Just had meeting with a potential client.
They wanted to move their existing website from the internet to the cloud 😲. I left so quick I forgot to take my business card back.14 -
Watching normal people use a computer is incredibly painful.
* slow typing
* slow mouse movements
* mouse is used for everything
* instead of hitting the back button, they'll load up a website and go through 6 pages again.
* no shortcuts!
Someone lost their tabs today (Windows crashed), so I said "press ctrl + shift + T". They were so amazed that keys could do something so advanced.
Dhcosncowhtoehwurt hrnxkxxhry he.
Honestly, if people learned how to use keyboards to their full potential, they could shave off 1-2 hours of their normal work PER DAY!22 -
Potential Employer: So your website does not seem to work well in Internet Explorer. A lot of employers might get annoyed with it.
Me: Yeah, I don't want them to hire me or even send me a message.2 -
Apparently they didn't want to hear about my vulnerabilities I found because they blocked my IP address.
Seriously? I just wanted to do a disclosure of potential exploits / security issues10 -
That personal Arduino project I made for my own use, is now going to the Paralympics in Rio with a potential medal winner.5
-
Kids, don't start programming. It's like a drug, when you've started you can't stop.
You'll skip homework and forget about any potential friends.4 -
One of my potential clients insisted we guarantee that the software we build will be bug free for a year. Was almost tempted to ask if they'll be OK if it crashes and burns after that.10

***Interviewing potential sys admins so us devs don't have to build everything and run everything***
Coworker: Do you know how to use cron and cron jobs?
Candidate: Yes I'm familiar with setting up users and permissions.
Me: 😳
Coworker: 😳
Boss: We will give you a call have a good day.
If you had just admitted you didn't know but we thought you could learn we might have been open to teaching you but brazenly acting like you know something when you don't is dangerous if you're running a multi thousand user production system.3 -
Had a fun little conversation with a potential employer...
Him: We use git for version control. To work with our team you'll be expected to do the same and be proficient at it.
Me: Not a problem. I am well versed with all things git! May I ask, what does your work flow look like?
Him: All of our source lives in a single repo and everyone commits straight to master.
Me: 😐...
Him: Conflicts will not be tolerated.6 -
You developed a completly free and open source app that was designed to do A, and it does exactly what it should.
Review from an user (2 stars out of 5):
"I tried it and it just does A, I would prefer it did B.
Thank you, but I will look for a better option. Keep working, you have a lot of potential."

I'm gonna start a software company and cleverly split up the work into pieces so that I can present them to potential employees as "coding challenges" during the interview and never actually hire them.3
-
So I found a bug in Bootstrap 4 today that was causing responsive tables to break. I looked at it for a while and threw a bunch of potential fixes at it, to no avail.
I was about to open a bug report when I stumbled upon the cause...
I spelled “table-responsive” wrong 🤦♂️5 -
PhD applications in computer science are so fucking frustrating. I have responded to so many invasive questions so far. The only private information universities haven't asked yet, is my bra size. The only contact they haven't asked for yet, is my kindergarten teacher (And her bra size, coincidentally). The only document about a potential project I haven't given to them yet, is my freaking dissertation. None of these have anything to do with my research potential, btw. There's nothing asked of me about my research aspiration and how I actually undertake a research project.
And then suddenly it occured to me: people in Academic administration are not smart. I'm actually explaining my potential to a pretty dumb bunch (Excluding those in research, none of whom will bother with these stupid documents).
... The world seems to revolve around stupid people. Fuck.19 -
*Me enjoying life*
Brain: You're wasting your potential. You should work more.
*Me on the job working*
Brain: You're wasting your youth. You should go out and enjoy life.
WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU WANT, BRAIN?
Brain: No productivity! Only Guilt!19 -
Ok... gotta get this off my chest...
I was tasked to train a junior developer recently. Manager says he's (skill) is rusty, but has potential.
I thought to myself... "Rusty? I can deal with that... how bad can it be?"
He ran into some issues while going through the training material, and asked me for help. It was a simple task of printing something to the screen...
After glancing at his code, I said you have to make it (variable) a string. He LITERALLY types s-t-r-i-n-g...
Me: 😵💫7 -
potential new client, immediately says:
"we have to get this website to number 1 on google as fast as possible!!!!!"
god why is it always the same
i'm tempted to ask, "great, no problem, do you have thousands to spend?"
i already know what the answer is

Potential Client Project:
"HIPAA compliant WordPress website"
Me: Can you tell me more about the website you're trying to publish?
Client: Site for uploading patient medical test results
Me: 🤦♂️ Fuuuuuuck. Sorry, you're on your own.
WORDPRESS?!?!8 -
Hey fellow developers
How did you all come to know about DevRant? Just curious

Well I got to know about while stalking my potential bf social media 😅😝53 -
Senior colleagues insisting on ALWAYS returning HTTP status 200 and sticking any error codes in the contained JSON response instead of using 4×× or 5×× statuses.
Bad input? Failed connections? Missing authorization? Doesn't matter, you get an OK. Wanna know if the request actually succeeded? Fuck you, parse potential kilobytes of JSON to get to the error code!
Am I the asshole or is that defeating the purpose of a status code?!14 -
Demo's
When you show your debian linux laptop to your potential customer while saying 'it is as comfortable as working with your other os' , you open up the laptop lid.. And it freezes.
The one time you do not want it to freeze, it freezes2 -
Adylkuzz "saves" users from WannaCry
In fact, because Adylkuzz(malware that mine cryptocurrency) had infected many vulnerable machines long before WannaCry and shut down their SMB port, the malware might have accidentally saved many potential victims from having their data encrypted by WannaCry. -
Overheard my boss speaking at the pantry.
He tells the sales to promote to potential buyers that our product will only take 2 days to setup but actually the dev team has been alloted 2 weeks.
How the in fuck could we deliver 2 weeks worth of effort in 2 days!? WTF boss. Fuck you, and your double chin. I am tired of your shit.2 -
Growing up with thw crappiest netbook for 8 years, then a regular laptop, now an i3 laptop.
It pains me to see my classmates having i7 laptops and all they do with it is watch movies and browse the internet. All that wasted potential!
(Virtual Box, proccessing speeds, multitasking, and games! Donr get me started on games!)9 -
Microsoft brute-forces password-protected archives in OneDrive.
“Microsoft will decrypt, open, and scan protected Zip archives uploaded to the company's cloud servers in search of potential computer threats. Security researcher Andrew Brandt recently discovered the issue while trying to share malware samples with other researchers through SharePoint.”
This is when I encrypt my archives, I use _very_ long passwords generated by Bitwarden. Like this: qkYdE5i@27yHTTj8YsMDKQ9^mo$j@!P^M4qA95Y5VqR*53otAMuMv$9sdxtF4HAuNdAYoW9RPVxucJ3
Good luck bruteforcing that, Microsoft!

