How does NLP contribute to AI development beyond text understanding?

Not an expert, but with the latest methods of vectoring tokens, AI researchers were able to associate descriptions to real life meaning, which enables generating video, images, and audio from text prompts, and the reverse operation as well.

This has proven pretty frigging useful, so thanks NLP people!

As @lungdart said, the concepts it extracts are useful for other areas, but those steps are no longer NLP itself.

NLP research is still useful for inference purposes, namely, because in the end, the holy grail of IA is achieving a GIA (meaning, be able to abstractly reason, like our brain), and language is our method of communicating said reasonings.

Therefore, having machines "understand" the way our brains communicate, is a stepping stone to develop abstract reasoning.

That’s kinda like asking if there are any other uses for a screwdriver besides tightening/loosening screws…
