I love Windows 10 (got as free upgrade from MS), and have no issues with MacOS or Linux OS. I use them as well but do all serious work on Windows.

All my life, I have worked on business / commercial side and picked up Web development in last couple of years. I started using computers on DOS in 1992, and shifted to Windows 3.0 in 1995. There was no Mac or MacOS back then.

For serious work, I purchased a old Dell Precision M4700 workstation grade laptop with quad-core i7, at throwaway price, got 32GB RAM, 2.4TB (1x2 TB + 400gb) of SSD on super sale online, and installed it myself. It easily supports dual 4k monitors.

Git-bash on windows allows all the necessary linux command line on windows. Though not tried, Windows 10 allows embedded Ubunutu with linux terminal. Web development tools like - VSCode, git, github / bitbucket clients, NVM/Node, React / Redux / Webpack / Gatsby / Jest, REST clients, GraphQL client and server, Graph Server, Chrome PWA / Chrome Dev Tools, http/Websocket/WebRTC interception, Google Firebase SDKs, AWS sdks, cloud utilities, CI/CD tools work flawlessly. Windows even has its own package manager for applications.

I just finished up an absolute cesspool of a project. I was seriously reconsidering a career change to something less stressful, like welding on a high-rise building, or capturing Somali pirates.

Next project is supposed to be a walk in the park, and probably still will be.

Spent some time last week - easy enough, nothing really new/ground breaking here.

What static site generator do you prefer, and why?

I want to set up a website for a small business and do not want to spend a lot of time on it but it also should be blazing fast.

My familiarity with react leads me to Gatsby, but there are probably good alternatives.

It should also be easy for the (non-tech) admin then to create posts on a news page or even new pages (probably with Markdown).

Anyone here uses Contentful and Gatsby? Can you please share your experience? How hard was it to integrate them? How did they improve you development process? What problems did you encounter?

I feel I need to write some side project summary somewhere.

So here it is about 3 months later:

- deleted 90% of code I created during last 3 months
- rewrote backed 5 times
- 200 lines POC still waiting to put in any meaningful architecture on frontend
- frontend part after aurelia, next, gatsby, react I think it would be vue powered by nuxtjs
- forced myself to buy food for whole week and don’t go out (except go running ) before I finish at least what I wrote on whiteboard

Now some positive news:

- there is not much left to be fucked up, removed or unnecessary added
- I think I got a plan
- this is probably first side project that makes me happy for such long time
- there is some probability it would help people and this is what I want to do in my life

Most important is that I know it would take at least half a year to do basic version of it and I don’t care.

Wish me luck so I can put some sneak peak after next 3 months.

As far as static content creators go: I think Gatabyt JS is pretty fucking cool.

Docs make sense and shit is easy to navigate too.
React gets only as complicated as you want it too (that is across the board tho)
Integration with different data sources. You don't want to use wordpress but your retarded ass users don't get much sense into other things? sure fuck it, fine whatever. Wanna use drupal? here

I am still looking into it but other than the 230mb of node modules for a hello world type of project I really don't see that many issues.

Holy shit. I've been working on a project for the last few months. It's been going fairly well all things considered. We're currently at the tail-end of the project and are set to be dev complete next Friday.

We're on a headless CMS + Gatsby and decided to use a front-end framework (This is important to the story) to "speed development time."

PM comes to me yesterday and inquires about functional/visual QA on IE11. IE-What?! This framework I was told I had to use doesn't support IE11.. like.. at all, and now we need to support IE11, at the ass-end of this project, cause 60% of the traffic on their current site uses IE11? Oh come on!

So its looking like we get to re-write a few components from scratch. Then we get to try and fix the display issues for the other ones... FML, I was looking forward to being done with this so I could take a week off and go recharge before Thanksgiving garbage.

What are the best practices when making a blogging website?

I'm creating an addition to my personal website to include a blog, and want to follow the best practices for it. Do I just save everything in a JSON? Or do I just make every entry a "page" in Gatsby/React? What have you all done? Would love to see some examples.

Today I talked to a recent full stack developer bootcamp graduate who decided to change careers when she was having a hard time finding a job as a UX designer.

I can't help but judge her by her website. It is beautifully made. The CSS transitions are clean, the details are fine and it had an amazing feel. However, when I took a peak at the console I found out it was made with a SquareSpace template.

With UX background and being a recent fullstack bootcamp graduate, why make it with SquareSpace? It just feels really off. With that background you should at least be able to make a static Gatsby React page and host it on Heroku or Github.

Am I overreacting?

Behold! This is the first time in my career when Jest and unit testing in general actually helped me 😂

Spent two days moving from a fucking slow piece of crap called Gatsby to Vite, trying to comprehend the difference between TS aliases, Babel aliases and Linaria aliases. Found an answer inside a totally unrelated issue explaining Jest stuff, good job on documentation, Linaria!

Vite is fast. Crazy fast. Forget about Webpack, Parcel and things alike — Vite doesn't even need to bundle JS.

Gatsby was slow to the point of my computer's audio glitching, I'm not even talking about the OS interface lags.

Vite is fast to the point that I don't actually need a new MacBook.

When I see in a project a custom-written 96 lines long file that implements linking on a website I seriously reconsider all the life choices that led me to this point.

I have a side project which contains very simple data (a URL and a list of strings associated with that URL). I would like a way to automatically generate a webpage for each of those links (I believe the right term is template ?). Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this something like Next.js or Gatsby would be used for? I can provide more info if I’m not clear enough

How to separately host the backend and the frontend ???

I have express API repository which is currently hosted in Heroku along with its documentation site written in ejs.

But now I'm planning on separating the docs website with gatsby and moving it into another repo and hosting it on netlify while the API service still remains in Heroku.

Here is the end goal :
"/" : the docs website.(netlify)
"/api" : the API services.(heroku)

Can someone help me with how to implement this in the actual application?
