That'd be Linux for sure. I love how it allows its operator to do anything they please, without any lockdown or nannying. So what I did was develop an open source library, uploaded it as a public repo, then use that on our client project.

Today I had what might have been my worst job interview to date. It had many different technical, cultural, and business red flags. One that really stuck out to me was when I asked my interviewer why he loves his job, he went on about how great the benefits and events are. Worst Hackathon experience:
Taking an API built by a junior dev team with minimal specs and "hacking for two pointless days" to make it work in production...

The whole Hackathon idea was an experiment to see if they could make the dev team stay late if they bought pizza and said "have fun".

We all spent 2 days cursing at the shoddy tools and lamenting that you can't run a Hackathon with a single directive and "production ready goal" yet remove any choice the developers have to actually contribute.

The main challenge with building a free education platform is to convince people to actually contribute to it. :(

How does one find Open-source projects to contribute to?

Why not release the devrant (mobile+web) client on github (and maybe gitlab for people that would actually contribute but are special about the usage of github) so people could contribute to it, leading to faster progress? I thought about it now for a bit and couldn't see any problems with that, since the current apk can be anyway unpacked via freely available tools (appcelerator doesn't make it too hard either anyway 😕) and the website/api isn't any secret either (see the 4000 clients getting patched together out of zombie like api calls)

My worst team experience finished only a week ago:

- Be me
- be averaging 80% in completed modules and on track for a 1st
- have to take a team project worth double credits
- get stuck in random team with 40%ers
- lose 1 artist at the start (team of 12: 6 artists, 6 programmers)
- 2 artists contribute nothing and disappear for a few weeks
- I'm forced to do level design to have something to show (looked good tbh)
- weeks go by and too many contribute very little.
- by the end the team was basically 4 programmers and 2 artists contributing.

All other teams basically get an easy 2:1/1st just because their team turns up and contributes.

I could lose a 1st because of this module bringing down everything else, it also had a huge effect on what I could achieve for my dissertation due to time.

Basically don't choose a degree where more than 25% of your mark is almost entirely out of your hands.

Have you ever encountered a situation like this before?

You worked in a team, made many adjustments in the codebase, and all the changes you've made are the best practice (after some research or asking the community).

But the team leader decided to go with the "messy" version of the code and the team leader does adjust the principle of "bad code" in favour of your coworker, just because he/she is a friend of the team leader.

So, whatever you adjust or contribute is simply nullified but any adjustments made by your coworker are considered "new updates".

Those times when you feel that being a competent, reliable, hard-working developer just isn't good enough. When you feel you can't keep up with the pace of change in your sector and you're being left behind in terms of knowledge and understanding of all the new tools and frameworks and patterns and approaches. You're convinced you're soon going to lose your ability to contribute or architect anything new in your current role.

Each time I login at GitHub and take
a look at featured repos, also when I realize the huge server destroyer bug it's just a misplaced line.
Sometimes I look at some repos and I'm scared to contribute...never contributed once.

There are days where I just want to develop a plot of land in some forest/mountain rich area into a little farm, maybe with some silly animals like emus and alpacas.

Development is not always as stress free as I'd like it to be.

In the past, the only times I have contributed to projects is when it’s my friend’s or I’m fixing the bugs for that project because the codebase I’m working on uses it. I am selfish right, so why would I go and search for platforms to contribute on when I don’t even know the creators themselves or where it’s used? Any company that ENFORCES you to have a college degree so you can get hired - is a failed company in my eyes and not worth any of my time.

I would not accept to contribute a thing to that company regardless of the salary i would be paid.

How does one choose which open source project to contribute to?

After giving up on multiple attempts to contribute to opensource projects, came to know about 'yourfirstpr' on one of the comments here.

Long story short, a week later and I've made my first pull request to libgit which has been merged :)

What does Linux and web development have in common. New distros and framework popping up everyday.
What is wrong with people, creating distros and web framework for dumb reason. When they can contribute to to existing distro/framework to make it better.

I got some slight love lately...might need to become a Dev and actually contribute more then.

Contributing to large open source projects.

