Today we were all called into a meeting and the CEO was livid. He went on a rage about how the CTO was wasting money on useless shit (GitHub Enterprise). He said I bought laptops for a reason if there’s a fire someone better protect our assets and code. He wouldn’t reason with us and went into github and deleted everything. The CTO was fired and no one is leading our team. Wondering if I should quit 😶29

Ever wanted cheat codes to devRant? Well, that's weird. But here you go, I guess.
Since the avatars do not use any external assets (Such as images), all avatars are generated. To be friendly to people who want to make third-party devRant clients (such as devRantron), avatars are generated server-side, so that the assets don't need to be distributed, and third-party programmers don't need to work out rendering avatars.
But this allows you to cheat a little.
The devRant avatars API works like this: you request a really long URL from the API, specifying the IDs of each cosmetic item the user has active, and it returns a PNG file. But you don't need an auth token to generate an avatar (which makes sense), so the avatar API is essentially a sandbox you can play around with if you have the time and patience.
You can write a really good avatar previewer with this knowledge, and see your avatar with a white tiger, even if you don't have the ++s13 -
Apparantly, wanting to use company assets for a smoke machine so when clients visit you can say "Welcome to the cloud!" is immature.3

So, in the printing industry, FTP has a long and storied history as the standard method of sending art assets. But as time has gone on, more and more people are utterly incapable of handling FTP.
Customer: "I sent you the file. It's called xyz.zip"
PM: "I don't see the file."
Customer: "I know I sent it."
PM: "Let me check with IT."
I check the logs. No such file was uploaded.
PM: "What program did you use to send the file?"
Customer: "Firefox"
Every. Fucking. Time.
It turns out the Germans actually have a word for this:20 -

Me: fixes a bug on the prodserver
Me: redesigns a gui of an app

Namecheap: *cricket noises for over a year*
Today: "hEy ThErE cOnDoR, yOuR dOmAiN WiL eXPirE iN 24 hOuRs!1! rEnEw NoW, yOU rEadY?"
Me: "No you motherfucking bastards, a bank transfer takes 3 days at least. Oh wait you don't even accept bank transfer, how convenient!"
And what if I didn't see that email right after your fucking craptacular automated notification system sent it to me, hmm? Don't you Namecheap of all companies know how fucking *vile* domain squatting on the .com is?!!
MOTHERFUCKING CUNTS!!! Jeopardize my domains like that *one more fucking time*, and guess who will be taking his assets to the sexist bastards that I tried avoiding for so long, GoDaddy! FUCKERS!!!21 -
At a game dev class. Class starts and everyone is already doing something and I don't know what. I hear the some guy telling us about what to do with those "assets he sent us". Apparently everyone got a mail with the assets we'll be using and an instruction video for the day. Everyone but me, that is. I call the guy over and I tell him I didn't get the email. "Well why didn't you get the email?" HOW THE FUCK SHOULD I KNOW? You didn't tell us we'd be getting one so I couldn't exactly tell you to resend it. So now I'm just sitting here watching the rest of them work awkwardly...(first rant btw)4

My co-worker gave me assets for my project with names like- layer_1, layer_1_copy, layer_1_copy_copy...2
-
Dear designer, if you're generating assets please make sure you're naming them right. And oh, get rid of that .DS_Store thing please.10

