My worst dev experience in 2021 has been a PHP-based CMS developped by lobotomized, single-celled organisms incapable of coherent thoughts.
A CMS even worse than WorstPress.

200k lines of "code", no use of packages, multiple entrypoints, no namespacing, all dependencies loaded by "include" at random places and everything is dependent of every thing else... a complete mess.

One could call it the butterfly effect CMS. Adding a space could completely crash the application.

At this point I've almost developped terminal eye cancer...

PM - We are going to launch registration of users in mobile phone. We are going to use blah internal framework as with it we will have same experience in mobile and desktop will be same.
Me - Shouldn't the experience be different on desktop its easy. On mobile following that many steps may seem complicated to the user.
PM - No but the experience should remain same.
Me - face palm(sees the overly complicated framework just for building 4 pages spends time finds bug in the framework fixes them and takes four months of frustration but launches it)
PM - We feel like ideally mobile and desktop should have different experience. This allows us to register faster on mobile. As we have already aligned with the blah framework team and think best path is to build it from scratch.

I like frontend when using no frameworks. I also like when websites use no frameworks and don't write unnecessary code. So that I can use it even if my mobile internet speed gets locked at 16K and from the consumer perspective I think especially in Europe developers should consider this. Moreover I think it's generally more fun to just write your own site from scratch, it will take longer but it will allow one to be more creative and the whole experience will be more fulfilling.

Most painful dev learning experience?

Learned that no matter hard you work, no matter how big the dragon you slain/slew, there are individuals out there waiting to tear you down. Not immediately, certainly not in front of you, and capable of going to extremes just to make themselves feel/look better.

My boss has no idea what he is doing. Scary for a senior programmer, with 20 years of experience. The guy keeps calling methods statically, in a object oriented project. And can't understand why it won't work.

From a few years of programming experience, I come to know that "we cannot write perfect code."

What I mean by this is no matter how perfectly you write code, but if you have a peek on that code after about 3 months, you will be like, "I could have done a lot of things in a better way." Provided the code is atleast of 100 lines.

Lately I feel like I'm mentally working at 50% of my capacity. I'm spending the time, but I feel a major loss in focus and motivation.

House search has never been as painful as 2021. Not only the websites are shit at stopping agencies from outright lying on their websites, but also they can't even give you a quicker browsing experience. All the click click clicks just to view one fucking option. Duplicate advertises, photos from "a similar apartment", no 3D showing, no blueprints, etc. , and all in all, awful experience all around that nobody cares to fix. 😒

Worst Hackathon Experience ever!

For some reason, Tableau is really heavy. I mean, all reporting software is a little bullshit, but Tableau... The server we had took 45 minutes to restart (no exaggerating - we timed it).

Reading the log files, yes, it WAS doing shit the whole time. Lots of shit. It seemed to be running just... Tons of software.

Tableau seemed to be aware of this because they have a page where you can check the status of everything. I assume that starts up first.

If you're looking into Tableau, two things to consider:

1) No, your braindead financial manager won't be making their own visualizations, no matter how many times the marketing team writes "drag and drop" on the Tableau website.

2) You'll make some nice visualizations but find that when you try to do more complex things, you run into constant roadblocks. If your manager asks "can you make it do x"? No matter how much experience you have, your answer can never be 100% "yes"... Or even "no" for that matter.

Not the worst experience with enterprise software, but definitely a surprisingly bad experience.

Mentors dont understand the power they have...

My mentors boss (non technical) will ask me to do something that either makes no sense or technically impossible. Without a mentor whos willing to say "that makes no sense to ask" or just "he will need an extra week to do it" can change an internship from a horrible nightmare to a great experience

A: No matter what - I allocate a little bit of time every week to something I really care about right now.

When I was green it was mostly learning. Now it's mostly codebase cleanup, dev experience improvement or dabbling with some feature that's not prio.

Might not sound like a lot but doing it weekly does add up.

