I feel guilty when I spend time after work writing code, because there's that voice in the back of my head saying I should switch to leisure activities. "You've worked enough, don't sit all day, it's unhealthy".
Then I go for a walk or start planning something to cook. And there's still this weird feeling of guilt for not being productive enough, telling me I should learn a new programming language. "Work on your skills, you need to learn stuff to stay relevant in your field"
BRAIN, BE FUCKING CONTENT WITH WHAT I'M DOING FOR ONCE!
And stop fucking bullshitting me.
You're not trying to make me take a walk, you're not having my best interests at heart by making me learn or work.
I'm fucking on to you, you treacherous shitlitter of neurons. You're betraying me, and it happens every single fucking time I let my guard down.
I alt-tab out of my IDE, and within seconds you're there, impeding my intellect, making me click bookmarks to check the feculent streams spraying from the fingers of "friends" on Facebook.
I take a poop, and you just let me slide into a slowwitted state where I pick up my phone and stare at some crapfilled mire of memes.
You're the retarded digital-era id, wearing the disguise of a renaissance smart-ass ego, and you're dumping the fucking guilt on ME?
FUCK YOU AND YOUR MEMES, I'M GONNA BAKE A STEAK WITH MUSHROOM SAUCE AND WATCH PROGRAMMING VIDEOS WHILE DANCING.
NAKED.

Eu was sorting out the rules for Carbon Tax.
It decided that private jets, private yachts, and "leisure flights" will be exempt.
Because of course. Normal people are not, and never were, the clients of this system.16 -
Last Wednesday and Thursday were public holidays. Took leave on Friday and now at a resort beside a dam/lake. Now chilling with booze and snacks in a wooden tent. Life can't be better.
Morale of the story is Programming is not your life. Take a break.8 -
Turns out I had some conversion issues and timing issues in the SD card file parser that I wrote... wtf it worked before I swear
It fully works now!!! I can now finally load presets from an SD card and apply them to the screen at my leisure.5 -
@cozyplanes birthday is coming.....
And my dad is asking if I want some presents....
But I can't think of one.
I already have decent headphones and earphones, speaker, keyboard, mouse, laptop, monitor, phone, and tablet...
I personally don't need anything now, but I want to get something.
Can anyone recommend hardware stuff for me? (not software) Mostly tech related, but if you can think of music stuff or leisure stuff (like boosted board, even tho I don't have the time to ride it), that's great too!
Will waiting for you guys/gals suggestions.
P.S. Ofc I want to get my own A320 or A350, but I am pretty sure my dad can't afford it. If any of you guys/gals have the money, please contact me.14 -
I complete a game, with hectic schedule, in 6 weeks. Now my boss expects all following games to be developed within 6 weeks each. When I asked for 10 weeks, his response was like - you're not putting all your efforts.
I don't want to sacrifice my leisure.
What would you guys do?8 -
Therapy is hardest when you're starting it IMO. I don't like talking about my vulnerabilities with people face to face very much, I get pretty defensive about it. We've agree that I'm suffering from a high level of anxiety which is likely leading to depression and we'll be working on solutions in the coming weeks.
Over the weekend I stopped programming and dedicated myself to more leisure. Went out for a hike (literally) and got a PS4, my first new gaming machine in over two years. Been playing Horizon Zero Dawn.
I'm starting to feel a little bit better. :)1 -
not a rant. I like poetry. Am a poemfag.
Be very impressed. VERY IMPRESSED!
Okay, well, just cringe through it at least. Smile and nod. I hope formatting doesn't butcher this.
"A King"
a king came to me one day
and claimed you will be my son!
and fame, and fortune, and all things good
yours your cup to overflow, overrun!
happiness and princesses, acclaim to your name
a life of leisure and of ease
land rich in treasures buried,
and swarthy ships on deep seas!
All these things, of emperors and kings
Will be yours to command! Though I warn
you my fair son, it is not as it seems
a charmed life is not grand
for though the riches of this earth
at your call, at your hand,
should find you at my passing, in your wealth
it is a kings fate to be damned
wealth to grave you can not take
and princesses demanding wives are one to make
and ships in harbor soon they rot
and health in age gives way to ache
and land is lost which once hard fought
truly that is rare the happiness which can be bought!
so upon the kingly head, heavy rests the (golden) crown
and though surrounded by apparent friends
never must he let his guard down
and ease which spoiled by fear of loss
magnified by all he'd gained
weary king, my boy, tis his lot,
to die a thousand times,
but never grow old again,
so heed these words my boy
it is not the wealth, or fame, or ease
that makes a man great my son,
but his words and his deeds!2 -
I probably dont balance it well. I spend majority of my day either reading code, reading about code, or writing it. I would say my balance comes on the weekends. I hang out with my girl more and I not in front of the computer as much. But even on the weekends I sneak in a few hours of code. My leisure time is literally sitting at a starbucks with my favorite text editor listening to a playlist and coding. That's like total zen for me.