Last night I nearly finished my portfolio site. I was working on the perfect framework and workflow like forever. But in the end I accomplished a pretty pleasing solutions. For the back-end I choose Laravel with it's built in rest-api, the front-end is managed by Vue. I'm also proud of my assets-management which is handled by Gulp + Webpack (Laravel Mix). But here I decided to run Gulp on images, fonts and CSS and let Webpack bundle the JavaScript.
And what really crawls my balls is that I can write Sass and Jade, even use partials and organized the shit out of this website, and let Gulp just vomit some minified HTML and CSS on the other end.
Man that feels so good.20 -
I fucking hate "modern" front end. Just a little "hello world" and you already get a useless bundle of js, which is x times then other assets combined.
Not to mention that no fucking setup I tried works, documentation is as accurate and up-to-date as apple maps and all components are basically part of a civil (cock) war.
So far the most frustration aspect in programming I have to endure5 -
"If you use a css framework splat splat splat splat bullshit bullshit bullshit"
Listen fam, I write apps that a good portion of the time will be used internally by the company I represent or work for. They don't give 2 flying fucks if I write an entire webpack ecosystem for them to push out assets and 10k outher bs shit in to their frontend end. They just care that shit connects properly to their backend and it spits out the information they need, which 9 times out of 10 does not require a lot of the shit y'all cry about.
Bootstrap will suffice, bulma will suffice. I don't neckbeard over simple shit like this.15 -
FUCK THIS FACEBOOK ASSHOLES FOR GIVING MY NUMBER TO A CLIENT. FUCK YOU ASSHOLES. I DON'T SIGNED UP FOR GIVING OUT MY NUMBER TO EVERYONE .I HOPE YOUR COMPANY LOSE ALL THEIR ASSETS AND MARK ZUCKERBERG GO BANKRUPT .... FUCK YOU ...13

You spend months coding an app, you refactor and restructure multiple times, you apply all sorts of smart patterns and algorithms you learned over all those years, you go back to the books even, you spend money on a ton of assets, localization, marketing, you spend time contacting hundreds of people that could boost your app in the ocean of apps. And once your app hits the store, people complain that $0.99 is too much.6

Slack, my boss and I:
Me: Lucky I left when I did, I'll get through that fix when I'm less 🤢
Boss: Don't worry, take care of Harold now
Boss: If that's what we're calling the parasite
I recently found out I have a parasite, which I brought from India, living in my intestine. I'm on antibiotics. We're three devs at a startup running two products and on a shoestring... so Harold and I get our assets to office.10 -
College student here.
What are the most important skills/assets one should bring to the workplace? As a developer and a colleague.5 -
Six or seven years ago, I worked for a large financial organization as part of a very large effort to convert server assets from physical to virtual. The consultants on site were in bed with the vendor of a terrible piece of software designed for that purpose. After a couple weeks on the job I'd had it, and sat down in between sessions of "validating" the conversion procedure, and started writing my own software for converting Linux servers. After a couple days it was working great, and they wound up adopting my software as the default method for Linux conversions.
Years later, I'm interviewing for my current job and one of the interviewers tells me he used my converter some time later and loved it. Pretty sure it's what swung the interview for me. -
3 weeks into a new job I learned that my predecessor (who resigned and was out the door two days after I started) didn’t know how to secure s3 buckets when all of our production image assets got replaced with elder porn.
Jury’s still out if it was actually him the whole time.1 -
Interviewed for a Q&A position.
Found bugs and errors on the test questions just fine.
Found broken assets and errors within the test itself outside of the questions. (Misspellings, typos, broken images, botched styling, etc.)
Didn't get hired because they thought I'd spend too much time finding bugs.
What gives?7 -
Why are all the feminists silent who support equality between genders regarding the Jeff Bezos case? They should suggest her to be independent and not take her husbands assets right? 🤔🤔20
-
Designer: here's the layout/mockup file, how long will it take to build this page if I extract all the assets for you?
Me: well if you extract them in the right format and size this time, probably by end of day...
Designer: perfect! (Actually gets me everything in the right format)
*4:30 pm*
Me: alright I'm done
Designer: wait where are all the videos, and animations, and the parallax, and hover states and tool tips and interactive charts?
Me: WTF are you talking about? You gave them all to me as images?
Designer: ...they are supposed to be interactive.
Me: 😑 -
If point-and-click game made in PowerPoint, that my grandma actively played because of boredom, is "creative hacky solution", then there you have it.
First game is "The Adventures of Sayid", second "Hide and Seek" with creepy pasta sound and graphic assets from Shrek: Activity Center.
Well, that's my childhood without Internet, what I can say!3 -

