Seriously I don't understand why companies are using Zoom. I still don't get the interest compared to Slack, Google Meet, or Teams

Is anyone actually using zoom, though?

    Teams is terrible.
    Google meet is terrible, too.
    I haven’t used slack’s video calls, so I can’t comment.

Zoom has nice fake backgrounds, which was perfect for “Surprise! Everyone is working from home now!” and zoom also had good marketing at the right time.

@Root I agree. They're all terrible. But at least you don't pay 2 services instead of one (most of the companies having Google Workplace, Teams or Slack)

I get it. Though at work most of us don’t have paid zoom accounts.

The managers do because of the 40 minute time limit, but everyone else just joins their calls so whatever.

I have to admit, though, I really do like the fake backgrounds and the automatic appearance touchup features. Totally saves me when I roll out of bed and stagger over to my lappy for standup.

I got you :") Unfortunately, I have long hair with curls so I cannot rely on fake backgrounds :')

@Root teams has fake backgrounds too

I haven't used Slack calls but Zoom has a better UI compared to Teams and Google Meet

Used Google meet in various teams and companies for about a decade, just seemed the go-to, then when 'rona hit everyone was on Zoom out of nowhere. Guess it was just well-marketed.

@Root what a surprise, you say that something from ms is terrible... Guess who got fake backgrounds before zoom?

@asgs i guess zoom for only videocall yes... But for big teams/company/projects do everything in teams like file sharing, meetings, calendar, calls ecc... Is a pleasure. Compared to slack + zoom + gsuite for example

Honestly, Zoom is the most polished product. And for company purposes, subscription cost doesn't really matter.

@WildOrangutan ok than use it instead of teams, slack or discord... Good luck 🙂

@WildOrangutan a polished turd is still a turd

@dontbeevil I said “nice fake backgrounds.” Zoom’s actually work well.

Maybe MS’s work decently now, too, but they didn’t.

    @dontbeevil I wouldn't call sharepoint a pleasure unless you're into SM
  • 1
@electrineer basically you don't have to use sharepoint, teams and office online / onedrive is enough

@Root Tbh no care about camera features, I code in underwear and there's no "corporate clothes" filters so my cam is off

@dontbeevil the file sharing thing in teams 𝘪𝘴 sharepoint.

I've used Teams, Google Meet, and Zoom... And zoom is just shit. The ux is awful, and I genuinely don't get how anyone would choose it. Teams and meet are much of a muchness but I do prefer teams as a general collaboration tool, especially when it's integrated to your calendar properly
  • 1
@electrineer it works seamlessly for us, we don't care if under the hood is sharepoint 🙂

@dontbeevil yeah, it works if it works

zoom is mostly marketed to managers.

@jAsE-cAsE you are the weirdest dude

I was surprised in general how a new product could break into the video call market so quickly. Hearing people speak about zoom sometimes made it sound like it was the first time people realised you could make video calls.
But I guess the home market is quite fast to adopt new stuff even if you could do it via tons of existing platforms.

I agree it's more surprising it's used in business which is usually slower to adopt stuff that isn't part of the tool suite they already use.

I guess it's quite easy to switch to a new product if people are unsatisfied with their previous one and hear about this new thing people seem happy with.

And with video conference software I guess it was easy to adopt because a few teams could try it out first for their team meetings - before making a company wide switch.
