Boss: Who knows VB?
Me: I once wrote a calculator
Boss: Good enough! You will edit the companies biggest VB Application.
Lesson learned. When your Boss asks if you know a programming language you do not really know, you are like John Snow: Know nothing7 -
Friend: hey I started learning java..
Me: great, good luck.
*After few minutes
Friend: Hey I heard you're good in java programming..
Me: yeah I know stuff.
Friend: So can you teach me all good things in java?
Me: but..
Friend: half hour is supposed to be enough, right?
Me: hell no, it's not like that..
this stupid thinks half hour is enough to transmit all my career to his stoned brain..
I am going to die!12 -
Wrote some code during the break that transform an image to the following styles, is it good enough to post on github?22
-
This is the prototype of my "Build Button". I press the button and it executes a build process. Keyboard shortcuts weren't good enough for me.15
-
No, I wont help you solve your stupid problem. If you are not able to read the wiki or the man pages - Arch linux is not for you.
You have only proven that you are stupid enough to listen to other people who likes to brag how good the are, but actually do not know shit.15 -
I got fired.
Worst job I ever had, they extended my probation period, called me "over maintenance", said my work was good but not good enough for the effort, If I take a lot of care doing my work then it's "over preparation", if not good enough then it's "not detailed enough", I don't ask enough questions? I must be unmotivated, I ask too many? I take up too much of other people's time.
Fuck them all. I hope they get a taste of their own medicine.10 -
Rantish story time!
Today I impressed myself. I was told in all seriousness by a PM "couldn't we do this API in HTML?" and kept a straight face. Even though he doubled down, following with "oh, do you think the language isn't powerful enough?".
Good times!11 -
Devs who argue that their favourite language is the best and other are not good enough for anything. Different tools for different jobs dammit!4
-
GUYS I GOT MY FIRST JOB, I'M SO FUCKING PROUD OF MYSELF (not a dev job, but I'm still in high school so anything's good enough for me)15
-
I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown due to all the pressure at work, and my boss sat me down one day and said "Don't take it so personally, it's only work".
He explained that you simply cannot make all the people happy all the time, you can only do your best, and that is good enough.7 -
Joy of being a programmer: Get good enough in a language/framework, you can make whatever the hell you want :)
There is probably no other field that allows this.15 -
This link shortener service. It's nearly good enough for public testing.
Finding a good domain name, though.... 😅45 -
A while back a co-worker of mine fucked up by leaving some debug code and pushing to production.
He quickly repaired it, redeployed and everything was good again before the customer experienced any issues.
Later that day, management showed up by his desk to ask what happened, how it happened and stating that he was not "angry enough" about his fuck up, long after it has been repaired.
Up to this day i regret not asking in what unit of measurement we could determine if we were angry enough; decibels? gray hairs? grams of shit in my underwear?4 -
Url shortener seems to be working well enough as for the features without interface yet, still doing testing but it's looking good (few minor non-critical bugs but that's it as far as I can see)
Now the frontend/interface.
😅😰😬21 -
Well, basically
• Coworkers that know their shit
• A boss that once coded/still codes
• A management that consists of people that coded/code
• A pay that's good enough for me to afford more than just a place to live, food and water.4 -
That moment that you need something but your skillset isn't good enough to make it and your time is too limited to learn it.
I fucking hate those moments.26 -
Not sure if posted before, but I found this useful tool, good enough to leave simple 'to do' directly on the server
https://github.com/klaussinani/...11 -
My computer science teacher is very sly: while you are working he stands right behind you for some time, so you start writing good code, functions for everything, perfect indentation... But you don't know if he is still behind you, and you're not brave enough to look back, so you write good code for the rest of the lesson.
What a good prof8 -
I'm losing my fucking mind right fucking here.
Setting an anti-csrf token in the index.php file ONCE. Yes, I triple trillion checked, only fucking once.
Print it to the page as test, fair enough, looks good.
Send an ajax request to the server:
AN ENTIRELY FUCKING DIFFERENT TOKEN 😡
Fucking hell.13 -
"please use a secure password*"
* But don't make it too secure, 20 Charakters is enough.
Why would you fucking do this? The only reason I can think about is a scenario like this:
"How do we store the passwords in the database?"
"Just like anything else?"
"So I create a VARCHAR(20)?"
"Yeah why not? It's good enough for a name, and you shouldn't use your or anyone else's name as a password, so it should be perfect"10 -
when I was a kid, I got banned from stackoverflow because my question was not good enough, and from 2 low quality questions they never allowed me to post there ever again.
They're really unforgiving. Which is why I try to help n00bs on stackoverflow get that initial rep12 -
Plans for 2019
- make my app good enough for prod usage
- find someone to help me with ui
- find someone to help me with marketing
- register my own company
- end my twenties
- maybe quit my 9/5 job by the end of the year
it's gonna be a fun year :)2 -
So I pretty much deleted 90% of the project I'm working on and pulled two all nighters to reimplement the features differently because it didn't feel "good enough"... fuck this neverending "I can do better" feeling 😭😭6
-
When you're not funny nor miserable enough to post a good rant but you're still trying your best to get more ++ so you can get free stickers but the requirements keeps ++
I need to up my game :(4 -
A client asked us today to disable TLS 1.0 and 1.1 across their servers.
Its not often that I say this. But this makes me proud. It's a good client. Going with the changin times. I wish all clients were like this one.
RIP TLS 1.0/1.1, took you long enough.2 -
I'm making multiplayer minesweeper using NodeJS and so far so good but I can NEVER FUCKING FOCUS ENOUGH. Like damn, I should be way further along with this shit.9
-
Pubs are fucking brilliant. Walk in. Take a vacant seat. Order food and drinks for a good price. Live music. See all your local friends. Drink enough to barely make it home. Sorted16
-
I’m now running Fedora Workstation as the primary OS on my laptop simply because Linus Torvalds does... I mean if it’s good enough for the creator of Linux, it’s good enough for me. 😅
I really need to stop fucking switching distros...30 -
Whenever I see a programmer or hacker coding in a movie, I pause the movie and see if I can understand what the code is trying to do. If I can't understand it, I feel sad the rest of the day thinking I'm not a good enough programmer.7
-
So I got 10 days of national holidays now starting tomorrow, gonna learn some PowerBI and neural network for college paper material. Problem is my brain just not fuckin good enough to absorb all of this algorithm. Fuck brain12
-
Heck yeah, I finally have a Raspberry Pi Zero. It's so cool and small and cheap and I'm gonna make so many groundbreaking things with it!
*20 minutes later*
O, nice, it comes with Kodi. I suppose that's good enough for now.
*3 months later*
chirp...chirp...3 -
Word of advice: never buy the UMIDICI C Note 2.
Bought it myself and it's an utter piece of garbage.
Just bought another phone which runs stock android 7 and Lineage OS might be installable.
Also it can be rooted, good enough for me!9 -
The meeting where I was thrown under the bus by my colleagues for "not making enough progress" and removed from the project. It's all good though. That project was a piece of shit and now I'm doing something I actually enjoy with a group of people I actually like.
-
Not commenting enough, using if instead of switch, messing (and breaking) the IDE, not reading pop up messages, thinking and not doing, watching Netflix, starting on new projects before finishing old ones, complaining about certain languages, googling instead of figuring it for myself (sometimes), let my friends persuade me into making something for them, run-on sentences, not enough comments, giving up quickly, not doing adequate research, and of course, not writing down good ideas I have.9
-
When the design agency changes the whole fucking UI 1 week before release because they think the usability is not good enough.
FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING PLACENTA EATING LOBOTOMIZED ADOBE FRANKENSTEINS2 -
Everyday, I am amazed at developers like those here on devRant. I look up at you in awe and admiration, always thinking about how awesome your life probably is, even though you rant about it sometimes. I want to be like many of you in the future.
Thank you for improving our lives with whatever you are doing. I feel like this doesn't get said enough.
Meanwhile, University sucks (failed exams), but I am expected to graduate with good grades. Sigh. I also feel like I'm not learning enough of those things that I need to become a good dev and rather overly complicated math which I'll never need in my later life.24 -
First, why didn't I know about this app sooner.
Second, a month into my new job as senior frontend and wonder am I good enough.
Third, I know I just need to get out of my head.
Lastly, glad to be here.7 -
Oy, can any of you chaps hack a facebook account?
Asking for a friend.
Seriously. This waste of oxygen said if I wasnt good enough, I should find someone else to do it.
God I hate humans. I'm converting to hinduism so I can get reincarnated as something else. A cat maybe.19 -
I'm not really keen in relying too much on JavaScript to render a properly functioning web page. HTML and CSS is now than good enough for it nowadays.
But if due to technical limitations, i have to use JavaScript, I make sure to not use jquery.
I don't like jquery.9 -
I sometimes think that my presentations aren't good enough and then I remember the Nintendo presentation from E3 in 2003.2
-
If you don't feel good enough with your programming skills, keep practicing but don't be sad, there are dogs all around the world that love you3
-
"I couldn't fix the test so I commented it out."
"I removed build timeouts because our jobs started taking that long."
Next I'm waiting for "Compiling the code is good enough we don't need tests" before I lose it...1 -
I should just quit. I am not paid enough to deal with this pissing contest.
Reviewer:
Need to add instructions (on readme) for installing pnmp, or if possible, have the top-level npm i install it (lol).
Also, it looks like we are no longer using lerna? If that's right, let's remove the dependency; its dependencies give some security audit messages at install.
Me:
it's good enough for now. Added a new ticket to resolve package manager confusions. (Migrate to pnpm workspaces)
Reviewer:
I will probably be responsible for automating deployment of this (I deployed the webapp on cloudflare pages and there is no work that needs to be done. "automating deployment" literally means replacing npm with pnpm). I disagree that it's good enough for now.
Imagine all readmes on github document how to install yarn/pnpm.
Lesson learned:
If you think an OOP static site developer can't handle modern JS framework, you are probably right.2 -
I do love u ranters

