Tips for people new to programming

For 2 years I tried to make my boss pay me what I know I should be worth. Over the same time the team morale took a nosedive down into an avalanche.
Today I told him, that I am sick of being kept waiting and listening to excuses. I want the payment I know I deserve and I want it before the end of the year. I believe to have stayed perfectly calm and factual, even told him "I am sorry, I really tried it, but I cannot take this anymore".
He found a way to put a (literal) "fuck you" and a verbal middle finger into other people's mounts, so he "didn't say it himself" and shut down the meeting telling me to look for another job.
Actually I have not felt as satisfied in my job for a long time, as I have in that very moment.
Time for a new start.17 -
Boss: Every day is a new opportunity to start fresh
Me: Can we start over this project because I fucked it up and I don't want to clean it
Boss: No4 -

When you start a new project.
You create a new directory.
You start the IDE and create a new application project.
You type just 5 lines of code for testing it.
Then you compile and run.
Nothing happens...
You abort and retry.
Nothing happens...
Half a minute later a window pops up and Norton reports you that an executable has been removed because its suspicious and has a lack of reputation!!!11 -
FUCK WEB DEVELOPMENT.
Seriously, what the hell. Things evolve so goddamn fast and someone new to the field can’t even grab something to start with. Once you start understanding something it fuckin changes and something else takes it’s place.

When you start a new job the same week the project manager is out of town and you haven't been onboarded yet.3

If you start your Gradle build at 11:50 pm on New Years Eve, you'll be able to start resolving your compile time errors by the time the clock strikes midnight.

How do you usually learn a new language?
My way is to start a project, then figure it out as I go.
I find that books and tutorials are usually better reserved for learning concepts or frameworks.2 -
Thought to start a programming blog.
Registered domain and hosting.
Created some posts.
Didn't get new idea/content to post.

Decided to start a new project tonight. A `brew upgrade && brew update` here, a software --install --restart` there. An hour from now I'll be ready for bed and have yet to punch a line of code.

Me every time I create a new Meteor project:

I wish, I wish, I could finish off projects that I started even if that means I cannot touch new projects.
Fucking takes me ages to get motivation to start something, but then I start too many things and end up demotivated so I scrap all of them and the cycle continues.6 -

The happy moment you start a new project a Find that you can use your old code, then realizing you don't remember how it worked but use it anyway.1

When I start a new project in Python after not doing Python for a while:
print("Hello, World.");
When I start in C:
printf("Hello, World.")
After errors: *facepalm* *facepalm* *facepalm* "RRRRGH semicolon."
Heh at least this time I remembered that Python uses print(), not printf()...1 -
that feeling when you start looking at code after dinner, correct a bug or two, start implementing new features, tweak the code a little bit, you are really focus in your coding... then look out the window and realize the sun is about to come up. it's great 🤓

"Why don't you look for a new job?"
I have a monthly coffee meetup with an ex colleague, where we rant about each others frustrations at work. Since she used to be part of my team she knows everybody and can relate to my stories and updates. In short: she was the kick in the boot I needed to start looking, and after the summer break I'll start a new job making 45% more.2 -
Last year I planned to start a startup. I've started many good things but not the startup yet.

Linux tip: if you're setting up a new computer w/ a fresh install of Linux or you got some new device you'd like to make Linux friends with, don't start by searching for drivers. Start with upgrading your kernel to the newest Mainline version you can. It's very likely it will bring your devices' support with it.
Damn I didn't think I'll like my P1 gen4 THIS much. Even better with a flavour of LMint!10 -
Just received my new toy (pixel c).
Of fucking course it needs to download a huge update as soon as you start it8 -
That moment when you PM wants you to start working on new groundbreaking software, and its been 3 weeks and he still hasn't told you what he wants..2
-
1. Nothing lasts forever and you always need to be prepared for change.
That might be technology acquired by other company and dropped completely by all of people or new technology take over the market for a year and is gone after that and no one remember about it.
2. If you go opposite way then all of people around you that might be actually the best way.
That learned me to always look around for new stuff cause this small stuff that people make today can be big company next day just cause they got annoyed by things and start something new.
3. Trust nothing that you see.
Bugs are everywhere
4. Quality and speed doesn’t matter when you start doing something but consistency matters a lot.
When you start doing something you suck and you need to be ok with fact that you’re going to make lots of stupid mistakes and learn from them.
When you start new prototype you don’t need dozen tools to finish it, you don’t need performance or perfection, you need consistency to finish it.
Good luck -
I fckin love it when you start working on a new project in a new team and the 5000 lines of Angular code are acompanied by 0 documentation.
-
That I'm Not working on my personal projects after university or work and beeing to lazy to even start learning a new language.
-
Starting a new project:
1.Think of a new/exciting idea
2.Start imagining and planning in my head
3.Start working on my idea
4.Give up mid-way
5. Get depressed
6. Get back at it way behind schedule and still not complete it
7. Go back to step 1 except that's basically how I start something new and not just a project :)4 -
Maslow's hammer is my new favourite quote.

New guy hasn't written or commuted any code, yet he is the most annoying person doing code reviews with bullshit comments.