It's something I wanted to do since I fell in love with one programming language (which shall remain nameless here). However, I'm not restricting myself to one project. I have many projects I'd like to contribute to.

I even wrote this down in my 5-year plan for the future.

So here are my goals for 2019 in no particular order:
-contribute to open source
-switching from intellij to vscode
-learn vim
-finish side projects
-live a healthier lifestyle (less meat, quality food)
-more DevOps
-do some hacking challenges
-learn proper linux system administration

My dad was using notepad to edit some HTML for his website. I downloaded Visual Studio Code and he likes it SO MUCH MORE. (I wonder why....).

Kinda happy I could help him with it. He is pretty good at coding but just hasn't done it in a while (not his trade) so he doesn't know all the new tools and such.

Saw my previous dev professor in an event, almost 5+ yrs have passed since I last saw her.
We were tied to a team and when she asked me what skills can I contribute I said Web Dev, I swear her face turned sour with disappointment. What's so wrong ?

Had to get my car looked at because it kept veering to the right, and my team decides to meet to work on our website without me. "You don't have to be there. It's fine." Next day, I learn that they finished a lot of the website and there's not much left to do. No, it's fine. I only wanted to contribute the ******* simple backend stuff and look like I contributed nothing to the website.

Not so much a problem with the way CS is taught, but I think it's a problem that a lot of people put emphasis ONLY on programming (and maybe data structures and algorithms) and ignore things like Computer Architecture or Theory of Computation.

Most of the CS syllabi I've seen are built very well, but many students (and some teachers) seem to ignore a bunch of subjects because they don't contribute to making them "hireable".

When I try to contribute to large open source projects I'm reminded why I don't typically contribute to them.

To have a professional job that lets you work remotely from the comfort of your home in your own office; which pays you well enough but doesn't pressurize you into unachievable deadlines. One that gives you ample time to relax and do some part-time projects for yourself. One that lets you spend time and contribute to the communities you're part of and help you grow both professionally and within the community.

Oh, and best of all, work in the open - open source, open culture and transparency.

Love it when the maintainer of an open source project you contribute to runs a linter over the whole codebase and force pushes the changes to origin master so now all the Pull Requests in the queue have to be rewritten and have tons of merge conflicts to resolve. Awesome! 😠

If I know more UX than our designer does, I will do everything in my power to make them feel as small and minuscule as possible until they can actually contribute something meaningful and not a utter time waster to the team.

I had written a negative review of my company Jio on Quora. Some higher-up executives read it and shared it in their internal WhatsApp group, and one of them even reached out to me.
I deleted it back then to be safe, but now I feel like restoring it.

But now Facebook has purchased shares in my company, and everyone seems to be forgetting the fact that Ambani still owes $41 billion in debts to the government. I feel like restoring my deleted Quora to spread awareness, and contribute to the evolution of the IT proletariat consciousness.

Finding an open source project of my taste to contribute is tough 😟

My Team leader is such a bastard who doesn't do any work and every day he has parcel from some online shop like Amazon or something getting graphics card.raspberry pie etc etc and he literally does nothing. These are a guys who cost company and contribute to downfall of the company. If I would have been a CEO I would have fired such guys. But you know the shortcomings of the big company. And his face like a rotten tomato. No expression and most sadist face. You will ever find

Where do i start , if i am interested to contribute to Open Source projects in C ?

I have a good understanding of C language. Even if i am not able to contribute , it would be nice learn from those projects .

The problem with big projects like the linux kernel is that i dont understand or cant comprehend most of the code , except for few sections like gpios..

I don't think anyone said it yet so I'll have to choose osu!. It's a rhythm game and now it is being remade as open source. It also uses a open source game engine dedicated to rythm games. The osu staff is great and the main dev (peppy) streams on twitch while making the game sometimes.

It's a great project and I hope I can contribute some day.

I learned it when I had my Commodore 64. Recently I've gotten the itch to dive back in the development world. So I'm refreshing my memory on HTML and CSS (yes I know they're not programming languages) then move on to JavaScript and either React or Angular. Hopefully I will be able to contribute more to discussion on here than just lurk.

