interviews on such platforms, be there. Don’t rely on those platforms. This automated crap is still crap.

React Native is BS for Android. Outdated as hell Gradle builds (1.x for certain plugins I mean wtf) and it targets outdated SDK and build tools... Why no simply code for system your software is meant to work :P

In seriousness, I get the concept of build once deploy on all platforms ala Electron but better but hell why is the tooling so outdated?

I'm seriously beginning to hate when blog platforms (like WordPress), are being used as a God damn CMS with thousands of plugins, e-commerce and stuff like that.. I couldn't care less what someone else is using, but when I HAVE TO WORK WITH THAT, then just one big God damn finger to whoever thinks this is the best way. Fuck you and your belief that this kind of stuff is awesome, easy to work with, and with no bugs.

Has anyone taken filteredai interview test?
I have an invite that I'm planning to reject because while I might be a commodity to the company I don't want to feel like one.

The process is ridiculous to say the least. I'm supposed to record answers on video for a couple of questions, take another couple of programming challenges and then fucking record myself explaining the code.
And that's not enough. I need to 'authenticate' with my social media creds like LinkedIn for instance. Oh and I also need to install a Firefox extension for the interview.

The hell? I checked out their website (filteredai's) and they claim that they cut down on interview costs and hiring time. It's a fucking shitty way of achieving that. I'm not a cam model ffs.

After years of procrastination and pushing myself. I’ve finally managed to breath life into my app.

It was a journey of 3 years coding it in android launching it to my community. Then almost competing writing the iOS app. Play store taking down the android app for 64bit BS and me not finding time to support both platforms amidst my hectic day job.

Finally scrapped both the codebase and re-wrote everything in flutter.

I am unable to see anything useful in current social networks. It all looks like big advertising platforms and I am not interested in looking on ads. This personalization is so shitty that original content is very hard to find. All is so political correct and trendy and what about uniqueness of human individuals. Shitty socialists networks. Low code platforms (e.g. OutSystems) will gradually win over developers who will look back at all the time they've wasted and think "why the fuck didn't tell me about this sooner!!!"

Disclaimer: I work for OutSystems and can honestly say that I can create a production-ready app while you're still picking the best JS framework to get started with. Been there...

I'm looking to boost my skills and improve work flow. I was wondering what sort of tools, editors or platforms would you recommend? I currently use wordpress, php, jquery, sass, react, node and laravel.

I've heard about awesome ways where you can monitor project changes, something like github but with gui for design drafts and stuff.

Also I heard about good online platform for Web development, something like online sublime text where all your files are saved within cloud platform. I'm looking for something that will unify my work throughout different work places.

Lastly, are there any good sites or new technologies that are fairly popular and good to learn or research?

Man I hate how CSS is treated differently on different operating systems using the same browser, let alone making the same UI heavy application perform identically on android chrome and iOS Safari.

Messing around with the css to figure out what all properties are treated differently, this is how the exact same code behaves on chrome on iPad versus Linux.

Why do I always get attached to dead/dying platforms 😖😫😭
I mean, I got the PSP Go a mere year before devs dropped support. (Still awesome for emulation because of the physical buttons)

I was really interested in windows phone for a while that I almost bit the bullet and bought it.(you obviously know what happened to the beloved windows phone platform)

And now suddenly a blackberry passport video pops up on my YouTube recommended feed and now I really want one.
The problem is the lack of apps, I was hopeful because it supported android runtime.
Then my hopes were crushed after I knew that its based off KitKat.
Which means one of my favorite apps doesn't work there (my beloved termux, I get a boner whenever I think about using it with an actual keyboard 😂)

Why is it, that we have specifications for HTML, JS, CSS, etc and we have browsers for more, than 10 years now AND THEY STILL CANNOT MAKE SOMETHING CONSISTENT THROUGHOUT EVERY PLATFORM!

An event is not being triggered somewhere? No problemo. An extra event there? Nay, still okay. Inconsistent state for the same operation on different platforms? Cool, simply cool!

But instead of fixing these shitty things, they introduce bullshit on top of this, like a media element requiring a user interaction to be able to play content.

Limitation as a way to force creativity. What do you think about this?

Platforms such as Vine or Twitter limits you somehow, but people still found a way to build their creativity around and grow a following. At the same rate, most Game Jams give you a theme and sometimes some kind of limitations and the result is in almost every jam at least a few interesting games.

Now, looking specifically at dev work, some frameworks or languages limit you somehow. Lets think about Rust safety or Node single threadness.

Do you think those work as limitation to enhance creativity as well? Not necessary by design.

