My life hurts when I have to develop on someone else's computer and they use the "light-theme". #teamdarkside26

She: Uuggrrr.. You did it again
Me: What
She: Stop opening the dev tools
Me: Oh sorry
She: Leave me alone with your laptop.
10 min later
Me: What did you change?
She: I tried to remove the dev tools by changing the dragged position to a negative value in chromes config files.
Me: wow.
She: Didn't work.
Me: Hehe, nice try though
*opens chrome*
Me: wut.
She: *chuckles*

Friend: I believe there's some kind of energy that rules our destiny.
Me: Haha, seriously, no
Friend: (Starts telling me about some proposal of how he's going to build something).
Me: Yeah that's not going to work.
Friend: (Gets angry and proceeds to explain his idea on a whiteboard)
Me: Ahhhh yeah, sure it looks great
Friend: Dammit!!

I don't discriminate fellow devs. i don't care if you write Java or PhP, I don't care what OS you use to code, I don't care if all your software are free or not, I don't care what framework you use, I don't care about all this. The important part is being a dev. But, those bastards using light theme can go fuck themselves. 🤣10

Currently on an internship, PHP mostly, little bit of Python and the usual web stuff, and I just had the BEST FUCKING DAY EVER.
Wake up and find out I'm out of coffee, oh boy here we go.
Bus leaves 10 minutes late, great gonna miss my train.
Trains just don't wanna ride today, back in a bus I go, what's normally a 10 minute train travel is now a 90 minute bus ride.
Arrive at internship, coffee machine is broke, non problem, I'll just lose it slowly.
NOW HERE COMES THE FUCKING GOOD PART!!
Alright, so I'm working on a CMS that can be used just about on any device you want, mobile or desktop, it's huge, billion's of rows of scientific data. Very specific requirements and low error margins. Now, yesterday I was really enjoying myself here until today, Project manager walks in, comes to my desk and hands me a Samsung Gear S3, an Apple watch and some cheap knockoff. He tells me that before the Friday deploy, THE ENTIRE CMS SHOULD WORK ON THOSE WATCHES!
I mean, don't get me wrong, I like a challenge but it's just not right, I mean, I'm still not sure what the right way to handle tables on phones is, but smart watches, just no. Besides that, I've never worked with any Apple devices, let alone WatchOs, nor have I worked with Android Wear.
Also, Project Manager is a total dickhead, he's the kinda guy that prefers a light theme, doesn't clean up his code, writes 0 documentation for an API, 1 space = tab, pure horror.
So after almost flipping my desk, I just called my school coach to announce I'm leaving this internship. After a brief explanation he decides to come over, and guess what, according to the Project Manager I wasn't supposed to do that, I was supposed to test if it would be possible.
FUCKING ASSFUCKFACE9 -
There is this guy at work we call 'the human linter'
Despite his mad clean codes skills: light theme
Dafuq dude :(13 -
Last Friday some company invited my project group (I am studying IT) to visit their offices.
After a little speech, they shew us the open spaces (dont feed the developers ;) ). After a few minutes, someone told me :
- "It's a fake, they are not true devs"
-"Why ?"
-" Seriously, who uses light theme to code?"7 -
I had genuinely forgotten devRant had a light theme until I saw a rant about it. I went into settings and turned it on for about four seconds, screamed "MY EYES" and rejoined the dark side.4
-
If you use a light theme for your IDE then...
I don’t, like, hate you.
But it don’t understand you.7 -
So this happened to me today.
After spending the whole night coding / watching Netflix I was sitting in my chair and looking at my screen with VSCode (dark theme of course) open. It was pretty dark in my room because the only source of light was my computer screen, which was still pretty dark because of the dark theme.
So, while looking at my code I suddenly noticed that the room had gotten a bit brighter. I wondered wtf was going on.
I looked out the window and saw that the sun was rising. Then I looked at the clock:
5:30 am.
Me: 'oh, lol'14 -
How do you salvage a really hard question on a whiteboard interview?
Ans: "I'm sorry, I don't code on light theme"!
Via reddit user csquestions5583292 -
So my girlfriend was complaining about the lights late night. As a regular dev I code until about 2am in the morning.
So here I present the ultimate dark theme. Darkroom red. No additional light source required, just your monitor(s).16 -