Whenever I feel like I’m not good enough at my trade, I come here to read a few rants. While I am a failure, it’s so nice to know there are even more disappointing devs around.13 -
THIS FUCKING DEBUGGER IS IGNORING MY FUCKING BREAKPOINTS
GO TO HELL YOU PIECE OF SHIT
AND RSPEC: FUCK YOUR LIMITED METHOD HIT-COUNTING BULLSHIT! ONE HIT-COUNT PER METHOD FOR THE ENTIRE SPEC IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!
FJA;KLGAKLGJFKSDHG17 -
Docker and kubernetes might be about the biggest boost in productivity that we have had as developers in the last fucking century and I can't speak well enough for theres technoligies.
FUCK ME this shit is good, this shit is great and this shit is NEEDED.
FUCKING LEARN THIS TECH18 -
My compartmentalizing skill is not good enough. Wasted last night by doing nothing and falling asleep because of a bad mood. I have shit tons of tasks.3
-
For the first time I have enough seniority to say no to a request from another team...and it felt so good.3
-
Still wondering when I'll have a laptop good enough to run Android Studio with ease.
The lag makes me go ughhh6 -
"I met with a potential client today and part of their opening gambit was how they were looking for revolutionary work delivered within a tight timescale, and if the work could be done a reduced rate then they’d be able to send a load more work our way. … They were saying that they wanted work that was fast, good, and cheap. And if the work was fast, good, and cheap enough, the reward would be the offer of more work that is fast, good, and cheap. … Let me be clear about this, these people are evil, and their work is poison. " - Hoss Gifford1

