Today I found out that I could inject HTML into our documentation system.
I quickly tested it with the <style> tag by setting all paragraph tags to have eye bleeding red backgrounds.
Then when seeing that it works I've made a modal that displays a blinking red alert with the headline "Access Denied!", a loading bar that says "Tracing intruder IP..." and another line "Erasing confidential information.. .".
Then I've added an animation to run on all paragraph, heading and list tags - first they bounce and then the become transparent.
Then I asked one of the interns to go to that specific document - one of the longest and most important manuals they have access to.
I then left the room and through a window watched the poor, panicking guy looking into the abyss and "realizing" that he somehow deleted the important files and will be traced down soon.
I had to tell him the truth to avoid a suicide in the office.
It was perfect! I will definitely do this to others! :D12 -
Loved the first project at the university. Your game had to load a map from txt file and create a labirynth with a player inside. It shoud include a bird's eye view and FPS-like - all using only console characters. There were some bonus points - for example for animation or built-in map editor. (language was C)29

I have made this RGB LED tie. One of my friends and me had the idea at 2 am and now it has come to reality :D
It runs on an Arduino nano, 8 rgb leds and is powered by a 9V battery.
I have prom tomorrow ('abschlussball' in german) I probably won't wear it during the official part but definitely at the party after prom.
The current animation is a bit too fast (I was listening to hardstyle while coding it) for the music they will play tomorrow at the party so I still have to make a slower one.
Tell me what you think about it :P28 -
When you show your girlfriend the CSS animation that took you 2 days to make and she gives you the most unimpressed look.5
-
You realize how beautiful it is to work in the back-end when...
"Can you move it down 1px?"
"Can you try this color?"
"Can you make it pop more?"
"Can you make the animation 0.01ms faster?"
Millions more...10 -
Received a website from a developer in my freelancing job today.

Blender.
3D modelling, UVs, texturing, animation, video editing, compositing, motion graphics, motion tracking, 2D animation, and a fucking powerful render engine? Check.
Great community? Check.
Powerful and easy scripting system? Check.
A well organized dev team? Check.
People who care about UI/UX? Check (look at Blender 2.8).
Does it compete with a major corporation that would go into sloth otherwise? Check. (If you thought M$ was shaftware wait till you see Autodesk)
There are other FOSS projects that I really like, but my vote definitely goes to Blender.9 -
Designer - *showing an animation made with after effects* Lets add this really cool animation in our website
Me - Actually that will be very difficult with plain CSS. We will have to use some heavy animation libraries, and we don’t have that much time for the project.
*next day*
Designer - Found a better animation
*shows another animation*
Me - *awkwardly* This is more difficult to implement than the previous one
*next day*
Designer - What about this one
*shows yet another difficult animation*
Me - *ashamed and questioning my skills* ummm....
Designer - you know what, just add fade-in-out7 -
If you need a loading animation when the user open the page, there's something wrong in your website11
-
Literally all they see is design.
Users can't make or receive payments across the entire app? Ah, who cares! Much more important is the color and fading animation on that button!!!!
Absolute clowns, I swear.

I like memory hungry desktop applications.
I do not like sluggish desktop applications.
Allow me to explain (although, this may already be obvious to quite a few of you)
Memory usage is stigmatized quite a lot today, and for good reason. Not only is it an indication of poor optimization, but not too many years ago, memory was a much more scarce resource.
And something that started as a joke in that era is true in this era: free memory is wasted memory. You may argue, correctly, that free memory is not wasted; it is reserved for future potential tasks. However, if you have 16GB of free memory and don't have any plans to begin rendering a 3D animation anytime soon, that memory is wasted.
Linux understands this. Linux actually has three States for memory to be in: used, free, and available. Used and free memory are the usual. However, Linux automatically caches files that you use and places them in ram as "available" memory. Available memory can be used at any time by programs, simply dumping out whatever was previously occupying the memory.
And as you well know, ram is much faster than even an SSD. Programs which are memory heavy COULD (< important) be holding things in memory rather than having them sit on the HDD, waiting to be slowly retrieved. I much rather a web browser take up 4 GB of RAM than sit around waiting for it to read the caches image off my had drive.
Now, allow me to reiterate: unoptimized programs still piss me off. There's no need for that electron-based webcam image capture app to take three gigs of memory upon launch. But I love it when programs use the hardware I spent money on to run smoother.
Don't hate a program simply because it's at the top of task manager.6 -

At beginning of this year, I only knew HTML, JS, and CSS so I just applied for offers like "Jr Apprentice Dev in Front-End"
In a interview call, the woman told me that they will send me a test asking about my JS and HTML5 knowledge.
When I look in my inbox, the mail subject says "Back-end Test".
Then I call the woman:
Me: "Hello, I have received the test mail, but maybe it's wrong. I applied for a Front-End position and the test is about backend! "
She: "Do you have skills in JS and HTML5?"
Me: "Yes!, and CSS3"
She: "Well, the test is about that. JS, jQuery, and HTML5"
Me: "..."
Me: "Sorry, that languages are Front-End. In the subject say 'Back-End' and Back-End is PHP, SQL, MySQL, Java, .Net... I don't know nothing about that. I only know HTML, JS, CSS."
She: "It's the same"
Me: "I sorry but it's not the same. Fron-End is client-side, what users sees. Animation, colors, FXs, buttons, forms... And Back-End is server-side, what users doesn't see."
She: "Well, JS, HTML, and CSS is backend for us. We call it that way too"
Me: "Sorry but that is wrong. I invite you to read some basic info. Now I am confused"
Of course that I am not confused. That idi0t was wrong.
Perhaps recruiters should take some info about areas where they are recruiting... (:T)3 -
Wow my job sucks right now. Un fuckin believable.
I got hired a month ago as a programmer. Everything went fine at first, then my Boss asked if I could do 3D modeling, and I could, I used Maya for 4 years, but I told him I only can do simple low poly models. A partner company of ours needed some help in their 3D department and I had to help.
Well, I thought, a small 3D project from time to time would be nice and refreshing, especially since it was very easy geometry, my Boss even showed me some previous projects and That was totally doable even for me.
So i started out making the first few models in blender, because we dont have anything else. After a day of getting used to blender i sent off the first models and it all began.
They wanted detailed, high poly models of some mechanical parts, my Boss originally told me it was just an abstract visualisation... fuck me...
Well I agreed to it so had to do it. The partnering Company started to change things, seemingly at random. Had a model completely modelled, textured and animated, now they want to change the model so I have to redo the UVs, the texture and the Animation god fucking damnit.
But still I thought ok, its only for a bit. Now my boss accepted even more work. Because of endless reworks I couldnt finish even one model and have to already make the new ones.
Now my boss is pissed because that company is pissed that i cant know what they want.
Big pile of misscommunication.
I hope this is over soon but I overheard that more is coming...6 -
Hello everyone.
I've seen people doing story/rant to introduce themselves, and I never done that, probably because I'm terrible at doing so, and the more people their is, the more complicated it gets for me. 😥
Usually I try to blend in, and be the same color as the wall. But I want to try something different, so bear with me as I go through this painful process. 😶
So here I am, a lonely dev, who only have friends through a screen, living in a dark room only lit by green leds (tho sometimes it turn red/pink), lost in a small street of Paris. I usually avoid posting on social media, but here on devRant, I feel alright, somehow, it feels like home... 🤗
Started developing at 14 with html and php, then css and js (with the later still being a mystery to me). 🤔
I never really had a real job. Had 3 month as an intern into a human size web agency, and despite the recommandation they gave, I didn't like the job... Dropped from school and self learned everything I know today. Did a certain amount of personal projects, but no publication for lack of confidence. As of today, I'm 28. 🙂
Then a year and half ago, I changed to c# with unity3D, and I had a ton of fun since. 😄
Learned cg effect, texturing, 3d, a bit of animation. I'm working on a project of indi game with two people that are my only social interaction outside of my family, and now devRant. I don't mind being lonely tho. 😯
But this community is awesome, so I'm glad I stumbled across that sad face on the play store. 😄
Also it's 7:30am, I didn't sleep because of this post, I'm tired, and yes I'm an idiot.21 -
rant, but not an IT kind... okay, maybe not even a rant, more like depressive rambling:
in 3 days, I'll turn 29.
i'm living with my mom, in the apartment where I was born, in the room i've been living since I was born (with the exception of 2 attempts to move out which together lasted 9 months).
my theoretical monthly income should/could be around 4000€, based on my skills and experience.
but I'm a (manic)-depressive, chronically lonely idiot loser (and the manic phases come more and more rarely in recent years), so
my practical average monthly income fluctuates from 0 to about 200.
i am unable to keep a job for more than 4 months, so after being fired from about 20 or so of them since I was 18, it takes immense amounts of mental and emotional energy to even start looking for one now... so I usually don't.
i've been about 12000€ in debt for the past 8 or so years, half of which is just debt collector fees.
it's kinda funny, for years, i've been unable to solve a debt which theoretically amounts to 3 months of my theoretical achievable salary.
my father, who just left without a word of explanation when I was 18, has decided this is not viable anymore, so I'm supposed to move out by 10th of next month, "either to some cheap rooming house, or under the bridge, I don't care", as he put it.
I can't remember how it feels to exist a single hour without feeling existential dread and dreading each next day, not knowing what to do or if i'll even be able to try and do something, because this feeling is so strong that it often blocks me from being able to do anything. i just shiver most of the time that i'm awake, feeling like you feel few minutes before puking and crying at the same time. and that feeling is my "how are you?", "you know... normal".
i can't remember what it feels to feel any other way and can't even imagine it, and can't imagine that I'll ever achieve any less shit feeling.
literally all of my social contact consists of going out once to twice a month with the only 2 friends and 2 aquaintances I have who have the time and will to spend it with me.
oh, and hiding in my room, avoiding talking to my mom, because each time we talk she just reminds me what a piece of shit failure I am, and tells me how it's not that hard to change it, I just have to stop being lazy and start working for it.
she's... kind and caring about it, which somehow maybe makes it even worse.
i have about 10 almost complete game designs, each of them at least 50% more original and interesting (at least to me) than the things that are coming out for the past 10 years, being lauded as "the most original and unique".
I have been trying to make them, ANY of them, since I was 18, but I always lose all the drive and resolve and energy in like 4 months, because it's like trying to build a city on my own on a deserted island. too big for one person, but there was never anyone to help me. closest I ever got was one of my friends telling me "i've been thinking many times that i'd love to work on some project with you, if I had the time".
and second time, when I actually found an artist I was going to pay, and he was awesome, and after two weeks of me telling him how awesome what he does is and how it fits the project and my ideas perfectly, he backed out saying "i'm afraid I can't do the quality you require from me".
never ever in my life did I get actual help with something I actually wanted or tried to do.
i have no idea how it feels to have someone working with me on something I actually consider interesting and meaningful, on any of the things which I wanted to make, which made me learn programming.
I've learned graphics and animation and everything going into game making pipeline on my own because I realized nobody will ever help me, so I'll have to do all of it on my own.
I've tried to make a kickstarter once, but I started crying hysterically in the middle of writing it, because I felt like a begging piece of failure shit, even more than usual, so I deleted it.
most of people treat me like shit failure unworthy and undeserving of living, precisely as I myself know I deserve to be treated, because that's what I am, but when I ask for permission to kill myself, since I see no other solution to stop being a burden, they get angry at me that I'm just emotionally blackmailing them. when I afterwards ask them "so help me in any way to do any of the projects i want/need to do", they respond they've got no time for that.
when I talk about all of this, I get told to stop whining.
happy 29th birthday, me, a piece of shit who should've never survived this long, who should've never been born in the first place.
yay.
also, I know this is not the kind of crap that's supposed to be posted here, but i've got nowhere else. sorry.47 -