fuck these websites thAT ARE GETTING SO GOD DAMN HEAVY THEY LOAD WHEN I TURN OFF THE WIFI.
literally just fuckin shut off the wifi while this one bloated, shitty website loading aND THE WEBSITE DISPLAYED. of course, the gigabytes of javascript haven't loaded so the buttons weren't functional, bUT AT LEAST I COULD SEE THE CONTENT INSTEAD OF A WHITE SCREEN.
if ur gonna have a shitload of assets at least make your websites be viewable while the page is loading13 -
Me: ok let's actually start work on a project when I get home. Something small that I can finish, bin and be happy with, just need to clone my assets repo...
*Types command, nothing happens*
Hmmm that's strange, opens router config and sees it syncing at 0Mbps
*Mad World starts playing*1 -
FUCK YOU, UNITY.
The fucking UI lag causes mouse events in the editor to aggregate and act fucking weird when it's randomly reloading scripts and shit.
I just needed to move some assets into another folder. I control clicked a few scripts at the same time Unity decided to recompile them. It ended up thinking I was making a box selection and then, weirdly, some mouse combo that duplicates scripts (didn't even know that existed).
Okay, whatever, nbd. I just control clicked the other scripts (all with `1` postfixes) to delete them. No problemo, right click, delete.
FUCKING UNITY LAGGED, THOUGHT I BOX-SELECTED AGAIN, AND DELETED EVERYTHING IN THE GOD DAMNED FUCKING FOLDER. HOURS OF WORK. JUST GONE.
FUCK YOU UNITY. YOU'VE CRASHED THREE TIMES THIS WEEK AND NOW THIS. FUCK YOU.14 -
I just compiled a color palette for devRant-related drawings that anyone can import into GIMP and Inkscape. Already successfully using it for graphics promoting dR Community Matrix (more on that later), hence the name: "drcm-palette".

For reference I used colors produced by "Tailwind CSS 10-color Palette Generator": https://tailwind.simeongriggs.dev/19 -
Sick and fucking tired of this bullshit.
Previously worked with Laravel, used 'gulp watch' to watch for changes in assets and now they changed things for the better of Laravel Mix as a fucking wrapper for webpack. Now I have to do shit load more stuff to get gulp working, 'cause otherwise my 'npm run watch' shits itself every fucking time I run that shit, doesn't matter what fix is aplied. Battling that bullshit for 3 days now and shit's not working anyhow. Stupid fucking bullshit. Sorry, had to let it out from myself.10 -
Need to implement something huge on a app that I'm working on.
The design team is not from my company.
All the design that I have is in a PDF that I can't extract the images and they are low res.
How the actual fuck do they expect me to do a good job if I don't even have the design and assets to work with -
Idiot: Hello, Sam gave me yo #, I need avery small database system, how much wd it cost.
Me: I can't giv u a price without knowing features of the system in details.
Idiot: letme send u a list of the features.
Me: ok
Idiot: Budget issues, Payroll, Reporting, capabilities, Purchasings,Projects/Awards, Trainings ,Input query, Fixed, assets, Central invoicing, General ledger, Accounts, payable, Accounts receivable.
Me: you managing a financial institution?
Idiot: no, its a university project.
Me: well am sory bt I can't help you guys, I dnt do campus projects.2 -
Got another thing I'm interested in hearing from other developers.
What made you the developer you are today? Like what made you get into programming and was was a defining moment that changed your development process?
For me I started out making Minecraft mods because I was bored, spent most my time hard coding and suddenly discovered a way to do external assets and since then everything I've made is build to be individual standalone modules with easy to create user generated content.9 -
Weeeell…
I have been in a team where every week they had this long and complex task of refactoring everything and changing lots of assets (~2 days of work every 2 weeks) cause the senior tards refused to use a script for it. Told them to use the goddamn backend or a script… the answer? “But that would take at least two days of work! Maybe even three! (As a one time job)” Math you ducking ducks! The second time you use it you are in a time profit!2 -
My brain: you have 30 min until you gotta catch the bus, that’s enough for that css fix you wanted to implement on the website!
My development environment: Hey that looks a lot better and works perfectly fine!
My website in production: Fuck you. Fuck your changes. Fuck your bus.
What do we learn? Precompile assets before pushing to production and don’t push to production if there’s a bus to catch 🙃 -
ok, so i remake music and make sprites sheets for smaller developers, in an attempt to make them more recognizable. the devs normally give me a place in the "special thanks" section of the credits, and then i got people spam messaging me asking me to make them a game or something, so i explain to them i dont make games, just assets. however no matter how many times i tell certain people, they still keep on asking me to make a game when all i do is remake music and do a bit of pixel art, so the conversation usually goes a bit like this -
Them: Hi! I was wondering if you could make me a game?
Me: I don't actually MAKE games, just things you can use in your game.
Them: So can you make me a game?
Me: I don't know a single bit of programming, i just like to remake stuff.
Them: YOUR A FAKER???
Me: No-
Them: YOU SAID YOU CAN MAKE ME A GAME!
Me: i never said that, and i DON'T make GAMES,
JUST ASSETS.
Them: i'm blocking you
Me: why tho
Them: blocked :)
Me: [content hidden]