Joined a company as a junior developer and have been working there for almost 4 years.
Too scared to leave because I don't know if I'm good enough to apply for a non junior role :(
Is this the so called "imposter syndrome?"10 -
Since apparently lots of you are into Linux, I would like some advice.
I'm wanting to install a distro to use as my main OS, but there is just too much choice.
I'm coming from Windows 10 so I read that KDE is a good choice for a desktop environment and the Plasma version looks pretty good.
Yesterday I've tried Deepin OS but I'm not a huge fan, looks good but not enough content / customization.
So right now I'm hesitating between Manjaro (with KDE) and Elementary OS.
Would you recommend any of these, and why ?
Btw, this is my first rant 😎18 -
Anyone else annoyed that they can code a really good website (as in PSD to HTML) but just aren't creative enough to come up with a design? I find myself on Dribbble a hell of a lot of the time coding designs that others have done out of boredom, but stunned by how amazing their designs are. I'm just not creative enough.13
-
Good news!
I recently found a job at a call center for a local Japanese food joint, and I will finally get enough money for a paid Apple Developer certificate, and now I will be able to publish the app on TestFlight, have proper notification services, etc! I will update you on the situation.7 -
Working in security for many years only granted me world-class paranoia about taking pictures of myself and my family. It even made it hard to keep in touch with my friends as we don’t live in the same country anymore.
The good side is that it pays well enough to grant me a platinum foil hat.8 -
Have I ever told you guys of the time that I had made my PM feel bad by saying I had to drop 3 classes because he was working me so hard?
Yeah that happened and he felt really bad about it!
GOOD! FUCKING GOOD! I want you to feel bad about it! Don't you dare say that I'm not putting in enough work ever again!1 -
A morbid realization (I am just wasting your time keep scrolling)
Unless someone takes a stand for the user, and their comfort and requirements, unless someone looks a client straight in the eye and says "no, I will not do that, and neither will my team" and denies them their request, nothing will change, good devs will keep losing their spark to save themselves frustration, good people will walk away and the tyranny that we face daily grows... unless someone stands up, someone who cannot be knocked down, or reprimanded and told they're wrong for fighting for what's right.. unless someone stands up for what is right and fair... nothing changes... and nothing ever will... poor programs, bad games and content, lower standards, frustrated users, annoyance that you don't matter as a user or a dev will never go away... unless someone says enough. But no one will, money is the boss, morality a liability, and people an abundant resource. This world is backwards, devs are carrying the blame and no one who is able, cares enough to say "that's enough!".13 -
Note to my future self:
A 2048Bit SSH key is minimum,
4096Bit is good enough
8182Bit is too much
16364Bit... why do I even bother about this size5 -
Few weeks back a MNC rejected me as a fresher. The interviewer was quite rude. "your are not good enough", his words just took the soul out of me 😑. He said my portfolio website was done by somebody else. yeah! fine mate. We will meet soon4
-
So I always start learning JS frameworks and end up getting confused by their syntax among other things. Do you guys know of any good websites to learn vanilla JS? My problem is that I probably don't know enough of vanilla and end up getting flustered.11
-
I had a job interview today and it went well, gonna hear back roughly around a week. Hopefully I did good enough.9
-
When will Microsoft stop ruining good products?
Xamarin was a decent enough platform untill MS got a hold of it. Now, you never know what the next update will break.
Skype is already lost to the MS darkness.8 -
I coded the app so good
I optimized the UX SO GOOD
I made the UI look GOOD
I made the error handling and input validation ROCK HARD SOLID BULLETPROOF
NO FUCKING WAY COULD YOU FUCK THIS UP
NO WAY COULD YOU BE DUMB ENOUGH NOT TO KNOW HOW TO USE IT AND NOT FUCK IT UP
I GAVE IT TO MY DAD AS A NORMAL USER TO TEST THE APP AND HE FUCKED IT UP ON THE FIRST TRY
HE DIDNT UNDERSTAND THE UX.

I thought any fledgling dev could become a good one with enough team guidance, frequent discussion on ideas and reasoning with seniors, experience, and work variety
But one I know is proving they don't have the knack.
I really wanted to believe anyone could be a good dev if they tried hard enough but this one is just...
They've dragging us down.
Not paid enough to make it my problem to raise it with management. I've tried to help them grow but I've never seen such slow growth despite the different learning/teaching styles *we've* done to improve their capabilities (the entire team)
I dread working with them and I'm not alone apparently6 -
This is a good Experience -
I used to go to a class to learn C++(was a kid back then).
One of the sir there told me -
"Anybody can write code, just knowing coding is not enough, idea is more important. You should have good ideas and solutions, you can alaways find people to code for you"
This has stuck with me till this day.1 -
I kept telling my boss my salary wasn't good enough for the job I was doing, and for over a year, he kept telling me HR says I need to prove myself. I got admission to school to do a masters and all of a sudden, HR doubled my salary. FML.2
-
When you stop freelancing because clients don’t spend enough to keep you making enough money to continue freelancing for a living. But then they come back begging you to keep working on their stuff because suddenly they have enough money and a need and because they can’t seem to find anyone who can do it as good as you did. But even with them handing you new cash money all you want to do is not do that stuff anymore. But money.3