Deciding if it's worth scrambling to beat them to market with what's barely a MVP and no marketing resources, or just chalking it up as fun and good experience.

What the Fuck is with recruiters saying you need more experience to get the job?! I'm applying so I can GET said experience! As a perfect metaphor: a college course should not have itself as a prerequisite or else nobody can take it!

I have been given the displeasure of updating a company's WordPress website which was built and (sort of) maintained by another company which ended up closing down. NOTHING WAS DOCUMENTED. Almost no comments added anywhere. Not even a description of the what a particular file does. File names are basically completely random. There are 3 versions of the same theme this company made and no indication of which one is actually being used. On top of this; they used plugins and modified them, so they cant even be updated without them breaking. As well; after looking around it seems they used jQuery mixed with Angular (or maybe the plugin creators did this?). The website isnt mobile friendly either; one of my tasks was to see what I could do with fixing this. Seems basically impossible based on the complete mess of a project this is.
All this being said, I just graduated from Post Secondary and have almost no experience working with WordPress, There arent even other developers to help assist me on this project.....
Gonna be quite the experience.

There are 2 client apps (one in ionic+react the other one just react) and the server code (nodeJS)

We're looking to change the domain provider we use to register new client's domains to one that has an API.
So far it looks like it'll either be namecheap or AWS's Route 53.
We're also looking for the same thing with mail inboxes.

Took a week off from my retail job, swatted up on some HTML, built the most basic About Me/Portfolio that I could.
Having no background or experience meant that I needed something to send to people when applying for jobs.

After complaining I got to work on my tech stack but no signs of jamstack/headless. Even worse experience!

I had interview with a company after I graduated. Although I may not be a top tier student, I considered myself is better than average students because I have a few years of programming experience and I have some projects with a few thousands of download.

However, the IT industry in Hong Kong is very conservative. They concerns more "years of job experience" instead of actual programming experience and general knowledge. During the interview, they just ignore what I did in the past few years, and considered me of classic book nerf with no real programming ability. But what really piss me of is the interviewer told me I would have a Java programming test before I left, however, the lady later came in just asked me out and told me that the interview was done. I just felt unrespect.

How should you treat proud developers with no real experience?

Best Experience: When I finally got my own machine so I could do whatever the heck I wanted to it. Learned and applied more than ever.

Being by far the most junior dev on a small team is tough. On top of no real pro experience having to learn an unfamiliar framework and the overall architecture/design.

So, this is a story of an experience a friend of mine had with Android Studio.

As part of our semester, we are required to make an application through Android Studio, and had no previous experience with it. We started to download and install it all which were a nightmare on its own to make it work.

While i got it to work in the end, she encounterred a big issue. Her pc was named after her name, which contained letters android studio did not understand (æ,ø,å) and made it absolutely useless.

After installing and uninstalling multiple times, she ended up making and entire new user called "F#ck Android Studio" just to make it work.

No idea if there was an easier way, but damn its been hell for her

My dream has come true - they asked me about what games I like and we have talked about mentioned titles for about ten minutes. No idea if I presented myself good enough but experience was really awesome.

I have zero experience working in a company. I did a few freelancing projects. My friend forwarded my resume to a company. They contacted me after some time, and gave me a technical challenge. I have solved it, sent it back to them, now I am waiting for their answer.

What's the thing? After going to the company website, I realized they require at least 3 years of experience. But they still contacted me knowing that I am still a student and have only done freelancing work.

No matter do they accept my solution or not, this is a lesson for me and for everyone else: do not let required years of experience discourage you from applying to a position. You can still get a chance.

I only have a coding bootcamp and a 4 month internship. All companies want people with experience. You won’t even have an interview without experience. So what’s the strategy then? Looking out for some words of wisdom from fellow devs.

Anyone with good/certain experience in using UIkit?

I have started using it for one of my client's projects. There is no one I know of using it. So it will be awesome, if anyone can spare few minutes and discuss with me. (or answer my stupid questions :P)