I got the job! 🥳 🎉
One company wanted me to wait a little over a week because they had other final round interviews going on. Meanwhile, during that time, I got an offer, but declined because of lower than expected salary and higher salary on the other potential offer. Later, they got back and increased the salary and changed the role to Lead. Got the role after one more round of interview. 😁10 -
Fucking idiots. How fucking stupid are you? We're in 2016 now, where basically `.motherfuckerslutshitasscunt` has the potential to become a TLD. And you still can't validate a motherfucking *.online email? FUCK YOU. I will NOT be using your SHIT MOTHERFUCKING RECRUITMENT SERVICES. DIE.4
-
Right i'm building a new interview test. Short and simple, I give the potential hire a laptop with a browser open on this: http://jasonette.com/
If he / she recoils in horror, they are hired.20 -
The phone conversation that resulted in a breakup:
Me (to the new girl): So, which service did you take?
[My girlfriend enters and takes the phone from me; I was shocked by the sudden entry]
New girl: GoDaddy!
Girlfriend slams the phone on my face.
That day, I lost 2 things: one on-going and another potential relationship ...10 -
Meetings about meetings that we're going to have to discuss the need for the next meeting wherein a potential followup meeting will be scheduled to meet for the meeting.3

Recruiter: Hello I’m recruiting for an exciting opportunity at a rapidly growing company with loads of potential
Dev: *Looks up company on google*
Dev: Their stock has been declining for the past 2 years. 3 months ago their valuation just dropped by 80%…. How are they growing?
Recruiter: Oh that happened to every company at the end of 2021.
Dev: …I guarantee you it did not.
Recruiter: …
Dev: …6 -
I make a typo in the username
"username doesn't exist"
I fix the typo and mess up the password
"incorrect password"
... I smell a potential exploit here...7 -
I was hired as JS Dev, done some projects with Angular and Node, after several months my boss told me to maintain a FUCKING PHP webapp with no documentation and shitty codebase. After he saw the results, he told me *man, you got some potential*, and he assigned me to build websites using wordpress(WTF is he thinking!). I thought that was the last time he would do something ridiculous, Yesteday he asked me if i can do Video Animation(After Effects)!!5
-
Be extremely active on GitHub! It’s a nice way to backup your code, as well as show off your skills to potential employers.2
-
Just got my beta access for Framer X. They describe themselves as "Unity for design" bridging the gap between Sketch and React using code-based components. I think it has a lot of potential. Would love some non-designer perspectives. What do the front-end devs here think of it?10
-
Today a potential client contacted me after seeing my works and said they were really interested in having me work on their project. Then, they demanded that I scheduled a call with them, using their calendar app. I did, just to them cancel it a few hours later. Without any explanation.
Deal with people is so discouraging sometimes.2 -
Hey folks, just need to get this off my chest! 😤
I finally broke free from the chains of a company riddled with politics and zero career growth. 🚫📉
But hey, I've joined a startup now! 🚀 It's a fresh start where I can escape the drama and unlock my true potential. No more suffocating bureaucracy or stifled progress. 💪💡5 -
Worst part of being a dev...working for a company that doesn't understand your potential. Knowing that you can do so much more than they are but being limited due to a myriad of excuses, budget, time, user base, etc.3
-
I swear, if I ever were to develop a support ticket system, I'd require credit card credentials for P1 tickets - "for covering potential costs to get the developer to the computer at this point in time". Let's see how many of your fucking tickets are Business critical after all!5
-
Interviewing a potential candidate...
Me: So, how would you rate your JavaScript knowledge?
Him: Pretty good, although I still don't really understand prototypal inheritance.
Me: Yeah, it's hard to understand something which doesn't exist.
...let the flaming begin 😈33 -
I fucking HATE when people tell me:
"Oh you are using Unity? What kind of dumb shit uses Unity! Isnt its only purpose to make shovelware and shit?!"
THIS MAKES ME FURIOS AT MOST POINTS! AND I WANT TO PUNCH THOSE DIPWIT COCKS WHO ALWAYS THINK ANYTHING OTHER THAN UNITY IS GOOD, IN THE FUCKING FACE! TWICE!
unity isnt just for SHOVELWARE and CHEAP SHITGAMES, it has some really good potential when in the RIGHT FUCKING HANDS!! FOR FUCK SAKE!
(If you want an example look up dronethegame.com currently in crowdfunding) FUCK THESE PEOPLE...

What the fuck is a sticker computer??
I'm researching DNA computers for school and there's a potential cryptosystem called a sticker model, based on a sticker computer. Searches across various engines show me results for laptop stickers.7 -
Anyone got any ideas on dealing with crippling depression, loneliness, a potential breakup, and managing a startup alomg side it?38

!rant
Last night I had a minor hiccup with a iOS/Android CI service I absolutely love (BuddyBuild), so naturally I contact their support to address the issue and ask about potential new plans. A couple minutes later I find out I'm talking with the CEO! Turns out he's a really nice and receptive guy who cares a lot about their service!
How cool is that!? It was nice to tell him how much I've enjoyed their product and about the headache it's saved me!3 -
When you resign, then they realise a potential developer. Before that you were just an Hooman resource.1
-
potential client, wondering why i don't answer any of his messages or calls: "I hope I haven't done anything wrong!?"
yeah dude, continually calling me MULTIPLE times after 5PM on friday (second friday in a row) is one way to "do something wrong"
these "business" types know no bounds2 -
How to offend potential clients with sales emails:
“Hey again, <name>!
Don't understand TikTok? Don't worry - you're talking to a Gen Z now.
I wanted to follow up on my previous note and see if you had any availability this week or next week to connect.”
Apparently not interested and not responding means you must be too old to understand those meddling kids and their internet toys.33 -
SAP is not a business system. Its goal is not to solve any kind of business problem. SAP is a club. Just like Supreme clothes, it's expensive for the sake of being expensive. Everyone else also knows they're expensive, and this is why you buy them. If you adopt SAP, you do it just to show potential investors that you have money. SAP is designer clothes of IT.
I kinda thought about it, and it was confirmed by a person who worked with SAP for the last 20 years.44 -
Little brother: "Since you're an SE I have a really important question that requires your skills.
Me: Okay what's up? (getting excited for potential project)
Little brother: Can you hack my ex girlfriends Facebook?
Me: *face palm* -
Blue pill: master LITERALLY every computer language on earth and be able to use them to their full potential to create LITERALLY any idea that comes to you.
Red pill: master LITERALLY every linguistic language that exists and be able to speak fluently with every human on earth
...........................
I picked the blue pill and people thought I'm weird.14 -
Is it normal for your boss to sell a product when it is only half completed and pick arbitrary deadlines to demo it to potential clients?12
-
It's cool.
I have less than four weeks before I have to have my project production ready
But why not make me waste my time in useless web based fucking trainings for bullshit HR issues I'll never deal with.
"Don't give gifts of more than $100 to potential clients!" Shut fuck up I don't work with clients.
Piss off and let me do my job.1 -
Just out of curiosity: has anyone EVER met this weird nephew that every twatwaffle potential client seems to have? You know, the one that would be happy to work for pizza and a six pack of beer and could somehow do in an afternoon the job that you know will take four weeks, and also, for some reason, has his computer in his mother's basement?4
-
"… people in the newspaper industry saw the web as a newspaper. People in TV saw the web as TV, and people in book publishing saw it as a weird kind of potential book. But the web is not just some kind of magic all-absorbing meta-medium. It’s its own thing." - Paul Ford

Just finished a technical interview for a company that asked me to submit a small app.
I guess when they had written the requirements they had anticipated it to be written as a Webform not as a full MVC application 😂. They had expected me to complete and build this single page app in 2-3 hours not in 14... 🫥 Oops
So here we are reviewing it and asking questions about my setup and what I was trying to do. They were impressed enough with it that one guy even admitted that I might be a better programmer than him. 😳 A very kind compliment, but concerning because he's supposed to be my manager...
All in all got through everything and they want me over to meet the team and see what this shop is all about.
I'm excited, they company is seeing immense growth and I might be able to bring in my expertise to expedite some of it.
Did I mention they use SVN for version control? 😳
They want to get into Git soon but they don't know how to. I guess I'll be leading that cause.2 -
Fuck you Intel.
Fucking admit that you're Hardware has a problem!
"Intel and other technology companies have been made aware of new security research describing software analysis methods that, when used for malicious purposes, have the potential to improperly gather sensitive data from computing devices that are operating as designed. Intel believes these exploits do not have the potential to corrupt, modify or delete data"
With Meltdown one process can fucking read everything that is in memory. Every password and every other sensible bit. Of course you can't change sensible data directly. You have to use the sensible data you gathered... Big fucking difference you dumb shits.
Meltown occurs because of hardware implemented speculative execution.
The solution is to fucking separate kernel- and user-adress space.
And you're saying that your hardware works how it should.
Shame on you.
I'm not saying that I don't tolerate mistakes like this. Shit happens.
But not having the balls to admit that it is because of the hardware makes me fucking angry.5 -
"It is practically impossible to teach good programming style to students that have had prior exposure to BASIC. As potential programmers, they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration." - E. W. Dijkstra
-
When your users are this dumb, it's hard to decide between making things obvious (but inviting potential errors) vs. adding a step to reduce the chance of errors (but potentially confusing people).
It would be easier if people actually read release notes...2 -
Potential client: "We need this project done, but don't have much of a budget. But, if it's successful, could result in a lot more work."
If you want me to invest in your company, offer stock.