so yeah. this is why i stopped making assets for games and just remixed tunes for personal use.4 -
Client won't get us assets so we've replaced a lot of images with pics from placecage.com and we're presenting it to him today.3

Saving to buy a Mac.
I'm a full stack developer: I do Web Development, Backend Development.
Not a graphic designer but I use Photoshop and Illustrator to modify assets that I receive clients.
What is a good budget Mac Laptop that I can hang on for most of my work ?16 -
Apparently, as a front end developer, I do not need a Creative Cloud license anymore. I will have to rely on the Designers to cut up all my assets.
I could barely hold a straight face while I posted this rant.3 -
Lab needs a crawler to download some assets, none of my business though
But why not
Haven't touched crawler for two years
Google for latest state of art
Found scrapy
I have to define a class for a crawling script?
Got scared
Went back to beautifulsoup and request
Got the job done in 20 mins

So IBM finally jettisoned the cancer that was Virginia Rometty a few weeks back. They had an opportunity to move fresh blood and solid managerial background into the top slot with Jim Whitehurst (Redhat) and try and recover their flagging market share and do some sane business strategy. They passed on that opportunity and instead appointed the old guard bootlicker who overpaid for Redhat to the tune of 20x what it was worth, and signalled their intent to continue staying the course of the Titanic and it's slow inevitable trek towards the bottom of the ocean. The board wants a yes man, and they got one.
This is basically what I assumed would happen, but I have some other predications as well:
- Whitehurst will leave to a better company
- the redhatters that haven't already left will be replaced with commodity labor
- Redhat will be the least stable Linux offering 2 years after the last hatter leaves
- they will sell off most of their existing software assets to HCL/ similar consulting partners like they did with domino and websphere to stem the bleed
- the displaced in that move will either quit or be replaced
- their cloud initiative will collapse under the weight of its own stagnation and glacial pace of development
- they will attempt to salve these wounds by moving focus to global services, reducing profit loss by cutting salary costs, further diluting their eroding ability to innovate
- they'll buy at least one other trendy software company at ridiculous valuation, and sell it off within 2 years at a massive loss
- the CEO slot will start to resemble the late Roman empire with a new CEO every other week
- Redhat assets will be sold to Google inside of 5 years
Last prediction: I will be overjoyed being able to witness the death of IBM in my lifetime. Fuck them 🍻7 -
I love react native but I hate the fact that I have to type
cd android && ./gradlew cleanBuildCache && cd .. && react-native bundle --platform android --dev false --entry-file index.js --bundle-output android/app/src/main/assets/index.android.bundle --assets-dest android/app/src/main/res/ && cd android && ./gradlew assembleDebug
just to generate an apk file.12 -
So, I spent the last two days hunting down a bug about some of the static assets not getting versioned.
It turned out to be a mistake by some newbie missing a quote in html. The html parser responsible for versioning the assets broke once it ran into that bad html.
Somehow, I don’t feel satisfied. I guess I shouldn’t hope for big reasons for seemingly big problems. -
Anyone else have a background in something unrelated to their current job? I have an MA in religion and public life, got a job as a test analyst and slowly ended up maintaining assets for our apps. Some days I feel very inspired and lucky I got into this industry, and some days I feel totally out of place. I don't know if I should just throw myself into it, study more on my own and make myself comfortable here or just move on and go back to grad school or something.7
-
doing things right seems to be a waste of time
especially considering how fast things change beneath you
