*Me using dark theme on everything*
Me: Hey, look at this, I finished that thing that you wanted me to do.
*Project partner looks at my screen*
Partner: Ugh, why do you use that dark theme? It really strains my eyes.
That is one of the reasons I use dark themes15

Thank you so much to all the contributors, especially @Dacexi for designing the app and @sirwindfield for setting up our build infrastructure.
We plan to add more features in future. For example, searching rants, edit/delete rants or comments and most importantly, themes. Right now it has a dark theme by default.
Thank you to the users to opened issues on GitHub during development. Your feedback has helped a lot.
Whenever you find a bug or want a new feature, please open a new issue on GitHub and we will look into it.
Contributors are always welcome. I am still working on writing a article about the structure of the application, I will let you guys know when that is done. It will be easier for you to contribute when you have a bigger picture.

Things I've changed since joining devRant:
- started coding more;
- switched to dark themes;
- switched to DuckDuckGo;
- possibly switching to Mint.8
Light themes in any code/text editor.
Can you take a look at this?
Sure no problem.
Proceed to have my eyes melted by a burning white light.9
Light vs dark IDE themes
I personally prefer dark and all my coworkers use light. When they ask me to look at something, it hurts my eyes just scrolling for 5 minutes on their computer.19
Sister: (she must migrated from iOS to android) you can download these apps and then you can change like colors and themes and everything 😍😱😵
Me: Yeah off course you can...?
Sister: Oh not, oh no, you're not going to tell me you've been able to do this for years?!?
Me: Uhm... Yes...?
Not an apple hate rant, just found the convo funny!6

Since every piece of software is developed by us, I sincerely request everyone to keep dark themes as the default theme.

If you're on Linux or MacOS, download the update from https://devrantron.com/14
I made a thing.
A recent user threatened to "hack" me using "Tampermonkey"... and while that is silly, it did get me thinking about trying out some User Styles for the first time in a while.
So, I present to you rapscallions DarkTronRGB.
Three Dark Tron Style CSS User themes for devRant that work with Styler and Stylebot browser plug-ins.
Enjoy. Or don't. I don't care.
Hey, it's me. It's been awhile. How have you been..? :3
For those of you who don't know/remember, I'm the lead developer of a Desktop and (to-be) Hacking Simulator Game. My project should still exist somewhere on here. I just thought I would hop on, and catch you guys up on my progress. ^~^
So far themes are a thing! You can add custom fonts, wallpapers(or just a desktop color) and set the color/opasity of everything in-game!
I have also implimented a modding API. It's under-documented, but it works very well! You can add apps, commands, or even redesign the entire interface using it. It executes modded functions on specific events, so you could really have it do anything.
As of yesterday, there is also a simulated FileSystem. You can navigate it using in-game terminal commands, and you can create and remove directories.
(in-game screenshots are also a thing, you can even set a timer - ps: this is a 100% mod! As are all apps and commands in the current unreleased version. PM me on Telegram @TheCyaniteproject to get a copy~)25
I love how i always gotta drive east in the morning and west in the afternoon. And then people ask why i use dark themes, I WANT MY EYES TO REMAIN FUNCTIONAL DAMMIT.4
The inofficial devRant Toolbox for Firefox has been approved by Mozilla and is now available in the public Mozilla AddOn section:
It adds extended controls, themes (black, solarized, comic), dual frame layout and some more additional features.
A chrome version is also available:
Update on my previous rants: finally got it working! after spending 2 days compiling the kernel and trying to fix some issues, I just reinstalled my laptop with a fresh antergos image, installed the kernel and both the speaker and headphones work just fine! no distortion, no weird chrome video speed ups, just works - it was probably just something I had installed ages ago to make external usb sound work.
I also used this opportunity to apply the missing grub theme and found this: https://gnome-look.org/content/... it's perfect with almost any custom background too.
Why is this a rant? well some asshat at gnome decided to remove the "global dark theme" option from tweaks, so now thousands of themes are broken if you want the dark theme, since the developers now have to offer the dark theme seperately, well numix-frost has had this reported since the 7th may and no response since, the hack to make it work is to replace the gtk.css with the dark equivalent gtk-dark.css for now..31
Dear software companies,
As much as I appreciate all the dark themes being used lately either as default, or added as options (Youtube, Discord, Postman, Windows Explorer, etc)... you guys still suck at theming.
A #000 background with #fff font is almost as bad as the reverse. Too much contrast! Then there are some apps which use grayish tones, others brown/orange stuff... pretty ugly if you use it all next to each other.
So how about just adding good theming support? Or even better: what about a global theming standard, a styling preference, a system wide json file which defines UI elements for all apps?4
Have guys ever thought that all te devs are vampires...
reason 1: Loves Darkness (dark theme)
reason 2: Most active during the night
reason 3: If the dev finds a capable victim then they can make them fellow dev.25
Wtf y'all see shitposting and then you decide to continuously upvote it.
Look retards. Part of being a Computer Scientist, or whatever shit branch you are part in this vast field...is detecting patterns....if you see some dickwad shitposting the same shit over and over or using fucking retarded ass themes, or some jase shit then downvote the shit out of it.
Someone can make his theme to be just posting ascii penises and you retards would upvote that shit to oblivion.
Stupid ass community.
"THeN lEave" <--- i was prob here before you dickhead....go suck on cock somewhere else.
Damn y'all are fucking idiotic...this what happens when we make retards believe they can be engineers54
SLACK HAS A DARK THEME! ALL GLORY TO THE AMAZING SLACK TEAM! SLACK FOR PRESIDENT!
OH GOD THIS THEME MAKES ME WANT TO SCOOP THE EYES OUT OF MY SOCKETS THE FONT LOOKS UGLIER THAN THE PILE OF SKINFAT I SCRAPED OFF MY MOUSE ITS AWFUL I NEED HUGS SEND HELP
Thanks, companies, for trying, I guess.
I love dark themes, but the ones provided are often even worse than the light themes.
They go overboard with extreme black/white contrasts, pick a super weird hue of puke-gray, or certain elements are unreadable.
So, please, instead of wasting the time of your designers on something that's clearly too difficult for them.... how about just making it easy to create community themes for your app?
Especially if it's an electron app, how hard is it to add a config option to import a CSS file, and provide one template as an example?8
Hating WordPress is cool these days, but:
1) Shitloads of themes for clients to choose from (I'm not good with designing and where I live you are more likely to meet a unicorn than a front-end developer that can code).
2) Non technical people can understand it's admin interface without lots of explaining.
3) Huge community makes it extremely easy to find answers even when looking for pretty specific stuff.
For me it's a valid option when making something simple.18
You'd think that with OLED screens becoming the norm for smartphones people would start offering dark themes in their apps to save a bit of battery and prevent burn-ins, but NOPE there comes Google with their material design and everything is suddenly brighter than the sun, especially YouTube where 3/4th of the screen is static most of the time.
Thank God you can still mod things.7
So, taking an entry course for Java.
Also, you people have corrupted me... Now I have switched everything to dark-themes.12
TAKE A LOOK AT MY OTHER RANT FIRST!
SYNTAX THEME SELECTION
In this rant you can set your theme for the syntax highlighter!
Just ++ the comment with your preferred theme.
The bot checks for the "<user> ++'d your comment!" notification and stores your selection!
(When you ++ multiple themes, your theme will be the one you ++'d the last)
Then, next time you request a syntax highlighting (see other rant on how to do that), that theme will be used!
Please don't post any comments here if possible!!!
(You can post comments and ask questions in the other rant)
Feel free to ++ this rant tho ;D
Have fun and thank you for using this bot!28
I don't know what Google's design team has taken for drugs lately, but I want some!!
First, replacement of the blobs into this trash that they call emoji nowadays. 10-20 years ago we called it the crap stickers from MSN.
Next, Android Pie would look like iOS, but in the most grotesque way possible.
And now it's creeping into the apps.. Google Play, YouTube, Messaging, …
It all looks so.. white, and round, and childish. What happened to sharp corners, using all the screen real estate, and.. those colors?! God I can't stand how white the Google apps are starting to look. But I know the solution. I'll accuse Google of being RACIST!! Because black people would be so offended by the lack of dark themes. GOOGLE, YOU PATRIARCHIC, NON-INCLUSIVE, RACISTIC A-HOLES!!! CHANGE YOUR COLORS NOW!!!
I can see how that could actually work nowadays 🙃9
So, a friend of mine just called me and asked what is it that I do in programming, and if I knew Java, because her stepfather owns a company, and they're currently hiring. Since she's not a tech person, I answered "basically, websites", but the stepfather was asking something else in the background, and she couldn't understand what the heck he was saying, so she put me on the phone with him.
And then, he asks me this wonderful question:
"And programming languages... ?", as in "do you know any?"
... I was like... Wut?...
I mean, I see where he's coming from. He probably meant compiled languages or something, but still... I felt like screaming at him "WEB DEVELOPERS ARE REAL PROGRAMMERS AND DESERVE SOME LOVE TOO YOU KNOW?! 😢"
I decided to go with a "nah, not compiled languages, no..."19
Once i met a cool guy on a gamejam, we figured out that we both prefer tabs, yay, but then i saw it... He uses Light Themes in his ide =( ok but we can b friends7
Found an actual usage for light themes: bright sunny days when you have the opportunity to work outside. Unfortunately however, this much exposure to sunlight hurts the developer4
Me: I'm not upgrading my MacOS beyond Yosemite, I am happy with my custom themes and plugins.