Step 1. Learn to code .
Step 2. Exchange code for money.
Step 3. Exchange money for car, soap & a clean shirt.
Step 4. Profit.
[GOTO: Step #1]
Lol. OK on a serious note coding improved my love life, it drastically reduced the frequency of dates - but dramatically improved the quality and duration of my relationships.
I used to believe that anyone/thing had the potential to be great - and (like me) all they needed was a little time to seize an opportunity.
This essentially meant there were no deal breakers and I spent a lot of time giving people benefit of the doubt and investing a lot of time & effort supporting and trying to build on aspirations that would turn out to simply be fantasies I was indulging.
I still idealistically believe that everything/one has infinite potential - only now I know which problems are worth solving, which are purely for fun or a thought experiment and which should immediately be thrown out and refactored.
All the ambition in the world is void without drive.1 -
I must learn jQuery and NodeJS. It's amazing the potential of JS. My lastest 10 programs were written in pure JS and I made them in a few hours. As an electronic engineer I hate the high level languages but JS (and maybe Python) it's definitely excluded from the list.17
-
I just became a supporter of devRant!
I fucking love this place, and feel I've spent enough time here already to make it worthwhile...don't think I'm going anywhere anytime soon.
In unrelated news, Markey's CRA for net neutrality just needs one more vote to get started on the next hurdle. That said, I had a dream last night about Ajit Pai becoming fucking Jim Jones and poisoning us all...and to wake up the next day and find out about a potential antidote being successful is awesome!!! -
Fffuuuck you Nvidia, you worthless piece of shit company. There's a part of the world that doesn't use Windows. Grow the fuck up. Torvalds gesture makes complete sense when you get a new kickass laptop, load kickass fedora 25, but are unable to tap into it's graphic potential. You spend 2 days trying to install the fucking driver. The next day you decide to follow one blogpost instead of 2 and You're forced to reinstall fedora and the cycle repeats. The past 4 days have been painfully unproductive.11
-
Potential client once asked for a clone of Amazon, for $5000, in one month. I did not take the project.7

When there is no Grow potential at your position
Boss is not willing to give you a raise. And any other place earns 1.5x more at least with better benefits.
But you really like the position and colleagues.
That is a difficult decision to make.6 -
Who the FUCK calls to get more information about a potential employee at fucking 8:20 AM? GO RECRUIT A LIFE AND DON'T BREAK MY SLEEP YOU FUCKING VULTURE4

So I'm tryna register for classes using my college's portal, and I click on "add/drop classes", and an entire Java stack trace gets dumped on my screen, with a warning at the bottom not to expose these errors to production in order not to let potential attackers know about how your backend works. I guess nobody at the college ever read that message.3
-
So my school's wifi doesn't support my TV or something, all I know is the wifi doesn't appear as a potential connection for the TV. (Even then, when I plugged the TV into the Ethernet cable, it still gave me an error message.) Well I figured out a loophole Saturday night.
I plug the Ethernet cable into my laptop. Then activate the hotspot on my laptop. Connect to the TV through the laptop's connection. Problem solved.
Loopholes are one of the best parts of life.1 -
Why it is so difficult to find an internship for a Computer Science Student?
I do have good resume, I am full of energy, I can spend a lot of time on solving problems and development. I can learn new things.
But everyone wants a intern who knows everything and can do miracle for them. No one is giving chance to ones who are in learning phase. Just try us and you will see the potential in us.
Been trying to get a good internship from last 3 months. 😔7 -
I've met a potential client who has a popular website, but it was last designed in...get this...1995. The design literally has not been updated since then, except to update content via Dreamweaver. DREAMWEAVER! Sure, it runs fast in terms of page speed. But it's using tables for layout, has no CSS, and tags that have been deprecated for over 15 years now. And, of course, it's hosted on GoDaddy. Just...wow.8
-
My dissertation at university was to analyse chat logs of pedophiles in the hope that the application of a density metric could flag up both explicit chats between parties (which it did very well) and more importantly flag up potential on going grooming (it was a bit hit or miss) I love telling people about this because it freaks them out2
-
Just had an interview with our new potential product manager. I companioned our CEO, if technical questions arise...
First, he came to our office, to the interview, and never..never looked at our application. Neither he saw some screenshots, review's or anything related to the product. As a potential product manager...gasp
And he really tried to impress me, by mentioning what a great full stack developer he also is (LOL), with years of experience in frontend and backend.
But, since I am an android software developer, he mentioned he don't like java. But he loves java script...
Me: ehhh what? So you compare apples to oranges. Why do you don't like java? (And I could image a lot things ...)
Him: because unlike JavaScript, java is a mess when writing code.
Me: ok Iam done.9 -
It's cool finally seeing real world feedback for something you developed and programmed yourself, I'm still in college and I'm trying to start a company with some software I came up with, and it's being taken very well from potential clients!🙏🏻3
-
I'm about to quit my job this week to start my own software company... I have a meeting this friday with the first potential-client and I feel very anxious about it. I also feel scary because if this doesn't work probably I will stay unemployed with a 30K debt because of my Mac
Scary but anxious... Feel pretty excited, wish me luck guys!14 -
It bothers me when potential employers *require* a salary expectation in your application. It's like they're focusing on the wrong parts. I don't even consider places that do that, no matter how cool the job sounds. Remember kids, in negotiations, the first one to mention a number loses.5
-
Freelance client calls freaking out because she needed the website changes done by yesterday morning because she had some huge meeting with potential investors....
I feel bad but I don't, she never told me anything about needing it done by Sunday morning.
This is exactly why I hate freelance work. Lack of communication and then they blame you5 -
Me: Let's implement this integration test suite in Python since it has got plenty of rich libraries for accomplishing our goals.
Client: Let's use Node.js instead.
Me: With Node.js, we'll need to handle a lot of it's inherent stuff like asynchronous code flows, promises, etc. That's not what we primarily want to achieve.
Client: Let's use Node.js.
Me: Okay. What potential advantages do you see with Node.js?
Client: Umm.. let's just use Node.js?
Me: FML4 -
I work for a consulting company, my boss comes into the room full of engineers trying to work on Adwords campaign and asks us what words to use. "Should I use blockchain, I heart that's popular. What about AR?" None of us have ever touched any of those technologies and he's going to try and market us as such to some poor potential client he's going to B.S to. Get me out of here.2