Most developers are morons, pt 2
In my last post on this topic, I discussed zombie developers, i.e. lower tier developers who enter the industry from a non-tech background usually through a bootcamp or get hired at a small (and usually desperate) company after doing a few github projects.
In this post I'll be talking about the middle 67% of developers. The average joes. The ones who know enough software to build apps, maybe even publish it and sometimes (not always) actually get users using their products, even for a brief moment of time.
For these people, software is genuinely interesting to them, but they don't really put in enough effort to get good at it. They don't put in enough late nights. They don't cancel enough leisure or social events. For most, they're only good enough to not get fired (job security) and that's as far as they want to take their careers.
And I suppose there's nothing wrong with that. Most people don't have a yearning to go above and beyond, so I'd expect most developers to follow this pattern as well.
So to you, I say thank you. Thank you for doing all the boring menial work no one cares to do. You might even get a pat on the back if you put in the extra effort.19 -
Okay so I’ve been brought in on a 12 month contract as an external replacement integration architect, alongside a large IT consulting firm. Turns out, they don’t need an integration architect. So I fill my time coming up with useful tools around the project that deal with all the missing parts in their MVP: like monitoring tools, data mocking tools, you get the idea. Essentially doodling.
Client has woken up to fact that they’ve overspent by X million, employing 30+‘developers’, 20+ ‘testers’, n+ ‘managers’ on a ‘low-code’ project … result: project shuts 4 months early.
Q: Essentially client wants remaining four months work done in two weeks. Is there a German word for laughing, crying, and banging the forehead on the desk at the same time?
Supplementary: how cross will client be when they realise project can indeed be done, and that consultancy have been emperor’s-new-clothing them for most of the last two years?
(Feel free to perform substitution on quoted terms at your leisure)2 -
I WANT TO BE A TIME MILLIONAIRE AGAIN.
I want to go back to my old self where I always had enough time to do what I loved. When I used to live HAPPY.
I used to live that brilliant life and infact pandemic fucked it up. lol

Anyone here from San Antonio Tx? I am in town for 2 days. It would be nice if we can meet up(if I get the time that is)
Little family vacation, lil leisure time.3 -
Last night I came back from work completely drained, as usual, and thought to myself - "I'll just lie down for a second..." Next thing my alarm wakes me up 12 hours later - "What the... Again?!?"
It was just my biannual collapse from exhaustion. Now I'm good to go for at least six more months. Yay...
This is what happens when you have been working only on "critical" and "we have to do this or the company sinks" projects (are there any other kinds anyway?) for the past 10 years with NO rest between jobs and NO leisure vacations taken...
Funnily enough, this event coincides with my futile biannual introspective analysis on things I did wrong in my life.
Now back to saving the company...2 -