On the screen: four text boxes cycling through rainbow color backgrounds and spinning wildly in circles.
Manager walks in.
Here's the context.
We were pair programming and working on a simple form. We were just finishing up the style, and I suggested we use a CSS3 animation to make the invalid fields pulsate a light red once.
I'm the young guy in the office, so I am most familiar with the "new" front end stuff like flex and CSS3.
My colleague was unfamiliar with CSS3 animations, so I implemented the red flash quickly and showed him.
He was curious what else you could do with CSS3 animations, so I changed my "to/ from" to a "0%/ 25%/ 75%/ 100%" style animation to show how keyframes worked. Then I made the animation iterations infinite so it went on forever. Of course, I didn't have any normal colors on hand so I just went with my debug colors: red, green, blue, yellow, etc.
We submitted the form with invalid inputs and sure enough, they flashed rainbow colors. It looked pretty funny so I thought "haha, lets quickly add rotation while we're at it"
That's the point where the education turned to a little fun but it wasn't going to take more than a second.
So we did it and it looked pretty funny and it actually made me laugh. Then we started discussing next steps on the form (back-end). Discussion lasted maybe five minutes before our manager visited to update us.
As we were discussing, the invalid controls were still spinning and rainbow colored in the background. Whoops.
The words we managed to say were just "It's invalid" and then we broke out laughing.3 -

Fuck Apple sideways! (Wait for it, the original part begins)
HOW can a company that keeps on boasting about UX, to the point that last WDC they took more time speaking about a fucking kaleidoscope animation for their watch then about the whole changes to their MacBook's hardware, even consider putting that turd of a remote on market.
If you have an Apple Store in reach, I invite you to get up, flush, and go there. Try that atrocity that is the AppleTV, and laugh at how incredibly bad it is. Then do your best to refrain from burning the place down in your inevitable rage, that might cause you legal issues.
The previous AppleTV was fine, it was practically useless, but usable. But for some reason they decided a touchpad with low precision and no gestures was a good idea to put on a remote to a thing that will, due to its target audience, most likely be plugged into a fancy TV that has a 300ms lag due to fancy image processing. That thing gives no feedback, appart from visual, has so little precision that in a movie, the smallest step I've achieved was 5 fucking minutes, while being really fucking careful not to spoil the movie.7 -
I am having fun building a captured wifi portal. It shows up as "Virus Distribution Point" as an open AP. If you connect to the AP it brings up a page that looks like the picture.
It does nothing except show the page. The page will eventually do some limited javascript animation to make it look like it is doing something.
Right now it is an embedded webpage. Strings in a source file. Eventually I would like to turn this into a product of sorts that would make it easy for someone to use for advertising/pranks. So I expect I will need to create some sort of simple toolset for updating the pages and changing the SSID and the passcode (if any).8 -
Hello, I'm now gonna rant for a bit. I'm usually not a ranty person (wait, why am I on this site again?) , but here we go. I sometimes feel misunderstood about my side projects.
I don't know about you guys, but when I program on my free time, sometimes I just want to grab a glass of wine and explore things I think bout during the day. So, during the start of my CS-education, when I started to get my programming feet a little warm, I wrote this tic-tac-toe game (as you do...), and I thought "Well I know how to play the game. Surely I can program an AI to play against". So I thought hard for an evening or two and came up with something that wasn't too shabby (I can't win).
Then another time when learned about creating GUIs we got to do simple menu based stuff with buttons and pulldown menus following a certain structure, but we also learned that positions of components can be set freely. So I thought "Well, if I can freely change the positions of components, surely I can animate stuff and if I map that to some keys I can create a real time game!". So I wrote a small platformer with two squares that ideally succeed in killing one another. After animation I started fantasising about 3D rendering, so I created a small application which creates the illusion of 3D, which was cool and all, but that got me dreaming of creating a real 3D engine. It became almost like a cause of mine; to understand how it all works and create a 3D engine from scratch.
So now I've written a 3D engine. A simple one, mind you, without all the bells and whistles, but still a 3D engine.
So, after all this rambling, what is this rant about? It's about how people react to all this. The reactions are divided. Some are impressed, mostly people who cannot program, but others are like "hm...". For example, during job interviews, when people ask me if I've done anything on the side and I mention this, people usually go like ".... hm... :| Well that's great. So mostly just done your own stuff?". Well YES! What is that supposed to mean? That I've not created shippable applications? I've explored, which I myself believe is valuable! I believe I've learned something along the way. And most importantly I've enjoyed it. Maybe I'm over interpreting this, but sometimes it feels like people don't even understand the joy in it, like it's illogical. Why create something that in the end won't create any real value?
Am I alone in this? Or perhaps, have I just written far to long and uninteresting a rant for anybody to read this far? I don't know. You tell me.13 -

Do you guys know about the Windows 10 operating system?
I highly recommend it.
It is so easy to get done whatever you want in just a few clicks or.. several.
It has a great web browser called Internet Explorer that comes pre-installed with it. If you love animations, it will even sometimes show you that beautiful loading animation for as long as it wants. If you have a habit of wasting time on the Internet, it will intelligently slow things down and become unresponsive to help you get rid of that bad habit. It's just that great.
It has a lot of great features pre-enabled for you like sending data to Microsoft to improve your experience on a personal level. The operating system cares so much about you, unlike other operating systems that represent a flightless bird.
It's so smart, it even keeps you from doing stupid things like customizing the operating system. It makes sure that you live in the given box and don't break anything. So caring, right?!
At random times, it shows you a blue screen and a sad face to remind you that life can be sad at times but you gotta keep going. It is profound.
It comes with great useless software that you absolutely don't even need! How great is that!
I use Windows 10 and I recommend that you do too.
Have a good day..20 -
Unity3D Game Dev Interview
Interviewer: What is reflection and why would you use it?
Me: Gives overview of system and how I've used it in games before.
Interviewer: Sorry that was a trick question, Reflection is really dangerous and slow. You need to go back and learn the basics.
Me: ???...
A huge portion of Unity is built upon Reflection based systems, the entire Monobehaviour base relies on it. Their events system uses it, animation and timeline. I guess their team needs to go back to the drawing board.

I was hired as JS Dev, done some projects with Angular and Node, after several months my boss told me to maintain a FUCKING PHP webapp with no documentation and shitty codebase. After he saw the results, he told me *man, you got some potential*, and he assigned me to build websites using wordpress(WTF is he thinking!). I thought that was the last time he would do something ridiculous, Yesteday he asked me if i can do Video Animation(After Effects)!!5

Fuck these stupid frustrating trends. It drives me fucking crazy. Scrolling a website and sections overlap each other, text flying in as you scroll, stuff fading in, images moving over text panels. FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!!! I want to read the content, I don't want to feel sick and confused. Clients - DO NOT SEND ME A LINK TO THIS KIND OF WORTHLESS SHIT, SAYING 'I WANT IT LIKE THIS'.
Used sparingly and intelligently, animation can add to the UX, but it rarely is.
Remember the 90's when lazy designers used the photoshop bevel and emboss filter on every fucking thing, the web was contaminated. Cunts.1 -
Okay, windows, it's cool that you're getting a dark themed explorer and overall UWP-Fluent Design improvements but...

Absolutely hate these "moving up", "stairs of success", "we are so diverse!" stock photos all over the internet.
You feel like you are being subtle, fuck no. Unless your target audience is stupid as as fuck, this photos looks dumb and over the top. And what is up with this "diversity" all over the place? don't get me wrong, I am all for diversity. But learn how to apply it properly.
"Looks like we need a picture of a student. Oh no, we need to be diverse. Add 15 kids of 15 different ethincity in the same picture to make sure we looks diverse. Phew!"
And the animations. Holy fucking shite. Why is it that a cheap website immediatly means that your website needs to have 100 different animation in the front page.
Seriously, picture rolling from here and there. Text coming out of nowhere.Everything being squeezed and rotated. God damn it!
This is another reason I fucking hate these 1 click websites and shite like that. This fucking website was created with WiX and my God, it's a fucking nightmare.
Good news is client is recreating the website.3 -
Thanks major restaurant chain. I don't want to wait the 30 seconds for your cheezy animation to finish before I get my gift card's number. I'm hungry. Know your users.4

TL;DR: My devices all hate me and I needed to fix them all.
My Devices really love me.
I rooted my smartphone (LG G5) just yesterday. Everything went fine. Installed TWRP, SuperSU and some nice Apps that utilize root.
Today I was on the go (at CeBIT) and already had the Xposed Installer App on my phone, but didn't attempt installing it yet because I needed my phone for Maps and Messaging and the app had given clear warning about the bricking-potential.
So to the end of the day I get bored, send my last important Messages, installed the Xposed Framework...
... aaaand got stuck in a boot loop.
So I got on my way back home (thanks God I remembered all the trains I needed to take). On the way I had a lot of fun in the Recovery-Terminal and figured that I should be able to fix my phone with no problem at home because the installer made backups (unlike myself).
Coming back home and my pc was still running (should've shut down after installing updates).
The pc behaved odd and I couldn't shut it down properly, which led to cutting the power.
And upon booting my pc I got a ... give it a guess ...
...a bootloop (technically the animation just never ended).
So after I fixed my phone with my spare laptop (just transferred and executed the uninstaller for xposed) I fixed my PC too, which had an old broken dkms-driver.
The odd thing about this is, that this isn't technically a rant. I guess you can confirm that you can't find any swear words.
Because I ENJOYED fixing the devices. I already fixed my pc a couple of times was well as unbricking my rooted phones, so there was fairly little research involved.
I guess I'm now offically twisted.
Now, after my smartphone backups are transferred, I'Ll take my device apart and replace the camera glass which arrived today (and hope, no pray, that my sim card does still work after that)...
... after I blatendly copied a meme to get more attention. 😉2 -

For other just beginning web devs: spending hours fiddling over a bunch of CSS layout/formatting/animation to make a small widget look just right... Then showing someone your 500ms animation and they say "yeah and....???"1