Chinese remainder theorem

So the idea is that a partial or zero knowledge proof is used for not just encryption but also for a sort of distributed ledger or proof-of-membership, in addition to being used to add new members where additional layers of distributive proofs are at it, so that rollbacks can be performed on a network to remove members or revoke content.

Data is NOT automatically distributed throughout a network, rather sharing is the equivalent of replicating and syncing data to your instance.
Therefore if you don't like something on a network or think it's a liability (hate speech for the left, violent content for the right for example), the degree to which it is not shared is the degree to which it is censored.

By automatically not showing images posted by people you're subscribed to or following, infiltrators or state level actors who post things like calls to terrorism or csam to open platforms in order to justify shutting down platforms they don't control, are cut off at the knees. Their may also be a case for tools built on AI that automatically determine if something like a thumbnail should be censored or give the user an NSFW warning before clicking a link that may appear innocuous but is actually malicious.

Server nodes may be virtual in that they are merely a graph of people connected in a group by each person in the group having a piece of a shared key.
Because Chinese remainder theorem only requires a subset of all the info in the original key it also Acts as a voting mechanism to decide whether a piece of content is allowed to be synced to an entire group or remain permanently.

Data that hasn't been verified yet may go into a case for a given cluster of users who are mutually subscribed or following in a small world graph, but at the same time it doesn't get shared out of that subgraph in may expire if enough users don't hit a like button or a retain button or a share or "verify" button.

The algorithm here then is no algorithm at all but merely the natural association process between people and their likes and dislikes directly affecting the outcome of what they see via that process of association to begin with.

We can even go so far as to dog food content that's already been synced to a graph into evolutions of the existing key such that the retention of new generations of key, dependent on the previous key, also act as a store of the data that's been synced to the members of the node.

Therefore remember that continually post content that doesn't get verified slowly falls out of the node such that eventually their content becomes merely temporary in the cases or index of the node members, driving index and node subgraph membership in an organic and natural process based purely on affiliation and identification.

Here I've sort of butchered the idea of the Chinese remainder theorem in shoehorned it into the idea of zero knowledge proofs but you can see where I'm going with this if you squint at the idea mentally and look at it at just the right angle.

The big idea was to remove the influence of centralized algorithms to begin with, and implement mechanisms such that third-party organizations that exist to discredit or shut down small platforms are hindered by the design of the platform itself.

I think if you look over the ideas here you'll see that's what the general design thrust achieves or could achieve if implemented into a platform.

The addition of indexes in a node or "server" or "room" (being a set of users mutually subscribed to a particular tag or topic or each other), where the index is an index of text audio videos and other media including user posts that are available on the given node, in the index being titled but blind links (no pictures/media, or media verified as safe through an automatic tool) would also be useful.

As a developer, how important to you that you have the choice of tools/platforms to do your job?

I've worked on some companies that don't give a damn as long as you get the job done, while some frown upon it because they haven't tried anything other than what they have and are skeptical. Some are completely locked because their products are platform specific so it makes sense for dev to work on the same platform.

I've used multiple applications over the years but they pricey (especially if you switch platforms) and most of them don't have full cross-platform support.

Just finished a class working on a portfolio piece and that took a lot out of me combined with several life events in consecutive weeks. Spent almost a month writing real time sync between two platforms for client. Changed it n times to fit their custom conditions. They tested it for real time sync.
Now suddenly their requirement is to have scheduled sync and it is "As we discussed in the beginning".

I’m having this issue for the online marketplace I’m working on the side. It’s blockchain tech where you can purchase normal goods and services(no, not like Amazon or Fiverr, eww, this one’s more inclined with promoting organic growth for small businesses and freelancers).

I’m stuck with what solution is in the best interest of the user and the business for the long-term.

The dilemma about anonymity, online freedom and privacy is yes, it protects users from predators and attackers, but then, it’s harder for authorities to hunt down people who uses platforms for malicious intent, and also, digital footprint is helpful during litigation as evidence.

You don’t know who to trust.

-There is nothing to differentiate normal users with spammers, scammers, etc.
-There is no accountability for if they break the rules. They can easily delete and create a new account.

Platforms, communities big or small are plagued with these.
There are a lot of people out there who would rather project their insecurities on other people than to seek therapy.

Also, how platforms uses psychology tricks to make platforms addicting, it’s safe to assume that it’s bound to get toxic. Fixation on these platforms, leads to other needs being neglected or people forget to stay present.