Manager: Guess what? You get to integrate ApplePay on our store's site. Don't forget it only works Sierra.
Pale night themes
>= blackest of black themes
>= no screen at all
>= satan's glowing asshole
>= light themes
Finally made my laptop a dedicated linux machine, time to start working on a theme then to start on OS development until Gamemaker comes to linux! :-P14
I didnt understnd why people hated white themes because the are too bright, not untill I looked out of the window today and my eyes were bleeding because the snow made everything as bright as if I would stare into the sun!2
Wordpress does not suck. If you know how to work it.
Past period I saw so many rants on WP. My rant is that it is not 100% WP fault. Yes there are seriously structural problems in WP but that does not mean you cannot create top-notch websites.
At my work we create those top-notch WP sites. Blazing fast and manageable. Seriously we got a customer request to make the site slower because it loaded pages to fast (ea; you hardly could see you switched pages).
- We ONLY use a strict set of plugins that we think are stable, useful.
- We have everything in composer (and our own Satis) for plugins.
- We use custom themes & classes. Our code is MVC with Twig.
- In our track history we have 0 hacked websites for the past 2 years.
- Everything runs stable 24/7
- We have OTAP (testing, acceptance & production environments)
- We patch really fast
These are sites going from $15k++ and we know our shit.
Don't hate on WP if you have no clue what you are doing yourself.
That is my rant.23
when you're a programmer surrounded by designer friends, it feels frustrating sometimes.
people appreciate what they do more because they can clearly see the end product: beautifully designed ui, animated splash screens, clean colorful themes. even though it probably does squat other than to print statements.
then they look at your overly simple design and cant see the beautiful underlying code within.
Some people say they use dark themes because it looks cool, but we all know it's for when you're up late programming and don't want your eyes shot to pieces.10

I NEED SOME FEEDBACK!!!
Therefore a feedback is my term of use.
Please post it as a comment (or in the google group).7
I have gotten so used to code with dark themes (I even made Devrant from standard light to dark theme) that everytime i see someone with a light themed text editor, my eyes cry a bit.6
Fuck wordpress themes without documentation.
(Fuck wordpress alltogether but hey when it's mandatory it's mandatory)6
Read some books
Get a computer
Write some codes
Argue Vim vs Emacs
Debate 4 spaces vs tabs
Use dark themes
Now repeat after me, "I am a programmer...."4
I'd like to apologise for devRantron updates being a bit slow, both me and tahnik are still in school so we don't have much time right now.
We'll be working on implementing themes during the Christmas break and we'll also try to squash some bugs.
Hope you understand 🙂
PS. Thanks for the awesome support and feedback were getting ♥️6
I do NOT like podcasts, I do NOT listen to them, I do NOT want to, I do NOT want them as a non-dismissible FUCKING banner PERPETUALLY AT THE TOP OF MY HOME FUCKING SCREEN
IN F R O N T OF THE FUCKING MUSIC?!?!?!
AND I DEFINITELY D O N OOO T WANT your SHITTY RECOMMENDATIONS to have PORNOGRAPHIC IMAGES AND THEMES when I often have the Spotify homepage open on my DESKTOP I don't want to explain that to people who happen to glance at my FUCKING screen.
Holy fucking shit just give me music recommendations and FUCK OFF.10
How we feeling about the Halloween theme on GitHub?
I wish I had enough time to do some festive themes on my companies apps.5
Anyone else kinda totally sick of the "AAA my eyes" white theme shit? I mean, I love dark themes as much as the next guy but this is getting onto semicolon joke level...7
The main reason I want to be an app developer is so that I can enable dark themes by default. That way people can see for themselves and the dark side can take over!3
Would you rather only be able to use Internet Explorer for the rest of your life or only use Light themes also for the rest of your life?15
Google's slogan is (was?) "don't be evil" but all of their new MD apps are blindingly white light themes!
Retinas?, no don't need them. Thanks Google.15
Been wearing sunglasses to the office for a few months now because I'm sick of bright screens, light themes of co-workers, the daylight outside that shines through the windows (I moved to another desk further away from the windows), the ceiling lights that are always on (even when there's daylight from outside, thanks boss) and people expecting me to have my eyes open in meetings when there's nothing to look at so now I can just close them and switch to "standby" while I'm still listening.
I am a devampire.7
It's my second rant about Windows here in two days, but here we go:
Windows used to be a cool OS (and in part it still is). Yes, it's made for the end user, not power users, yes it has many flaws. But it was my gateway to computers and programming. I have fond memories of my first PC, playing around with the old win98 themes (my favorite was the baseball one!).
However, I am very disappointed now. I just had to basically force Windows 10 to stop hogging my bandwidth. It was an actual battle, with the OS simply (I kid you not) running update and other services EVEN AFTER I SPECIFICALLY DISABLED THEM. I just saw the Windows update service running, while its status was disabled. It's absurd.
Sorry Windows, but that's not what I want. I want to choose what happens on my own OS. Linux gives me exactly that, why can't you?11
My friend a backend dev who manages a little UI by using bootstrap themes. One Saturday he calls me up says "Dude, I need your help, we had a demo and the CEO decides to demo the project to prospective people on Internet Explorer. It looked alright on Chrome but the whole UI has gone haywire on IE. Need your help asap. Join me on screen share". I checkout his HTML code and find a file where the link tag is inside the body tag. I ask him to move that into head tag as in wherever the master template is, I tell him to change the doctype, add responsive meta tags, and even after all these, it just doesn't render bootstraps media queries. After beating my head for around 15mins, I see a drop-down caret in IE's inspector with 7 besides it, someone had set the compatibility mode to IE7. Why in the world would someone set an IE11 to IE7.
My friend heaved a sigh of relief and walked to his boss to show that he isn't a bad developer, his boss is just a bad user.3
Hmmm... the GNOME paradox: make a desktop that is total shit without extensions and themes. Provide no stable API for them. Break them upon every release.
Top it off claiming that themes are bad anyway because if not all Gnome installations look alike, that hurts your "brand recognition". WTF?!26
I like dark themes but I really don't like it when the black of the desktop theme is clashing with a different shade of black in the program2
"I'm done with all this BS. Visual appearance doesn't matter, will uninstall all themes first thing in the morning"
* stays up until 4 AM googling "geometric theme for zsh"*14
The new Miui 10 is truly beautiful, sadly almost all dark themes now break something though, so hope somebody will come up with a proper one asap24
Why the hate for light theme?
The whole freaking Internet is using light themes. Switching between dark and bright is tiring for the eyes. Simple as that.11
I just found this `Cyberpunk` VS Code theme and I'm a fan 🤩
So, company I work at, is on desperate need of PHP developers, who can work in WordPress and Magneto. Company announced vacancy.
Only 20 CVs were dropped 4 days before from today. So company called all of them for interview and I was one of the interviewer. Most of applicants told me that they know Laravel but not WordPress.
I was like fine. Maybe they can work on WordPress too. But I was wrong. Here are some funny interviews:
Me: how many types of inheritance does PHP support?
Applicant 1: 7. Single, multiple, etc..
Me: Do you know difference between interface and abstract class?
Applicant 2: (he just said some gibberish)
Me: why do u prefer Laravel to WordPress?
Applicant 3: because by default Laravel support payment gateway, so we can create e commerce application faster. WordPress doesn't support payment gateway.
Me: how many WordPress site you have worked on?
Applicant 4: I have 4 themes in WordPress.org
Me: Do you create all of them by yourself?
Applicant 4: Yes
Me: Do u know difference between require and include?
Applicant 4: No
Me: Do u know difference between query_posts and WP_Query?
Applicant 4: No
Me at the start of making first Wordpress theme: "I don't know why people complain about this?! It's great fun and easy!"
Me a week into developing said WordPress theme: "Damn it, they were right."
Hmmmmmm i just got offered a position for a php developer........but something that was not listed in the original application was that it is expected of one to work with wordpress. My wordpress experience is limited to creating simple themes.
I don't like cms systems also. But the position pays really good.
What to do what to do hmmm9
4th grade. My parents left for the night and got a babysitter for me and my younger siblings. The babysitter showed me a game she likes in IE. You could make an account, raise a digital pet, a "neopet," play flash games for points to buy items from other users who listed them in their own stores that had custom css/html, including bg music. This was the first time I had really witnessed what the web could look like. Animated tiled gif bgs really amazed me so I took to google with which I discovered sites where one could copy css and html snippets for themes. I stored each new html tag I discovered via w3cschools.com in a powerpoint where the snippets I found were pasted somewhere randomly in the ppt. From there I learned html, CSS, and a billion other things. To date I've made websites, apps with several langs in win/Linux/osx/Android (but not ios yet). I've managed servers, and databases , and DNS records. I've in even ran website with 100k requests a day.3
It wasn't me in the interview and it wasn't really an interview at all but here we go. I worked for a pretty shit company this past summer as a paid internship and while I was there they fired a Dev because he complained about how he didn't get a BMW i8 and they had to hire new help. So instead of doing a regular interview what they did was call people in and just have them work. Like no joke from 7-4pm they just did the job the didn't get yet. They also expected them to know how to work in there system. It was a WordPress development company and they had custom plugins and themes that they just expected people to know.