Static HTML pages are better than "web apps".
Static HTML pages are more lightweight and destroy "web apps" in performance, and also have superior compatibility. I see pretty much no benefit in a "web app" over a static HTML page. "Web apps" appear like an overhyped trend that is empty inside.
During my web browsing experience, static HTML pages have consistently loaded faster and more reliably, since the browser is immediately served with content useful for consumption, whereas on JavaScript-based web "apps", the useful content comes in **last**, after the browser has worked its way through a pile of script.
For example, an average-sized Wikipedia article (30 KB wikitext) appears on screen in roughly two seconds, since MediaWiki uses static HTML. Everipedia, in comparison, is a ReactJS app. Guess how long that one needs. Upwards of three times as long!
Making a page JavaScript-based also makes it fragile. If an exception occurs in the JavaScript, the user might end up with a blank page or an endless splash screen, whereas static HTML-based pages still show useful content.
The legacy (2014-2020) HTML-based Twitter.com loaded a user profile in under four seconds. The new react-based web app not only takes twice as long, but sometimes fails to load at all, showing the error "Oops something went wrong! But don't fret – it's not your fault." to be displayed. This could not happen on a static HTML page.
The new JavaScript-based "polymer" YouTube front end that is default since August 2017 also loads slower. While the earlier HTML-based one was already playing the video, the new one has just reached its oh-so-fancy skeleton screen.
It would once have been unthinkable to have a website that does not work at all without JavaScript, but now, pretty much all popular social media sites are JavaScript-dependent. The last time one could view Twitter without JavaScript and tweet from devices with non-sophisticated browsers like Nintendo 3DS was December 2020, when they got rid of the lightweight "M2" mobile website.
Sometimes, web developers break a site in older browser versions by using a JavaScript feature that they do not support, or using a dependency (like Plyr.js) that breaks the site. Static HTML is immune against this failure.
Static HTML pages also let users maximize speed and battery life by deactivating JavaScript. This obviously will disable more sophisticated site features, but the core part, the text, is ready for consumption.
Not to mention, single-page sites and fancy animations can be implemented with JavaScript on top of static HTML, as GitHub.com and the 2018 Reddit redesign do, and Twitter's 2014-2020 desktop front end did.
From the beginning, JavaScript was intended as a tool to complement, not to replace HTML and CSS. It appears to me that the sole "benefit" of having a "web app" is that it appears slightly more "modern" and distinguished from classic web sites due to use of splash screens and lack of the browser's loading animation when navigating, while having oh-so-fancy loading animations and skeleton screens inside the website. Sorry, I prefer seeing content quickly over the app-like appearance of fancy loading screens.
Arguably, another supposed benefit of "web apps" is that there is no blank page when navigating between pages, but in pretty much all major browsers of the last five years, the last page observably remains on screen until the next navigated page is rendered sufficiently for viewing. This is also known as "paint holding".
On any site, whenever I am greeted with content, I feel pleased. Whenever I am greeted with a loading animation, splash screen, or skeleton screen, be it ever so fancy (e.g. fading in an out, moving gradient waves), I think "do they really believe they make me like their site more due to their fancy loading screens?! I am not here for the loading screens!".
To make a page dependent on JavaScript and sacrifice lots of performance for a slight visual benefit does not seem worthed it.
Quote:
> "Yeah, but I'm building a webapp, not a website" - I hear this a lot and it isn't an excuse. I challenge you to define the difference between a webapp and a website that isn't just a vague list of best practices that "apps" are for some reason allowed to disregard. Jeremy Keith makes this point brilliantly.
>
> For example, is Wikipedia an app? What about when I edit an article? What about when I search for an article?
>
> Whether you label your web page as a "site", "app", "microsite", whatever, it doesn't make it exempt from accessibility, performance, browser support and so on.
>
> If you need to excuse yourself from progressive enhancement, you need a better excuse.

"Nice, you added a loqding animation, but why does that content take so long to load?"
Because the animation is the content 😂😂😂 -
Friend: why do you hate react so much ?
Me: Because web development should be all about browser compatibility ( yeah even for that shitty ie8 ) and usability not spa and shitty made animation that breaks when you switch from landscape to portrait .
Friend: then why do you use it ?
Me: money. -
Finnegan by @retoor has received 16 points for Presentation and 12 points for Functionality (28 total) during the voting phase. And with this, I call it the Winning devRant clone 2023!
She will get an SVG with her likeness and layered sliding animation made by yours truly, which is a potentially perfect trophy for her portfolio. Hope you'll like it, @retoor, so give me a time and it will arrive!
ragedev by @SidTheITGuy has received 6 points for Presentation and 3 points for Functionality (9 total). As such, he will only receive a static SVG portrait. But it's still a good addition to his YouTube channel, I believe!
@ostream with others get a certificate for participation. I don't really know why I'm issuing those, but please accept! It's the least I can do for your all's contributions. Come by the next "jam" announcement, I promise it will be more exciting ;)))

Before going home, decided to do an upgrade from ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04...
Leave it to do its charm.
*a morning later*
See laptop on off state, "hmm..."
Turning in on, *press power buton*
Booting... Purple-ish screen appear.. Nothing happened for 20 minutes.
"fck."
Hard reboot, going to grub menu,
1. Ubuntu*
2. Advance option
Choose ubuntu.
Booting...
"root mount not found, bla bla bla
Kernel panic..."
"fck."
15 chrome tabs later (on mobile),
Do something on shit...
Finally proceed to login screen.
Insert password, enter.
Loading... Blank... 3 seconds later, tadaaa.. Going back to login screen.
Do it trice, I'm stuck at login screen.
"fck."
20 chrome tabs later,
Finally got in. Have a "what's new" screen.
Ok, feels different... But its slow af. Hmm maybe reboot will do something.
Rebooting...
Login screen, insert password, enter..
3 seconds later..
Bam. Going back to login screen...
"fck."
Another chrome tabs later... Resolved the issue.
And finally I can take a breath, but still has a headache because of little thing likes:
1. Right click not working
2. Workspace not work as expected likes in 16.04
3. Screenshot behavior
4. No animation When moving a window to another workspace.
When almost anything is solved and I'm ready to do my works, I just realised something..
I just wasted 4 hours of my workday.

"Not wk135, but blah blah blah"
Please don't misuse wk135 (Sorry)
It's about coding tests
Thank you. */

A company took their technical test on this really weird website. There was a Windows Narrator guy's voice giving instructions while a timer was running. I had to flash my ID to the webcam and then fit my head on an outline on the screen. It was for a web dev position. I had to speak into the microphone to answer the Narrator's questions and then send the video to them. The questions were weird and hypothetical, mostly. I just thought that their process was dumb and unnecessary.
=>
I don't like aptitude and algebraic tests. One company, I remember, had their test on Google Forms. For some multiple choice questions, they put check boxes instead of radio buttons. So, I could just blaze through it selecting all options. Some of the questions had their first option as "All of the above" 🤔. Fortunately, I didn't pass the test.
=>
The company I'm interning with, starting from next month, had a good interview process. They asked me questions on JavaScript, CSS, and a few on algorithms and data structures. I was also given a task where I had to make a css animation of trees. I'm glad they didn't have an algebra entry test.

Pull-to-refresh is useless.
If you are a mobile app developer, please get rid of pull-to-refresh. Your users will thank you.
I have the impression that mobile app developers choose to implement the pull-to-refresh gimmick just in order to make their app comply with a design trend. It seems like a desperate attempt to appear "modern" and "fancy", not because of the actual usefulness of the gesture.
Pull-to-refresh is one of those things that are well-intended but backfire. It appears helpful on first sight, but turns out to be a burden.
It takes effort and cognitive strain to avoid triggering a pull-to-refresh. The user can't use the app relaxed but has to walk on eggshells.
Every unwanted refresh wastes battery power, mobile data (if it is an Internet-connected app), and can lead to the loss of form data.
To avoid pull-to-refresh, the user has to resort to finger gymnastics like a shorter swipe for scrolling up or swiping slightly up before down. Pull-to-refresh could even be triggered while pinch-zooming in or out near the top of a page, if the touchscreen does not recognize one of the two fingers.
Pull-to-refresh also interferes with the double-tap-swipe zoom gesture. If one of the two taps are not recognized, a swipe-down to zoom in can trigger a pull-to-refresh instead.
To argue "if you don't like pull-to-refresh, just don't use it" is like blaming a person who stepped on a mine, since the person moved and the mine was stationary.
A refresh button can be half a second away in the menu bar, URL bar, or a submenu, where it is unlikely to be pressed accidentally. There is no need for a gesture that does more harm than good.
Using a mobile app with pull-to-refresh feels like having Windows StickyKeys forcibly enabled at all times. The refresh circle animation sticks to the finger.
If the user actually wants to refresh, pull-to-refresh is slower than a refresh button in a menu if the page is not at the top, meaning pull-to-refresh is useless as a shortcut anyway if the page is in any other position than the top.
An alternative to pull-to-refresh is pull-for-details. Samsung did it in some of their apps. Pulling down against the top reveals additional information such as the count and total size of selected items.
If you own a website, add this CSS to make browsing your website on the pre-installed Android web browser not a headache:
html,body { overscroll-behavior: none; }
Why is this necessary? In 2019, Google took the ability to deactivate the pull-to-refresh gesture on their Chrome browser for Android OS away from users. On Chrome for Android, pull-to-refresh can only be disabled on the server side, not the user side. The avalanche of complaints? Neglected.
Good thing several third-party browsers let the user turn off this severe headache.12 -

"Non-devs never call Steven Spielberg to have their TVs fixed."
But sure they MUST call a dev to update their Android, iPhone, Windows, installation of Anti-virus, data recovery, malware removal, to shortlist 20 laptops from market, ask for what printer to buy, why is there a weird animation in Android sometimes, come borrow my WiFi, have their phones and computers fixed, RIP old audio CDs (yes!), fix Bluray, fix anything electronic, repair their bike, teach them science, politics...
This While True loop never escape.1 -
Today I got more praise for adding a spinning animation while loading page than the 5 months of complex coding I've done so far.
Users are simple, look shiny, ignore that nothing works.1 -

Window 11 dev preview
- really liked the animation. It feels smooth.
- settings got rearrange like android settings and kind of make more sense than windows 10
- gaming performance is same as windows 10
- after disabling the online results in search, it's far better and speedy comapre to windows 1019 -
Few years ago as a junior android dev with couple years of self taught experience of working in startups I submitted a simple android app assignment for a junior android dev role. Assignment had only like 8 requirements so I followed them to the letter. That didn't end well.
App was simple just 3 screens. Login screen with username and password input fields, login button.
Had to call a login endpoint after login button was clicked, redirecting to home screen, calling items endpoint, displaying a list of items and when an item was clicked passing item data and redirect to item details screen.
Needless to say big swinging dick senior was not impressed. UI was not perfect, I forgot to display a loading animation when fetching data, didnt handle back button properly.
I agreed with some points but other comments were clearly just nitpicking: his preferred variable naming conventions, his opinions on architecture that was not up to his standard (official google arch at the time was not up to his standard).
He also was mad that app wasn't prepared for release to googleplay (another out of the ass requirement). Like I would prepare a 3 screen app for prod release that he will forget ever existed after 20min of his review.
Lots more of nitpicking, encapsulation this encapsulation that, omg now hes shocked that there are a few warnings after the project is built.
Regardless my self confidence was destroyed at that point and after few more negative experiences I dropped android dev alltogether for a couple years and switched to game dev.
After game dev ran its course I went back to android dev and found a supportive place where I could grow.
Looking back, they were actually hiring atleast a mid level for a junior position but I was grilled as a senior. The guy literally didnt wrote any single positive thing in that review about my code even tho my senior peers said my project was decent back then, its just that I didnt handle a few edge cases and that's all.
I looked up the guy in linkedin, turns out hes a uni dropout who posts all books that he red about software dev in his education section of his linkedin profile. Found a bunch of other narcissistic stuff on his profile. Guy was a fucking idiot. Even if I worked under him it would have probably sucked.
Learned some important lessons I guess. Always get a second, 3rd and 4th opinion and dont take criticism too seriously. Always check what kind of person is providing feedback.4 -
Me: Codes a really cool website animation in javascript for 2 days.