for years I've said I should just stop overoptimizing but I've yet to fucking try it. I said this to myself 5 hours ago and what am I doing. I spent the last 5 hours trying to overoptimize for a theoretical scenario that I won't ever even be in, because I haven't even decided what I want to immediately do
how about immediately do something Jesus fuck
next Tuesday this system will have to be rewritten again anyway
how many fucking asset loading systems do I want under my belt
just load the fucking assets
maybe decide on which assets you'll be using first so then you don't overoptimize for "WELL MAYBE ILL LOAD THEM INDIVIDUALLY THEN PUT THEM IN A NICE IMAGE IN RAM FIRST BEFORE I SEND IT OFF TO THE GPU" omg just shut up. just because you can doesn't mean you should. doesn't help everyone using this thing keeps insisting you do it this way. but you don't fucking need to.
actually you know what, I blame them. they kept confusing me with yOu ShOulD do It ThiS WAY. next thing I know I'm walking through every possible conceivable way to do asset loading so I can decide how to load assets and then end up in architecturizing of the perfect system. I didn't want to be on this path. but they told me to be on this path. I blame them
take-away: if you can make it work at all, just use that unless it breaks something. fuck how or for "what" the dumb system is designed. people don't stick to their "designs" anyway -- it's idealism just like free stuff sounds great in theory, but in reality it just shits up everything because it's unrealistic3 -
So I start developing a site for a client and request for the site assets.. Client provides 100+ 25mb sized .tiff images.... For the web! I tell him that the page load times will be insanely slow and I explain the need for optimized images.. He doesn't care.. So I upload the images and he flips out at the performance hit, complaining about the slow load times.. Here I am sitting and optimizing the images when I should be home :/1
-
Just thought I'd mention that there are some assets and training material for cryengine available on humble bundle right now for those of you who are into game dev1
-
I'm fiddeling around with progressive web apps. I made something and hosted it on a subdomain. Today I made a typo and found my app on an other domain. All my assets and files are copied there. He even uses my SSL certificate.
It's not that spectacular. The app is nothing "revolutionary". It's just the first time it happend to me.
Have you ever found your code on other websites ? How did you react ?7 -
Fuck heroku, fuck precompiling assets, fuck the assets pipeline, fuck fuck fuck fucking piece of shit3
-
Hi. I would like a hamburger. Would you like cheese? No. I would like a hamburger with no cheese. Ok. Wait here 15 minutes and I'll give you a hamburger with cheese.
It's the same everywhere... image assets... project managers... node packages... almost every exchange I have - is with someone who isn't present and cannot deliver what they promise.
Huge thanks to the other people who follow through.1 -
The license for assets on epics new asset store is insane:
For any Content licensed to you under a Standard License, you may not:
i. attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, translate, disassemble, or derive source code or data from the Content;
HOW IN GODS NAME AM I SUPPOSED TO USE ASSETS I BOUGHT WHEN I CAN'T EVEN DERIVE FUCKING DATA FROM THEM???? Like how in hell am I supposed to load textures and meshes when the only thing I'm allowed to do is to maybe look at them
They DO know graphics cards can do sweet fuck all with a JPG texture, right? Like I /genuinely/ have to translate that thing into a proper format for it to have any use11 -
I'm dockerizing this old CMS that needs a database query to resolve URLs for static assets.
Yes, a query for every single static resources. Fuck me.2 -
Once again, due to poor management, I find myself exporting svgs from Figma, saving them as pngs, and importing them into our application... (remember I'm a developer, NOT a designer)
Don't we have a design team who can export the needed assets for a feature?
"Noooooo fullstackclown can do all of that himself! He's an expert!!!"
The fucks are lucky I dabble in digital art as a hobby and even know how to do this stuff...
FML1 -