* TALKS to someone from Portland about a potential Amtrak trip to Portland.
*opens youtube after an hour or so*
Top suggestion -> TOP 25 things to do in PORTLAND
Good old days where we use to laugh off such "coincidences" as Paranoia! Now this shit scares me for real7 -
I got a degree in music performance. But at the end of it, I decided that I enjoyed the finer things in life, like having a house and, you know, food.
So I struggled through some entry level jobs until folks noticed I had potential, and a kindly manager paired me with our database developer. The rest is history!1 -
Ever have a bug that *only* occurs in your production environment? How do you test potential fixes? 😜5
-
I just got a fucking job again after 2.5 months between jobs and the new place has been allowing (if not encouraging) the piracy of Windows Server in client environments... I thought this place had so much potential but I was wrong.
Going to start looking for another full time job or really buckledown and try to get my freelance project/business started.
BTW fuck microshaft for expensive licensing, but I’m not risking my certs and professional career for some idiots trying to pirate software.3 -
i do not know how i fixed it, but it works so i’m done for the day.
any potential repercussions are a problem for future me3 -
LoL, why do we even have job reference contacts? So your previous manager can tell your new potential employer how much you sucked?
It's all so pointless..12 -
Spend >3 days preparing a proposal to a potential client...made it a bit cheaper to get into the company...
Now I'm too cheap to be good apparently...
FUCK CLIENTS!!!1 -
Was working on my game engines scripting language for the terminal and this is how things went in roughly the space of 30 minutes
"Ok let's get a basic language structure defined..."
*Time passes*
"Ok, so now I have basic structure and concepts of a potential auto translation framework, external library use and just a dash of complicated file structures and use"
And I still haven't written a single line of code except for ignoring whitespace when starting to lex the file to transpiling ;-;2 -
Hi devRant;
What’s your opinion on ‘open source’
Pros for and cons against its use. I’m curious
Reason for my question
I just met a programmer on the bus who is vehemently against open source starting he goes out of his way to not use anything ‘open source’
I myself use open source tools everyday in both my programming classes and outside projects. I vehemently believe the global collaboration potential of the open source concept is key to building bigger and better software and hardware in the future9 -
Mobile (Android/iOS) gaming has such potential but publishers keep pushing out mindless garbage. What's the point of getting a gaming phone only to spend your time playing gatcha games?5
-
Every Monday I am privileged to wake up 1. 5 hours earlier and listen to executives talk about what meetings they had with potential customers and what news about ongoing agreements with other potential customers (which have been in the pipeline for 1 year or more sometimes)
Why is this necessary?? There has been virtually no progress on any of the topics discussed. At least nothing that concerns us devs.
Instead we get to wake up earlier, waste 1 hour, and get bored listening to what essentially seems like a sales speech while convince the employees the company is not spinning its tires while stuck in the mud.3 -
Well I asked what Wednesday could bring in my last rant.
Potential redundancy apparently. Company I work for has just been bought and no one knows if any jobs are safe.
The question is do I still have a interviewing suit? (One that fits)5 -
Describing a friend's project to a friend:
"And then theirs a tinder like element, for filtering potential dates, but that's not implemented yet."
"Why doesn't he just copy tinder?"
"Er... wat?"
"You know, just copy their code and put it in his app."
"You don't... you can't... I mean you can decompile... but that's not useful because... it just doesn't work that way. For a million reasons. I don't know where to begin."3 -
I wanna work for a company that develops cool algorithms and implements them. Where the devs analyze complex issues and have to do complex problem solving. Where everyday is a challenge. Not a place where simple repetitive UI bugs are the issue at hand. Not a place where the only tasks and todos are trivial and uninteresting. Not a place where most of my coworkers are idiots.2
-
Musk's OpenAI beat the top professional Dota2 players in the World. That's pretty impressive. AI has a lot of potential for the future. BTW, any Dota2 players here? My son complains that he ends up on Teams that don't speak English. Dota2 can be modded. Imagine a mod that interfaces with Google Translate and does on the fly translation. Beyond my experience level. Way beyond.3

I’ve been out of steady work for almost 2 whole months now but things are starting to look up...
I’m super stoked for some potential client projects!!! I have one client that wants me to completely rebuild their businesses infrastructure, PC refresh, server upgrade, network overhaul for 3 sites, and more. This new client has a business partner with another side business and wants to discuss potential work/projects. And I’m going to be discussing a potential contract deal on Thursday to develop a custom software for another client.
Guys! My startup is starting woot!!!3 -
Just read an article stating you shouldn't buy windows 10 home and should buy pro instead because of 'potential performance increase' due to some of its 'added performance technology'...
Do I need to say more?4 -
Am annoyed. Not mad, just very disappointed. So the guy I emailed yesterday about doctoral research positions hasn't responded yet, and this is causing me somewhat of rejection anxiety, specially considering recent events.
Honest to god, if this one fails I'm abandoning academia and research and making cool stuff. Fuck society. I could make so many useful life saving stuff, but they didn't let me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Also, I'm enjoying my current minimum wage occupation. It's stressless and repetitive and I pay fuckall for tax. I didn't want to go antisocial, but I was driven here. So there. This is why y'all can't have nice things. 🎤💧8 -
I spent a month trying to understand how to split our application and setup a pdf server to manage 10'000> pdf documents generation at the same time.
Today during our monthly meeting, our dear Key Account Manager, said he's not selling pdf generation to customers since one year at least, and he's not planning to sell it in the future.
Nobody knew about that apparently. We had also some demo guys showing actually the functionality to potential customers.
Also nobody believe me when I say we should start a project to monitor used functionalities in our application.
Just wasted one month of my fucking extra-time. Now I'm late with a lot of other tasks, apparently more urgent that the potential scalability issue of a functionality we don't use.
Key Account Manager rules.
Key Asshole Manager.
I think we should hire a Key fucking-COMMUNICATION Manager -
LOL, somebody thought Zoom was secure! Hahahahaha! Some people were caught planning violence and a potential coup...on...Zoom!
The lack of understanding of technology creates interesting convergences of events.
So, if you are planning to break the law, don't use Zoom. Mmmkay?5 -
So I decided to start using NoScript in Firefox recently, and it's been the most wonderful and annoying experience.
Wonderful - Easy to use whitelist on a domain basis makes it easy to un-break websites I trust while keeping potential malicious JS from other domains out.'
Annoying - Now I get why all the graybeards on Hacker News hate what the modern web has become6 -
Our new potential customer requires us to have <Feature>.
Can you implement <Feature> before your vacation? We'd like to roll it out while you're away.
<Feature> has been in discussion since 2018, our competitors developed it for years while we deemed it too much effort, my vacation starts next week and it is fucking Wednesday.1 -
When your one rant that showed real potential to get you that stress ball has now slowed. Each new upvote revives the hope and you think - c'mon c'mon, nearly there!8
-
Today I got a message from a potential client. See following excerpt:
Me - "ok I'll need you to give me a brief before I can send you my quote."
Potential client - *sends me only a screenshot from the damn App Store showing an existing app with the desired features*2 -
Go to meetups and talk to people. Give presentations at meetups if you can. Get involved in community projects. Love coding. Use your downtime to study new stuff.
When talking to potential employers be positive and enthusiastic about your technology.
EDIT: Oh, a few more. Don't seem desperate for a job. Without saying anything, potential employers should feel like you have other offers and they're being evaluated by you. Ask questions about their company if you get an interview.
Try to give off an air of being in control and having a number of choices in your carreer (even if you're living off ramen every day).
The pressure should be on companies to hurry up and snap you up before another company does.
Be honest but a little spin won't hurt. -
“We will send you a code challenge :)”
Or if we are being serious, I like it when we discuss projects I or they have worked on and what was interesting and challenging about them, and what was done to overcome obstacles and why. I really like when we discuss potential options and why one was taken over another one. -
I am building my portfolio website and added a contact section. In the API call to the backend, I am logging potential API failures to Firebase Analytics. Is it ethical to include the request data (content of the contact form) in log data?5
-
Got contacted by a potential client whose job I had bid on. Spent a couple of minutes frantically studying his specification and preparing my discussion.
Turns out the job was fake. He wanted me to create a new profile, verify it with my white European identity and then let him use it to approach Western clients.
The best part? I'm as Asian as he is, and all my profile pictures bear witness to that fact.
Some people smoke some really special stuff...1 -
Finishing my interaction design study. I'm scared, because the headmasters change their mind, everytime i adjust my potential thesis theme for them. 😕
-
They actually support me.
My mother, grandfather and grandmother think I'm a highly skilled mage.
My father, who thought me how to use torrent, sees my potential and wants me to become a developer in his company.
I explained him the basic concepts of Bitcoin, block chain and AI and thinks. He wants me to create a cryptocurrency 😮😃.
All the more reason to invested into cryptocurrencies (pun intended). -
Javascript days are counted... I've been away from the dev world for a little bit and instead of writing bugs I've been invested in reading news portals and checking on fucking frameworks...
Web Assembly its gaining traction and projects like Blazor are already showing its potential... I cant wait for things be v1, in any case... fucking Javascript its soon to be "that fucking shit we use to use".
No one truly likes javascript, and if you do like it you are probably the kind of person who like to rape babies anyway.8 -
- Install Overwatch via Lutris on Linux.
- Get absolutely terrible performance and rendering bugs.
- Disable DXVK.
- Get slightly better performance (wtf?).
- Still runs at like 20% of potential performance.
- Give up and try to install Windows.
- Windows install fails.
Aaand so I spent my weekend configuring shit instead of relaxing/gaming. Ugh.9 -
Anybody else feel like their Internet traffic constanty being monitored after downloading pen testing tools?
Have our identities been added to lists of potential cyber criminals :/
Thoughts?
(For ethical purposes - involving your own site's security!!)2 -
I hate being able to hear my boss in meeting with potential clients. Promising the earth then when the meeting is done tell me we have a week to make it. Not only that but then ask me what half the stuff he's sold actually is and does!?2