Big win today. Set up a custom motion capture pipeline for Unity using my Vive/controllers today. Quote a bit of scripting but I went from nothing to complete animation reel for our character model in a single day.
Successful day for once. I can sleep well tonight.2 -
Oh God.
So I'm working on something and I needed to see how it looks when you type a command into the terminal (like the animation).
Quickly Google "Kali linux terminal," since it's kinda where I'm getting some of the design from.
First video "Kali Linux basic commands (every ethical hacker must know in 2018)"
1st command: whoami
2nd command: date
3rd command: pwd
4th command: cd
5th command: ls
I'd say that's a wee bit basic there and those are commands that literally anyone who touches linux should know, dontcha think there pal?
Nice job using buzz words to try and get views on your "tutorial"4 -
I just spent the last 4 hours lip-syncing audio to an animation.
I forget why i was doing that in the first place...1 -
My most intense day was in the company at the day we had to publish a website containing lots of jQuery & CSS animated stuff.
We planned to go live at 3pm but due to the fact that before lunch time there began to appear more and more styling and animation problems, we went live at around 9pm. I was sweating and nervous as hell the whole time.
At least my boss and I went to drink a few beers right after that. ;) -
Material Design on the web was not a good experience in my personal opinion. I see these spaces around the boxes that are too huge. The faded underlined input boxes are confusing, too. I'd rather prefer seeing a border all around the input box or something of similar representation than an underline with a distracting animation. Many also fail at placing the buttons with a transparent background on the right spot. I'd still prefer Semantic UI or something clean on my upcoming projects. To me, Material Design is really good for mobile interfaces though.5

I'm quite a vengeful person, I'm sure I get the wrong end of the stick sometimes to.
In the last few years of my life I've been trying to not act and "be mature" about the situation.
There's still times I fall of the wagon but generally I have shrugged it off...
But do you know how I feel like now!? That I've been walked all over people are taking me for granted. People think they can get away with lying and messing me about.
Quite honestly I don't know how to act your always meant to rise above the situation. When all I can think of is how I could fuck up the thing they did.
And people go well just protect yourself but that means I'm not open and honest myself and that's what I fucking hate to begin with!
Today I'm feeling vengeful because a client didn't pay until the last second. They wanted the website for next to nothing. And took a year to pay. Now they have gone and paid a tonne on a new site ! Because they went well what you did was shit "effectively"
Granted it was but you don't spend a few hundred quid and expect to get everything. I gave them what they paid for.
Everyone is expecting something for nothing 🙄 I get that's just the life of companies directors
But it pisses me off I try to do everything truthfully on the up an up and they would prefer a group of liars
Oh front page of Google yes we can do that for free
Oh yes the greatest animation look!
😤 And I'm meant to sit here and be like yeah that's cool. I mean at this point what reason do I have to be open and honest if shit stains like that exist!
What pisses me off more is that I'm trying to rise above. I don't think I should I think I should ruin their fucking day and be done with it. I have the capabilities.... But I know "it ain't legal"
Then people go on about well if you don't like the rules help them get changed ...
I've tried the political route they are all far worse 😐 they are ignorant cunts. That's the truth! I can't stand to be around half of them 🙄
So here I am ranting to not fuck up someone's day , trying to rise above 😔 -
can we all take a moment to appreciate the developers of flutter. they're smart, and they took the time to make flutter the *right* way.
they used an easy to learn language that's ideal for mobile development, which means hot reload/restart is possible (because dart supports aot and jit compilation)
the way it's designed is beautiful. everything is a widget, and it's easy to customize them via named parameters.
the community is great. it's not large, but it's supportive, with two active subreddits. yesterday i asked a question on r/flutterdev, and a member of the flutter team at google answered the question with a comprehensive answer.
flutter is very consistent across platforms. if it works on android or ios, you can bet it'll work on the other just as well, with the exception of platform-specific code.
it is VERY performant. unless you write a major bottleneck, 60fps is easy to achieve.
animations are EASY. define a tween and animation controller and then write a callback function. not to mention it's straightforward, and complex/combined animations are easy, too.
you can get almost direct access to the canvas, should you need it, with custompainter.
oh my god, this is revolutionary in the programming world. development is quicker than it is with native android alone, and for people who have no access to a mac, like me, i can develop for ios and compile via code magic. if you haven't checked it out and you develop for mobile, check it out.
oh yeah, did i mention it's not just mobile. hummingbird - flutter compiled to web - is already in experimental public betas, and will likely be released by the end of the year. there's also experimental desktop support, which is amazing, and much better than electron. not to mention flutter is the future, as it will be the primary way to make apps on fuchsia os.13 -
So apparently Firefox can't handle (quick) animations from opacity 0 to opacity greater-than-zero and glitches around. Instead you need to animate starting from something greater than 0, like 0.001.
I had to debug this shit and it just adds to my reasons to dislike this browser.5 -

I'm a .Net developer from Morocco, i'm currently working on an accounting software for this fucking company owned by an American boss. And i'm handling every single aspect of the project including the back-end (C#), Database (Sql Server), Reports (crystal reports, ABAP, VSTO), and design (UI, logos, animation...). For a salary of 300 USD/month, with no insurance, no transportation fees, and no fuck given about my health or my coworkers'. Not mentioning the shitty working hours and condition.
This is my first (job)9 -
Most web developers don't seem to care at all about ecological footprint and UX/UI impact on people and society, like they never cared about accessibility either, desperately dreaming to work for the Californian oligopoly companies that shaped our current digital infrastructure.
Meanwhile, rivers run dry, forest are burning, people starving and soldiers killing people.
But politics is taboo, even on devrant. Let's post a funny thank-God(?!)-it's-Friday GIF animation instead!?
What kind of people do we want to be?14 -
To that nasty animation bug I’m dealing with for a week already...
I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don't have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for bugs like you. If you let my project go now that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.3 -
I'm not here to underestimate the design of a government app on Android.
I hope the developer considered the UI itself as user-friendly and not the default button from android studio. he just simply copies the contents(text & images) from the government web page and paste it to its application.
He/she got paid well to make that app. well, although the information is correct for the users.
It's not much that users are even enthusiastic of the design. they simply read the guidelines inside the app and no more fancy animation.1 -
Does anybudy still use Adobe Animate/Flash for web animations?
They teach it at my school and at the moment I see no reason to use it. I'm probaly faster writing it by hand in CSS / JS, and it will run smoother that the animate files...6 -

I've had a Xiaomi Mi 8 for a few months now. Although I'm impressed by what I got for the amount I paid (a phone that cost about $250 for 6GB RAM, Snapdragon 845, Android 9 and premium build quality is quite a steal), it definitely comes with a consequence.
MIUI (specifically MIUI 11) is godawful. It is single-handedly the worst Android ROM I've ever used since my shitty Android 2.2 phone back around 2010. If you're gonna buy a Xiaomi phone, plan to install Lineage OS on it (but even that's a pain which I'll explain why later).
- Navigation buttons don't hide while watching a video.
Why? God only knows. The ONLY way to bypass without root this is to use its garbage fullscreen mode with gestures, which is annoying as all hell.
- 2 app info pages?
Yeah, the first one you can access just by going to its disaster of a settings app, apps, manage apps and tap on any one.
The 2nd one you can access through the app info button in any 3rd party launcher. Try this: Download Nova launcher, go to the app drawer, hold on any app and tap "app info", and you'll see the 2nd one.
Basically, instead of modifying Android's FOSS source code, they made a shitty overlay. These people are really ahead of their time.
- Can only set lock screen wallpapers using the stock Gallery app
It's not that big an issue, until it is, when whatever wallpaper app you're using only allows you to set the wallpaper and not download them. I think this is both a fuckup on Xiaomi and (insert wallpaper app name here), but why Xiaomi can't include this basic essential feature that every other Android ROM ever made has is beyond me.
- Theming on MIUI 11 is broken
Why do they even bother having a section to customize the boot animation and status bar when there's not one goddamn theme that supports it? At this point you're only changing the wallpaper and icon pack which you can do on any Android phone ever. Why even bother?
They really, REALLY want to be Apple.
Just look at their phones. They're well designed and got good specs, but they don't even care anymore about being original. The notch and lack of a headphone jack aren't features, they're tremendous fuckups by the dead rotting horse known as Apple that died when Steve Jobs did.
Xiaomi tries to build a walled garden around an inherently customizable OS, and the end result is a warzone of an Android ROM that begs for mercy from its creator. Launchers integrate horribly (Does any power user actually use anything that isn't Nova or Microsoft launcher?), 3rd party themes and customization apps need workarounds, some apps don't work at all. People buy from Xiaomi to get a high end budget Android phone at the price of some ads and data collection, not a shitter iOS wannabe.
They really, REALLY want you to have a sim card
If you don't have a sim card and you're using your phone for dev stuff, you're a 2nd class citizen to Xiaomi. Without one, you can't:
- Install adb through adb
- Write to secure settings
- Unlock your bootloader and get away from this trash Android ROM
What's the point? Are they gonna shadow ban you? Does anyone contact them to unlock their bootloader saying "yeah I wanna use a custom rom to pirate lizard porn and buy drugs"? They made this 1000000000x harder than it needs to be for no reason whatsoever. Oh yeah and you gotta wait like a week or something for them to unlock it. How they fucked up this bad is beyond me.
So yeah. Xiaomi. Great phones, atrocious OS.11 -

