Back when I was still a novice, I took on a couple of small time projects from clients who contacted me after looking at my GitHub, and they all wanted to pay me a lump-sum for the project. Because I'm an idiot, I thought sure, what difference would that make. Boy was I wrong.
What followed was me finishing the projects well before time but because of the clients' constant reiterations and changes in design and nitpicking every decision I made while creating the websites for them, the projects dragged on for weeks longer than they were originally intended. And I fucking got paid that one-time amount in the beginning. All this maintenance, for free. Even though I had not explicitly agreed to the maintenance part, since they never finalized the specifications of the project, it just never got "done" officially, and all the maintenance part just came under development.
How many different kinds of disgusting does someone have to be to do this? I should've fucking said NO to those terms, but I had to have experience. Well, nice experience that was. Never again. :(1 -

ok, so first there were ads.
Then came adblock and the likes.
Then websites started implementing randomly generated strings.
Then came pi-hole.
Now some of the websites are using RNG + hosting ads on their domains...
(the order might not be very accurate, but you get my point)
So what now ?
I'm guessing that the next step for adblock will be to use AI to recognize these RNG strings, and then the websites will use AI to generate better strings (harder to distinguish if it is relevant content or an ad).
In other words - AI vs AI :D

Today I was enjoying a coffee and browsing the Internet on my phone for information on making mulled wine (planning on brewing some and wasn't sure whether to add ingredients during the fermentation stage or after) and came across this incredible example of what is wrong with websites these days.

So I'm pretty accustomed to German "professional" websites. As a tourist, I was just looking up tourist stuff online and I stumbled across this gem

So continuing my tourist search, I found several sightseeing objectives on decent websites, took the info from there, planned my trip and when I reached the place I was told completely different info that didn't exist on their website, which mostly messed up my visit to those touristic sites

So long story short, the place was working at hired me when what they actually needed was another business analyst, so I sit around with no work to do way too often.
I start looking for another job because I can sense that my contract won't be renewed.

Why are all the job websites so useless?
I get emails saying stuff like "Your profile matched for senior full stack developer at XYZ Ltd"
I have 18 months of experience, I have put this information accurately on my profiles on these job sites,. Yet they still recommend that stuff.
It gets better though... Every once in a while, there's one that I might have a shot at, not to mention these ads all look the same.
So get an email, I look at the job ad, which looks exactly the same as tonnes of others, hit the apply button, get message "You have already applied for this job" Yea? Then why tf is it being emailed to me? -
I hate those fucking websites that reject Mailinator email addresses (including alternative domains).
The other day I was so pissed off that I went on Freenom.com, registered a bunch of free domain names, and pointed their MX record to mail.mailinator.com.
Now those fucking dumb websites don't block me anymore.4 -

So I make websites on the side for small time clients for some additional income. And without fail every time I sit down to work on this one site something goes wrong. First there were problems with the hosting, and now the template that the client chose is no longer for sale. I hope I'm not going to lose them over this :( I've sent them a list of alternative templates and contacted the company behind the original template to ask what is up. Real shame because they picked what I considered the favourite too and now I regret waiting to fork over the money to make the purchase.5

I remember back when I was in pre calculus I decided to take a class online. So my teacher's website was made by him and run on go Daddy, he taught precalculus, calculus, algebra, algebra ii, and computer science. I decided to penetration test his website and use a web crawler. His directory that had the tests, test answers, exams, exam answers, and homework answer's as well as all the books he's written in PDFs, was unprotected, I could access and download them all. He also had a database directory that contained all the students' phone numbers, email addresses, home addresses, and their full names.
I alerted him to this and didn't get anything in turn :P2 -

This isn't too big, but it was big for me.
I was on a school trip to place X, it was a math competition. I was in grade 8.
The kid whose family hosted me and my friend for the competition was in 10th grade. One night, we were playing on the PS4 when he went off to work. Turns out he had to make a website for a technology assignment. I looked at it, and told him, "What's this? Looks easy. Really easy." I'd done a similar thing in grade 6. When I told him he asked me to show him the website. I downloaded it off Google drive(where I keep it) and showed it to him.
It took me a couple of minutes to convince him that I'd made in grade 6. Made me so happy :) -

Anyone knows a good way to enable dark mode for any website? I used to use the Stylish plugin for firefox to get dark themes on sites I am visiting frequently such as github, gitlab etc however most of these themes broke pretty often.
Are there other ways to dark theme websites, in a way that is more reliable and doesn't break on every second website visit? ._.4 -
Why do software companies make a huge point on their websites what kind of technologies they use, in addition to drop-naming the various development methodologies they practice? I was under the impression that clients, other than programmers (and perhaps people who manage programmers), won't have the faintest idea about what these words mean and how they relate to the product that needs to be built or the problem that needs solving?
As a second observation, most software company websites seem focused on the client - case studies, services, portfolio, work with us etc. Often however, their blogs are all about development and programming and not targeted at the client. Why? Just to get page views and improve their search ranking?3 -

Oh my gosh, no one really knows here what is programming. Even teachers, which claim to be professionals in the subject doesn't know shit except for the basic theory. Nothing in practice.
It was evidenced by the largest job skill competition of Finland (Taitaja) that's for my-aged students (18). And yeah it's not higher education studies, just second degree, but that's where you should get the necessary practical skills for your work life.
The category I participated was website development, which is the only software development category.
It was a public event that is focused on showcasing different jobs. Well, what do programmers do, a viewer may ask. Even the responsible teachers and juries couldn't really answer properly. They just showed the specs we were following to create the crappiest of websites the short period of development time.
So we consume coffee and produce HTML, is that accurate representation of the whole industry?
All the other winners of different categories get a lot of job offers from companies when they win. I won gold last year (bronze this year) and I didn't get a single offer. Who would be interested in human HTML generator who can only make static websites anyway?
Programming is about problem-solving, not about graphic design and writing content.

I need to create a very simple, 2 page website with a simple form on the first page which is processed and a results page shown. It will run on a shared hosting platform.
I've created a few of these over the years for the same client and will have more to do. They started as .NET WebForms (yes, that long ago!) and morphed into more client-side driven but not particularly flexible.
So, is there a front-end framework which will simplify my life and continue to generate accessible, cross-platform output, or would such a choice be overkill and I should keep spitting out reasonable HTML?2 -
I hate AudioContext. Visitors might like it since it does not permit websites to blast loud sounds. However, as a developer, I hate it. Before AudioContext existed everything was cool. Suddenly it appeared from nowhere. I had no clue that Chrome added it. Now my websites aren't as exciting at first glance anymore.