Hello, brilliant minds!
I am participating in a hackathon based on web development and I need to submit potential problem statements for the same. They have some predetermined domains, but I am unable to look for a suitable problem. The domains are:
1. eCommerce
2. eGovernance: Smart City
3. Fitness
4. Social Innovation
5. Tool/Library/Extension for devs
6. Travel
7. Women's safety
I will have 6 hours to code. Please suggest some of your best ideas. Thanks in advance!
Love,
TheSlug13 -
Today, a few thousand dollars of potential equipment being replaced was prevented by deciding to follow the network cords and finding out that the switchboard had the power cord knocked loose.
Payment was in candy.3 -
What's everyone's opinion when it comes to PWA's?
Do you think they will have the potential to replace most desktop and mobile applications?
Personally think they are a great platform and could definitely see them replacing lots of current applications but feel like the web technologies can't catch up to some of the major requirements for higher level apps like game engines or games...10 -
Today I implemented a system for storing all errors in a global store in Vue. That means field validation errors, API errors and potential generic errors. It works really well, and displaying an error is as simple as referencing it's source, if any. Flexibility at its finest.

Fuck Java because java is one of the worst first languages you could pick. In the following I’ll highlight two main issues. One issue, the complexity of Java, will make life more difficult for you immediately, and the other, the danger of developing myopia regarding programming languages and their capabilities, has the potential to hurt you for many years to come and possibly your entire career9

Two friends of mine (one of which actually introduced me to devRant) refuse to post on here.
...there's no need to explain that I want them to enjoy devRant (at it's full potential) with me but they don't see a point in writing.
Would you be so kind and give them some motivation/reasons in the comments? What's the point of dev-ranting?9 -
What better way to learn a language than creating something with it. So I went ahead and made an API for devRant in crystal.
https://github.com/iostreamer-X/...
And I swear that language has potential. It flawlessly(almost) combines the best of both worlds(interpreted and compiled).
IGN: 7/10 Too new but fresh af1 -
Was a PC repair guy. A wealthy man saw that I have potential, asked me to build a website. I started learning how to code. Frustrated, quit the job, and bummed off for weeks. Started fresh, like magic, everything seemed easier without the pressure. Freelanced for a few years, now at a media company, as an XD.3

Recruiter: we're looking for someone who knows .Net and "JAVA practices".
Me: <WTF is "java practices">
Me: <googling "java practices">
Me: dear recruiter, I know dotNet and good programming practices but there isn't thing like "java practices" in dotNet.
Recruiter: <no shit given>

!rant Need advice. Been wanting to switch to Mac-based dev for a while and finally found an $810 new-in-box iMac 21.5" 4K with retina / 3.1Ghz quad / 8GB / 1TB bought new from BestBuy late 2016 but manufactured sometime in 2015. Never opened. Any potential pitfalls with that and expected OS updates or dev tools?6

I can never forgive Apple for the iPhone X. Not because it's a bad phone or that it is overpriced. But because they missed the perfect opportunity to make the back logo the fingerprint scanner.
I mean seriously, just think about the marketing potential. They finally had an excuse to cut that hole in the back of the cover.1 -
So the company I work at is moving to a new location. We are a small company, so we were all talking about potential problems with the move - network, internet, firewalls, access to servers and so on. Us trying to cover all possible scenarios.
Our CTO looks up and says: “or we could just cross our fingers and hope for best”.
WTF🤯2 -
Question for you all:
You're expecting an important call from a potential employer sometime today (no specific time, just business hours)
When you get the call, you're on the toilet, absolutely ripping ass. Do you let it go to voicemail and call them back later? Answer the phone and take the whole call on the toilet? Take the call and discreetly try and finish your business? Take the call and explain that you need to call them back in about five minutes? Is there a right answer?10 -
Good recruiters do not ask who are the other companies or recruiters who contacted you.
Good recruiters understand that potential applicants have greater needs than purely monetary compensation in their offers.
Good recruiters do not threaten you with a hard deadline to decide whether or not you'll accept their offer.
Good recruiters do not ask for referrals if you turn them down.
I've yet to meet a good recruiter.1 -
Last Friday night instead of partying, or seeing a movie I stayed home to clean up some code for a potential job interview. Good times! :D3

Realising that my skills were stagnating and there was no opportunity to improve them or grow my career.
After 5 years in the same job (longest I've held) I started looking for a new one.
I'm now in a new job, doing much better work (even if it's a little chaotic right now) with the potential for growth in the future.
Whilst I loved the old job in terms of the staff and the atmosphere, I now couldn't be happier I made the decision.1 -
In response to https://www.devrant.io/rants/334693
Resume is updated. Had an old HR co-worker friend reach out. Had a tour of the office. Introduced to the hiring manager. Scheduling a coffee with my potential boss. I really want this!3 -
Those working as freelancer, how many times has a potential client told you that if you do this job for cheap he would refer you in his business circle and you would for sure get atleast X projects in next quarter ?4

God why is it so hard to let go with people around, especially potential friends or partners... It could be so easy to just have fun and do the things you always think about, but then you mess it up and that somehow.. purposely.3

Potential client emailed me this as a design for the website he wants me to create..
Is there anyone here who would like to explain this design to me? I assume it's a landing page.14 -
Looking at resumes of potential candidates again. I could write an entire blog about how funny these things are at times.3

because i saw the potential ((and) power) of games since the first moment i ever moved my joystick in one, and i wanted to be a creator of such powerful magical universes.

New question to ask potential employers: What makes this work so difficult? is it innovative or in a challenging domain? Or is it because of a poorly documented, poorly maintained code base between multiple groups that can't agree on terminology?
Though if you ask, you should probably be more polite than I am hearing this in my head.2 -
#RANT_AHEAD
Almost everyone nowadays uses a PC, Laptop, Smartphone but sadly not even 60% of the total potential of the hardware is being used.
.
And no - you don't require custom cooling to use the whole 100% of the total potential, stock cooling is more than enough.
.
IRL "programmers" these days don't do any fscking effort to optimise their code and give it all up as some kinda shitty "hot patch" - code of their looks disturbing with no security features + optimisation. (wAnBlOwS products remain an example)
.
Even when you're using python you can push your project to limits. Instead of shoving face-size ASCII banners why don't chaps stress test their projects? Oh I forgot the community runs on show-offs and CVs ...
.
Note to Self : Optimisation is the key to integrate Technology with Nature.2 -
How long can you work in a role with no potential that bores you shitless but pays an astronomical amount?15

I dont dare share my github with potential profesional partners, its 40% contributions, 10% my public projects and 50% insulting other libraries in their issues because i become irritated when i cant get it working :P