!Dev related but still freelance.
So.. I do 3D stuff, scenes, animation and so on. The e-sport pub manager I know told me about this guy that wanted to start a local organizations around FIFA, hold tournaments at the pub and so on. He had some finance, contacts and needed a 3D scene of a stadium to highlight top placers as 3D Fifa cards.
Gotcha, so I hooked him up with said stuff, he was happy, manager was happy, first tournament went well. Now to the shit show:
He wrote to me a couple of days later asking if I'm up for more jobs, which k respectfully declined because l was on a bigger project that took about 2months to complete. Since that day, he spammed both me and the pub manager with request and wishes on wanting to do more.. and I mean SPAM!
Like the dude can't take a no, sorry. He tried to call on phone and messenger, messeged me several times / week and asked the manager of he heard from me.
Both the manager and I were perplexed of his attitude and after asking several times to stop and we both had other things for now (events / projects).. he.. he didn't stop. So.. blocked and that's that, right? Fuck now.. other clients of mine asked me if I knew of him because he tried to contact them to get to me.. like WTF?! How hard is it to take a no and move on?! Jesus.. client of hell in a nutshell2 -
There are few things that annoy me more than an app with unneeded transition animations between menus. An example of this would be the Xbox app on Android. Whenever you navigate to a new menu, it always has a stupid slow fade-in animation. Why do we need an animation every time we switch between menus?! It adds that much more time before we can actually use that section of the app, just because we need to wait for this stupid unneeded animation to run. It's like whoever wrote the app was browsing a generic animation library and discovered the fade-in animation, and thought to themselves "Woah this is so cool, it'll make the app go whooooooosh every time they change menus, they're gonna be so impressed!!"3

This basically is me rambling all my thoughts that have been clouding my mind.
Learning other programming languages after learning the first is harder than I expected. I learned python first but that's making learning others (which I know arent similar but ) C, ES6, PHP, etc. I need to figure out what makes each one special and get a proper path instead of learning them all the same way. Which is easier for the web dev languages but fuck man I just need a good path for them and I'm good. Like learn this this this this that and that and I've got a basic understanding of the language I dont need to stress and I can casually build my knowledge from here now that I understand all this. Cause I love programming and I want to be the best I can be and just get to the level I am with python. And at some point I have to learn about basic electronics and learning how to program Arduinos with C so I can do stuff with that because I really really REALLY want to.
It doesnt stop there. I want to learn another language and no I'm not talkin bout programming anymore I mean I wanna learn Japanese and German (but japanese primarily) but it doesnt help that I'm always either in school, studying, programming, or playing games. I just cant find time to practice Hiragana&Katakana (two basic writing systems in japan) and it doesnt help that I'm a lazy procrastinating piece of shit that doesnt have or can keep a proper schedule and hell I barely can English and Its my native tongue. Ugh. Itd be better if I had a native speaker to help me tbh.
And finally I want to learn basic pixel animating I have dreamed as a kid to do some kind of animation and programming and I want to do both for games I want to program for fun but it doesnt help that I cant draw sprites or anything for shit. I cant get it and I just am fucked but I'm going to ask some people I know and a few subreddits for advice/help/resources with that

Animation/VFX/3D modeling and rendering.
I did this for a year and had a lot of fun, but felt engineering was a better fit professionally. -
So our company wants us to start learning/sharpening our Python skills for work. We signed up for CodeWars and ran through our first Kata today. I'm excited to learn, but I don't have any actual experience with anything but HTML/CSS and super basic JS for just things like animation... I feel like such a fucking moron trying to work through this Kata. Because our manager wanted us to only spend like 15-20 minutes on it. I spent over 4 hours trying to figure out the right place to even start, even with reading documentation and trying to find similar examples online and after 4 headsmashingly long hours I couldn't even get an idea of how to tackle the problem.
Watching python videos to try and figure this out...15 -
My dad was a young guy, and I like animation like young kid...
I found my dad's hentai porn on his computer. Sorry dad.2 -
Client: hey, we need to do a simple animation for every main category on the page
Developer: ok... I'll need to know what kind of animation you want.
Client: (sent over a video)

the more i learn about web dev, the more i realise the reason for its mess up . There are 2 major problems in it : the people who create various important concepts and tools for web dev were 1) working on it without any collaboration and agreements on the philosophy and 2) were too stubborn on their ideology i guess.
There is no limitation to anything's functionalities, and the limits that are "defined" are badshit crazy. for eg:
====================================
HTML creator : "I am gonna make a language that would provide a skeleton to web page. it will just have the text and basic markers to let the scripting and styling engines/languages know which text is supposed to be rendered and how.
It won't provide any click or loading functionality.
someone: "So i guess opening a page or loading an image would be handled by JS or other programming language? also, bold , italic or division would be added via CSS?"
HTMLguy : Nah, my html engine would ALSO do that.
someone : what , why? won't that just be stupid and against your philosophy?
HTMLguy : WHAT? am too awesome, can't hear you
w3c , 50 yrs later : sorry can't change this, gotta support the 50 yrs of web dev and billion sites
=================================
CSS guy: I am gonna make the world's best beautifying stylesheet language to provide colors, styling, fonts and backgrounds to a page. every loadings and clicks would be handled somewhere else
Some1: cool, then clicks, hover and running of animation would be handled by JS only
CSSguy :Umm, i guess i could handle those.
Some1 wha-?
CSSguy : Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou for the nobel price!
====================================
JS guy : I am gonna make a god web programming language! It can do everything: add/remove html tags, add styling, control animations, control browser, handle clicks , perform operations, everything!
some1: cool! you must be making very large programming language with lots of modules.
JS guy: No! i am gonna keep it small. no built in classes and file imports! just use the functions directly. if someone wants the additional lib functionality, install them on your server
some1 : innovative! what's typeof NaN ?
JSguy :shut up.6 -
I was designing and building a portfolio page for a photographer. He mostly does black & white portraits with either a white or black background so I had the idea of splitting the page into a light and dark side (Star Wars joke definitely intentional).
I worked waaay too long on a *diagonal* CSS wipe animation when the user switches sides and I was quite proud of it.
Half a year later we realize that basically no one has noticed the switch button. Analytics confirmed it was less than 4% of visitors. 🤦♂️3 -

Gna gna gna Chrome you stupid sucker!
I have some objects that I animate using JS triggered CSS translate with a transition duration. Why on earth would Chrome think it's a good idea to apply that duration also after the animation when I zoom the whole page?!
OK, slap a transition end handler on the object and reset the transition duration when the animation is done. But FF doesn't have that problem in the first place, and even IE works as intended!5 -
I fucking hate css. This animation is a fucking dirty hack on top of a dirty hack on top of a selector that looks like regex that only works in chrome

Unreal engine adventures part 3:
Code compiles. Everything is fine. Close engine and open it up again since I'm coding a anim graph node and it does not update it unless you restart it.
Unreal crashes...
...
Why the f. Like even if one node is buggy than glag it red and stop execution of it. Why does the entire engine decide not to start instead? That's utter bullshit! And all this because of an array out of bounds? Really? And this thing is supposed to be professional? Come on...6 -

When someone put up a suggestion with the words 'GIF animation' and 'Actionscript' in the same sentence, I felt something in me just died. Along with whatever interest I have in this dev meeting.2

!rant - Also sorry this got rather long.
This is actually a psoitive story. I always used to be someone working on his things alone. It was great, I got shit done, I learned something. No one stressing you. But I was also lonely. The thing is that this behavior not only applied to developing. I was also able to observer that behavior in other parts of my life.
So it was time for a change. And I made a change.
It all began by switching my field of studies. Well, not really the field but some details. I switched from plain old computer science to computer science combined with media design. Here in Germany we have a nice word for it. Mediendesigninformatik.
I wish I had made that change earlier. Nonetheless it's never too late to make a change. So I began going to creative courses, like animation or graphic design. Directly from the start I made sure to talk to people. Make them remember me, offered my help because I already had experience with some things etc.
Next up was to get a job. So I got one. Now I'm working as a Game Master for a branding of escape rooms. Fun job. Also something different from developing all day, which is quite nice to do sometimes.
This job is where my change begun. The people there are amazing. I felt instantly like I've found new friends. Actually I also developed a crush on someone there and we are possibly dating soon. Not quite sure about that yet though. That also isn't the point here.
So a month later I moved out of my parents house. Living together with friends now and it's great. I'm so much more creative, so much more shit happens. I feel like a different human.
So I continued working on myself. I wanted to get really good at it. I wanted my groups to succeed whole having a challenge. They were supposed to leave happily, even when they didn't make it. Of course not everyone can be satisfied, but I noticed a positive change. Which motivated me to redesign and rethink the tool we use to give the players hints, manage their time and other stuff.
I was scared at first, but eventually I showed them what I did. Their feedback was surprisingly positive and while it will perhaps never replace our actual tools because our chef is a cheapskate, I was happy to achieve something. This continued. I made more stuff and formed connections.
Now I'm not working on things alone anymore. Recently I started working together with someone and this also was the first time I've made actual money of it. It's not a lot, but I was able to live half a month of it.
This is the beginning and I hope there will be much more. The moment I started showing other people my work and feeling confident about it made me change. I also learned to appreciate other people's compliments and kind of get an high of them, but I'm not sad when they don't like it. I feel like I've grown as a human and are more mature.
Have you experienced something similar? Can't wait to read your stories.3 -
v0.0005a (alpha)
- class support added to lua thanks to yonaba.
- rkUIs class created
- new panel class
- added drawing code for panel
- fixed bug where some sides of the UI's border were failing to drawing (line rendering quark)
v0.0014a (alpha) 11.30.2023 (~2 hours)
- successfully retrieving basic data from save folder, load text into lua from files
- added 'props' property to Entity class
- added a props table to control what gets serialized and what doesn't
- added a save() base method for instances (has to be overridden to be useful beyond the basics)
- moved the lume.serialize() call into the :save() method on the base entity class itself
- serialized and successfully saved an entities property table.
- fixed deserializion bugs involving wrong indexes (savedata[1] not savedata[2])
- moved deserialization from temp code, into line loading loop itself (assuming each item is on one line)
- deser'd test data, and init()'d new player Entity using the freshly-loaded data, and displayed the entity sprite
All in all not a bad session. Understanding filing handling and how to interact with the directory system was the biggest hurdle I was worried about for building my tools.
Next steps will be defining some basic UI elements (with overridable draw code), and then loading and initializing the UI from lua or json.
New projects can be set as subfolders folders in appdata, using 'Setidentity("appname/projectname") to keep things clean.
I'm not even dreading writing basic syntax highlighting!
Idea is to dogfood the whole process. UI is in-engine rendered just like you might see with godot, unity, or gamemaker, that way I have maximum flexibility to style it the way I want. I'm familiar enough with constructing from polygons, on top of stenciling, on top of nine-slicing, on top of existing tweening and special effects, that I can achieve exactly what I want.
Idea is to build a really well managed asset pipeline. Stencyl, as 'crappy' as it appeared, and 'for education' was a master class in how to do things the correct way, it was just horribly bloated while doing it.
Logical tilesets that you import, can rearrange through drag-n-drop, assign custom tile shapes to, physics materials, collisions groups, name, add tag data to, all in one editor? Yes please.
Every other 2D editor is basic-bitch, has you importing images, and at most generates different scales and does the slicing for you.
Code editor? Everything behavior was in a component, with custom fields. All your code goes into a list of events, which you can toggle on and off with a proper toggle button, so you can explicitly experiment, instead of commenting shit out (yes git is better, but we're talking solo amateurs here, they're not gonna be using git out the gate unless they already know what they're doing).
Components all have an image assignable to identify them, along with a description field, and they're arranged in a 2d grid for easy browsing, copying, modifying.
The physics shape editor, the animation editor, the map editor, all of it was so bare bones and yet had things others didn't.
I want that, except without the historic ties to flash, without the overhead of java, and with sexier fucking in-engine rendering of the UI and support for modding and in-engine custom tools.
Not really doing it for anyone except myself, and doubt I'll get very far, but since I dropped looking for easy solutions, I've just been powering through all the areas I don't understand and doing the work.
I rediscovered my love of programming after 3-4 years of learning to hate it, and things are looking up.2 -
I am a frontend dev but please don’t trust me 100% with responsive, works in every browser, animation heavy, top of the line, UIs.
Also I don’t know how to work with Wordpress.
Also don’t ask me questions about Webpack, Node, or anything related to builds/configs. (I will be happy to google search my answers for you tho)
But I am a frontend dev.5 -
If I was to talk about software, the act of coding is probably the most boring part. But birthing a program can pull from magic, animation, circus, gardening, parenting, woodwork, and a host of arts, trades, and crafts. It is a wonderful creative task that is being sold short by brilliant jerks, one trick fools, and con men.2

I was developing a project for the software engineering course. We we're building a sort of mips instructions simulator that would show you the path the signal takes while it's traveling in the CPU.
So after almost finishing everything, the professor asks us to add a voice over feature that would tell you what is happening while you go through the animation.
You can only understand this if you see it. It's very funny and stupid.
The website is http://mipssimulator.com
Make sure sound is on.
Edit: the site is kinda glitchy on mobile so try loading it on a computer for better results.5 -
I have made a lot of small changes in my app like minor bug fixes, Animation, optimizations, better database management, new options, overall interface improvements, ... to give the application a better overall appearance. Then I decide to show it to my Client.