I once had to fix a webservice endpoint another developer added that accepted any file from the public internet and loaded it directly onto an NFS file mount with the rest of the site's image assets and then inserted a record of the file into SQL via a hand-stitched query with parameters from the endpoint.
I was working for a large enterprise company at the time... I was very disappoint. -
I've been editing sound effects, animations, image assets, creating things from scratch if I don't have what I need, all while I am hired as a software engineer.
We are supposedly an interactive contents company, while we have only two designers (none of which specializes in software design) for half a dozen projects, no sound engineer, and no animator.
I've been using Krita and Audacity as much as VS Code these days - my hobby skills I never thought would use in a professional environment. I wonder how did my predecessors work, surely not every software engineer also happens to be a hobbyist artist.4 -
Anyone here has any experience with buying shit from STMicroelectronics? Requested a fucking account like an hour ago and their shit confirmation email has not gotten to me yet.
Any other sites y'all would recommend for getting their shit? This bs is getting ridiculous...for a company whose fucking assets are worth billions to take this fucking long to send a confirmation email.
Fucking Adafruit took nada to send me the shit i wanted. Fucking hell man.4 -
I think what's worse than bad coding is bad network connection. Can't load StackOverflow, Network Assets, Run Reports, or pull updated repositories because somebody is hogging up the bandwidth. FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU
-
Why are OSS maintainers so fucking incompetent and cocky? A documentation clearly says to use "use_parent_assets: true" when creating a child theme. Yet not a single fucking line of code actually checks that value. The fix is literary a single if(value) assets = deepMerge(parentAssets, assets). But because some contributor somewhere didn't write that line to the maintainer's liking, it's been hanging in the air for months.
Take your head of of your ass, there's thousands of people paying for support & addons for your product, and you can't add one fucking line to fix a rather critical bug.6 -
Accidently created a folder called "assets" next to my "Assets" folder, deleted it from MonoDevelop and instead it deleted both of the folders... irrecoverably...
Maybe spent about a year on that project and I lost 6 months progress...
Like how did it even manage to delete my folder irrecoverably?!?!1 -
Another small update on my games modding stuff...
Currently building a command line tool to pack the game data, currently have a working sprite packer and am able to actually read data from the packed file and export all images byte for byte... Holy shit I might be able to actually do this!
Let me know if anyone might be interested in seeing a demo or some very unclean source code!5 -
sudo rm * ../assets doesn't delete all files from the assets folder... (I was sleepy at this moment)
-
Oh man. It feels so good to be working on things I care about again.
I spent the day porting Republic Commando assets to Garrysmod; going to be working on a new gamemode in it.
I feel bad I stopped honestly. It brings me joy to bring others joy with my code, especially Star Wars stuff.3 -
Spent a day trying to come up with an intelligent way to compile assets only to realize I recreated Redux... 🙃
-
I spent the last 2 days, my father's birthday, and my birthday working on a bug for the game in developing for mobile. And I've done everything to try and fix it. Optimize the vertices, deleted assets not in use, organized all my assets into separate folders, and you know what. Fuck it. If "app not installed" I'm going to port it to PC.
-
A game lover and anticipator of No Man's Sky. It's the shittiest, most boring, most repetative game i ever played. the graphics sucks. the game assets suck...the game sucks. The apparent lack of variety and stuff you can do will piss you off. This is thr game which could have been one od the best but turned out to be worst.3
-
!rant, but let me tell you this
I wanted to automate some tasks in work, because it started to be a pain in the ass, manually copying those assets took me between 30 - 50 min
let me see, I always wanted to check out python so I started to copy paste some code together, editing it and after a few hours all I know I have a tool which logs in to our work CMS download and unpacks a zip archive, creates a backup from the old files in the repository and moves the files I just downloaded in the repo, I put this in a loop for our twenty languages (websites) and its done
Im amazed, I never picked up a language this easy to use2 -
You people might like to make fun of the engineer who put an entire game in VRAM and then played it from there, but I had the idea to preinstall game assets to VRAM years ago, and once GPUs gain persistent RAM, it is a no brainer
Not everything that sounds silly is useless, damn it. Sometimes it is progress in the making.7 -
I was just setting up a Website, and after a few hours oft work, it was done and working absolutely fine. So proudly I presented it to my customer, who then said something like: "Okay, but why is there all this weird serif font thing without any graphics going on?"
I searched the whole code of the page and the CSS, haven't found any mistake. all the files were also where they should be. After more than a week and a few mails form an unhappy customer, I found the problem by accident: I just used the folder name "assts" instead oft "assets".
Since then, I always note which file or folder I rename.8 -
Just finished the prototype of my HTML5/Canvas implementation of a visual novel engine. The actual script exists behind the scenes on a REST like web service (to act as a sort of drm). The assets for the game and UI layouts are stored in what I call a shit file. Their is s a utility called the shitpacker that creates a shit file from a directory structure. The name of my engine is the Pyst engine. Pyst stands for Python Stub...as the game script is actually a subset of Python that I created. Eventually I will probably move Pyst to JS so I could hypothetically support offline games.
-
This is a continuation of my previous rant...
I did it! I overcame my anxiety to work on the dev database (don't worry, I made backups). At first I got really anxious and almost panicked at the thought of possibly messing up and procrastinated a few minutes. After the intial anxiety has passed I just did it and it worked. I didn't destroy anything nor did I made any mistakes. One step closer to becoming more confident when working with company assets4 -
Eclipse deleting my entire project, roughly few thousand LOC and a lot of assets. (Probably my silly mistake, though I don't know what I did)