Biggest dev ambition? I've got a couple.
For my career, becoming the "go-to-guy" or even lead architect at an ambitious and professional software company. For my free time, releasing one or more apps that people find useful. Also releasing and maintaining a piece of open source software that devs find useful and see potential in. Inspiring others in general.
Those are some goals I've had from the very beginning.2 -
A potential client wants me to fix a critical bug on their app. She wants us to book a call so she can explain the issue to me.
Because so many clients have wasted my time in the past, I want to charge her some $$$ for the call. However, if the gig goes through, it’ll be deducted from her bill.
Does this make any sense?3 -
I've been developing an application off and on over the past year and a half for fun. Was a good excuse to learn something new.
It is to the point now that it has potential (still needs tons of work) to be much better than several existing applications out there doing the same thing.
I am feeling overwhelmed because I either need to a) seriously invest time into it to make it a fully fledged tool and try to sell it b) open source it and see if other people find it worth working on or c) just abandon it and move on.
Has anyone else been in this type of situation knowing there is potential but honestly may be more than you can do as a single person?7 -
I hate how the world works sometimes, get a potential chance to work in my dream job after having no contact from any other workplaces and boom, as soon as I might be on the right track I get offered a full time position as a level 1 help desk technician... Fuck3
-
(On conference call with potential client)
Me: ...yes, you can interface with our system via our documented interfaces, using either JSON or XML...
Client: That's too hard. Can I just email you guys a Word doc or something?
Sales Rep: Yep, we can totally handle that, no problem.2 -
I just realized I didn't make my first post a hello world post and I just threw away a bunch of potential upvotes. Hopefully it's not too late. Hello world!1

I was discussing scope and budget with a potential client for a side project. It involved a good bit of complex postgresql and subsequent aggregations and creation of reports. He was hiring because the last guy's work was so poorly documented, they couldn't verify its accuracy.
Me: "So, what are your thoughts on a budget?"
Him: "We were thinking something like $15/hour."
Me: "Um...ok. If I can ask, where did you get that number?"
Him: "That's what we paid the last guy."

Want to weed out bad Devop potential hires? Ask them how their ideal branching strategy is designed. Such a simple question will tell you a lot!4

Anyone else makes 50 projects in a popular framework then never finishes them and they just sit there with all the potential untouched and unknown to the world? Well that would be me!3
-
Pro tip: don’t accept a meeting with a potential employer for the beginning of your holidays (I know, ’muricans, you don’t get this concept where basically everyone taked paid vacation for several weeks during summer) so that you’ll end up thinking about whether to jump ship or not for most of your holidays, effectively ruining your time to potentially relax for you.
Just don’t do it. -
where should I start, having something different to work on weekly, being able to work from home, alot of income possibilities, can easily start your own businesses, compared to other jobs a good community, if there isn't something you want made you can make it, and if you can think of an idea for a website or program you can make it.
-
Another words to explain that you are utilize computer to the maximum potential is: I can warm my meals without microwave 😂5

After github next potential targets are jetbrains and slack so they are done with all competition for next 2-5 years. We can’t beat them but we can always buy them.2

Was in awe for the democratic potential of the worldwide web, and wanted to help realizing it. I was blind to its corporate potential back then.

i guess im learning COBOL now..
didn't even know, this language still exists, and is alive until the Lead of the Department came around and asked me if i know that language, because they have a potential customer Project.
Others said, i shouldn't do it, but i'm also curious.
At the very least i will check it out 🦕5 -
Is it normal to work at a company that claims it has an R&D department (in which I work), but nobody actually does the 'R' part... like never?
I think I have potential in researching. What should I do?1 -
Social media site/app... I think social media is such a saturated market yet everyone seems to think their spin is somehow unique and worthwhile...
Although, not sure if DevRant counts as 'social media' but tbh I see real value in getting developers to form a community, where to profit potential comes from potentially linking developers to recruiters/employers (targeted ads to devs for shit we would want). And devs get a nice platform to socialize and bullshit about things we all experience (ie, the 'community' is real and valuable to us)1 -
PM: Can you help out writing a test suite for feature X? Really high priority!
Me: Ok, give me a day or so.
I get it done, and setup in CI-tool to test on the feature branch.
*Next day*
PM: It doesn't work! Can you have a look?
Me: Uhm yeah.
Only broken on feature branch of course.
Dev working on feature X: Ok pushed a potential fix, can you run test suite again?
PM: Yes, can you get on that asap?
CAN YOU RUN YOUR OWN FUCKING TESTS?

Questions/best practises for git?
For example:
- use present tense in commit messages. (why though?)
A friend of mine also starts his commit messages with either [Task] or [Cleanup]. Useful for finding Commits in Gitlab etc, because only the first line is shown from the message.
Also, one teacher recommended the usage of branches and the other didn't because of alot of potential merge conflicts when working in a Team or a larger Collaboration. What are your thoughts?
Sorry for the messy post, have a hangover4 -
Completely forgot to update what was going on with my potential role shift. Long story short, it was approved by the damagement. That’s nice.
I only have to get to a major milestone in my current giant of an IaC project and transfer enough knowledge to leave it in my current team mates’ hands. Looks like we’ll be there pretty much next week and I can switch at the start of 2023. Life’s good.1 -
Thinking about going back to school for a potential career change. Has anyone regretted going back to grad school after awhile in the work force?4

I have two potential client meetings next week. The first one now knows she needs a website (but I have no clue what her budget is), I think she wants me to host the site as well as do site maintenance. The second potential client I'm working using the barter system (but I think she will end up owing me some money at the end). We will see how they both go.2

Uni nowadays be like:
Lecturer says everyone should come up with an idea, find out how much it costs, figure out the competition, write a business plan, find out the development costs and indicate your value proposition. Best idea gets an A.
This is more like trading an A for a potential billion dollar idea.2 -
What is your preffered way of branching and potential integration of issue tracking?
Just curious to see as this topic causes a lot of discussions in office the last days.5 -
Currently on a project to use AI as music recommending model, an interactive AI model generator and researching on Distributed Systems altogether in three different teams for each thing...

Oh god Fucking pick me to the hell NOWWW -
Literally begging my brain to relax so I can sleep.
I've gotten my drive and passion for coding back (Working on a project that'll be released for beta soon) but unfortunately, the sleepless nights came back with it.
It's currently 6am and I want to sleep but soon as I close my eyes, I see more features, optimizations and potential bug fixes. I have a slight migraine which is quite annoying.
Wish I could turn my brain off on command. Please make it stop 😔17 -
My stackoverflow question is getting upvotes and already 30+ views. No complains, just getting actual replies and potential code solutions. Does that mean im becoming a god?5

How do I interview or access a potential teammate? What are the things to look out for and what are the appropriate questions to ask?

Tonight begins the holiest day of the year for Jews, Yom Kippur. I'm about to embark on a 25 hour fast, no food, no water. I'll be in a prayer house for 15+ hours, literally begging God to let me live for another year.
Meanwhile, I'm set back in my classes 150+ hours of potential work time thanks to all the Jewish holidays this month. Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, Simchat Torah, and Rosh Hashanah.
Being Jewish is fun T_T10 -
I've always considered myself a stalwart proponent of strong, effective security. But I'll be damned if my company's security policy isn't choking it's developers out.
It's like whenever a developer requirement and potential security vulnerability meet, the company doubles down on the security side, ignores their dev's needs entirely, and then takes a privilege away just to punish us for having the audacity to try and do our God damn jobs.6 -
1) Having the opportunity to read and write the future, with no one telling you that you can't
2) feeling superior to non-techies because as this world gets more and more digital every day, you have more potential to control them or make them dependent on you
3) hopefully the AI overlords will be more peaceful to programmers because we created them....3 -
So the time has come for me to officially say "Fuck IE".
The potential client, one of the major hospital chain in the country, wants the site to work in Internet Explorer. Can't believe they are still clinging on stupid IE because Google Chrome is insecure 😂
There is no way all the charts and graphs we made would work in IE.
To top it off, the "bluffon" boss came up with idea of using flash to display this features on IE.
It's fucking 2017!!8 -
Someone has a cloud VM running automated attempts to sign up at our website, which is causing the payment processor to block us because of all the suspicious credit card creation attempts, so we get no new signups... I suppose implementing recaptcha is a potential solution/mitigation for this? Do you guys have any other suggestions?12

iPhones have never been more unlockable, as literally a picture of someone on your phone can be used to unlock their phone.
On the subject, I would also like to know what the point of an unlock is? If a criminal has my phone, they are stealing it, period. If a good Samaritan has it and wants to identify the owner, they can't because there is a lock.
This means that the only potential way that I am ever getting it is that there is no lock and a good person found it.3 -
I'm just a developer. So why the heck do I have to spend whole days talking to potential bussiness partners, discussing possible deals, preparing plan for next year and organizing various coworkers (including some managers) to fulfil the other deal that I haven't helped to negotiate. If I wanted to track so many things, speak to so many people and not write a single line of code whole days, I would have became manager and would ask for different salary!2