Xcode 11 only 7.6GB
Earlier it was 4.7GB
New innovative bugs added or a finally good enough IDEfrom Apple?9 -
Lol I suck. Learnt coding without a degree in it, enough to be functional. Got an internship at a good place. Made code that worked but didn’t know enough on documenting and testing and can’t give enough time anymore on it to make it reproducible.Actually joined a CS program this fall!6
-
Good job person who is not educated enough to not print a screenshot but still somehow got to work at university
-
you either die a good browser or you live long enough to see yourself become the new internet explorer.11
-
Now i told u have to work 44 hours in a week, after 3 mounths they will hire me if i be good enough.
Sounds scary a little🏢7 -
Here you go, i fucking made this excel sheet by hand because the generated logfiles were not good enough for you and now i hope your dick falls off.5
-
Does anyone get the feeling that as they become more senior, they care less about meeting "best practices" and more of just "good enough"?
Best practices being everything in those books about TDD, unit testing, design patterns, design artifacts.
Good enough: enough so it won't blow up in prod, some tests but not 80-90%, some docs. Basically not like those public docs, open source projects/frameworks where function is covered
When I first started professionally, I was all about efficiency, good design, reducing technical debt, clean code.
But now, I look at problems and instinctively I may make these decisions but I don't really think about it much. First goal is to just get something working, clean it up later... Maybe.6 -
I was trying to make this app a good "SOLID" app. Then I realized if I did that I was going to have 57 objects that were just different enough that I couldn't generalize them and this app just isn't important enough for me to do that. So I took a nap.
-
Linux update! After spending the weekend installing and configuring Ubuntu, I decided I instead wanted ElementaryOS. I then proceeded to install that in an hour and 45 minutes. -_-
Anyway, I'm pleased with the result, and hopefully this will be good enough that I make the switch for real by buying a non-apple computer when I have the money--and urgent enough need--for an upgrade.7 -
Even though I bragging about how good my few projects are to the people I talk to them about, I undervalue my worth as a developer.
Even though I am desperate for money, I've only recently started trying to get work in the dev community (with little success) because I actually feel that I'm not a good enough developer..17 -
Russ: "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing"
Marty: "If that long."
Russ: "Yeah, so be careful what you get good at."
-True Detective season 1
Love the writing in season 1. Very raw and to the point.1 -
Can anyone recommend a good English to German translator?
Don't trust Google Translate enough to put it's words to paper, only asking here because I've noticed a lot of German dev's on here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯14 -
There's simply not enough time in a lifetime to master everything one would like to master. And it's even worse in technology, where by the time you're getting close to being good at something, a newer technology is pushing already to replace that one. WTF!?3
-
Lotta Ubuntu hate on devRant today ...
Funnily enough, Wappalyzer tells me devRant runs on Ubuntu.
And anyway, Ubuntu is a good operating system. It's not my first choice, but it works well as a gateway drug to Linux. I have it running on a couple EC2s because its the simplest to provision and set up.
Ubuntu is good, save your hate for Windows and particularly MacOS20 -
Scrum CSM course: it's good to accept that we can't be perfect.
Also CSM course (1): if it's not followed perfectly it's not scrum
Also CSM course (2): scrum won't work in your team unless the whole organization adopts it
CSM course provider after cert: $1k CSM cert isn't enough to practice Scrum responsibly12 -
I really despise solving competitive programming problems.
I truly believe it's okay to struggle with them and that people have different abilities. But these kind of problems are an easy way to make you hate yourself and think of yourself less.
I can't solve this problem --> I'm not a good programmer --> I'm not smart enough --> I'm not good enough like my peers who work at FA*G companies, ...
I know these interview problems are a filter and that recruiting is hard and the demand is always high and that they are nothing like the real work but, the reality is, you need to prepare if you want to get into one of the big companies with better perks and maybe better projects.3 -
Does anyone just feel tired, in general? Like the boss is (usually) alright. I like the work and I am good at it. Maybe I'm not feeling challenged enough? Honestly, I'm not sure. In the last retro, I was an 8.5/10 on the happiness index, now I'm a 4...wtf4
-
I hate my country. I hate how everything around me is done poorly: roads, houses, production, & stuff. I hate how my countrymen are settling with just good enough or how they are okay with mediocrity.
This is a rant. I'm a dev. Hope that counts on devRant LOL9 -
Wanna know how to piss off an entire dev team?
Agree that progressive isn't good enough, must be native.
And supporting ie7 & 8 won't take much extra time or effort...2 -
What the fuck?
Are vegans that special to need a fucking own dating site??!
Are normal dating sites not good enough for them?
Funny part is that he says there have been some other vegan dating sites before. None of them did it. Of course his will! Because his sites will do ads. And ads means thousands of users!12 -
Designers! Argh. I’ve been busy with a form for over two days and STILL it isnt good enough. I told everybody this CMS is a pain the ass and every element has to be positioned manually.
THAT YOUR FUCKING CHECKBOX ISNT LIKE YOUR PSD ISNT MY PROBLEM.
PLEASE THROW YOURSELF OFF A BUILDING?! -
I hold the stance that the best development tools are the ones with enough novice tolerance and no tendency to stay on contributors' way. The worst tools will make you adopt opinions that serve to make more harm than good, be it on the communicative side of things or codebase.
-
Sometimes I think "I should write a meaningful error message for this exception" and then i remember how useless 99% of the error messages of every compiler / interpreter I've ever had to use and decide "msg ='something went wrong'" is good enough.3
-
I'm a junior dev, been on placement a year.
I get tasks done mostly on time, my pull requests are merged, yet I still feel like what I'm writing is seriously under quality.
What point will I stop writing code that isn't good enough to not be stressed about? 😷7 -
Why the fuck everyone in indian game dev industry is obsessed with unity fuckkkkkk !
Don't you know you only need some lite runtime like OGL or SDL for those shitty "hyper casual" games
Also why the fuck is an experience in building hyper casual games is a requirement isn't this side scroller hack and slash knockoff good enough for you to know I'm competent enough
Fuck you dumb shit for brains people who are heating up phones by using unity just for a shoot the hoops game.6 -
Macbook keyboard is shit
Especially european variant.
I want to see any person in the world that is braindead enough to think that making short left shift if favour of having abolutely useless button there is good.
This is the most stupid decision that could be ever made.
Not only the symbols used by that button are seldom used, they also are duplicated on they other keyboard keys. But shift is used all the time and must be big enough instead of that shit.9 -
1. Kill every last bastard who uses spaces instead of tabs or anyone who thinks that's better.
2. Break every text editor that has the option of transforming beautiful code tabs into hideous spaces.
3. Make a statically typed language that's good enough to replace JS and the pile of hacks we have in the web today.12 -
He spent a week learning to code (c#) then decided he was good enough to write the next big FPS.
The result was about as bad as you'd expect. -
Those times when you feel that being a competent, reliable, hard-working developer just isn't good enough. When you feel you can't keep up with the pace of change in your sector and you're being left behind in terms of knowledge and understanding of all the new tools and frameworks and patterns and approaches. You're convinced you're soon going to lose your ability to contribute or architect anything new in your current role.8

The worst infinite loop of all.
while(hasPoopOnTP( )){

I finally did it! I met my goal! After 6 months and a ton of interviews I finally found a new job! Good pay, good culture and actual options for career paths!
I was so sick of working were I wasn't growing or being valued. I can rant enough about what a weight off my mind this is!
Ref: https://devrant.com/rants/4792256/...3 -
I became good enough to be hired as a developer by reinventing lots of wheels and making mistakes. A lot of mistakes.2
-
Over the frozen river and through the woods, to work I go...because working remotely isn’t good enough for the sorry fucks I work for.1
-
I have upvoted good questions, helpful comments and useful answers on SO for a long time now, although I don’t have enough reputation (15 needed to count upvotes).
Once I reach this 15 points get ready for a big rain of upvotes 😁2 -
When I go to luxury restaurants and I get one poot of food alongside two teaspoons of good-enough-wine.1
-
!rant had my yob interview today, i hope i left a positive vibe, they want me to meet de other devs to evaluate my level of skill. Pray for me i'm good enough for their custom php management tool3
-
After 2 weeks of ranting I have honestly ran out of rants.
Either my life as a dev is too good or I'm clearly not coding enough.
The later seems more plausible. -
All software sucks, I overheard a colleague say. I used to be proud of what I wrote, but after 20 years I realize that I am never going to write perfect code. It may be good enough, but if that's all, than my colleague may be right. What a relief :)2
-
Hmm. Seniors have the half working experience as I do and I am the only not senior one in Dev team.
I adapt code only to "taste" good for code reviewers, but they allow themselves to commit without caring and just saying :"oh unit testing is boring"
Enough with the kindergarten. Time to prepare myself for the next job.1 -
I asked Santa to carpet fire every HR from my company, now it's time to log in and see if I've been good enough to have my wish granted.1