Also they said they would pay them for their work but I don't think they did, there were maybe 8 different people over a week who probably just worked for free.1
Visual Studio Code - ever since the beta.
VS Code is... amazing. There's no words to describe it. It's just amazing.
VSCode since the inception was just this tiny version of Visual Studio that you can transform into your own little IDE. That was the whole point of VSCode - it was a extensible editor. For many years I've used it and never looked back, I still use VS from time to time but Microsoft really nailed this one.
Most of the editors I knew lacked good auto completion and good linting, which IntelliSense was good, and it became even greater once support for languages started piling up. Themes also were top notch, I still remember you can't theme the entire window just the editor, nowadays you can.
And last but not the least is the Remote integration. I didn't need to leave my OS just to do work from another, I just need a SSH agent and it works. It's very straightforward and easy.
Overall Visual Studio Code is a editor that is more about choice and your own style - which makes it unique from IDEs, its fresh and its definitely earned its place as one of the most sought after tools in development.3
I actually like light themes. Especially on bright days, they're a life saver, but... what the fuck.
I hear white noise when I look at it.2
I finally got to releasing a devRant client for Android!
Note that many features are still missing but will be comming soon.
Main features (but not limited to :) are
fresh UI w. themes
animation of @SIMMORSAL (devRantNative)
basic code highlighter (alpha)
landscape + resizeable without breaking
userinfo in feed (optional)
Github and Apk https://github.com/joewilliams007/...9
I can't bear to spend longer on game character creation than a few minutes but oh, the amount of time I spend on customizing my desktop environment with gtk themes and so on...
I forgot to eat today, but I have boiled down the devRant theme system into just a few classes... and the "window" one is redundant-ish
Now that I can dynamically theme Qt widgets, my client will be able to support custom themes, confirmed!2
VS Code looks amazing with dark themes and vs code file icons. Using the theme by Kary Foundation and it is awesome.11
Yeah.... I want to confess i like light themes better. Anyways the colour/theme of your editor does not make you a good programmer.11
Do you guys have a idea how I can call my new snippet manager application? The application allows you to save code and URLs to view Inside of the application. Also the application is highly customizable supporting 42 coding Languages and over 42 Themes. Currently its named: "SNIPR". But i would like a Name thats not directly connected to the application and what it does. Maybe you guys have some ideas? Because im not that creative😀😀👌
This is a example of the main ui using the dark theme26
I just wanted to quickly install a little Ubuntu on my notebook for some testing.
And here I am hours later installing unity themes.
I think I could get used to this.7
Whelp. I started making a very simple website with a single-page design, which I intended to use for managing my own personal knowledge on a particular subject matter, with some basic categorization features and a simple rich text editor for entering data. Partly as an exercise in web development, and partly due to not being happy with existing options out there. All was going well...
On my TODO-list: Comment and/or upvote system, spoiler tag, GDPR compliance (if I ever launch it haha), data-limits, a simple user action log for admins/moderators, overall improved security measures, refactor various controllers, clean up the code...
It STILL uses a single-page design, and the amount of feature requests (and bugs) added to my Trello board increases exponentially with every passing week. No other living person has seen the website yet, and at the pace I'm going, humanity will have gone through at least one major extinction event before I consider it "done" enough to show anyone.
Messing up my XFCE themes to make them look flat and simple (TBH I kinda like the Windows 10 look, and feel like most GNU/Linux themes have stopped somewhere in the 2010's.6
I have a confession to make.. I have sin.. after 8 years of coding in the dark I've joined the light..
How did this happen? Well whenever I would decide to change my dark theme to another dark theme in VSCode, normally I would arrive at the light themes in the list, and for some reason the reading felt more pleasing to my eyes, so I started researching as to whats the best theme for the eye, and why does the light theme feel "more right"?
So it turns out that there isn't any difference for the eye, but that maybe because of the white paper black letters the eye finds it easier to focus on the letters rather than visa versa.
And here I am coding in the light for a month now and it feels great I guess?
Keep in mind I was one of those that would see light theme users as mudbloods and muggles. But I can't deny that the light theme + blue filter makes my eyes more rested.9
This is for all those people that like dark themes and when asked why you say it's because light attracts bugs.
I would like to explain how that is just so wrong. Bugs attracted to light are moths and a few other flying bugs.
The rest of the bugs live and thrive in darkeness. Cockroaches, bedbugs, spiders etc.
In fact mosquitoes hunt at night and prefer to hunt in the dark.
I just had to put this out there.6
if false? if false what? (false is just not defined, but this is the sort of shit I come across in the twig-theme-saas world, makes me angry)5
If you're using the adwaita-dark gtk theme, you may have noticed that the text entry fields on lots and lots of sites make your text almost impossible to read, using firefox. You can fix that by creating/editing the, "widget.content.gtk-theme-override" key(in about:config), setting it to "Adwaita" and restarting firefox.5
So I agree with some arguments against using dark themes but only because they all seem to be about white text on black, but I would never use that as a dark theme... (who would?) Dark shades are where it's at! Take devRant itself as an example.
I had a hockey accident where the hockey stick hook caught me in the eye and among many other things, tore my iris to the point that the doctors couldn't stitch it (something about cutting being reparable but tearing not :/ )
Luckily with some exercises, it healed a lot in its own but still let's in about double the light it should. Since then, black on white for more than a few hours will, without fail, give me a migraine. But then so would white on black, too much light allowed in means that white on black give an almost blurry effect on the characters. Hence, colour shades for the win :D
Just my 2 cents ¯\_(ツ)_/¯1
For those of you wanting dark themes for sites without them, look into the Stylish FF/Chrome extension. You can install themes for sites on it where it would otherwise require manual customisation.
I've currently got dark themes for Facebook, WhatsApp Web and Reddit.6
Finally got a new job! Outta here!
Just got out of a meeting that I drove half an hour for (that could easily have been a damn phone call), for hand off stuff with the agency my company has hired to replace me.
I've talked to their senior dev a few times in the past, and he always struck me as an arrogant asshole. I assumed this meant that he had some level of competence to justify this attitude, but evidently not. Turns out he and his employees are a bunch of fucking idiots who don't even know how to use the command line, or anything but a cms with stock themes.
I'm taking all of the specific public stuff I've done for my employer off my resume as soon as I get back, because these dudes are going to fuck it up worse than a soup sandwich.
So a colleague and me are coding a Text Editor in C, and since i was adding a few Themes today i was wondering, what y'all using in your go to Editors and IDEs? Maybe i could include a few slightly modified versions of these themes aswell (modified in the sense of adjusted config)
The Editor is called MOSSY Editor, if someone's interested. MOSSY was some abbreviation for Model Based Syntax, since it's python implementation used a full parse tree in the background.14
My friend works for my favorite company Apple, his boss ranted Apple is about giving options.
I figured out some missing options in my iPhone X
Need to listen music: sorry can't plug in a headphone we removed that option 😉
Other phones have option to unlock through face or finger print (oops we removed one option)
No option to take a photo in 16:9 aspect ratio (4:3 only)
No option to change themes or layout to personalize your phone
Any positive thoughts on this option statement? If I missed some option examples 😅11
It's been so long without an update on my little encryption project so...
We accomplished the following:
- big fixes and bug fixes
- drag and drop in files and folders
- screwed over many times
... And finally ...
- THEME SUPPORT!! WUHUUU
(Look attached screenshot)
Currently I just implemented two themes but a theme explorer will follow.
I'll create 3 themes for this project, normal, dark and Alice themed.
Stay tuned ✌️5
WHAT THE FUCK???? UX level: 9000
I do like dark themes in many places. But IMO this is just too much
And the font..? Is this registration for witch-hunt or satanists' party?17
I use WordPress for my clients. No prob there. I hate it when I use someone else's paid theme and I have to beat my head against the CSS because they've used a lot of #id and !Important in the main css file.
Makes a child theme almost useless.1
So saw that google released 'official' themes for chrome and thought fuck it, lets try it out...
Chrome will only use CSD if you use the default fucking GTK+ theme else it will revert to chromes custom icons...
Just how fucking lazy do you have to be for this to still be a thing?!2
Does anyone know about HTML alternative stylesheets?
(Users can pick different css files)
After 3 years of web dev I just found out about this. It's awesome!4
A long time ago I started a project to make a devRant client with Python and Qt5.
I got far but got bored, or whatever. Was still in school, etc.
I have started from scratch again. Including a nogui mode. Sharing because I actually have made some pretty good progress in the past two days.
Plans: Besides the obvious fully-featured client: full support for plugins, custom themes, custom CLI commands. Multiple logins.
Considering a system that allows you to run a bot, and a bot framework (parsing arguments for you, marking notifs read, etc.)
And yes, it's called qtpy-rant (Pronounced cutie pie rant)3
Guys , I have been asked to fucking merge two bootstrap themes together. Why does my lead think that's a good idea ? I mean they are complete themes for a reason and both have their own custom css. I have been busting my ass for the last two days to make it work.I fucking hate css now.3
many new updates to skyRant, a devRant Android client! new stuff:
user and blocking of words (such as gpt :)
rEaL tiMe notifications :P
link preview (image, icon and desc)
german language support
double-tap to vote (rant page)
and even more (this was just the best:))
for watchRant the ability to set your avatar as watchFace has been added!

