GNU/Linux is the correct form that describes the operating system as a whole and not just the kernel.
It also gives credit to the Free Software movement and the GNU project which is responsible for many of the technological advancements which gave rise to our world today(not just the development of the GNU/Linux os) and thanks to them people are much more aware to the dangers and privacy issues of non-free software.
Saying just 'Linux' does not give the Free software movement the credit and recognition it rightfully deserves, and further serves the interests of companies to disrespect their user's freedom. -
When people say “add two numbers” what they really are doing is adding two base 10 numbers. They don’t understand there are other bases of numbers like 2, 8, 16, 64; they usually just mean base 10. Without being specific in what bases all of these are correct:
9+2=B
5+5=12
1+1=10 -
I will continue to call it Linux. I know how it goes and I will not say that Richard Stallman has no part in the whole movement. But the fact that he gets irritated by it makes me happy. The fact that Torvalds was able to build the kernel in months time when after several years Hurd is still incomplete makes me happy. Thus, without the kernel yo system ain't shit, who is to say that Torvalds would not have found a way to implement his own system? I just can't stand fanatics, and Stallman is a big example of fanatism.

The whole world prefer Linux over GNU/Linux already acknowledging the difference and what it is,if Richard Stallman wants people to rather use GNU/Linux in general day to day life he could give them a decent incentive by shaving off that beard and getting those long hair, a decent smart look won't harm and people would start taking him seriously.

My wild guess it is called as just Linux is because it sounded catchy and easier to remember? I could be wrong 😅

purist12027yGive some credit for the creators GNU also ? right ? thats why ? Thats the least we can do ..
-
theuser47877yYeah, they deserve credit, but that's not how daily speech works.
Also, GNU Hurd, what's taking so damn long? -
elazar10307yWe are lucky not to be dictated how to call something. Linux is what everybody thinks it is. Minute technical details are not interesting.

Shodan4987yA bread bun with a sausage inside is called a hot dog, not Bread/Sausage.
Yet everyone acknowledges the contribution of the bakers and the sausage makers because the ingredients are visible to anyone that cares to see.
I feel this whole naming debate basically stems from impractical idealism and/or childish insecurity, and is one of the reasons that holds back further adoption into the mainstream.
The whole is bigger than the sum of its parts in this case, and should have its own name. Until it has a unanimous one, everyone is free to call it what they will.
If the philosophies being preached are valid and sound, it's not a name that's going to embody them, but something much larger. -
It's technically Linux with GNU added, not GNU with Linux added. The kernel is the foundation. The foundation is always first, think of it like building a house.
But regardless, it's just easier to say Linux or Linux distro. I'm sure most people who actively use Linux know about the GNU userland and the part it plays. I respect the GNU project and the FSF but I'm still going to call it Linux along with the vast majority of everyone else who uses it.