First time having Baileys and it does not taste like 17% alcohol. But it tastes good enough to get drunk before learning for exams in the next weeks7

If you want a self stem boost talk to some non programmers sometime. They seems to see us as gods with some mystical magical powers!!
Talked with a broker today and he told me about a damaged computer that he had with some important files. I told him that I'm not that kind of computer guy and proceeded to explain him briefly what I do (I build stuff) and he was like "oh, so you a the the REAL computer guy!" (no offense to any technicians here!)
I loved it!
So, get out and talk to the muggles and stop complaining that you are not good enough to work for Google (or Google is not good enough for you anymore anyways...)5 -
Is it even possible to get good enough at regular expressions where you can just write it and you don't have to search stackoverflow for one that works?9
-
Seriously, does anyone really use TDD? It sound good in theory, but generally the devs are already used to implementation-first and are not willing/disciplined enough to change their mindset.
I think the biggest disadvantage of TDD is not taking into account how freaking lazy developers are in general.
Or maybe I just wasn't willing enough to make the change.
Thoughts?9 -
So I think I'm gonna give vscode another chance. I've heard so many good things about it, maybe I just didnt use it long enough. Let's see how well it works in arch xD2

the internet is only good enough for devRant and I have no games on my phone. After a time there aren't rants to read anymore. 😂1

Title: The problem with "good enough" code
Body:
I'm a software developer, and I've seen my fair share of "good enough" code. You know the kind of code I'm talking about: it works, but it's not pretty, and it's not very maintainable.
The problem with "good enough" code is that it's a slippery slope. Once you start writing "good enough" code, it's easy to fall into the trap of always taking the easy way out.
Before you know it, your code is a mess of hacks and workarounds. It's hard to understand, it's hard to maintain, and it's a nightmare to debug.
I've seen projects go down in flames because of "good enough" code. The code was so bad that it was impossible to fix, and the project had to be scrapped.
I'm not saying that you should never write "good enough" code. Sometimes, you just need to get something working, and you don't have the time or resources to do it perfectly.
But if you're going to write "good enough" code, you need to be aware of the risks. And you need to make sure that you're only writing "good enough" code for a short period of time.
Once you have a working prototype, you need to start refactoring your code and making it better. You need to make it more readable, more maintainable, and more testable.
If you don't, you'll eventually regret it. Your code will become a liability, and it will hold you back.
So next time you're tempted to write "good enough" code, think twice. It might save you some time in the short term, but it will cost you in the long run.7 -
Learning Java Spring, their official documentation is a fucking mess. Can't get any useful information other than got dumped with loads of confusing terms/packages references/libraries.
baeldung blog site is better than the docs to some extend, but still, very fragmented information.
Ok enough ranting.. Any good learning resource recommendation? Forum?5 -
Python abstract classes... Looks like a pain in the ass...
I'm just gonna create a class filled with methods that just pass or throws NotImplementedException
Good enough?2 -
What are your guys thoughts on Stackoverflow? I feel like no matter what I say on there, whether it be a question, comment, answer, it’s never good enough for someone. Everyone there just seems so rude for no reason. Do you guys have the same experiences? Just curious if it’s only me or it is like this for everyone.14

i dream of having a working dev and test environment
or being good enough to have my own stuff working
i don't go out of my way to fuck around with any of it, i just want to do my work, clock in, clock out8 -
Few weeks back, I have subscribed /r/battlestations and drooling everyday. Now with this latest devRant news, it's time to save money or sell my ass on street to
1) buy a wide monitor or monitors
2) buy backlit keyboard and mouse
3) buy a good desk
4) buy a good chair
5) buy/rent a room with enough space
Forget about buying and setting up a good unit, I can just use my potato laptop for one photo taking. *dry-laugh*

Used to be if I was good enough, now it's if work is going to make me a worse person than I was when I started (passionless and not apathetic)1

When you stress to make a good enough rant so you can receive a stress ball, but now you're stressed so you actually need the damn thing.3

When you write LaTeX, do you code? Typeset? Program? Type random stuff so that in the end the PDF looks good enough to publish it?
I really feel like it's coding but it also is typesetting. Hmm, the questions of life!14 -
Me: trying to do any simple fucking project
Me: cant figure out how to do something simple or cant figure out how to start or how something should work.
Me *Looks up problem* (everytime...)
results: SOMETHING I WOULD NEVER HAVE FUCKING THOUGHT OF.
Am I just a shitty programmer, a shitty learner, or just not cut out for this? because I fucking Love this field. this is the only thing I ever want to do. BUT I CANT FIGURE ANYTHING OUT FOR THE LIFE OF ME EVEN WITH LANGUAGES IM GOOD AT!! WHICH IS JUST PYTHON AND IM STILL SHIT AT THAT.
I TRY TO DO PROJECTS WITH JS, OR C, OR PYTHON PICK WHICHEVER ONE. AND I NEVER KNOW HOW I SHOULD START IT, AND IF I LOOK UP HOW TO DO IT ITS SO MUCH LONGER AND COOLER AND BETTER THAN MY DUMBASS WOULD HAVE DONE (and longer in a good way because its well thought out and works)
HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET A REAL JOB IN THE FIELD IF I CANT MAKE THE RANDOM IDEAS THAT I SEE ON THE INTERNET AND WHY CANT I MAKE THEM AS GREAT OR LONG AND SHIT ON MY OWN. SO MANY PEOPLE CAN WRITE SO MANY LINES OF CODE AND FUNCTIONS AND ALL THIS SHIT THAT WORKS AND YEAH THEY LOOK UP SOME PROBLEMS BUT NOT HOW TO FUCKING DO THE ENTIRE THING LIKE SOME FUCKING RETARD