I was coding some simple themes for a management system I'm currently working on my job, then I remembered about @Alice and I thought to myself "Fuck it, why not?" and added a subtle pink theme3
Building on https://devrant.com/rants/1654019/...
It's coming along nicely, I've been working on different themes and I'm still making the tree more natural.
Next is to make the number of branches each time more random, and then I'll maybe add leaves. I might even add a day/night cycle, but we'll see once the code is further along and the automatic background updater is made.4
I'm really curious about how many people use the light and black theme in devRant (I'll call the default dark one dark, the pro one black)
I'm a dark theme user (it's kinda unique to devRant)
My guess is 5% Light, 85% Dark, 10% Black Theme.15
The overuse of something is designed to demoralize and discourage the very thing.
Vapid christmas jingles, meaningless consumerism, blackfriday shopping, keeping up with the joneses, decorations and tinsel bullshit so overloaded on homes and trees that it looks like a gaudy airstrip display, holiday-town-esque themes and festivals so frequent, overcooked and overcommercialized that its like you've stepped into a 40-year-old sterile suburban house-wives braindrain internal fantasy reruns of regurgitated hallmark christmas romance movies.
Alls fair love and christmas.
In other news, some strapping young and intrepid adventurer *lit a public christmas tree on fire*.
Its a shame really, when we can't just enjoy the simple things without some dickhead going and spoiling it. But also I can't help but ask
"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!"13
long time listener, first time caller. I love designers. seriously. I love getting a nice juicy Figma file and not knowing how the heck I'm going to do half the wild stuff in it, but it's beautiful, so I'll figure it out. Go ahead, send it to the client. But designers who learn how to use something like Elementor or one of those crappy kitchen-sink themes, call themselves developers, and win work with clients I share with them. I'm the one fixing everything when that crap breaks. I would never in a million years present myself as a designer, even though I know I know a damn sight more about design than they do about dev. I get it, everyone needs to make a buck, but every time this happens it makes me sick to my stomach. We're on the same team. I always, ALWAYS, go to the mat for good design. Why don't more designers have an equal amount of respect for us? Design phase always goes over deadlines and we always have to pick up the slack to make the hard launch date. Well, now I'm just rambling.2
Fucking fuck shit monkeycocksucking gargling wtf!
I was getting some stuff done in my accounting software and it bugged me that the fields were dark and the fonts as well, thus seeing fucking shit. This was clearly a bad choice of a gtk3 dark theme, thus i switched to the fucking default adwaita, suddenly gnome session crashes.
Ok, i just log out and log back in.
Logout.... Nothing happens.... Ctrl-alt-backspace , nothing happens (and i knew i enabled that in the settings)
Ok let's do it a bit more forceful and restart the display manager... Gdm starts... I insert my credentials... It fucking crashes.
I desperately try to debug it, xsession error msg'es? Nope. Something in /var/log/messages? Nope. Something, anything at all, nope sherlock nopedinope!
About to go batshit crazy, purging and reinstalling all of gnome, thibking that, what ever setting lust have broke it, it will be fixed now.
No fucking fuck desktop!!!
I lost my nerve and replaced gdm with lightdm, and i finally, after three hours wasted on my machine, i get my gnome desktop back... But in a state of mess! Extensions don't work and make it crash again, user themes? Nope, go fuck yourself with plain default.
I'm really losing my shit, business is almost non-existant, and now ly FUCKING desktop refuses to work like i want to. Everything is fucking broken to shits !!
I'm gon a go to my gf, and relax a little, at least i still have a working laptop.
Question is, for how long???
I just got a job as a "Web designer", but I've quickly learned that my job duties involve installing theme forest themes for clients and sticking to the template. I'm not allowed to write my own code. ever. uuuuuuuuggggghhhhhh5
I spend far more time on making my workspace look elegant (organising files, editor themes, plugins, syntax color, look and feel, custom changes in .<file>rc files, etc), than in actual learning and creating.1
It was on this day, we give thanks to our lord and saviour Apple, for enabling dark themes for all!!!5
How can people work with those surface of sun level bright white IDE themes? Like, do you wear your sunglasses at home too?2
So for the past few days I decided to create my own personal blog because I wanted to start blogging again. Anyways, I setup a basic WP website (sorry wp haters xD) and installed a pretty cool free theme that I tweaked all over the place.
I was thinking of cool things to add while I'm just in that setting up phase and I really admired that whole dark/light mode toggling feature :) so I spent the past day or so creating my own and it works finally, even across different pages! So i thought I'd share. (Please excuse the BS posts, its strictly for testing. Havent actually started writing posts yet xD)
Heres also a link to this terrible js file I wrote that controls the logic lol (I'll have to refactor quite a bit but it works)
Any feedback is appreciated as I'm still just developing it :)14
Can we collectively as an industry just calm down a little and stop lying to ourselves in a misguided attempt to inflate our sense of purpose...
I just stumbled upon a job listing for a WordPress developer position that described it as "helping solve the big problems of the day". Seriously?! Let's stop and get real you're probably just building themes. Maybe a plugin or two. So just relax and accept you're just another web developer building yet another 💩site you're not solving "the big problems"...
... Then again it IS WordPress...4
just a note to everyone selling web based software, like plugins or themes: check github. someone who bought your stuff might have put it in a public repository, enabling everyone to get your product for free.1
I actually only started programming a little less than two years ago. I entered my freshman year of college as a mathematics major, but as time went on I ended up enjoying coding in C++ much more than trying to work out partial equations.
I have since become fascinated with many aspects of computer science, mainly web development and systems programming (I discovered Linux and the command line only a year ago and I'm practically in love). I've since been working for a couple fairly new startups with duties from developing a mobile native app in AngularJS/Ionic to migrating content to new servers and developing custom themes on WordPress. I have deep, deep aspirations of eventually being employed by Google as a Senior Software Dev (although I'd definitely prefer working for a company that would allow 100% remote work 😁). I've even finally began developing my own projects, ranging from a URL shortening service to a basic online encyclopedia.
I wanna spend the rest of my life doing this shit. Hell, I hope I die at my computer.1
Confession of the day:
- I uninstalled all dark themes from Visual Studio, I just love the light theme!5
Why do product managers think their roadmaps/decisions are completely unrelated to our technical decisions? Information/transparency are key themes in the architecture process. In order to accept the risks, you must first understand them.
I love the speed and lack of bugs in Sublime, especially when dealing with large files but its so shit in the themes department imo.7
After having my soul suck away by "corporate", I installed VS code on my Windows 10 gaming machine.
Now, I have a pretty hardcore dev setup on my MacOS (it's unix-based and it's good, so stop the hate). I'm talking about fully automatized Rakefile that will provision it from scratch: vim, macvim, tmux, iterm configs, 15+ brew tools, 15+ brew-cask tools, themes, plugins, etc.
Installing VS Code, Node and MongoDB on Windows, just for the fun and giggles, and not having any of my hardcore tools, made me feel like... it's something silly and fun again. I'm once again that softcore developer with no stress and no constant self-reminder to improve workflow effectiveness.
Made me a little happy.
Checkout this picture, this is my Windows 10's "tmux" lol3
I just spent a whole day learning wordpress cause it's mandatory for my graduation project and I'm still not quite sure what I'm doing.
Always thought programming on a MAC would increase productivity. Got one, now all I do is changed iTerm themes.4
Can anyone explain what is the story of Rick and Morty?
I mean the themes, storylines, etc.
And is it an adult animation?
Can teens watch it? (is there any 18+ materials, adult jokes...)14
I'm kind of triggered by all these social media posters and SEO optimizers and "wordpress developers", it's one of the oldest internet scam "jobs" in my eyes where anyone can do what they are doing, yet somehow they are getting paid absurd amounts of money for who knows what. I'm just triggered by how much these people get away with. And stupid ass "companies" that I see all over first google results whose pricing starts from 5k and they're resumes are stock unmodified fucking wordpress themes that cost 39-59 bucks. WHAT THE FUCK. I just want to make a huge wave about this, this is straigh up scaming people. I couldn't live with myself if I would charge this amounts of money for installing a fucking wordpress theme and uploading a few photos. Are you kidding me. And seo scammers? is writting a 200 word essay with fucking yoast seo optimisation worth a few hundred? IS IT?14
I couldn't easily find it again and I didn't screenshot it yesterday. But this is not made up.
Yesterday I found a Sponsored post on Facebook about a class for one of WordPress premium theme with visual builder. Well it's more like a workshop rather than a class.
The description said if you want to have stable income, want to work from home, want to experience a *real developer life*, etc etc.
REAL DEVELOPER LIFE. No kidding.
I do WordPress websites. Yes I use premium themes. Yes I do visual builder. Fuck but I don't call that work real dev work and I'm not proud of those projects as real dev works.
In the end, the hungrier guy gets the bread. I guess. I haven't thought of providing such courses at all.
PS : the mentioned theme is Divi from Elegantthemes.
Visual studio keeps switching between dark and light themes automatically every couple minutes and it's infuriating.1
Why do most web sites have so bright design? Aaarghgh, my eyes!
Anyone who dislike screeching default color themes? Black, red, blue, on full white?
Then I guess your editor and terminal are on low contrast light grey on dark grey, or something like that, right? Maybe even your window manager?
If your setup looks like this and the web is what hurts your eyes, try Dark Reader for Chrome or Firefox. I've tried several such plug-ins in the past, but this one is amazing.