Ok... Able to pry myself away from fallout 76 and fire up for some programming...
Van't decide whether I want to build my game engines debug and root dev tools how I thought, thinking of building the engine to almost behave like a VM but not quite, it still is compiled just like a normal game but has a built in developer terminal that actually acts like an extra operating system/BIOS that can be left to boot the games assets and everything like you would have for an end user or the startup can be interupted to initialise the terminal prior to everything being loaded...
Following the osdev Wiki tutorials to actually build the dev terminal itself but just unsure whether or not to impliment this system the way I think or not... Opinions?1 -
Today I discovered that Betheme for Wordpress stores data base64 encoded in the database. Meaning you can't just do a search replace when you migrate a site to a different domain. That combined with Chrome based browsers not loading mixed security assets, but Firefox (the browser I use) does, makes for a confusing trouble ticket.
You have to change the setting to serialize sanely, then go into every post and save to update the stored data. Fortunately, the site is new so I only had one page to update, but I can't imagine the headache an established site would be to migrate.3 -
Fox Business: Coinbase preps Dogecoin listing.
TLDR: more fake money!
There's more and more assets being created in the crypto economy," Armstrong said during the call. "I think it's going to be something kind of like apps in the App Store on the iPhone, where there's eventually millions of these assets created over time, and so we're putting a lot of work and thought into how do we accelerate our pace of asset addition."

I decided to get over my pride and just start paying for assets that I don't have the skill, time, or patience to make myself and I have never been more productive or creatively fruitful.
It frees me up to do the stuff I can do instead of spinning my wheels doing the stuff I wish I could do.3 -
I thought I posted about this awhile back but I didn't. I'm glad since the story is so much better now.
6 weeks ago: Told I'm going to be on a super fun JAMStack build with lots of sexy animations. Sweet, this will be a fun build!
5 weeks ago: Find out what the timeline on this incredibly ambitious project is. I start raising flags cause everything needs to go PERFECT for this to not blow up and/or turn in to a dumpster fire.
4 weeks ago: Project "kicks off" with a meeting with the client. We find out that they've decided to do another round of revisions on their design comps, but we have what we need for sprint 1. We provide a list of all the assets/information we still need for sprint 1 success.
3 weeks ago: Still waiting on some assets for sprint one, but we're fumbling our way through. Still waiting on the PM to get around to doing their PM job and building out our backlog / gathering requirements for us.
2 weeks ago: Sprint 1's end date comes and goes. Still need assets from the client, I've personally asked them for the same asset 3 different times. Sprint 1 gets extended 1 week.
1 week ago: We deliver sprint 1 page templates, minus the resources we're still waiting for. Get chewed out by the client regarding the pages not looking like their comps (Yeah, no shit sherlock, you never sent us the assets)
This week: Working on Sprint 2 commitments. We have 2x as many page templates to deliver, per developer, as we had the first sprint. Still waiting on Sprint 1 assets. Don't have Sprint 2 assets. Wait, what about the global styles? They still haven't sent those to us yet either.
Requirements? Guess I'll spend valuable dev time tracking those down for myself.
Client? Well, they're pissed off we haven't hit our commitments yet.
Oh well, at least we have a pimple faced, fresh out of college, CS major, with no real development experience rolling on to this cesspool of a project.
Other devs? Well, we're out of fucks to give. Lets just watch this thing burn.
Oh, I forgot to add, we have 17 page templates to deliever between today (2/27) and 3/18. #NoFuckingWay -