It also baffles me rust examples are far and few in between on the internet. I remember learning older languages and there was always so many examples, pet blogs, and projects you'd find all over you could learn from. I wonder if times have just changed somehow?

It's​ so hard to find open source contributors, especially for large projects. Lots of people might use what you create, but getting them to contribute code is like pulling teeth sometimes. 😤

So devs with many open source contributions go to interviews with open source uniforms with medals pinned in so HR at the door knows who are they dealing with?

How do you guys get into open-source? It’s hacktoctoberfest and I am trying to contribute to ANY project. I searched a lot, the popular python libraries I use don’t really have many good-first-issue. Most issues are very very specific that the time I try to even understand it, the person who actually implemented will probably resolve the bug. Where to even begin? How will I know which project to contribute to? I have googled but never really got answer. Searched projects but most of them were dead.

How can I find small open source c++ projects to contribute? Yes, i googled this but all I can find was projects with hundred files. Anyone need a lazy helper for his/her os project?

What attracts coders to open source libraries?

If you ever contributed to open source projects, what was the reason?
I am contributing to my supervisor’s package which is really handy for biophysicists (quantum mechanics). It is basically tons of code in python, it has okayish internal design, coverage 39% and B+ codefactor. I wish we could get more attention from scientists in our field and attract people to contribute to our project.

I cant really contribute much to this wk because im mostly doing dev stuff in my free time.

But league and, well, strategy games in general taught me a lot about micromanaging stuff and thinking ahead. My advice is, if you wanna get better at most mental tasks, go download lol or grab a copy of cities or eu4 and play for half an hour every day.

Worse than an incompetent colleague who can't help me fix technical issues is a demanding, confusing, beat around the bush, boss as a project director.

Project Manager is away and Project Director steps in to take over. Starts barking orders and when I try to actively contribute positively to get the project going, he stops at me, barks that I was asking the wrong questions or doing the wrong tasks. This isn't my first project rodeo. I have had plenty of project experience under my belt but he belittles me. I know what needs done and get the project done and over with.

I guess I know what I'll do. Avoid proactively contribute and just hang back until I get orders on what to do. Because fuck progress. Or until I hear more from my original Project Manager.

Imagine you decide to spend a few hours to contribute to an open-source project wiki/documentation that hasn't been updated in years, to actually make it useful for new users, and then the maintainers start expecting further modification and corrections from you before pulling the PR, like you work for them, instead of just fucking pulling it in and then editing what they want themselves. It's just another example of how stupid and nonsense the open-source community can be.

I recently came across codingame and codewars. I haven't had much time to explore yet, but they look like they'd be helpful with learning by doing. I'm not so great in a classroom type setting. I enjoy jumping in and hands on. But I also have a hard time thinking up my own (useful) projects to use or create for practicing and I'm nowhere near good enough to contribute to something that's open. Anyone use these or have similar favorites? I'm not necessarily a beginner in my languages of choice, but I am rather rusty.

- Get to travel after graduation
- Strive for a better position at current company
- Contribute to interesting open-source projects
- Hope to not go insane in the process

To contribute to github projects every day. It would be possible if I didn't have 2h daily commute...

Things I want to accomplish in 2023:

- learn rust
- learn a functional programming language (elixir probably)
- finish the O'Reilly book about microservices
- learn and contribute to gnunet
- read at least other 2 books about SE

Regarding the last point, I've always underestimated SE books.

As an undergraduate junior, programming beyond basic data types is very overwhelming. Web and mobile seem great. So does ML. Open source is amazing to use but scary to contribute to. Seriously, being a programmer or even trying to be can be hard.

Hello all, I know we can search in git lab for the labels(easy, first commit etc) to find open source projects that suit me, but as a rookie it gets a bit frustrating not understanding the project and so on. Does anyone know a better way to contribute to open source and learning at the same time?

Today I started my first machine in a data center after configuring it :) It feels awesome to contribute in an awesome place like this! Lots of projects ahead of us during Long Shutdown 2, including OS transitioning, hardware upgrades, updating config managers to newer version and so on! I've learned a lot in a week and my confidence is slowly but steadily building :)

I can never find open source projects I want to contribute to.