Please don't kill me!!
I started using dark theme in all IDE I use just today.. all those years I was using Light theme !9 -
(I wrote most of this as a comment in reply about Microsoft buying GitHub on another rant but decided to move it here because it is rant worthy. Also, no, I'm not a Microsoft employee nor do I have any Microsoft stock).
Microsoft buying GitHub makes sense. They contribute more to the open source community on GitHub than any other company. (Side note, they also contribute/have contributed to the Linux Kernel).
Steve Ballmer isn't running the show anymore. Because of that, we have awesome things like:
* Visual Studio Code - Completely free and powerful light weight IDE for coding in just about any script or language. This IDE is also open source, hosted on GitHub. It can be installed on Win/Mac/Linux.
* Visual Studio Community Edition: fully featured flagship IDE free for solo developers and students, can be installed on Win/Mac.
* Fully featured Sql Server running in a Docker container.
* .Net Core, which can be compiled to native binaries of Windows, MacOS AND Linux. You can't even do that with Java, you have to first have the JVM installed in order to run any kind of Java code on any of those operating systems. .Net Core is also an absolutely beautiful framework with so many features at your disposal.
...and more.
Yes, they've done bonehead things in the past but who/which company hasn't. Yes, they have Cortana. Yes, they force Bing on you when searching with Cortana (does anyone actually regularly use Cortana? Or Bing?). Yes, their operating system costs money. Yes, their malware-style Upgrade-to-Windows-10 tactics were evil and they admitted such. Yes, they brought ads and other unfortunate things to Skype. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about that Skype bit translating over into GitHub. BUT, the fact that so many of their employees use GitHub daily means they are dogfooding the platform, which is a positive thing.
Despite the flaws, from the perspective of a software engineer they really should be given a lot of credit for all these new directions they are moving in now. They directly aim to help and contribute to the developer community. Plus, Windows 10 is finally getting a dark theme! haha.
I think Microsoft buying GitHub makes a lot of sense. Of course do what you want about it, feel how you want about it, but casting the same ol' shade at them for anything they do seems a bit like automatic reflex more than anything else.
I'm bracing myself for the impending wave of angry hornets from the nest I just kicked. In all seriousness though, I welcome discussion on the topic even if you feel differently than I do. I'm not saying there's no reason to dislike them, just saying there are lots of new reasons to hate them less and/or appreciate what they are doing now.19 -
Dark Theme / Light Theme,
Java / C++,
Young / Old,
Proprietary / Open Source...
We're all devs and whatever holiday or time in the year it is for you right now in your country have a great time.
I love you all :)9 -
When you have to watch a online 30min tutorial on youtube and the guy uses the light theme on everything! *_*4
-
I really love to share my knowledge and I have a opportunity to teach kids coding as a lector. I even switched my f-ing theme to light for them so they can see the board (they're already saying light theme sucks, I love them). Maybe it's only html/css but they're learning so fast even though they're just bunch of 12-13yo Minecraft kids 😂 I'm myself only 17 but I can see the "age gap" between us, I'm getting old...11
-
Have guys ever thought that all te devs are vampires...
reason 1: Loves Darkness (dark theme)
reason 2: Most active during the night
reason 3: If the dev finds a capable victim then they can make them fellow dev.25 -
Wear a pink glitter dress, choose the light theme of the IDE and be still taken seriously as a dev - then you truly mastered your art!7
-
I started with Notepad++ (and continued like that for a while)
Then I tried jetbrains webstorm, I tried atom. I tried VS. They all have their cool stuff but I was never fully satisfied.
Now I tried brackets. I just opened a project I'm working on rn and started coding a little.
Half a hour passed and I still didn't notice that I had a light theme.
Yes. This is it. I'll stay with this editor. It just feels right. I just need to figure out how to use tabs not spaces...
(picture says just my opinion)31 -
When people request you change your badass dark IDE theme to a white/light one during a presentation.5