New strategy to combat managers:
If you claim we can't afford the additional time for the tests that come with the feature, I won't build the feature.
If you claim we can't afford the additional time for the proper API versioning that comes with the feature, I won't build the feature.
And finally, if the internationalized texts, designs, and image assets are not complete when it comes time for development, I won't build the feature.
It's time to rise and stand against the "You're an engineer! do it all!" notions. I'm not a designer. I'm not a translator. I'm not a by-hand manual customer tester. And I'm certainly not going to take any more of your shit.2 -

Now I can't compile scss assets without a fucking gem error.
I'M IN A PYTHON ENVIRONMENT, FUCK OFF!

hate to create huge one timers. got to build huge migrate tool (luckily there its not thousand of users) to migrate from mysl to mongo, then to upload assets properly at place. Its also got to be a new api test. Which also i wrote.(the api). Eveything is fine except the time. They wanted me to finish two days ago and i almost got it. But my head is about to explode and code is messy...
-
You start a new project. Do you:
1. Code the application first and worry about naming, branding, and graphic design once the core is finished.
2. Name and brand the application first, get all the graphic assets ready, then worry about coding the core.4 -
Has OSS Projects build systems become more complicated lately?
I took a stab at building concourse ci on FreeBSD. It being written in go, I expected it to be rather straight forward but no.
To "compile" the web UI assets, yarn (an alternative nodejs package manager apparently) was required. (Are js and CSS really compile targets now?)
Installed yarn and ran yarn build, it complained about lessc not being installed, so ran yarn install lessc which then told me that I was running an unsupported operating system.
I can compile the actual consourse binary just fine, but without yarn doing it's thing the assets required for the web UI does not get compiled in and therefore doesn't work properly.
Maybe I compile the web UI assets in Linux, and cross compile my FreeBSD binary...5 -
Can anyone recommend any tutorials and assets to use when making movies/animations in unity?
Looking to turn my book series/potential game into a little series if i can get the hang of it.
I already know im going to use cinemachine for my camera system and I'll build my own audio management and trigger systems (Hopefully).
And a side note, does anyone know of anyone who would do some 3D character modeling if i was able to provide some character concept art and have a chat with them? -

I hate those websites that paint within one second and then it takes two seconds to load all the other assets. It seems bare minimum to me. Idk about you all but I would rather have it loaded in three seconds instead of me trying to scroll immediately and thinking my computer is going to crash from the low framerate.7

I hate coming to work and not seeing my team. I’m contractor & expected to be there amongst the other SysAdmins. This **** make ya quit. I’m discouraged rn. I have interview for automated warehouse on Thurs. My contract almost up at current & have heard no talk of in-house hire. Not sure if I’m supposed to negotiate again or what but I have had no training and came out of nowhere as they struggle to keep and find talent and I kill it. I have completed projects, organized assets, closed mid-high ticket count weekly, etc. I like showing up. Imma go. Anyone got wisdoms or words for meh? Maybe it’s a surprise!!!🎉 Like a birthday or sumn.3

Next.js is a piece of shit framework, (Like React is next level shit), which enforces things in the name of "convention" and is just a PITA to work with. Have to migrate an existing project to next? Make sure you use css-in-js, or you cant use next. Want to use a shared layout? lol, gtfo. Want statically optimized assets? make sure you call the correct apis in pages or you get no optimization.

All you front end devs who work with dedicated design teams, what's you usual workflow? Do the designers pass on the UI kit with all the assets and dimensions and you clone the thing using whatever stack you're using or do you all decide the specs on the fly looking at the general visual structure of the design?5
-
One for game developers. What do you do with assets to keep track of them ? Do you just store them in guy?
-
A prototype I'm working on has a feature that fetches thousands of db rows. feature is running 'slow' according to everyone except me and my pc. I can speed up one section slightly by splitting a JSON array into two parts to reduce calls for the 3rd party assets because that's probably the cause.
Still doesn't 'work', says the hapless technoweenies. more troubleshooting.
The cause is Mozilla on a single computer chokes on a 3rd party api, in this case Mapbox.
How do I 'make mapbox run faster' on Mozilla? -