Another thing, automated moderation is not that effective as there are still biases in data and human verification is still required. But then, human moderators get exposed to extreme violence, gore, etc that leads to poor mental health. (see Facebook got sued by moderators)

Also, I’ve had a recent experience where some unstable dev was stalking and harassing me. During that turmoil, I’ve found the many loopholes in every platform out there and how crappy their support is. Like they’ll just say, “make your account more secure”, bitch it’s your platform not providing enough security, your blocking feature means nothing coz anyone can still create accounts and message anyone.
It happened like February-August (it ended coz I quit going online and made private all my accounts). UGH I MISS ALL MY FRIENDS THO. FUCK THAT DUDE. He deserves to be in jail TBH

So, I just downloaded Enki, and I love it. It is like the duoLingo of coding. Most other platforms don't hold you to a regimen, but Enki does. My favorite is the "Does it work in IE8" game! I really hope to sharpen my skills with this app.

I first try to figure out why I really want to build this and (if the project is intended that way) why someone would use it.

Then I strip the idea down to its bare minimums so I know what I should build for it to be of any value.

And then I start building until I no longer think it's worth working on the project.

For instance:

I am kind of surprised to see that in a world where cloud and apis become more and more leading, there isn't really a commonly accepted and flexible api management platform.

There are some cloud based platforms out there that can be configured using some interface but why is it like that? Surely you aren't going to deploy multiple versions of your core with different platforms right?

That's where my latest project comes in. I want to create an on-prem api management platform which you configure to work with your api during development. Then you can deploy it to any infrastructure alongside your core api.

This way you:

- are not bound to a specific cloud
- don't have to worry about security and firewalls
- get user management and rate limiting for free

I will probably create a collab for this once the platform is mature enough.

So currently we are moving from studying on Zoom to some platform called K12Online (not to be confused with K12 because this one is Vietnamese with K12 thing is not). And it doesn't have a fking sign up button. Not on their website nor in the app. There's only the Sign In button, and even that, if you think about creating a new user through the Sign In button like some platforms do, well, you are wrong! It also doesn't work as well!

I really love some of the job posting I saw in my community. It ALWAYS ALWAYS starts with something like this.... We are looking for experience devs that can build platforms LIKE Facebook, Alibaba, PayPal, Amazon...(a lot of big names) .Gosh. Those expectations.

New dev colleague today asked me why he cannot save his work in our automation platforms.. Naturally I asked what errors pop-up. He sent me screenshot of window which appears when you want to check for compilation errors, not saving your work. Out of frustration, I couldn’t help but laugh and asked what I’m supposed to do about it.. I still had to explain him the thing. I have the weird feeling that this is a political issue.
I will not use or support platforms that are under control of the chinese government (gitee).
The only right thing to do now seems to ditch Ant.d (at least in future projects). Maybe I shouldn‘t trust or use chinese software at all.

I want to learn Angular, I bought a course on udemy but i don't know if they're useful or not

This is not a developer-related rant, but honestly, I'm annoyed, and this felt like the best place to vent.

My Twitter account has been suspended/restricted. I can still log in, but I can't tweet, follow people, anything.
No reason was given to me at all for my restriction, other than an automated reply when I attempted to appeal it stating they suspected my account of being hacked - an account I hadn't used in about a month, has a randomly generated 12 character password and has 2FA.

Here's the thing - I didn't grow up with Twitter, I've never really taken an interest in it, I only have my account to post dev stuff now and then as I know some over devs do - It felt like a good place to easily log what I'm currently working on and show off my work that I was proud of.

There aren't any other platforms I know of where I can do that, other than here (but my work consists of things that are also not dev related, so...)

I have no idea if I will get my Twitter account back; it's been over a week now since I attempted to appeal it with absolutely no response.

If anyone knows decent platforms where I can share my work and progress (dev, art, level design, etc.) and can use it sort of like a dev blog, I would greatly appreciate it.

Is anyone on here a proud owner of one of the current gen enthusiast platforms? (Threadripper or i9)

I am seriously wondering how much impact that brute power has on my build times. I just tried a ramdisk for my maven build and it seems that the faster storage did not increase build times much. So I am assuming there is a cpu bottleneck?

Imagine you're a dev for mobile apps (xamarin based) and you have a great project opportunity for a client.
The problem is that the project would (besides an app) involve a web version and you don't have any experience in web development.
How would you hire a web developer for this? Via freelancer platforms like twago, via an agency or request a project from some web design company?
Related question: does anyone know a good web frontend developer :)?

Me: hey, I noticed we are doing this weird stuff in 'platform A' can we file a story to fix this.

Dev: It must be legacy code or library implementation before my time. By the way it's the same in platform B.

Me: yeah, we will need to fix that too.

Dev: tell you what. For now let's keep our platforms uniform we will fix it when platform B is fixed.