I cleared data from app to restore notifications on my phone... forgot how much the white background hurts.
Was not expecting that4 -
This morning:
SLACK HAS A DARK THEME! ALL GLORY TO THE AMAZING SLACK TEAM! SLACK FOR PRESIDENT!
This afternoon:
OH GOD THIS THEME MAKES ME WANT TO SCOOP THE EYES OUT OF MY SOCKETS THE FONT LOOKS UGLIER THAN THE PILE OF SKINFAT I SCRAPED OFF MY MOUSE ITS AWFUL I NEED HUGS SEND HELP
Thanks, companies, for trying, I guess.
I love dark themes, but the ones provided are often even worse than the light themes.
They go overboard with extreme black/white contrasts, pick a super weird hue of puke-gray, or certain elements are unreadable.
So, please, instead of wasting the time of your designers on something that's clearly too difficult for them.... how about just making it easy to create community themes for your app?
Especially if it's an electron app, how hard is it to add a config option to import a CSS file, and provide one template as an example?7 -
People fighting about spaces vs tabs and I'm here fighting about coding in light theme or dark theme.11
-
Bought new phone. Installed all necessary apps. Installed devrant last.
Forgot devrant password. Decide to skip login, will do it later. Press Skip.
Eyes immediately experience fire burn with the intensity of demon sulfur smoke from light theme. Instant headache.
Find forgot password link with the quickness. Reset password, relieved. Login.
Eyes immediately experience fire burn with the intensity of demon sulfur smoke from light theme.
APPARENTLY MY THEME PREFERENCE IS STORED IN PHONE'S LOCAL STORAGE. THANK YOU FOR THE HEADACHE DEVRANT.4 -
Was about to follow a guy doing really interesting work on Twitter, then noticed he was using a light background terminal theme.
-
I’m surrounded by devs that use the light theme in IntelliJ. It triggers me more than any bad code 😂😂😂5
-
Why does Google not have a dark mode for their freaking home page? I have dark mode on everything on my computer then I go to look something up on Google and get blinded. If they can do it for YouTube why don't they get it together on their nearly blank, bright white search page. You're better than this Google. And while I'm on that topic same to you stackoverflow. When I'm copying someone else's code at least let me do it in dark mode.11

Went to see my brother today. Before I could say hi, I saw the following:
- Desktop, Windows playing video
- Thinkpad, Linux mint, Arduino IDE
- Arduino board with some sensors
- Coffee
- Complaining about light theme
I've only thought him a bit of C# and SQL. They grow up so fast :')
(Before today, I only knew he was gonna learn Python)3 -
That moment when you spent an entire day making an awesome webpage (dark themed) and your pm tells you to change almost everything in it because he wants a light-themed website.
Fuck Everyone
(BTW now half the website is dark-themed and other half light-themed because pm doesn't know what he wants)5 -
I have gotten so used to code with dark themes (I even made Devrant from standard light to dark theme) that everytime i see someone with a light themed text editor, my eyes cry a bit.6
-
Finally finished the basic stuff on my website!
Now i'm gonna take a break and play some video games.
And thanks to @Alice for the dark/light theme switch.

Follow up to my (ignorant) previous rant.
Context: Eclipse vs intelliJ
Situation: Was too comfortable with eclipse. knew shortcuts in the back of my palm. Loved the light theme. Argued with anyone who blindly believed IntelliJ is better than eclipse.
Action: Forced myself to try IntelliJ. Stepped out of my comfort zone. Got a one day code block. Changed to darcula. My eyes struggled to read. My fingers typed usual eclipse shortcuts to discover unknown windows.
Verdict: after two days of learning and not giving up. I have started loving IntelliJ and I know why.
Moral: change is good. Get out of your comfort zone ;)15 -
Are you a dark theme or light theme kind of person?
I've noticed most devs use dark theme. I think it's interesting. I use light theme though because characters dance around on a dark theme for me.20 -
I'm so conflicted! My brother just opened VS Code and tried evangelizing me on the benefits of using a light theme! Should I disown him? Secretly sabotage his development environment? This is very distressing. Suggestions? Lol14
-
The main reason I want to be an app developer is so that I can enable dark themes by default. That way people can see for themselves and the dark side can take over!3
-
Never forget to switch your IDE from light theme to dark theme when you're hacking and back when you code well-behaved code!7
-
Please forgive me father, for I have sinned. I turned on light theme on DevRant, for the dark one doesn’t work that well in the sun9

there's this club at my school, called STEM, and another called "science olympiad." both are pretty cringey, bad, or boring. science olympiad was just for the college credit. during the intro to the club, they said there was a coding section. "game on!" is what they dubbed it as, where basically you're timed to make a game in scratch. i'm fucking tired of it. why is scratch considered programming? don't get me wrong, i'll write an OS in PHP before i say code.org is better than scratch, but fuck it. its a fucking interpreted language that's interpreted by another interpreted language. i don't understand why this shit is still used. scratch isn't good. please codecademy or w3schools or just write in binary directly, but not scratch. my hand hurts from dragging and dropping, my eyes hurt from the light theme, my imaginary cat committed suicide after learning about scratch's mascot. fuck it. now onto stem club, fuck it too. not for being bad (well, kinda), but for not being more recognized. it should be above science olympiad, and other clubs because you actually have to think instead of just memorize. but alas, we still were offered the choice of scratch to program the robot. sigh. arduino much? i guess not. challenging much? nope. was i elected "leader"? with three of my friends out of the eight there, i could have been, but no. effort in this would be depressing.rant fuck off fucking clubs fuck you fucking fuck fuck code.org just fuck fuck clubs fuck scratch fucking ducks fucking hell fuck this shit