Question for those that worked alone with a project manager, and were you covered multiple parts, frontend, backend, mobile and you basically have good friendship with the project owner/manager but the job got bored or wanted to switch jobs because you wanted to change environment.
What was the period you informed your employer/project manager in advance about your resignation and leaving? 2 weeks, a month? more? And was it enough time for the manager to find replacement? Did you leave in good terms?3 -
I know we all hate FAANG companies here but I got invited to Amazon 5 hour interview(5 session here) after 2 technical i terviews and it feels good. It will also be in the domain I really want to work in.
But enough for good news, I want you to piss in my drink. Give me reasons to stay away from Amazon. Especially in European branch. What are they bad at? Why would people leave Amazon? Company gossips, I want to hear everything!12 -
I want a want Desktop and a decent gfx card for video processing/ml/etc, not for gaming and also a good CPU.
I'm kinda leaning for an i7 but the specs r like 4ghz, my current laptop is 2ghz I think. Old.
I can't decide which to buy and if Ryzen is good enough or which GTX card. I don't think I need to have 1080?
https://bfads.net/stores/newegg/...5 -
Im in a tough place now. Received 1 offer from a company and on Monday afternoon I did the last tech interview with the second company.
Now by Monday I have to respond to the first offer while I dont know about the decision from the second company.
Tried to speed them up a bit with an email on Thursday afternoon by emailing the guy who interviewed me and also CCed both of the recruiters who were involved in the process. Basically told them that I have another offer but Im still interested in them and I would like to hear their decision. No answer yet.
Its sad bcs the guy from company no2 who interviewed me seemed really cool to work with and I think I did good enough to get an offer. But apparently Im not that good enough that 5 working days would be enough to respond to me with a decision given my current situation.
It sucks because now Im gonna spend the weekend wondering what should I do next.7 -
once I have to code in a public train station’s restroom just because I have no place to sit and floor is not comfortable enough because people keep walking by distracting me,
So I cover the lid, pull my laptop out, use my phones hotspot connect to remote server to fix the problem.
The smell is not good.2 -
So I asked a question on Stackoverflow. I got my answer and solved my problem, it improved my reputation to 15 (can upvote and post comments). But I have also got a question ban now as my questions were not good enough 🤷🏻♂️2

We are not interested in your skills right now, but is it ok if we keep your details to maybe contact you in the future?

WHY THE FUCK ARE CODECS STILL A THING?
Have we as a society not moved on and found like the 4/5 "good enough" movie formats. Fucking bullshit needing me to download VLC for the first time in years -.-
AND WHY THE FUCK ARE CODECS ON SALE ON MICROSOFT STORE???? WHAT?9 -
What's the most efficient motor driver for a small DC motor that I want to run off a 5V source for aurdino?
I previously had a L293D and it was inefficient as fuck, it got so hot that almost burnt my finger, (ran it from a 12V supply) and it dropped a good 2 volts from power supply to motor.
Is there a good enough off the shelf driver or do I have to make a H-bridge myself using MOFSETs?6 -
Unpopular opinion: given your server has enough entropy, UUID v4 is a good session token.
It allocates 122 bits for the randomly generated part. OWASP recommends session tokens to contain at least 64 bits of entropy while being at least 16 hexadecimal characters long.18 -
Learning aws for months, not enough the company needs to use azure. Learning azure for several months, not enough the company needs to use gcp. Learning gcp for several months, not enough the company needs to use oracle.
When does all of this bullshit ever fucking stop? No matter how much i learn and what i learn it seems like its never good enough. Or its never enough. Its very discouraging. The more i learn the more it appears as if i know nothing16 -
Quick question. How do i get myself to believe that I am good enough. I am good at what I do people tell me and i really want to move towards part time lecturing but the idea terrifies me... But i really want to help others and currently just being needed when others need me doesnt make me feel i am able to help others enough..
In short, how do you deal with an internal problem with wanting to help but being afraid others wont take ke seriously.4 -
One of my hardest hurdles, is to write something that's just good enough.
And not waste hours making it an inch closer to perfect..
Writing half baked but functional solutions haunts me... -
My entire bachelor's degree studies.
I did two senior projects solo because I couldn't tolerate the absolute mediocrity of my peers to be satisfied with a C+ or B "good enough!"4 -
Is a 2017 MacBook Air good enough for web development and for working in IntelliJ IDEA, Android studio & XCode?
I'll be building a PC with Ryzen 7 and Vega for performance intensive tasks later. I need a laptop with good build quality under $1000.
If you know any good windows laptop in this price range please let me know :)9 -
i cant touch computer for two days, and it make me a strange feel. maybe its a good thing . through travel to relax myself.have a funny day and then start a new coding life😁.this holiday is a long time, after this travel .also have enough time to Learning some good framework.3

Just got comfortable enough with React.js to start answering people’s questions on stack overflow and I have to say it feels good to help people1

In the darkest dankest parts of the code, I have discovered a way to get the tag UNDEFINED to show up in this rant. They call things that are unknown a black box. But you see, if you have a good enough shot gun, you can begin to blow enough holes through the box to figure out what's inside. I never said that whatever was inside the box was going to make it out... I just wanna get a good idea of what was inside.4

As a developer, when learning a new language how do you know when your good enough to start making projects to test knowledge or skill?6

@zlice I am going to ...subtweet you? (Screenshot included)
Basically, so much what you said. 100%.
You stumble your way around different companies until you find something that sits right with you.
There are so many contributing factors to the "good company" and as many definitions as everyone will value different aspects of work. Good management? Tech stack to your liking? Kick ass colleagues? Interesting product? Good work life balance? Company contributing to world's welfare?
I can go on. Each of you will decide what is good, good enough, or decent and what sacrifices and tradeoffs are acceptable.2 -
I need to finally learn CMAKE at some point
I've been using make for many years now and it's good enough for me so I never bother with trying CMAKE but I can't be lazy forever5 -

C# developers!
Anyone knows a good source to start reading about C# 7's syntax (not only "what's new")? Sometimes it feels like the language specific tools that I know are not enough.
P.S. Can't find it in msdn language reference or guide.
Please share.3 -
So, I have an interview for a VB.Net gig. They are willing to pay to get me up to speed (last few jobs were C# and current is C). So I guess the question is: Should the remittance be good enough, would making the switch be worth it?8