So I've forgot to share with all of ya our first !!!SUCCESSFUL!!! GGJ Game!
Its called "Communism Overload" and its super hardcore.
LINK: https://goo.gl/b2t9A8
Things you should know:
1. Its 2 players ONLY(You wont win alone)
2. You will break your keyboard
3. Only handful of ppl have successfully finished it.
4. There was one guy that managed to finish it alone and it took him a lot of time to master the skill of sync keyboard breaking!
5. Some ppl say that the instructions are unclear and they manage to stick their heads in toilets, so I'm attaching a small GIF of explanation.
6. This game gave us a new meaning in life, so its surely, not the last one.
7. Everything in this game, except for the music is my teams hard work. Every image\animation\line of code.
8. Me and my teammates would be freaking glad to hear you thoughts on this game (MADE IN JUST 48 HOURS)2 -
Chrome has failed me. At least, I was disappointed.
So, I have been working with an animation studio to make some changes to their Website, typical WordPress website.
Nothing wrong there, I have a copy of their WP site running on a localhost so I can make changes & tests before pushing to bitbucket (then to be deployed). Now, a lot of the changes I have been making are minor css, html & js changes. Mostly FrontEnd changes.
The frustration came when working on a couple JS sheets; I would change some CSS and JS, save the files then go over to Chrome to test them out.
Open the localhost and test the changes, CSS changes worked! Looks good, but for what ever reason the JS functionality would not change. 2 ish hours of frustration, seeing only half of these changes working I decide to step out for a coffee break. Then I remembered; Chrome has a nasty habit of caching files it has used before for later use. Turns out it was using some older versions of the files that it had cached.
Thankfully I remembered this; only ended up being 2 hours of frustration. For anyone else using Chrome for development; keep this in mind.1 -
Not sure if any of you guys are Windows Insiders (I know the audience here is Linux fanboys and plus, there's not much reason to be an insider in 2021, really), but I am. I'm on build 21286 and for whatever reason... they have decided to SLOW down the animation for opening a new window. I'm too lazy to record it, but the animation is just like it was before: your window scales from like 80% size to 100% size... but it takes legit about half a second now when before I would say it was closer to maybe a tenth of a second.
Strange choice... and I do not think it improves the experience...4 -
How do you guy (think of) prototype UI?
I have used the pen and paper approach but when you add the interactions such as clicks and animation on the paper,it become messy.
I feel that coding up a full blown front end for prototyping is overkill. Because when you want to prototype the list , you also need to insert the dummy data in order for you see probably clicks and drag animation.11 -
Coworker: "Hey, I have an idea. I think it will be much better if, one month before launch, we pivot this project from using 2D animation to using 3D Animation with Motion Capture! It will save us so much time!"
Me: I'd be happy to look into it for you, but those technologies are very labour intensive and we don't currently employ anyone who has any experience in those technologies. However, I absolutely agree and I believe we could look at this in 1-2 years after the prototype of the application is completed.
Coworker: I'm more optimistic than you.
Actual conversation. Coworker made an animation once in college, which is the entire basis of their argument.2 -
So I found a course that shows how to make purely procedural animation for characters. The demo on youtube was pretty amazing. It is like 9 hours of coursework. I am expecting some good information from this. The course is for Unreal 5. I intend on extrapolating the relevant data to use with Godot.
I started watching the videos and everything is being done in blueprints. Not sure what I was expecting. The goal is to do procedural animation in Godot. The logical place to start is to install Unreal 5 so I can learn the blueprints and transfer that knowledge to Godot. Kinda funny. Yet another launcher I "get" to install.
The goal is reduce the artwork pipeline. If I can rig characters correctly I am hoping I can share animation procedures and not have to spend hours keyframing animations. Also, code that moves stuff is cool. I genuinely want to know how to make that work. No idea if the goal is achievable.

So my first computer... My dad got a Laptop somewhere around 96-97 for work as he had to travel a lot abroad. He also used to take work home and work there in the evening or on weekends. I kindof asked if I could play with it and he just opened defragmenting and I loved the animation. At least I think it had some animation. I know another computer I got later had it. However like the second or third time he left me alone with it, I decided to find something else and somehow managed to instead of defragment the hd, format it. Or atleast delete like a few folders on it. However that game was "lame", so I went out to play with a friend, as the computer wouldn't respond after some time. I've never seen him as angry as when I got home.
Long story short, me and my brother soon got our own computer, like a really " old" one the company where my aunt worked sold. It didn't had a cd rom drive, just a 3.5 and a bigger drive. My dad later took the big tape out and replaced it with a cd rom drive. It ran win95 I think. And we later upgraded it to 982 -
That moment when you finally decide to close devRant ... but before the closing-animation even fully stopped some kind of reflex moves your finger and opens devRant again.

I used to watch my brother code in Turbo C++, creating console games and doing university assignments. Writing something on the computer which transformed into something animated was such a wonderful revelation to me and that's when I started to learn bits and pieces of programming. Now, I'm a fill stack developer :)2

I'm going through my Udemy courses for the hell of it and see if I might even learn some things, started a course I knew would start of way too basic but Jesus Christ, 7 lectures for doing basic player movement and animation... Strap in boys, it's going to be a long ride

When I was 7, my dad bought me a pc. (in 2007). It had some sort of pentium processor and 2 gb ram. I had that pc until I turned 18. We changed the power supply some ports and mouse / keyboard but that's it. I learned all the programming basics, design even animation on that pc. It would take days to render a simple 2D animation. When I finally got the chance to go to a university and move overseas, I bought my own pc. As a full fee paying student, I still couldn't afford the latest and the greatest tech. I somehow bought a core i7, and with 8 gb ram, no bells and whistles. And now I'm almost 21. So when my friends recommend me killer games, I'm sorry fam, call me maybe 10 years later.2

Please don't use shake animations to signify errors, dear user interface designers.
The shake animation is a bad idea introduced to the UX (user experience) world by Apple in 2013 with iOS 7 and Mac OS, and is popularly used by FilePond in response to a failed upload. At some point, this animation was added to the Cinnamon desktop environment login screen in response to a wrong password.
The shake animation is not helpful at all. If anything, it is irritating and provocative.
The red "incorrect password" or "failed upload" text clarifies it well enough. There is no need for a shake animation to rub it into the user's face.6 -

So the game I've been working since January is showing off a demo at ECGC also known as the East Coast Game Conference in North Carolina :D
http://ecgconf.com/
If anyone is free on the 17th to 19th of April and enjoys games come try it out!
(it's $35 for a pass at least for the standard pass at least)
The game is called Redemption's Guild, which is a multiplayer online VR RPG and our company is called Unlit Games.
Our website: https://unlitgames.com/redemptionsg...
Sadly I won't be there but some people from the company will :D
I've been working hard to make this game, I hope the people that play it enjoy it as much as I loved (and still love) working on it.
Also our animator is giving a talk, so if you enjoy animation and possibly how it was done (i'm not 100% what the talk is about lol) stay for that aswell!2 -
you call your self master of CSS and the only thing you are good at is using frameworks always for animation and every little task. you can't even do simple animation with css. FUCKING BASTARD1

Not a rant.
But, who loves to run gource on your project's directory and gets excited staring at the awesome animation created based on the git logs.

Like age 8?
As a kid I really liked flash games and animations and wanted to get into it. I couldn't do flash, it looked too complicated but I found a little software by the name od KoolMoves that was just a simpler flash animation tool.
I did a bunch of shitty stick figure animations in it (hello to everyone from stick figure death theatre) but eventually I realized that I can make it do things (interactive menus, choose your story kinda things, move the player around, shoot...!)
I fell in love with AS1 and later AS2.0 and made bunch of demos and proof of concepts for systems and games. Most are lost to time and datarot by now)
Age 12
Eventually I found out I can make the entire Windows machine do what I want using first Batch files and later Visual Basic script (made a skype bot!) At this point I was also really into graphics and logo/web design
Age 15 - 20 or so
Then it was pretty natural to move to actual Visual Basic, then C# and finally I to C++. And I had the C family in my heart forever. I managed to get a but into 3D graphics too and got a part-time in archviz
Even by this point I never believed I could be a programmer as a profession. I thought of it just as something I love, but have no chance getting into compared to some of the names out there. I half expected to be either doing graphics (cause I found it simple at the time) or some shitty random job in an office.
20+
Finally I decided to go to uni and study software development, see if I can touch the future I always dreamed of! And... Well... I found out more than 80% of the people there never touch a language up until now and most people are just as retarded as I thought..
For a while I also worked as a game designer (still not being comfortable calling myself a programmer, so I chose a non programming position) but I ended up going into the code and improving and fixing game designer tools (it was unity and C#)
After seeing actual programmers at work in a company, and talking to a bunch of them I realized I already have everything I need to do this seriously and with that experience out of the way I breezed through uni, learned to love Linux and landed a proper job :)
I kinda hope my experience with long lasting self doubt will be useful for someone -
A command-line animation command.
Input frames and an expression
It will be able to reorder frames, play video/frames/music in the background, smooth transitions, diff and patch frames and render into a video
It will be written in Go. No idea what to call it.