So, I finally gave in and installed the unofficial LineageOS ROM for the Google Pixel on my phone. I got tired of waiting for the official ROM. It was quite an adventure. I have to say the most time-consuming part of the whole process was getting my bootloader unlocked (because my Pixel came from Verizon.) I did have a little adventure after the installation though. I opened the devRant app for the first time and was instantly blinded by the default light theme.
TL;DR I now have LineageOS running on my Google Pixel, and I'm quite happy about it.2 -
When you've been programming in Visual Studio for 2 years at a company and they hire an intern to help you program.
I set him up with git and the version of Visual Studio we share.
First thing he does is change the theme from dark to light and therefore changing my machine to light since we share the account... Already disliked4 -
Accidentally reset my editor and got default light theme. Strangely feels good. After 5 years dark theme starting to get boring. Guys, whats happening to me? am I sick?8
-
I know my profile contains a lot of Light theme ide rants, but i can’t help but posting more of em 😜4

Why the hate for light theme?
The whole freaking Internet is using light themes. Switching between dark and bright is tiring for the eyes. Simple as that.11 -

I really hate when I have to go to a colleuges desk to help when they need some troubleshooting . It is not because I don't want to help. It is just because of their light themed IDE.3

Finally customized gnome to osx like theme, but ouch light theme hurts my eye! Any other suggestion?7

Got 1 star and 1 fork in git feels awesome. Or been a year since I joined git.
Todo conky widget for Linux I build received a star. U can add and delete to-do using terminal, so I feel its cool. https://devrant.com/rants/1402297/... has screenshot.
A bash script I wrote was forked. That was for logging into college wifi page. The routers used to disconnect very often and downloads u to be stalled on fluctuation in electricity. This login script would re-login on connecting back to college WiFi using polling mechanism
Currently working alone, hope soon i will put up some colab work.2 -
Just got the darkest mode on devRant and it’s fucking amazing.
The medium darkness looked so gross that I used the whitess mode until I felt like I was blinded by the light and got the darkest theme instead.
My eyes thank me, my bank account doesn’t.😂6 -
I had to migrate ~100+ svn repos to git that were "useful" according to the client but found out that there were a lot of projects (+6yrs old) with only one commit message "--no-commit-message" and i'm not even joking...
And then I had to explain to these "devs" how to use fucking git with eclipse (+they all use light theme...) cos' terminal or gui client is too complicated
And then I saw their "Java libs" with ~3k line of spaghetti
Do you even dev bro?2 -
Yeah.... I want to confess i like light themes better. Anyways the colour/theme of your editor does not make you a good programmer.11
-
Hey... Is this... A picture of Napolean crossing the alps while giving devRant a shameless plug?
Nah. Can't be. Everyone knows that he's a soulless PM. Figures that he's using light theme.2 -
Whelp. I started making a very simple website with a single-page design, which I intended to use for managing my own personal knowledge on a particular subject matter, with some basic categorization features and a simple rich text editor for entering data. Partly as an exercise in web development, and partly due to not being happy with existing options out there. All was going well...
...and then feature creep happened. Now I have implemented support for multiple users with different access levels; user profiles; encrypted login system (and encrypted cookies that contain no sensitive data lol) and session handling according to (perceived) best practices; secure password recovery; user-management interface for admins; public, private and group-based sections with multiple categories and posts in each category that can be sorted by sort order value or drag and drop; custom user-created groups where they can give other users access to their sections; notifications; context menus for everything; post & user flagging system, moderation queue and support system; post revisions with comparison between different revisions; support for mobile devices and touch/swipe gestures to open/close menus or navigate between posts; easily extendible css themes with two different dark themes and one ugly as heck light theme; lazy loading of images in posts that won't load until you actually open them; auto-saving of posts in case of browser crash or accidental navigation away from page; plus various other small stuff like syntax highlighting for code, internal post linking, favouriting of posts, free-text filter, no-javascript mode, invitation system, secure (yeah right) image uploading, post-locking...
On my TODO-list: Comment and/or upvote system, spoiler tag, GDPR compliance (if I ever launch it haha), data-limits, a simple user action log for admins/moderators, overall improved security measures, refactor various controllers, clean up the code...
It STILL uses a single-page design, and the amount of feature requests (and bugs) added to my Trello board increases exponentially with every passing week. No other living person has seen the website yet, and at the pace I'm going, humanity will have gone through at least one major extinction event before I consider it "done" enough to show anyone.
help4 -
Sometimes I ask myself why dark theme isn’t the default setting on apps. I mean, light theme WRECKS YOUR EYES!!! How can the common way of designing is to make light theme default or JUST NOT HAVE A DARK THEME!!!!! It’s so unnatural!!!! Anyway...rant dark theme dark theme is the best dark theme is life light theme for light weights baby dark mode8