Should've posted this on Monday:
Feeling good about myself.
Customer wanted a project prototype done until the 14th of this month. I had it ready and working by the 3rd.
Yippie. I'm apparently competent enough.
I'm gonna ask if I am allowed to put a screenshot with censored names and whatnot on my portfolio.1 -
I just love it when the debugger integration into the IDE breaks for no good reason.
I also love that the github issue about it was closed for inactivity. Because problems magically disappear if no one screams "same issue here" for long enough.
Fuck you too19 -
Senior dev on our team is concerned that we are raising standards above and beyond what we need to deliver the project.
For 6m+ this project has delivered little, but what there is is full of bugs that got through testing, and no standards (coding or otherwise) in place at all.
I hate dealing with people who preach “good enough” is fine but won’t accept they aren’t even close to doing “good enough”7 -
Refactoring a long, nauseating piece of code while the mouse died.
Finished the job, about to push, KDE froze.
Good enough excuse for trying a new distro I guess.4 -
My first time standing up and talking about something for an hour tomorrow. "Knowledge sharing" as if I don't do enough one on one...
Why must you have to do this shit to get promoted? Why can't managers trust that your good at what you do without the public cock sucking?
Back to my introverted rock for a while.5 -
I haven't. Yet.
I started taking programming seriously when I got to 9th grade. 3 years isn't enough time. Probably enough to be able to put out okay-ish code in a scripting language, but not good code.3 -
This morning, I decided I'm gonna do some Android development. I opened Android Studio (closing 2 Firefox windows to reclaim enough RAM), launched the Android Emulator and then proceeded with my coding.
Since, I've almost finished a prototype app, translated a good 100 strings, had lunch, updated 2 server and THE EMULATOR IS STILL BOOTING!
My Android dev friend tells me this "just happens sometimes". WHAT?!?
I'm genuinely starting to think that good software doesn't exist anymore... -
I think the difference between a monkey and a good developer is that good devs ask why? And try to find out.
Whereas a monkey just does what he's told and learns just enough to do what they need to do, usually by being told directly rather then figuring it out themselves through trial and error. -
I don't care what anyone says I'm still holding on to the idea of a depressed peoples chatting/dating platform primarily focused on connecting people that don't think they are good enough and trying to make them reevaluate5

It seems that most of us feel under appreciated for our hard work. Would it kill managers to say "thank you", or say "great work" once in a while? Until then, I'll continue wondering if my work is good enough.4

Its FRIDAY and soon to have weekend!! Lets get such a healing weekend by having some stretches even you can go jogging or gym. Have a healthy food, watching movie, go dating (if you have one) and get sleeping time enough. You have to live in your good life !!25

Communicated 50% more time than I actually estimate for a new feature because the management usually thinks it can be done faster than estimated.
Actually got that 150% approved so I have enough time to write some bad ass beautiful code with unit tests and documentation 😳
Seems like good things actually happen..1 -
Most developers are morons, pt 2
In my last post on this topic, I discussed zombie developers, i.e. lower tier developers who enter the industry from a non-tech background usually through a bootcamp or get hired at a small (and usually desperate) company after doing a few github projects.
In this post I'll be talking about the middle 67% of developers. The average joes. The ones who know enough software to build apps, maybe even publish it and sometimes (not always) actually get users using their products, even for a brief moment of time.
For these people, software is genuinely interesting to them, but they don't really put in enough effort to get good at it. They don't put in enough late nights. They don't cancel enough leisure or social events. For most, they're only good enough to not get fired (job security) and that's as far as they want to take their careers.
And I suppose there's nothing wrong with that. Most people don't have a yearning to go above and beyond, so I'd expect most developers to follow this pattern as well.
So to you, I say thank you. Thank you for doing all the boring menial work no one cares to do. You might even get a pat on the back if you put in the extra effort.18 -
Good morning devRant.
Here's a good question. What is the worst tool you've tried that was recommended to you? Could be a text editor, IDE, STACK setup, etc.
For me that tool was Eclipse with JavaEE. Not Spring/Hibernate or Maven, but specifically JavaEE in Eclipse. I probably lost over 2 1/2hours configuring that beast to work and it would still break every half hour or so. Drove me crazy enough to switch to IntelliJ. It's one of the rare cases where a free application just wasn't as good as a paid for application. :/10 -
(How far) Do you see a future where one of Linux's distros gets a good enough user experience that average people start using it?
My partner has been using Ubuntu in one of her side-computers and they haven't complained. That said, my partner is pretty technologically literate, although they don't code professionally.35 -

I can remember a while ago, I went to a meetup, and listened to some guys speaking about angular 2.
And I thought good for them! One day I might get proficient enough to speak about something before this many people, while actually knowing the topic well enough for it.
Today, I held a presentation before 70+ guys about Vue & Quasar framework at the exact same place. Wasn't flawless ofc, but they said I pretty much nailed it.
I'll treasure it as a great accomplishment for years to come. Love my job! 🙂 -

I want to share a small model in my iOS app. Now on android I'd do with with ViewModelProviders, but on iOS I'm going with SharedDataContainer which is basically a singleton class that store key value data.
Is there any better approach? Data will not be bigger than 10 list items with guid (key) and int (value)
However; when I have big data I do cache on disk or hello OOM exceptions (or whatever they call that bitch on iOS) -

Type A: This has good built quality, is pretty upgradable, has reasonable specs and enough ports and doesn't break my bank. This is the right choice.
Type B: I might have to live on canned food for a while but this is the machine for professionals and I'm in the path of being a professional. Also, it just looks so good. It just feels right to buy this.3 -

It was making me anxious that I was the only one doing a PhD among my close friends. I actually was feeling like I'm not good enough for it, because those around me didn't feel like they're good enough for it. (ridiculous, I know. But it is what it is)
And then, one of my bestfriends went for her PhD. Her situation is complicated, so she actually didn't have much of a choice. But now I am motivated and feel like I might actually be able to do it. 🙂 Mainly because now I can at least ask someone close when I have stupid questions. 😁
It is starting to feel like less of an strange idea, and more like proper work. 😁1 -