Am currently handling a very bad code, once you add any feature the app crash and you have to fix the whole POKER application ( as you know poker is a really complicated and everything related to each other). The app crash and every single line of code goes wrong. As well i do barely have a break and am working overtime and during the weekend.
In addition to all of this i have a very complicated design and animation to the chips. Adding to this am the only developer working on this project.
Summing-up am working 10 to 11 hours per day 7 days a week. And still the manager is dissing me as if am not a good developer.
I feel so bad, i cant describe how am currently feeling.
So guys do you believe handling a very bad code might reflect your coding skills ?3 -
I’ve always hated the pixel fucking part in a webdev project. It’s the most frustrating becausing it’s partly about optinions.
I like the pixels better over there
I want this coler greener
Can we make this animation more cool?
Now imagine pixel fucking in 16 devices and 200 resolutions...3 -

So I ended up going with antergos and xfce DE on a cheapo 4gb ram i5 laptop.
It works, sometimes it hangs because of ram, but the thing that is infurating me the most is javaFX with animation loop (school course) whenever I run it, it works for a minute then oh good fucking Lord what happened to you!!!
It hangs, mouse doesn't work, and it takes like 10 minutes for it to respond back and somehow forcefully close the application, running that with task manager asude, I don't see anything critical, unless I'm reading this wrong
CPU averages around 10% and sometimes spikes to 70% few times
Ram is around 50%, swap is 50% too
What could the issue be in this case? I'm sure running the whole thing on windows this wouldn't have happened, what am I missing here?3 -
Going into a web animation class hoping to finally learn CSS animations as well as how SVGs work (I never knew)
Ending up finding out that the prof is using frameworks like Animate.CSS. FUCK.

Can anyone know how to make this kind of scrolling animation easily? Libraries? Frameworks? Or pure JS?

trying to rotate the character in Unreal Engine based on player input. It rotates around some sort of super weird point, so it looks like it's driving "backwards" while rotating, instead of rotating around the center of the mesh... sigh..

...
Solution: pass down the rotation value to the animation blueprint, rotate rootbone.
SUCK IT <.< See? it's not that hard, nor awkward. ffs.2 -
The shaking animation of FilePond when an upload has failed is not "aesthetic". It just rubs the error into my face. I am already frustrated enough that the upload faaaaaaiiiled (each time when I read "failed" on a computer screen, it sounds like whining to me. Computer/Website: "I FAAAILLED😭😭😭😭😭" OH, CRY ME A _______ RIVER, YOU UTTER LOSER!!!! You are made to WORK, not to 😭F😭A😭I😭L😭. ).
FilePond is nice, but do you think your stupid "oh-so-aesthetic" shaking animation when an upload 😭😭😭FAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIILED😭😭😭 makes me happier? The red gradient at the top and the "Error during upload" text is enough. Two indicators of 😭f😭a😭i😭l😭u😭r😭e😭 already. But this shaking animation is one "straw too much on the camel's back".
Sorry for insincere language. I just had to get this off my chest unfiltered.2 -

I started learning how to draw pixel art.
I bought aseprite and will be drawing some 16x16 pixels.
Do you know any useful guides ?
What I’m interested is character drawing and animation.
Drawing objects and nature like trees, boxes and stuff.
General techniques.
I already found some useful stuff about tile sets.
Once I finish drawing couple hundred of tilesets I want to proceed to more complicated stuff.2 -
When I was on my first internship, I started developing an Android app, while my friend developed a C# program that read a .txt with info and references from a mail service (in my country it's CTT).
The damn .txt files got really really big, na she had to display all of the data in a listbox (it was a PoC) and when he pressed the item, it had to fill some fields at the left of the listbox.
Needless to say, he didn't learn of multi-threading yet, and I had, so I taught him how to multithread so the app wouldn't lock up while loading the massive .txt file.
The listbox filling made a cool animation (like CMD executing commands from a bat file) and we even implemented a progressbar.
I felt like a badass Dev after that. -
devRant-issue-rant/issue:
So, I will try to use devRant as an issue traker for itself!
Issue:
Sometimes a gif shows on click just a blank black screen and an x for closing on top left corner. And it does not change after some waiting.
The issue stays the same after closing and opening the specific gif again and again. If it is loading for a long time, then a animation indicating that would be nice.
Strangely, other gifs are loaded and shown instantly.
Some specs:
devRant app
OnePlus One
CyanogenOS 13.1.2
I hope it is not too bold to reference you: @dfox4 -

It is mobile-friendly and is very easy to use.
Would love to hear your feedback.15 -
These days all companies just want to show off how evolved their AI is.
Any presentation without the neural networks CGI animation is incomplete!!!2 -
When - webkit-background-clip does not work with any kind of transition or animation and you're forced to make duplicate div on top of original without it and opacity:0. Just because designer want's quick fade transition.

Question for game developers 🙄
I wanted to try game development a few years back, started watching unity3D tuts, but I realized quickly that I can't actually do anything, because I don't have the skills to design animation and draw ui, and it was stupid to buy components online before I knew what I'm doing.. so I left it. Was I wrong? How did you start? Is it possible to make a game on your own, or do you need a team with members who each specialize in its own area (code, design, animation, music, etc.) And if team is needed, then how do you even start learning? Thanx -
People are like a stable set of database artifacts blah blah
Repeat this repost that
Did anyone ever figure out why it is that trained human detection models don’t work better ?
All you’d think they’d have to do is run an animation renderer to create data representing a human figure in every conceivable position imaginable with limbs moving into positions that were within certain tolerances in different positions with different textures
I don’t personally think the full capability is being represented2 -
So i keep thinking why don't people make reminders of a goal they want to follow.I mean i use it all the time it helps me be more organised.
** Do remember i am a NOOB in web Dev and would like to get better**
++// Any suggestions are greatly appreciated //++
So i came up with a Web App where
" we enter something we want to set a goal based on and the time duration we want it to run it for."
What's the best part " reminder is displayed in terms of a calendar with some animation (where we click on the date to show that we have lived up to that goal for that day)"
The page would also have a counter like a clock which would tell the user who has logged in if or not they are Procrastinating or actually following their set goal. -
UNOFFICIAL DEVRANT CLONE JAM - VOTING WITH CRICKETS - DAY 2
I see that nobody is leaving any comments on hackathon entries. It is troubling, because there is no telling if you approve the app behind the post or not - even if I were to collect all upvotes through myself.
Please give the feedback to our contestants in their respective rants! What it takes to make a "devRant clone" or there should be something else entirely? How do these clones look to you, which gets the most points?
Yesterday, @ostream has left the competition by removing account from devRant, but, hopefully, we'll see him again on the next hackathon. Now, it's only @retoor and @SidTheITGuy. They will clash for the right to get a cool animation of their devRant self. You vote can affect this.

ragedev (by @SidTheITGuy): https://devrant.com/rants/9946238
Leave your comments in respective rants. Read the rules and vote for as many as you like!2 -
Dat animation: open a WhatsApp chat, start recording a voice message, swipe up to lock the recording, cancel the recording and watch what happens.2

Few months ago, I had to do a project group in uni. The spec was horrible and very easy for someone who already know how to program, so I try to put this project into a higher level. Make a framework for it, spend night programming, make it in full ajax. Used bootstrap to make it pretty, used Jquery and animation. Anyway, me and my team were very happy about what we did, and what we learned when we made it.
Result ? Practically the lowest grade, because it was to complicated...FML -
17h for 5 Days working on a 3D Animation for an App Award. tough days but it was quite fun. 8/10 would work like a slave again

Manually having to rename 45 drawable resources for your animation because the gif-to-frame converter you used didn't let you type the filename.

Fuck the lineage install fcked something up big time on my OnePlus 6...
No more flashing unofficial roms...
I tried flashing stock several times... still cant get past the boot screen witch the animation.
Never happened before.... cant even access storage from TWRP.... fck....
Any ideas? Even if i restore the stock image, it just keeps showing the booting screen.15 -
Well one of my hobbies is making karaoke videos for songs I like to sing. So I'll look for an instrumental and if I cant find one make my own by reverse engineering an official audio track and removing the vocals xD then I use karaoke software to create the lyrics animation and stuff. It's pretty fun.

How do you animate stuff in linux. Video tutorials link . Very simple animation is also fine!
Blender, gimp etc are there but how to really use them.4 -
What's with this scroll bar? I like the changing size of the bar as it scrolls faster, is there a name for this type of scroll animation?12

Idea, a devrant type website that can be split into different work groups, animation, programming, composing, ect. and then subgroups for more specific jobs, like Reddit and DevRant fused together.7

Migrating angular project from version 2.x to 4.0.1 developed by a colleague. Everything's fine but there is a animation package he used which is extreme incompatible with angular 4. What a day xD

Update to watchRant!
(my second and probably last post about it)
watchRant client is mostly complete now!
Added: logging in, notif page, ranting, commenting, ++/-- of rants, search, amoled theme,
A surprise me btn for a random Rant (why is this not in the official app @_@, its in their API)
And the best:
Sick rant animation of the client of @Simmorsal!!
https://github.com/SIMMORSAL/...
some things are still missing: voting comments, stories page, comment/ranting with images (nobody takes images with a watch haha) ...
watchRant is also available on the PlayStore now (as sideloading to a watch isnt very convinient), but the latest updates will always be on github first
For context: https://devrant.com/rants/6340608/...13 -
on a 5 day rock festival vacation... a band with songs i barely know is on and i'm a bit high... there's a cool set of animations playing at the stage background and i spent the whole concert trying to figure how i could write each animation in opengl. i'll give them a shot back home, if i don't forget.3

If kinda curious about the Blazor Framework of Microsoft about the c# replacement. I'm a designer heavily concern about animation on the web, for what i have know till this day. Animation on the web was made by CSS and JS, and if c# replace js. That means all the toys libraries will be gone and we have to reinvents the wheel all over again.5

Hey guys. Days ago I was working in some "Unity2d animation test". You can download the demo apk and see the code here: https://github.com/Marks7e/Test
Give me your feedback please ♥️2 -
Anyone not a fan of Material Design especially the ripple effect? If not a fan, please tell me why. If yes, please tell me why, too.
For me, I feel like there's too much animation going on and I agree to someone that said it's cognitively distracting and it kinda breaks my train of thought. Any thoughts you can share?13 -
i am currently learning react and i find it easier to convert vanilla html css websites into react than writing a website in react from scratch. while writing a website, i am now accustomed to writing mobile first flex based css that looks nice , and handles most of the animation, show hide based stuff by classes. whereas in react if i start thinking about how states and context are going to work with it, i end up going bacl to the imported css to get it to look nice at first1

Start standing up for my health and my expertise more, dive deep into animation, get a job on the product side, find time for my neglected side projects, go on more walks, get with a hot dev girl who can act as my lead and can spank and beat me when my code is shitty, network more with other devs to build collective safety nets for each other, buy a house with a record player room and hockey garage, practice more love3