What’s happening to devrant the other day I saw a post how ppl preferred git gui over cli, just now saw a post where light theme ppl united. Where is my elitist crew?
I use arch btw /s20 -
I have a confession to make.. I have sin.. after 8 years of coding in the dark I've joined the light..
How did this happen? Well whenever I would decide to change my dark theme to another dark theme in VSCode, normally I would arrive at the light themes in the list, and for some reason the reading felt more pleasing to my eyes, so I started researching as to whats the best theme for the eye, and why does the light theme feel "more right"?
So it turns out that there isn't any difference for the eye, but that maybe because of the white paper black letters the eye finds it easier to focus on the letters rather than visa versa.
And here I am coding in the light for a month now and it feels great I guess?
Keep in mind I was one of those that would see light theme users as mudbloods and muggles. But I can't deny that the light theme + blue filter makes my eyes more rested.8 -
When you’re use to dark theme and the lights in your car are too bright, you black electrical tape all the things...
I’m either more sensitive to light, or I’ve adapted to dark theme-ing all the things.20 -
So I agree with some arguments against using dark themes but only because they all seem to be about white text on black, but I would never use that as a dark theme... (who would?) Dark shades are where it's at! Take devRant itself as an example.
I had a hockey accident where the hockey stick hook caught me in the eye and among many other things, tore my iris to the point that the doctors couldn't stitch it (something about cutting being reparable but tearing not :/ )
Luckily with some exercises, it healed a lot in its own but still let's in about double the light it should. Since then, black on white for more than a few hours will, without fail, give me a migraine. But then so would white on black, too much light allowed in means that white on black give an almost blurry effect on the characters. Hence, colour shades for the win :D
Just my 2 cents ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
When you're using an app with a dark theme for hours in completely darkness and then switch to one with a light theme4
-
**Day 2 of glaring at the code.😩 The bits are collapsing in front of my eyes into bytes and the glaring dark theme of sublime engraves the code into my retinas. Is it day or is it night? I can no longer tell. Having scoured every corner of the internet and applying every fix I can find the bug persists... was I ever destined to program? For the doubt eclipses my hope of ever seeing the light. I peer over the edge of the world into the abyss and the abyss... **

!rant but wondering,
I'm doing Instrumented test for my android app, and wrote that code to check if the fragment loads data and click on first item and check if all is working as expected, am I doing it right?
Any help would be great :)
Warning: LIGHT theme ahead, room brightness is higher than my screen and I can't see shit in dark theme :\10 -
Explaining to coworkers that it's not Windows XP on my work computer but Windows 7 with classic theme and that it's the same Visual Studio Version than theirs but with a light theme.
I've quit there btw.1 -
Right, I get that you prefer light theme. Understood it the first time you told me, even though I've never asked you. But why the hell do you feel the urge to whine and whinge about it literally every fucking time you stroll behind me and see my beautiful dark-and-pastel-colored ide?1
-
Mood swings are:
When you get bored of black theme and change to light theme.
And later changing back to the good old dark theme6 -
Microsoft Teams lets you set a light gray text color that looks like faded text in the dark theme but is invisible in the light theme.
And it lets you set a dark color that looks faded on light and invisible on dark theme.
Thanks. Now I get to argue with my team about it.9 -
People complaining about me using white theme are like people being dicks about what I wear.
Just take care about your business9 -

Today I noticed that my colleague is using Light Theme and it's pissing me off. I don't know why but I am really obsessed with it since this morning. I don't feel like talking to her now.
Maybe she's trying to torture me. That's so cruel.5 -
I'm really curious about how many people use the light and black theme in devRant (I'll call the default dark one dark, the pro one black)
I'm a dark theme user (it's kinda unique to devRant)
My guess is 5% Light, 85% Dark, 10% Black Theme.15 -
I started getting into .net core.
I am researching VB.NET as well as C# even though I already know C#.
And I am using a light theme.6 -
This damt "light theme" is the most ugliest thing anyone ever developed...
and my best friend loves it!
Now he was my best friend2 -
So for the past few days I decided to create my own personal blog because I wanted to start blogging again. Anyways, I setup a basic WP website (sorry wp haters xD) and installed a pretty cool free theme that I tweaked all over the place.
I was thinking of cool things to add while I'm just in that setting up phase and I really admired that whole dark/light mode toggling feature :) so I spent the past day or so creating my own and it works finally, even across different pages! So i thought I'd share. (Please excuse the BS posts, its strictly for testing. Havent actually started writing posts yet xD)