FUCK MICROSOFT!!! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK!?!?!?!? WHY IS THIS EVEN A THING!?!?!?!?
WHYYYYYY HAVE WE GOT A FUCKING DARK THEME IF WHEN I ADD ANNOTATIONS IN SSIS IT'S HARDCODED COLOURS.
No...seriously...not only am i doing this bullshit waste of time redundant annotations for some bullshit client that thinks they know shit but when I use the dark theme like a normal person, if you go back to a normal theme, all annotations in white.
Just finished like 30 packages on this slow ass remote connection and now all these backward ass people that use light themes (like everyone but me) can't see anything written.
Fuck you Microsoft!!!!! Soooooo many fucks for you right now....don't even know how to express the fucks.4
We all love dark themes right?
Anymore uses ES explorer for Android?
Hey the dark team is back... Just install this bullshit app about car parts that I'll never use and you can change to the dark theme7
😂 PHPStorm's integrated terminal sucks! Doesn't play well with other oh-my-zsh themes so I just use the default theme.
Plus the ugly block cursor in the integrated terminal which cannot be edited. LOL! 😂6
Getting ready to start working a little something something on the side. Client (read as uncle-in-law) wants it in Wordpress because he
1) has heard of it
2) can buy themes. I told him I can make it look any way he wants and use something else, something that I'm actually familiar with. He wants Wordpress. At least it looks like writing my own plugins to do stuff will be really easy.5
Every sufficiently advanced ui kit is indistinguishable from a half-assed html5 browser.
I think styling languages were the mistake of all time. And that we should go back to artists implementing themes on top of 9slice technology.
We need a thread dedicated to just debating tabs vs spaces and light vs dark themes, every third post is about one of them!1
Update From My now HackProof SocialMedia StarSpace :)
I now introduced themes (for now just StarPurple)
Added Votes, Tags, Mentions, Links and many many more features.
Im gonna release the App to the Playstore this or next Month! For now i created my own "manager" where people can view my apps and update/install them.
can be downloaded from the manager http://stardash.de:4000/ or directly http://stardash.de/download/... if ur interested :)18
Just keep getting the dumbest tickets from a client as a Frontend dev.
I told them I am a backend and even my contract says backend but I made the mistake to help them with some themes.
So fucking ready to take other interviews where I don't have to deal with bullshit colors and fonts anymore.2
Just released another free open source project. I know the world doesn't need anymore tooltip plugins, but I had already done the work for my confirmation tooltip, so I just separated it out and added triggers and themes. https://github.com/HTMLGuyLLC/...16
Took a day off and came back to find my team and I were moved from frontend to backend (which I always wanted to be).
Manager says we get to learn Java, Mongodb and even Hadoop.
I am so so excited.
But the only little hold back is, there is limited support for Java in sublime text and I should instead use eclipse. I had dozens of shortcuts customised with all those beautiful themes in sublime, but eclipse takes the fun out of coding(no offense to eclipse lovers).5
There is a lot of talk regarding IDE themes but what about your console?
Green text black background bash on Centos
Green text black background DOS prompt9
The beta version of the new DEVRANT TOOLBOX is available now.
Its an unofficial web extension for Chrome and Firefox.
Chrome Web Store:
The certifaction process takes a long time, therefore I provided a direct download for the xpi file (for side loading).
Additional features: DUAL FRAME MODE (feeds left, rants right), themes (black, mono, darkgray, darkblue, comic, solarized), scrollbar plugin (perfect scrollbar, FF only), extended controls, fixed header, sorted userprofiles (by votes), autoreload (recent feed, 180 sec), highlighting new rants (recent feed), personal filter, image preview (mouseover), keyboard shortcuts, timestamps for rants, compact mode, colored notifs with clickable usernames, weekly rant.
I tested the extension with Windows Browsers only.
It would be great to get a feedback how it works with other systems!
Have fun with the toolbox.7
I used to not care whether I used light or dark themes, so I mostly used the light theme in IDEs. But, seeing as all of you like dark theme so much, I decided to only use dark theme.
Now my eyes burn when looking at white surfaces.7
Alright, so. If you had themes and things you would like to see in a cyberpunk novel what would they be? I already have corporate surveillance gone haywire, a neutered yet corrupt government, an active police state, and cyborgs. Protagonist is an on the grid citizen who is an off the grid hacker.3
Just updated my Android one device to Android 10. Ughh, the worst design in the history of Android. Weird status bar icons, ugly fonts and worst possible color combination choices for both dark and light themes.
Google should go back to its colorful lollypop material designs instead of making more and more robotic icons :/3
Some common themes I have observed:
1. Why is this API using XML? It should be JSON.
2. Why are they using old shit? It should be new shit.
3. Why are they mixing new shit with old shit?
4. Why is the technology being used not fitting my sense of perfection and order?
What happens when JSON is the old shit? What happens when a new format is adopted that solves some corner case issues with JSON? What if those corner cases were solved by using XML, or a mix of XML and JSON? What happens when all the new shit is the old shit?
We will still be using the new old shit and listening to fucking noobs complain about mixing, matching, and abusing everything ever written. Oh JSON, how quaint and limited. Why did anyone ever use that? Fucking senior devs...10
Why the fuck do coding blogs insist on using themes with a 600px content column, then use code samples that are 3x wider than that? The whole reason I have a widescreen monitor is to not _have_ to scroll, jackass!1
SwiftKey made all their keyboard themes free for good! Time for us to get and apply this theme on our devices :D10
> be me
> watching FRIENDS
> lurking internet
> get a message from the manager, "we need to deliver WordPress + woocommerce + cost calculator theme to the client".
> "but I'm, not a WordPress developer"
> "okay, I'll just find a theme for it on ThemeForest"
> *sends theme as per description*
> *reverts back with HTML5 template* "see if we can use this"
> to be honest, that template was not even close as per requirement.
> *sends another themes back and forth*
tl;dr : she finalized the theme I intially sent after half of the day
shall i just kill my self slowly with fire?
Music, but if it has words they need to be foreign. J-rock, deadmau5, gogo penguin, carrion... All are good.
Dark themes everywhere unless it's java, because it helps me compartmentalise my languages.
Second screen hooked up with the stuff I want to be viewable all the time, as it doesn't change when I switch workspaces. (bug or a feauture?)
Door shut to muffle sounds from the rest of the house, window slightly open so I don't suffocate.
Pomodoro timer on, but put phone into silent mode so no notifications disrupt my focus.
Drinks and bathroom breaks happen in the 5 minutes between pomodoro sprints. Food happens in the 15 minute breaks.
Extra RAM stick is in the mail so I lose less time waiting for android studio to exhale or whatever it's doing as it holds up the whole computer.
I might just do the java parts of my project in bluej if this ram stick doesn't alleviate my problems. I could go outside and drink mud through a metre long straw with a filter on the end sooner than android studio gets unstuck.
If anyone can add more sensible ideas I'd be happy :)1
This is amazing!
Got some case of heavy eye floaters which can be either a symptom of age or intoxication.
Mine is the latter and I tried to detox with Chlorella algae. Threw in 6 capsules at noon and now it looks like they are nearly gone.
I double checked with an about:blank page, because by looking at bright and even textures I see them all (hence a dark theme is absolutely necessary).2
"Mobile optimized" themes, templates, websites etc that are looking completely broken on an actual mobile device are fucking ironic, especially those "css framework" websites.
So a lot of people tell me Linux is way better than Windows. And I know it's all personal preference but I was thinking about switching to linux. What's everybodies opinion?16
Can anyone recommend a good free blogging site?
Was going to use wordpress but im not paying 130 AUD just to map it to a sub domain.
Blogger has very few options when it comes to themes and custom themes.
And tumblr... Is tumblr (I was using it but decided to rid myself of such filth)7
For those of you who want something comparable to the full Dark themes people have used on Linux for years here's a high contrast windows theme that doesn't look like garbage. I'm absolutely in love with it and will never go back. It's my favorite theme since the Windows classic theme. Also it's just a theme profile, so no worries about modding files or installing some malware infested theme manager.
!dev Just realized I think I have a over diversified stock portfolio...
Now half 30 different stocks... Some of them etfs....
So many possible themes... Health care, ev, tech, recovery, US vs China debt...
How do you decide?8
I uninstalled ES File explorer couple months ago when reports emerged of them misusing data. Was unable to find other explorer until I came across Solid Explorer.
Amazing app. Had to pay something around 0.5$ or so but it's totally worth it.
Feature packed with uncluttered UI. Many themes to choose from. Really awesome. Hats off to devs
Oh my god, when will Firefox shut up about its motherfucking colours!? Themes have been a feature since forever, none of this is new. Also, I DO NOT want my fucking userchrome to be colourful, and I DO NOT want to be constantly bugged about this. It's a fucking browser. I want iit have a reasonably high contrast and otherwise blend into the edge of the screen, because for a web browser, the UI is not important and should not stick out.
I respect if someone has different opinions about UI, but it pisses me off to no end that Mozilla doesn't respect mine.6
Why is every dev obsessed with dark themes? I feel like I NEED to like them as well to fit in. :/10
Me: *tinkering on a webpage that spits out random characters, motivations, themes, and genres for the purpose of short story creation*
Me: Okay, so we have a young girl, with the motivation of The Power of Friendship, the theme of Crime, with the story structure of Dan Harmon, and set in a Fantasy genre.