Any suggestions to work on coding (php/sql atm) during downtime while at work? I've been learning css and js (front/back) for a year while unemployed. Just got IT call centre job in highly monitored corporate environment. Have potential side programming job but need more practice.4

I really hate terrible lecturers. A lecturer that cannot hold a class does not make a good lecture, even if the material is boring. Often I find myself drifting off into my thoughts and potential ideas.
Sigh.
Do you guys have similar issues or had when you were a student?4 -

So i got this service i made for fun and learning. Theres many providers in it for money, not me, only a little (lets not lie to ourselves).
Id just like to have a handful of happy clients to make it pay for itself so i dont lose money.
I have no idea how to advertise or gain clients. Those potential clients i cling with are from US and the server is in EU, and i wont convince anyone to buy something i wouldnt buy myself.
I suck at marketing.2 -
Looking for potential clients on Upwork is like finding a holy grail these days.
Cheap clients with laughable budgets and high expectations on the right.
"Devs" and "Designers" with questionable skills who will work for the lowest rate possible on the left.
And don't forget the ever growing service fees and absurd measures like turning your profile private if you don't make any income in 30 days. Suuure, that's totally going to help anyone who isn't willing to work with low rates.
I am getting done with Upwork. Back on Elance I managed to get a couple of really good clients for long term projects and good commissions. Here it's impossible, even with lower rates.
You're competing against people whose portfolio involves changing a few colors for a envato template or logos made of stock graphics, and they are still more likely to be hired over you because they are willing to work on a t-shirt design for $4!
Networking is where is at. Getting contacts, talking to people, force yourself to introduce to companies as a potential asset.
That's how you get the good projects, right?
... Right, folks?1 -
Probably the first time I actually wrote a poc exploit for something we didn't write but were trying to win the maintenance contract for. I remember being In a pre-tender meeting showing it off to the potential client. Their face was amazing as my little script exported their database by exploiting some very shady search functionality.
PS. I had permission to do it, don't break systems you don't have permission to break, we also won that contact 😁 -
Recently, I launched a website to practice and perfect a lightweight Larval CMS that is forcing me to learn Databases and good sanitization practices.
Trolling Zuckerberg's Facebook for Images to make potential MeMes, I can't help but notice he has quite a ridiculous and unrealistic amount of instances in which he seems to be talking to military and government officials.
Figured I'd use the old humor as a weapon to shed light upon this. -
Anyone considered substance use to make you a better programmer? Personally I struggle with concentration for more than 6 hours a stretch and I just started vaping with no nicotine but I just read this and maybe it's what I need?

Why do developers out there think java is a write off just because of kotlin's existence? Java isn't going anywhere fam, you know how large the community of Java programmers is? You'll hardly find stackoverflow answers written in kotlin. Kotlin is the official language just as c# is for Microsoft but that doesn't stop anyone from writing windows software with java. Stop scaring potential java programmers with "ANDroId iS rOotiNG For kotlIN" for fucks sake.3

Got reminded of this a bit ago.
When I was in high school years ago, there was some bug with youtube not working on chrome. The source of that bug was identified by a guy a grade above me, who not only reported that, but also how to fix it.
Naturally, google was like "holy shit, we gotta get this guy" and offered him a full ride scholarship and a guaranteed job when he got out.
He now works at a comic shop with no plans of using that scholarship.7 -
Garbage collection incentivizes shit and cuckold programmers. Change my mind.
Reason is basically, it's easy to design a bad architecture, potential bugs are just delayed and waiting to happen later. There are still resources like databases, whose management is more or less like memory that you never learn to do properly because of GC15 -
When am trying to explain my app to potential client. And he behaves as he knows this app way better than me ? 😒1

The factorization shit I'm always ranting about? I decided for once to explain it visually in this handy dandy little infographic.
We're essentially transforming the product from an unsmooth set of potential factors in its factor tree, to a factorization tree that guarantees first that the set of potential factors are all 2, 3, 5, and a or b of p, and second, that all the factors are *smooth integers* of a or b.
This is basically what Adi Shamir was trying to do with TWINKLE and TWIRL, despite checking a hundred thousand+ potential primes.
I did it in four.7 -
Have you ever smelled fuckery, like the "the potential answers to my questions are 4 years old and unanswered" kind of fuckery?

I am really going through my system settings quite often to find potential trojan horses, spyware and what-not that installed itself over time (most security threats come through windows updates IMO).
I was baffled to once again find a bunch of "auto-allowed"-settings that are a potential threat to the security of my system, accompanied by their mysterious services and processes that now appeared (dont know when exactly, but last time I looked, probs a month ago, they pretty surely didnt exist!)
Have a look for yourself.
I of course am in the middle of migrating to linux due to the increasing severity with which Microsoft threatens PC-Security (and mine along with it).

I watched a little bit of F8 yesterday. I felt as If usually do when I see something like this "oh wow this is so cool, look at the things we can do with friends now wow"
Then you realise that it's never how they market it. You get so excited at the potential -
PROTIP: If you go outdoors for recreation and you happen to be hiking in dry country where there is obviously a lot of potential tinder around you, don't be a dumbass and light off fireworks.
The lingering smell of burning is not conducive to creating software.

I just read Robert Martin's chapter on the Single responsibility principle in Clean Architecture.
In it he explains that stakeholders, or actors, that require their own functionality that may be similar to others should have separated code. This is because 2 actors == 2 potential reasons for change.
But this seems to run counter to DRY. Am I mistaken?12 -
Anyone out there ever had to deal with WordPress in Azure? Do you have any horror stories to share? I’m working on convincing a potential BIG client to switch away from Azure and need some good examples of why it’s not as suitable for large-scale hosting and management of multiple WordPress installs as other solutions available.6

Anyone ever heard of or worked with iTechArt
I have a potential job offer from them but they want to shell out 100USD for a background check. No other employer has ever required this.
Their online presence looks legit but this has me a bit spooked as 100USD isn't chump change in ZAR
Edit: They contacted me via Fiverr7 -
Just found out what deadlocked processes are and it really has a lot of potential for teenage instagram sentimental quotes.
"Two processes that are kept on wait indefinitely because the only thing that could end the wait is an action by one of them" with some pretentious looking font and a picture of like, a rose in black and white or some shit is Instagram gold -
I have Manjaro KDE on my Acer Predator Helios 300 (dual boot with W10, unfortunately, because games/some programs needed).
I want to try another distro.
Is Fedora a good choice ? Is there any potential issue or things I should look out for ?
Do you know a good distro that runs fine on that hardware ? I'm just curious here.
Any tip before I backup my home ?
I put the / on my SSD and the /home on my HDD. Any reason why I shouldn't keep it that way ?
Thank you :-) !6 -
My friend (not technical) thinks eosio is going to be the new internet. I've looked into eos briefly and get more or less how it works and see i guess some potential, but it seems like a hype driven thing to me. He believes that he'll become a millionaire off investing probably 50k dollars @ this point into it. I get wanting to make money, but as for eosio being "the new internet" , not seeing it. Any thoughts? I'll add more thoughts in the comments soon.2

It’s amazing how many software engineers were infected by the Covid mind virus – they should be smarter than that.
That said, synthetic mRNA has great potential outside of pointless vaccines.