JS isnt the problem I have. I have realized. My problem is my lack of knowledge of the language which is not really a problem because I am new but its more the side I dont know how to write code that will do it. and lets say I do I get so fucking confident and it doesnt work and I think its some small error I made but no its just how I write it and it wont work and that gets me so down because when I ask for help my code 100% of the time gets rewritten. can I just not do simple shit on my own? and the problems Ive been coming across are just small projects to get better like "Create a function that outputs the most common item in an array" or "Write a simple JavaScript program to join all elements of the following array into a string" or literally any of the projects on this site: https://w3resource.com/javascript-e...
I feel so embarrassed because these are simple and I cant even do majority of them in langauges I'm better and more experienced with (python) I can think out a problem I cant convert that to code. algorithms in general I cant do as well and Ive never done any "big" or "serious" projects so I dont know what I have to show for the last 3 years of my life.10 -
Self learned. I was introduced to programming quite early courtesy my dad who pushed me to use Linux. At first I learned basics, enough to tinker with stuff. Then I met python. It changed my world. Now I know C, C++, JS, PHP, Obj-C fluent enough and am working on others. But python will always have a sweet spot in my heart. Also, I think python 3 is a good improvement over 2. Not perfect. But good enough and it still has a future.
Working on SQL and Java -
Just learnt python for data science online. Suddenly, have this awesome idea for an app. Thanks to kivy, I could work with python. But wait, X websites find it good enough, Y websites not. And cross platform frameworks seem to be all Js. Basically, pursuing new idea means starting from literal scratch.

I never had a fight. And I mean never at all, not just dev-related.
I'm not sure that this is a good thing.
Sometimes I wonder, does this mean that I'm a good diplomat, or that I'm not relevant enough to argue with?1 -
Interviewing other devs (for job placement) totally sucks. I never realized what a shitty process hiring people can be.
More than half of the applicants are totally unqualified (good fucking job TekSystems), and those who are seem to be only *just* qualified enough, or have really bizarre portfolios and personalities. I'm glad I'm not in HR.1 -
So jelly of all you people out there with a good enough internet connection to setup your own server environment at home. Sitting here with max 10mbit/s down and 2mbit/s up7
-
For me it's just this one thing.
Knowing what i do can actually make a difference , that it can change things.
On such a huge scale. No other job can take down huge systems and cost millions or even billions if done wrong.
And hoping one day ... I'll be good enough to make this world better. -
Are antiviruses worth it ? My subscription expired a few days ago and they're pestering me to renew it. Will Windows Defender be good enough ? Do I really need an anti-virus ?13
-
Sometimes it's hard to go well in job interview because not always the HR person knows about programming enough to let you show off a little bit with some interesting questions and then you end the interview at if you didn't leave a good impression.7

@dfox please unlock all these shitty pixels for everyone so these spamming newbie cunts stop memes and shitty spams to get enough ++ for those shitty pixels.

Can someone suggest me a good, cheap phone with good battery?
I think at least 4000mAh and around 200€
My Touchscreen broke and I don't have enough money for a good flagship...5 -
Kinda dev related... Is a 250 GB SSD good enough for dual booting windows and Linux, while putting documents and crap on an HDD?1

Having a senior DBA can save hours if not days of struggle and save your back, if you do not know well enough how to do a more complicated query yet, without fucking up something.
Good guidance and experience is worth so much.
... and no I do not have the rights to drop databases.1 -
Is Chromebook good enough for web development? Are there good ide available?
My priority is a good portable laptop.11 -
Difficult things that would never make me any money. Hell they were okay with me being a ballet dancer, but nothing with it/technology was ever good enough.

Once again spent a day MacGyvering together all the missing pieces of the app for tomorrows presentation deadline. This time the code base is 95% good code and 5% of dirty hacks which are essential for the rest to function properly.
One day I'll enough time to finish a development cycle on time. One day... -
i want to relocate to a peaceful country nd earn some good bucks before coming back to the nightmarish hellhole that is India. i wish my parents were strong enough for a big bold step like this.
i might have enough funds to book a 1 way ticket to poland, Netherlands or some other peaceful place, but didn't got any relatives or knowledge of their local languages or stuff to live properly there.
aagh the meek, gullible life.4 -
GitHub is down. Unlucky client, guess I have a *really* good excuse not to push that scope-creeped heap of a new frontend. Because apparently 'those "small changes" you've made to the Sketch file are in fact entirely new uses of the data structures' wasn't good enough.

Simple binary questionnaire;

My headset died today. Do you think "it's shipping" is a good enough reason to skip Mondays teams meeting or do I need to go find my cheapo spare headset from my attic3

I love what I do, I love designing and building well-crafted software, and so it eats up a lot of my time.
I constantly remind myself that, while being a software developer is a good profession, it is not enough for me. I am focused on building products that offer real value, in return for money. Because, capitalism...
I remind myself that money doesn’t raise itself, technically-excellent networks full of possible partners and employees don’t build themselves either.
Therefore, I force myself to go be social from time to time.
But it is a struggle, that I don’t do a good enough job with! So I’m going to do better this summer -
There's so much money in technology right now and so much easy success ... and so much poor quality code that is good enough ... that people can not only "function" in rolls they aren't qualified for ... but can excel and even be promoted through the ranks without ever becoming actually functional.

Before my area of focus was the frontend and then my boss thought my skills were good enough to handle servers, now I'm here and working on the staging and production containers... Mother docker awesome...6

I still don't get what the impostor syndorme is precisely, so either I'm good enough to not get it or I constantly sell myself as an impostor.
Edit I think I fucked up english grammar...3 -

Man, I love having a software factory. Every day something different. Today I'm developing with Laravel, and it's an honest framework. It doesn't do anything too much or anything less. Just enough.
It's good to use things that know their place.1 -

Do you have any good idea for a 2 weeks programming project for school, in a group of 5.
It should be large enough to get a 1 (or A in other countries) but small enough to do it alone, since I'm at risk of having to do it alone and drag 4 dead weights behind me.
Language doesn't matter.6 -
How good of a StackOverflow reputation is enough to show off on a resume? How about NPM downloads?7
-
Up to now, whenever I buy a phone, I get a screen 5D protector to protect against drops and scratches.

2. Quit my job and get one that pays better.
3. Learn NestJS/MongoDB stack good enough to finally add a new skill on my resume, hopefully resulting in a new job. -