Coworker: Dan Harmon? Improvise. Wait... A young girl, on a Purge planet who befriends Morty... I mean a young boy from a different universe.
Me: *a minute later* Wait a second, that was an episode of Rick and Morty!!
Coworker: I did that on purpose because you said Dan Harmon.1
Asked our developers to build a site framework that can scale globally for all our brands.
Tell them to start with these 3 brands
They tell me they will use Drupal for the base, fair enough, i did pick them as they listed ex extensive drupal skills on their resume
Let them work on it, then time comes to deliver and I get handed 3 completely separate drupal sites that are just simply 3 individual commerce Kickstart sites with some really bad themes applied.
Asked what the fuck this is and get told that 'multi-site was too difficult and' is still a goal platform /framework because you can run multiple Drupal sites on one server.'
These people were hired and their resumes said things like' drupal multi-site developer'
Needless to say I get to hire the devs now.2
Wordpress: add content beneath the loop on category/archive pages. WHY IS THIS NOT JUST A PART OF ALL THEMES AT THIS POINT???
Does you code also look like a Christmas tree?
I installed a few plugins and themes in Visual Studio and now operators, fields and values all have different color coding. Not to forget rainbow brackets.6
If you make themes in twig for a saas platform, for the love of god, learn twig. Learn to use partials and macro's for fucks sake.
Instead of building a good and maintainable theme I'm spending my time doing these "quick wins" that are horrible to implement. The whole thing is build up like that Escher staircase painting.
Are there any apps for Windows that automatically inverts the screen's colours if more than 50% of pixels are white/bright colours or smth like that?
I'm sick of getting jumpscared by light themes.2
Yanno, when I pay $60 for a theme, I get what I get. That's fine. Invariably I end up having to mess with the css. That's fine too.
However, theme makers? Please don't mix hyphens and underscores in your selectors. Decide on a case style. Avoid div-itus.
And for the love of all a selector such as #Top_bar .logo #logo a.logo makes code a pain in the ass to test2
Why do apps dont keep the black theme as default!??
From any ide to Twitter to even devrant!
Black theme looks so cool.. Why not just set it as the default one! Most users switch to it eventually anyways.
I am sick of searching it in the settings everytime I install a new app.4
For : Web devs, especially corporate website developers. (home, about, services, contact pages with content update features, bla bla)
Question : Is there an open sourced PHP solution between Wordpress and Laravel?
- I do not want full framework like laravel for such simple website.
- Laravel is too much and heavy for standard corporate websites and not all clients can afford ssh-enabled servers.
- I do not want full CMS features like plugins, themes, etc from Wordpress.
- Wordpress themeing is not super difficult but also not as simple as Laravel's blades.
- I also don't wanna go static since the content update needs to be dynamic.
- I am willing to write own templates, CRUDs in minimal approach just for specific parts based on clients requirements.
- I want something that can easily host on shared hosting. (do not have to worry about composer and ssh)
Anyone have any good suggestions for Java IDEs/Editors? I'm using Eclipse right now, and since I'm a student I can get IntelliJ Ultimate free, except I can't figure out why the run/debug buttons are greyed out...
Also would be cool to suggest good dark themes for whichever program you guys mention. And which OS would be good to use? I'm thinking Ubuntu right now
Plz don't hate for these dumb questions, I'm only a first year xD8
I mostly can’t see properly on dark themes. Thank you light themes for existing. I use slightly dark themes for IDEs though (One Dark)4
I tried playing with github pages sites today.
It was, as expected, *almost* awful. Tried the toml config first, figured out after a while that shit doesn't map well between jekyll and toml config.
The themes suck but didn't want to fuck with css files. As it is on a public github repo, I can't just copy paste and clean it up.
... So much for free software to be a pain in the arse to deal with. 🙄
Still better than nothing and I guess that's the entire selling point. You suffer, but it's *for free*. 🖕8
I got a job opportunity in another country and went there for a 3 weeks trail working, I've worked on two different projects, one was with a CMS called Contao and the other one on WordPress, I'm fluent on WordPress, I've been developing themes for more than three years now.
With Contao I started the learning curve and for 2 weeks I learned a lot of stuff.
Before coming back for Visa stuff and taking care for few documentes needed they asked me if I could still do some freelance stuff from my home country. I said yes and got invited to the GIT repo.
It's been a week now that I'm trying to understand how stuff work and everything that the senior dev wrote is way advanced from everything that I've ever worked.
I couldn't finish more then 5 minor tasks simple CSS and PHP logic and I'm feeling very embarrassed.
I just wrote to the senior dev and told him that I'm way behind with my coding skills and I'm seeing dreams with code that don't work.3
Yes WP sites can be bad.
But as bad as it can be, just as easy it can serve as a good kickstarter for the next website.
If just the developer behind said website has some kind of dignity about the code they produce and respect for their fucking job!
1. Don't use bloated plugins.
2. Always vheck out alternatives.
3. Don't ever use paid plugins/themes... just don't.
I for one, whenever installing a plugin, if said plugin generates any kind of unexpected output such as a notice it's an immidiate uninstall, and then rolling my own.
I also use a bare minimum boilerplate theme which does not bundle any frameworks, additional libaries or other kinds of that bloatware for all my wp sites, this ensures that every site is somewhay unique.
I've seen so many "devs" being lazy as fuck, using the wrong themes/plugins to "code" the site.
No! using page builders such as visual composer or bloatware slideshows does not count as good tools.
If you buy a theme from themeforest thinking it will save you hours of custom development, then fuck you... go drown in acid.. because guess fucking what?
It will save you absolutely jack shit in the long run..
Anything stating otherwhise is marketing bullcrap4
Was wondering, what's so good about dark themes? I just use the default and tried but don't use things like Flux.
I don't feel I have any problems but.... wondering if I should switch?5
VS Code and SourceTree are two of the most used tool by me this year.
SourceTree helps me visualise the git commit history and branches more than git log can.
VS Code, on the other hand helps me with all the short code editing stuff and sometimes even helps when I don't want to open a full fledged IDE for the project. I have setup my own Icon themes for VS Code and even created watchers for files. Can't do this much on Webstorm so easily.
Has anyone else installed Ubuntu 18.04 and have their themes not working (I'm using arc thenes), and the top bar menu options like file, edit, etc not appearing? I can't find fixes.
AND WHY IS 18.04 SLOWER WITH GNOME?!
This better all be fixed by the final release. Also by slower, I mean animations, opening certain apps, like wth.6
Is there a program which is good for simply looking at code? It wouldn't be an editor per say, but a viewer. It should be tailored around code, have the usual highlighting, color themes is welcomed, maybe something that highlights comments, documentation and so on.
For development on Windows, this role have always been filled by Notepad++ for me because of its integration to the context menu. It does the job, but I'm wondering if there is actually something like this on the market.17
About 3 years ago, we had 4 different WordPress sites for various clients.
My colleagues thought it'd be a genius idea to keep them all in one repo. Even more genius, for local development, a single installation which implements a switcher for the wp-config.php files so we can switch between sites. Not bad in theory.
Fast-forward to present day. 1 client left; another site got converted to using Laravel because they always asked us to update their content so no point using a CMS; whereas the remaining 2 sites use differing versions of WordPress on their live sites, no less than 18 months out of date, have no dev sites, different collection of plugins and themes and both modified to the deepest darkest depths of fucking hell that's barely recognisable as WordPress anymore and next to no documentation or comments around the changes.
The functions.php file of one of these themes is over 4000 lines long!!!
We're keen to upgrade our servers to use Ubuntu 16.04 which defaults to PHP7, so all the already deprecated WordPress functions will then fail to work completely as will have been removed.
Both of these clients have agreed that they wish to convert Laravel as well so there's not really much point in going through the clean up process of their WordPress sites. Just copy the database nuke it all and start a fresh with Laravel FFS!
They also wish to completely redesign and discuss what features to keep/add/remove. With no date for these redesign meetings in sight, we won't be converting to Laravel any time soon, nor upgrading our servers in the foreseeable future either!
This is all because of one dev in the office and his history of failing to keep on top of breaking changes!
Fuck you! Seriously, fuck you!!!
If I was your superior, then you'd have been fired long ago!3
If you publish a package over Composer - or in fact any package manager that allows optional dependencies - please don't make dependencies that aren't **absolutely necessary** required.
Is it a theme for your nice app? Don't make it required, some are not going to want to use this theme and don't want to deploy extra Megabytes to their servers every single time.
In fact, someone may even want to replace that dependency with a fork, like a customized version of that theme because it is not flexible enough! Forcing that dependency means it can only be replaced with hacks.
I am looking at you, `oxid-esales/oxideshop-metapackage-ce`, with your extra themes and demoshop data that makes the Deployer tool push and copy around half a Gigabyte of unused assets on a website every single deployment!!2
Company is hiring a new PM (the first one, to allow me, the only dev, to concentrate on developing and not dealing with client crap) and I'm being allowed in on the vetting process.
Background: we maintain quite a few WordPress ecommerce sites, so part of the job spec was to be familiar with WordPress environments and the codebase, and that they have a least 3 years of PM experience.
1st phone interview: I'm an experienced WordPress developer, been doing it for 5 years.
Me: oh cool, can you show us examples of themes, plugins, and extensions you've created?
Guy: oh, no, I just install pre-made stuff.
