I've always thought that would be a good way to learn about the internals of the kernel and the whole Linux ecosystem in general. I didn't realise people actually did though.

Pointless. There are literally thousands of Failed Distros. Just use an already established one.

I mean all you gotta do is install some programs, change the desktop background, and default bash prompt. Boom, new distro.