Heres also a link to this terrible js file I wrote that controls the logic lol (I'll have to refactor quite a bit but it works)

Fucking finaly I'm back on devRant after my phone decided to die during the weekend. But why the fuck do I get a light theme again? @dfox, could you save the preferences in the profile? Or at least display the options on first start? :*2

Why do most programmers use dark theme instead of light theme?
Because light attracts bug.

No...seriously...not only am i doing this bullshit waste of time redundant annotations for some bullshit client that thinks they know shit but when I use the dark theme like a normal person, if you go back to a normal theme, all annotations in white.
Just finished like 30 packages on this slow ass remote connection and now all these backward ass people that use light themes (like everyone but me) can't see anything written.
Fuck you Microsoft!!!!! Soooooo many fucks for you right now....don't even know how to express the fucks.4 -
I have a confession to make, I use a light theme, and I like it.
There. I said it. You can all hate me now.
It helps me to focus tho, as I use a dark UI theme. It really brings out the code.12 -
"You can Download Sublime Merge, and try it for yourself - there's no time limit, no accounts, no metrics, and no tracking. The evaluation version is fully functional, but is restricted to the ***light theme only.***"
In your butt light theme haters ;)4 -
My eyes don't feel comfortable on some dark-schemed IDEs or text editors. But when it comes to Sublime & Atom, I like them dark.4

Me, 5 years ago:
Light theme sucks, everything must join the dark side!
Me, now older and obviously wiser:
Actually, light theme is nice, it forces you to work in daytime, with less frequent headache.5 -
Confession of the day:
- I uninstalled all dark themes from Visual Studio, I just love the light theme!5 -
something i love about pop os is that light mode just doesn’t work. it’s straight broken at least for me. i mean sure i have like 5 conflicting desktops installed but yeah, i like the idea that the light theme just straight up doesn’t work. it gives me comfort knowing that the developers who made it and the testers who tested it weren’t subjected to the cruelty of creating and testing a [functional] light theme.5
-
I hate it because it is not properly visible from back and also why in this world you would do that...😒😒7