I‘m currently trying to get an SFTP user for our school's webspace (preinstalled WordPress, don't hate it - it's "great" for non-"it" people) and our network administrator means that he can't create one for me because I would have access to all files on the server.
WTF, you can create SFTP users on Linux and restrict their access and even set a home directory.
Yeah, now we need to forget about themes and plugins in WordPress.
(He said that he also can't create an FTP user)1
Can we have a moment of silence for the jekyll themes that are supported on GitHub?
Jesus Christ I'm in the graveyard here5
Me in Backend dev contract. Everything worked great because I translated simple themes and worked with modules.
Did some work as full stack to same agency as a favor. Mostly frontend work but ok.
Now being judged as a frontend despite my multiple protests of not being a frontend developer. Nor do I have any interest in improving my skills as one.
It's now affecting my mental health and physical health. Thinking about not renewing that contract.
currently I'm kinda lost in web dev, particularly WordPress themes. As I'm knew to this stuff, I feel I'm going to the wrong direction.
I don't know how to properly make a website, until know I've been doing it all by hand, but as I stated theming, I started using sass, auto prefixes, minify (js|css) and I'm wrapping all this with GNU make.
I'm certain this seems wrong, but what should I do??5
So actually on the note of my last rant. What music does everyone code to? I code to EDM, JPop, Vocaloid, old video game battle themes and Heavy Metal.
One Punch Man opening is a favorite when deadlines draw near.9
Dark-theme only is great and all.
But we just launched Synthwave and Cyberpunk themes (with 0 effort).3
Is it possible to base a custom GTK+ theme on Adwaita without having to compile a custom GTK+?
I planned on following https://worldofgnome.org/creating-g... to solve a scrollbar styling issue for myself.
But that guide seems to be horribly outdated as Adwaita seems to be fully compiled in as an engine now - for performance reasons, wich they obviously would never expect to matter to people using custom themes (because else they would have optimized the application of all themes in general instead)...2
I honestly don't know how people use Apple products. I feel like Apple is so limited. I don't know maybe I am wrong because I have used nothing but Android my whole life....5
Ooooh. devRantron looks really fancy. Thanks for the AUR package :)
Really liking the themes "coming soon" - We must convert them all over to the dark side! Muhahahahah!
Erm I mean... *whistles*4
markdown4documentation is a tool that can either convert a single markdown file, a complete directory or a complex structure to HTML or PDF. You can choose between several build-in themes (called templates) or define a custom theme.1
Spent all day testing different desktop environments and themes/icons. Finally settled for Vanilla Ubuntu with the Budgie-Desktop environment, arc-theme dark and paper icons. What are you running?3
So people mentioned hexo here and I got really interested, since it seems really lightweight and has nice themes ready to download, but I don't get it, you have to re-generate via "hexo generate" the public html each time you want to publish something new?1
Why can't developers get dark themes right, or at least let me stylize it the way I want it? If you are only changing the background, black is *never* a good choice because it contrasts too much with the other default (and still bright) colors. Dark gray works much better.2
Ubuntu 20.4 is not very cool.
It might look "polished" in some (barely noticeable) areas , which doesn't matter to me as i already used better themes and icon packs. Moreover they tried make ui and icons flwt which looks terrible. It feels like to ubuntu's designers , flat= every icon in a dark gray color. Am not a fan of black topbar either, the old darkish looked much better
The worst thing is that now i have to go through multiple start screens since my laptop is dualboot :/ .
Its now like : black screen > (hp+ubuntu logo) + grub > (hp) > (hp+ubuntu logo + loading icon) > lockscreen > my system
Earlier it was just hp> grub>lockscreen>my system. The fast start up was one of my favourite features of Ubuntu, now its a million loading screens. The lockscreen is cool tho6
Trying to figure out Material Custom Themes. Goddamn who ever came up with this was either a genius or a donkey. I cannot get a grasp of it. I need a custom palette import this in a custom theme and then make sure this theme is included in my Angular installation.
Why god why?2
Another day, another weird trend that's come up on devRant. Today it's Light Theme vs Dark Theme. Take your pick and place your bets! 'cause after setting Windows to dark theme, I ain't leavin' it! What about you guys?2
Installing VS Code on Ubuntu. Anybody got some plugins/themes they can suggest? I usually use Brackets; Atom for React3
I have a question. After beating my head about choosing a CMS for the first time, I am still not sure which CMS to use.
The website is supposed to be a portfolio, but the photographer/designer (client) does not have any idea on how to use HTML, which means he cannot update his website regularly.
For me, this first of a kind project.
Using WordPress makes using custom themes a pain.
Using NetlifyCMS, I kind of have to depend on GitHub.
Another idea is to create something similar to Instagram.....where the client can only add pictures.....what are your thoughts guys?....10
Anyone knows a good way to enable dark mode for any website? I used to use the Stylish plugin for firefox to get dark themes on sites I am visiting frequently such as github, gitlab etc however most of these themes broke pretty often.
Are there other ways to dark theme websites, in a way that is more reliable and doesn't break on every second website visit? ._.4
Light theme in Notepad++ and dark theme everywhere else. I tried dark themes in npp but didn't find any of those as good as default light theme.2
Anyone got any favorite Atom themes/plugins?
Mine right now is HTML Live Preview, just to save myself from having to refresh every 10 seconds 🙃3
Hy to all,
I managed to install Archlinux after 3 days of continues documentation but I still have some problems that I need to solve.
1. Any idea how to run gnome-terminal?
I've set the locale if you guys are wondering and installed vt3.
2. Couldn't install visual studio code.
3. How do I install themes. I have gnome gui.
I've read the arch documentation but still can't figure out how to solve some of the problems. If you guys have a website with a good guide or any tips that would be great.
Thx in advance.1
As much as I prefer dark themes, I do prefer the Colorful theme for Office 365. Really helps all its apps stand out and gives them personality.
I'm beginning to design websites using WordPress. The issue is, every client wants their website to be styled differently. ive looked into creating my own themes, but a new theme for each client is just unrealistic.
Somebody pointed me towards dopewp.com, which is a Bootstrap based theme with a page builder. I've settled for the idea that I need one theme that'll do the job everywhere, but there's more questions past that.
should I develop my own Bootstrap theme, or use freemium software (which I hate) like dopewp? another option would be to build my own Bootstrap theme, or a completely new Bootstrap CMS.
I just don't know...6
I am new to Ubuntu or any Linux OS and have been hearing a few good things about them.
So few days ago I decided to try out the Ubuntu 17.10, after which I installed Gnome Tweak Tool to customize the look and feel. After installing some themes and applying them I found the whitish bar appear as you can see in the photo I attached. I do not like it (hated it also when I used Windows). Please how do I make this go away as I have googled alot about it but cant get anything helpful.
I also have the issue of my Windows button not performing any shortcut task as before like showing the desktop screen (this now happens when I click the Windows buttton + A key)
Thank you all9
I have an upcoming team meeting whereby we are going to ask the team on how they think we (as in the department) are doing? This can cover anything really from the way deliver code, interact or even just the wider context such as the office space we occupy.
I don’t want the session to be a free for all moan, so what techniques have other developers employed to elicit feedback?
In the past I’ve done a big piece of paper with sections:
What we do well
What we can improve
What we are poor at
We then asked people to write post it’s and attach them to the paper. These were gathered into broad themes and we then voted on as to which people felt most strongly about.
Just looking for suggestion of how I could make the session more successful. Thanks.1
Headache, bronchitis, feature creep. But for years I've used light themes. Now I'm using dark themes and it's easier on my eyes. Hmm. Used to hurt my eyes to use dark! Anyway it's about the worst day to try this out because. ..just switched to clients text messages and the "know you're not feeling well but ..." burnt into my retinas bc i didn't think ahead to change any non IDE or dev related to a dark theme.
Been doing some sprucing/ricing up of the ol' desktop and wm, what themes would you guys say work most smoothly with the Plano Dark WM theme? (got it here https://xfce-look.org/p/1174518/ ). Adwitta dark is doing an... ok job for now. i'd rather have something a little flatter to match with my titlebar though!2
I am thinking about quiting my job. The version of Eclipse my company is using has a bug for dark themes when highlighting a repeated word... it has the same color as the background...2
I really need to get used to dark themes on editors and probably browsers before my eyes just leave me for good. 😂😂😂
I'm still stuck with Windows 10 build 1703, if and only if the story comes without bugs then I'll update to the latest build.......
I'm still battling with the themes crashing settings........
windows 10 and a lot of fail testing ????
Tell me what error you've noticed in the latest windows 10 build????2
http://studiostyl.es/ is a excellent source for getting themes for Visual Studio.
But when you try to use it under C++, it looks like complete garbage and then you notice the theme was last updated 8 years ago and didn't supported C++ from the start.
You're damned to use the Dark or Light theme forever.1
Right, budget constraints, in out project. Shop site. Lets go with a good online shop system (shopwired) and just brand up a suitable theme. Client wants to see design flats prior to starting. OK brief designer. Pick one of the themes that is close to their current brand styling. Grab the theme pages, set your browser to 1280. Mock up over the top with brand colours/fonts etc in Indesign and png the pages over to me (make sure we have them on google fonts). Designer comes back a few days later with branded up theme page visuals. Cool, they look great, shouldn’t take too long to rework the css and get this thing working. Client approves mockups. Great, so open the theme files and realise the designer has fucking moved stuff around. This has turned into something more than a styling job. Fucking hell. there goes my budget and deadline. Why don’t you designers ever fucking listen!!!!!