Any engineers here who have come to the conclusion the rushed "vaccines" are a deliberate eugenics program to reduce the world population to make way for AI, CBDC, and Globalism?11 -
I have to choose to accept an internship offer for dev role between company A and company B (potential PPO at both).
Company A: Unicorn startup ~3000 employees. A disruptor.
Company B: Early stage startup ~30 employees but has funding and all. Also, sounds promising. Loved their interview process.
Both are interesting to me and pay almost equally. Any inputs ranters?8 -
Yep we are all remote workers, but we all go in to the office every morning to clock in, and then back at 5:30 to clock out. I see a potential problem with transmission at these 2 points in the day. Plus the office is an hour away for most people and we all use public transport.1

I've talked to people, psychiatrists and tried religion just so I can stop watching porn.
I have a beautiful wife, MSc degree in engineering and well-payed job.
But for some reason, whenever I'm alone my mind bursts images of porn, and before I know it, I'm watching porn.
Despite the things I've achieved, it feels like my true potential is hold back.
This influences my mood, development work and so on.
Mindfulness doesn't work, plugins to block it doesn't work and talking to someone doesn't work. Everything is tried.15 -
Darn. I've always been storing images on IndexedDB in ArrayBuffer format. Didn't know you can actually store a File inside, not before a bug that I encountered just now. What a waste of potential 😑2

Seeing articles and stories and rants here of other devs gives me anxiety when they mention CS concepts and algorithms and stuff. My college teaches IT and not CS, so none of that more complex stuff. I begin to fear my hiring potential without that knowledge.
Luckily, there's online resources everywhere.7 -
This nonsense gave me an idea. Now I want to start building a big, organised, db for good bad examples. I can think of so many uses for it if everything is tagged/categorised well.
Thank you rando LinkedIn reject, you gave me the best birthday gift I could hope for... another potential branch of my data architecture to play with new data in new and to be discovered ways!

Having issues with senior manager.
Not able to showcase my full potential due to the way company works.
Not getting paid for what I am worth.
But I still get my work done. Because none of these can kill my passion to code. Nothing brings more excitement than deadlines.

Just spent an hour salvaging some code from an app project I abandoned so I can reuse it in the future and add what I salvaged to a portfolio of small things I've made.
It was a simple multiple player name menu that generated player objects once the user was done entering names.
Loads of potential future uses.
No point letting it sit inside an abandoned project even if it is somewhat trivial to reproduce. -
!rant does anyone know what sustainable computing is? I googled it but I don't think I understand much..like, if I took this as my major for uni then what will my potential careers be like? Is it a better choice then software engineering? 😕😕😕3

I'm a computer science student and I'm looking to start learning blockchain. I think its applications have a lot of uses and that it has potential in the future. Can you guys tell me some resources which would help me start out with it?10

Ok so I'm parts UI/UX designer in a corporate setting so I use graphic editing software like Photoshop rather extensively.
Obviously, I'm confronted to a lot of admin rights restrictions, which is to be expected.
What I'd like to know is why the f*** does ADDING A FONT in W10 require admin rights ?
What's potential security loophole could one exploit using TrueType font installation exactly ? Or are they afraid someone's going to remove all system fonts from the Fonts folder ? Anybody that does that shouldn't be allowed access a computer afterwards.2 -
Anyone else get told their rates are too high (by potential clients)? Too low (by fellow freelancers)? How does one put a value to their time and still stay market competitive?
Details: USA only. Not on any platforms such as freelancer, upwork, or fiver. Cost of living is Portland Oregon standards. Ask for any other details.
Looking for thoughts, recommended readings, any helpful input would be awesome.2 -
Can anyone recommend any tutorials and assets to use when making movies/animations in unity?
Looking to turn my book series/potential game into a little series if i can get the hang of it.
I already know im going to use cinemachine for my camera system and I'll build my own audio management and trigger systems (Hopefully).
And a side note, does anyone know of anyone who would do some 3D character modeling if i was able to provide some character concept art and have a chat with them? -
Org-mode as it has the potential to change your life :-)
Astonishing in how many different areas it beats the tools I used before.
From todo lists, documentation, publications or even presentations it ruled out my old workflows and the journey is not over . -

Our pipeline had been running for 45 minutes, I went to investigate
Our mutation testing framework had identified 90 potential mutants and started running through our 342 tests for every single mutant, so 90 * 342 tests
And I had been complaining about the amount of pipeline agents being too low and pipelines blocking up...5 -
So we having a heated debate about MS decision on introducing ads on me menu
So was saying this can be a potential critical vuln as always... its kind of like MS tread Mark now :-C
My reasoning was now ads will have direct access to pc memory since they are being delivered straight to your pc
and this other guy went on to say they are being delivered to your machine they are being delivered to explore...... and I was like WTF?? isnt explore a process running directly on your machine?? -
What do you guys think of the Adobe's new "Photoshop" on voice technology?
It's innovative, but I understand it's benefit other than heavy potential misuse it can used for.

Unlocking your potential takes time.
Throwing away time is so easy to do and we are all guilty of it. How much of your time have you wasted not living up to your potential? The answer is brutal and may overwhelm you.
You have probably wasted some of your time but at least you haven’t wasted your whole life, yet.
You still have time and that’s the best reason to stop wasting it and unlock more of your potential. It hurts to know you have been lazy or procrastinated, but it hurts even more to ignore that fact and pretend everything is great.

If I'm moderately happy in my current company but I would switch for a significant raise that offsets the relative risk, does it make sense to claim that my current salary is the bottom end of the desired range so as to encourage potential employers to start the negotiation from that point? I ask this especially because I find the act of haggling stressful.4

Hey guys, I need your honest opinion. What do you think about service provider office location? Situation is that Im looking for an office for me and two employees. Found one good location which is perf in the inside: has a private modern office, meeting rooms, skype rooms, nice kitchen and etc. However its ugly af from the outside: U need to get inside this hospital looking soviet building and take an elevator to the 8th floor to see all the modern stuff. While price seems a bargain, Im kinda afraid of how we could come across potential clients who would visit us for a meeting. As a potential client how would you judge service provider (in this case android dev company) which has nice offices in the inside but ugly af building from the outside?4

Hey fellow c++ devs, i have a question. I am currently working for a company that has a system with more than 300 000 thousand lines of maintained code and it is written in C++03. A lot of it utilises boost and custom performance work arounds and migration is currently out of the question, but I would really love to see some Cpp11 sugar in the code-base. I know there might not be too much business value to this potential endevour, but what do you think?1

AI FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE: ACTUAL PROJECTS INSIGHTS
https://sigma.software/about/media/...
When hearing ‘AI for Customer Service’ most would immediately think this is going to be ‘yet another article about chatbots’. No wonder. Chatbots have been one of the hottest topics recently. However, our experience shows that AI can be applied to many other areas of Customer Service business as well. And those possess even more potential to boost your business. -
Today, I began learning about the wonders and horrors of HA in production environments.
My head feels like when I first joined the company as a total noob who never worked an IT job in his life. Soooooooo much new information and concepts and potential issues to learn to avoid.
But all super interesting! -
So yesterday, when I went to someone else in our office to look how their pc build ended up, I decided to help them setting up windows
All pcs there are on windows 7 except for personal laptops, which I left home because I rarely need it there my colleague was working on his laptop though, so I was obviously gonna use a Windows 7 PC.
I didn't want to use 3rd party software, not because I'd think they're bad, just because I did it with the cmd a few times in the past, so I erased the USB stick and made it bootable, after that I remembered that win 7 can't mount drives without 3rd party software, but tried stuff from the Internet about xconfig, it didn't work (also I got a bit off track trying to automate some stuff of it with a .bat file cause I got tired of doing it manually)
After hassling with it for 2 hours I told my colleague to give me his laptop, mounted the drive and copied the stuff over, plugged it into the other pc and started the setup.
What annoys me is that I didn't even think of just opening the archive with 7zip or something and moving it over, or using Windows 10 in the first place...
Further, I tried to make a multiboot USB stick with different OSs today, 15 minutes of Google and a bit less for actually getting the stuff on the drive and I was done, my stupidity and stubbornness won't get in the way of installing Windows does anymore...