This project is frontend hell.
We have a dark theme and a light theme. Light is the default but not for mobile. For mobile the dark theme is the default. And if we dont like something we just create a overwrite css. And if that one isnt working we just create yet another overwrite file. And !importants. They are important to make sure things are working.
The we use this framework, but not for mobile. No mobile is just custom jQuery.
Ow and of course separately from the mobile version we need a iOS app. An app which totally differs from the mobile version because we want users to use this now.3 -
Soooo....
I just found out that the devRant WebApp has a fucking dark theme...
After using the light theme for so god damn long...
Can I have my healthy eyes back?1 -
Dark theme rocks , developers who use light theme while coding should be imprisoned and tortured by making them watch a 100GB download failing at 1kb left again and again10
-
Fast quitz:
1. Desktops or Laptops?
2. Windows or Linux?
3. Coke or Pepsi?
4. Instant coffee or regular coffee?
5. Light theme or dark theme?
6. Tabs or spaces?
Let's the hell begin! 😈30 -
I always choose light theme in all my IDEs and unable to answer whenever some one asks why. Mind to share some of yours?9
-
Light theme < dark theme < automatically switching between them based on ambient light, like the twitter app does4
-
One thing I don't understand, when I want to sign into iTunes Connect website, I have auto fill filling credentials, Apple first shows only email field, click next, then it shows password field, click next then you are logged in.
Why is it like this? Username and password are both filled, but yet need to click login twice to access my account -_-4 -
I use mySQL workbench on a daily basis, but I've been having issues with the dark GTK theme not working well with Linux. Should I do a workaround to get workbench to use a light GTK theme, learn to use SQL from the CLI, or go with a third option?16
-
Light theme + inverted colors = devRant supporter dark theme. Also, when you browse through Android in this mode, you can get some design inspiration.5
-
I used to not care whether I used light or dark themes, so I mostly used the light theme in IDEs. But, seeing as all of you like dark theme so much, I decided to only use dark theme.
Now my eyes burn when looking at white surfaces.7 -
Dark theme or Light theme??
Some ranters here become fanatics about dark theme. and this subject turned out from a personal choice to a standard, and people start calling light theme "garbage", "crap" etc...
First of all, for the grand range of people the light theme is healthier and more clear, some researches were made on this topic and found that ark characters on a light background are superior to light characters on a dark background (when the refresh rate is fairly high). Also, with a bright display (white background) the iris closes a bit more, decreasing the effect of the "deformed" lens; with a dark display (black background) the iris opens to receive more light and the deformation of the lens creates a much fuzzier focus at the eye.
Like I said, it's a personal choice, so stop being lame and pretend that dark theme is the slogan of developers. Don't get it wrong, I use dark theme for some IDEs too, but I will never ever call people using white theme with some lame words..
And finally, grow up, it is not about the theme, it is about the quality of what you deliver3 -
Hey guys
Just finished my first tutorial ever!!!
"Cheap poly pocket/plastic sleeve hack for storing small electronics/stuff... "
I wanted to make tutorials for a long time, but due to a burnout, I've been unable to finish any project.
Yesterday I was trying to find a solution to place all my resistors in one place, and I found it... Then I tought.. I never saw this hack on the internet... It's simple, easily explaining, this could be my first Tutorial.
So here it goes:
https://rodrigojpf.000webhostapp.com/...
1st - It's an Alpha product, just finished with the grammar
2rd - Pictures may be changed later when I get my workbench and good light
3rd - No styles yet, so don't complain about the lack of CSS, but it's already readable.
When I get a few more made, enough to desert a page on itself I'll CSS everything (So I can create a common theme) and release it to the public... maybe I'll get a few bucks with a few Ads
This alpha release is only for DevRant use. I would appreciate comments, improvements, ideias and tips
Thanks to @forE , @oudalally , @ewpratten , @Stuxnet , @j4cobgarby , @BashouT , @Plastic pocket and other in: https://devrant.com/rants/1539595/...8 -
Me running DarkReader: Some Russian dude can probably sniff all my passwords.
Me also running DarkReader: But, light theme websites or really any light theme content is an abomination against the dark lord Satan.
Thoughts?3 -
Our office setup sucks.
Wherever I sit, there's always a (non-dimmable) window right in front of me, or right behind me.
If it's in front of me, I squint the entire day and my eyes hurt. If it's behind me, I look into the glare the entire day and then my eyes hurt.
I feel demoralized because of it.
I've even turned on light theme again to mitigate this. Blasphemy 😥2 -
It seems like everyone else in my team except me and the cto are using dark theme. I see dark theme is the meta since Sauron. Am i one of the last ones to be using light theme?4
-
Every time I use an application that has both light and dark mode, I always use dark, and when I decide "Hey, I want to try light again" I immediately regret ever clicking the option.4
-
Felt like doing smthng dangerous and switched back to the light theme... Scariest moment of my life!3
-
So I love my pixel 2 xl, best phone I've had (not saying that just because it's the newest btw)
But fuck me do I hate how it dictates what wallpaper needs a light and dark theme, plus when you have a dark theme on, why does the navbar stay white in applications but the notification pane change... I love google but come on -,-
And yes it's a minor thing but it's the small things that are the worst imo7 -
Why tf is DevRant not saving my theme settings. I select dark theme and it reset back to the light theme after every new login <.<13
-
!rant
Another day, another weird trend that's come up on devRant. Today it's Light Theme vs Dark Theme. Take your pick and place your bets! 'cause after setting Windows to dark theme, I ain't leavin' it! What about you guys?2 -