I should’ve done it myself but needed to save time as I’m already busy. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!
Thinking of making some themes. Do people still do that these days? Is it a big market place?
Might start small with a jekyll github pages theme and see if I actually finish it.1
Inspired by @Raspik's post on MacOS, I too would like to admit something.... I don't like dark themes.
What are your favorite intellij themes apart from darcula and whatever that default bright thing is called?2
I swear there is just no documentation on GTK3 themes. I'm trying to change window decorations in an existing GTK theme and there's just no info out there. On top of that my posts for help have gotten a grand total of 0 replies.
If you happen to know where I can find some info about it I would really appreciate it.
I have a technical job interview via phone call later today and would like some advice on what to prepare for.
The role is Junior Web Developer and here is what's expected of me:
- Good knowledge of HTML and CSS
- Some experience with a PHP framework such as Laravel
- Some experience developing themes for content management systems such as WordPress
- Basic familiarity with Git or other VCS
Those are fairly low requirements and I meet or exceed them individually but just want to ensure I prepare properly.
What can I expect?3
Okay. Confession time:
I made a devRant account to "Join the Dark Side". Dark themes are so much better than light themes. They're easier on the eyes (at least for me), they have more aesthetic appeal, and I personally love the color combinations. So I just wanted the dang dark theme. What I got was an addiction to devRant. Well done you sly developers you just hooked another user.1
I was using prismjs to do some code block hightlighting stuff, and while it has some different themes it doesn't have my favorite one: the Darcula theme from JetBrains... So I made one :D https://github.com/LucaScorpion/...
I mainly use it with Gatsby but since it's just a css (or scss) file you can use it pretty much however you want. If you guys do use it let me know if you have any suggestions/improvements!
Started by jail breaking an ipod gen 2,which turned into getting homebrew to run on my Wii. Soon that turned into rooting my first android device and quickly snowballed into compiling themes for android and then building apps for Android. I was actually in school for xray tech but hit a wall in that waiting on a spot into the program. Decided I needed to proceed with my education and changed to a programming degree.2
WordPress and it's fucking buggy themes and dashboard, fml ,only God knows why on earth I decided to use this pile of shite wordpress.if I could I would have migrated to another CMs I would have done so long time ago.Wordpress, you are wasting my life away having to manage a website with your buggy shit.6
Kindly have a look into the project and drop your feedback on the same.

For someone who want to sell software products as a part time job what is better:-
sell scripts and code in codecanyon, Sell WordPress plugins or buy themes?or you have another suggestion?3
The Chrome plugin "Darkness" (I might have mentioned it before 😅)
Yes I know "Stylish" was a thing and it has been replaced, but by then I was way to invested in "Darkness" and it has some features that the others are missing; the styles are tested and maintained and it has themes to choose from.
And it has been a nice experience working with scss 😄
Just installed Visual Studio Code on my fresh machine and finally got the chance again to cherry pick extensions and themes :D
What Extensions and Themes have you installed and which do you frequently use?(doesn't matter for which programming language)2
A retraction/update to my previous rant: use Stylus over Stylish for dark website themes. It is a fork of Stylus before it was bought by an analytics company. Thanks to those who pointed it out.1
Hi, in my latest project I'm stuck on the CSS part.
I've already an Grunt + Sass Asset Generator for bootstrap.
The project has several (> 70) subpages aka modules.
The theming is client based, currently 4 clients with different colors.
At first I thought it was easy...
Splitting bootstrap to variables per client + bootstrap, so:
client1_bootstrap.scss (including client1_variables).
. . .
But now I'm stuck.
Reaason: The css classes are the same between the clients, eg client-bg-primary is the class.
I wanted to prevent generating for each client a folder - as every folder would contain the same content:
Each SCSS file would only differ in the variable import...
Is there a way to prevent a Global Module CSS file for each client (as there are @##* fucking classes duplicated and I really don't want to untangle that mess) but not ending up with writing the same Code over and over?
The IRC sass channel is moderated, not possible to ask there... And when I google I find mostly themes based on an class approach (border-light vs border-dark)… :(2
One has to wonder at your choices in themes of dystopia and mind blowing reality bending.
You'd think the standard reason of watching these forms of media to escape REALITY would influence your selections.2
People wonder why I use a page builder when creating a WordPress site?!
I do it to get FUCKING CUSTOMIZATION on your site. Some themes are so limited.....2
Todays website fail, looks like someone is using a NFS mount for the site:
"Deprecated: Non-static method PageLinesTemplate::current_admin_post_type() should not be called statically, assuming $this from incompatible context in /nfs/c03/h03/mnt/166492/domains/makerspace.com/html/wp-content/themes/pagelines/admin/class.options.metapanel.php on line 30"
There are so many options to pimp my linux system. Is there any point in time, where I will be finished customizing/prettifying my linux? I highly doubt.
BTW.. what is the best way to backup the whole config? (color schemes, themes, gnome extensions)2
something new. media has degraded to the point where the myopic nature of the people now making it have rehashed so many classics derived from the literate non-delusional sensation junkies o my age group and earlier to the point where barely anything comes out that doesn't have their weird themes attached making most of their films unenjoyable.
speaking of which suggest some new topic people. something new. say something new !1
Guys I need some input.
So me and my coworker discussed IDEs and I told him about this comment I read on StackOverflows blogpost about the developer survey of 2019.
Here's The link: https://stackoverflow.blog/2019/02/...
And the comment mentioned that he/she wanted more choices when it comes to IDE themes.
That got me thinking, what other than light/dark would be Nice to have. And why?
And why arent we given more than two to choose from?7
IntelliJ themes suck shit. I can't tell errors from warnings, comment errors from syntax errors, where the syntax errors are, ...
I've been trying to configure something sensible for hours now and no luck.
Go fuck yourself JetShitForBrains. I just need to code a simple method. Did I mention that JetBrains can go fuck themselves?6
Everyone have their favourite IDE, but to me Plunker😊 has been a great one it has hell of capabilities and don't forget about the themes it has.. *dark mode* 👌
Every damn time I wanna make sample code ..voila plunker it is ! Best for Mean stack development 👈
Am I the only one who loves it ??1
I was always a huge dark theme guy. Still am for most things, like here. But I’ve found myself starting to like the black on white with lighter themes. Am I nuts or does anybody else who has been doing this longer than me have input? Any schemes that we love or are the easiest on the eyes (referring to hurting my eyes after hours of working) ?1
I started using WordPress in the 1990's - building all kinds of sites that looked OK until all the plugins and new themes came along. As the years have gone by I've become bored with all the tedious little errors and bugs. To the point that I abandoned my print website 10 years ago.
Just tried to edit it today and FUCK NO get me out of here. It's like painting a Rembrandt with a fucking elastic band.6
Can someone explain me how installing a lightdm greeter (web-greeter) can completely break gtk+ themes and elementary-tweaks. How is that even related to each other and why does my fucking lock screen still look like crap? Seriously, I spent the whole day trying to fix my desktop environment and now it turns out that removing a lightdm config file fixes gtk themes on my desktop. How on earth is a fucking lightdm config file related to my desktop environment's ability to load gtk+ themes. It doesn't make sense. I should really stop messing around with things...6
Could we have other dark themes on here? I was thinking of something with different combinations of colours and contrast options. What do you think?2
Looking for a suggestion for a Visual Studio material theme, or any other good dark themes, because my eyes can no longer stand the default dark theme.
We uploaded a theme (The7) to a fresh new wordpress installation.
We imported a few pages and then BOOM! everything stopped working.
That fucking theme and its plugins just destroy the whole server...
I have a question about Android dark theme
I've added dark theme support for my application using 2 different themes declared in styles.xml.
On official android developer site:
"In order to support Dark theme, you must set your app's theme (usually found in res/values/styles.xml) to inherit from a DayNight theme"
and this is what I've done. I've also created colors-night.xml to avoid modifying colors that cannot be modified in styles.xml by coding and this works too: when dark mode is activated from device system, colors changes automatically.
At this point, I was wondering which is the best way to implements dark theme: creating 2 different themes, using colors-night (and drawable-night) or a combination of these 2 ways?
Can anyone please tell me an unique project idea on the theme of earth and education tech or what type of webapp I can create on these themes?7
I'm just a beginner with CSS, nodejs, sass and whatsoever. Also I really enjoy writing my docs with Markdown, so I decided to make an effort and create a project that aims to create an easy-to-use and easy-to-apply Markdown themes, that can be customized.
I know that this may be horrible code, but If someone can point me in a good direction, I'd be glad to learn and apply it.
I fucking hate shits around Wordpress. It's the most free-but-not-free software I ever used.
Someone knows a good website where i can found all free (not free but with paid version) themes?4
So anyone discover any good books written past 1990 which don't deal in hidden themes of your bs ? No elaborate color or number descriptions or dumbasses modifying jokes to two digit numbers that don't make sense ?
Hey everyone. I wouldn't do this normally but this is actually my first project that has gone live ehich was also the base of my study for becoming front-end dev. Its a front end lib that mixes bootstrap with styled components. But also explains a way to create react components with variables and theming helpers to quickly create components and themes that are sharable.
Any help testing and criticising would be of great help. We are trying to be reactive for bug correction and improvements.