This is the sequel to my previous rant, if you don't know about it, go check my profile.
So, for some reason, when I opened YouTube Vanced, I am trapped into a loop of loading animation. And I thought "Hmm... Maybe my Internet sucks, let's try again.".
Then I switched my Internet on and off, go back to YouTube Vanced, the same loading animation loop.
Then I do switching the Internet for about 30 minutes, go back to YouTube Vanced, no progression.
Then I thought "What about YouTube?", I open Youtube, and you know what, YouTube loads it PERFECTLY. The loading animation takes longer than usual, but at the end, it still loads my recommendation and anything!
I thought "Wait, do they have an update?", then I go to Vanced Manager, and no, there is no new update for both Vanced and Vanced microG. There is a new update for Vanced Manager, though.
I decided to report a bug, but then I realized that the problem I am facing is too ambiguous for the developer to fix, so I decided not to do it.
So yeah, now I am sticking with YouTube, since I cannot find a solution better than it, and if you ask me, YouTube Vanced is still trapped in the loading animation loop.3 -
Create an animation of tree traversals.
I could use any framework or library, but I just used plain html/css/js.
It was fun.2 -
A quick question, I am thinking about upgrading my system which is currently as
Core 2 duo E8300 at 2.8 GHz
6 GB DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA GT 610
I know that its fairly low end but it was fine by me as its 4 years old. The problem is the system gets awfully slow when I fire up Android Studio with Chrome (5 tabs) and also the font rendering and animation of OS (both Windows 10 & Ubuntu) is hideous.
So what would you recommend to upgrade in order to overcome these problems.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Once upon a time I was a student. We had QBasic programming with graphics involved in it. Once I was thinking about animation as we were told in the classroom. In order to perceivably move an object, we were supposed to draw the object, erase the screen, give some delay then draw the object again at a slightly different position....repeat the same thing all-over...
I suppose I had not done this exercise even once.. I might have seen it happen at our labs, I did not like it.. because I was clearly able to make out that screen is clearing...there was too much fluctuation..it did not look good as an animation..
I tried to better the process by redrawing in black color instead of calling a clearscr() routine and keeping all other things same.
I had also put an infinite outer loop so that I can see the process all over again after the circle (it was a circle I was moving btw), started from one end of screen and reached the end of screen.
As I hit F5, I was so impressed by the results...that I kept staring at it for 10 passes of the circle.. it was pretty darn smooth.. -
How often should I worry about keeping an engine, non-enterprise, at arms with the existing frameworks if all I need is an event scheduler and animation possibility?
I have the need for task, animation and secure through the use of executables. Why should my engine be larger than 3mb in code? -
My first interaction with Computers started in 1996/1997 and it was Dangerous Dave, PacMan, Mario, Pre that pulled me in so deep. We had multiple Floppy Disks and each of them used to go awry after a few months of use. Had to keep deleting stuff to fit all my Favourite Games
A year later I learnt the basics of MS-DOS and GWBasic. Looking at seniors do C Programming on Borland Turbo made me feel scared and one of them said it is the real language to make Games, and all types of Animation stuff. I was very intrigued but only for a while. I kept playing Games which was what I was fit for at that time -
Chrome handles CSS animation on an SVG element with 500 nodes like a champ with an SVG graphic with outline animation over it.
Firefox barely animates the SVG then has tearing issues when a part of the SVG leaves the viewport and re-enters. Annoying AF and now a changed design. -
Does anyone else have problems with devRant? Whenever I exit a rant and go back to the 'main window', where the rants are supposed to be listed, I get an empty page (with the typical devRant background but without the loading animation). Rants won't load for me then.
Rants won't load for me except for the first time when I open the app. After I clicked on a rant and go back, it won't load.
Using a OnePlus 3 with Android 7.1.1, in case that matters. :)6 -
There weren't enough barbed poles in my sorry ass apparently. For I have inserted in a big one by deciding to use blender. 😬
Zero background in animation but I want to create a little animation and PowerPoint isn't proving enough for it, and after fucking around with Synfig I realized I actually need a 3d animation tool.
So yeah. Basically, fucked myself. -
Anyone here do animation?
So I'm developing this command-line animation program. It'll obviously only be for quick stuff
I'm thinking of accepting frames and an expression to order, overlay and diff/patch frames.
What kinds of things should I implement? I have done basically no animation ever.

I was late with getting into programming and only started considering it after completing an education in animation before (unwillingly) working jobs outside of that field for a few years.
I had to really dig to try and figure out what I'd enjoy doing, and it's when I asked myself what I enjoyed about things in the past like railroad tycoon that I got on the track (eh?) of putting stuff together and making it work.
I remember seeing my friend play and I was screaming internally at his "who cares it works" solutions. When we later played ottd I would try to set up my stuff so that it was readable and because I realized how annoying it is when I can't figure out what my friend's tracks are supposed to do without asking him.
I was basically a developer all along. It's just that my only programming language was railroad tracks and signals. -
Does anyone on here use the 3D software blender. What kind of Python do I need to learn (learned data analysis for internship but 80% sure won't be same as animation Python)1

Just received code review from interview technical task. 50 percent of it was because of encapsulation (that 5-8 variables could have been private instead of public). 20 percent was about shit that was expected but missing (error validation, dependency injection). It was missing because it was not specified in app requirements and also noone said that I have to build a production level application for a simple interview here. 10 percent was nitpicking about formatting(I used default intellij formatter) and one ide error that appeared because of project importing. And only 20 percent of feedback was actually constructive and useful. Cool. Also developer said that he was shocked that I made loading animation but didnt call it in my app. However I made it, but if you have fast internet connection it doesnt show up. I mean if you run my app on a phone with gprs connection u will see that damn animation. What Im supposed to do slow down the app so u could see it? But we are building production level app here no? Shit. It feels like he applied double standards to me or something. Half of review nitpicking about useless details and another half about shit that is expected to be in the app but was not even communicated. Also I did not get developers contact so I could ask him what the fck he wanted from me.1

Can anyone recommend any tutorials and assets to use when making movies/animations in unity?
Looking to turn my book series/potential game into a little series if i can get the hang of it.
I already know im going to use cinemachine for my camera system and I'll build my own audio management and trigger systems (Hopefully).
And a side note, does anyone know of anyone who would do some 3D character modeling if i was able to provide some character concept art and have a chat with them? -
To you, what's the best way to notice that user failed to log in/complete a form ? Alert, fading text, animation ? I'm talking about design7

used bootstrap, and the found a prety elastic side menu animation, turned out it can'twork with the best css fw.. fml

Worked on an iOS app that had horrendous rotation animation. Instruments to the rescue and worked at a colleague was using a resizable image with insets greater than the size of the image. Meaning when iOS tried to render the image it was doing a bunch of division by zero which was grinding the device to a halt.
-
Any ranters here play The Division? I'm from SE Asia. Anybody up for a few rounds this year end?
We should be reasonably close to each other, otherwise the high latency will turn the game into a flipbook animation show. -
Lol. Of all the dev social media, like Dev.to, Hashnode, stack overflow etc .. I find that the most help I get is RIGHT FUCKING HERE BABY. So I'm at it again, asking for help in the form of a question. I'm still looking to get a frontend job. My question is, is a short and sweet e-commerce website, mostly showcasing the ability to code a design, so not fully functional but has great JavaScript and React features in it, like mobile responsiveness, slide nav, item filter, sale price, add to cart animation, pagination, etc..a good resume project that can get you hired? I'm having a hard time finding which if my projects are good, or embarrassing to recruiters.8

I just animating third type of button. Now i have.
.link.type-button - standard button with default, primary and destruct color, small, default and large size, animation on it's back, selectable icon.
.link.type-roll - wierd type of button, with only icon visible and text on hover with some wierd shit animation, selectable icon ofcourse. Various sizes and colors as well.
.link.type-more - More or less static link with right arrow and ofcourse animation on hover.
So one site has three types of buttons with various properties.
And thinking about how overengeneered JS world is.
Fuck you JS world.6 -
The others!
Sounds like an horror movie XD
Aniway in animation the motto is "animation is concentration", but i think all work are
P.s. sorry for my bad English -
I want to start with web development and combine ESP projects with a nice interface or just to make a small websites showing algorithms in an animation. (Just as examples) But where the hell do I start. I have a background with C/C++ and python but want to develop more skills. Like do I go with react, node.js, typescript and postgres or something else? And what are the first steps I should take? If any of you got tutorials they can recommend I'd really appreciate that, because I feel like there are a ton of BS tutorials out there...3

Hi, so I’ve made a site where I upload small(very) projects I work on in my free time, they aren’t huge animation based rocket ships , rather small but handy stuff like basic light-weight alert boxes.
Now am thinking if any one of you guys have some amazing plugins or things you wanna show, but are feeling too lazy to upload, I can give you a sub domain like awesomesheet.simplecode.in(you’ve to upload the files somewhere like 000webhist)
Just let me know in mohit@simplecode.in
So here it is.
https://simplecode.in
This was made in 2-3 days, so please be kind.
The place is still under construction2 -
After years of using an android wear on a regular basis I've gotten used to it, I use pujie black for a simplistic watch face and love it, I answer calls on it (although it doesn't have a speaker), and reading texts has been a lifesaver at times. I initially had an issue with the battery life but that was probably my fault for creating a really animation heavy watch face on watchmaker. Anyways while I love the thing it's really excessive (i know original argument huh?), I would love a smart band that can do all the simple things ( tell time make calls and display/read notifications ) and some awesome IoT remote functionality. After some research I found the nex band (I had actually seen this band often prior on Amazon but always just skipped over it cause I assumed that it was a fitness tracker, lesson learned again, don't assume). It looked promising, unfortunately it lacked a few key points that are essential to me. It was missing the most obvious thing, a clock, the band is split up into 4-5 rgb displays so there isn't much room for a clock. Second there is a proprietary clip on micro usb adapter (Ughhhhhh). Finally it it looks too niche and bulky. I'm keeping an eye on it cause i would love it if they at least fixed the clock and appearance issue as I don't travel much so the adapter would just sit on my nightstand anyways. Does anyone know of anything similar to the nex, everytime I search anywhere I get nothing but fitness or motion trackers.

How to add lottie animation in app? I added it by using the instructions on there website. But its shows that Manifest Merger Failed.

Hi guys i have been off for a while but in that process i realized am good with animation and design plus video editing... programming is a bit hectic am almost giving up but the problem is that i am on my last semester (computer science) and i have to come up with a project in order to graduate... I just need some advice1

"I only started tasting the worm in this handful of worms that long ago in some forgotten design document might once have been an apple when I got a load of the character animation..."
The sadness when you realise that Yahtzee Croshaw's description of Alien: Colonial Marines is also applicable to every software you have ever developed. -
I started a web animation library, because there were no satisfying lib's available...
And today I remembered a conversation with a teacher about the web animation api!
Fuck, I'm glad I rememberer that advice, safed me a lot of fucking around with js... -
Git the last of the components yesterday and put them together, started to play with software today.
The idea is to have an Ambilight system (have LEDs on the sides of the TV reflect the contents on the screen with their color), but for testing I programmed a simple color run and I like playing with different animations so much that I can't decide whether to play around some more with animations or do the screen capture thing :)
Here's the color run:
https://youtu.be/RvtZuTNWcb0
I even thought about doing something like reading animations from a file and even fellow devs can then play around :)1 -
The documentation/website I was reading uses a time-delay animation. Just when I am back into working in the code on my main monitor the animation pops up and distracts me from the code I was writing.