I used to dream of systems which were built into the infrastructure for a variety of reasons
One was I didn’t feel object detection was likely good enough to handle various objects say to stock shelves in warehouse like stores
The other was power
If the stretch works one might wonder how many of them they’d have to employ to schedule them to recharge themselves throughout the day
It’s a shame humans as is can’t be trusted with too much free time given how the boomer generation and before willfully poisoned the minds of so many of their offspring creating this mess
We might have reached a point where life was mostly personal Enrichment and study and exercise and leisure where we all lived over a 100 years had minimal offspring reduced our destructive footprint on the world and well you get the idea
With more people working in closed shops we might have even reached this tech sooner
I wonder how prohibitive the price tag is how fast it runs out of power how destructive it is to non durable goods and the what other faults that have kept us from advancing into the golden age the last time I posted this before way way back now
Or maybe rich perverts don’t want to give up their monopoly of control over other peoples lives once were forced to change our lives economic system to adapt
Issue of course is population size
The replacement to honest labor and ingenuity or making a better world in the USA has been a short cut we commonly call slavery and that creates incentive for them most of evil people to breed continually and sell their children
Population in a time period of extreme leisure under normal circumstance would likely fall off
Humans would want to enjoy endless travel which is another problem if we keep cars that are based off fossil fuel
Much like increased tech has the trade off of increased usage of energy that is dirty like our nuclear plant problem in the USA where many places aren’t even carting their waste to Nevada down the 10 mile tunnel they’re supposed to be
So we’re stuck
Oh well
Hopefully there is reincarnation
Maybe I’ll come back as a cat
People just had to pull their insane shit when I was alive
Why couldn’t it have Ben something Normal like war or occupation or just hardship of some form instead of designed hardship to control good people and pattern bastards into this weird shit I see all around me because they’re both evil and afraid of losing what they have
Doesn’t this seem familiar ?
It should
Just like the competitors to Boston dynamics I’m looking up have been spawned as a result of YouTube presenting me with the same video as part of its algorithm heh
And also be because I mentioned that before6 -
If I ever work with people who use Python professionally I will go postal in under a day they are some of the most unprofessional snarky little fucking bastards on the internet !
Apparently a question with a million hits who's cure all answer DOESN'T WORK, is me being stupid.
So question, how many of you when looking at a third party client that doesn't have great documentation, export class data into a file to look it over at your leisure by using a serializer that just dumps the shit into said file so you can look at it ?
I mean fire and forget. Just works. Just descends into the data structure and starts dumping field values. Done. One line of code.
Json.PUTMYSHITINASTRING(FUCKINGCLASS) ???????
DON'T SAY MY METHOD OF WORKING IS BAD ! ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE FUCKING EXPORT CODE AS A CHECK_CIRCULAR BOOLEAN PARAMETER INDICATING IT SHOULD WORK BETTER THAN IT FUCKING DOES AND THE FUCKING DEBUGGER CAN REFLECT THE OBJECT !!!!4 -

What movies/reality around me tells about free time:
- the "grand parents" generation (people who are in there 70-80s now) used to go out hang in tea shops, bars, parks, churches , wander in fields, chop woods in their leisure time in their 40s
The "parents" generation (people who are in their 30-40s now) were more into sports and would go for basketball , soccer , cricket for leisure time and later transitioned to playing board games/video games /xbox-PlayStation stuff/comics In their leisure time
The "our generation"(people who are between 18-30 now) are/would be more into playing mobile games and watching anime/web series/movies/weird porn and scrolling social media feed as leisure time in our 40s
( I have taken 40s as a criteria because i am guessing that as a standard age where you are "settled" and have things figured out)
Is this how the pattern is going? And isn't it sad that we are Going from doing stuff that's fun and making you street smart to doing stuff that's useless , time wasting and a little depressing ?5 -
!rant It's the holidays, however, I still have fun doing work during my vacation. Especially at my leisure.