That feeling when you are about to add a new feature to a project and when you start reading the spaghetti mess the previous developer puked when he/she was monkeying around, your blood pressure goes up, you lose a bit more hope in humanity, you start thinking about buying a gun, and start theorizing how torture could potentially be a valid recourse in some cases.3

I promised myself that if I didn't start up a new relationship by September that I would plan to start a new lease in life and move in 2019. The online dating subscription I've used for a few years will cancel at the end of this month.
I used to doubt that fate was real, but times like this make me come close to believing in it. Maybe fate is just one large karmic refactoring.4 -
Hi webdev here, who would like to start developing 2d indie games. My main language is JavaScript. Is there any way I could start developing games without learning a whole new language?9

I made a serious mistake that is to start directly a programming language without mastering the algorithms, because finally, without a good knowledge of Algorithms we will never be innovative in this field, that's why I reinitialize myself and I take a step backwards to start the algorithms right and master them well.
Your advices please. -
Angular? React? Vue? Polymer? ..?
What do you like the most and why?

Pretty recent one. I found that I can use Perl to edit files using a single cmd line (with regex search and replace). Loved it.

You know what I hate? The periods close to a new release. It's that annoying time that managers start heaving impatiently to developers: "Push out new hotfixes! Push out new hotfixes!". Fuck you, man. Don't stress a developer. Kthx. If you think developing is so easy, come do it yourself, you IT-ignorant buffoon.1

The new job is sucking all of my motivation away. Been a while since I’ve did any coding just for fun. It’s tedious to even start learning new things after work.. how do you people deal with it?7

Start with simple projects then keep improving it until you reach the depth level that you want.
I used to learn a new language/technology every month, I did that all this year until now, I learned 3 new languages, 2 new databases, 1 new paradigm, so many frameworks and methodologies and design patterns applying in real world projects ! -
- Learn at least one new programming language
- Start a new personal project
- Push things into my GitHub
- Complete one certification
- Exercise
- Practice mindfulness
- Read atleast 1 book per quarter -
Grr! Why is my new iMac taking forever to start up programs and load websites? I feel like it should be faster than this!9

Advice to new DVCS users: Start with Git, not Mercurial. If you start with Mercurial, you will get used to obvious and simple things being obvious and simple, which will make the idiosyncrasies of Git seem even more idiosyncratic.
Mercurial OTOH is just so intuitive: http://hginit.com/1 -

Have you ever been in a situation where you're assigned to a new project, check the codebase and start wondering you've really made a good choice becoming a developer?1
-
When your new medication has the days of the week printed on the blister pack, but you start it halfway through the week.1
-
What you gies do when you learn new technology and after that, you switch to some other new technology and you start to forgot to old one.
example: some times ago I start to learn nodejs and after code couple of months in it, I switch to golang but now if I look back it seems to foreign to me and I didn't create logic properly in it, unless I didn't create 1 or 2 large projects in it.2 -
In recent time, I'm thinking about to start freelancing (or at least start preparing for it).
Problem is that I'm completely new to it. In following weeks, which steps should I take to successfully introduce myself to that market? Which mistakes to avoid? Which sites do you recommend?
Thanks in advance for contribution. :) -

I want to relearn Java. I've done anything in Java the past 3 years.
I feel so lost, I can understand a java code, I just can't start a new one.2 -
Do you think that new open-source projects outside of Github don't get as much contributions comparing to Github projects.
! I mean new projects !
If you think so start your first comment on this rant with ✔, if you don't think so start it with ❌.
Reasoning is appreciated. Storys regarding this would be pretty cool.1 -
I guess every time i start working on a new project and i get to the first working build...
...that project will probably get abandoned after a while, but that's another story :( -
i am so excited learning. now i'll start refactoring my plate of spaghetti into object portions. both are new topics to me.

So when i was playing saxophone, I realized that music and coding are just the same. When you get a new score to play you need to start over by learning how to play it. When you code and start a new project you need to start from zero. When you play the score over and over you learn from your mistakes. When you code you debug your faults when there is something wrong in your code. At the exam you need to make no faults when you play music. When you’re at the deadline. There shouldn't be no faults in your code

Things got messy and messy whenever i start to learn new thing. I couldn't find how to start and where to start and what to after one....

When creating a new indie game with no budget start really really small. Because it will grow faster than you can say 'input mapping'.

Everybody's coding on the weekend
Everybody needs a new project task
You want a piece of my results
You gotta start from the start
You want to be in the contributors

Yeah essentially I'm going to be working this weekend due to protect constraints and SME being unresponsive and unhelpful1 -

Go for a walk or run outside. Get a fellow dev to play a game on the company xbox. Stop the task and start a new task from the sprint.

Went to check out some IT/Developer educations with my youngest son who will hopefully be graduating high-school next may. At one of the educations they actually used javascript as a *cough* programming *cough* language to start learning these kids the basics ... I guess that rules out at least 1 place to start his new studies.8

Google: "Your update is now live"
Me: "Excellent! Time to start working on that new feature. I guess it wouldn't hurt to make sure the new live update is working fine"
*uses new update*
*realises I have to fix something in the new live update* -
Microsoft understands we're pissed about low QA performance on updates. They're gonna bleach the Start menu and add a couple more buttons to the UI. https://theverge.com/2020/7/...9

At this stage, I feel like I'm too old to setup a new project and setup a database and write migrations and all that. I just wanna all that setup for me and I do something less mundane. It's probably why I don't start any new projects anymore.5