Headache, bronchitis, feature creep. But for years I've used light themes. Now I'm using dark themes and it's easier on my eyes. Hmm. Used to hurt my eyes to use dark! Anyway it's about the worst day to try this out because. ..just switched to clients text messages and the "know you're not feeling well but ..." burnt into my retinas bc i didn't think ahead to change any non IDE or dev related to a dark theme.
-
Light theme in Notepad++ and dark theme everywhere else. I tried dark themes in npp but didn't find any of those as good as default light theme.2
-
I don't get why people use light theme on their IDE/browser/etc.. I mean its painful to see.
I use dark mode on everything, even the Google main page with a custom CSS.
also I don't know why, as my experience, people with light theme tend to be smarter than we darksiders.
This rant will not end well.18 -
Baseball game
I love sports, the weather was fantastic and the crowd wasn't that loud. Kicked my feet back, cracked open a Yoohoo, turned on my light theme and went to work.
I'd do it again too. But that kinda weather isn't here yet. -
What theme do you use?
1. Light
2. Dark
How often do you get a headache?
1. Once a month
2. Once a week
3. Once a day
What other factors do you think is causing you headaches?12 -
Random rant: the real ugly thing about dark themed apps is that you can't for the life of you find the taskbar so that you may drag the fucking thing around. (not a light theme guy btw)2
-
http://studiostyl.es/ is a excellent source for getting themes for Visual Studio.
But when you try to use it under C++, it looks like complete garbage and then you notice the theme was last updated 8 years ago and didn't supported C++ from the start.
You're damned to use the Dark or Light theme forever.1 -
am I the only one switching between dark and light theme in my IDEs depending on my mood and the outside temperature?
today definitely light!4 -
Just checked IG and it's on dark theme.
It's not a bad thing but they should at least ask me about it.
Or did they just know that I'll preferred dark theme over light theme?3 -
Let's have a poll.
Which theme do you prefer in a code editor/IDE?
1. White/Light colors.
2.Black/Dark colors.4 -
Okay. Confession time:
I made a devRant account to "Join the Dark Side". Dark themes are so much better than light themes. They're easier on the eyes (at least for me), they have more aesthetic appeal, and I personally love the color combinations. So I just wanted the dang dark theme. What I got was an addiction to devRant. Well done you sly developers you just hooked another user.1 -
Too many “helpful” people, as well as counselors, said the wrong things to me early on. These people https://loveawake.com/free-online-d... really do not understand the harm they heap upon the injured. I am convinced that our second marriage counselor was a cheater himself. He talked A LOT about himself, bragged about his education (narcissist), mentioned his stepkids often, and drove something that screamed midlife crisis (same as my cheating husband).
<p><img src="https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2016/..." width="880"></p>
Yeah, pretty sure he was a cheater living in a second marriage. Only saw that counselor twice, but I got the feeling his main purpose was to defend the guilty (when he wasn’t talking about himself). Kept saying we needed to make sure our children did not look at the cheating husband in a bad light. Huh? Had he not listened to anything we said? I had already told him of how I suffered from the Gaslighting (even though I didn’t know that term at the time).
My husband had convinced me, our children, extended family, and his coworkers that I was insane. I had been spinning in a state of confusion for the last six months of the affair, knowing he had to be cheating, but being made to question my sanity. Our two adult sons came to me repeatedly during the affair to scold me for my behavior during our 24 year marriage. I would just cry and didn’t know what to say to them. He never gaslighted our younger daughter directly, but he did lure her away from me, with movie dates, trips to concerts and theme parks. If I pressed to go, he would tell me things like, you don’t enjoy those things, or we can’t afford a third ticket, but you can take her instead of me if you like. Of course, I always backed down. He knew I would. Wow, he makes well into six figures, and I bought that?! Maybe I WAS crazy. It was as though he was playing single dad while still living with and sleeping with his wife. My daughter and I had always been close before this. And he would conduct horrible screaming fights right in front of her. I would stand there confused, because it felt like the heat level did not match the situation.
I had known this man most of my life, and I did not recognize him. To this day, I am angry with myself for withdrawing and not taking action sooner. I know that my relationship with my children will never, ever be the same. This selfish man destroyed the innocents, destroyed what had been a close-knit family. So yeah, that is what our cheating-man counselor should have been talking about. In our situation, the betrayed spouse needed reputation repair, not the cheater. The kids needed to see that I did not cause their father to stray. And I needed serious mental health counseling. I am still furious at that counselor. Waste of money. He owes us a $200 refund!1 -
Why I only watch the web cartoon 2 now. It is so great!! light theme :D
I started laughing so bad.2 -
Apparently, I am using everything in light theme, from devRant to Atom.
I don't know why but code looks a lot better now.4 -
Am I the only one to get randomly disconnected from the Web version? Also, light theme pops up randomly. Looks like a cookie issue if you ask me, but that's just at random.1
-
holy crap! i really am used to light themed ide. for some reason i played around last time and left it dark. now i just used it for twenty minutes. then i found the color scheme kind of strange and wanted to switch back to good old light theme.
seems i have to get used to the new colour scheme. ouch. -
I was always a huge dark theme guy. Still am for most things, like here. But I’ve found myself starting to like the black on white with lighter themes. Am I nuts or does anybody else who has been doing this longer than me have input? Any schemes that we love or are the easiest on the eyes (referring to hurting my eyes after hours of working) ?1
-
>sitting in dark room
>working in some dark-theme apps
>opens new site
>site defaults to light-theme (if they even have a dark-theme?)
>eyes burn
>"It's fine, I didn't need those anyways"1 -
The fucking sun in my (home-)office burns my eyes and I see fucke nothing!
Not even with a light theme.5