What is your favorite coding/development related blog/news/digest/man/other resource you visit at your leisure?3

The latest news report makes my stomach turn. South Africa moves this month from a level 4 to a level 3 lockdown. No more curfew.. still no traveling or renting accommodation for leisure though. Ban on public gatherings, gyms, dine-in restaurants, tobacco sales remains in effect. Sale of alcohol is limited in capacity and sale can only occur between certain hours of the day.. its such bullshit, of course there's going to be an upsurgence of Corona as they lower the lockdown level, which will make them panic and possibly raise the lockdown level again.. or just keep us at a level 3 until they think we've successfully "defeated the curve".... for those of you who don't know, our presidented declared a national state of disaster ar the onset of the covid-19 scare! 🙈 vok my lewe

There are two kinds of art and leisure: Apollonian and Dionysian. Apollo was the god of light, knowledge and other such things. Dionysus was the god of wine and ritual madness. In a nutshell, the beauty of the stars in the sky is Apollonian, and the beauty of nice juicy ass is Dionysian.
My info landscape was too damn Dionysian lately. I don’t even use TikTok or Instagram. I mean music I listened to, like aggressive dumb rap, bad slang, swearing… Wherever you look, there are Cardi B’s and Kim K’s, with their ugly eyelashes, ugly makeup, ugly inflated lips, ugly voice, ugly things they say. Watching the dumbest shit ever on YouTube. The louder you scream, the funnier the joke. Also, the number one content is some people tearing down some other people: penguinz0 destroying someone again, debunk channels, drama…
Dionysian things can be attractive and comfortable, because they speak to our animal part. In a way, Dionysian is natural. But not everything that is natural is good.
I gave my info landscape an Apollonian cleansing. Unsubscribed from a lot of debunking channels. Changed the way I speak, adjusted my vocabulary. Deleted a lot of music from my library. Went from 6ix9ine to Pink Floyd, Sting and Dire Straits.
It all started two weeks ago. I feel… different, but not necessarily better. Time will tell.3 -
Visiting Drepung Monastery
Highlights:
The largest monastery in Tibetan Buddhism has a cascading structure and a spectacular scale.
There are many monks in the monastery, and the scale of the ritual is large, which is very interesting for mainland tourists.
The annual Buddha worship ceremony at the Shenton Festival is the largest exhibition of Buddhas in the Tibetan area, attracting the entire Lhasa empty city.
Built in 1416, the temple has nearly 10,000 monks, and the temple is gradually rising in profile, the temples are connected, the towers stand, and the scale is grand; the temple provides silver for the Dalai Lama II, III, and IV Quality Spirit Tower. Compared with the magnificent and rigorous Potala Palace, I prefer the slackness and ease of Drepung Monastery. It is more like a hermit, with wisdom but unruly manner. Drepung Monastery is a must-visit place, its share of tranquility, share of leisure, and calmness cannot be matched by any other place. In my heart, it is not a monastery. It feels more like a quiet village. Everyone in the village lives in peace, smiles, and has good intentions. You can take bus No. 16, 17, 24 and 25 to Drepungsi Station, then walk uphill along Dangba Road for about 2 kilometers, which takes about half an hour.
Location: Lhasa, Tibet1 -
I have hoed around in different technologies during my university life, Web dev, game dev, cybersecurity (even got a CEH certificate, the training wasn't adequate tho and it's an expensive field needing all those certs), tried blockchain, machine learning but at the end, I haven't gotten anything done. No big projects.... well, apart from a miniproject that extracts text from videos, doesn't work half the time (T-T), No internships...no experience, nothing. I was really, reaaally dumb xD
Now, in my 4th and final year of university , I have decided to settle on Web development (MERN) with game dev on the side (leisure activities), but I need advice.
Before deciding my path, I enrolled in the year-long ALX Software Engineering course. I'm in my 6th month. It promises access to The Room, where they say job opportunities that aren't shared publicly exist. Problem with the course, tho, is they rush, and I don't get time to consolidate what I learn in the course. I feel like i am not gaining anything (first few months were cool). I am on the verge of giving up cos I found solace in FullStackOpen. It teaches MERN, is self-paced, and ergo gives me time to build my portfolio and has a nice community. I know what to do (quit and focus on my portfolio and projects cos my CV is crap ), but advice from you all could really help. Thanks in advance seniors, this little brother appreciates it.
